Day 1 : Optional Cruise To Bellagio

Location: bellagio, meals included: no meals.

Today introduces you to Como’s most sparkling jewel, stunning Bellagio, often described as Italy’s most beautiful town, as you cross by ferry to discover its elegant villas and glorious gardens. Following a short walking tour, you are free to enjoy Bellagio’s wondrous surroundings, perhaps taking a seat in a cafe, enjoying a delicious gelato, or simply strolling the lakefront promenade before returning across the water at your leisure.

Day 3 : Optional Milan Day Trip

Location: milan.

Milan is not merely a centre of worldwide fashion; it is also home to some excellent collections of art and architecture. The Sforzesco Castle, the famous shopping Galleria, La Scala - one of the world’s greatest opera houses - and the great cathedral, Il Duomo (the world’s second largest Gothic church) are among the breathtaking sights on your guided tour.

Day 4 : Optional Ride On The Bernina Express

Location: tirano.

Board the Bernina Express to travel from Tirano across viaducts, via Brusio, and across the Bernina Pass to St Moritz. Window-shop or enjoy a coffee in a choice of cafes, before returning to Como by coach, arriving in time for dinner at the hotel.

Day 5 : Optional Lake Lugano And Lugano Town Tour

Location: lake lugano.

Lugano is one of Switzerland’s most stylish lake-side resorts. Around the lake, pretty villages nestle amidst luxuriant vegetation, and the shoreline is dotted with villas and summer homes. After a short sightseeing tour, explore under your own steam, or to take the funicular ride up Monte Bre for a panoramic view.

Day 6 : Optional Bergamo Excursion

Location: bergamo.

In the twin city of Bergamo, the 16th-century walls of Alta (the upper city) shelter the grand Palazzo della Ragione, churches and colonnaded library that surround Piazza Vecchia, and overlook the Neoclassical buildings of Bassa (the lower city). Don’t miss the chance to enjoy a meal - or at least a snack - here, in a city famed for its food and fondly championed by the late, great Antonio Carluccio.

What's Not Included

Hotel transfer times.

The transfer time from the airport to your hotel is approximately one hour 30 minutes from Milan Malpensa and two hours from Bergamo.

Combining hotel transfers

We sometimes need to combine transfers to and from your hotel. We always try to keep any wait to a minimum, but you may be asked to wait at the airport for up to an hour, while other incoming flights arrive, before the transfer to your hotel. Similarly, we may need to transfer you back to the airport up to three hours before your flight home departs.

Meals in Italy

Guests on half-board arrangements will be served a three-course evening meal, and can expect a first course of traditional pasta or soup, a main meat or fish course accompanied by one or two types of vegetable, and a simple dessert of fruit, cake or Italian ice cream. Breakfasts will usually consist of bread rolls, jam, cereal, ham, cheese, fruit juice, tea and coffee. Menus will vary from hotel to hotel, but choice will be more limited than in a normal restaurant. In some instances, individual guests who have booked with the hotel independently may be offered a different menu from those who are staying at the hotel as part of a package tour.

Entrance fees

Since some attractions visited offer free admission to visitors at certain times of year, we do not include entrance fees. These will be payable locally where applicable.

If you have notified us of any special requirements, please check that they have been noted and acknowledged. This is especially important with any dietary needs you may have.

Disabled access

The majority of our tours involve a certain amount of walking, including a short walk from the coach stop to the town, attraction or venue you're visiting. If you are bringing a wheelchair, please let us know at the time of booking so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

Italian hotel room tax

Some regions of Italy have introduced a room tax of between 1 € and 3 € per person per night, payable directly by the guest to the hotel on check-out. You will be advised by your Tour Manager in resort if a particular hotel is implementing this charge.

Itinerary changes

Occasionally, for operational reasons, we may have to change the order of the excursions on your holiday. The final day-by-day itinerary will be confirmed on your Final Travel Documents, which you will receive approximately three weeks prior to your departure.Passengers travelling on tours departing after September 2018 will be offered different excursions on Days Four, Six and Seven. Airport development fees

An Airport Development Fee has been introduced at a few UK Airports. You will be required to pay this charge at the following airports prior to checking in for your flight: Blackpool, Newquay and Norwich. The amount varies from airport to airport, but it is generally between £5 and £10 per person. Please visit the airport's website for further information.

Travelling to Europe after Brexit

New rules apply when travelling to European Union countries and Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. The following are useful guidelines which will help you prepare for your next adventure. Note that these new rules do NOT apply when travelling within the United Kingdom or to the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man or the Republic of Ireland. You do require government issued ID when travelling by air though. Passport - British passport holders need to have at least six months validity left on their passport and it needs to be less than ten years old; passports which have a longer validity than ten years are not valid for travel once the tenth anniversary of issue has passed. These rules do not apply to travel to Ireland where you can continue to use your passport as long as it’s valid for the length of your stay. Visa - If you’re a tourist, you do not need a visa for short trips to most EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. You’ll be able to stay for up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period. Different rules will apply to Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Romania; if you visit these countries, visits to other EU countries will not count towards the 90-day total. Travel to Ireland will not change and stays there will not count towards the 90-day total. European Travel Information & Authorisation System (ETIAS) - Towards the end of 2022, it is likely that non EU citizens will be required to apply online for an authorisation to visit most European countries. The current details suggest there will be a charge of €7 per person and the authorisation will be valid for all trips made to the EU in a three year period from issue. We will advise you of confirmed details prior to your tour’s departure. Border Control - At border control, you may need to show proof of your return journey - your travel documentation issued by us will be sufficient for this. You will also need to use separate lanes from EU, EEA and Swiss citizens if manual checks are required. Healthcare Cover - You should always get appropriate travel insurance with healthcare cover before you go abroad which covers pre-existing conditions. You should understand the terms and conditions of your travel insurance and be happy with its cover for healthcare and travel disruption. Newmarket sell a comprehensive travel insurance policy. Ask our travel consultants for more information. You should also apply for a UK Global Heath Insurance Card (GHIC) which lets you get urgent state healthcare in Europe at a reduced cost or sometimes for free. Note GHIC is only valid in EU countries and not in Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Mobile Roaming - Roaming charges have been re-introduced by some UK providers when visiting the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Prior to travel, please do check with your phone operator for the most up to date information.

This is the third holiday I have taken…

This is the third holiday I have taken with Newmarket Holidays. They made it easy to change from the Holiday I originally booked to one in the UK. The tour leader was excellent as was our driver, both of whom went the extra mile to ensure we had a lovely holiday. There were difficulties at the hotel due to COVID but we were made very welcome and the staff went out of their way to help us. So I have no complaint about Newmarket's choice of hotel. I am a single traveller and normally do not like to travel in groups but the laidback atmosphere of Newmarket Holidays is fine.

Very happy time on an action packed trip to the Scottish highlands. Eddie as tour manager and Simon as driver. Canada October 2021

We have returned from our long overdue trip to Canada Niagara Falls to the Rockies stating in Toronto and finishing in Vancouver. Well we happened to be the first trip back after the Coiid outbreak and it was so good to go. The company had made sure we were all safe and masks were worn where ever they had to be but this did not dampen the trip at all, the Tour directors ( guides ) were brilliant and we saw and did so much it was a fantastic trip which I would recommend to everyone, defiantly one for the bucket list.

2 - bernina express from lake como - tailor made tour.

If you want to forget about the stress of the schedules, the worry of losing yourself or getting stuck somewhere, this tailor-made tour of the Bernina Express is definitely the right one for you!

The only thing you need to worry about is taking the ferry around 8:00 from Bellagio to Varenna.

The local guide, with his authorised minivan, will take you on a breathtaking tour of the lake and the mountains: you will cross the Valtellina area surrounded by vineyards and apple trees in bloom, you can taste the typical products of this area from cheese to wine.

Once you arrive in Tirano our guide will help you in buying the Bernina Express ticket (approx. € 28 second class or € 50 first class ONE WAY) and come with you to Bernina Express departure train station.

The magical journey between glaciers and mountains on the highest and most scenic railway in Europe (2253 m.s.l.m.) begins!

The guide will wait for you at the St Moritz station, together you will visit one of the most famous cities for its boutiques and (in winter) for its exclusive ski slopes. This type of tour will allow you to choose, on the advice of your companion, what to visit, where to stop for lunch and will enrich you with cultural information of these wonderful places.

Back again on the minivan to cross the Maloja pass to slowly return to Varenna. You can choose with your guide to stop in other interesting places: the beautiful village of Chiavenna or the Abbey of Piona.

The return is scheduled at around 19:00 in Varenna.

We are wanting to take the Bellagio Express Train from Verena to St. Moritz and back. Both ways on the train only. How should we go about this? I’m a little confused about the tours and when there is a driving tour or multiple stops. We are fine with another stop along the way, but don’t necessarily want a driving tour. Also, is the train ride winding or is it straight with some curves as needed? I get sick on roads if it gets too winding and so never do mountains. However, I’m thinking maybe a train wouldn’t be so winding. Thank you.

Ciao Marcia, also Lake Como roads are a litle windy but if you go with a good driver who drives slow you just enjoy the views and that’s it (I suffer the car too so I know what you mean). The good thing of having a driver is that you can talk directly to him about your feelings and you can help you feeling better. That’s the good thing of a private tour with a small group. The guide/driver takes care of you.

The train is smooth and when I did it I had no problem. Anyway some coke helps me (I never drink it, just on emergencies when I travel together with a slice of lemon ☺️) The good thing of the private tour is that you don’t do the train rain twice.

All Lombardy region has windy roads but driving slowly helps you a lot!

Today you have a full day to appreciate the scenery of nearby Switzerland, travelling to St Moritz on the Bernina Railway. This incredible train journey stops at St Moritz and travels through some of the most spectacular Alpine landscapes in Europe.

Aside from admiring the splendid location, you'll also be able to take in the views over St Moritz, and visit the many museums in town. St Moritz is a magnificent location that always makes for an exciting day out. Thought of as the home of Alpine tourism, the town is a favorite with numerous celebrities and royals, and you'll find lots to see and do here.

Today you will go on an excursion to Varenna with photo stops and free time along the way. You will pass some of the most beautiful villages, nestled on the shores of Lake Como in this stunning corner of northern Italy. You'll drive through quaint lakeside ports, magnificent mountain scenery and traditional Italian villages.

When you arrive you'll meet your private guide for a private guided tour. Varenna, gracefully perched on the mountain, is one of the most panoramic spots of the lake. Explore the village and walk along the lake through the "Lover's Walk" connecting Varenna to Olivedo, and walk up to the ruins of the 11th Century Vezio Castle. The afternoon is yours at leisure. Return to Colico by private coach transfer.

Today is yours to enjoy and spend time exploring the beautiful surroundings.

Today you'll go on a full-day lake tour by boat around Lake Como. You can enjoy the views from the comfort of your private boat as you cruise across the lake. You'll sail past many of the opulent villas and manicured gardens which dot Lake Como's shores, all set against breathtaking Alpine backdrops. Upon arrival lunch will be at local restaurant. Lake Como, one of the deepest in Europe, has been beloved of romantics since the famous Roman chronicler Pliny wrote of its luxuriant beauty and it has inspired some of the best works by greats such as Verdi and Rossini. A favourite of Shelley and Wordsworth, the delights of Lake Como are many and varied and this morning you can enjoy one of its many highlights, a private boat and tour of the beautiful, 18th century Villa del Balbianello, one of the finest villas surrounding the lake. Originally built for a cardinal, it features a renowned collection of art and historic furniture, ironically much of it English, including an oak bureau from Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory. The gardens are equally stunning, being a series of manicured terraces full of fragrant roses and colourful borders, dominated by a classic three arched ‘loggia’, and all creatively planted using the rugged topography to great effect. The boat then takes us to the elegant and exclusive resort of Bellagio which, with its idyllic location on a promontory on the lake, is often described as the most beautiful town in Italy, and when you see it you will almost certainly agree! Once the haunt of European monarchs, today the attractive, pastel-coloured buildings, faded by decades of sunshine, line the lake shore and narrow cobbled streets and lanes climb their way to the hilly centre. Awash with colourful flowers Bellagio cannot be bettered for a long lazy lunch in one of the many lakeside restaurants, followed by a stroll perhaps amongst the many typically formal Italian gardens so beloved of romantics over the centuries, sprinkled as they are with fine, 18th century sculpture. Spend the afternoon exploring at your own pace before returning to your resort by boat when you wish. (Subject to available boat timetable)

Today, we enjoy a contrasting day of spectacular scenery and extraordinary Swiss engineering. Firstly we ascend up the Valtellina, a classic alpine valley with soaring peaks rising steeply on both sides to Tirano, where we board the famous Bernina Express. One of the slowest ‘express’ trains in the world, this remarkable Swiss train twists upwards in an amazing sequence of spirals, loops and tunnels to the summit at Ospizio Bernina, the highest through station in Europe. Here, you are surrounded by stunning vistas over snow-clad peaks and ice-cold glacial lakes which strikingly mark the watershed between Mediterranean and Black Sea river systems. We descend sinuously through pretty pastures and dense pine forests to the ostentatiously chic resort of St Moritz, home of the infamous Cresta Run toboggan track, where there’s time for a spot of window shopping or perhaps afternoon tea and cake. Listen carefully and you may notice a rather unusual tongue: here, in this tiny corner of Switzerland, the locals speak Romansch, an ancient and little known Latin language. We return through yet more spectacular scenery to Lake Como for dinner. Signature Experience: From Tirano settle into your upgraded first-class seat in a spacious carriage, sit back and soak up the dazzling mountain views as you ride the legendary Bernina Express in style and comfort. Today we visit nearby Lake Maggiore and its most attractive lakeside town, Stresa, which owes its origin to the days of the ‘Grand Tour’ when Europe’s 19th century aristocracy, having crossed the border from Switzerland, experienced their first taste of Italy! Unmistakably Mediterranean in character, its shores, lined with oleanders and palms, backed by classic belle époque hotels create an ambience of classic gentility. Here, we’ll enjoy a guided tour of Isola Bella, one of the real gems of northern Italy, once owned by a Milanese Count who, in the 17th century, created the most amazing ‘belle époque’ villa. With its staterooms crammed with fine furniture, sculpture and art with intricate parquet flooring and elegant pastel-coloured plasterwork and frescoes adorning the high ceilings, it’s simply stunning. Even more impressive though, are the astonishing grounds, featuring ten interlocking terraces imaginatively planted with orange and lemon trees, plus magnolias and a host of other fragrant and colourful shrubs and plants. Marble statues and unique, white peacocks add the final touches to this dramatic display. Previous distinguished visitors include Queen Caroline of England, wife of George IV, plus Napoleon and Josephine. In complete contrast, the narrow-cobbled streets, picturesque harbour and charming buildings of the fascinating Isola dei Pescatori, the second island we visit, reflect its 10th century origins and centuries old fishing tradition after which it is named. 2024 departures only: Enjoy a guided tour of the Baroque Palazzo on Isola Bella – its resplendent rooms feature refined furniture, sculptures and paintings while outside exquisite terraces are planted with citrus trees and magnolias.

Today you are free to explore as you wish. Enjoy a delicious Italian coffee in one of the pleasant cafés. Alternatively you may decide to take the boat to the lakeside town of Como or visit the gardens of Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo. This morning we travel to Lugano, capital of the Italian speaking canton of Ticino which was seized by the Swiss in 1512 and has steadfastly refused any opportunity to revert to Italy ever since! It is absolutely fascinating, an eclectic mix of traditional Swiss values and the more laid-back Latin influences from across the border. The trains run on time and shops are just as chic, but there’s a distinctive Mediterranean feel unlike anything you’ll experience elsewhere in Switzerland. Tiny alleyways lead to unmistakably Italian piazzas, where you can relax over a typically Italian lunch, but like everywhere else in Switzerland, the traffic laws are obeyed without question - it really is a quirky blend! The town is a delight to explore being centred round the café-lined main square, ideal to people-watch whilst enjoying a superb coffee. Alternatively, you can explore the myriad of twisting lanes of the old town or the dense network of shops with their displays probably unmatched anywhere in the world. Lugano is a lovely place to idly wander, before we enjoy yet more outstanding scenery on our return journey to our hotel for dinner.

Today you’re free to explore Lake Como at leisure. Perhaps enjoy a boat trip to one of the picturesque villages dotted around the lake, or simply relax at the hotel and enjoy the stunning scenery.

We return to the airport at the appropriate time for our flight home after a memorable and varied tour.

A hugely enjoyable and memorable holiday

We are making our way home from the "Andalusia by Small Boat" holiday, and what a fabulous holiday it was. This was a first run of this holiday by Newmarket, and I'm sure they will polish the Small Boat element; but in all other respects in was thoroughly enjoyable. Our Tour Manager Jude was the most amazing character. Joyful, hard working, attentive and caring; Jude looked after us all, and at times went above and beyond the call of duty : putting herself out for those of us less able. Jude made this holiday so very memorable. The hotel was excellent, and the towns we visited were wonderful. A great experience all round. The boat trips need a little polish.

We were on the four day trip to Belfast…

We were on the four day trip to Belfast with Newmarket holidays.Everything about the trip from the pick up at the airport to the drop off went smoothly. Our tour manager Tony made sure that the excursions were well planned and timed well.Our bus driver and guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining. Tony and Charlie included some extras into our trips and were extremely friendly and efficient. This was another enjoyable Newmarket holiday.

Great customer service

Spoke to a lovely customer services rep Lisa who noted down my complex dietary requirements for an upcoming Sicily trip. She also flagged that my check in was already open without being asked, which I thought showed good attention to detail. Didn’t have to wait long to get through either which is a minor miracle in this day and age.

Very straightforward booking experience

Booked easily online yesterday & communication, so far, has been very efficient. I liked the option to fly from a regional airport. After much research the holiday looks to be excellent value. My only criticism-I wish it was a couple of days longer.

Rapid problem resolution

I had to ring Newmarket as I faced a problem with having to pay for my holiday using two credit cards. The phone was answered promptly and my problem resolved efficiently by Neil. We now look forward to our holiday to Sicily in June.

Very easy booking process.

The booking process went without a hitch We had already identified the Ambassador cruise we were interested in and received a very prompt telephone response – from Harriet at Newmarket – to our online enquiry. We discussed and confirmed our requirements sorted out the cabin and arranged the coach transfer from London to the departure port. Also paid the deposit Harriet was very friendly and helpful. Very pleased with the whole booking process.

Great short break in Belfast

Great short break in Belfast with Newmarket Holidays thanks to our tour leader Tony and driver Charlie who guided us around and entertained us and answered all our questions

3 stars and I'm being generous! Booked a Sri Lanka temples and safari in March this year with Newmarket Travel. We had a welcome meeting on the arrival day to explain the itinerary when we were informed - that for me personally - the rail tour through scenic Sri Lanka had been cancelled. This was due we we told by the tour guide "it was to do with ticket availability and that we already knew this via an Email sent to us already and that a free lunch and compensation would be given as well". I and everyone else went into uproar when told this because no-one had had an Email, and this was the first we had heard of this. The guide was visably shaken by our response and contacted his company and told us he would come back to us later with an update. I immediately contacted Newmarket Travel and explained the situation. After several Emails it was confirmed that the rail tour was cancelled and we would get some compensation. To rub salt in the wounds we actually went by road/tuc tuc and did a photo stop at the famous 9 Arch Bridge and probably saw the train that we should have been on with an empty 1st class at the back of the train. This tour goes on a regular basis, with the brochures available for over a year in advance, so for a travel company not being able to organise train tickets is - for me - unforgiveable Another issue was that it took Newmarket 2 days to reply to an Email marked urgent regarding online check-in for our journey home - which we told we had to do- in the end we had to check in at the airport as we were unable to check in online due to our booking ref not being recognised! The rest of the tour was good, we had a good tour group who all got on really well, but some days too busy, not getting to hotels till late or having late evening meals. Would I go with Newmarket Travel again? No. I do not expect a major intinary change and to be told that we already knew about it is unforgiveable. If I knew the train journey was not happening I would have wanted to cancel my booking.

BREE - the epitome of patience!

BREE talked me through the somewhat stressful process for getting the RyanAir flights under our control, rather than themselves (as third party bookers). She was the epitome of patience! With a landline tucked to my ear and a mobile on which to carry out the procedure, we got through it together! Sadly at the end of it, I noticed our flights were still for a previously booked date, subsequently changed by Newmarket Holidays, so felt somewhat anxious. Need not have been. 48 hours later, I received new flight info from RyanAir and my account with them had been updated (and paid!). And BREE said she has to do this with every booking with a Ryanair flight! I’m rather grateful a holiday later in the year has Jet2 flights!
