Mat Kearney announces self-titled album + headlining tour; new song “Palisades” out now
Posted by Logan White | Mar 5, 2024 | Music , News , Streams , Tour Announcements | 0 |
Today, multi-platinum singer/songwriter/producer Mat Kearney has announced that he will be releasing his new, self-titled album on May 17th via Middle Kid Records. It is his first album since 2021’s January Flower .
Mat Kearney was produced by Kearney himself, with additional production coming from Micah Tawkls ( Hayley Williams , Liza Anne, COIN) and Marc Scibilia ( Breland , Robin Schultz, Teddy Swims). Along with the album news, he has released the captivating and buoyant new single “Palisades.”
Produced by Kearney and Tawkls and featuring The Brook and the Bluff as his backing band, Kearney had this to share about the song, “Someone once told me as a young musician ‘enjoy it now cause you can only start a journey once.’ I look back at some pinnacle moments and realize they were lost on me at the time. That feeling of leaving home and being in the middle of a highlight reel, is what ‘Palisades’ sounds like to me where the journey is the destination.”
Listen to “Palisades” below and pre-order Mat Kearney here .
“Palisades” is the third single to be released ahead of his self-titled new studio album, following “Headlights Home” – which was released in January accompanied by an official music video – watch here – and “Good Thing Going On” released in February with an official visualizer, watch here .
Written and recorded over the past couple of years with the help of some talented friends, Kearney counts this new album as one of his most personal releases and sees it as a reflection of his two-decade long career.
“It’s time I let you in on the secret of what I’ve been working on for the last 2 years. My self-titled ‘Mat Kearney’ record is coming out May 17th. I got a text from my long-time band member Phil Moore saying, ‘this record feels the most like the guy I’ve been hanging out with for the last 10 years.’ I think that sums it up. I wanted to make something honest, warm, raw, that felt like a big hug, the soundtrack for a drive into mountains, and beach hang with friends. I spread my wings and took on more of the production. Some songs I did start to finish alone. I also collaborated in ways I haven’t before. My favorite Nashville band The Brook and The Bluff played on a handful of songs. It was the first time I felt like I was in a band. I tried to keep it simple. Real instruments and honest performances, like how I started out. I keep playing this record in my car which isn’t normal for me once I complete a project. I hope that’s a good sign and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Love, Mat”

After his new found Christian faith saved him from the downward spiral he found himself in during college, Mat Kearney began to channel his beliefs into his music with popular results.
Born in Oregon and accidentally dubbed Mathew rather than Matthew after a mistake was made on his birth certificate (something he didn’t realize until 8th grade), a trip to Nashville first sparked Mat’s interest in music. After getting out of a rough patch in college, Mat began developing his own fusion of acoustic music with spoken word and rapped vocals, testing it out at coffee shops in the area.
After meeting producer Robert Marvin and agreeing to help him move house to Nashville, Mat began to record demos with Robert and realized he’d found a new home. With Nashville as his new hometown Mat pressed forward and released his debut album ‘Nothing Left to Lose’ in 2006 and whilst it was a slow builder, the album has now sold over 450000 copies with many of its songs appearing in popular TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy and Scrubs.
His next two albums, ‘City of Black and White’ and ‘Young Love’ capitalized on his new found success and were chart successes, both topping the Christian charts and placing at 13th and 4th respectively. Even after TV appearances and shows all over the US (even one in a plane), he still remains humble about his success saying "It still feels surreal every night. I'm so grateful and honored to be doing what I'm doing".
Live reviews
I have been a fan of Mat Kearney since the beginning of my freshman year in high school, 2012. I was really into John Mayer and music of that type, so he would occasionally come on my Pandora stations. I loved his stuff, and became really into him ever since.
He basically got me through my freshman year: what was full of failed friendships, bad grades, and all the struggle and depression I felt. It used to be that I would walk home from the bus stop and bump to him the entire time just to distract me from all the noise. He was everything to me.
Ever since, he's always been my go-to for music listening. I've never found a combination of all the things I love like I have in Mat: he is an incredible songwriter and musician. He takes insane beats and spits crazy rhymes and lyrics effortlessly.
When the opportunity finally presented itself after 3 years to see him in NYC, I bought the tickets immediately and counted down the days until I saw my hero. When the day finally came, the line was around the block, but I knew that I would be able to get close. I had to.
I ended up being third row and I've never been to a better concert. Ever. He sounded exactly like he does on all his records. He is an incredible performer: not only does his presence command the stage, but he has a great relationship with his counterparts onstage and in the audience. I yelled up to him that it was my friend's birthday who I brought with me, and he immediately responded with "it's your birthday? Happy birthday! What's your name?" This is just a testament to how incredible he is.
What I truly loved about my concert was seeing all my favorite songs coming to life. It was so awesome seeing all the aspects of his music being satisfied and which instruments/technology helped to bring them to life: I loved how in Just Kids, he brought out this device that played all the sounds in the beginning. It really showed me how incredible of an artist he is, and how far he is willing to go to create content that no one else is putting out there.
All in all, I have never been so happy. It was the best night of my life, because Mat Kearney is definitely one in a "billion".

I saw Mat Kearney at Almost Acoustic Christmas in 2011 in Fort Myers, Florida, and in January, 2012 at the Ritz Ybor in Ybor City, Florida. Mat Kearney’s blend of acoustic guitar mixed with soulful rapping creates a unique concert experience. Mat’s phenomenal stage presence will have you feeling the emotions of his lyrics throughout the performance. He engages with the audience in an intimate way so that you feel he is singing directly to you.
The variety of his songs will have you dancing, clapping, smiling, and possibly even tearing up. From his slower, more emotional songs like "Breathe In Breathe Out," to his more upbeat songs like "Hey Mama," you will hear a diverse range of music. He makes sure to play his hits including "Closer to Love," "Nothing Left to Lose," and "Ships In The Night." His beautiful melodies will be playing in your head for days after the concert. His inspiring lyrics will have you leaving the concert feeling positive and refreshed.
One of the highlights of one of the concerts I attended was an onstage dance party with the fans during Mat’s encore. A few girls jumped onstage from the crowd and started dancing with Mat, and instead of getting security to kick them off the stage as some artists would do, he started pulling more fans up onstage, my sister and friend included! It was an awesome way to end the show. Mat has a unique connection with his fans that you will be sure to experience at his live show.
Mat Kearney, a singer/songwriter who has the ability to captivate an entire room and audience with his expert combination of emotive guitar and husky vocal. His stage setup is intentionally bare as he allows the music to take the centre and the audience appreciate this level of sincerity.
There is a real feeling of vulnerability when Mat Kearney performs live as he seems to bare all during the emotive renditions of 'Count on Me' and 'Fire & Rain'. There are big cheers for older single 'All I Need' so clearly Kearney's dedicated fans are out in force tonight. Despite having achieving commerciality in his last few releases, the singer seems to perform in the same way as when he was starting out on the circuit.
First single 'Nothing Left To Lose' was dropped effortlessly in the middle of the set and it gained a large cheer but the audience seem to be there to see the whole show as opposed to the breakout hit. He chooses a tender cover of Bruce Springsteen's 'Dancing In The Dark' to close an ambient and touching live performance.
One of my Top 5 for 2018 (and I've seen over 50 bands this year).
I'm following Mat's radio channel on Spotify as I type, we love the same music!
One of the rare concerts this year without F-bombs. A pleasure since this word is overused by many artists to rev up the audience. We were rev'd up by the performance. Thanks.
Tight show, great sound system in the venue (House of Blues SD). The sound and view is best from the balcony, but the camera/video feed is in dire need of updating.
Amazing concert! Mat Kearney has such an amazing voice especially live! He’s interactive and friendly making the concert all the more fun! Definitely would see him again if I got the chance! His set is very simple making it more about the music than about the spectacle which I loved especially since his music is so heartfelt and personal.
Another excellent performance by Mat Kearney! This is the third time I've seen him in Baltimore and he always delivers a great show. Parachute opened the show and teamed up with Mat Kearney to close out the show with a cover of The Boss "Dancing in The Dark". Overall this was an excellent night of music!!
Mat was truly a delight to see perform in person. He started out a bit rusty (maybe it was the green chili) but after a few songs he had the audience eating out of his hand. It made a great date night for my wife and IHF has been approved by I. I hope he makes it to ABQ again!
Mat delivered another awesome show. He played all the old favorites with a few new songs from the Just Kids album woven in. It's great to see his success as he is moving up and selling out bigger venues yet he still retains his humble personality on stage.
Mat kearney is an amazing performer.
I enjoyed his light hearted attitude and deep rooted music. He was fun and his band members were also great. I would defenitely go see him again.

Attendees enjoy a summer concert at the Meijer Gardens outdoor amphitheater in July 2023. Provided by Meijer Gardens

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — The long-awaited lineup for the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park’s 2024 summer concert series has dropped.
The annual summer concert series, spanning from early June through mid-August, will feature 33 unique concerts at the venue’s outdoor amphitheater.
The outdoor amphitheater at Meijer Gardens, 1000 East Beltline Ave. NE in Grand Rapids, has terraced lawn seating for 1,900 people.
“We are delighted to present another summer of world-class live music in the Frederik Meijer Gardens Amphitheater,” said Charles Burke, Meijer Gardens president and CEO.
“We’re extremely thankful to the entire Meijer family, Fifth Third Bank, Harvey Lexus of Grand Rapids, Corewell Health, Grand Rapids Symphony, the Steve and Amy Van Andel Foundation, and all our partners for their commitment in helping make this series possible and allowing us to welcome more people to experience the arts at Meijer Gardens.”
Based upon ticket prices, the most highly anticipated performances in the lineup are for Boyz II Men, Bonnie Raitt with James Hunter, and Jason Mraz.
Boyz II Men will perform at Meijer Gardens on Sunday, July 28, and tickets cost $130 presale and $135 for the general public. The second priciest concert on the list is Bonnie Raitt with James Hunter, who will perform on Wednesday, June 26. Tickets to see Raitt cost $99 presale and $104 for the general public.

Jason Mraz rounds out the top three most expensive concerts, with $95 presale and $100 general public tickets for his Wednesday, July 17 performance.
Tickets go on sale for all 33 concerts for Meijer Gardens members at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 20. The members-only presale runs through 9 p.m. Friday, April 26, but several of the most anticipated performances will likely sell out quickly.
Last year, 20 out of the 30 concerts in the 2023 lineup sold out on the first day of members-only ticket sales.
Public ticket sales to non-members begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 27. There is a limit of six tickets per show.
Tickets will be available for purchase online at AXS.com . On top of the ticket prices, which vary per performer, a $10 per ticket fee and a 3% credit card fee is added per order. After purchase, tickets can be managed via the AXS mobile app. There will be a $15 processing fee for those who want their tickets mailed to them and a $6 processing fee for those who choose Will Call as their delivery method.

This is a different ticketing website than the one Meijer Gardens used last year, which charged a flat $15 processing fee per order.
The ticketing system change comes after some Meijer Gardens members complained last year that they were unable to get tickets for the most popular performances after long waits on the ticketing system. Meijer Gardens later issued an apology for the ticketing issues its members experienced.
