Depending on what you are into, this place is not for everyone. For me, I loved the atmosphere. The train cars, the tables decorated with different items, the school bus behind the bar, the old truck that you can sit in located just in the... service station. It was worth the drive down just to see it. It's right off exit 53 on I-10, can't miss it. My parents ordered the country fried steak, and they seemed to enjoy it, except it had a touch too much salt for them. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger and fries and it was really good, though the salt on the bacon kind of turned me off a bit. One of the highlights was the ranch dressing. I know...that's a bit unusual, but I love ranch dressing, especially on my fries, and it was delicious! Everyone has good and bad days, and that includes restaurants. The food may not win many awards, but the atmosphere is worth it! There is a Subway located just in the station, so if you don't feel like eating at the diner, you have an alternative. If nothing else, just visit, the kids would love it, even the kid at heart, like me! More

The food is amazing, the chicken fried chicken was moist and cooked to perfection. The pork chops were perfect.The waitress was friendly and always there when we needed her. Manager was walking around checking on people.

Quaint family style restaurant with a nice variety of choices. We were seated promptly, the restaurant was clean and we had good waitstaff. My husband and I both ordered the daily special which was ribs mashed potatoes and collard greens and it was all delicious.... Best collard greens ever. More

I always order the same thing, 2 chicken breast. I know it comes from the Chester vender next door but I have always asked them to fresh fry it and they have. The last couple of times, they brought me the chicken that’s was sitting... under a lamp. I sent it back and they fried it up fresh. This last visit, they served me refried chicken, I sent it back. Then they served me nuked chicken. Even the waitress knew what was going on. To make a long story short, I did not ask and they didn’t offer to take it off the check. My husband and I have been going to this diner for over 20 years. It has undergone of changes and we have always stuck by them. My husband may go back but I’m done. The service is good but the food has gone down hill. More

Well we stopped by and it has great atmosphere in travel center but once we got to the Derailed diner we asked if we could take a pic in front of bus and the a female worker said sure. My friend walked and stood in... front of where it said derailed diner after she was told it was ok. She was holding her service dog and as soon as she got back there a man sitting at a table got ugly and told her she couldn’t be there with dog because it was a food prep area. Mind you no food was being prepared at the counter because food is prepared in the bus. She said u don’t have to be so ugly and he responded by standing up with his cane and yelling at her to get out of the store! Completely uncalled for and wished I would had videod it! The man said he owned it if he does he needs to learn customer service skills and might need some anger management. The man at the counter when you walk in was very nice!!! He was a former principal, we are school teachers on fall break!! I also work part time for the health department and my friend was not in violation of anything except being abused verbally by a very angry man. More

First off congratulations on your reopen I know the Covid shut down did a number on your business. Now onto my experience here, I use to stop in here before the Covid shut down and the food and service was good, But today when I... stopped in I seen they had cut their menu and they didn't have a lot of the items they use to have which is understandable. But I stopped to grab dinner and I noticed that they didn't have side salads on the menu. I asked the server why that was and she couldn't give me an answer, But yet they had a chicken caesar salad and chicken salad on the menu. So when I was done I asked the manager directly about that. She told me because of staffing issues they don't make side salads. ????? But yet they will make you a chicken caesar salad. ???? Now I don't know why they could make a side salad but yet they can make a caesar salad is beyond me, but if your just reopening and trying to get your sales up you would do the small things to make a customer happy, right?? So needless to say I wouldn't recommend this place and if you do stop here don't ask them for something as simple as side salad. More

I've ate here in the past and I remember it was pretty good but today's experience was awful. The waitress I had was terrible. The drink was flat and she acted as though I offended her to ask for another. The burger was paper thin... and not worth $2. I had to ask for a to go drink and she brought it out with no top. I told her I would spill it before I got to my truck but she still didn't care. I asked another waitress for one on my way out and she gave me one right away. They need to fire her before she ruins their business.. More

Service was great. Jamocca was very attentive to the whole group. Everything we had was delicious. Our table tried the country fried steak, chicken fried chicken, and burgers. Great ranch dressing, too. Decor is interesting. Neat gift shop attached to walk off some energy.

This is a very unique place. Decor interesting. The service lacks friendliness. Food is good but not always how it is described in the menu. I ordered a salad that was to be romaine lettuce and when I got it is was ice burg lettuce.... Not a place for being a truck stop. More

Was a great place to eat. Attentive staff, great service, awesome food. It was plenty for a low price. Can't wait to head that direction again so we can stop in and eat some more of their awesome food.

Every time I drive from Florida to Texas I stop here because it is so fun. I love the decor and the food is really good plus has a very friendly staff. It also has a gift shop which is fun to stroll through.

Went here for lunch and on another day, breakfast. Lunch was an open face turkey sandwich with mashed potatoes, which was very good. Breakfast was conductor's platter - two slices of bacon, two sausages and eggs . Ordered 2 biscuits on the side. Like any... diner - a little on the greasy side. Would go again just for the decor. Easy on and off of I-10, exit 53. Service varies depending on waitress and how crowded it is. More

We stopped here, twice, because we couldn't believe the first time. A perfect stereotype truck stop except for the cute decor touches. Waitress Mabel (or possibly Gert) with the lacquered hair and the pencil behind the ear giving our table 1/3 of said ear's attention... whilst smiling broadly at four Manly Men in black denim and oil stains who walked in all talking in voices that rattled the windows. Maybell (or possibly Gurt) couldn't quite grab the significance of no gravy on mashed potatoes ('What was that again? Steak sauce?') and yes, we would like sweet tea. Twenty minutes later (after unwillingly eavesdropping on the truckers' breezy expletives toward their dispatcher) a root beer was delivered. No one knew why. Not even the server. It went on like this for nearly an hour until the truckers left. Then our food was delivered. Chicken fried steak with gravy. Fried chicken with mashed potatoes. Heat lamp food. At least it was a few hours earlier. I've had food at Palmetto High School (institutional but passable-fine) and I've had food at Glades Correctional Institute (avoid anything with a cream sauce) and Shands Hospital (decline organ meats) but the viands at the Derailed Diner looked like nothing a person with a choice would introduce to the innermost workings of their anatomy. Maybe that's why the truckers just had coffee. And I've never been to Uzbekistan. I just picked a distant location I could spell. Do yourself a favor, find another highway exit. At least the people in Arby's smile and say thank you. More

The only reason I'm giving this place a 1 is because of Amanda my server who was fantastic other than that it deserves a 0. I was welcomed by this girl who before even saying Hi told me dog wasn't allowed even if mine was... in a carrier and she's a 5 pound chihuahua. I asked her to lend me the menu to look at it outside so I could order to go and she refused. I left the dog with my parents in the car walked back in and had to call them on the phone to order. Ridiculous with no class that what she is whatever her name is. Overall the food was mediocre the beans we're from a can and the pork chops super dry. This place sucks. More

So glad we made it back here. Ordered a Western omelette and a Conductors Special. Both were excellent. Service was fast because we were not at the height of the breakfast hours. Had a marvelous time just walking around looking at the decor and lots... of "stuff." This is one of those "must stop" places. Truckers were very tolerant of people taking photos (me). Oasis Travel Center Does Retail Right

Oasis Travel Center in Robertsdale, Alabama, is a sight to see and a perfect example of a thriving retail operation. It is unique, memorable destination that is sure to make you smile. 

Oasis Travel Center, which is an Ambest location, has created specific themes for its profit centers, which add to the fun. 

The restaurant, the Derailed Diner, is one of the most talked about parts of the travel plaza. On the outside, it looks like a train crashed into the building. 

Inside there is a full-size school bus and a train caboose. All the décor and collateral is related to travel and space craft. 

Karen Brown, the location’s owner, wanted to do something different when it came time to remodel the restaurant. “Karen's mind began to wander toward novel ideas for the restaurant, and it hit her: It's a travel center. It's not just about food, it's about the journey. It's about celebrating the endless roads, and remembering the wheels that turn to make America happen,” the location’s website said. 

The diner gets a lot of attention on social media. One Yelp reviewer from California said, “This is one of those places you must eat at before you die! I'd probably actually solely come back to Alabama to eat at this place.” 

TripAdvisor users have uploaded 108 photos of the diner. One user said, “The decor is awesome…old toys, trains, truck tailgates as tables. At the bar you can fly in a plane, ride a tractor, a horse or on a Harley. You can dine in an old Pullman car where each table is decorated with a different theme.”

When you walk into the store, a hippie atmosphere welcomes you. There are Jimmy Hendrix posters, Volkswagon toy cars and nostalgic pieces for sale. Basically everything you think of when you think of the 70s is there.  

A little further in you’re greeted by a giant pirate ship, with cashiers working right from the middle of it. 

The area has a pirate and shipping theme. There are toys, stuffed animals and books all related to the ocean. 

As you travel into the store, you’re met with the traditional grocery, soda and candy sections. There is a Subway and Chester’s Chicken for those looking for grab-and-go foods, a solid coffee offering and beautiful coolers. 

The location has even added a fuel lane dedicated to local customers.

There is an old International Truck that has been transformed into the location’s fuel desk. It fits perfectly with the theme and adds to the atmosphere. 

As you walk back towards the restroom, there is a store-within-the-store with a building filled with kids’ toys, coloring books and crayons, pens, candy and more, which is a genius way to tap into families heading to the restroom. There are little rocking chairs for the kids to sit in and another area where they can sit and color.

Even more impressive is how well the location manages its SKUs and the overall retailing at the travel center. Dale Elks, the general manager, and Roger Gentry, the store manager, understand who the customer is and carry the products they want. He doesn’t let vendors control his offerings and has worked hard to avoid vendor creep—with more than one vendor offering a similar product. He knows what sells, focuses on what products he should be carrying and has crafted a solid product mix.

Elks also understands that you may have to have some products that don’t sell well in order to have a set. You can’t just have a hammer and screw driver to have a tool set, for example. He understands that but still tries to make a set as profitable and with as many turns as possible.

The location is a perfect mix of striking décor and product selection that make customers want to return. As one Google reviewer said, “Best truck stop around that I've found. Anything you need. Food, supplies, gifts, apparel, etc. Clean place with unique décor.”
