New tech and ocean views: Take a look at MSC's new flagship Seascape

With its new cruise ship, MSC Cruises tried to one-up itself.

MSC Seascape, the fourth vessel in the line's Seaside class and the sister ship to MSC Seashore, which launched last year. Seascape picks up where that ship left off with some striking, high-tech upgrades.

"Technology affects everything we do, and we care a lot about innovation," MSC Cruises USA President Rubén A. Rodríguez told USA TODAY.

That is evident throughout the ship, from its decor to its onboard activities. Seascape will sail its inaugural voyage from the U.S. on Sunday. As MSC has announced plans for an increased presence in the country , Seascape will serve as its new U.S. flagship, and the 20-deck vessel's debut marks an expansion of the line's stateside footprint.

Here's what guests can expect.

Where will MSC Seascape sail?

The nearly 2,300-cabin Seascape will sail from Miami this weekend, where it will spend its inaugural season. The ship will offer week-long Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries – the region it was purpose-built for – with stops in destinations such as San Juan, Puerto Rico, Cozumel, Mexico and Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, the line's private island in the Bahamas.

What will MSC Seascape be like on board?

As its name would suggest, Seascape maximizes proximity to the water, with close to 140,000 square feet of outdoor space, Rodríguez said. Seascape also has a promenade measuring more than 1,700 feet long, where guests can get closer to the sea.

Like Seashore, the ship also pays homage to New York City – where many MSC guests come from – through design features like an LED wall that spans four decks featuring the skyline that changes from day to night in an entertainment and retail area named Times Square. There is also a replica of the Statue of Liberty standing nearly 10-feet high in the casino, according to the line's website .

Seascape also features a number of high-tech new features, including Robotron, a robotic arm ride where guests can choose their accompanying soundtrack and intensity level, and the arm moves in time with the music. Passengers can also try their hand at piloting an aircraft - from the safety of the ship – via a new VR flight simulator, or hit the road in VR motorcycles.

The ship has plenty of more traditional amenities too. There are six pools, including an infinity pool at the aft, a spa, and 30 restaurants, bars and lounges, like specialty venue Butcher's Cut and the Sky Bar, which has a view of the ship's glass-bottom Bridge of Sighs, according to MSC's website. Seascape also features two 20-person infinity hot tubs on either side of the deck 8 promenade.

What else do travelers need to know about MSC Seascape?

A week-long round-trip cruise from Miami departing April 9, with stops in Cozumel, George Town, Grand Cayman and more, starts at $1,136 based on double occupancy, according to the line's website . That includes most food and drinks such as regular coffee, tea and water.

Each MSC ship is designed with accessibility in mind, Rodríguez said. The entire fleet features accessible cabins, according to its website , though numbers vary by ship. Passengers can notify the line of any requirements via an online form (you can find by clicking here)  or available through accredited travel agencies. However, the line asks guests to submit the form when they book their cruise, or no less than two business days before their sailing at the latest.

The incident happened on Saturday, according to local US media reports , and the event is being held by some as further evidence of the unfortunate impact on sea life that large vessels can have.

The 44ft-long whale corpse was an endangered sei whale and was caught on the ship’s bow when it arrived at the Port of Brooklyn, according to a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration fisheries spokesperson, Andrea Gomez.

The boat involved was the Meraviglia, which docked in New York before sailing on a journey to ports in New England and Canada. It is owned by Geneva-based MSC Cruises .

“We immediately notified the relevant authorities, who are now conducting an examination of the whale,” officials with the cruise line said in a statement, who added that the company had regulations in place to avoid collisions with whales and other animals at sea.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of any marine life,” the statement said.

The whale is now the subject of a necropsy to try and determine how it died, notably if it was already dead when hit by the cruise ship. Sei whales are one of the largest whales and are a protected species.

Thanks for the uploads. This are great infos. I wonder why MSC is not providing this infos on their webside. BUT are this menus now after the updates from 27. February 2023? The prices changed then and also the assembling of the drinks in the individual package changed as well. Just wanted to make sure if this menus here are from after the 27th Feb 2023? Thanks Tom

MSC Cruises adds attraction Royal Caribbean, Carnival don't offer

M SC Cruises has been expanding its presence in Florida, steadily adding more ships including some of its higher-end hardware. The company isn't as well known as its rivals including Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and Norwegian.

With cruises in the Caribbean selling very well, Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and Norwegian have been able to raise prices. In addition, Royal Caribbean and Carnival sell a la carte cruises with drinks and internet costing extra, at least on their namesake brands.

MSC has generally been offering lower prices and offers packages that include its mid-range beverage package, which includes well liquor cocktails, as well as multiple wines and beers. It's generally cheaper to get on an MSC ship with an adult beverage package and a single internet device than it is to get on any Royal Caribbean, Carnival, or Norwegian ship with similar add-ons.   

Having sailed MSC multiple times, I've found lower prices to be its strongest offering. The food, at least in the free venues, has been inferior to Royal Caribbean, the company I sail with most often. Specialty dining has generally been better and the crew has the same dedication and friendliness offered by its rivals.

MSC Cruises does seem to listen to complaints because, over three sailings across the past two years, my most recent one seemed to address the food issues. The MDR offerings were still well below Royal Caribbean, but they're now closer to what Carnival serves.

MSC Cruises has a new U.S. flagship planned

MSC Cruises has been building its latest megaship, MSC World America, which will sail out of Miami. The new ship is a not so subtle attempt to rival Royal Caribbean's Oasis and Icon-class ships as well as Carnival's flagship Excel-class ships. 

To help its new ship stand out, MSC will debut a striking new onboard attraction.

"Cliffhanger, the only over-water swing ride at sea, will debut exclusively aboard MSC World America when the ship enters service in April 2025. The ride structure will tower above the new U.S. flagship’s top deck, nestled in the heart of the ship’s Family Aventura district and beckoning thrill seekers who want a rush of excitement," the cruise line shared. 

The biggest challenge may be meeting passenger demand as the ride has a very limited capacity.

"Cliffhanger’s four seats start off close to the deck before powered arms lift them into the starting position — up and out over the edge of the ship. From there, riders are propelled back and forth, high above the waterline and dangling 160 feet above the ocean below. The one-of-a-kind, edge-of-your-seat thrill ride will have guests feeling the wind in their hair as their view oscillates between the water below and the sky above," MSC Cruises added.

MSC expands its Florida presence

MSC Cruises will sail out of both Miami and Port Canaveral (as well as New York) for the summer 2025 season. That will include MSC World America sailing out of Miami which will also serve as home to MSC Seascape. 

"As the second in MSC Cruises’ trailblazing World Class, the ship will be MSC Cruises’ largest U.S.-based vessel and redefine the cruise experience for her guests. The LNG-powered MSC World America will offer 7-night sailings departing on Saturdays to both eastern and western Caribbean ports, including San Juan, Puerto Rico; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico; Isla de Roatan, Honduras; and Ocean Cay," the cruise line shared.

MSC Seascape will sail from Miami offering a mix of 7-night itineraries in the eastern and western Caribbean along with new 3- and 4-night sailings to The Bahamas and Ocean Cay. That puts the ship in competition with some of Royal Caribbean top-tier ships which are sailing short cruises that stop at its Perfect Day at CocoCay provate island. 

The cruise line seems to be following a similar playbook to Royal Caribbean.

"This marks the first time a Seaside EVO Class ship will offer short cruises from Miami. Select 3- and 4-night itineraries will stay overnight at Ocean Cay," according to the cruise line.

MSC Seascape's sister ship, MSC Seashore will spend the summer of 2025 in Port Canaveral.

"From Port Canaveral, MSC Seashore will sail a range of itinerary options, including short 3- and 4-night escapes to The Bahamas. Some of the ship’s 7-night itineraries start out with two days at Ocean Cay followed by stops in Cozumel and Costa Maya," MSC Cruises shared.

Two ships will offer sailings out of PortMiami: MSC Magnifica  with three to seven-night sailings including to the Key West (Florida), Costa Maya and Cozumel (Mexico), Isla de Roatan (Honduras), Belize City (Belize), Nassau and Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve (Bahamas). Meanwhile, MSC Seascape  will offer seven-night sailings, calling at destinations including San Juan (Puerto Rico), George Town (Cayman Islands), Puerto Plata (Dominican Republic), Ocho Rios (Jamaica), Cozumel (Mexico), and Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. MSC Meraviglia  will set sail from the iconic New York, with seven-night itineraries including port of calls in Port Canaveral, Nassau and Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. MSC Seashore  will also offer the chance to visit the Caribbean’s prized gems with three to seven-night sailings from Port Canaveral to destinations including Nassau, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, Costa Maya and Cozumel.

WINTER 2024/2025 SAILINGS For sun seekers looking for a winter escape, six ships will offer unforgettable itineraries from three to 10 nights from Miami, New York and Orlando and Martinique . Three ships will offer sailings out of PortMiami : MSC Divina  will offer three to four-night itineraries including to the Bahamas with visits to Nassau and Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. Her longer sailings will offer 10-night itineraries including to Aruba, Curaçao and Dominican Republic. MSC Seascape will offer seven-night cruises to the Eastern Caribbean including the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, and to the Western Caribbean including to Jamaica, Cayman Islands, Mexico, and Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. Lastly, MSC Seaside  will offer captivating seven-night cruises, alternating between the Eastern Caribbean including to The Bahamas, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic and the Western Caribbean including Mexico, Honduras or Belize, and The Bahamas itineraries including Ocean cay MSC Marine Reserve. MSC Meraviglia will homeport in the world-famous city of New York, with itineraries of seven-nights including visits to Orlando, Nassau, The Bahamas and Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. She will also offer itineraries of 10 to 11-nights including visits in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Sint Maarten. From Port Canaveral, MSC Seashore will offer three to seven-night itineraries with port of calls including in Costa Maya, Cozumel, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve and Nassau. MSC Virtuosa  will offer seven-night sailings from Fort de France (Martinique) to destinations including Philipsburg (Sint Maarten), St. John’s (Antigua), Pointe-a-Pitre (Guadeloupe), and Bridgetown (Barbados).

OCEAN CAY MSC MARINE RESERVE All four ships sailing the Caribbean this Summer 2024 and five ships sailing this Winter 2024/2025 season will visit Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve , MSC Cruises’ stunning private island located in The Bahamas , dedicated to the restoration of marine resources and the ongoing conservation of marine life. With more than two miles of pristine sand across eight world class beaches, this tropical paradise invites guests to discover the island’s natural beauty and vibrant spirit of the Bahamas, with plenty of areas to soak up the sun and enjoy endless activities on island, while surrounded by sweeping vistas of crystal blue waters. The island is also home to the MSC Foundation’s Super Coral Programme, which aims to help restore the island’s coral reefs and contribute to conservation knowledge and initiatives worldwide. Over the next 12 months, MSC Cruises will make enhancements to the island including guest amenities and experiences to support the island’s future growth plans. The new enhancements will include expanded excursion centres to support watersport activities and island tours, additional food and beverage facilities including a second food hall and larger bars. Moscow is a Volga River cruise port, Russia's capital and largest city (population over 12,2 million, metro 17 million). Moscow City covers a total area of approx 2610 km 2 (970 mi2). By population, the city is ranked the world's 14th largest. Moscow is one of the Russian Federation's all 3 federal cities - together with St Petersburg and Sevastopol .

Being Russian Federation's capital, Moscow is a major economic, political, scientific and cultural center, as well as Europe's biggest city.

According to Forbes 2013, Moscow has been ranked as the 9th most expensive city in the world by Mercer and has one of the largest urban economies, being ranked as an alpha global city according to Globalization and World Cities Research Network. It is also one of the fastest-growing tourist destinations in the world according to MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index. Moscow is the northernmost and the coldest megacity and metropolis on the Earth. It's home to Ostankino Tower, the tallest free-standing European structure; the Federation Tower, the tallest European skyscraper; and the Moscow International Business Center. 

Moscow is situated on Moskva River in the Central Federal District of European Russia, which makes it the most populated inland city in the world. Moscow city is well known for architecture, particularly its historic buildings like Saint Basil's Cathedral. With over 40% of its territory covered by greenery, it's one of the greenest capitals and major cities in Europe and the world. Moscow is the seat of power of the Russian Government, being the site of Moscow Kremlin, a medieval city-fortress that is now the residence of the President of Russia. Moscow Kremlin and Red Square are among the several World Heritage Sites in the city. 

Moscow has 2 passenger terminals, North River Terminal (Rechnoy vokzal) and South River Terminal. The regular ship routes and cruises along Moskva and Oka rivers are used mostly for entertainment. North River Terminal (1937-built) is currently the main hub for long-range routes along the river. There are 3 freight ports that serve Moscow.

In late-July 2021 the city announced plans to incorporate a fleet (unspecified number) of fully electric passenger ferries into its public transportation network from summer 2022, the goal being to reduce the dependence on cars.

• The boats are designed with length ~22 m (72 ft), passenger capacity 42, modern amenities (Wi-Fi, USB charging points, tables for working commuters), spaces for storing scooters and bicycles.
• Moscow Transport confirmed that two routes (with max daily capacity ~16,000 passengers) have already been mapped out.
• Passengers will be able to pay via bank cards, the city’s Troika card (smart card for travel by any public transportation) or biometric payment cards. Those with monthly/yearly public transit tickets will use the boats at no extra cost.
• The new electric ferry service is up to 5 times faster (in comparison to other city public transports) and ~2 times faster than by car.

Moscow cruise terminal

Moscow's cruise terminal is called North River Terminal or River Station  ("Rechnoy Vokzal" / "речной вокзал").

The terminal was opened in 1937 and is one of 2 passenger terminals (the other being South River Terminal) of the city's river transport. North River Terminal is the main hub for long-range (including cruise) shipping routes. 

South River Terminal (above photo) was opened in 1985.
