Torner also reminds us that the body requires trace amounts of copper to maintain healthy cell growth and help avoid illnesses. In other words, you don’t need to worry if your copper Moscow Mule mugs are unlined.

Handle Strength

The handles on some Moscow Mule mugs are riveted, while others are welded. Welded handles are stronger and thus longer-lasting, but unless your mugs are going to be in heavy use — which is more likely in a bar than a home setting — you’ll be fine with either.

Second, there’s evidence to suggest that the copper interacts with the drink and intensifies the tart flavors of ginger and lime.”

It doesn’t have to be, but for the reasons above, a Moscow Mule is just better when enjoyed from a copper mug. If nothing else, enjoy it for the chill factor. 

“The thermal conductivity of copper is 20 times that of stainless steel,” says Torner.

Copper mugs should be washed by hand with warm, soapy water, then rinsed and dried thoroughly. Some mugs are dishwasher-safe, but handwashing may prolong their finish.

There are many opinions about copper coming in contact with food and beverages. And several studies indicate the use of pure copper mugs is considered a health risk.

When copper comes in contact with acidic liquids, it can dissolve and leach into the beverage. This can be a concern when drinking a Moscow Mule, which contains lime juice and alcohol and poses a risk of copper poisoning. Copper poisoning can cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness, fever, headaches and fainting.

Some states adopted the federal Food and Drug Administration’s Model Food Code, which prohibits copper from coming into contact with food and drinks with a pH level below 6.0. According to an advisory from Iowa’s Alcoholic Beverages Division , “the pH of a traditional Moscow Mule is well below 6.0.”

For this reason, it’s best to purchase copper mugs that have a nickel or stainless steel interior lining. There are plenty of lined copper mugs on the market to choose from. But if you’re not concerned about the risks and prefer the traditional 100% copper mug for your Moscow Mule, there are pure copper mugs available as well.

The traditional size for a Moscow Mule mug is 16 fluid ounces. Most mugs on the market are about 16 fluid ounces, but others range up to 20 fluid ounces if you prefer a different size.

Vintage versions of Moscow Mule mugs looked very similar to a traditional coffee mug and were made of thin, pure copper. Over time, it’s taken on a rounder look with a hammered texture and has interior lining as well. This is the most common style, but there are many other styles and shapes available now, and they even range in color and texture.

The combination of vodka, ginger beer, and lime — all mixed in an icy cold copper mug — is about as approachable as alcoholic drinks get. As with many cocktails, the Foghorn's origins are uncertain, but it's clear it's been around for a while. Some cite it was popularized by the influential  Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. The establishment operated pre-prohibition and put many now iconic cocktails on the map.

The Foghorn first appeared in print in W.J. Tarling's "Café Royal Cocktail Book,"  published in 1937 . The influential compendium focuses on drinks in the pre-World War II London drinking scene, but it's possible the Foghorn came to England via New York.

Regardless of who made the cocktail first, it has a forgiving formula that beautifully showcases gin. The pungent citrus and ginger mixer softens out the gin's boozy flavor. If you're keen on less peppery notes, consider  the difference between ginger beer and ale  — the latter will offer a smoother drinking experience. For a less spirit-forward rendition, add more ginger beer and serve the drink in a tall glass, crafting a more highball-like creation.
