best of ocho rios-NCL Cruiseline Excursion

In the past I have always booked private excursion and not gone with the masses from the cruise ship on an excursion. The best of Ocho Rios tour with NCL had everything I wanted to see/do, so i gave it a shot. Boy was i impressed and surprised! After leaving the ship we were escorted to our line with all the people going on the excursion. Much to my surprise, we were grouped into a party of only 10 people and escorted to our own air conditioned van. Complete with driver and private tour guide. We left the port promptly and headed for a beautiful drive into fern gully. Next stop was at Shaw Park, here again we stayed with our group of 10 and had our own private guided tour. Shaw Park is breath taking and our guide was great! The tour here ended at a snack shop where you could purchase a Red Stripe or soda. Our next stop was shopping, our guide told us where to buy cheap t-shirt & trinkets. Off we went, heading to Dunns River Falls. Here we were joined with another group, so about 20 people to climb. We meet our guides. John lead us up the falls and Ronny was the videographer. They no longer carry your camera's for you! Unless you have a waterproof one, leave it in the locked bus or with your NCL tour guide. It WILL get wet!!!! The climb takes about an hour and you must wear H2o shoes. (They rent shoes for $7 and have lockers for a fee) If you have bad balance or knees, I highly suggest you sit this one out. Dunn's is beautiful and challenging. At the end of your climb you are asked to leave a tip for you guide.PLEASE LEAVE A TIP! This is the only way these people make any money. You are then asked if you want to buy a video of your experience for $40. I passed. You don't even get to see what's on it. They have snacks & beverages in the courtyard once you finish. BEWARE...when you leave back to the bus, you will walk through the craft area, very high pressure sales, especially right at the exit door. You will be offered a "free" people set. Nothing is free! Keep walking and tell them no thanks politely. This is the end of the tour. You board your van and head to the port. If you like, your guides might even drop you off at the beach or shopping center for a little extra green. I was very surprised how well organized and well timed this tour was! It was a great experience and we never saw any other groups from our ship. Our tour guides were friendly and informative. We were told the history of the country amoung other interesting facts! Tip: This tour really moves along and there isn't time allocated for lunch. You might want to bring a sandwich with you or choose to eat after the tour. Finding some local jerk chicken is a must!!! Side Note.....People who are on the street dressed up and putting on shows are expected to be tipped. DO NOT be a rude traveler and enjoy their show, smile and walk away. You are disrespecting their craft, time, and their livelyhood. PLEASE TIP. Jamacia is poor country, and this is a way for some to be able to bring food to thier families.

Hi Marvyn, words cannot describe how much we enjoyed our day in Jamaica! Since then, every night when I go to sleep I think about what a wonderful day we had. Our driver, David, took excellent care of us! We feel so blessed to have experienced visiting The Blue Hole. Our guide Devroe made us feel like kids again-we were jumping off of cliffs & rope swings! He guided us every step of the way, taking pictures for us and truly made it one of the top 5 experiences we have ever had in our lifetime! The ATV guys at Wilderness were also wonderful - it was so great to be able to go 4-wheeling off road and have some fun with just the guides-what a view from the top! We have decided to start saving so next time we can bring our kids (21 & 23 years old) - and next time we are going to stay in a resort so we can spend a whole week in Jamaica - we loved the people, the food, the music & culture, the accent!! Thank you so much for arranging it all for us! I wish you all a wonderful Christmas and all the best to you in the New Year! Just had to come on here and share the great experience we had at Mohan's Jewellery Store in Ocho Rios. My wife and I were on vacation in Jamaica staying at the Jewel resort. I wanted to surprise her with a new diamond ring while we were there to replace a ring that was lost. I had called the store prior to our departuture from Canada just to let them know that we would be coming by for a visit. They offered us shuttle service to and from our resort which was great. When we arrived there was Sophie & Shaun there to greet us. What amazing staff they have!!! They listen to everything my wife had to say and was able to come up with the perfect ring for her!!! They were truely amazing and so were thier prices!!! We recently had the ring appraised and it was valued at triple of what we payed. So please people if you are looking for that something special for your loved one please visit them you won't be disappointed!!! My family and I took a Royal Caribbean cruise back in April, and this review is long over due. Dwain picked us up right off of the boat and off we were. We took his air-conditioned van throughout the island, and the entire time Dwain was interacting with us and giving us the history and background of the island. Dwain took Dunn's falls and afterwards to a breathtaking view of Ochos Rios right near Mick Jagger's house. From there we traveled to a tourist friendly shopping center and then went to an authentic Jamaican restaurant for lunch. The food was amazing and my brother and I to this day have been trying to hunt down some more festivals. And finally to top off the day my family and I tubed down the White River, and were escorted to an almost private beach with fresh fruit. The excursion was easily my favorite part of the cruise and my family and I absolutely 100% suggest Dwain as a tour guide. He is a genuinely great guy that always kept it interesting and was enthusiastic. By the end of the day it was sad to say goodbye. But overall it was a fantastic tour with a fantastic guide, and if I visit Jamaica again, there's one guide that we will try to book again, and that is Dwain Bailey.

My mom and I happened upon Mohan's Jewellery store in Soni's Plaza and we extremely happy with the entire experience. The staff all worked well together - smiling and helping make our shopping very pleasant. The store very clean and beautifully laid out. I purchased a stunning chocolate/white diamond ring set in rose gold. I had a little problem with it after I arrived at home (Canada) and I emailed Gary at the store and he took care of everything. I had my ring fixed and it is happily back on my finger all thanks to the great customer service I continued to receive once I got back home. I would recommend this duty free shopping experience to everyone - much better prices/services - than any of the cruise ship endorsed jewellery stores.

There are some really cool spots in the Ocho Rios area and hired a wonderful tour guide, Gary, for the day who gave us a private tour (we had the tour bus to ourselves) to see the surrounding towns and sights like the locals do. We went to Bob Marley's (birth house & mausoleum) on 'mount zion'; climbed Dunns river falls; went into the towns St. Ann & Ocho Rios; drove through the Fern Gully (wow); got some of the best patties and jerk chicken on the island, and more. Gary was a referral to us from friends and had much more competitive rates compared to the hotel/other-organized tour rates. He took us everywhere door-to-door personally, walked with us everywhere, making sure we were comfortable and that no one ripped us off. Really took good care of us. Gary gave us a bit of island history, lots of culture, and overall, added a lot of flavour to our "resort" vacation. What a great guy. I would highly recommend doing a tour with him, he also provides airport transfers to your hotel for cheaper than other operators. Took his card: Gary at (1876)567.4127 or [email protected]. He has since taken many of our friends and family around the island. Everyone comes back raving about the wonderful, hardworking, and professional guy Gary is. You will not be disappointed.

Has anyone done the Jamaican cooking class and beach at Margaritaville in Ocho Rios?  Seems to be a ncl only excursion.  Can't find any reviews anywhere... dd is interested in doing it.  I don't want to book it if it's crap though....

Yes.  We did this excursion on the Escape in Feb. 2022.

We enjoyed the cooking class itself.  But, would not recommend the excursion as a whole.

Drinks were not included with lunch and that was not made clear.  After lunch we had a very limited time at the beach - loungers and umbrellas were provided in a small/crowded roped-off area.  The beach was not very nice - quite rocky.  But, there were nice views of the ship.  The tour organizers were not clear with directions about times, meeting places, etc.  I’m sure we left some people behind as a result.  On the way back we were forced to stop at a touristy shopping area which almost no one wanted to do - the majority just stayed on the bus waiting for the few who wanted to shop.
