It is assumed it was constructed by the local king, Paliyath Achchan, who only became an independent monarch late in the 18th century. When he asked Hyder Ali to help him against an invasion, the latter took the opportunity to take possession of the Palakkad fort and the fort stayed under the rule of Mysore Sultans after that until 1790. That was when it was captured by Colonel Stuart, long after several backs and forth battles over the fort between the British and the Sultans. Later, it was converted into a Tehsil. The fort was forgotten until 2004 when the Archaeological Survey of India took it under its wing. We were in transit from CJB to Cochi and landed here. Everyone was super helpful, especially Dabutii who seemed to know just what we needed and made our stay so enjoyable. We did not explore the area because it felt a bit industrial/commercial. The food was very good. Dabuti got us a driver and was great!!!

In Agoda web page, it is rated as 3 star hotel. It is misleading to all travellers, Agodo should not promote as 3 star hotel without verification. On 20.8.2016 we are the only quest of the day without security, no kitchen to provide other than breakfast. It should be rated as 1 star or half star. What is the yardstick for Agodo to post rating on its chain of hotels in the webpage.

We stayed in Gazala Hotel for 2 nights. The hotel is located very close to Sultanpet junction with great access to the shopping areas in Palakkad. It has ample car parking space opposite to the hotel (across the road.) Most of guests are families checking in for functions as the hotel also has a banquet hall. 24 hour restaurant/coffee shop is available. Free Wifi, airconditioning and hot water is available. To improve, they could add tea/coffee making facility in the room, improve the room decor slightly. Breakfast spread is very basic and South Indian, a little more addition would help.

I stayed in the hotel for one Night only. The hotel is in the heart of town and thus has excellent location. The outward appearance of hotel is very good and imposing. The hotel is also very neat and clean. The only problem is the rooms have no views (alteast the room in which i stayed in). You will have a sense of being trapped inside 4 walls as there is no outside view. There is a small window, where shades cannot be opened. The room size was very small. You will always have a feeling of dampness and no ventillation even inside the hotel corridors. The Hotel restaurant is good, i would say very gud compared to Hotel sri Chakra international. The breakfast is good in taste

Stayed here for two days with my wife and daughter who is just two years old... Location is a bit remote, but ideal if you want to just relax.. Food was good... Kid's play area requires some attention as lots of building materials are put over there, so not child safe. Activities are quite less.... You can go for a trekking trip, but apart from that nothing good in house... and would be good resort to stay in groups...

Overall stay was decent and not bad. For the price paid I would say it was tolerable. We did have some issues which were as follows: The bathroom in one of the rooms that I booked had a leak from the bathroom above. When it was bought to the attention of the hotel staff, they opened an empty adjacent room and let us use that bathroom. The sheets while washed and fresh did have some old stains. When white sheets are used it is important that they are completely white with no stains. There were some mosquitoes in the hallway and in the room.

The hotel was brand new... it has started only 1.5 months before. Since it is a newly built building, cleanliness was perfect and staffs were very polite... it doesn't have restaurant.. I had ordered for a ghee roast for dinner and they informed that it will be purchased from outside hotel. They had charged me ₹50 whereas the actual price for it was only ₹23. Even though the room had TV & Dish TV set top box the channels were not getting for the whole 2 days that I stayed. When I informed it to the reception, they told that cable work is being performed.

Stayed here for a night on way to Chennai. hotel is located on the NH. I had stayed here earlier, but this time I found the property in a terrible condition. rooms are not neat, beds are creaking and uncomfortable and floors seems they have not seen a mop for ages. one of the lifts were not working and the lobby is badly lit. breakfast is pathetic to say the least. Overall, a nicely located property, slipping down due to sloppy maintenance and music management.

Palakkad Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Bipolar Contest or Triangular Fight in Kerala Seat? All You Need to Know
Reported By : Achyuth Punnekat
Last Updated: April 24, 2024, 06:53 IST
Palakkad, India

Palakkad, which is the only municipality ruled by the BJP in the state, is likely to witness a bipolar contest, but it could also turn out to be a triangular fight with the presence of a CPM candidate as the seat is traditionally a Left stronghold
Last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a massive roadshow in the Palakkad constituency, which will go to polls in the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections on April 26. He was there to rack up support for the BJP, which is putting special focus on the southern states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
Palakkad, which is the only municipality ruled by the BJP in the state, is likely to witness a bipolar contest between the Congress and the saffron party. But, it could also turn out to be a triangular fight with the presence of a CPM candidate as the seat is traditionally a Left stronghold.
The seat has a history of strong Jana Sangh and RSS activity through which it has built a solid BJP cadre on the ground. The party has also been able to increase its vote share in the last two elections.
The Palakkad constituency is made up of seven assembly segments — Pattambi, Shoranur, Ottapalam, Kongad (SC), Mannarkkad, Malampuzha and Palakkad. It is presently represented by VK Sreekandan of the Congress. Contesting candidates include Sreekandan, C Krishnakumar of the BJP and A Vijayaraghavan of the CPI(M).
C Krishnakumar of the BJP is a popular figure and has acceptability beyond the traditional Hindu vote bank. Since the 2019 defeat, he has been visibly working to shore up his support base in the constituency, especially in Kalpathy, Malampuzha, and Palakkad town.
Krishnakumar is a former Palakkad Municipal Corporation vice-chairman and has a strong following. But there is a section in the district BJP that is sceptical about him.
The Palakkad municipality is one of two in Kerala controlled by the BJP. However, factionalism is the bane of the ruling party in this civic body. Last year, the municipal chairperson was changed after infighting and governance literally came to a standstill following complaints by councillors against their former chairperson Priya Ajayan. The present chairperson, Pramila Sasidharan, is seen to be close to Krishnakumar.
The BJP has been able to field strong leaders in the past in the Palakkad Lok Sabha and assembly contests like Sobha Surendran, E Sreedharan and Krishnakumar. Former union minister O Rajagopal is a Palakkad native and is respected in the constituency.
Since the 1950s and 1960s, Palakkad has had a history of RSS and Jana Sangh activity. Hence, the BJP has, in the last 15 years or so, been able to built a strong cadre — one to rival that of the Left Democratic Front (LDF).
Palakkad has seen a 6 per cent increase in BJP vote share in each of the past two Lok Sabha elections. But, it is important to note that the saffron party’s popularity in Palakkad is not evenly distributed. The party is strongest in areas like Palakkad town, adjoining the Tamil Nadu border. It has made less progress in other rural and urban areas, where there is a larger population of Muslim voters.
Sitting MP VK Sreekandan is quite popular and has done a lot of work on the ground. Although his parliamentary interventions are not many, he is well-liked in the constituency. He makes it a point to attend all major functions, and has spent from the MPLADs on development work, although not during the Covid period.
Sreekandan barely scraped through in 2019, owing to a strong triangular fight with the then MP MB Rajesh of the CPI(M) and the BJP’s Krishnakumar. This time around, the contest may be slightly easier for him as the CPI(M) candidate is not as popular.
Palakkad’s sitting MLA Shafi Parambil is contesting from the Vatakara Lok Sabha seat. He, too, is popular in the constituency (beyond Muslims) and could potentially secure some votes for Sreekandan. Congress leader Shashi Tharoor’s ancestral house is also in the Palakkad district (but in Alathur Lok Sabha constituency). Tharoor has high popularity in Palakkad.
A Vijayaraghavan of the CPM is not as popular a candidate. He is a politburo member and has been a good parliamentarian, but lacks local connect and does not seem attuned to the issues of the constituency. He is also not easily accessible, unlike Sreekandan or Krishnakumar.
Incidentally, the only time Vijayaraghavan scraped through to a win in this seat was in 1989 when he was on the ballot against his namesake, VS Vijayaraghavan of the Congress.
However, Palakkad is a traditional stronghold of the Left. Segments like Kongad, Ottappalam, and Shornur are Left citadels. The LDF has strong cadre on the ground, and Vijayaraghavan will benefit from it.
Here are some of the key issues in the Palakkad constituency:
- Palakkad hosts a large number of state government pensioners and employees. Issues revolving around delayed salaries/pensions will be a key factor in the elections. The Pinarayi Vijayan-led government has been struggling to justify the delays and has attempted to shift the blame onto pending dues from the Centre. However, it is unlikely to have much impact.
- At least 300 employees of CPSU ITI based in Kanjikode have also been struggling with delayed and erratic wages. Last year, they were not paid for several months, despite the unit supplying critical components for Chandrayaan 3.
- The seat is one of the key agricultural regions in the state. However, farmers are upset with the LDF government over delays in MSP payments. In Kerala, state-run Supplyco procures paddy from farmers and hands over produce to private mills to convert paddy into rice for distribution through the public distribution system (PDS). This rice is included as Kerala’s share in the Centre’s (FCI) rice lift. But the contribution to the MSP by the Centre (which is around 75% of the total payment) comes only after the rice reaches the PDS network. Due to ongoing disputes between Supplyco and private mills, this cycle has been delayed.
- Man-animal conflict and the failure of the state government to effectively address the issue will be key in high-range areas like Kalladikode, Mannarkkad, and Attappadi. Recently, a boar attacked a young boy. A wild elephant code-named PT-7, which gave sleepless nights to many people and killed one person, was captured last year.
- Palakkad’s KSRTC bus stand has in a bad state for years. In 2022, it was pulled down and a swanky new building was constructed in its place. This has been widely welcomed by the local residents. The terminal was constructed with funds allocated by MLA Shafi Parambil from his asset development fund. It was a rare occasion when the CPM government and the UDF MLA were seen working together.
- Tribals in the Attappadi area have long faced neglect. However, political parties have been actively trying to woo this vote bank of around 27,000 people. While Sreekandan claims to have facilitated road building in this area, the BJP recently organised a ‘Viksit Sankalp Yatra’ here.
- The arrest of a local CPM leader, TA Ahmed Kabir, from Cherpulassery in a POCSO case was a significant issue last year. This will likely impact the party in that area, but the benefit could go to Congress as the BJP does not have a strong presence there. Issues such as “love jihad” have also found resonance in the constituency.
- Palakkad native Nimisha Priya is on death row in Yemen over the murder of her business partner, a Yemeni national, since 2017. Last year, the ministry of external affairs said they could not secure her release. While this may not be a hot election issue, the contrast with the release of ex-sailors in Qatar is notable.
- Gaganyaan astronaut-designate Prashanth Nair has his ancestral house in Palakkad. His selection for the team will be a point of pride for the BJP as it seeks votes.
- Palakkad was once a major railway division for the Southern Railway, until pressure from the DMK/AIADMK had forced the UPA government to bifurcate it. The voters of Palakkad have long been demanding the re-amalgamation of the division.
- A railway coach factory has been a long-standing demand of the local residents. O Rajagopal had tried hard to establish it when he was the minister of state for railways. But, the project was finally scrapped under this government. A revival of the project will be greatly welcomed by the populace and can generate a lot of jobs.
- Palakkad residents have also been demanding a Vande Bharat service, since the present Trivandrum-Kasaragod Vande Bharat Express train only touches Shoranur. A new service from Kochi-Bengaluru or extension of Bengaluru-Coimbatore Vande Bharat is an urgent imperative considering the large number of IT professionals from the constituency who live and work in Bengaluru.
- Palakkad has always faced issues of drought and scant rainfall. The year 2023 was no different. This year, as the mercury peaks in southern states, the constituency is struggling. Palakkad town is heavily dependent on the Malampuzha reservoir for water. Elsewhere, the Bharatapuzha is a major source of water.
- The establishment of an AIIMS in Kerala is another hot election issue. While the state government is going ahead with land acquisition in Kozhikode, the BJP wants to have it in Palakkad. The ball is now in the Centre’s court.
What are the voting factors?
- Cross voting: During the previous assembly elections, E Sreedharan had put up a strong showing for the BJP. He lost the assembly seat by a narrow margin to Parambil. The loss is attributed to around 3,000 Left votes, which were diverted to the Congress in the final hours of polling. A repeat of this can be expected in the general elections too.
- Demographic change: This is a major concern among Hindus, especially among upper classes like Nairs, Ambalavasis among others. This is most visible in Palakkad town but also in the hinterland. A visible shift can be seen among the 50-plus age group towards the BJP. Areas like Kongad, Cherpulassery, Shoranur, and Pattambi continue to be Left citadels but have seen a significant increase in Muslim populations now. It must be remembered that these areas have seen repeated attrition of the Hindu population starting from Tipu Sultan’s invasion to the 1921 Moplah riots. Backward communities like Ezhavas/Thiyyas form a significant chunk of the Hindu vote in Palakkad. These have traditionally supported the Left or Congress but there is growing support for the BJP, particularly among the affluent families.
- Muslims: Palakkad has a significant Muslim population of around 28% as per the 2011 census. This has most likely increased, as is visible on the ground. Without any Muslim candidate in the fray, most of the Muslim vote is likely to be transferred to the candidate with the best chance of winning, ie, Sreekandan. Also, a significant portion of this Muslim vote is controlled by the IUML (a UDF constituent), which even has an MLA in the Mannarkkad assembly segment.
- Christians: Palakkad has a relatively smaller Christian population. However, they have been a visible part of the business scene in the town in the 1980s and 1990s, replacing Tamil-origin trading communities. But, of late, the domination of Christians has been challenged by Muslim-owned businesses, primarily driven by Gulf money and from further north of Malabar. While the BJP has made major efforts to reach out to the Christian community in neighbouring Thrissur and in Kottayam, such efforts are not visible in Palakkad.
