The Best Live Music in Bali
updated June 4, 2022, 7:36 pm 43.6k Views 3 Comments
You will be missing out if you don’t check out some of the best live music in Bali after dark. The live music scene in Bali is getting bigger and better, with international artists performing alongside local bands playing both original songs as well as covers. Indonesian musicians, singers and songwriters are some of the best in the world in my opinion, combining serious technical expertise with a level of creativity and passion that’s hard to find in such abundance elsewhere.
The Orchard Bar & Restaurant
The best live music venue in Bali by far is The Orchard Bar & Restaurant in Seminyak.
The Orchard is an English-style pub tucked away behind Jalan Seminyak (Jalan means Road in Indonesian) but is easily accessible. You wouldn’t think an English pub would be the place to find the best local bands and artists, but it’s true. Almost every night of the week the owner Graeme hosts some of the most extraordinarily talented musicians both locally and overseas – check out their artist wall of fame for a taste of who has played there. It has gained a well-deserved reputation for great live music, so be sure to schedule some time to drop in.
Monday is jam night and is gaining a well-deserved reputation, especially with visiting artists, for being a muso’s night where a mix of accomplished professionals along with the occasional outstanding amateur gets to show their skills on the best stage in Bali.
Hosted by Rheta Ahreta it’s rapidly turning into one of the best live music nights on the island. Tuesday is singer/songwriter night where again an invited cast of original artists get to showcase their talents. Thursday is “Rock ‘n’ Soul” with a reputation among local and visiting musicians that often get called up to jam with the headline act. This is as far from an in-house band playing their nightly repertoire as you can get, and is guaranteed not only a great night out but the chance to see some very talented musicians playing under pressure among their peers.
Saturday is host to the now famously known “Marmalade Sessions” with the well-known The Island Souls headlining the best rock night in Bali.
The best live music in Bali can be found on Gang Baik Baik accessed off Jalan Nakula, it’s only a 10-minute walk from Bintang Supermarket in Seminyak.
Address: Jl. Nakula Gg. Baik-Baik, Seminyak Opening Hours: Mo-Su 08:00-01:00 Phone: +62-857-8941-9634
Old Man’s (currently closed)
Old Man’s is a bit of an institution in Bali. Located right next to Batu Bolong Beach it’s one of my all-time favourite spots for taking guests for an afternoon on the beach followed by sunset and the legendary happy hour. They have half-price between drinks between 5-6 pm every day – get the espresso martini or a cold-ish Bintang – while waiting for the band to set up and see if you like them before settling in or moving on. Don’t be disappointed if the queue is long during happy hour, as it’s very popular and the bartenders tend to work slowly. Understandable considering how cheap the drinks are, so don’t be annoyed. Enjoy it, and check out the fantastic sunset while you’re waiting. They have a great events calendar on Facebook which tends to be updated regularly.
Venue: Old Man’s Adress: Pantai Batu Bolong Street No.117X, Canggu, Bali Opening Hours: Mo-Su 07:00-01:00 Phone: +62-361-846-9159
Laughing Buddha Bar
The best venue for live music in Ubud, Laughing Budhha Bar is a bit of an institution in Bali. It’s not a huge bar, but the intimate feel only improves the atmosphere as the bands are literally performing right in front of you. There isn’t a bad seat in the house but it definitely pays to either get there early or make reservations because it fills up fast. Their restaurant and tapas menu is pretty good with a full line-up of cocktails made by some very competent bartenders. Some of my favourite bands play regularly at Laughing Buddha. Unb’rocken is rapidly and deservedly gaining a reputation for laying down some truly talented blues and rock, both covers and originals regularly on Monday nights. And do not miss Ika and The Soul Brothers playing an amazing night of funk and soul on Friday nights.
Venue: Laughing Buddha Bar Adress: Jl. Monkey Forest, Ubud, Bali Opening Hours: Mo-Su 09:00-01:00 Phone: +62 361-970-928
Hard Rock Cafe
One of the biggest live music venues in Bali is Centrestage at The Hard Rock Cafe, located along the beachside strip in Kuta at the beginning end of the long one-way road adjoining the beach. They have live bands playing Sunday through Thursday from 9:30 PM – 1:00 AM and Fridays and Saturdays from 9:30 PM – 2:00 AM.
If they had a better website I would link to it for upcoming events, but finding out what’s on for any given night is a bit of a moving target. Go along and chance your luck. And if you get the chance to see Ika and The Soul Brothers grab it with both hands.
Venue: Hard Rock Cafe Adress: Jalan Pantai Kuta, Banjar Pande Mas No.1, Kuta, Bali Opening Hours: Mo-Su 11:30-01:00 Phone: +62-361-755-661
Ryoshi House Of Jazz
Upstairs at this great little Japanese restaurant on Seminyak’s main street is the home of jazz in Bali. Ryoshi has live artists performing Monday and Fridays only.
Venue: Ryoshi House Of Jazz Adress: Jl. Raya Seminyak No.17, Seminyak Opening Hours: Mo-Su 12:00-24:00 Phone: +62-361-847-5950
Yes, there really is a place called L.O.L. Bar. Another great live music spot in Ubud, L.O.L has bands performing six nights a week, predominantly reggae, blues and hard rock. If you’re an aficionado of reggae then you have to come here and check out the local reggae musicians.
It gets busy around 8:30-9 pm so if you want a prime table beside the dance floor then best to get there for dinner earlier.
Venue: LOL Bar Address: Jl. Monkey Forest, Ubud Opening Hours: Mo-Su 11:00-01:00 Phone: +62-361-973-398
While hosting regular DJ’s they also have live bands playing and is well worth the time to check it out. Chances are if Old Mans doesn’t have live music The Lawn will. It’s easily found. Located in Canggu just across the road and 50m down a laneway from Old Man’s.
Venue: The Lawn Address: Jl. Pura Dalem, Canggu Opening Hours: Mo-Su 10:00-23:00 Phone: +62-821-4592-7396

The music of Bali is one of the gateways to this culturally and artistically rich island for visitors. Music is present everywhere in Bali, and there is a greater concentration of orchestras and musicians in Bali than elsewhere in the world. Music plays, quite literally, an important role in sharing a region’s culture with visitors and foreigners. It paves the way for communities to express themselves without the barrier of language.
Music features in every part of life in the region and is very diverse. Villages and temples form the centre of music in the province, with each village having multiple music clubs. An essential part of music culture in Bali is instruments not belonging to individuals but groups like the music clubs or sekas.
Types of Balinese Musical Instruments:
1. ceng-ceng.
Named after the “ceng ceng ceng” sound it makes upon being hit, this instrument is made of metal and shaped like a cymbal. On the outside of the metal cymbal are red threads used for holding, and music is made by hitting one plate with the other. The ceng-ceng accompanies almost all types of Balinese music.
2. Genggong
The genggong is made of a bamboo frame with a tongue cut from a palm sugar leaf. The instrument is played by sucking in the “playah” at one end and pulling on the string attached to the tongue. Different vowel sounds produce different notes, and music is produced by vibrations.
Consisting of 11 bamboo rods and played by hitting the rods with a rubber mallet, the rindik produces a delicate hum. This hum is born out of the bamboo rods being tuned in pairs, with each one slightly higher than the previous. Rindik compositions usually take inspiration from nature and differ in each village in Bali. In musical celebrations, multiple people play a rindik, and flutes, gongs, ceng-cengs and the like accompany it.
Gongs have been used in the region since the 13th century and are a traditional part of not only Balinese music but also the music of Indonesia. Gongs are versatile and feature in Bali’s contemporary music scene, often used in collaboration with electronic music.
Made out of bamboo tubes, flutes are blown to make music. A flute is made out of a bamboo tube with six holes in its belly. Flute players know which of these holes to cover to make different sounds. In Bali, flutes, also known as the suling, are played using a circular breathing technique to make a constant sound, which is very different from the rest of Indonesia.
The kendang is a drum used in Indonesia, with two heads that are beaten to make music. Kendangs are an important part of the gamelan orchestra, and in Bali, they are used in pairs. For example, a gamelan in Bali uses a low-pitched kendang called the kendang wadon and a high-pitched one called the kendang lanang. Along with these two, Bali is home to seven types of kendangs of different sizes. From the largest to the smallest, they are the kendang mebarung, the kendang tambur, the kendang bebedug, the kendang cedungan, the kendang gupekan, the kendang bebarongan, and the kendang krumpungan.
7. Mandolin
The mandolin is a stringed percussion instrument played by plucking at its strings. Mandolins became popular in the region after the Japanese occupation of Indonesia and have now become an essential part of the gamelan orchestra.
Gamelan Gong - Traditional Balinese Orchestra:
A style of orchestra indigenous to Bali and Java, gamelan consists of gongs, flutes, xylophones, tambourines like the kendang, drums and the like. Gamelan is an essential part of Bali’s culture, bringing people together and allowing them free expression.
While Balinese and Javanese gamelan developed similarly under the Majapahit Empire, most of Indonesia converted to Islam during the 15th century. Bali, however, remained predominantly Hindu, reflected in its gamelan music developing differently. For example, the region’s orchestra featured a quick tempo and focussed on virtuosity, unlike the more meditative Javanese gamelan.
There are over 20 different types of gamelan in Bali, with each type having its own context and tradition. The gamelan gong gede of the Batur temple is believed to be the oldest form of gamelan in Bali. The gamelan semar pegulingan from the east of Bali features seven tones, while the gamelan pelegongan has five tones. The gamelan gong keybar is the most modern form of the orchestra in Bali, having developed in the early 20th century, and features a much quicker tempo. Portable gamelan styles, like the gamelan bebonangan and gamelan angklung, are part of temple ceremonies and religious processions.
Places to Experience Gamelan Music
1. Ubud Palace
Gamelan accompanies dance shows here, and visitors are treated to captivating costumes and dance movements. Ubud Palace also provides a brochure explaining the performance in English.
2. Cenik Wayah Children’s Gamelan and Dance Group, Ubud Water Palace
Against the stunning backdrop of the Ubud Water Palace, this performance features talented children and young adults putting on an enjoyable show.
3. Mekar Bhuana
Mekar Bhuana offers an all-around gamelan experience. Visitors can interact with gamelan experts and learn about this musical tradition, and even try learning to play a few of the instruments. Along with watching a gamelan performance, visitors can also purchase instruments.
4. Bale Banjar Kelod
Bale Banjar Kelod features an all-woman gamelan performance, as well as multiple dance performances such as the famous seated dance.
Gamelan groups routinely perform or rehearse in the town of Ubud, and most groups are open to visitors dropping in on these rehearsals. These performances are a very different experience from scheduled performances but are as lively and fun an experience.

Top 14 Music Festivals in Bali to Experience This Year (2024)
Looking for the best music festivals in Bali in 2024!? Well, look no further, because I’ve compiled the ultimate list of festivals and important events on the “Island of the Gods”!
The truth is though, that when it comes to Bali Festivals – there are really not all THAT many to choose from! I do have this strong feel however that won’t be the case for all that long. Major music festival brands from around the world are finally starting to realize that Bali is the perfect place for a destination festival, and each year I see more and more popping up.
There are tons of Bali festivals, and when it comes to electronic music events, these would be my top recommendations…
1) DJakarta Warehouse Project
Image via DWP
When : December, 2024
Where : Bali, Indonesia
Website : http://www.djakartawarehouse.com/
When it comes to the biggest EDM events in Asia, then there really is no competition with the legendary Djakarta Warehouse Project in Indonesia. They celebrated their 10-year anniversary a few years ago at their brand home in Bali (moving there from Jakarta), and I was actually there to attend myself!
Complete with three beautifully massive stages, a star-studded EDM line-up, and an overall stellar production – DWP is definitely a festival to check out for fans of electronic dance music.
2) GypsyLand Festival
When: July, 2024
Where: Seminyak, Bali
Website: https://www.gypsy.land/
Gypsy Land Festival is the largest techno festival in Indonesia.
“Gypsy Land is a two day techno doof held on a three hectare plot of land in Seminyak, Bali . It’s an interactive immersive environment where worlds collide, it’s good versus evil. There’s a heavy focus on set design, costume and non-musical entertainment. Gypsy Land has two realms, the Badlands and the Wonderlands
Escape to the Wonderlands a psychedelic refuge, a place for all you enlightened pixies. It’s glitter, butterflies and all things bliss. Alice awaits you, take her hand and join her on a magical journey
Enter the Badlands a post apocalyptic world, a trash filled landscape reminiscent of mad max. Why be nice when you can be naughty? It’s the end of the world, join the bad batch and indulge in all your sinful desires.”
3) This is Life Festival

In Gili Air, we are all about the simple life, music and love. No motorised vehicles… just horse and cart, and bicycles. We are family, lovers, free spirits. We care for each other, the environment and promote compassion and kindness. We welcome you to join our community if you are the same. Let’s party!”

I’ve been to Bali twice so far and it’s beyond beautiful. Why would anyone go to Bali to listen to DJ/rap/electronic music? It’s a vulgar affront to how beautiful Bali is. I would attend the jazz, blues, and yoga festivals, nothing else. Why not a gamelan festival? I first went to Bali mostly to study gamelan. I then played in a gamelan in southern California for two years. Gamelan has influenced modern rockers King Crimson and you can hear that influence on the album, “Discipline” which has gamelan style interconnecting guitar parts.

Gamelan Balinese Traditional Music
Music and dance play an essential part in daily Balinese life, and as a tourist you can’t fail to experience it, either at a special tourist show, in rehearsal or at a temple festival. Traditionally, Balinese dancers and musicians have always learnt their craft from the experts in their village and by imitating other performers. In the 1960s, however, the government felt that Bali’s traditional arts were in danger of dying out and so two schools for the performing arts were founded: one for children of high-school age, now located in Batubulan; the other for advanced degree-level students, next to the Taman Budaya Arts Centre in Denpasar. Feelings about these two establishments have been mixed, with some performers anticipating a gradual whittling away of the traditional variety of forms and styles as graduates of the schools return to teach a blander, more standardized technique to the youngsters in their home villages.
The national music of Bali is gamelan, a jangly clashing of syncopated sounds once described by the writer Miguel Covarrubias as being like “an Oriental ultra-modern Bach fugue, an astounding combination of bells, machinery and thunder”. The highly structured compositions are in fact produced by a group of 25 or more musicians seated cross-legged on the ground at a variety of bronze percussion instruments – gongs, metallophones, and cymbals with a couple of optional wind and stringed instruments tuned either to a five-or (less commonly) a seven-tone scale, and most are performed at an incredible speed. One recent study of a gamelan performance found that each instrumentalist played an average of seven notes per second.
Gamelan is actually the Javanese word for the bronze instruments, and the music probably came over from Java around the fourteenth century, but the Balinese duly adapted it to suit their own personality, and now the sounds of the Javanese and Balinese gamelan are distinctive even to the untrained ear. Javanese gamelan music is more restrained. This modern Balinese style, known as gong kebyar (gong means orchestra, kebyar translates, aptly, as lightning flashes), has been around since the early 1900s, emerging at a time of great political upheaval on the island, when the role of Bali’s royal houses was irreparably dented by Dutch colonial aggression.
Over eighty years later, gamelan orchestras are an essential part of village life. Every banjar that can afford to buy a set of instruments has its own sekeha (music club), and a recent census found that there are currently 1500 active gong kebyar orchestras on the island. In most communities, the sekeha is open to men only (the all-female gamelan of Peliatan is a rare experience), but has no restriction on age, welcoming keen players of any standard and experience between the ages of about eight and eighty. Players are not professional musicians, they all do other jobs during the daytime and rarely get paid for any musical performances. Rehearsals generally happen after nightfall, either in the bale banjar or in the temple’s bale gong pavilion. There’s special gong music for every occasion-for sacred and secular dance, cremations, odalan festivities and wayang kulit shows-but players never learn from scores (in fact few gong compositions are ever notated), preferring instead to have it drummed into them by repetitive practice. Whatever the occasion, gong players always dress up in the ceremonial uniform of their music club, and make appropriate blessings and ritual offerings to the deities. Like dancers, musicians are acutely conscious of their role as entertainers of the gods.
Although the gamelan kebyar is currently by far the most fashionable style of music in Bali, and therefore the most common type of orchestra. There are over twenty other different ensemble variations on the island as well. The smallest ensemble is the four-piece gender wayang that traditionally accompanies the wayang kulit shadow play performances. The largest is the old-fashioned classical Javanese-style orchestra comprising fifty instruments, known as the gamelan gong. The classic sounds of the Balinese gamelan are produced mainly by bronze instruments, but there are also a few orchestras composed entirely of bamboo instruments. These ensembles are a particular specialty of western Bali, where they’re known as gamelan joged bumbung and gamelan jegog.
The most common orchestra, the gong kebyar, is composed of at least 25 individual instruments, and always features half a dozen tuned gongs, a few sets of metallophones, two drums, a few sets of cymbals and one or more flutes. The leader of the orchestra, takes leads from the dancers during performances. This he does by fluttering or raising his hands from his seated position close to the front of the stage. Holding a double-ended cylindrical drum, the kendang, on his lap, he controls the tempo of the piece by beating out the rhythm, usually with his hands, on both drum heads.

Because not only that we find them one of the most recommended Asian fusion & Western restaurants in town, they never fail to orchestrate a truly enjoyable and unforgettable night with their splendid band taking requests and guests get in the groove and dance.
Their music choice is rather unique compared to the rest on this list, with acoustic session starts at 6 PM followed by full on rock band at 8 PM. While your ears are being pampered by the music, take our recommendation and try their Rendang, Soft Shell Crab Salad, and for dessert, go with Nutella Deep Fried Ice Cream that guaranteed will satisfy your sweet tooth cravings.
2 Laughing Buddha Bar

3 Hard Rock Cafe
Hard Rock is a haven for fans of music, food, and great times. It’s been known around the world, and we have one right here on the island of Bali, marked by the iconic double-neck giant guitar, a replica of an original guitar from Bali’s well-known guitarist Balawan.
Everyone is welcome at Hard Rock Cafe Bali, where great food and live music take center stage and rock gods and royalty are honored.
4 Ryoshi House Of Jazz
Is there a better way to spend a warm Bali evening than with friends and enjoying a bowl of Miso Soup and a Sashimi platter while having jazz musicians playing in the background? If you feel jazzy enough, Ryoshi Seminyak is the right place for those who love jazz music.
Get to know the Magic Fingers Jazz Musician, Erik Sondhy and his band Rio Quarter who’ll—without fail—boost your sense of jazz tune.
5 Moonlite Kitchen & Bar
Picture this: rooftop, trendy bar lounge, open kitchen, Balinese inspired dining room, and the open-air deck with panoramic Indian Ocean views. Imagine all that with live music playing just as the sun goes down.
Moonlite Kitchen & Bar provides you with a lustful menu of enchanting modern Asian cuisine flavors, an extensive selection of traditional, classic and modern beverages, including seductive cocktails and a well-stocked wine list. Planning on a romantic dinner date? You know where to go.
6 Cafe La Pasion

Even if your schedule is too tight to squeeze in two hours of gamelan, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a glimpse of the majestic musical attraction. Many villas provide traditional performances for their guests. If this is something you would be interested in, choose accommodation with complimentary gamelan shows, like Laghawa Beach Inn. Villa Puri Nirwana can arrange performances, usually for weddings, but these aren’t complimentary and there is an additional charge for the service.

Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.
Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.
Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.
We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.

SARASWATI DAY
Saraswati Day honors Saraswati, the Hindu goddess of education, music, arts, wisdom, and learning, and occurs every 210 days on the Balinese calendar. People clean and dust their books the day before the celebration, and then make offerings to Saraswati on the day of the event. To emphasize the significance of the study, these presents are generally put inside books. Pagerwesi, which falls three days after Saraswati Day, is held to defend knowledge from evil (Pagerwesi literally means “iron barrier”).

GALUNGAN AND KUNINGAN
Galungan is a 10-day festival that commemorates the triumph of good (dharma) over evil (adharma). Balinese Hindus believe that the gods descend to earth to join in the festivities and that the spirits of the deceased will return to their homes if offerings are left for them — look for penjor, which are tall poles decorated with fruit, leaves, and flowers and placed outside homes all over the island. This year it will occur in January and in June.
