There's an Island in South Carolina With 4,000 Wild Monkeys

You can only see the monkeys as you pass by the island from a boat.

monkey trip

As far as unique destinations go few places have Morgan Island beat.

Tucked away in the St. Helena Sound, off the coast of Beaufort, South Carolina sits Morgan Island. It's made up of more than 2,000 acres of pristine land, but don't get your hopes up of lounging on the sand. Because this island strictly belongs to the monkeys. More than 4,000 of them to be exact.

How on earth did a colony of monkeys make it to an island off the coast of South Carolina, you ask?

As Greenville Business Magazine explained, in the summer of 1979, 1,400 rhesus monkeys were placed on the island to use as research animals. Since then, their population has boomed to about 4,000.

It was all part of a plan by the U.S. government to establish a "self-sufficient breeding program" after India banned the export of viable research animals, the magazine reported. And Morgan Island was the perfect home.

Now, CHS Today reported, Morgan Island is both owned and managed by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, and the monkey colony itself is owned by the National Institute of Allergy + Infectious Diseases. This means humans aren't allowed on the island as they may disturb the population — it's illegal to even try to access the land. However, that doesn't mean you can't see them at all.

Visitors are still welcome to take a boat trip around the island and cruise the coast to spot a monkey or two hanging out in the distance. To make this visit even easier, try visiting nearby Edisto Island and launch your boat or kayak journey from there, where the tides are weaker and the journey is shorter. Just remember: The island is theirs, not yours. So keep your distance and enjoy this unique destination from just the right spot.

Best All-Inclusives for Hanging Out With Monkeys

All inclusive resorts with monkeys

Wondering where to hang out with monkeys in the Caribbean? These all-inclusive resorts are all in prime primate territory…

Hotel Xcaret – Riviera Maya

Hotel Xcaret

Iberostar Tucán, Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Howler monkeys live at Iberostar Tucan

Up the coast from Occidental at Xcaret is the Iberostar Tucán, which has its very own rainforest refuge. During a walk through the on-site reserve you might pass a turtle or two and stumble across a royal palm turkey. You’re also likely to spot howler monkeys (see image above), who live here year-round. If you’re extra lucky, you might see them out with their babies. And if you’re wondering what’s making that strange noise outside your balcony, well, howler monkeys weren’t named for their discreet social interactions.

Grand Bahia Principe Tulum, Tulum, Mexico

Looking for monkeys at Grand Bahia Principe Tulum

The Grand Bahia Principe Tulum is the perfect place for mixing classic all-inclusive relaxation with cultural excursions ( the Yucatán Peninsula is a great place for history buffs ) and wildlife encounters. It’s one of the best all-inclusives in the Caribbean for swimming with dolphins , and it’s also within easy reach of prime monkey territory. From the resort you can set off to the Sian Ka’an biosphere reserve on a jeep safari in hope of spotting wild howler and spider monkeys. The Grand Bahia Principe Tulum is also the closest all-inclusive resort to the acclaimed The Jungle Place, which is just 20 minutes away. This sanctuary takes care of endangered spider monkeys who have fallen victim to the illegal pet trade, poaching and habitat destruction. Make sure you book in advance.

Sugar Cane Club Hotel & Spa, Barbados

Green monkey in Barbados

Pick up the all-inclusive package at the Sugar Cane Club Hotel & Spa and prepare for full relaxation. And monkeys. Green monkeys, to be precise. These curious primates are not native to Barbados, but came to the island in the 17th century via slave trade ships from West Africa. Green monkeys are also not green, which is a shame. You’ll see them hanging out across the property, but for even more wildlife-spotting head to the Barbados Wildlife Reserve, located just a few miles east of the Sugar Cane Club. The reserve is home to free-roaming green monkeys, maras (strange rabbit-like creatures that aren’t actually rabbits), brocket deer and iguanas.

Oualie Beach Resort, Nevis

Monkey territory at Oualie Beach Resort, Nevis

Oualie Beach Resort isn’t a full all-inclusive resort, but it does offer a package designed for guests who want all meals paid for upfront, as well as unlimited beer, house wines and most mixed drinks. And when you stay on Nevis, you’ll be in the realm of the vervet monkey. Like the green monkeys on Barbados, the vervet monkey isn’t a native, having also arrived on slave ships from West Africa. But they’ve done well adapting to their new home, so much so that they’re often seen as a nuisance. Vervet monkeys, thousands of which now roam freely on the island, like to head out on raiding parties to steal crops from farms and orchards. To see these monkeys in a more natural state away from human settlements, you can hike up into the mountain forests where they live.

Belizean Dreams Resort, Belize

Monkeys at Belizean Dreams all inclusive resort

For unadulterated Caribbean-coast wildlife excursions, it’s hard to beat Belize. With an all-inclusive package at the Belizean Dreams Resort you’ll be just a short hop from pristine rainforests teeming with wildlife, including howler monkeys and gangly but beautiful spider monkeys. Belizean Dreams offers a whole bunch of tours including jungle hiking, wildlife-spotting cruises on the Sittee River, and boat trips down Monkey River in search of the black howler monkey. And for extra adrenaline in the jungle, Belizean Dreams is also one of the top all-inclusive resorts for zip lining .

The 11 Best Places to Travel to if You’re Obsessed With Monkeys

M onkeys are smart, cute, and irresistibly entertaining. They are also an incredibly diverse group of mammals — there are more than 260 different types of monkeys in the world.

All monkeys belong to the order Primates. Within the order, the monkeys are divided into two groups: New World monkeys who live in South and Central Americas, and Old World monkeys who live in Asia and Africa.

Apes, the human’s closest relatives, are a sister group of Old World monkeys, but while they can be considered monkeys, they differ from them in many ways. Unlike monkeys who spend most of their lives in the trees, apes spend some of their time on the ground. Apes also do not have tails and are generally much larger than monkeys.

Regardless of their differences, most primates like to live in the warm tropical forests, with the highest diversity of species found in Brazil . But because they are forest-dependent, primates are the most endangered major group of mammals, with a third of the species listed as Critically Endangered and Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List .

If you are crazy about monkeys and want to see them in the wild and in the most ethical way possible, here are 11 places you should travel to.

1. Pousada Rio Roosevelt, Brazil

There are so many monkeys in the Amazon rainforest that the scientists are still discovering new species . But despite this abundance, the monkeys are not always easy to see, unless you know where to look. The Pousada Rio Roosevelt lodge in the Brazil’s state of Amazonas is one of the best place to spot them.

Lying deep inside the Amazon jungle and surrounded by virgin forest, the lodge is home to 12 species of primates. It is a great spot to see the endangered Peruvian spider monkeys and the equally endangered, but mis-named white-nosed bearded saki (the nose of the bearded saki is actually bright pink).

Both species are threatened by the clearing of the Amazon Rainforest and difficult to see in less pristine areas. The lodge is also good for seeing more common species: brown and white-faced capuchins, brown woolly monkeys, Prince Bernhard’s titi monkeys, the endemic bare-eared squirrel monkeys, and dwarf marmosets — the smallest monkeys on Earth.

Visiting Pousada Rio Roosevelt lodge

As there are no roads in the surrounding forest, the lodge can only be reached by a small plane from Porto Velho (1.15 hours) or Manaus (2.20 hours). The lodge offers customizable stay options and the cost of the air transfer is included in the packages.

2. Kinabatangan River, Borneo

Orangutans in Borneo

Kinabatangan River in Borneo is a great spot to see two unique and endangered primates that are found only in Borneo: proboscis monkey and Borneo orangutan.

The orangutan is Asia’s only great ape. It is found only on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra and it faces extinction on both islands, caused primarily by the clearing of forest for oil palm plantations. The charismatic Borneo orangutan is one of the 25 most critically endangered primates in the world.

Proboscis monkey in borneo

The endangered proboscis monkeys are easier to see on the river. In fact, it is almost impossible not to see them. With their ridiculously oversized noses, the proboscis monkeys are possibly the oddest-looking monkeys on the planet. And if their noses are not odd enough, the males of the species have their bottoms covered in thick white fur which makes them look as if they are wearing tighty-whities.

Visiting Kinabatangan River

To see the orangutan and the proboscis monkeys, stay at the award-winning Sukau Rainforest Lodge and take boat cruises on the river in the early morning and the late afternoon. The lodge will arrange transfers from Sandakan airport.

3. Danum Valley, Borneo

Maroon leaf monkey in Borneo

Danum Valley is another good spot for primate-watching in Borneo. The handsome maroon langurs, also known as red leaf monkeys, often visit the Field Centre , allowing for very close viewing. The nickname leaf monkey comes from langurs’ dietary preference for green leaves of tropical trees.

Another endemic primate that you might encounter in Danum Valley is the endangered Borneo gibbon. Despite their relatively small size, gibbons are apes, just not great apes, but lesser apes. The main giveaway is the lack of tail.

Visiting Danum Valley

It is best to visit Danum Valley with a local tour operator that would make all the necessary arrangements for your trip. Sticky Rice Travel and Adventure Alternative Borneo offer a range of tours to Danum Valley. Transfers from Lahad Datu airport are included in the tours.

4. Khao Yai National Park, Thailand

Gibbon

White-handed gibbon Photo: SandarMeetinsPhotography/Shutterstock

Located 137 km east from Bangkok, Khao Yai National Park is the most-easily accessible National Park in Thailand. It also happens to be one of the best places in the country to see the endangered white-handed gibbon.

If you visit the park in the morning, you are likely to hear the gibbons before you see them — they produce the most complex songs of all the land mammals.

While the white-handed gibbons are safe in the park, they face the risk of extinction outside of the protected areas, mainly due to habitat loss.

The gibbons are not the only primate in the park and you will have no trouble finding the other one — the pig-tailed macaque. Chances are, you will spot them sitting on the road as soon as you drive through the park’s gate.

Visiting Khao Yai

You can join an organized tour from Bangkok, but for the best experience, catch a minivan taxi to the park and stay at the Green Leaf guesthouse . Mr 9 at Green Leaf is considered the best nature guide in Khao Yai. The tours in Khao Yai consist of safari drives and short walks in the jungle.

5. Khao Sam Roy Yot National Park, Thailand

Cute monkey

Most people visit Khao Sam Roy Yot National Park near Hua Hin to see the Phraya Nakhon Cave — a dramatic limestone cave with light streaming in via a natural sinkhole in the roof. But the park is also the best place in the world to see the dusky langur.

Also known as a spectacled langur or a spectacled leaf monkey, it is one of the cutest monkeys in Asia. The large white colored circles around the dusky langur’s eyes give it the appearance of wearing glasses and looking surprised.

Monkey in Thailand

Another monkey you will see in the park is the crab-eating macaque, also known as the long-tailed macaque. Like most macaques, it is a brazen and occasionally aggressive animal so it is best to avoid any interactions with them.

Visiting Khao Sam Roy Yot

Khao Sam Roy Yot is an easy 66-km drive from the seaside town of Hua Hin in Phetchaburi Province. You can rent a car at Hua Hin airport or if you are staying in town, you might like to hire a scooter at your hotel. Alternatively, you can opt for a minivan taxi to collect you at your hotel in Hua Hin, take you to the selected destinations in the park, and bring you back to the hotel.

6. Kanha National Park, India

Languar in India

Gray langur Photo: CHAINPHOTO24/Shutterstock

Kanha Tiger Reserve in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh is a great spot to watch the gray langurs. Also known as Hanuman langurs, they are considered sacred animals in many parts of India.

The most interesting thing about the gray langurs is the unusual partnership they formed with the spotted deer, known as chital in India.

When langurs feed in the trees they discard fruit and leaves that fall on the ground and attract the deer. Tall trees also give langurs a good vantage point to watch for predators and their alarm calls warn the deer of any approaching danger.

But when langurs come to feed on the ground, and they do that frequently, it is the deers’ acute sense of hearing that keeps both species safe from predators.

Both the langurs and the deer are common in the reserve and once you see the langurs you will most likely spot the deer nearby.

Visiting Kanha

Kanha-National-Park.com offers a range of tours starting from New Delhi, Jabalpur, or Nagpur. The eco-friendly Kanha Village Eco Resort also offers jeep safaris in the park and transfers from Jabalpur.

7. Corcovado National Park, Costa Rica

Located on the remote Osa Peninsula, Corcovado National Park is home to all four species of Costa Rica’s monkeys including the endangered Geoffroy’s spider monkey, Central American squirrel monkey , mantled howler , and white-faced capuchin .

The Geoffroy’s spider monkey, also known as the Black-handed spider monkey, has been included in the current list of the world’s 25 most endangered primates by the IUCN. The spider monkeys’ preference for large areas of primary forest makes them particularly sensitive to habitat loss.

The Central American squirrel monkeys are the most adorable primates in the Costa Rican jungle. These social monkeys prefer to live in large groups and can often be heard as they move through the forest squeaking and chirping along the way.

While safe in Corcovado, squirrel monkeys are vulnerable to extinction outside of the protected areas. The main causes of their decline are habitat loss and capture of individuals for the exotic pet trade.

Visiting Corcovado National Park

It is compulsory to have a nature guide with you for visiting the remote wilderness of Corcovado. The access point for Corcovado is the small laid-back town of Drake Bay. Corcovado Expeditions , based in town, offer a range of options for visiting the park. Be prepared to rough it a little — the accommodation in the park is very basic.

8. Palo Verde National Park, Costa Rica

Monkey in costa rica

White-faced capuchin Photo: Sekar B/Shutterstock

If you are looking for the more up-close and personal encounters with monkeys in Costa Rica, head to Palo Verde National Park in Costa Rica’s Guanacaste Province and take a boat cruise.

The white-faced capuchins in the park have no fear of people, so don’t be surprised if they jump into your boat and climb on top of your head. If this does happen, it is best to let the monkeys leave of their own accord. Interacting with them can cause all sorts of misunderstandings and one look at their sharp teeth should be enough to discourage any misplaced affections.

Speaking of teeth, it can be difficult not to laugh at these adorable creatures but be warned that showing of one’s teeth is considered a sign of aggression in the capuchin world. Your heartfelt smiles will likely be met with loud vocalizations and threat posturing by the monkeys.

Visiting Palo Verde National Park

Palo Verde can be visited on a day tour from the nearby city of Liberia. You can hire a taxi in town to take you to the park’s entrance and back. Once in the park, it is the local family-owned Palo Verde boat tours that run the cruises on the Tempisque River. Alternatively, you can take an organized tour from Liberia.

9. Cape of Good Hope, South Africa

Sitting baboon

Chacma baboon Photo: Toye/Shutterstock

An easy 70-km drive from the center of Cape Town, Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve is a good place to see chacma baboons. This baboon is one of the largest monkeys in the world and also considered to be the most dangerous. The troops of chacma baboons have been recorded to rip leopards apart with their strong teeth.

Generally, the chacma baboon is widespread and not considered a threatened species. However, the population in Cape of Good Hope and the rest of the Southern Cape Peninsula has suffered from habitat loss and became isolated. Lacking the natural habitat, the baboons have dispersed into suburban areas, where they cause significant damage by entering people’s homes in search of food. As a result, they are persecuted by the local residents.

The population on the Southern Cape Peninsula is now endangered and may disappear within the next 10 years.

Visiting Cape of Good Hope

The Cape is an easy drive from Cape Town. There are a number of rental car agencies in town. If you prefer an organized tour, Cape of Good Hope Tours offers a range of private, custom tours from Cape Town.

10. Kruger National Park, South Africa

Monkey in Kruger national park, south africa

Vervet monkey Photo: Faer Out/Shutterstock

Kruger National Park is also a good place to see chacma baboons, but there is another interesting monkey that can be found here.

Vervet monkeys are medium-sized, social monkeys that live in troops of 10 to 70 individuals. They are one of the best-studied monkeys, probably because they have been found to display some human-like behaviors, such as anxiety, hypertension, and acting out of spite.

Yet the most interesting thing about vervet monkeys is the color of their testicles. They are bright blue! It is thought that the blue color attracts potential female suitors and the brighter the male’s family jewels are the more popular he’s going to be with the ladies.

Visiting Kruger

The park is easy to visit on a self-drive safari. Alternatively, the park offers guided tours ranging from a day trip to the four-day stay. Viva Safari offers options for budget-conscious travellers. Their tours include a fun option to stay in a treehouse at Marc’s treehouse lodge .

11. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda

Gorilla inside Virunga, DRC

Mountain gorilla Photo: LMSpencer/Shutterstock

Watching mountain gorillas in the ancient rainforest of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is perhaps the most iconic primate-watching experience. The mountain gorillas are critically endangered, with about 880 individuals left in the wild in Uganda, Congo, and Rwanda. The main threats that gorillas face are: poaching, habitat loss, disease, and war and unrest in the region.

To minimize disturbance to gorillas, the number of visitors to their habitat in Bwindi is restricted to no more than 56 people a day. And an official permit must be obtained prior to visiting the park.

Watching mountain gorillas is different from most other primate-watching experienced in that you can spend an extended period of time with them. Once your guide locates a family, you are allowed to spend up to an hour with it, watching the animals interact with each other as they go about their day.

Nagano Snow Monkeys: A Day Trip from Tokyo, Japan

Snow Monkeys of Jigokudani Monkey Park

Five o’clock in the morning is early for almost everyone, even early risers like Adam and me, but it was especially early on our first full morning in Japan. Three days earlier, we had settled into our seats on a flight from Washington Dulles to Beijing. Two days earlier we had landed after almost fourteen hours in the air, where we secured 24-hour visas and left the airport for a walking tour of China’s capital city, a trek that would have been easy on most days but felt taxing to our stiff, sleep-deprived bodies. One day earlier we had awoken at six o’clock in the morning after sleeping for just four hours in a hotel close to Beijing International Airport, which was convenient for our connection to Tokyo that same day. We landed that afternoon in Japan’s capital, exchanged our Japan Rail vouchers for validated passes, made the journey from Narita to our hotel in the city, ate our first proper meal at what would have been a proper British pub if we were in London (instead, it was a convenient if unorthodox choice), and fell into a dreamless sleep until the alarm startled us into consciousness. It was time to see the snow monkeys.

The snow monkeys of Nagano, Japan

If you’re planning a trip to Tokyo, a day trip to see the snow monkeys in Nagano pairs the opportunity to see a beautiful part of the country with dozens of playful animals representing a colorful piece of local lore. We had a terrific time—and we know you’ll enjoy it just as much!

A Quick History of Jigokudani Monkey Park

Although seeking out Nagano’s snow monkeys makes a great day trip from Tokyo, you may wonder why the snow monkeys decided to call the region home. The Japanese macaques have lived in the Nagano area for decades, but their habitat began to shrink as ski resorts began to populate the mountains in the 1950s. With nowhere else to go, the monkeys moved into local towns and quickly proved to be a nuisance; as they began looting fruit from neighboring farms, locals were given permission from police to hunt them as a way to keep their population under control.

The entrance to Jigokudani Monkey Park

According to local tales of the monkeys’ earliest days at Jigokudani Monkey Park, researchers would enjoy onsen—outdoor hot springs—during their visits to study the monkeys. One day, an apple intended for the monkeys fell into the onsen, and one of the more curious monkeys jumped into the hot water to retrieve it. The monkey paused for a while, seemingly enjoying the relaxing heat, and before long a few other monkeys had joined him for a swim. Soon, female monkeys were regularly using the onsen to bathe. Since then, generations of macaques have benefited from their determined ancestor, and hours upon hours of relaxing swims are credited to one stray piece of fruit and the primate who wouldn’t let it go uneaten.

As an important note, although the monkeys are encouraged to remain in the area by offering them food, they are not required to stay there. There are no fences or other restrictions in place to keep the snow monkeys in any one area. Additionally, they are not forced to soak in the hot springs or enter areas where tourists might be waiting to see them. The snow monkeys are wild animals, and they are treated as such.

Nagano Snow Monkeys: the Day Trip Experience

The snow monkeys of Nagano, Japan

I expected to get a bit more sleep on the train ride to Nagano, but Japan is stunning in the winter, and Adam and I sat fixated as the landscape whooshed by us and our high-speed train made its way north to our destination. It felt like no time had passed when our train slowed to a stop and announced we were in Nagano. With our day trip tour scheduled to depart from Nagano Station, we stopped into a convenience store for a few snacks and some coffee before meeting our guide and two busloads of fellow travelers looking forward to seeing the snow monkeys.

The drive to Jigokudani Monkey Park takes about an hour from Nagano Station, and when the bus was finally parked and offloaded in many ways our journey was just beginning. From the parking lot, it’s a mile-long trek to the hot springs where the snow monkeys are commonly found, and although our visit took place on a somewhat mild day, the walk was anything but easy. December and January are ideal times to visit the snow monkeys because there’s a great chance you’ll also see snow; although the monkeys are often interested in bathing when there isn’t snow on the ground, it’s a much more magical setting to watch them frolic with pristine white powder in the background. However, with the snow comes its less welcome partner: ice.

The icy trail to Jigokudani Monkey Park

At the end of the walk, as we climbed the steps leading into the park, we caught our first glimpse of the world we were about to enter. Below us, along the Yokoyu River, a small monkey darted across the rocks. He looked up at us, perhaps even making eye contact with us, before rushing along again in the direction we, too, were headed. I wondered if we would see him again when we made it to the hot springs.

Once we were inside Jigokudani Monkey Park, it took mere moments before we arrived at what must be the best primate pool party on the planet. As we walked across a bridge that leads to the main onsen, a tiny baby monkey—perhaps the same one we had seen along the river—darted past us and cannonballed into the water. One monkey, who moments before was relaxing peacefully in the steamy water, glared in his direction before lazily wading away from the chaos brought by the tiny intruder. Adam and I smiled; it was the first of many story lines we knew we would see that day.

The snow monkeys are wild and untrained, but they are not afraid of humans. Their behavior ranged from cute and playful to frightening and erratic. For the most part, we watched in quiet fascination as little monkeys hitched rides around the area on their mothers’ backs. We delighted in their adorable antics as they splashed, swam, and soaked in the hot springs, clearly appreciating the simple joy of a steamy bath on a cold day. We also watched as snow monkeys taunted one another, sometimes pushing each other too far and causing brief battles to break out as they chased each other, hissing and squawking as they darted between human legs. No fight seemed too vicious, though; grudges were quickly forgotten, and snow monkeys who couldn’t stand each other one minute were happily swimming together the next.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Stephanie & Adam Hubka (@roadunraveled) on Dec 30, 2019 at 4:27am PST

We had almost two hours to enjoy within Jigokudani Monkey Park, which was plenty of time for us to make the most of the experience. While you could certainly spend a few hours watching the monkeys, even a single hour will give you enough time to explore the park, take photos or videos, and pause to enjoy the experience of being there.

Additional Things to See in Nagano

Because we booked a full day tour to see the snow monkeys, we also had the chance to enjoy a few other destinations in Nagano.

Zenkoji temple in Nagano, Japan

Because no trip to Japan is complete without sampling sake, we also had the chance to spend some time at Monzen Terrace Enya for a sake tasting . Sake is an alcoholic beverage made from fermented rice, and we were glad to warm up in front of a fireplace while learning about the different styles and flavors available.

Tips for Visiting the Nagano Snow Monkeys

If you’re planning a trip to see the Nagano snow monkeys, here are a few tips to help make your trip easier.

► Consider a Snow Monkeys Tour

► Know the Train Schedules

Even if you have flexible travel plans, it’s a good idea to know the train schedules to be sure you don’t get stranded in Nagano. The Hokuriku-Shinkansen train runs directly between Tokyo Station and Nagano Station, and there are multiple trains running between the cities each day. We did not have reserved tickets, but you may be able to secure reserved tickets by visiting a JR Rail office. Our roundtrip journey was included with the seven-day JR Rail passes we purchased before arriving in Japan, but you can purchase roundtrip or one-way tickets at the train station before you depart.

► Take the right gear

► Put your camera down

By all means, take as many photos and videos as you want while watching the snow monkeys in their natural habitat, but don’t forget to put your phone down for a few moments while you visit to enjoy watching them with your eyes instead of through a screen. While we were excited to leave with lots of great photo captures and some fun videos, the best memories we have of our experience are just that: memories that can only be relived through telling stories and thinking about the sights and sounds of the monkeys scurrying along snow-covered railings before plunging into the hot springs. Those memories are some of our favorites from Japan, and we hope you’ll find a few that are just as wonderful during your trip!

Hotels in Nagano

We stayed in Tokyo during our visit, but you will find plenty of hotel options in Nagano if you are planning to stay for more than a day. We use Booking.com to find our hotels—take a look at some of the deals below and see if there is a hotel for you!

Enjoy Your Day Trip to See the Nagano Snow Monkeys!

monkey trip

Visiting the Nagano snow monkeys in winter is an experience you won’t soon forget, and if you have the chance to include it as part of a vacation in Japan, we know it will create a full day of wonderful memories.

(The only thing better than a day visiting the Nagano snow monkeys was the eight blissfully uninterrupted hours of sleep we got that night. After all, we believe in making the most of every second of your vacation time, but our Japan trip was just getting started—we had a lot more of Tokyo to see!)

6 Places to Hang with Monkeys in the Wild

If you’re the type of person who throws a primate party for Monkey Day or if you just like adorable simians, plan your next vacation to hang with monkeys in the wild. From the hot springs of Japan to the forests of Zanzibar, here are some of the best places in the world to see monkeys monkeying around in nature.

1. Costa Rica – Squirrel Monkeys, Capuchin Monkeys and Mantled Howler Monkeys

Capuchin monkey in Costa Rica

Known for its bountiful wildlife, Costa Rica is home to several species of monkeys, including Central American squirrel monkeys, white-faced capuchin monkeys, and mantled howler monkeys. You could possibly see all 3 while exploring Manuel Antonio National Park.

Not much larger than their namesakes, squirrel monkeys are the smallest primates you can find in Costa Rica. Listen for the loud rasping roars of the aptly named howler monkeys and watch for capuchins swinging through the trees with their prehensile tails. Also, if you’re lucky, you might even see a sloth !

2. Japan – Snow Monkeys

Japanese snow monkeys in hot springs

If you love monkeys, you’ve probably seen pictures of Japan’s snow monkeys soaking in hot springs or rolling snowballs. Bundle up to see their adorable winter antics in person by visiting the Snow Monkey Park near Joshinestu Kogen National Park in Nagano. During the warmer months, the Japanese macaques don’t bathe as much, but baby monkeys scamper about and play. Take a day trip from Tokyo to see the snow monkeys or book a nearby ryokan to soak in some hot springs yourself.

3. Borneo – Proboscis Monkeys

Wild proboscis monkeys in Borneo

Only found on the island of Borneo, endangered proboscis monkeys make quite a sight with their unusually large noses. Glide through the mangroves on a boat tour to see families of reddish-furred proboscis monkeys feeding in the treetops. Believe it or not, male proboscis monkeys use their huge noses to attract females. Not only that, proboscis monkeys are the champion swimmers of the primate world. They use their semi-webbed hands and feet to outswim crocodiles. While cruising down the river on a proboscis monkey tour, keep an eye out for other wildlife native to Borneo, such as orangutans, hornbills, and pygmy elephants.

4. Spain – Barbary Macaques in Gibraltar

Monkey at the lookout point in Gibraltar

You’ll find the only wild monkeys in Europe hanging out at the Rock of Gibraltar . Ride the cable car up to the lookout point to snap photos of these famous Barbary macaques with a gorgeous view of Moroccan mountains across the water.

Just keep a close eye on your possessions! These cheeky monkeys have learned to unzip bags to steal food from unsuspecting tourists. Purposefully feeding the monkeys is illegal. However, if you respect their space, it’s easy to get close enough for a cute picture.

5. Zanzibar – Red Colobus Monkeys

Red colobus monkey in Zanzibar

Head to the island of Zanzibar off the coast of Tanzania for to see endangered red colobus monkeys in the Jozani Forest. With hair like Einstein and a pink nose and lips, Zanzibar red colobus monkeys make for adorably photogenic primates. As birds sing in the trees and colorful butterflies flit by, walk the trails of Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park with an eye on the canopy. Go with a naturalist guide who knows where the wild monkeys like to hang out for your best chance to see some.

6. Bali – Sacred Monkey Forest in Ubud

Wild monkeys in the Monkey Forest in Ubud, Bali

Watch long-tailed macaques climb over moss-covered statues and Hindu shrines tucked into the jungle in the Sacred Monkey Forest in Bali. Since they encounter people every day, these primates often allow visitors to get quite close. But be careful not to take anything edible or shiny into the Monkey Forest. Mischievous monkeys often steal water bottles, sunglasses, and even jewelry from unsuspecting tourists. You’ll find a lot of monkeys near the entrance where they get fed, but be sure to wander the forest paths across intricately carved bridges surrounded by jungle vines for a storybook experience.

Wild Monkey Facts:

  • Monkey Day celebrates all things simian every December 14 and was invented by comic book artists Casey Sorrow and Eric Millikin.
  • Over 260 species of monkeys live around the world, but many of them are endangered due to habitat loss. However, donating to conservation organizations or visiting national parks where monkeys live are some ethical travel activities you can do to support wildlife conservation .
  • Monkeys that live in Africa, Asia, and Gibraltar are known as Old World Monkeys, while species in the Americas are called New World Monkeys. All monkeys have tails, but only some species in Central and South America have prehensile tails they can hang from.
  • The Barbary macaque’s tail is so tiny that people originally mistook them for apes.
  • Japanese macaques live all over Japan, including near Kyoto at Arashiyama Monkey Park , but not all of them bathe in hot springs. The ones in Nagano cleverly learned to use hot springs and roll snowballs by watching people.

Monkey River Tour – Everything You Need To Know

belize howler monkeys

Want to see Howler Monkeys in Belize? We’ve Got Your Destination!

An abundance of visitors come to Belize to see wildlife in a nation so sparsely populated, mile upon mile of rain forest, jungle and preserves keep this wildlife legacy safe for future generations. If asked to pick one animal visitors enjoy seeing most, adults and kids grin when agreeing: “Monkeys!” For North Americans who have never seen a monkey outside a zoo, a Monkey River Tour could be the high point of your travels.

Monkey River Tour

A Monkey River adventure takes travelers deep into the land of Howler Monkeys, primates so loud, they could never hide from predators without giving themselves away. To visit their neighborhood, you’ll first have to journey from Placencia (if you are vacationing in Placencia Peninsula) to Monkey River Village by boat, passing  mangrove swamp and other exotic scenery that includes wild flowers, scaly critters and (if you’re lucky) manatees, since these gentle marine mammals make their homes here among mangrove-filled estuaries.

Why visit Monkey River?

This one-of-a-kind excursion is fascinating and fun for people of all ages. Kids stare wide-eyed at monkeys whose cries far exceed decibels coming from heavy-metal rock bands! Adults learn more about life along a river bank that explodes with color and sounds: birds, animals and plants, all of which co-exist nicely here in southern Belize. Learn about medicinal plants and take a refreshing swim during your tour. You can look forward to Creole cookery prepared by villagers (please bring money for lunch) that is so tasty, even your taste buds will remember your Monkey River Tour.

Where in Belize is it located?

Monkey River Village is located in southern Belize’s Toledo District , in close proximity to towns like Placencia Village and Punta Gorda Town.

monkey trip

The best time to go

Since the monkeys stick around 12 months of the year, humans eager to see them can show up in Belize year-round, too. Given river access that’s required to get to your destination, it stands to reason that if there’s flooding during the green season, the trip could be a bit more thrilling, but that doesn’t mean tours are cancelled just because it rains!

Best way to get here

If you’ve a car, a map and/or a GPS system, your resort host can point you in the direction of the monkeys from anywhere in southern Belize. No worries about parking. There’s not a single car in the village which has only two streets, so it’s impossible to get lost in Monkey River Village. You can also get here by taking a 15-mile boat ride to the mouth of the Monkey River and then hike to the village. If you’re traveling from other areas in Belize, a tour service is your best bet.

Best way to experience Monkey River Tours

The most highly-recommended way to take a Monkey River Tour is to book a registered tour guide who is well-versed in the area’s animals, people and landscape. Wear hiking shoes to avoid surprises and long pants to protect you from bug bites and thorns. If you intend to swim in the river, bring a suit and don’t leave your sunglasses, sunscreen and hat back at your resort in your excitement. You’ll travel by boat and by foot through forest and along trails to reach Howler Monkey nirvana where you can let loose frustrations by howling at the simians. Travelers tell us that shouting at monkeys is better than therapy and these primates never send a bill!

In Search of Snow Monkeys: Getting to Jigokudani Monkey Park from Tokyo

Planning to visit the snow monkeys from Tokyo? It’s definitely a bucket-list item. Japanese macaques have been patronizing the hot-spring baths at Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park for decades (since 1964, officially), and they have become one of Japan’s most iconic sights.

Even in the era of “overtourism”, a visit to the Japanese snow monkey park — tucked away high in the mountains of Nagano Prefecture — is a worthy, relatively uncrowded endeavor.

It’s possible to see the snow monkeys as a day trip from Tokyo, but it’s more fun as part of a longer itinerary. Here’s an overview of how to make your way from Tokyo to the snow monkey park, and what to expect when you get there.

Pro tip: Jigokudani Monkey Park is a great addition to the itinerary if you have a Hokuriku Arch Pass or a JR East Nagano and Niigata Area Pass . These regional rail passes are an economical way to travel around on the Shinkansen.

What is the Jigokudani Monkey Park?

The famous Snow Monkeys (Japanese Macaques) bathe in the onsen hot springs of Nagano, Japan.

Jigokudani Monkey Park is a remote park in Nagano, where you can see the famous Japanese snow monkeys having a bath. The park is home to a whole troupe of wild Japanese Macaques. There are no cages, and the park does not have a perimeter fence to keep the monkeys inside.

The park does feed the monkeys, so they have a reason to pop round for a visit. The monkeys are not trained, though, and they choose whether to visit the park and whether to take a dip in the hot spring (onsen). That’s part of the beauty of the place, and something that sets it apart from many of Japan’s other animal experiences .

The iconic scenes with monkeys in the onsen surrounded by snow can be seen from roughly late December until early April. There’s little to no snow for the rest of the year, but even then, it’s still a great opportunity to get up close and personal with some unique Japanese fauna.

Pro tip: Take a look at the live snow monkey camera to get an idea of the vibe.

Where is Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park?

Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park is in Yamanouchi in the Shimotakai district of Nagano. It’s within the vast Shiga Kōgen National Park, a prime place for hiking, as well as skiing and snowboarding .

The word “Jigokudani” means “Hell Valley” — and is a name given to this, and several other volcanic areas of Japan, because of the steam and boiling water that escapes from the harsh terrain.

How far away is it? It takes a minimum of 4 hours to get to the Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park from Tokyo, depending on your mode of transport and traffic/weather conditions.

When should I visit the snow monkeys?

January and February are prime “snow monkey” spotting months.

The Yamanouchi region receives heavy snowfall in winter, and it’s generally white from December through March. However, January and February are said to be the best time of year to visit the monkey park. It’s definitely the most scenic, with snow-capped trees backgrounding groups of bathing Japanese macaques.

You can actually visit in any month, though — park employees feed the monkeys year round. Because of that, they can be found near the man-made rock bath (the center of attention) fairly reliably, even in summer.

Monkey next to a hot spring in summer

Snow monkey park: Opening times and entrance fees

¥ 800 for adults 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Nov. to March)

The monkey park is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the warmer months, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. between November and March.

The park entrance fee is ¥ 800 for adults, and half that for kids.

Getting to the snow monkey park from Tokyo

It is possible to make a day trip to see the snow monkeys from Tokyo. But you’ll need to leave bright and early, and be prepared for a long day. If possible, we recommend extending your trip and spending at least one night in the area.

There are three main ways to get to Jigokudani Monkey Park from Tokyo, so let’s break them down.

Pro tip: If you’re committed to making a snow monkey day trip from Tokyo, we recommend this bus tour . It includes a round-trip coach from Shinjuku, and entry to the monkey park. Plus, you also get an all-you-can-eat buffet lunch. It costs ¥ 16,000 , which is less than the approximately ¥ 20,000 you’d otherwise spend on transport alone.

Shinkansen and bus: The best route

¥ 10,140 one way 2 hours and 15 minutes, plus transfer time Only one transfer, and partly covered by regional rail passes

This route is by far the easiest and most convenient way to get from Tokyo to the snow monkey park. You’ll take the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Nagano Station.

Then, from the East Exit of Nagano Station, there are well sign-posted buses, run by Nagano Electric Railway, leaving for the snow monkey park about once an hour. They cost ¥ 1,800 each way, and the journey to the Snow Monkey Park Bus Stop (next to the Shigakōgen Roman Museum) takes about 45 minutes.

Using a JR Pass or a regional rail pass to get to Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park

The Hokuriku Shinkansen part of the journey is covered by regional rail passes, so it makes sense to use one if the snow monkey expedition is part of a longer itinerary.

Our top picks for rail passes to use for this trip are the Hokuriku Arch Pass and the JR East Nagano and Niigata Area Pass .

The Hokuriku Arch Pass is great value if you’re planning a round trip between Tokyo and Osaka or Kyoto, and want to take a more scenic route. Along the way, you can stop at Jigokudani Monkey Park, as well as other destinations like Karuizawa and Kanazawa .

Meanwhile, the Nagano and Niigata Area Pass is great for exploring the region in-depth — for example, you can hit up ski slopes at Gala Yuzawa , and the hot springs at Kusatsu Onsen .

Shinkansen, train, and bus: For train fans

¥ 10,240 one way 2 hours and 30 minutes, plus transfer time Cool old trains, partly covered by regional rail passes and the Snow Monkey Pass

If you’re a train buff, you might like this route: it makes use of the Nagano Electric Railway. This line runs a combination of iconic former Odakyu Railway Romance Car train sets and former Narita Express wagons.

Note: Nagano Electric Railway trains are not covered by the JR Pass, or any other regional JR passes, since it’s a private, non-JR railway company. You can book seats online .

The Yamanouchi region

To get to the snow monkey park, you take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Nagano Station. Then take the Nagano Electric Railway to Yudanaka Station. There are “Snow Monkey” and “Yukemuri” services, which run six times each day, with the journey taking about 45 minutes and costing ¥ 1,590 .

From Yudanaka Station, there is one bus each hour from 9 a.m. until 12 noon, then less frequent services after that. Check the timetable here . The bus takes 10 to 15 minutes ( ¥ 310 ) depending on the service, and the bus stops at a sligtly more convenient bus stop further up the hill.

The Snow Monkey Pass

If you opt for this route, consider getting a Snow Monkey Pass. It costs ¥ 3,400 and covers the Nagano Electric Railway, the bus from Yudanaka, and entry to the monkey park. Just the round trip from Nagano Station to the monkey park would usually cost ¥ 3,800 , so you’ll definitely see savings. Plus, the pass is actually valid for two days, so it’s great value if you’re staying overnight in the area.

By car: Convenient for groups and families

¥ 5,000 to ¥ 6,000 in tolls one way 4 to 5 hours, with breaks

monkey trip

If coming from Tokyo, the trip will take you 4 to 5 hours, including rest stops. From central Tokyo, you need to get on to the Kanetsu Expressway that heads towards Niigata, then switch to the Jōetsu Espressway heading towards Nagano. After about 4 hours of driving and ¥ 5,000 to ¥ 6,000 of tolls, you leave the expressway at the Shinshu-Nakano Interchange. From here, it’s a 30-minute drive to either of the parking lots.

There are two parking lots. One is free ( Jigokudani Monkey Park Main Parking Lot ), with a 25 to 30-minute walk to Jigokudani. The other costs ¥ 500 ( Jigokudani Parking ), but means a shorter, 15-minute walk to the bathing area.

The paid parking is reached via a narrow road, is closed in winter, and is not suitable for large vehicles. While the walk is shorter, it also involves a climb up some stairs on a rather steep dirt track. If you or members of your group struggle with stairs or rough ground, then the longer walk from Kanbayashi Onsen Parking may actually be a better option!

One-day tour packages for Jigukodani Snow Monkey Park

Japanese Macaques relaxes in a hot spring on a snowy day.

If you want to pack the snow monkeys into a day trip, we recommend joining a tour. It will save you a lot of stress, and can actually be great value.

Best snow monkey tour from Tokyo

¥ 16,000 Book here Great value. Includes round-trip transport, park entry, and a buffet lunch.

For those who want to make a snow monkey day trip from Tokyo, we recommend this bus tour . You’ll also visit the Shiga Roman Museum while you’re in the area, as a bonus.

Best snow monkey tour from Nagano

¥ 22,000 Book here Snow monkeys, sake tasting, and Zenkōji Temple

If you are already in Nagano City, you can join this tour . Not only will you visit Jigokudani Monkey Park, but you’ll also go sake tasting and visit Zenkōji Temple . Lunch and transport are included, and you’ll be accompanied by an English-speaking guide.

Overnighting: Accommodation options near Jigukodani Monkey Park

While you can visit the snow monkeys from Tokyo, it will take your whole day — and it will be a long day indeed. Instead, we recommend staying nearby to get the most out of all that travel time.

The closest hotel to the snow monkeys is Korakukan Ryokan , a traditional Japanese inn that is in the valley itself. It’s not cheap, but it does offer an up-close-and-personal view of the primates and a rare chance to bathe with them in the facility’s own outdoor hot spring bath. There are indoor and private baths too, if you aren’t so keen on sharing with Curious George and his crew.

Your other options are staying in the nearby towns of Yudanaka or Shibu, where you’ll be able to find cheaper hotels and inns, most of which feature their own hot spring baths, too. Try the intimate and onsen-equipped Yudanaka Yasuragi in Yudanaka. You can also walk around and visit the numerous public baths in the area — many of the onsen use an honesty-box system for payment.

Nearby Nagano City is also full of hotel options, but doesn’t have much going for it besides Zenkōji Temple . Instead, the nearby Shibu Onsen area offers a quaint, convenient, and historic base for exploring the area.

No monkeying about: Rules and reminders

Monkeys fighting

The monkeys may like bathing, but they’re far from domesticated. Like any wild animals, it’s important that you don’t try to touch or feed them. Leave doggo at home, keep a safe distance, and avoid looking in their uncannily human eyes (they’ll take it as a sign of aggression and may come at you). Oh, and don’t try to bathe with them (unless you’re doing so at Korakukan Ryokan). Just enjoy the sight of them taking advantage of a 100% free outdoor bath.

Frequently asked questions

Is there somewhere to eat at the snow monkey park.

There is no food or drink available at Jigokudani, and carrying any food or drink into the park is not permitted. However, meals are available at Jigokudani Onsen Korakukan on the other side of the river from the monkey park. There is also a cafe called Enza, between the main parking lot and the start of the park trail.

How much time do you need for Jigokudani Monkey Park?

Allow yourself an hour or two to explore the park — that’s about enough time to see all there is to see.

10 things to do in Moscow's Gorky Park

monkey trip

Gorky Park is once again one of the most popular walking and leisure places for Muscovites and it’s really busy on weekends. It's definitely one of the must-see sights of Moscow and locals would definitely recommend you visit it at least once. So what to do once you’re in Gorky Park?

1. Walk with a view

monkey trip

Of course, walking is the main thing to do in any park. Gorky Park offers free entrance 24/7, which, by the way, is a disabled friendly space. The territory of the park is huge and combines several “mini-parks” inside along with a long walking path that lets you follow the Moskva River (just like in Scorpions' song!) and enjoy the river views and tour boats. At the same time, you can head deeper inside the park and take a stroll along its multiple paths.

And if you are ready for a longer walk to improve those results on your step tracker - take a stroll along the river from Muzeon Park through Gorky Park, and then Neskuchny Sad (literally “Not Boring Garden”), finishing at Vorobyovy Gory (“Sparrow Hills”). By the way, don’t worry about having to turn back after a long walk, because there are metro stations on either side of the park: ‘Park Kultury’ or ‘Okrtyabrskaya’ at one end and ‘Vorobyovy Gory’ at the other.

2. Use free WI-FI

monkey trip

Moscow nowadays is more and more reminiscent of a city of the future, as it has every imaginable service working 24/7, an app for everything you could need, and free WI-FI just about everywhere, including Gorky Park.

So why not take advantage of it by downloading an audio guide explaining you the history of Gorky Park during WWII , for instance, and add some additional educational value to your walk!

3. Rent a bike or do other sports

monkey trip

There is a long bike track that stretches along the Moskva River within Gorky Park and beyond. You can rent a bike, longboard, skateboard (or even a children’s buggy). You can download a handy cycle audio guide that can help you explore the territory better, with interesting facts about ponds, museums and the park’s many other attractions.

Gorky Park also offers lots of opportunities for other sports. There is an official Nike base that frequently arranges running clubs and workouts. There are also several playgrounds for football, basketball, as well as an extreme skate park.

Surprisingly or not, you can also play petanque (boules) in Gorky Park. This game popular among retired French people became popular among hipsters, thanks to the former ‘La Boule’ cafe that set up a few lanes back in 2011 (another cafe has since opened at the same place called Cochonnet - Petanque & Fun Cafe).

monkey trip

Gorky Park these days has loads of food venues for any taste, from historical Soviet ice cream to modern street food, as well as plenty of sitdown restaurants. Try Greek Gyros, Vietnamiese ‘Bo’ street food, or just grab a coffee and croissant to go anywhere.

If you’d like to have dinner, choose a place with a view near one of the park’s ponds. You can find a grill restaurant called ‘Zharovnya’ next to the main entrance and Pioneer Pond or one of the many nice restaurants next to Golitsyn Pond: ‘Ostrovok’, ‘Pizzamento’, ‘Lebedinoye Ozero’ (literally “Swan Lake”) and others.

5. Explore Russian & Soviet history

monkey trip

Gorky Park’s full title is ‘Central Park of Culture and Leisure named after Maksim Gorky’. It opened in 1928 and since 1932 has been named after the famous Soviet writer Maxim Gorky. The place was considered to be the main leisure area for citizens of the capital, and so, was arguably designed by the best architects. One just has to take a look at the magnificent entrance arch! (inside it you can find the Museum of Gorky Park history , while on top is an observation deck).

These days, it’s a modern and stylish park (reconstructed in 2011), but little interesting pockets of Soviet past can be found everywhere still. The park offers guided historical tours and other similar types of so-called “edutainment”. (check the events schedule on the park’s website ). If you head over to the adjacent park - Muzeon Park, you’ll find some nice sightseeing there - even a cemetery of old Soviet statues and busts, including ones of Lenin and Stalin, that were “sent to exile” here after the USSR collapsed.

6. Entertain your kids

monkey trip

Gorky Park has always been a family-friendly park and a favorite place for kids of all ages. You can find a lot of entertainment for kids near Pioneer Pond, including a nice carousel and a recently opened  playground. It is an entire mini-world, a cross between a jungle and an aqua park. There are lots of slides and monkey bars, where kids can climb and have fun on, including the ‘Mega swings’: 29 swings that rotate and move all the possible ways and display an awesome night light show.

7. Explore contemporary art

monkey trip

The park hosts the ‘Garage Museum for Contemporary Art’, which is probably the main and most famous institution of its type and founded back in 2008. It hosts large exhibitions of the world’s and Russia’s most interesting artists and runs a big educational program.

The museum’s building also deserves your attention. It currently looks like a modern  polycarbonate construction. However, it was once an abandoned Soviet restaurant, which was reconstructed and redesigned by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, who preserved original Soviet elements, such as some mosaics - which you can explore once inside. (You can also find a nice restaurant in the museum)

8. Go to the movies

monkey trip

In summer, Gorky Park has an open air cinema called ‘Pioneer’, which screens a lot of movies - from mainstream to art house. Some movies also have English subtitles. Check the schedule and book tickets in advance here .

Garage museum also has its own cinema called ‘Garage Screen’, which screens a wide range of films and documentaries devoted to art and hosts lectures from a variety of interesting speakers. Check the schedule here .

9. Rent a boat

monkey trip

Though you might have to stand in a long line to get a boat on weekends, it’s nice to be able to paddle a little in nature, while being in the middle of a megapolis! Both park’s ponds, Golitsyn (a bigger one) and Pioneer, offer boats and catamarans for rent at affordable prices (check them here ).

10. Skate the ice rink

monkey trip

In winter, Gorky Park transforms into a wonderland with one of the most gorgeous ice skating rinks in the city. You can enjoy the additional music, New Year festive atmosphere - and mulled wine (just not on the ice!). There are also plenty of ice skate rental points and very comfortable and warm changing rooms.

Check the ice skating rules here .

Moscow is a city where the past and the future live side by side. Here you will find everything from medieval fortresses and Soviet monoliths to glass skyscrapers and innovation centers. Moscow’s spirit mirrors its uncontainable size. Muscovites, the city’s approximately 12 million residents, are always on the run, so be prepared to keep pace with their energy. Here’s how to make the most of three days in Moscow .

Day 1: Mosaics and metro stations

9 a.m. Navigate the labyrinth of the Moscow metro , a living, breathing work of art crisscrossing the metropolis. Expect marble arches and pillars, gilded mosaics, and sparkling chandeliers. Each station is unique. Some of the most beautiful stations are Kievskaya and Prospekt Mira (brown line); Mayakovskaya (dark green line); and Ploschad Revolutsii , Arbatskaya and Elektrozavodskaya (dark blue line). Getting lost on the metro is a rite of passage. However, ahead of the 2018 World Cup, most trains introduced route maps and announcements in English to make navigation easier for outsiders.

Three stations take you to Red Square, but Ploschad Revolutsii is ideal. Its platforms have numerous bronze statues of soldiers with their dogs. Locals often stop by to rub the dogs’ noses as they make a wish. ( See pictures of Moscow’s surprisingly elegant subway stations. )

9:45 a.m. Head to the iconic Red Square to see the red-bricked towers and the eastern wall of the Moscow Kremlin, Vladimir Lenin’s mausoleum, the State Historical Museum , and the psychedelically colorful domes of the St. Basil’s Cathedral . Queue early outside Lenin’s mausoleum for a spooky date with the man behind the Russian Revolution, who has rested in this tomb, preserved in chemicals, for almost 100 years .

The postcard-perfect St. Basil’s Cathedral was built in the 16th century to commemorate Tsar Ivan the Terrible’s victory over the Khanate of Kazan and the transformation of Moscow into a major center of power. Drop in for a quick visit or keep walking south towards the Moskva River and the Bolshoi Moskvaretskii Bridge for spectacular views of the Kremlin and the Red Square.

Another structure that will catch your eye is the golden-domed Cathedral of Christ the Savior , just southwest of the Kremlin. Unlike St. Basil’s, this Cathedral did not survive the communist persecution of religion. The original was destroyed in 1931 and the area was converted to an open-air swimming pool, the largest in the world. The fall of communism brought with it religious freedom and the Cathedral was rebuilt in the 1990s. If you turn around, you will see one of the “Seven Sisters,” the Stalinist monoliths that command Moscow’s skyline .

11:45 a.m. Head back towards the Red Square for a shopping trip at GUM (pronounced goom ), the largest department store in Russia. Much like Russia, the store has undergone many changes. Built in imperial times as a massive trading center, GUM’s Soviet-era badge of honor was being relatively better stocked than other stores. Today, it’s a glittering mall that houses Hermès and Louis Vuitton. Even if you don’t shop, the long, arched galleries and concave glass roof make it an architectural delight. Next, make your way to the third floor for Stolovaya No. 57 (Canteen No. 57), a Soviet-style restaurant with local dishes and a laid-back vibe. Try the syrniki (roughly translated as cheesecakes), buckwheat with mushroom sauce, or meat cutlets.

2 p.m. The Moscow Kremlin , the seat of the Russian Government, was built in the 15th century and houses cathedrals, museums, and unique objects from imperial Russia. Start with the Armory Chamber , a treasure trove of Fabergé eggs, imperial dresses, and gifts presented to the Tsars. Don’t miss the Diamond Fund inside the Armory where guests can marvel at the crown of Tsarina Catherine the Great.

The Bolshoi Theatre hosts ballet and opera performances, including classics like Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake.

Take a stroll around Cathedral Square to admire the golden domes that mushroom from Orthodox cathedrals. Look out for the 19-foot-high bronze Tsar Bell for great photo ops. The nearby Tsar Cannon is also worth a look. Wrap up in the Kremlin Garden and see if you can spot Cosmos, the lone oak tree that was planted by Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space, two days after his extraordinary flight in April 1961 . ( Trees that traveled to space now live on Earth. Here’s where to find them. )

7 p.m. Finish your day with a ballet or opera performance at Bolshoi Theatre , one of the strongholds of Russian theatrical excellence since the 19th century. If you are lucky, you might be able to catch Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece Swan Lake on the stage where it premiered in 1877. Performances sell out so book in advance, and arrive early to enjoy the neoclassical building. Russians take theater seriously so wear your best outfit.

Day 2: Fine art and food

10 a.m. The extraordinary entrance to Tretyakov Gallery welcomes guests to Moscow’s most definitive collection of fine arts spanning almost a millennium. You can explore 12th-century icons and mosaics or get lost in the brushstrokes of 19th- and 20th-century Russian heavyweights such as Ivan Shishkin and Ilya Repin. The New Tretyakov wing showcases artists from the Soviet period.

1 p.m. Soak up some summer sun in one of Moscow’s most dynamic open spaces: Park Gorky , a hipster paradise that underwent a major makeover from a Soviet relic to the center of cultural life. Grab some food on the go or sit down for a meal at Grill Bar Zharovnya or La Boule . Wander through the open-air sculpture museum, Muzeon , the home of countless statues and symbols from the Soviet times. Muzeon runs next to the Moscow River and offers a great view of the almost 322-foot-high statue of Tsar Peter the Great.

7 p.m. One place you must dine in Moscow is White Rabbit . The restaurant, which has been featured among the top 50 in the world, owes its success to chef Vladimir Mukhin, whose culinary prowess was featured on Netflix’s Chef’s Table . White Rabbit serves Russian food with innovative twists; think sea urchin caviar and beetroot hummus. Quite fittingly, there is also rabbit on the menu. Did we mention the restaurant’s glass dome offers spectacular views of Moscow City?

Day 3: Markets and museums

10 a.m. If the Moscow Kremlin is stately, then the colorful Izmailovo Kremlin cultural center has a bit of a Disneyland feel to it. Built in 2007, Izmailovo is a great place for a stroll before bargain-hunting at Vernisazh , a flea market with stalls selling Cold War memorabilia. You will find stamps, banknotes, pins, propaganda posters, and even steel mugs from Soviet times. Score great deals on matryoshkas , Russian nesting dolls; khokhloma , hand-painted wooden handicrafts; and Baltic amber jewelry. Don’t miss contemporary twists on traditional Russian gifts, such as nesting dolls of modern politicians and music boxes shaped like Orthodox cathedrals. For a market of its popularity, Vernisazh prices are a steal and you can haggle without hesitation. Saturdays and Sundays are the best days to visit.

Russian nesting dolls in Moscow, Russia

Russian nesting dolls make the perfect souvenir, and are sold throughout Moscow, including at the Vernisazh flea market.

1 p.m. By now, you have probably got the sense that there is more to see in Moscow than time to see it. So pick what you crave most. Want more of Orthodox churches? Head to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Novodevichy Convent , which was once used by the women of the Tsar’s family. Still looking for souvenirs and gifts? Make your way to Stari Arbat (Old Arbat), a historical cobblestone street of shops and restaurants. Want to delve deeper into Russian history? Visit the State Historical Museum on the Red Square. A Cold War buff? The Bunker 42 Museum located 18 floors below Taganskaya metro was a strategic command center and an anti-nuclear shelter. A fan of Russian literature? Check out the Gogol House and the Bulgakov Museum . Want another serving of art? Try the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts or the Garage Museum .

8 p.m. End your stay in Moscow with a nice meal. Café Pushkin offers antique interiors, delicious Russian dishes, and five-star service. Even if you don’t eat here, grab a cup of the Pushkin chai, a signature Earl Grey blend with citrusy overtones. For casual fare, go to Varenichnaya (multiple locations), which has an extensive menu of Russian dishes and decor straight out of a Soviet poster. Mari Vanna (multiple locations) is another choice Russian chain.

Moscow is also a great place to try the food from other Soviet states. Head to Khachapuri to try the namesake khachapuri , Georgian stuffed-cheese bread. For authentic Uzbek plov , make a reservation at Uzbekistan . Want to keep enjoying the outdoors? Bar Strelka is a trendy spot with great views, excellent food, and a dance floor to keep the night going .
