Quotes about the song

Enya: "When we came to ‘Cursum Perficio’, we wanted to leave the voices bold and up-front, as in a choral piece. We knew we couldn’t really adapt the Gaelic or the English, and we knew it would work well with the Latin. Actually, we really don’t mind what language it’s in, as long as it complements the music." A Mystic Named Eithne Ni Bhraonain, CD Review, 1989, enyabookofdays.com
Enya: "The sound was more important than the text. The choir is important. (..) ‘Cursum Perficio’ comes from a documentary about Marilyn Monroe. It means ‘Here ends my journey’ and that saying was engraved in the entrance of her last house. But that’s how it often happens. Those two words haunted me for weeks and than I finally used them in a song." Interview in Belgium, 1988 Enya unofficial homepage (no longer online)

When the moon can’t find herself

Go when the moon can’t find herself, when she has given herself to the colour of night and only the edge of her eyes are seen, only that thin sliver in the skies.

Choose that thin moon, for no other light disturbs you on this island.

After that, It is stars, all stars.

Cursum Perficio Lyrics

Enya - Cursum Perficio Lyrics

Watermark (With Translation) Cursum Perficio

Cursum perficio. I am making an end to my course. Verbum sapienti: A word to the wise: quo plus habent, the more have eo plus cupiunt. the more they want. Post nubila, Phoebus After the clouds, Phoebus (1) Iternum Over and over again (2)

Phoebus was one of the names for the Sun god, which may be more famous as Apollo (Greek). It is notable that the Sun is a male. The word 'iternum' does not exist; it could either be a misspelling for 'eternum' (eternal), which is unlikely since it is very rare that an adjective be used as an adverb, or for 'iterum' (again and again) which is in fact an adverb and makes a little more sense (!). The meaning of 'cursum perficio' is actually best explained Enya was inspired by these words she saw on Marylin Monroe's last house, where they were taken to mean "my journey ends here". It is a rather "free" translation, but it's probably a very good way to convey the meaning of Latin, which has a way of saying things that is very distant from modern-day English. The fact that those words turned out to be prophetical only adds to the power of the song.

UPDATED: Inside Marilyn Monroe’s Dreamy Final Home in Brentwood

September 12, 2023 Update:

As most of you know now, Marilyn’s Brentwood home was scheduled for demolition but it has been reported by multiple outlets – The LA Times , Vanity Fair , People , The Guardian – that Marilyn’s final home has been saved. At least for now. Follow The Hollywood Home on Instagram for my latest updates on Marilyn. I will also update this post frequently in the coming weeks as we learn about what we can do to hopefully secure this home protected status as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument or a Mills Act property. Stay tuned!

Friday, April 21 2017 Update – Marilyn’s final home in Brentwood has returned to the market. Asking price is $6,900,000 .

Original September 21, 2016 post below:

It was the first and last home legendary Hollywood bombshell Marilyn Monroe ever owned. 12305 Fifth Helena Drive in Brentwood is a dreamy Spanish hacienda that still stands today. According to Monroe biographers, Marilyn was urged by her psychologist to “put down roots” after three failed marriages to James Dougherty, Joe DiMaggio, and Arthur Miller. It is rumored she fell in love with the garden and would often spend calming afternoons there with her poodle. She bought the home in 1962 for $75,000. It last sold in 2012 for $5.1 million.

Considered a modest home at the time, it was all Monroe could then afford, and, besides, she was enchanted with the vintage hacienda. According to the biography Goddess , Marilyn cried when signing the final papers because she never imagined she’d be purchasing a home without a husband. She paid a $40,000 deposit and began making $320 monthly mortgage payments in March. Eunice Murray, who was Marilyn’s live-in housekeeper, recalled that Monroe studied and memorized every detail of the home, brick by brick. She loved the house’s simplicity and its lived-in aura.

Before her untimely death she made a trip to Mexico to hand-pick authentic Mexican furniture, art, tapestries and tiles for her home. Some of the tiles are still in place today. When Marilyn bought the house, it had three bedrooms and two baths plus a detached guest house. Today, the guest house has been connected to the main house, the kitchen has been expanded and several rooms have been added to the back, expanding the home’s square footage considerably.

As you can see by the photos above and below the gorgeous Spanish tiles have remained while the dark wood paneling and wall-to-wall carpeting has been eliminated.

It is said Marilyn used one bedroom for herself, installed her housekeeper-companion in a second bedroom, and the third bedroom was used as a “telephone room,” a must-have, surely, for all girls in the 1960s.

Marilyn threw herself into making her house a home. Besides the trip to Mexico, she planted an herb garden with lemon trees and flowering plants  and the last check she ever wrote was for a white chest of drawers. She installed a plaque on the doorway of the house with the Latin phrase, “Cursum Perficio” which translates to “My Journey Ends Here.”

Marilyn’s sunroom remains nearly untouched besides an added bookshelf.

Her bedroom opened right onto the backyard and the kidney-shaped swimming pool, which her biographers claim she never used.

Although her life was tragically cut short, Marilyn had at last landed in a place where she could feel at home. Many of the lemon trees and herb gardens Marilyn planted are said to still be thriving on the property.

Pretty! This has been a really wonderful post. Thank you for supplying this info.

$75,000 in 1962 money translates to $642,435 in 2020 money

' src=

Cursum Perficio was part of the property when she purchased it in 1961. She spent a considerable amount of time updating the kitchen, which then had a copper hood, and copper pots and pans. The hood on her bedroom fireplace was also copper. Her bedroom shower was opposite of the windows where the sink once stood and her door would have been parallel to the showerhead wall. The last photo shows her being playful, on the Spanish style chair with the lime green felt, during an interview, she reluctantly agreed to. On the morning of her death, she had been planting in the garden. When the house was remodeled; circa the 1970s, by Hill Street Blues Actress, “owner at the time”, an elaborate surveillance system was uncovered consisting of devices far advanced for the 1960s, correlation to the governments high tech systems of that time. Ms. Monroe was in fact Murdered. No evidence of her prints or any prints were ever found in her own home, an indication of CIA cleanup and coverup. Thank you for sharing.

' src=

Gorgeous photos! So happy her beautiful, sweet and innocent soul is being remembered for what she always wanted. Which was a home and to be loved. Thrilled to hear her lemon trees and herb garden are thriving today.

' src=

There’s always evidence that they don’t think about. Or else they would open up the house for me to investigate AND get out. They obviously think that the right to bear witness doesn’t apply to them. Gives the plausible cause of felony tresspassing to cover up what’s been solved. Still, there’s who, why, and how still waiting to come out.

' src=

Thank you for showing Marilyn’s last home, a personal look to a cosy perfect Home …She was a amazing complicated person due to her insecurity from her childhood and to see and imagine her in her calm Garden on her last day, is a slight joy! She may have had an intuition of her future as somebody wrote these words above QUOTE … She installed a plaque on the doorway of the house with the Latin phrase, “Cursum Perficio” which translates to “My Journey Ends Here.” So Appt! Marilyn RIP

' src=

Monroe was not murdered; she died because of miscommunication between her physician and her psychiatrist. She was never murdered – by anyone – and after 60 years, there is no proof and never will there be proof – of any murder.

She accidentally overdosed on barbiturates including chloral hydrate which should not have been taken with the Nembutals. She accidentally swallowed too many and died over a period of time.

Demolition of Marilyn Monroe’s house halted after widespread outrage

Los Angeles officials block destruction of property where movie star died, and consider it for historic preservation

The final home of Marilyn Monroe – and the only residence she ever owned independently – will remain standing for now after Los Angeles officials intervened to block the property’s demolition.

The news that the new owners of 12305 Fifth Helena Drive, where Monroe died at age 36, filed for demolition permits had attracted widespread outrage. Los Angeles city councilwoman Traci Park said she received hundreds of calls urging her to save the Spanish colonial-style house in the city’s Brentwood neighborhood.

“Unfortunately, the department of building and safety issued a demolition permit before my team and I could fully intervene and get this issue resolved,” Park said at a news conference last week, adding that there was a need for “urgent action”.

Marilyn Monroe sitting on a bench.

Park introduced a motion to initiate consideration of the home for historic preservation, and the council unanimously voted to move forward, prompting the city’s building department to revoke the demolition permit. The motion also prevents any major alterations to the property while the city reviews its potential status as a landmark.

“This will be the first step in ensuring that we can protect this home against demolition,” Park said.

The property, which features a guest house and swimming pool, was purchased in 2017 for $7.25m by Glory of the Snow LLC, then managed by a hedge fund executive, the Los Angeles Times reported. It was sold to the Glory of the Snow Trust for $8.35m earlier this year.

It’s unclear what the mysterious new owner intends to do with the property. The owner did not submit any plans indicating what their plans are for the land, Park said at last week’s press conference.

Monroe purchased the single-story, 2,900-sq-ft (270-sq-meter) house in the early 1960s for $75,000 after the end of her third marriage to playwright Arthur Miller, according to the Times. It was the only residence the actress, who spent part of her childhood in an orphanage and foster care, ever independently owned.

The screen legend, star of such films as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Some Like It Hot and The Misfits, was found dead in a bedroom of the home in August 1962. The cause of death was ruled to be acute barbiturate poisoning.

Monroe had named the home Cursum Perficio, a Latin phrase meaning “My journey ends here”, which adorned tiles on the home’s front porch.

after newsletter promotion

The global concern about the home reaffirms its significance, Park said.

“For people all over the world, Marilyn Monroe was more than just a movie icon. Her story, from her challenging childhood growing up in orphanages and foster homes to becoming a global sensation, is a shining example of what it means to overcome adversity,” she said.

Marilyn Monroe And Her Last House (PHOTOS)

Marilyn Monroe's influence on real estate goes beyond the grave -- or the crypt rather. The Brentwood house that she died in 50 years ago on August 5 became a hot property literally overnight.

On the day after she died, it is said her estate received a half-dozen offers to purchase the home. At the time of her death -- ruled an accidental drug overdose ( one expert ruled out Monroe committing suicide ) -- she had owned the 2,600-square-foot Spanish hacienda for about six months, having paid about $90,000. She carried a loan on it and punched the mortgage clock to the tune of $320 a month. Despite a somewhat unclear ownership paper trail, we know that the last time the house changed hands was in 2010, when the purchase price was in the vicinity of $3.5 million. (The photos below were taken at that time.)

The one-story white stucco house was built in 1929. When Marilyn Monroe bought it, it had three bedrooms and two baths plus a detached guest house. The legendary actress used one bedroom for herself, installed her housekeeper-companion Eunice Murray in a second bedroom and the third bedroom was used as a "telephone room," according to various reports. There was, and still is, a kidney-shaped swimming pool in the backyard that Monroe reportedly never used.

Reports say that Monroe threw herself into making her house a home. Shortly before her death, she traveled to Mexico to buy authentic furnishings and art work -- some of which were found still in their shipping boxes when they found her body. The last check she ever wrote was for a white chest of drawers .

She even had an herb garden planted on the gated property that sits at the end of a cul-de-sac. Much has been made of the fact that she installed a plaque on the house with the Latin phrase "Cursum Perficio" translating to "My Journey Ends Here."

Here's What Happened To The House Marilyn Monroe Died In

S itting in Brentwood, Los Angeles, 12305 5th Helena Drive is no ordinary address. The property at this postal code belonged to none other than the iconic Marilyn Monroe , whose legacy still continues to thrive over 60 years after her untimely passing at the above address. Approximately half a century later, Monroe's former home sold on August 18, 2023 for $8,350,000, and was set to be destroyed by its new owners. However, the four-bed, two-bath property narrowly escaped demolition with the help of the Los Angeles City Council.

Without the intervention of the city council, the place where Monroe spent the last few months of her life would have been gone forever, as would a slice of Californian history. The actor first purchased the property on Helena Drive in early 1962 for $75,000 after her split from Arthur Miller. It was the first property she owned by herself (without a spouse or partner), and she reputedly paid for half of the home with cash and mortgaged the other half.

She Didn't Get To Spend Much Time In Her Forever Home

5th Helena Drive was designed to look like a Spanish-style hacienda. In the book, "Cursum Perficio: Marilyn Monroe's Brentwood Hacienda," Monroe called the house a "fortress where I can feel safe from the world." "Cursum Perficio" — a Latin phrase that translates to "My journey ends here" — is how Monroe referred to her home, even having the phrase carved into the front porch tiles. Tragically, these words became true — Monroe's happiness in her home was not to last.  She was found dead at the property just a few months later in August 1962 at age 36.

After Monroe's death, the fate of the property took a few turns. It was owned by actor Veronica Hamel, who intriguingly discovered surveillance and bugging equipment in areas of the roof and the walls of the property. Though nothing has been confirmed, the equipment could very much have been installed during the time period when Monroe was associated with the Kennedy family, namely John F. Kennedy. Director Michael Richie also purchased the house in 1994, though it is unknown when he sold it.

The Iconic Property Was Almost Destroyed

Fast forward all the way to 2023, and the property was snapped up by Glory of the Snow LLC, which then sold it to the Trust of the same name. The latter then shockingly applied for a demolition permit to destroy Marilyn Monroe's former home. Thankfully, as mentioned, the Los Angeles City Council managed to temporarily halt the plans in 2023. In a press conference , council representative Stacey Segarra-Bohlinger stated, "Preserving our history is a dignity that we as Angelenos have. It is our duty and our honor to preserve and protect historical monuments. Developers are destroying our city for personal gain. It is a disgrace and should not be allowed." The council additionally voted in favor of putting the home forth for consideration to become a historical and cultural monument.

Intriguingly, the situation does not seem to be as simple as it first appears. Although nothing was confirmed, there were rumors that the couple who owned the property next door to Monroe's had plans to build one large property on the planned vacant lot. These rumors sparked when Esotouric's overhead film footage showed that the wall dividing the properties had been taken down. Monroe's home is safe for now, but what might happen to it in the future is another issue entirely.

Do you have a favorite Latin phrase?

I was just thinking of how quite common it is to use Latin phrases (e.g. the a priori in the Words thread), and thought it would be fun to make a list of Latin phrases that you tend to use...

I enjoy throwing out some of the following:

* Ad astra per aspra - rough translation (I think): To the stars through difficulties. (That was my mantra when I was a competitive swimmer for many years.)

* Cursom Perficio - My Journey Ends Here. Saw this on a door mat which I thought was cool.

* Carpe Dormio - Seize the nap. (tee hee)

And then are all those Latin-based abbreviations in the medical field: TPN, NPO, PRN...

What about you? Do you have a favorite Latin phrase?

Carpe Diem Seize the day

Ad Libitum As you wish or as desired

"Forsan et haec olim meminisse juvabit." Translation: Perhaps one day it will be pleasant to remember even these things. Or, loosely, "Maybe we'll laugh about this one day." The famous consolation Aeneas gave to his comrades during the storm in the "Aeneid" by Vergil. Nowadays it can be shortened just to "Forsan et haec" and will get the point across.

Sempre ubi sub ubi - Always where under where.

I was about 9, there were gales of laughter from my older cousins.

Amor vincit omnia - Love conquers all

Non illegitamus carborundum. Dog Latin for "Don't let the bastards wear you down."

My father always reckoned his motto was:

Nemo me impuni lacessit (no-one harms me (or mine) and gets away with it.)

My university motto was:

Rerum congnoscere causas (to know the reason/cause for all things)

I really like:

Noli me tangere for I am Caesar's

leel - that was the motto of the boat my former brother-in-law sailed on. When I had a particularly difficult shift supervisor at work a long time ago, my kids found a mug with that on it. I used it for my coffee at work. I really enjoyed putting it right next to her at the nurses' station - she had no clue.

I still have the coffee mug, and she left the unit and then the hospital waaaaaaay before I did...at the "request" of the administration.

Gallia in tre partes divisa est. Gaul is divided into three parts. An account of Caesar's Gallic Wars. This phrase was from my first Latin school book. We had to use the boy's exam curriculum and learnt a lot about Roman warfare! I believe this has been changed. It was pointless. When I left school, I used to mutter it to myself when I took on any new and challenging project.

Leel, I second that choice. My father had a wonderfully ornate poster in his office with that saying !

my journey ends here in latin

I'm not so fond of Latin phrases.

I think Latin is frequently used, particularly in Law, to give an unnecessary "gloss" to the situation, and to impress with erudition. My wife, who is a solicitor, tells me that the Latin phrases like "mens rea" and "actus reus" are very precise in Law, and the translations lose that precise meaning. Personally, I think that's just a cop-out. Precision isn't lost in the USA, and they don't use any Latin phrases in Law at all.

I once had a letter from a court telling me a speeding case was adjourned sine die. That was it - one sentence, and the important part of it was written in Latin. I was fine with it - I found out what it meant. But I would have felt sorry for someone who wouldn't have even known where to start.

And for those who don't know - sine die means "to another day".

This is my favourite use of Latin in literature.

Dulce et Decorum Est

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks, Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge, Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs And towards our distant rest began to trudge. Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind; Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots Of disappointed shells that dropped behind.

GAS! Gas! Quick, boys!-- An ecstasy of fumbling, Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time; But someone still was yelling out and stumbling And floundering like a man in fire or lime.-- Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams, before my helpless sight, He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams you too could pace Behind the wagon that we flung him in, And watch the white eyes writhing in his face, His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin; If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs, Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,-- My friend, you would not tell with such high zest To children ardent for some desperate glory, The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est Pro patria mori.

Wilfred Owen

I like sub rosa, meaning under the rose, and signifying secret or confidential. As a collector of heirloom roses, and a lover of things mysterious and beautiful, it seems so right to me that roses are associated with secrecy.

Reading a Spenser novel - he referred to some pro bono work.

That'll teach me to make the brave assertion that American lawyers don't use Latin.

The motto from my college days was the philosopher Descartes' Cogito Ergo Sum "I think therefore I am". I often wondered why it couldn't be used the other way round "I am therefore I think".

I had 3 years of Latin in high school. At first, I dreaded it, but later on, learned to actually enjoy the language and its complexities.

Here are some more of my favorites:

Tempus fugit.

Terra incognita vs. terra firma

Ave atque vale.

Magna est veritas.

And, in particular, certain flower names, e.g. Vinca Major vs. Vinca Minor.

As as avid gardener, I have many times regretted that I chose to study French instead of Latin as a high school student. I did go to France once. No one understood a word I mutilated. I was able to decipher historical markers, but since they were often available in translation anyway, I'm not sure my long-ago years of French with poor Madame McLauglin did me any good.

However, Latin I would use daily.

I was just thinking about why I picked French. My third choice Spanish would also have been much more useful to me than French, as it turns out.

It was all because of Jane Eyre. Even back in those days it was one of my favorite books. It was filled with French phrases because of little Adele Varins, and the edition I had did not translate them. I do believe that I took French so I could read the French phrases in novels.

Lemonhead--TPN, to me, means total parenteral nutrition (complete nutrition given by IV). Is there also a Latin meaning?

Annpan--"Gallia in tre partes divisa est" was the first sentence of my 1958 Latin I text book!

Dedtired--Mea culpa! (Through my fault!) My brother and I, in my hat and wearing a dress, used to show up at the 11 AM Mass at the last possible moment before it began, so we "had to" stand in the back of the church. As soon as we heard, "Ite missa est" ("Go, the Mass is ended," in Church Latin) we booked out of there, free for the rest of that Sunday. Oh, yeah, we always brought the bulletin to prove to my mother we really had attended church. She went to an early Mass so she could go home and have dinner ready at noon. Nancy

Nancy, we may have had the same primer. I cannot recall the name of the author/s but mine was a worn copy from a set that was handed out to our class in 1949. They were probably printed before WW2 judging by the good paper and thick covers. We were told to be careful with them and not mark them, even with pencil. I grew up in a time when books were precious items and I still find it hard to throw one away! Have a look at the booksellers sites and see how old books, even with torn and browning pages are still being sold. So I am not the only one to hang on to decrepit paperbacks etc.!

Rouan's and my mother went to Girls' Latin School in Boston (now part of Latin Academy, a public college prep high school) back in the era of World War II. She used to quote "Gallia in tre partes divisa est" as a memorable Latin phrase. I never studied Latin, but I think she told us that it means "All Gaul is divided into three parts". Caesar's Commentaries? Do I remember that right?

Rosefolly, one of my best friends in the world went to Girls Latin, probably class of 1963. Her first name is Carmela. Any chance you crossed paths?

I studied French for five years, but since I never used it, it's mostly gone. However, on my recent trip to Paris I was surprised at how much was lurking in the back of my brain.

my journey ends here in latin

I wouldn't call it a favourite phrase but it is one I'll never forget because it was the only joke my Latin teacher ever made and he thought it hilarious: "Quidquid id est timeo feminas et oscula dantes", a pun on Vergil's "Quidquid id est timeo Danaos et dona ferentes". When I check this phrase now I notice that my teacher didn't even make it up himself. The class didn't enjoy it much.

Caesar's De bello Gallico must be one of the most boring books in the history of literature.

Dedtired, my mother married and moved to Pennsylvania in the early 1950's, so I never lived in Boston. Girls Latin, like Girls High in Philadelphia, was one of those superb public college prep schools that have since gone co-ed. When they did so, something wonderful was lost. I have been told by several people who attended such schools that in the absence of male students, girls become much more competitive scholars.

My school was co-ed but classes were separated into boys only and girls only because of scheduling problems for the very old gym that didn't have separate locker rooms. Three girls in my class became engineers, still an unusual career choice for women in late 50'ies Sweden. I remember that the math lessons were very lively and I think boys would have had a hampering effect on the discussions.

From a plaque on my desk, handed down to me by a retiring boss long, long ago:

Aequalis faecibus, aliorsum dies.

Roughly translated: "same 'stuff', different day"

Veer, I suspect it isn't "Sum, ergo cogito" because too many people are, but don't think :-( I've only picked up bits and pieces of Latin over the years but find it helps a lot in understanding other languages, especially when travelling in Europe. I studied French in high school and while I've never really used it since, similarly it has helped me make sense of other languages when travelling in Europe and mostly in Viet Nam (where you can see the French roots of so many Vietnamese words).

lauramarie_gardener

Actually, Martin Z. -- Latin is used in American law quite a lot.

For instance - "pro bono" = "for the good" -- a lawyer working for free for a good cause "nolo contendere" = "no contest" "a priori" = something to do w/ statistics? "et alia" = "and the rest"? or something like that "res judicata" = you'll have to look this one up

And MANY, MANY "ad infinitum" more!

BTW - If a person is served w/ legal notice and is poor and uneducated -- in U.S. they can call the Bar Association and other legal advisors FREE of charge. I have done it myself and been greatly gratified at the patience, thoroughness, and ultimately, the accuracy of all the advice given by these gratis (Latin again!) services.

P.S. I once did freelance work at law firms (U.S.A.) so am familiar w/ the abundance of Latin usage -- even though may not always be able to translate!

lemonhead101 Original Author

You are correct that TPN means "total parental nutrition" (or similar). I made a mistake lumping the accronym w the other ones. For some reason, I was thinking it was latin, but clearly not..!

Earlier in the thread, we were talking about girls' only schools. I was fortunate enough to go to a single sex school for my whole schoolgirl career (from aged 4-19) and loved it. However, at the time, I took it all for granted (as kids do), and it's only in looking back, that I realise the opportunity that I was offered. Academics were not my strong suit until I worked out to study at univ., so I missed that boat in earlier school; however, I do have a strong set of friends with whom I am still in touch.

Looking back, my school seemed very restrictive in everything, but after I had read its hundred-year history book (during Xmas), I really understood how forward it was with the serious things. Yes, you had to have certain coloured socks and wear a hat and have indoor shoes and outdoor shoes etc. but it was really a great school otherwise. (And I actually quite liked all the rules.)

Enya connects her song, "Cursum Perficio" to Marylin Monroe. The words cursum perficio were written on inlaid tiles at the front door of the last home Monroe lived in, and where she died. The tile were there when Monroe purchased the home, which, as it turned out, was quite prophetic given the translation being, "my journey ends here."
