ISKCON at Mayapur, Weekend Trip from Kolkata (2024)

Experience spiritual enlightenment and serenity at ISKCON Mayapur, the heart of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. Discover a sacred haven nestled in the serene landscapes of Mayapur, where devotees and visitors immerse themselves in devotion, meditation, and timeless teachings.

One of the most captivating destinations I’ve explored is the ISKCON temple at Mayapur. The ambience and atmosphere of this sacred site defy description; it’s an experience that must be felt to be truly understood. During my visit a few years back, I encountered devotees from across the globe, predominantly Westerners, adding to the diverse and vibrant energy of the place. The soul-stirring aarti ceremony at the temple seemed to transport everyone to a realm beyond ordinary existence.

About Mayapur

Once called Miyapur, Mayapur sits at the meeting point of the Jalangi and the Bhagirathi rivers. It holds deep spiritual significance as the birthplace of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, embodying his profound teachings.

Originally named Miyapur, a settlement primarily occupied by Muslim fishermen, the area transformed in the 20th century and became known as Mayapur.

For an optimal visit to Mayapur, plan your trip during the winter months, from November to February, when the weather is delightful. However, brace yourself for sizable crowds as devotees from around the globe flock to Mayapur during this time. It’s remarkably advisable to avoid visiting during the Navadwipa Mandala Parikrama , as numerous devotees commence their religious pilgrimage from Mayapur, leading to heightened activity and congestion.

How to Get to Mayapur?

Mayapur, situated approximately 130 kilometres north of Kolkata, is reachable by road in about a four-hour journey. The route entails traversing toll roads and includes a ferry ride.

Opting for an outstation taxi from Kolkata for a round trip, typically priced at INR 8000, allows for a convenient day trip to explore Mayapur. Additionally, with its proximity to Kolkata , Mayapur is an ideal destination for a refreshing weekend getaway.

By Public Transport

  • Bus – Regular buses operated by the West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC) connect Madhyamgram Chowrasta in Kolkata to Mayapur. The journey typically spans about 4 hours, with a one-way fare under INR 50.
  • Train – For travellers opting for rail transport, Krishnagar City Junction is the nearest railway station to Mayapur, approximately 18 kilometres from the temple. A taxi ride from the station to Mayapur usually costs around INR 500 for a one-way trip. For the latest train schedules and bookings, refer to the IRCTC website.

About ISKCON at Mayapur

ISKCON Mayapur is one of India’s most sacred sites, drawing countless pilgrims and devotees. At its heart lies the majestic Chandrodaya Temple, a revered sanctuary dedicated to worshipping Pancatattva, Lord Nrisingha Dev, Srila Prabhupada, and Radha-Madhav alongside other gopis.

Notably, the Chandrodaya Temple is the inaugural shrine established by ISKCON, symbolizing the profound spiritual legacy of the organization.

The temple welcomes visitors every day from 9 AM to 7 PM. For an enriching experience, planning your visit in the serene morning hours or during the captivating evening aarti ceremony is advisable.

Mayapur holds profound significance among Vaishnavites, followers devoted to Lord Vishnu, as it is believed to be the birthplace of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in 1486 AD, an incarnation of Lord Krishna, who is considered an avatar of Lord Vishnu. According to local and religious lore, Lord Krishna manifested as Chaitanya Mahaprabhu alongside his brother Balarama as Nityananda Prabhu, descending to this earthly realm during the Kaliyuga era to impart divine teachings from the Bhagavad Gita and the Shrimad Bhagavata Purana to uplift humanity.

The temple complex spans 425,000 square feet, towering 340 feet tall. Surrounding the sacred shrine are various amenities, including lodges, residences, shops, educational centres, and lush gardens, creating a serene and vibrant atmosphere. Additionally, the complex boasts a planetarium showcasing Vedic cosmology, with exhibits delving into the rich tapestry of Vedic arts, sciences, and culture as elucidated in the Srimad Bhagavata Purana .

Where to Stay at Mayapur?

Mayapur offers a variety of accommodation options catering to the needs of visitors. From hotels to guesthouses, these establishments provide basic amenities and ensure a comfortable stay for devotees. The recommended choices are Hotel Sonar Bangla Mayapur and Nidhivan Residency , which offer quality accommodations for a pleasant vacation.

Closing Notes

My trip to Mayapur left a lasting impression, marking it as one of the most exquisite religious destinations I’ve encountered in India. I strongly advocate setting aside at least a day for a tour from Kolkata to experience its spiritual allure firsthand. For those profoundly inclined towards religion, consider extending your stay for one or two nights to immerse yourself in the divine ambience fully.
