Founded as the sole Catholic colony in strongly Protestant America, and, in the nineteenth century, one of the most contentious slave states in the Union, MARYLAND has always been unique. Within its small, irregularly shaped geometry, its attractions range from the frantic boardwalk beaches of Ocean City to the sleepy fishing villages of the Chesapeake Bay and the little-known hamlets of the Eastern Shore. The Chesapeake Bay’s legendary blue crabs and sweet rockfish, served by roadside places in the Bay’s colonial-era towns, are additional reasons to drop in.
Maryland’s largest city is the busy port of Baltimore, a quirky metropolis with a revitalized urban waterfront, a thriving cultural scene and eclectic neighbourhoods. Western Maryland stretches over a hundred miles to the Appalachian foothills, its rolling farmlands notable chiefly for the Civil War killing grounds at Antietam. Just twenty miles south of Baltimore, picturesque Annapolis has served as Maryland’s capital since 1694 and is best known for its national naval academy. Some of the state’s most worthwhile spots are across the Chesapeake Bay on the Eastern Shore, connected to the rest of the state by the US-50 bridge but still a world apart.
Maryland’s capital since 1694, ANNAPOLIS has changed little in size and appearance over the centuries, its charmingly narrow, time-worn streets making it among the more engaging small US cities.
At the centre of Annapolis, overlooking the town’s dense web of streets, stands the stately Georgian beauty that is the Maryland State House. The structure was completed in 1779, and for six months between 1783 and 1784 it served as the official Capitol of the USA; it remains the nation’s oldest statehouse still in use. The Old Senate Chamber, off the grand entrance hall, is where the Treaty of Paris was ratified in 1784, officially ending the Revolutionary War. A statue of George Washington stands here on the spot where, three weeks before the treaty signing, he resigned his commission as head of the Continental Army. Also on the grounds of the State House is the cottage-sized Old Treasury, built in 1735 to hold colonial Maryland’s currency reserves.

The nickname 'America in Miniature' perfectly captures Maryland: this small state possesses all of the best bits of the country, from the Appalachian Mountains in the west to sandy white beaches in the east. A blend of northern street smarts and Southern down-home appeal gives this border state an appealing identity crisis. Its main city, Baltimore, is a sharp, demanding port town; the Eastern Shore jumbles art-and-antique-minded city escapees and working fishermen; and the DC suburbs are packed with government and office workers seeking green space, and those seeking more affordable rents. Yet it all somehow works – scrumptious blue crabs, Natty Boh beer and lovely Chesapeake country being the glue that binds it all. This is also an extremely diverse and progressive state, and was one of the first in the USA to legalize gay marriage.

Best places to visit in maryland.
Maryland is often called America in Miniature thanks to its varied landscape and diversity of cultures and attractions. But while the state may be small, its sprawling shorelines , lively cities and historical sites make it an ideal vacation destination. U.S. News took into account a number of factors, including the state's variety of things to do, affordability and accessibility, to determine the best places to visit in Maryland. Help determine next year's list by voting for your favorite spots below.
Ocean City, MD
Assateague island, antietam national battlefield, chesapeake beach, deep creek lake, national harbor, chesapeake & ohio canal national historical park.
With its pristine stretch of sand and bevy of kid-friendly attractions, Ocean City is the quintessential family vacation destination. Its 10-mile-long beach offers gentle waves that are great for swimming and boogie boarding, plus superb sunrises and fishing opportunities. What's more, Ocean City boasts an impressive boardwalk with all kinds of amenities. In addition to featuring plenty of souvenir shops, bars and restaurants, the boardwalk offers amusement park rides, arcade games and fun attractions, such as Trimper Rides amusement park.
Head to Assateague Island, which sits less than 10 miles south of Ocean City, to enjoy a relaxing, nature-filled vacation. The Maryland side of this barrier island is mostly occupied by Assateague Island National Seashore, where miles of sandy beaches and several hiking and bike trails are available. There's also Assateague State Park, with an oceanfront park and wildlife-filled marshes. While swimming, surfing, beachcombing, sunbathing or surf fishing, keep your eyes peeled for Assateague Island's famous wild horses. But remember, these majestic creatures are wild, so you'll want to admire them from a safe distance.
Overlooking the Chesapeake Bay, Annapolis is a prime spot to get out on the water. The Sailing Capital of the U.S. provides countless opportunities to explore by boat. Additionally, Annapolis hosts multiple sailing-focused events throughout the year, including boat shows and sailboat races. But if you'd rather stay on land, don't fret: The town is home to the beautiful United States Naval Academy campus, as well as Historic Annapolis, where you'll find art galleries, shops and attractions like the Banneker-Douglass Museum. When you're ready to eat, visit Main Street to try a local specialty: steamed crabs.
Antietam National Battlefield in Sharpsburg is a must-visit destination for history buffs. It was here in 1862 that Confederate General Robert E. Lee first invaded the North, resulting in the bloodiest single-day battle in American history, the Battle of Antietam. Today, those who want to learn more about this historic conflict can take a self-guided auto tour of the battlefield or join a ranger-led talk. Just be sure to save some time for a visit to the Newcomer House, an original home on the battlefield, and the Pry House Field Hospital Museum, which features a re-creation of an operating theater.
In its heyday, Chesapeake Beach was a thriving resort destination for travelers arriving by train or steamboat. But now, this bayside locale is better known as a quiet beach town ideal for relaxing getaways. Venture to Chesapeake Beach Railway Museum to learn more about the town's history, or spend some time fishing or crabbing at one of the town's marinas. Visitors can also explore the Chesapeake Bay on a kayak or pontoon boat. Meanwhile, those traveling with children will want to check out the Chesapeake Beach Water Park, which offers everything from waterslides to a lazy river to cabana rentals.
Maryland's largest freshwater lake offers endless opportunities for outdoor recreation. In summer, the weather here is warm and dry, making this season an excellent time to go fishing, swimming and kayaking. Meanwhile, winter is when the lake freezes and its shores get covered in snow, giving visitors the chance to go ice fishing, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. To avoid winter's chilly temps without rubbing elbows with hordes of summer tourists, arrive in spring or fall. These shoulder seasons are terrific times to go biking and hiking around the lake and admire Muddy Creek Falls in nearby Swallow Falls State Park.
National Harbor is home to some of Maryland's best shops, restaurants and entertainment venues, so you can expect to never feel bored when you visit. Make your way to Tanger Outlets at National Harbor for some retail therapy, listen to live music at a dueling piano bar, enjoy a bird's-eye view of Washington, D.C., while riding the Capital Wheel or catch a film during National Harbor's free outdoor summer movie series. If you're looking for a bit more excitement once the sun goes down, stop by MGM National Harbor to test Lady Luck in its casino or catch a show in its 3,000-seat theater.
Despite its gritty reputation, Baltimore is a lively city with attractions that appeal to a variety of travelers. Art lovers will want to check out the collections at the Baltimore Museum of Art and The Walters Art Museum, while sports enthusiasts should time their visits around catching a Baltimore Orioles baseball game at Oriole Park at Camden Yards or a Baltimore Ravens football game at M&T Bank Stadium. For those traveling with children, Baltimore offers all kinds of family-friendly attractions in its popular Inner Harbor neighborhood, including the National Aquarium, the Maryland Science Center and Port Discovery Children's Museum.
If you're a fan of history, make a beeline for Frederick, a western Maryland city with deep ties to the Civil War. Start your trip exploring Monocacy National Battlefield and the National Museum of Civil War Medicine, or rent a bike and follow the 10-mile Frederick History Bicycle Loop, which stops at more than 20 historical sites. When you've gotten your fill of history, head to Downtown Frederick to check out its hundreds of shops, art galleries and restaurants. The city center is also where you'll find the Public Art Trail and the Frederick Wine Trail.
Nicknamed The Grand Old Ditch, this waterway that once transported coal, agricultural products and lumber from Cumberland, Maryland to Washington, D.C.'s Georgetown neighborhood, is now a must-visit destination when visiting Maryland and our nation's capital. Inside the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park, you'll discover miles of hiking trails and a wide towpath that's suitable for biking, horseback riding and jogging. Plus, with nearly 200 miles of canal to explore, travelers can get out on the water in a kayak or canoe.

With its landscape extending from the seashore (the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean) to the mountains (the Appalachians) to urban areas (Baltimore and Annapolis), Maryland offers a wide variety of things to do. In one day, you can immerse yourself in the state's wonderful scenery and outdoor activities before visiting its museums and historic sites . From the Eastern Shore to the suburbs of Washington, D.C., here are the top places to visit in Maryland.

The largest city in the state of Maryland, Baltimore makes for a great weekend getaway . You could easily spend an entire day exploring the city's Inner Harbor , which features world-class attractions like the National Aquarium, Port Discovery, Baltimore's Historic Ships, and the Maryland Science Center. However, be sure to visit the city's other neighborhoods, including Fell's Point, listed on the National Register of Historic Districts, and Hampden for its independent shops, restaurants, and buzzing cocktail scene ( The Bluebird Cocktail Room is a must-visit).
DenisTangneyJr / Getty Images
Located on Maryland's Eastern Shore , the town of Ocean City is infused with nostalgia and good ol' Americana. Here, you'll find 10 miles of white-sand beaches, mini-golf courses, go-kart tracks, and Trimper's Rides , the world's oldest continuously family-owned-and-operated amusement park. Don't leave without hitting up the 3-mile Ocean City Boardwalk, open since 1902, for arcade games, shopping, and a spin on Jolly Roger Amusement Park 's Ferris wheel. When you get hungry, grab a cup of Thrasher's Fries or settle in at On the Bay Seafood for "heavy" blue crab.
Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historic Park
Richard T. Nowitz / Getty Images
The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal (C & O Canal) is a national historic park that dates back to the 18th and 19th centuries. The 184.5-mile towpath extends from Georgetown in Washington, D.C. to Cumberland, Maryland. Walking or bicycling along the towpath, you can view original structures including locks and aqueducts. If you're planning to do the trail all in one go, consider booking a stay at one of the seven historic lockhouses along the canal.
The state capital of Maryland has a little bit of everything: Enjoy dining on steamed crabs at Cantler's Riverside Inn , browsing boutique shops on Main Street, and touring 18th-century buildings in the city's historic district—including the Maryland State House, the country's oldest capitol building in continuous use. And because Annapolis is the sailing capital of America, consider diving into the city's nautical heritage by visiting either the Annapolis Maritime Museum or U.S. Naval Academy , then setting sail on a sightseeing cruise through the Chesapeake Bay.
Deep Creek Lake
Offering a wide selection of activities for outdoor adventures, Deep Creek Lake is one of the top getaway destinations in the state of Maryland. In the summer and fall, you can enjoy everything from hiking, cycling, and horseback riding to boating and fishing. Come winter, the area is great for skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. Located in Western Maryland’s Garrett County, you can either camp at Deep Creek Lake State Park or stay at a hotel in McHenry.
The National Harbor

The National Harbor, found just 20 minutes south of Washington, D.C. , is a 300-acre waterfront destination along the Potomac River. The $2.1 billion mixed-use community in Prince George's County, Maryland is home to hotels, restaurants, retail stores, condominiums, a full-service marina, Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center , and commercial office space. Shop, dine, and play your way around here, or get out on the water by renting a kayak, paddleboard, or pedal boat .
Historic Ellicott City
Jon Bilous / Getty Images
During the late 1700s, Ellicott Mills was the largest flour milling center in the region—and while the area closed down its last commercial grain mill in 2020, it's still imbued with historic charm. A 30-minute drive from Baltimore, this quaint town in Howard County, Maryland makes for a fun day trip. Stop by the B&O Ellicott City Station Museum , the nation's oldest standing railroad station, before browsing the town's nice selection of art galleries and antique and specialty shops. When you get hungry, settle in for pub fare at Manor Hill Tavern or Korean barbeque at Honey Pig Restaurant .
Silver Spring
KhanImranM / Getty Images
Located near Ellicott City, this Washington, D.C. suburb offers city-goers a quiet respite. Movie buffs will want to pay a visit to the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center , run by the American Film Institute. In addition to film screenings, events here include filmmaker interviews, panels, discussions, and musical performances. If the weather is nice, head to Brookside Gardens , nestled within Wheaton Regional Park. The 50-acre, award-winning garden boasts azaleas, roses, perennials, yews, maples, and a Japanese-style garden, as well as two year-round conservatories. Admission is free.

With historic sites, natural attractions, and an underrated wine scene, this Western Maryland city has something to suit every traveler. Dive into Civil War history by touring Monocacy National Battlefield , the site of the Battle of Monocacy Junction in July 1864, or perusing some 1,200 artifacts at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine . A 30-minute drive from downtown, Crystal Grottoes Caverns offers daily guided tours, whereas the 6,080-acre Cunningham Falls State Park has hiking trails and a 78-foot waterfall. For a relaxing retreat, while away an afternoon by sampling one or two of the Frederick Wine Trail's 15 wineries, including Elk Run Vineyards & Winery and Linganore Wine Cellars .
Joesboy / Getty Images
Situated on Maryland's Eastern Shore, Cambridge offers a combination of outdoor attractions and historic points of interest. Birders should make Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge their first stop; the 27,000-acre waterfowl sanctuary contains a third of the state's tidal wetlands and welcomes more than 250 species of migrating and wintering birds. To view the wildlife up close, you can opt between hiking 5 miles of trails or paddling 17 miles of waterways. Later, check out the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center , considered the gateway to the Harriet Tubman Scenic Byway . Be sure to carve out 45 to 60 minutes to fully immerse yourself in the center's permanent exhibits and film.
Assateague Island
Home to more than 300 wild ponies, the 37-mile-long barrier island of Assateague Island runs parallel along the coasts of Maryland and Virginia and features three public areas: Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge on the Virginia side, and Assateague State Park and Assateague Island National Seashore on the Maryland side. Each is worth visiting in their own right, but if you only have time to visit one, make it the latter. The national seashore offers a wide range of activities, including hiking, biking, fishing, swimming, and snapping photos of the island's beloved horses. Camping is available on the beach, but you can also find accommodation in Ocean City and Berlin, located just over 8 miles from the park.
Antietam National Battlefield
Exploder1 / Getty Images
On September 17, 1862, the Confederate Army of North Virginia invaded the North for the first time. During the 12-hour Battle of Antietam, approximately 23,000 soldiers were killed, wounded, or missing, leading President Abraham Lincoln to institute the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. You can learn more about the bloodiest battle in American military history by exploring the former battlegrounds, whose sites include the National Cemetery, Dunker Church, and Pry House Field Hospital, where Union Commander General George B. McClellan set up headquarters. There are also several hiking trails through and around the battlefield, as well as a self-guided 8.5-mile auto tour.
