MANTA RAY SNORKELING TOUR AVAILABILITY

You can use this calendar below to see the availability of tours. It’s important to book this tour in advance during high season as it can be a very popular activity on Nusa Penida and they try and limit the number of boats in the water.

BOOK A MANTA RAY SNORKELING TOUR FROM NUSA PENIDA

You can book a tour locally if you are already on Nusa Penida or Nusa Lembongan. To book a tour from Nusa Penida just head down to Crystal Bay and find a vendor as that is where you will launch off from. To book a tour on Lembongan, head down into the main street and you will find many tour offices who all sell the tour at the same price more or less.

However, it can often be less challenging and more convenient to book online with pick-up included if you aren’t cruising on your own motorbike. Therefore, I suggest this tour: Snorkeling with Manta Rays from Nusa Penida or Snorkeling with Manta Rays from Nusa Lembongan . These tours cost less than the tour I mentioned earlier that departs from Bali as you don’t need the speed boat and transfers on mainland Bali.

MY EXPERIENCE SNORKELING WITH MANTA RAYS AT MANTA POINT

I have experienced both the tour from Nusa Penida and the tour from Nusa Lembongan and both were very relaxing and great experiences. Our boat drove us the 20 minutes to Manta Point as we took in the beautiful coastline of Nusa Penida. Once we arrived at Manta Point, the captain looked for any Manta Rays and they are very good at spotting them before you even have your snorkel ready.

When we jumped into the water we were immediately staring face to face with a giant Manta Ray, which is one of the most majestic creatures of the ocean. I didn’t expect it at all, I thought we would be waiting around for the More than five Manta Rays playfully looped around the bay, entertaining the group of snorkelers. The Manta Rays always seem playful and loop back again and again unlike turtles or fish, which often swim away at the sight of humans. The Manta Rays will often actually head straight for you and then dart off to the side at the last minute.

The Giant Manta Ray isn’t dangerous but it is still intimidating when a 5-meter creature swims straight at you before ducking away at the last moment.

We hung out in the bay until we could hardly swim anymore. The experience was unreal. I think this was even better than swimming with Whale Sharks in the Philippines .

Things to know about Manta Point

Manta Point in Nusa Penida, Indonesia, is a well-known dive spot famous for the manta rays that often frequent its waters. It is located on the southern side of Nusa Penida, an island off the coast of Bali.

The site is characterized by its relatively shallow waters, with the depth varying between 7 to 20 meters. This makes it suitable for both beginner and experienced divers. The water clarity can change depending on the time of year and the weather conditions, but it’s usually quite good.

The main draw of Manta Point is, of course, the manta rays. These beautiful and majestic creatures often visit the area to feed on the plankton that accumulates near the surface. Divers can see them gliding gracefully in the water, and it’s a sight that leaves many in awe. The size of the mantas can reach up to 7 meters from wingtip to wingtip.

Other marine life can also be seen in Manta Point, including various species of fish, turtles, and occasionally reef sharks. However, it’s worth noting that the currents can be quite strong, so it’s always advisable to dive with an experienced guide.

In addition to diving, snorkeling is also popular at Manta Point, as the mantas often swim close to the surface. This makes it an accessible location for those who are not divers but still wish to see these magnificent animals.

Best time of year to visit Manta Point on Nusa Penida

Manta Point in Nusa Penida, Indonesia, is a year-round dive site. You can visit at any time of the year and still have a chance to see the manta rays.

However, there are some considerations depending on the time of the year. The water temperature in Nusa Penida can vary, being cooler from July to October, around 22-26 degrees Celsius (72-79 degrees Fahrenheit), and warmer from November to June, around 27-30 degrees Celsius (81-86 degrees Fahrenheit).

The visibility can be a bit lower during the rainy season, which typically lasts from December to March. Although manta rays can still be seen during this period, rough seas might make the boat ride to the dive site more challenging, and the water conditions can also be less predictable.

The dry season, from April to November, often offers better conditions with calmer seas and better visibility. The highest chance to encounter manta rays is typically from April to May and from September to November, but these graceful creatures are known to frequent Manta Point throughout the year.

MANTA POINT VIEWPOINT

As you finish up at Angel’s Billabong it is common to walk around the corner to Broken Beach . The walk only takes 5 minutes but halfway through the journey is an archway made of trees. When you reach this archway don’t go through immediately! Head up the hill towards the coast on your right and look down into the ocean. This is where the Giant Manta Rays hang out.

We sat on the cliffs watching the Mantas cruise around and surface time and time again. It was a pretty awesome discovery and we have aptly named the cliff, ‘ Manta Point Viewpoint’ .

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT GIANT MANTA RAYS

  • Scientific Name: The scientific name of the giant manta ray is Mobula birostris. It was previously classified as Manta birostris.
  • Size: Giant manta rays are the largest species of rays, with a wingspan that can reach up to 9 meters (30 feet). Despite their size, they are graceful swimmers.
  • Weight: These creatures can weigh up to 3,000 kilograms (approximately 6,600 pounds).
  • Diet: Manta rays are filter feeders. They eat large quantities of zooplankton in the form of shrimp, krill, and planktonic crabs.
  • Habitat: Manta rays inhabit the tropical, subtropical, and temperate oceans around the world. They are typically found near the surface or mid-water, but can dive to depths of at least 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) when necessary.
  • Social Behaviour: Giant manta rays are known for their curiosity and will often interact with divers. They are generally solitary creatures but can be found in groups, particularly in areas with abundant food or at cleaning stations where small fish remove parasites from their bodies.
  • Reproduction: Manta rays have a low reproduction rate, with females giving birth to only one pup every two to three years after a gestation period of around a year. This slow reproduction rate makes them particularly vulnerable to threats like overfishing.
  • Longevity: The lifespan of a giant manta ray is believed to be about 20 to 25 years, but this could be an underestimate as many aspects of their lives remain a mystery.
  • Threats and Conservation: Major threats to giant manta rays include overfishing, pollution, habitat loss, and entanglement in fishing gear. They are currently listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
  • Intelligence: Manta rays are believed to be among the most intelligent of all fish. They have the largest brain-to-body ratio of any fish, and they have been observed exhibiting complex behaviors such as coordinated and cooperative feeding, recognition of self in mirrors, and even social interactions.

How to get to the Nusa Islands

There are three main options to get to Nusa Penida depending on your budget and how many logistics you want to manage. Here are the three options with the cheapest first:

  • Book your ticket:   Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Lembongan – Book a regular ferry that leaves from Sanur to Nusa Penida on the reliable website 12go . You then need to moped or taxi across to Nusa Penida via another ferry/boat.
  • Book a fast boat: Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida – This option is great as you go direct from Bali to Penida without having to stop in Lembongan. This option is only slightly more expensive than stopping in Lembongan. This is my favorite option of the three and can be booked on Klook .
  • Book a fast boat with hotel pick-up: Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida – This option includes a fast boat from Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida but also includes pick-up from your hotel in Bali in a van. This option from GetYourGuide is a bit more expensive but takes all the hassle out of the transit from Bali to Nusa Penida.

Snorkelling with manta rays is one of the most exciting things you can do in Bali. The rays are usually found in the waters off Nusa Penida, which is a 20-minute boat ride from Bali's main island, Lombok. The best time to visit is between November and April, when the manta rays are more active and come close to shore.

The good news is that there is no specific manta season in Bali. They are present all year round, thanks to the fact that the waters around Bali and the Nusa Islands enjoy the benefits of the Indonesian Throughflow. It is technically a massive volume of water (stream) that runs around the Indonesian archipelago from Timor to Bali.

feeding manta ray

This flow transfers the water from the Pacific to the Indian Ocean. It is the largest movement of water anywhere on the planet, meaning that the strait between Bali and Lombok enjoys fresh, nutrient-rich currents in all seasons.

Understanding this phenomenon explains why Bali snorkeling spots feature such vibrant marine life. And also, this is the reason why manta rays can be spotted all year round here!

Manta Ray Nusa Penida

Although it is possible to encounter these graceful creatures year-round, you should avoid coming in the wet season, between December and March, due to rough seas. The best time for manta snorkeling in Bali is the dry season between May and October, when you have the highest chance of bright sunshine and calm water. Locals say manta rays are the most active in the mornings, so most tours are scheduled accordingly.

Where Can You See Manta Rays In Nusa Penida?

The island’s southern coast is the best place to see manta rays in Nusa Penida. There are three specific points where they are regularly seen: Manta Bay, Manta Point, and Manta Viewpoint. The first one is a snorkeling spot, the second is a diving site, while the third one, as its name shows, is a viewpoint where you can observe them from the cliffs.

Sometimes, they swim into Crystal Bay and Gamat Bay, too, which are two of the most popular snorkeling beaches in Nusa Penida . You can encounter them at these places, but it is rare.

Manta Bay is a relatively shallow bay on the west side of Nusa Penida. Here, manta rays swim near the surface and feed on the plankton that currents bring into the area. This is the place where most manta snorkeling trips will take you.

Mantas in Manta Bay - Bali

Tour organizers suggest visiting Manta Bay in the morning to see the most mantas. Therefore, it can get super crowded in the early hours of the day.

We think you should not skip the idea of going out for an afternoon trip as we saw many mantas later in the day too; you might be lucky to experience swimming with manta without the crowds!

Manta Point is one of the most southern dive spots on the island, surrounded by high cliffs. The water is approx. 15 meters (50 ft) deep here with tricky currents and often rough seas; therefore, this place is more suitable for scuba diving than snorkeling. This is a manta cleaning station where these majestic creatures come to rest above the shallower reef section while getting cleaned by smaller fish.

You don’t necessarily need to get wet to encounter these giant creatures; you can see them from land, too! Keep your eyes open while hiking or visiting viewpoints because you can often spot them when they swim near the surface.

Manta place from manta view point

The official Manta Viewpoint is on the left side of Broken Beach, the cliffs over Manta Bay. Generally, you have a chance to see them from all the viewpoints of the southern coastline. For example, we saw mantas from the cliffs at Kelingking Beach too!

Nusa Penida Manta Snorkeling Tours – Options And Prices

Whether you stay in mainland Bali, on Nusa Lembongan (the most popular Nusa Island), or Nusa Penida, several organizers offer manta ray snorkel tours locally and online.

The price depends on where you will start the tour: the most expensive ones are of course the manta tours from Bali mainland, while the cheapest option is to sign up for one locally when you are in Penida. Below, we collected the most important information on each version with approximate prices. However, note that prices are just approximated, except for the online tour prices.

Manta snorkeling trips from Bali are usually full-day tours and stop not only in Manta Bay but also at some other Nuda Penida snorkeling sites . This is the most expensive and tiring option since you need to spend the whole on the boat.

Whole-day manta snorkeling Nusa Penida trips from Bali are available from 1.000.000 IDR (70 USD) with hotel pick-up, drop-off from most South Bali areas, soft drinks and lunch included.

Save time and pre-book it online, this trip has very good reviews:

If your schedule is tight, but you don’t want to miss swimming with manta rays, a day trip from Bali could be a good choice, but if your vacation itinerary is flexible, consider spending a few days on the island! There are so many things to do and attractions on the island so I’m sure you won’t regret it if you come for a longer time!

Manta Alfredi over the reef in Bali

If you stay on the island, you can easily book a manta snorkeling trip locally. You can ask your hotel staff to sign you up for one or go to Crystal Bay or Toya Pakeh Harbor and find a seller. These are the two main places where trips depart from and arrive.

boats in Toyapakeh harbour Nusa Penida

A 2 hours-long snorkel trip with two stops costs around 150.000-200.000 IDR (10-13 USD), while expect to pay between 300.000-400.000 IDR (20-25 USD) for a half-day trip with four-five stops included. Don’t be shy and try to haggle, you may get better a deal.

Should you prefer to book it online, we recommend this tour:

Tip: Organized tours usually provide gear, but we recommend having your own snorkel equipment .

Should you stay on the nearby Lembongan Island, you can choose a half-day trip that includes manta snorkeling in Manta Bay plus one or two additional stops. This can be Crystal Bay or Gamat Bay in Nusa Penida, the Mangrove Point in Nusa Lembongan, or the Buddha Temple next to Nusa Ceningan, depending on the sea conditions and your tour provider.

Snorkelers swimming near a boat in Bali

Generally, locals use their traditional boats for such tours and take a maximum of 6-10 people. Trips usually start around 8 am and cost approximately 250.000-300.000 IDR (15-20 USD).

Swimming With Manta Rays In Bali Nusa Penida – How To Prepare

Knowing that manta rays can grow up to 23 ft (7 m) and weigh about 6600 lbs (3000 kg) makes it easy to understand why many people think they are dangerous. But don’t worry; despite their massive size, manta rays are completely harmless to humans.

Bali manta rays are Reef Manta species ( Manta alfredi ) that are the second-largest ray species after Oceanic Manta with an average size of 9.8-11.5 ft (3-3.5 m). They are filter feeders, which means they feed on plankton, crustaceans, and smaller fish, and have small, non-sharp teeth only that they use to chew their food.

Manta alfredi aerial photo

Mantas don’t have poisonous tail stingers, so swimming with manta rays is completely safe. They have the largest brains of all bony fish and enjoy interacting with humans, so it is not a surprise that snorkelers and divers often describe their manta snorkeling as their best experience.

Even if manta rays are not dangerous, you should not chase or touch them. First, you can damage their special mucus layer by touching them; this coating protects them from bacteria and viruses. Second, chasing them scares them away. Try to stay relaxed without splashing with your fins too much, so they might swim close to you.

I feel it important to draw attention to the dangers of the currents around the Nusa Islands. The ocean has great power and we need to take precautions when hitting the water (read our snorkeling safety tips if you haven’t had it yet).

These extreme currents mean you must be extra careful if you go swimming, diving or snorkeling here, especially if you are a beginner. The currents are probably the strongest I’ve ever experienced while snorkeling and can change rapidly.

Rough sea Nusa Islands Bali

After our tour, we agreed that our manta snorkeling Nusa Penida trip was like swimming in a washing machine because of the rough sea and strong currents. Therefore, while swimming with the mantas, don’t forget to watch out for the waves, keep a safe distance from the boats around, and stay away from the cliffs!

Never swim far from the shore, and always use good snorkel fins to help you return to the beach! If you are caught by a current and can’t swim against it, wave to nearby boats and ask for help. I rarely suggest signing up for organized trips over snorkeling from shore, but this is the safest you can do in Nusa Penida!

I wanted to dedicate a single section to the plastic problem. You have probably also seen videos of a manta ray swimming through massive plastic in Nusa Penida. I also watched it and felt so sorry for these magical creatures because I know how polluted the ocean is.

Plastic is a real problem in Indonesia, and so it is in the Nusa Islands. Many people complain about the rubbish after snorkeling in Manta Bay. We were lucky because there was no (very little) plastic on the days we went there, but we know it was pure luck and the plastic problem exists.

 plastic in the sea

You find crystal clear water one day and a huge amount of debris the next; the explanation for these fast-changing conditions is the Indonesian Throughflow phenomenon . As mentioned, there are powerful currents around the island transferring water through the whole Indo-Pacific area, so nobody can predict what and when they will wash up onshore.

In most parts of Indonesia, there is no waste management. People don’t know what to do with plastic waste or how to recycle it. Usually, they collect and burn it (which is one of the worst things they can do since burning plastic releases toxins in the air), or it ends up in the sea after rain.

Hopefully, governments will soon realize the demand for urgent changes and develop a waste management strategy. But stopping the pollution is everyone’s responsibility. Do your best and minimize the impact on nature! Don’t litter and reduce the amount of plastic you use !

Swimming with manta rays in Nusa Penida has become popular in recent years. The number of boats and tourists visiting the bay is rapidly increasing, so you might end up being surrounded by tens of boats and hundreds of people while in the bay.

Unfortunately, there is no limit on the number of boats and visitors at the moment, so you need to be very careful when in the water. Try staying with your group and keep your distance from the boats.

Manta ray swims through a group of snorkelers

Manta rays are present in the area year-round, but you will never be guaranteed to see them. They are wild animals that migrate freely wherever they feel like following the plankton.

Boat captions always do their best to find them for you; they keep contact with other boats and inform each other about signings, so you may stop at a different spot than you originally wanted. Even if you don’t find them, don’t be sad; come back another day!

As I mentioned in the introduction, the manta snorkeling Nusa Penida trip was the one we waited for the most in Bali. We came to the island with the decision that we wouldn’t leave until we managed to swim with manta rays, but we were not 100% happy after the experience.

Don’t get me wrong, of course, we felt extremely lucky to be able to swim with these peaceful creatures! But seeing that there is no restriction on the number of boats and snorkelers in Manta Bay makes us worried.

There is no designated area where boats should stop, leaving space for the mantas, meaning they always chase them. Moreover, the leaking oil from the boat engines makes the water that mantas filter even more polluted.

Snorkeler with manta rays

It was also sad to see how disrespectful some people are and keep touching the mantas. I know there is little we can do to change this situation except warn people who do so, but we hope that authorities will realize that they have to act to protect manta rays and preserve their feeding grounds.

This, of course, does not mean that it was a bad experience; we made unforgettable memories while swimming among these unique creatures, but the experience could have been improved if both visitors and locals practiced responsible snorkeling techniques .

When looking for a manta snorkeling trip, try to find an eco-tour operator that takes care of the environment! Educate your environment about respecting marine life and creatures. Take only pictures and leave a small footprint!

Thank u for this article and for dedicating a section to the environmental factors and swimming etiquette as these thoughts were a major concern when debating whether to travel to nusa penida. It’s always important to educate where possible.

I will keep a look out for Discover Nusa Penida or any other eco tour group to arrange my manta ray experience if we decide to go.

Hi Chelsea, Thanks for your comment, we’re happy if the information helped you. Nusa Penida is becoming extremely popular but hopefully won’t be ruined by mass tourism. It is definitely the visitor’s and tour organizers’ responsibility how they take care of the environment, so we hope that the people started to understand that the choices (where to stay, what to buy, what to eat, what tour to choose) do matter. If you have time, I recommend spending a few days on the island so you can fully explore it and enjoy the places when the the day-trippers leave. Have a nice holiday, BR, Anett

Thank you for this article. You mentioned that you found a 2 hours long snorkel trip with 2 stops that costs around 150.000-200.000 IDR. Can you tell me what company it was with? Thanks for your answer in advance.

Hi David, Sorry I don’t remember the company name, but it was in Crystal Bay so I’m sure you’ll find them, there is a small desk on the left. Have a nice holiday, BR, Anett

Thanks for a very informative post.

Do you think snorkelling in Nusa Penida is safe for a 9 year old kid? The kid does not know swimming yet

Hi Suresh, Thanks for your kind comment. Personally I don’t think that Nusa Penida is a good place to snorkel for a kid who does not know how to swim yet because the currents can be really strong and tricky around the island (especially in Manta Bay, but also Crystal Bay and Gamat Bay can have strong currents). I would recommend going to Amed instead where the water is calmer (depending on the tide, the sea is often completely flat) but still, there is a lot of things to see, even turtles (you can find it in my ‘Amed snorkel spots’ post where to snorkel). Hope this helps, BR, Anett

MY EXPERIENCE AT NUSA PENIDA MANTA POINT

Our Manta snorkeling Nusa Penida tour began at 7:30 am when we met with our boat and tour guide at Toyapakeh Bay.

Our guide provided everyone with snorkeling gear and fins before jumping on board the boat.

We cruised on the boat for around 30 minutes across crystal-clear waters until we arrived at the Manta Bay Nusa Penida snorkeling spot.

Within seconds of arriving, our snorkeling guide started yelling out “manta, manta, manta.” We spotted a manta ray cruising along the surface of the water and we were quick to jump in with mask, snorkel, and fins!

These majestic creatures are absolutely incredible! They glide effortlessly through the ocean and are really friendly to swim with.

The manta rays at Nusa Penida Manta Point can be quite intimidating to begin with due to their body size of up to 5 meters, though you will soon realize they are harmless, humble giants.

I counted roughly 8 to 10 different mantas during our Nusa Penida manta snorkeling experience, which is more than usual. I think it is safe to say we got very lucky!

CRYSTAL BAY BEACH

Our tour guide was really flexible with our group and was happy to do whatever we requested on the Manta Point snorkeling Nusa Penida tour.

So we snorkeled for at least 2 hours before making our way around to Crystal Bay on the boat. The reef here is super colorful and many species of fish can be seen.

Palm trees in the bay line the beach on a golden stretch of sand, so we asked our guide if we could go explore and he was more than happy to drop us at the beach.

We spotted a large group of locals who were gathered under some temporary tarps hung between the trees. We wandered over to see what was going on and discovered a traditional cockfighting tournament.

Big money was getting thrown around the arena, betting for one rooster to win the battle. It wasn’t my scene by any means and I couldn’t stand watching it for long.

Small warungs line the beach at Crystal Bay if you want to grab a fresh coconut to sip on under the shade of the palms.

Crystal Bay Beach is also an epic location to get those ‘tropical island vibe’ shots.

SWIM WITH MANTA RAYS IN BALI

This post may contain affiliate links.

Bali Manta Ray tour

The day we went swimming with manta rays off Bali Indonesia, was one of my favourite days of our six years of full-time travel. The famous Manta Bay is actually off Nusa Penida and we were staying in Ubud Bali. Were we even close enough to take this epic snorkelling trip? We were, and in this post we’ll tell you how you can swim with manta rays from anywhere in Bali, and what the experience was like.

Manta Point manta ray swim from Bali

It turned out that we were. We booked a tour from Bali to Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan in one day.

snorkeling with manta rays off bali

How to Swim With Manta Rays in Bali

You can book a tour that will pick you up from your hotel in Bali (even from Ubud), take you to the ferry for Nusa Lembongan, and transport you to the snorkelling/swimming/scuba diving centre for your manta ray swim.

Snorkelling from Bali

You should also get a tour of Nusa Lembongan, before returning to your hotel in the evening.

It is a fantastic day out, probably our #1 thing to do in Bali, you can book it here.

Ferries to Nusa Lembongan from Sanur Bali

Our tour included a private car pickup from our hotel in Ubud, a return ferry from Sanur to Nusa Penida, an island tour and a full day of snorkelling off Nusa Lembongan.

The included lunch was delicious and the price was very affordable. Take a look at our pictures, read our review, but to make your life easier, book this trip using the button below.

BOOK A MANTA SWIM HERE

Read about our day snorkeling with the manta rays in Indonesia below, or get a price on a similar tour that will take you swimming with manta rays from Bali here .

This post was written by my son.

Swimming With Manta Rays off Bali

Is it safe to swim with manta rays from bali.

Manta rays are fairly safe to swim with as they lack the stingers found in their cousins, the stingrays.

They are filter feeders so cannot really bite you either.

However, they are huge creatures and could potentially harm you, particularly if they are jumping out of the water.

We felt very safe swimming and snorkelling with mantas, even with children.

However, the water was very deep and deep water and strong currents plus wave action can cause harm to weak swimmers.

You could never say with 100% certainty that it is safe to swim with the manta rays at Manta Bay, from Bali.

Manta Bay Snorkel Video

I made this video it shows some of our day swimming with the mantas, give it a look.

What are Manta Rays?

The word manta comes from the Spanish word for mantle.

There are 2 types of manta ray, the giant manta ray and the reef manta ray. They are known as mobulid rays along with the devil ray.

It is thought that there is another type of manta called the Atlantic manta ray but that may just be another name for the giant manta. The giant manta ray is the larger of the two.

These big fish can have a wingspan of about 22 feet and the largest ones can weigh 3000 pounds or 1360 Kilograms and eats people – I mean plankton. They have a skeleton made of cartilage, as all sharks and rays do, and they give birth to live young.

Do Manta Rays Sting?

No, unlike their close relatives, stingrays, who sadly saw off Steve Irwin not far from where we live in Port Douglas Australia, manta rays do not sting, nor do they have a stinger of any sort.

They are harmless gentle giants and swimming with them is considered pretty safe.

Are Manta Rays Endangered?

Manta rays are vulnerable and their population is decreasing due to a multitude of reasons including the fact they reproduce infrequently ( every 2 to 5 years )

Other reasons include over-fishing for, unbelievably, Chinese medicine.

The manta rays are being fished because of the trade in gill plates  (opens in new tab-warning graphic content) which are used in soup.

Ironically, consumption of manta ray gill plates has risen due in part to a decrease in the availability of shark fins.

The mantas can also be caught as bycatch and ghost fishing (when old lines and nets get them caught).

Poorly managed manta ray tourism can also be detrimental to the manta populations.

swimming with manta rays off nusa penida

Micro-plastics are incredibly small pieces of plastic that are the result of plastic break-down in our oceans. These are causing harm to manta populations as well as contributing to the toxicity of the gill plates when ingested by Chinese people.

Where in the World Can You Swim with Manta Rays?

My mum and dad have scuba dived all over the world and have never seen manta rays before now.

Manta rays can be found all over the world but they prefer temperate waters. you can find manta rays to dive and snorkel with in places such as Australia  where they can be found around Lady Elliot Island and around the Great Barrier Reef. You can also get them on the western coast and down in NSW around  Coffs Harbour.

Manta rays can be found all through Indonesia including Komodo island and Nusa Penida, where we went, which is not far from the coast of Bali.

You can have manta ray encounters in Mexico, Hawaii, even Thailand, there are plenty of places for swimming with manta rays.

Where in the World Can You Find Manta Rays in Captivity?

Manta rays in captivity can be found in places such as S.E.A Aquarium in Singapore , Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta (this aquarium was also the first place outside Asia to keep whale sharks), Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, Japan (home of the first manta born in captivity which unfortunately died five days later after the father chased her into walls and a whale shark) and Ushaka Sea World in Durban,South Africa.

This ray was rescued from a shark net and kept in the aquarium for a year before being moved to the Georgia Aquarium, Atlanta.

We have only seen a manta ray in an aquarium once in Singapore. Seeing them in the wild was a much better experience.

Manta Bay and Manta Point Nusa Penida

Manta bay is on Penida island, a small island off the coast of Bali. Manta Point is further round the coast. Weather conditions on the day will determine where your dive crew take you to see the mantas.

My Experience Swimming With the Mantas in Bali

Bali Manta Ray tour

We started the day in Ubud, where a private car came to pick us up at the hotel, not too early, around 8am.  Our driver took us down to Sanur where we got in a boat and started off towards Lembongan PNPM public ferry harbor.

When we landed on Nusa Lembongan our whole group got into 2 over-grown tuk tuks and started off towards the dive center. Once we’d had had some snacks and refreshments (look at me all fancy worded) we got our flippers and masks and headed onto the boats (which were parked on the mangrove forest out the back of the building) .

We headed off towards the first snorkeling site of the trip.

After a while of sitting in the boat we arrived at Manta Point, the water was very choppy and as expected there were a lot of other boats and divers/snorkelers.

Spotters on the boats tried to visually locate the mantas in very deep water without great visibility. When they found them we all had to jump in.

It was on our second jump in that we saw them (they had already gone the first time we took the plunge) our guide called us all over to where he was in the water and then we saw them, great birds of the murky depths.

The second time I got in I had a panic attack, the water was very deep and  not calm, but the moment I saw them I immediately calmed down. They were so big and peaceful, they were like great fishy Hagrids of the sea.

This is nothing like snorkelling on The Great Barrier Reef . I’ve done that a lot, this was a lot more terrifying.

But alas all good things must come to an end. We spent a good amount of time in the water with them but eventually they swam away.

Can You Swim With Manta Rays in Bali?

Yes, you can swim with manta rays from Bali. Tours are available from all over Bali to take you to swim, snorkel, or scuba dive at Manta Point, off neighbouring Nusa Penida island.

We were able to see and swim with dozens of mantas and arranged transport to Nusa Penida, from our hotel in Ubud Bali.

Transfers are also available from Kuta, Legian, and most holiday spots in Bali.

When we got back into our boat we drove around to another 2 good snorkelling spots and had some fun there.

Sadly we didn’t see any more mantas but we did see some other cool fish and some cowrie shells the size of my fist.

After all the swimming was done we headed back for a great lunch that included vegetarian options for mum.

She loves tempeh and tofu satay. I had chicken and fish because I am a barbarian.

Once we were all full, the guides took us sightseeing and we saw some cool places on the Nusa Lembongan Island, including the Devils Tear and then finally they took us back to the harbour and we were sent back to Bali where our driver picked us up and drove us home.

Is This Tour Suitable For Kids and Teens

Bali Manta Ray Tour With Kids Teens

Yes, it is. So long as your child has no fear of deep water and is a decent swimmer, he or she can do this. You’ll have to keep a close eye on them though.

I loved that day when we went snorkeling with the mantas. I was awestruck by the grace and elegance that they emitted and I will always cherish the memory of swimming with them. I loved everything about that day. The guides were lovely, the water was clear and gorgeous and I only had one panic attack (not kidding, it was very deep)

If you’d like to book a trip similar to ours from Bali in Lembongan or Penida, you could try this link .

It deeply saddens me to learn that these beautiful creatures are being hunted just like the sharks, all for some hocus pocus remedy that is literally poisonous to eat. When will people wake up? But at least the plastic pollution wasn’t nearly as bad as we’d feared.

We are looking to try and snorkel with the Mantas in Bali. This was a great article…thanks for all the info. What was the name of the company that you went with?

We booked it online Gale The links are in the post. Nusa Penida divers, something like that, can’t remember, so that it included the pick up and ferry from Ubud.

I never knew we could see Mantas in Bali! Can’t wait to go visit them this July. I have one concern though….I have two little girls who are aged 4 and 6. They have the full face snorkel gear and have used it in Thailand. My fear is able the wavy, rough water. Do you think they are too young to go on this trip? Thanks for your advice.

Hi Eryn, Thanks for reading. Unfortunately I think they would possibly be a little too young. Especially the 4 year old. I’m not sure if they have age limits but from memory (and I could be wrong) most of the tours I think were 10 years and older. Best bet is to ask when you’re in Bali. Hope this helps. cheers Chef

This was fascinating and fact-packed and I know my seven year old will love it too. A great read. Being a tofu/tempeh fan I appreciated the barbarian comment – it made me lol. D you really captured the day in words.

He can certainly write, and he’s starting to get quite keen and knowledgeable about the business. I’m very proud of him, and more importantly he’s proud of himself. He’s also stopped eating eggs, but when offered meat..he’ll crumble.

Well good on him. His enthusiasm shows on the page.

Thanks for the compliment *Insert smug face here*.

A great read and genuinely learnt a few things about manta rays just then… thanks D! Didn’t know they didn’t have a stinger, didn’t know they grew so big, didn’t realise they were also fished as some sort of ridiculous fantasy medicine for illness and sickness… with almost certainly not an ounce of peer supported evidence.

Looks like I’ll have to book a manta snorkel / dive next time!

We’re thinking we may pop out to Lady Elliott island… But short of cash now as we’ve decided to be out of here by March. Lots to do before then.

Hi, I was wondering about the cost of the tour, and also if it is suitable for younger children at all? Thanks!

Just check from the links in the post Kris. It was good value for what it was, but obviously not cheap. Chef booked it and he’s out, I don’t know off the top of my head. No, I wouldn’t say it was suitable for little ones unless they were good swimmers and very comfortable in the water around very big fish. We took ours to the Great Barrier Reef from about 4 years old but this was a lot more challenging.

One of the most thrilling experiences in Hawaii is the opportunity to snorkel at night with manta rays. These gentle giants do barrel rolls and swim around you, often coming within inches of your face.

Want to know more about experiencing this thrill? We have everything you need to know, including what tour operators you should use to have the best experience.

Where can you see manta rays in Hawaii?

The best place to see manta rays in Hawaii is on the Big Island, specifically on the Kona coast. While there are manta rays on the other islands, sightings aren’t as good or reliable, so if you’re hoping to see manta rays while in Hawaii, head to the Big Island. Many Big Island tour operators offer a manta guarantee, something you won’t find on the other islands.

These are our favorite manta ray night snorkeling (and diving) tours on the Big Island . These tour operators operate to the highest environmental standards while still providing you with an amazing experience.

Best places to snorkel and dive with manta rays in Hawaii

If you’re looking to dive or snorkel with manta rays, the best place to do so is on the Big Island. There are numerous tour operators that will take you into the water at night and spend some time with these gentle giants. The Big Island tour operators publish a success rate for sightings of over 80%, so if you want the best odds of finding a manta ray, head to the Big Island.

Can you snorkel with manta rays on Oahu or Maui?

Technically, you can see manta rays on any Hawaiian island, though if you are diving on Oahu or Maui, seeing a manta ray comes down to luck. On Maui, you might have the chance to see a manta ray while snorkeling Molokini or Olowalu, though this is very rare. On Oahu and Kauai, you’ll find even fewer chance encounters.

Unlike the Big Island, there are no specified feeding areas where you can reliably find manta rays night after night (more on the Big Island feeding areas below). So if you do try to go manta ray snorkeling on Oahu or Maui, prepare to be disappointed.

Manta Ray Snorkel Hawaii

Best spots to snorkel or dive with manta rays on the Big Island?

There are three spots where you’ll be able to snorkel or dive with manta rays on the Big Island: Manta Point, Manta Heaven, and Manta Village (Keauhou).

These spots have such a high chance of seeing manta rays because they consistently show up to feed here night after night. Lights placed underwater attract plankton, the main food source of manta rays. After years of conditioning, mantas know that these viewing areas are great places to be fed.

Most tour operators will take you to dive or snorkel with manta rays at one of these three locations.

From north to south the three manta viewing areas are:

Manta Point (Kohala)

Located on the Kohala Coast near the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, Manta Point offers both a viewing area from land as well as an option for swimming with manta rays at night. Manta Point is located at the end of Kauna’oa Bay (or Mauna Kea Beach) and there is a large light shining into the water attracting the plankton. There are also plenty of tour operators that offer night snorkeling in this area.

Manta Heaven (North Kona)

Offshore from the Kona International Airport, you’ll find Makako Bay and Manta Heaven. Known also as popular daytime dive stop Garden Eel Cove, this location has had reliable manta sightings for the last 20 years.

Manta Village (South Kona)

The first manta ray viewing spot on the Big Island is here in Manta Village. This location was first identified when the Kona Surf Hotel shone a spotlight onto the water to showcase the night waves. While the Kona Surf Hotel no longer exists and has been replaced by the Sheraton Kona, this popular manta ray viewing spot has endured.

Manta Village is often cited as the best spot to snorkel with manta rays, as tour operators boast a 96% successful sightings rate .

Best time of day to see Manta Rays in Kona?

If you’re looking to swim or dive with manta rays, you’ll need to wait until the sun goes down — tour operators offer night diving and night snorkeling for manta ray viewing. That’s because lights shining in the water are used to attract the manta rays. The lights attract the plankton and the manta rays then follow to eat the plankton.

You can see manta rays during the daylight hours, but if you do see them during the day, it usually comes down to luck.

Best Big Island Manta Ray Night Snorkeling and Diving Tours

When you’re looking for a tour operator, we recommend selecting one that is on the Manta Green List , which is created and maintained by Hawaii Ocean Watch. This is a list of activity providers who operate to the highest ecological standards. They promise to keep you, the manta rays, and the environment safe.

Tour operators on this list that we recommend using are:

  • Sea Paradise (Manta Village): Enjoy a manta ray night snorkel to Manta Village, near the Kona Sheraton Hotel. Learn more about the manta ray night snorkel with Sea Paradise .
  • Kona Ocean Adventures (Manta Heaven): Choose between a night dive and a night snorkel to Manta Heaven, or Garden Eel Cove. Learn more about the manta ray night snorkel and dive with Kona Ocean Adventures .
  • K ona Honu Divers (Manta Heaven): Head out on a two tank dive. to Garden Eel Cove. This is a longer trip for certified divers only. Learn more about the 2 tank manta ray night dive with Kona Honu Divers .
  • Manta Advocates (Manta Point): Ditch the boat and swim out from shore with this tour operator on the Kohala Coast .

And you can find all of our recommended tours and tour operators on this list of the Best Big Island Tours and Activities .

What’s it like to go on a Manta Ray night snorkel tour?

It’s been said that swimming with manta rays is an experience not to be missed and possibly one of the top bucket list items to experience in your life. Jordan and I have done multiple manta ray snorkeling trips and we agree: it is a heart pounding and memorable experience. You’re in the ocean at night when it is pitch black. If you’re lucky, you have multiple giant manta rays doing barrel rolls and coming within inches of your face.

The experience is thrilling. Here is a video that captures some of our footage so you can see just how close these mantas come to you.

FAQs about Manta Ray Snorkeling:

Still have questions about snorkeling or diving with manta rays? We have you covered.

What happens if you don’t see a manta ray on your snorkel tour?

While tour operators have very high success rates for seeing manta rays, these are still wild animals who don’t always appear when you’re looking. To help make you feel comfortable that your money won’t be wasted, many tour operators offer a manta guarantee.

For example, Sea Paradise has a manta guarantee that if you don’t see a manta ray on the night of your snorkel, you can return for free anytime in the next 7 days for another trip. Tour availability is required.

Is it safe to snorkel with Manta Rays?

Manta rays are not dangerous. Even though they are large and intimidating, they won’t hurt people. People often confuse manta rays with stingrays, but manta rays do not have a stinger or barb.

Manta Ray Advocates has a great video describing the differences between sting rays and manta rays . And they refer to Manta Rays as “gentle giants.”

That said, the danger with snorkeling with manta rays comes from general dangers related to snorkeling. There are strong ocean currents, waves, and weather to consider. Plus, snorkeling happens at night when it is easy to become disoriented in the water. That’s why it’s important to not try to snorkel by yourself and to instead, join a tour offered by a trusted activity provider.

How big are Manta Rays in Hawaii?

On your night snorkeling trip, you’ll be able to see reef manta rays. Reef manta rays grow to have a wingspan of up to 16 feet , though you’ll likely see a manta that is smaller than that.

Can you touch Manta Rays?

No, you may not touch manta rays. One of the criteria to be on the Manta Green list is the promise to never touch manta rays. That’s because you can damage the protective coating on them, opening them up to risk of infection. You can also disorient them. Plus, it’s just not OK to ever touch sea life that you’re observing. Observe without being intrusive.

What is the best time of year to see manta rays in Hawaii?

While whale watching in Hawaii has a specific season (mid-December through mid-April), you can see manta rays at any time of the year in Hawaii. They don’t migrate like whales, so they stay put at their home in Hawaii year-round.

That said, going manta ray snorkeling can be more challenging January – March, when the ocean conditions are less favorable due to winter weather and swells. You might find that your tour is cancelled more often during the winter months, thanks to the rough ocean conditions.

Is there a Manta Ray night snorkel near the Kona Sheraton?

One of our favorite tour operators runs a manta ray night snorkel near the Kona Sheraton Hotel. In fact, guests can walk from the hotel to the tour departure location. Learn more about the manta ray night snorkel with Sea Paradise.

The 5 Best Charters for Night Manta Ray Snorkeling on Big Island

There’s an incredible thrill in floating face down in the ocean at night, with only the sound of your breath flowing through your snorkel. Dim blue lights dot the area, barely illuminating the dark water beneath you. As the first manta ray gracefully emerges from the darkness, your anticipation builds into an unforgettable mix of exhilaration and a bit of fear. Admittedly, it’s a bit nerve-wracking to see the colossal mouth of a giant sea creature swimming directly at you. Until you remember that they are completely harmless and gentle animals.

But that’s the undeniable fun of a Hawaii manta ray snorkel tour. As you relax into the experience and watch in wonder as the manta rays perform a silent, beautiful dance just beneath you, you fully understand why The Travel Channel has hailed this experience as one of the top ten things to do in your life.

The night manta ray snorkel tour has been a consistent tourist attraction for decades. The Kona Surf Hotel (now Outrigger Kona Resort and Spa) opened in the 1970s and installed floodlights to create a beautiful, illuminated view of the ocean for its guests. These lights unexpectedly attracted large concentrations of plankton, which in turn attracted the manta rays that feed on the plankton, leading to the name Manta Village for this stretch of the coast. Eventually, the manta rays associated the floodlights with a consistent source of food year-round, and this, in turn, attracted people from all over the world.

There are quite a few charters to choose from for a Big Island manta ray snorkel tour, but thankfully they are all located along the west coast of the island with a large concentration in Kona, so finding the best option for you is quite convenient.

Tip From a Local: There are two other snorkel locations called Manta Heaven and Manta Point along the west coast, with charter companies concentrated around them as well. However, no matter what charter you choose, they will likely take you to Manta Village as it is the most popular spot. Rather than choosing your manta ray charter based on location, it is better to choose based on the duration of a boat ride that you would prefer. Some of the charters are minutes from Manta Village, while others may take a half-hour or more.

Top 5 manta Ray Snorkeling Tours in Hawaii

Sea Quest Hawaii

For over 30 years, Sea Quest Hawaii has launched countless snorkel tours directly from Keauhou Bay, which is mere minutes away from Manta Village. Their night manta ray snorkel tour has a duration of 1.5 hours, with 45 minutes floating with the mantas. Don’t be fooled by this short time frame, as many other charters might be 2-3 hours in length, but these times include extended boat rides from distant harbors but do not include any additional time in the water. The advantage of this charter is the extremely short boat trip out to the snorkel location, giving you more time to enjoy your vacation while still indulging in this once in a lifetime experience.

Where: They are located a few blocks from Outrigger Kona Resort and Spa. Free parking is available on site for the night manta ray tours at:

78-7138 Kaleiopapa St, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740

Cost: Both tours cost $118 per person, regardless of age, with private charter options available for larger groups.

Perks: The waters of Hawaii are warm, but after dark you will likely get a bit chilly on the boat ride back, so Sea Quest offers complimentary hot chocolate and cookies.

Sea Paradise

Sea Paradise is the friendly neighbor of Sea Quest Hawaii, located in the same harbor complex in Keauhou Bay. Sea Paradise takes a more leisurely approach to their tour with a 1.5-to-2-hour duration (but still 45 minutes in the water). In place of a cramped speed boat or raft, a 50-foot catamaran carries you to the swim site in spacious comfort, even allowing ride-along guests to lounge and enjoy the views of the manta rays from the deck.

Where: They are also located near the Outrigger Kona Resort and Spa. Limited free parking is available on site and along Kaleiopapa St toward the end of the parking lot.

Hours of Operation: Sea Paradise offers two options for their Manta Ray Night Snorkeling tour every day of the week. Their First tour begins at either 6:00 PM or 6:30 PM and their Second tour begins at either 8:30 PM or 9:00 PM, depending on the season.

Tour Details: Shortie wetsuits, all snorkel equipment (including prescription masks) and “state-of-the-art” flotation devices are provided. Previous swimming and snorkeling experience are required.

Wahine Charters

Wahine Charters is nestled partway between Manta Village and Manta Heaven. Because of its location, tours might run in either of those two swim sites, depending on different ocean and weather conditions, and duration can range from 2 to 2.5 hours. Their large, comfortable powerboat makes the longer boat rides pleasurable, but also a bit chilly on the trip back.

Where: This charter is also located just south of the Kona International Airport partway between Manta Village and Manta Heaven just across the harbor from Manta Ray Dives of Hawaii.

Hours of Operation: Wahine Charters offers two options every day for their Manta Ray Night Snorkel tours: Sunset Manta at 6:00 PM and Moonlit Manta at 7:30 PM.

Tour Details: Wetsuits, snorkel gear and flotation devices are provided. Previous swimming and snorkeling experience are not necessarily required, but all guests must be able to climb in and out of the boat.

Cost: Both tours range in cost from $99 + Tax for ages 3-8 and $125 + Tax for ages 9+, while infants ages 0-2 can ride along free of charge.

Perks: Bottled water, juices, hot cocoa, sodas, and fresh fruit are included regularly, with the occasional opportunity to enjoy hot soup as well.

Liquid Hawaii

Owned and operated by sole proprietor Matthew Ferino, Liquid Hawaii limits their manta ray snorkel tours to groups of 6, to maximize each guest’s time in the water. While this charter is located much closer to Manta Point on the northern edge of the west coast, their 2.5-3-hour duration tends to cruise down to Manta Heaven or even Manta Village for their higher success rates for spotting manta rays. But their location is much more convenient for those preferring to explore outside of Kona.

Where: Liquid Hawaii is located further north along the west coast of Big Island, closer to Waimea, just south of Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area.

Hours of Operation: This charter offers two options for their Manta Ray Night Snorkel tour, one departing at 6:30 PM and one at 9:00 PM, but may change depending on time of sunset.

Tour Details: They provide snorkels, masks, and fins as well as shorty wetsuits and flotation devices. All guests must be at least 6 years of age, able to swim and climb a ladder.

Cost: Both tours cost $179 per person, regardless of age.

Perks: Juice, bottled water, soda, and snacks are included.

The Manta Ray Night Snorkel is Kona’s Most Unique Activity

While some people are planning to go to the beach, or visit the coffee or cacao farms, this is something anyone can do many places in Hawaii or throughout the world. The one thing that no other place has is the manta ray night snorkel in Kona.

Who is this for?

Are you a fan of movies like finding nemo or do you like to snorkel or swim? This activity is for you! The manta ray snorkel is by far one of the most accessible activities available in Hawaii while also being one of the most amazing available. It’s truly unique while also being truly epic.

looking up at snorkelers in wetsuits hanging on to a surfboard with lights shining down and a manta ray swimming upsidedown underneath

Imagine a school of fish circling around in front of you. Suddenly they part and a large animal with a 12 foot wingspan resembling a carpet appears slowly swooping a few feet from your face as it gulps gallons of seawater feeding on tiny zooplankton right before your eyes! You’ve just had the closest encounter to an alien you will ever get!

“But it’s at night?” You say. Yes! This is when the manta rays come to our bright lights to feed on the plankton attracted to the light.

When & where does this take place?

The manta ray night snorkel happens every night after the sun sets. This is the best time to see the mantas up close when they are the most hungry.

The best place to start from to see the manta rays is from Kona’s Honokohau small Boat Harbor. This is a superior place to see the mantas because it has easy access to the two best manta ray viewing sites on the entire island. Depending on the manta ray’s behavior, and ocean conditions, boats can easily take you to the best site of the night.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best manta ray night snorkel in the world.

Undoubtedly the Kona Manta Ray night snorkel is the world’s best. This is because of the number and proximity of the mantas. Dozens of Manta Rays can show up just a few hundred feet from shore on any given night.

If you’re going to book a manta ray snorkel in Kona choose the highest rated and most reviewed snorkel company in Hawaii – Kona Snorkel Trips .

How much does it cost to snorkel a manta ray?

Prices Range from $80 for a child or observer up to $199 for a single snorkeler. Private charters can cost $1199 or greater depending on the size of the boat.

Is snorkeling with manta rays worth it?

Easily one of the most impactful tours anyone can book, the manta ray snorkel has people raving about the experience. The exstatic screams, yelling, and cursing from participants in awe of seeing these gentle giants up close is something you cannot get from video.

What is the best time of night to snorkel with manta rays?

After sunset. If you go earlier expect crowds, if you go later there will be fewer boats and it will be quiter. You will get more mantas to yourself.

Where is the best place to see manta rays?

Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii is by far the best manta ray viewing available. If you’re lucky you will see them a few feet away from your face! This is close for a 1200 pound animal with a 12 foot wingspan.

Is night snorkeling with manta rays safe?

Absolutely. When you choose a top-rated operation like Kona Snorkel Trips , their lifeguard-certified guides and attention to safety, means you’ll get the best attention while also having a safe and amazing viewing experience.

Is it better to snorkel or dive with manta rays?

The view is different but similar in that often the manta rays will come very close to both divers and snorkelers. If you have a certification diving with mantas is more expensive but you will get to see more than just the manta rays when you dive on the reef. The snorkel experience is typically much shorter than a dive charter which will be twice as long or more.

What do you wear to manta ray snorkeling?

Wear a swimsuit to go under the wetsuit provided by the snorkel company. If they are a good company they will provide all of the gear necessary to view the mantas comfortably. Bring a towel and sweater to wear after you get out of the water.

Where is the largest manta ray sanctuary?

Manta Rays are protected in Hawaii. There are over 200 known identified manta rays off the Kona coast of the Big Island of Hawaii.

Is snorkeling with manta rays ethical?

While the activity does feed the rays, they naturally feed on the zooplankton attracted by the tour company’s bright lights. So if anything, they are getting fed faster than they would naturally.

Can you swim with manta rays in Kona without a tour?

It is not recommended to attempt to swim with mantas on your own. There are certain industry standards to follow including the gear you use and how to avoid colliding with and injuring the mantas. Individuals will also lack the extremely bright lights that draw the zooplankton and thus the manta rays in close.

What is the weight limit for the manta ray night snorkel?

There is only an age limit, no weight limit. Kona Snorkel Trips allows children 5 and older if they are competent snorkelers. Otherwise people can come as observers without getting in the water.

What time of day are manta rays most active?

At night mantas will feed near shore. This is when they are working hardest to scoop water into their mouth to capture the zooplankton that emerges from the reef.

Do manta rays swim close to shore?

Yes. They will come in to shallow reefs to feed and get cleaned of parasites.

What is the difference between a reef manta ray and a giant manta ray?

The reef manta is smaller and tends to reside in the same area for decades. A pelagic manta ray will spend much of it’s time further offshore in deeper water and are usually only spotted in shallow water when visiting a cleaning station.

Why are manta rays going extinct?

While manta rays are considered threatened, in places like Kona, Hawaii they are protected. The gills are considered a medicinal health tonic by Chinese and so they are sought after by fishing companies looking to supply the demand.

Are manta rays bottom dwellers?

No. They are often seen near the surface and spend some time offshore. They feed on planton suspended in the water but not on the bottom of the ocean floor.

Is it common to see sharks while snorkeling?

Not usually, though some tours can find sharks. For example it’s possible to see white-tip reef sharks in some of the lava caves during the day in Kona, Hawaii.

Night Manta Ray Snorkel in Kona

Snorkeling with Manta Rays at night in Kona waters. The experience of a lifetime!

Quick Details

  • Clock Duration: 1.5 Hours

Please note that previous snorkeling & swimming experience is required

Go Snorkeling with Manta Rays at Night in Kona!

There is a reason everyone is talking about this tour…

Participate in a feeding frenzy in the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean, in the darkness of night, with creatures as large as 16 ft. across and weighing 1,000 lbs. The Travel Channel named this particular tour one of the 10 things you must do in your lifetime, and for good reason. Our Night Manta Experience is a unique and singular experience and this is the only place on the entire planet you can do it at night.

Sea Quest’s point of departure is just a few minutes boat ride from the Big Island’s most successful and consistent manta ray viewing location. Our outstanding Coast Guard certified Captains & crew assist as you simply float above these graceful and glorious gentle giants right outside the mouth of Keauhou Bay. Enjoy nature’s most spectacular nocturnal ballet, available 7 nights a week. An experience you won’t soon forget.

What Will I See While Snorkeling With Manta Rays in Kona?

Because we conduct our manta ray snorkel tours at night, there might be less reef activity than during the day and in different areas around the Kona Coast. But with creatures who have a 10-12 foot wingspan swimming and barrel rolling under you, there will be more than enough entertainment!

Manta Rays feed on the phytoplankton who are attracted to light. Our in-water guide will coach you on how to get comfortable holding onto our state of the art floatation device. This device beams light below the water’s surface in order to bring forth the plankton and therefore the manta rays with them.

Multiple mantas may dance around the rocks and reefs at the ocean’s floor– something that will also be illuminated by our light and the light of the world around Keauhou Bay.

Kona Manta Ray Night Snorkel Tour Features:

  • Snorkel with manta rays…at night!
  • Hot chocolate and cookies
  • Wetsuits and flotation devices provided
  • Snorkel gear (including Rx masks) included

Please Note: For the safety of our guests, staff and the manta rays, we require that all participating guests know how to swim without the assistance of a floatation device and have previous snorkeling experience. No exceptions to the rule. Mahalo!

Check-in and departure times are subject to change based on sunset times throughout the year. Please select your desired date for the available times.

Are Manta Rays Dangerous to Snorkel With?

The shortest and best answer is, no! Unlike their cousin, the Sting Ray, Manta Rays are gentle giants with no spear-tipped tails, or any threatening body part for that matter. The only thing that we emphasize to ensure the safety of our guests as well as our crew, is that you have prior swimming and snorkeling experience. While we won’t be doing a lot of active swimming once in the water– the basics of knowing how to breathe and maintain a calm while the mantas swim around us are important for their safety and ours.

If you have any hesitations about your ability to snorkel on our manta ray trip or even any hesitations around snorkeling at night in general; be sure to check out one of our other, daytime snorkel excursions. These are still a ton of fun and there’s a chance you will be able to see one of the Big Island rays during your time in the water, on these tours, as well!

What is Manta Ray Village, Hawaii?

All of our snorkel tours depart from “Manta Ray Village”. Given its name through the sheer amount of manta rays that live and inhabit Keauhou Bay, there is no question that this is the best place to embark on a night time snorkel tour!

Over the years, the population of the mantas who inhabit the bay’s waters have fluctuated with the popularity of the destinations around Keauhou. Once the Sheraton established their residence, the lights around the bay shone bright attracting increased phytoplankton, which in turn, attracted their predator, the Manta Rays.

When you book with us you are guaranteed the experience of a lifetime swimming with these seemingly prehistoric creatures in the warm waters of Manta Ray Village. While Keauhou Bay is a popular spot to embark on these types of night snorkel tours, we make sure to focus on our group of guests and give them an extremely intimate encounter with the marine creatures.

Kona Snorkel Trips is a Tripadvisor Certificate of Excellence Winner!

We booked the four-hour private morning snorkeling tour — and it was hands-down the best one we’ve done on the Islands. Jeanette And Alexis were incredibly knowledgeable and forthcoming, taking us to quiet spots and ensuring we saw plenty of wildlife above and under the waves. Pilot whales, a spinner dolphin superpod, eagle rays, a zebra eel, and lots of triggerfish, idols, parrot fish, and more. Both guides would would also get in the water, and point our group at notable sights. Above the waves, we learned about Hawaiian history and culture. Big thumbs up!

This is my first Google review. We live in Kona and had some friends visiting who were looking for a fun ocean excursion. We booked a Manta snorkel for three adults and three children (ages 10, 9 and 7). The trip was the most fun we've had on any excursion in Hawai'i. The crew was not only friendly and knowledgeable, but safety was front and center from the time we were at the dock until we returned. Our kids (and us adults) had the time of their lives. Mahalo nui Kona Snorkel Trips. Keep up the excellent work.

Had an amazing experience with their night manta ray tours. 5 manta rays and a monk seal, which the guides said was pretty out of the ordinary. Even better, we had booked a day tour with them - the day before they said they may need to cancel because there werent enough spots filled. We only had that day left to snorkel and they went above and beyond to find us another tour for the morning. Amazing customer service and an amazing experience means 5+ stars. Thank you!

We all had an amazing experience start to finish! This is a small group experience with a fantastic crew. We did the later trip and were blown away by how many rays we saw barrel rolling up close. Between the crew and the abundance of these gentle giants, it was definitely the highlight of our already wonderful trip. We had a 9 and 12 year old with us and they loved it too. I highly recommend Kona Snorkel!

Loved it! The guides made stops to and from Captain Cook to point out land marks, history and share stories. The snorkeling portion was very well guided. I felt safe and had all my questions answered. The guide pointed out all of the sea life and was a strong swimmer. Length of time at Captain Cook was perfect as well. My personal goal was to see an octopus and we did! We saw tons of different fish, a sea turtle, octopus an eel and beautiful coral. Snacks and drinks were perfect after the swim. I highly recommend this company for a snorkeling tour. Fun, organized, thoughtful, full of beauty and adventure.

Excellent customer service! There was a problem with our reservation due our mistake while booking it and they were prompt to answer my call and provided a reasonable solution to it. We are really looking forward to our snorkeling experience now that our reservation is set. It is gonna our first visit to Hawaii and I’m glad we were able to get this booked ahead of time.

The mantas were active and fun to see. The crew and captain were cheerful and knowledgeable. Highly recommend!

Our family of five (two adults, three teens) had a great time in the night manta snorkel trip. We had the fantastic all-female crew, who were enthusiastic, professional, and informative. We were on the float with Shayleigh(sp?), who kept the stoke high and helped us attract a lovely manta. We saw a small reef shark and a few other fish while out. The manta swooped and rolled near us for over 20 minutes, allowing for lots of views and video. Thanks to the whole crew for being awesome stewards of the ocean and sea life! Highly recommend!

My boyfriend and I had a great time on the morning snorkel and boat tour! The captain and guide were both friendly and kept things safe and fun. We were encouraged to point out dolphins so we could get as close as is allowed to them, and it was so cool to see them do tricks from the boat. The speedboat itself was so cool, too. If you like adventure, I recommend sitting in the front for a bumpy ride :). We also had a great time snorkeling in Captain Cook. The snorkel is a popular spot for tours as it’s usually a 4-mile hike to the spot. The water is sooo blue and we even saw reef sharks from a distance. 100% recommend!

We had a great time with Sheri and Jeanette! They were so knowledgeable and helfpul. What really made the difference is that they got into the water themselves and guided us around the reef and helping the not so great swimmers in my group to locate fish. Everyone had a blast. What was also great is that we went to a spot that was off the beaten path and we had the place all to ourselves! highly recommend this tour.

Took the whale watching tour. Saw a number of whales and dolphins. Liked the boat which is close to the water vs. the larger boats. The crew was very knowledgeable and friendly. Highly recommended.

Really enjoyed the morning snorkel trip! We saw spinner dolphins, whales, a turtle, Manta rays and an octopus! Snorkeling was clear and beautiful. Crew was attentive and knowledgeable. Great work Shelene and Andy!

I would give them a million stars if i could!!! We got to see five manta rays that got within face touching distance! Followed by an incredibly smooth star gazing boat ride! Great people! 10/10 would recommend

We did the night Manta trip and it was EPIC. The crew was amazing! They made sure we were safe and had a good time. They were professional and knowledgeable. And fun!! We saw so many Mantas! So close we could see right through them. I’ve never been so impressed by an excursion in my life. Captain Andy, Janelle and Resa were the best! Thank you for the memories of a lifetime.

We depart from Honokohau Marina located between town and Kona airport from our very own dock. You won’t have to struggle to find parking and board on the busy launch ramp like other operators require. Our meetup begins under a shade awning with a view of the beautiful harbor. If you look closely you may see a turtle or an eagle ray swimming along the surface. Your Kona snorkel tours begin with a briefing from our experienced and knowledgeable crew. We’ll get you outfitted with your snorkel gear which includes mask, snorkel, fins, and wetsuit. Sometimes we also provide extra floatation depending on the trip and your requirements.

As we leave the harbor you may be treated by jumping spinner dolphins or during winter months whales tail slapping, blowing, and if you’re lucky breaching! Cruising along Kona’s rocky coastline reveals the freshness of the island as a volcano. The steep sides of our volcanic home means the reefs are abundant and close to the shore. Some of the best snorkeling in Hawaii is located in the Kona area. Our afternoon and morning snorkels highlight this magnificent feature not to be missed! All kona snorkel tours include clear water and pristine reefs teaming with colorful reef fish. If you’re lucky you may swim alongside one of our green sea turtles or spot a white tip reef shark sleeping under a ledge. Our reefs are also abnormally abundant with octopus and eels making for some unique encounters. Our crew will get you close to some of the best snorkeling Big Island has. Our crew is made up of passionate individuals that love the ocean and the animals that live there. Every one of our staff is lifeguard certified ensuring that we are prepared for any incident should it arise. We have outfitted our Kona boat the Orca with propeller guards and we are currently the only boat in Kona with them installed. This means any marine life that is swimming on or near the surface will be protected from our boat’s propellers. This is important because it is a common occurrence to spot dolphins, mantas, and other critters with propeller damage. We also carry state-of-the-art rescue equipment on board and maintain our boat to the highest standards so you have a clean and reliable experience.

Our livelihood is intertwined with the ocean and so it only makes sense we would do our best to protect it. This means we require only reef-safe sunscreen to be used on board by our guests. This ensures the continued growth of our healthy corals. Come see the beauty of our reefs for yourself!

  • Chevron down Why Kona Snorkeling is the Best

If you’ve snorkeled anywhere in Hawaii you’ve probably had some unique and interesting experiences so why should you snorkel in Kona? Kona has very little sand because of the Big Island’s newness. This means the clarity of our water is much better on an average day than on other islands. The lava also provides for some dramatic underwater features that you won’t see on other older islands. Arches, lava tubes, and caverns are abundant along the Kona coast. Add to this the history of the Captain Cook story, the magnificence of the manta rays, and the abundance of large marine life, and you’ll see why Kona snorkeling tours are the pinnacle of snorkeling in Hawaii. So Join us on one of our Kona snorkel tours to see for yourself why you’re missing out on some of the best snorkeling in Hawaii with Hawaii’s top-rated snorkel company Kona snorkel trips.

MANTA NIGHT SNORKEL CHARTER

Hawaii manta snorkel.

Experience close encounters with these beautiful wild animals while snorkeling around a lighted raft. Our in-water guides help find mantas feeding at the surface after dark and ensure the safety and comfort of our guests. Our earlier launch time includes sunset and is the most popular manta snorkel. You won't enter the water until it's dark so don't let the early check-in time fool you! Our "late manta" is also a night adventure that usually means fewer people in the water. You have the same chance of seeing mantas on either charter!

Prerequisites

Each guest on the boat must be at least 10 years old and be able to confidently swim in the open ocean without the assistance of a flotation device. It may sound counterintuitive, but we don’t allow flotation devices to be used while you’re in the water. All guests entering the water must have previous snorkel experience. These guidelines are in place for your safety as well as the safety of our crew and the other snorkelers in the group so concessions cannot be made. For safety reasons, all guests joining any of our vessels must be able to understand and communicate in English.

Masks, fins, snorkel, and wetsuit. Snorkelers are encouraged to bring any personal snorkel gear they wish to use. For safety reasons, full-face snorkel masks are not permitted on any of our charters.

We also provide filtered water and a variety of snacks.

Please Bring

  • Any additional snacks or non-alcoholic beverages you’d like.
  • Dry towels and something cozy to wear on the ride home.
  • Exposure protective clothing, and only non-aerosol reef-safe sunscreen. Please read this short article. If your local stores don’t carry it, don’t worry! We have a variety of reef-safe sunscreen available for purchase in our shop.
  • Guests who are prone to motion sickness are encouraged to use an anti-emetic such as Bonine or Dramamine before boarding the boat.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the COVID policies on the boat?

Guest safety is our top priority. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our captains routinely disinfect all touch surfaces on our boats. Hand sanitizer is available. Our dive groups are kept small & our charter capacities are in line with current Hawaii County rule. If you have any questions or concerns, please give our shop a call!

Can I wear a life jacket?

We don't allow life jackets on our manta charters. While this seems counterintuitive for a night-time snorkeling activity in the open ocean, we don’t allow life jackets for your safety & the safety of the manta rays. Snorkelers hold onto a floating raft during the entire manta snorkel. All snorkelers must keep their bodies flat at the surface so legs & fins do not kick mantas feeding close below. Life jackets keep snorkelers in an upright body position so that legs & fins accidentally kick mantas, potentially causing injury & scaring the animals away. We use wetsuits which make the entire body float, including your legs. If you are concerned about your ability to swim or snorkel without a life jacket we advise renting a wetsuit & practicing snorkeling during the daytime. Please contact us with any questions!

Can I dive down or freedive during the manta ray snorkel?

Nope! Snorkelers stay flat on the surface, and divers hug the bottom. We leave the middle of the water column to the manta rays. Freediving with these large animals is prohibited as it interferes with feeding and is potentially harmful to the manta rays.

Are the mantas dangerous?

Mantas do not have stingers or barbs. They cannot bite you and they are not poisonous. They are generally harmless creatures who use speed and agility as their primary defense mechanisms. That said, mantas are very large fish (sometimes weighing over 1000 pounds!) and can swim quite fast, so we encourage giving mantas as much space and respect as possible. We absolutely do not allow any touching, chasing, or harassing of the manta rays or any other sea life.

Can I do the manta dive if I’m not certified?

For the safety and enjoyment of all participants we do not allow any non-certified guests to dive SCUBA for the manta ray night dive. No tour operator in the Kona area allows non-certified individuals to dive with mantas, unless they are breaking dive agency standards. Non-certified guests are welcome to enjoy our manta ray night snorkel experience or to try a discover SCUBA dive on our two tank local morning charter.

How long am I in the water with the mantas?

Both SCUBA divers and snorkelers will spend about 45 minutes in the water.

Can I touch the mantas? Can I touch any wildlife underwater?

Manta rays are a protected species in Hawaii and we absolutely do not allow any touching, chasing, or harassing of the manta rays.

Dolphins and whales are guarded under the Marine Mammal Protection Act and we only allow passive interaction. This means no chasing, harassing, touching, riding, etc.

When in the ocean, it's always best to look but not touch.

I have booked a night manta swim for my son and I in July. Will we require a wetsuit or will boardshorts and rashie do? Seems the water temp will be pleasant.

3 replies to this topic

Depends what pleasant in the dark means to you. No sun it may seem colder. They probably have wetsuits if you decide you want them, hopefully you can get in the water another time before going on the swim to test the waters..

We did a night manta snorkel in July and the water was cool

We always wear a shorty snorkel jacket year round even during the day snorkeling

You won’t need a full wet suit and you can rent snorkel jackets at Snorkel Bob’s ahead of time if you think you need them

We did this last May, and the tour operator provided short sleeved wetsuit tops. I wore my long sleeved rash guard underneath, and have low body fat (I get cold easily), and I was fine. What I would recommend would be to take something warm to wear to put on after the event on the way back to shore, or at the very least a large towel to wrap up in. Also, take some kind of motion sickness meds. We did and were fine, and many of those who did not were green and sick. They looked miserable 🤢
