You will start your first classes at Sunzal Point, a beginners break. Each day you will have classes for 1,5 to 3 hours with a bilingual surf instructor and surf boards included. With this program you will also visit the beautiful waterfalls of Taminique. This little town is located not far from the beach and close to the waterfall you will already see small waterfalls, rapids and pools with crystal clear water. At the main waterfall you will be able to swim for a refreshing dip.
You will also visit the Volcano of San Salvador. The Volcano of San Salvador is stratovolcano. Any major eruption would cause a catastrophic destruction. Fortunately, the volcano remains quiet and activity is closely monitored. The volcano is a true icon of the city. This program also includes breakfast. On the final day you will have a transfer from the hotel to the airport.
Unfortunately, your surfing holiday in El Salvador ends today. Your driver will take you to the international airport for your flight back home.

Had a great trip and learnt a lot. This was the perfect setup of you are in it for the surf and wants to spend the rest of the time on your in terms instead of with a group. Luis was a great instructor!
We head a great time with Alejandro! Not even only the surfing, he helped us with so many things in advance like getting a cap from the airport for a fair price (he called the agency to ask for the local price a day before our arrival..), called Hostels for us etc. From second 1 we had the feeling of heaving a local friend here who helps us how to get along, how to take local buses and so on. We are really glad that we’ve met Alejandro and Luis. A FULL recommendation for Maya Tours!!!
I “met” Alejandro on a surf forum and he was the sole reason why I came to El Salvador. I was going to go back to Nica but he suggested El Sunzal. And I love it here. He took me on an amazing surf excursion to local spots even regulars hasn’t heard of. I really enjoyed it and he’s a reliable and awesome guy!

Why Do People Come to Surf Camps in El Salvador?
Going on a surf trip on some sunny beach in Central America is one of the best things a surfer can do for himself. There is no greater joy than leaving everyday life and dedicating a week or two to something you love. However, planning a surf trip can be quite a hassle, especially when you lack the necessary local knowledge. Tasks like booking hotels, finding restaurants, and knowing which surf spots to go to can be pretty exhausting.
This is exactly where a surf camp kicks in. By booking a surf camp in El Salvador, you basically take the annoying part out of the equation and focus only on the fun part. While the camp will take care of transportation, accommodation, meals, equipment, and surf lessons, you can simply enjoy your vacation time. In addition, surf camps in El Salvador are a great way to meet new surfers from all over the world.
What is the Cost of a Surf Camp in El Salvador?
When booking a surf camp in El Salvador, the cost should play a significant part in your decision. Luckily, you will find a great variety of camps and packages to suit any budget here. In fact, most of the surf camps in El Salvador offer great value for your money. What determines the cost of a surf camp are factors like the quality of the accommodation, number of days, number of surf lessons per day, seasonality, and additional services. Therefore, depending on your budget, you can customize the package that suits you best. In most cases, booking a surf camp in El Salvador will actually cost you less than it would be if you booked all services on your own. As for the numbers, a one-week package in a surf camp in El Salvador should cost somewhere between $300 to $1300.
Are Surf Camps in El Salvador Suitable for Beginners?
El Salvador offers a great variety of surf spots with waves that suit all skill levels. For instance, the waves in spots like Punta Roca can be extremely powerful, but in spots like El Tunco, you will find softer waves and a great environment for surfing lessons. Therefore, surfers of all skill levels can attend a surf camp in El Salvador. Moreover, the instructors in all the surf camps in El Salvador know exactly where to take their students in order to keep them safe and help them practice in waves that are suitable for their skills.
What Time of the Year is Best for a Surf Camp in El Salvador?
The coastline of El Salvador receives swells all year long. However, some months offer better surf and weather conditions than others due to heavy rains and swell consistency. For instance, between May and October, you can expect some massive and consistent waves, but this is also the rainy season. In contrast, from November to April, the sky is clear, and the sun always shines, but the waves are smaller.
To sum up, any time is a good time for a surf camp in El Salvador, just decide if you prefer bigger waves or nicer weather.
Which Location in El Salvador is Best for a Surf Camp?
Although there are many good surf beaches in El Salvador, these are the most recommended ones for a surf camp:
1. El Tunco- A world-class point break in the deep water and a beginner break just next to shore.
2. El Zonte- Magical town with consistent waves year round.
3. Punta Mango- An incredible surf spot for advanced surfers.
Essential Things You Should Check Before Choosing a Surf Camp in El Salvador
Before choosing a surf camp in El Salvador, it is crucial to understand exactly what the camp provides, so don’t forget to check the following:
1. What is the student-to-instructor ratio during the surf lessons? In general, the smaller the group is, the more personal guidance you will get from the instructor. Therefore, look for a ratio of 5 to 1 or less.
2. Are surfboard rentals provided by the camp, or should you bring your own surfboard? Also, can you use the camp’s equipment for practice on your own?
3. Are airport transfers included, or should you get there on your own? What about transfers to different surf spots during the camp?
4. Is the package all-inclusive, or should you pay for meals? If it is all-inclusive, which meals are included and which are not?
5. How many surf lessons are included in the package each day? Is there a precise schedule?
6. What type of accommodations will you be staying at? Is it a private room or a dorm? How many people will you be sharing the room with?
7. Does the coaching program suit your skill level? Is there a separation between beginners and advanced surfers during the sessions?
8. Which qualifications do the surf instructors have? Are they certified? Remember, your safety is above everything.
9. Which coaching tools will be used during the camp? Is there a theoretical part? Video analysis? Enough practice time?
10. Are there any add-ons or additional services you should know about, or does the initial price cover everything?
How to Book a Surf Camp in El Salvador?
Once you choose your preferred surf camp in El Salvador, booking it is pretty easy, as everything is available online. The main question, though, should be what type of surf camp are you looking for, and these are the two main options:
1. If you are a beginner or an intermediate surfer looking for a coaching program, the best website to book your surf camp is www.booksurfcamps.com . This is where you can get the most reliable information about the surf instructors, weekly schedule, and general guidance.
2. If you are an experienced surfer and you only need a place to stay close to the waves, you can simply book your stay on www.booking.com .
Both websites are trusted and user-friendly, so you can feel comfortable using them for booking your surf camp in El Salvador.
Conclusion- Final Thought
To sum up, these are the top surf camps in El Salvador. In reality, it doesn’t really matter which one of them you choose, as they are all good and offer pretty much the same. What’s most important is your attitude. If you come open-minded to learn, practice, and make the best of it, you can improve your surfing drastically, meet great people, and have lots of fun.

El Salvador Surf Camp – Central America’s Hidden Gems
Home » Travel » El Salvador Surf Camp – Central America’s Hidden Gems
Zoltan Tamas
- Last Updated On: 16 August, 2023
El Salvador, with its pristine beaches and rolling waves, has always been a surfer’s paradise. But the rise of all-inclusive yet affordable surf trips has made this Central American haven even more enticing. In El Salvador, surf camps are getting more popular. We found two interesting ones that we want to share with you.
One of them is Barebones Surf , which ensures that the sport of surfing is accessible and enjoyable to all. If you want to book it, then you might need to be strategic, as (at the time of writing) only two timeslots are available. One is in November and one is in December. Jose “Bamba” Diaz’s camp is only 5 days and it costs £756.
The other option is Maya Surf Tours , which is open almost all year. They can take you to the best spots near Playa El Sunzal. They seem to be a bit more pricey, right now is £929 for a 7 days/6 nights camp. They speak English, German and of course Spanish. The program says each of the 5 days you will be able to surf for 1.5 hours.
In this article, we will write a bit more about Barebones Surf.
Let’s get started.
El Salvador Surf Camp – A Calling from El Tunco
Located in El Tunco, a coastal town in El Salvador, Barebones Surf has managed to curate an unparalleled surfing experience. This isn’t another surf trip; it’s an immersive dive into the world of waves. Tailored especially for those at an intermediate skill level. The trip’s exclusivity ensures limiting it to a maximum of ten participants. Guaranteeing personalized coaching in the heart of El Salvador’s surf mecca.
Barebones Surf: Making Waves with Authenticity
In today’s commercialized travel world, Barebones Surf is a breath of fresh ocean air. They have made affordability their mission, but not at the expense of a full experience. Partnering with local communities, they ensure that every trip is as authentic as it gets. Every surf session brings with it a lesson in culture, a taste of the local lifestyle, and a contribution back to the community that calls El Tunco home.
Stay, Eat, Surf at Casa Makoi
When it comes to accommodation, Barebones Surf has partnered with Casa Makoi. They are offering guests a stay that is as memorable as their surf sessions. This exclusive place is steps away from the beach, so you can hear the sound of waves even in your room. There is two option you can choose from: the shared rooms available for 4 people, which comes with modern amenities. Or if you prefer the private rooms they are also available upon request, on a first come first serve basis. And of course, there’s Chef Pedro. His expertise promises to buzz your taste buds every morning and during the two group dinners. Oh, and did we mention Pepe? The resident watchdog at Casa Makoi will steal your heart with his antics. Safety, both from Pepe and the vigilant 24/7 staff, ensures peace of mind throughout your stay.
Ride the Waves: A Program Tailored to Perfection
Before you even step onto El Salvadorian soil, Barebones Surf ensures you’re in top form. They want to do this with an 8-week surf conditioning program, which comes with a nutrition guide. Once in El Tunco, each day unfolds a new adventure. From dawn, participants are getting ready for the surf sessions. The experts will keep an eye on you, record your surf session and then give you an in-depth video analysis. And once you take a break from surfing, there are plenty of things to do. Visiting waterfalls, getting a massage or vibing to the rhythmic beats of local music.
Learn from the Legend: Jose ‘Bamba’ Diaz
Barebones Surf isn’t about just riding the waves; it’s about mastering them. And who better to guide you than the legendary Jose ‘Bamba’ Diaz? Bamba is the President of the Salvadorian Surfing Federation and an ISA-certified coach. His insights are invaluable. His experience brings depth to the coaching that’s hard to find elsewhere.
El Salvador Surf Camp in El Tunco: Beyond the Waves
El Tunco is more than just a surf destination. It’s a vibrant town buzzing with energy. Casa Makoi stands right in the heart of it, with its pizza shop being a testament to the town’s culinary delights. And for those keen on exploring the iconic Sunzal wave is just one of the many surfing spots awaiting discovery.
A Gastronomic Affair
Each day at Casa Makoi begins with a hearty breakfast, ensuring you’re fueled for the waves. And with options ranging from vegetarian and vegan to seafood, every meal is a delightful surprise. Special dietary requests? They’ve got you covered.
Safety First
During Covid, Barebones Surf has made health and hygiene their priority. They sanitized the accommodations and maintained safe distances during outdoor activities. It looks like they put every measure in place to ensure your safety.
El Salvador Surf Camp – Wrapping Up
As the sun sets on your 5-day surf adventure, it’s hard not to reminisce about the waves conquered, the friends made, and the culture imbibed. Barebones Surf’s commitment to authenticity, affordability, and community, ensures that your surf trip to El Tunco isn’t like another holiday. This is an experience of a lifetime. So, pack those boards and let the waves beckon!

El Salvador might not be the first place you think of when you think about the ultimate surfing destination, but it should be!
Here, we have given you our top picks across a whole range of preferences, whether you want a low-key surfing experience, or to enjoy the height of luxury after you cruise the waves.
Below is a list of the best luxury resorts that El Salvador has to offer.
Luxury Surf Resorts
Las flores resort surf club.
Located in the stunning Playa Las Flores, the Las Flores Resort has unmitigated access to some of the best surf in the country. As a location, Playa Las Flores is a great spot to hone your skills and learn from some of the best instructors in world class surroundings.
Take your board down directly to the beach, a mere minute’s walk from your doorstep down to the sea.
In terms of surf, you can expect the unique sand-bottomed point break beach which offers surfers the best of both long peeling point break waves and a forgiving sand bottomed breaker.
This makes it ideal for surfers who are starting out or want to spend time upping their game whilst still experiencing mega world-class waves.
These long waves mean that even novices can experience the joy of riding 50 to 100-yard waves, increasing your learning and ability to handle longer board rides.
You can hire surfboards and gear here easily in a range of lengths and sizes and you’ll have expert advice on hand so you can be fitted to the right one.
The balmy El Salvadorian weather does away with the need for wetsuits, but don’t forget that all-important sun protection!
In terms of the resort itself, the Las Flores is a luxury boutique resort with tonnes of opportunities to play around when you are in between surfs. Hotel Facilities include hot tubs, pool, sundeck, landscaped gardens, ocean views from your very own yoga deck, not to mention the signature Spa.
Las Flores Resort also offers off-site tours so you can make the most of your stay and experience what Eastern El Salvador has to offer.
One Wave Surf House
If you are looking for a safe and secure place to chill out after a deluxe day surfing with friends, why not take a look at the gorgeous One Wave Surf House This amazing house offers you boutique luxury in the comfort of your own space. You can hire the whole villa out for up to ten people or book a private room in the shared villa.
You’ll have access to on-demand help and support from top surfers and is open to surfers of all abilities, with a plan tailor-made to suit your needs. You have the opportunity to surf twice a day on top-quality surfboards and optional reviews and photos.
There are options to take yoga classes on the generous top deck balcony yoga studio and access to the exclusive staff who are available to book in for deep tissue or Swedish massages and cooking and cleaning.
Built in a private gated community, this villa is as safe and secure as they come, offering you a slice of home and true peace of mind if you want a real hands-off luxury escape.
Hotel Alma Azul
Much more affordable whilst still providing gorgeous luxe vibes, Hotel Alma Azul is the best of both worlds. Nestled in the popular surf spot of Playa Las Flores you have access to the finest point break surf.
There is no wifi in the bedroom and no TVs. This is a place to digitally detox and experience the moment.
You can walk directly off your hotel deck and pick fresh mangoes, listen to the birds and watch the stars appear in the clear night sky. In terms of surf, they offer a great selection of surf lessons for both beginners and intermediate surfers. You are 100 meters away from the nearest wave, so surf can be the first thing you do as you open your eyes in a tropical paradise.
This is the perfect place to base yourself as you explore El Salvador’s coast and drink in the rich culture and history.
AST Adventures Punta Roca
This boutique resort is in a prime location to enjoy the stunning Punta Roca waves. Look out of your window and see the beach right below.
You can walk directly from the hotel to the beach via a boardwalk, with access to top-quality surfing equipment to play with.
You’ll have access to top-speed internet, private bathrooms, TVs, and AC so you can enjoy all the luxuries of home.
There are options for ocean dining at night, access to a large private pool, and of course to professional surf guides who can coach you, making sure you get the most out of your surfing break.
The rooms are all premium suites with daily cleaning and you’ll have access to the resort’s two exclusive restaurants serving local fish and a view of the setting sun.
As expected for a luxe resort, there are additional options for yoga classes and wellness retreats where you can indulge in a massage after a day’s surf.
The resort is also just a stone’s throw from the local fish markets in town at La Libertad, or you can venture out to El Tunco for some nightlife as well as nearby Sunzal and Mizata to explore the local history and culture on your doorstep.
The resort will also arrange for a private pickup from the international San Salvador Airport 30 minutes away upon request.
If you’re not one for all the bells and whistles of a luxury resort and would rather stick to the basics, take a peek at our selection of great surf camps in El Salvador.
Maya Surf Tours
With the focus purely on the surf, Maya Surf Tours can offer you tailor-made surf lessons and coaching to improve your skills amongst the Central American waves.
Based in La Libertad, Maya Surf School is close to the international airport and has excellent waves that are great for all surf levels.
This surf school focuses on both beginner and intermediate surfers and has a plethora of extras such as transportation services, lodging, and boat rides.
The program is based on four principles- discovery, development, support, and autonomy where you have the opportunity to build up your confidence through learning the skills and principles of surfing.
There are other activities available on the rare occasion that surf is flat, and it’s all heavily based on exploring El Salvadorian culture and history, perfect if you want to really get a feel of the place and be guided by the local community with an emphasis on sustainability and agriculture.
The Surf House, Playa El Tunco
Playa El Tunco is the destination to go to if you want to meet like-minded surfers who love to travel as much as you do. This vibrant town is choc-full of touristy things to do, has a rich history and is very friendly to surfers and backpackers.
If you are a young surfer looking to make new like-minded friends and discover the waves together, this surf house and surf camp could be the perfect thing. Think late-night bonfires, drinks with new friends, and low, low hostel prices.
The rooms are basic, but you have a lot of communal space to swim, enjoy the gardens and of course lots of on-site surfing with access to rentals for boards and instructors on hand to book time with.
Salty Souls
Each year, Salty Souls holds an 8-day experience for women looking to learn to surf, embrace yoga and self-empowerment. These range between El Salvador, Indonesia, and Ecuador, though bookings go fast.
If you are looking for an opportunity to have 1-1 training with a surfing professional whilst building your mental and physical strength over the course of a week, Salty Souls may be just the ticket on your path to self-discovery.
Located in a safe and secure quiet beach town of El Zante, this surf camp is specifically for women and preferably those on a solo adventure looking to expand their minds and embrace the open waves.
Los Mangos Hotel
Overlooking the world-renowned Punta Mango beach, Los Mangos Hotel was built in 2014 by Epic Adventures Surfing to provide a boutique hotel experience that’s main focus was a great surf camp.
With an amazing rock beach and plenty of places to explore nearby, this is a great place to stay if you want private accommodation whilst still focussing on a good well-rounded surf camp.
They offer surf breaks and packages, or you can simply get cracking and explore the water yourself, as it’s only a few yards from the door of your accommodation to the best waves in El Salvador.
El Zonte Surf Camp
This is an all-inclusive surf camp package providing accommodation in a shared surf house or the option of a private villa, both just steps away from the surf.
The package is the perfect option if you want a stress-free holiday that’s focused on surfing and having hands-on help from professionals at your side whilst being surrounded by like-minded people.
The package includes 7-night accommodation, 6 days of 4-hour lessons with qualified instructors at the surf school, airport transfers, surfboard rental, most of your meals throughout your trip, an 8-hour volcano tour hike, and a big party night out in the capital city of San Salvador.
A great choice if you want it all built into your holiday!
Travel In El Salvador
There are a couple of things to be aware of when traveling around El Salvador. Though a lot of these issues rarely affect tourists, it is probably a good idea to have your wits about you and not take any chances if traveling alone.
El Salvador has the highest crime rate in Central America, whilst it is still an amazing place to visit and has some of the most welcoming and generous people in the world, don’t become a target of petty theft and keep valuables hidden when out and about. The crime rate is down to violence between government and gangs, so tourists are not targets at all.
El Salvador trips are usually trouble-free, but just be sure to behave sensibly, as you would in many other big cities or unfamiliar areas. Though the crime rate is high, this affects locals and communities but does not affect tourists and travelers, especially if you stay in safer zones and travel in secure tourist spots.
The rainy season in El Salvador runs from June until November, with extreme weather conditions, monsoons, and tropical depressions. Much like hurricane season in the Caribbean, which runs during the same period of time, it’s definitely best to avoid traveling to El Salvador during this period of time.
The currency used in El Salvador is USD and Bitcoin is also an official currency, though ensure you know the risks and processes involved before you go if planning on using Bitcoin.
Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the sand like in el salvador.
It’s an important thing to note that the beaches in El Salvador are a little different from those you’d find in the Caribean or other surf havens. The sands are made from limestone which can prove slippery, so be sure to watch your step, maybe a little more than usual as you’re coming out of the waves.
What Are Some Of The Must-Visit Locations In El Salvador?

Is El Salvador A Good Place To Surf?
Yes! In fact, it’s one of the best in the world for surfing. El Salvador even hosted the 2021 Surf City ALAS Pro Tour Surf Championship.
With many amazing tourist locations to visit and welcoming local communities to learn from, El Salvador is a buzzing and vibrant tourist destination for surfers that hasn’t quite been completely enveloped by worldwide tourism yet, allowing you to still enjoy unspoiled beaches and amazing surf.
Is El Salvador A Safe Place To Travel To For Tourists?
Yes, it is, whilst it may have a suspicious reputation, El Salvador is safe to travel for tourists. Just be sensible, as you would in any major city, with displaying valuables, and be sure to practice common sense.
Listen to locals, as they will make you feel welcome and know what places are unsafe to travel through, and do some forward planning for your trip so you can ensure you make the most of El Salvador on your surfing adventures. This underrated destination is the perfect combination of culture, history, perfect surf, and luxury.
Final Thoughts
El Salvadore is the perfect destination if you want to explore a unique culture that’s not yet choc-full of tourists quite yet. The weather is warm, the air clear and the surf impeccable. We hope this has given you some more ideas for your next surfing vacation and some ways you can make the most of your time in El Salvador.
