For your first day in Palau, we head over to Airai State for a culturally rich and eco-friendly, guided tour. You've got a couple of options to pick from - the Half Day Tour or the Full Experience!  Now, let's take a closer look at what each option has in store for you

Day 2 | Ocean Day 

Welcome to Day 2 to 4 of your Palauan adventure, where we dive headfirst into the captivating world of crystal-clear waters and vivid marine life. Get ready for exhilarating days exploring the turquoise playground that Palau has to offer. 

Traveler Tip: Whether you're a newfound enthusiast of swimming or an adept swimmer or freediver, don't forget to communicate your expertise and preferences to your tour operator. A Surreal Encounter: Jellyfish Lake (Optional)

Explore the vibrant underwater world of Cemetery Reef known as Fish Bowl , where marine life flourishes in diverse abundance. Marvel at the lively displays of small reef fish like Fusiliers, Anthias, and Rainbow Runners as they dart among the captivating coral formations. 

Gateway to Wonder: The Natural Arch  Our adventure continues as we venture to the stunning Natural Arch. Witness the impressive artistry of nature as waves have sculpted this exquisite arch over time. Capture this awe-inspiring sight and relish in the realization of Palau's extraordinary beauty.

Day 3 | Ocean Day 

Begin your day with a snorkeling adventure at Rainbow Reef where you'll see a myriad of coral and fish species! 

Venturing a bit farther, we arrive at Clam City , where giant clams thrive. It's an awe-inspiring spectacle—among the 12 global species of giant clams, 8 find their home in Palau. These gentle giants dot the ocean floor with their ornate and colorful shells. Witness their serene existence in this aquatic haven.

After hours of exploration, treat yourself to a delightful break at Long Beach Island , a charming Rock Island that invites you to savor a leisurely lunch. This delightful spot is also an ideal location for swimming and snorkeling, made even more special by the friendly company of our shark companions. Take a dip and embrace the heartwarming presence of these kind-natured creatures as they gracefully navigate the waters around you, creating an utterly enchanting and unforgettable experience.

As you embark on your journey towards Big Drop Off, you'll traverse the captivating German Channel . This passage presents a unique opportunity to witness the graceful presence of Manta Rays, adding an enchanting dimension to your exploration.

The Big Drop Off is our final stop – an exhilarating dive into the depths. A coral wall plunges dramatically, revealing the intricate world hidden beneath the surface. Schools of fish dance in harmony with the currents, while vibrant corals paint the seascape in living color. As you float along its edge, marvel at the myriad of colors and life forms that call this underwater cliff home.

Day 4 | Ocean Day 

The morning begins with the Pinchers cove . Inviting you to embark on a serene swim within this shallow lagoon. Gently glide through the crystal-clear waters, where curious fish dart among the corals. A great start to your day on the water.

Next, we delve into the intriguing world of sunken history with the Wrecks dive. Discover WWII  wrecks that now serve as artificial reefs, home to an array of marine creatures that have made these underwater structures their habitat. The wrecks tell stories of the past, and as you swim among them, you become a part of these tales, connecting with the mysteries of the deep.

By now, appetites are bound to be awakened by our ocean escapades. A lunch break awaits you on the shores of a tranquil spot, inviting you to refuel and soak in the mesmerizing coastal views. Let the flavors of the island tantalize your taste buds as you take in the serenity of your surroundings.

Next stop is Ulong Channel , a diving hotspot in Palau nestled on the western side of Ulong Island. However, be forewarned: Ulong Channel presents a distinctive challenge due to its occasionally unpredictable currents that may shift unexpectedly throughout the dive. Exercise caution and preparedness as you embark on this thrilling underwater adventure.

Cap off a day of diving with a boat cruise through the Rock Island Southern Lagoon . Traverse between the majestic Rock Islands, immersing yourself in the unrivaled beauty of the ocean, sky, and the surrounding rock formations, creating a harmonious tapestry of natural wonders.

Discovering Palau's Landscapes & Cultural Riches: Venturing Into the <3 of the Island

Welcome to Days 4 to 6 of your Palauan adventure! After a couple of bustling days, it's time to shift into more relaxed gear and truly soak in the experience. We're adopting a leisurely cruise mode today, taking the scenic route and allowing ourselves the luxury of time.

Begin your day with a delightful cup of coffee or a hearty breakfast at a local establishment. Awaken your senses as you prepare for a day of cultural exploration.

Scenic Drive to Ngarchelong State- Babeldaob's Northernmost Point 

Embarking on a scenic drive from Koror to Babeldaob, embrace the beauty of the surroundings as you travel along the picturesque route. Babeldaob's awe-inspiring landscapes will accompany you on this journey. As you navigate through the stunning scenery, you'll find yourself gradually approaching Babeldaob’s northernmost state, Ngarchelong State.

Discover Badrulchau and Todai

Your adventure continues as you explore the intriguing sites of Badrulchau and Todai in Ngarchelong State. These historical landmarks hold stories of the past and provide a glimpse into the island's heritage. 

Visit the Badrulchau Stone Monoliths and walk through this ancient site containing the famous stone monoliths and plaza of carved faces in a savanna area surrounded by terraces. Found nowhere else in Palau, the site has been dated as far back as A.D. 161. The pillars are the remains of what could have been the largest meeting house ever built in Palau. The oral history stated that the structure was made entirely of stone by the gods. 

Onto the next stop, take a stroll through the ancient Japanese lighthouse and remnants of World War II, all while soaking in a stunning view at none other than Todai. Ascend the timeworn staircases to reach the lighthouse and be greeted by an unforgettable sight. Don't forget to peer through the scenic telescopes for a closer look at the neighboring islands.

Recharge with lunch at Okemii Restaurant and Cafe in Melekeok State. Beachside dining with a view. 

Ngermecheluch Pier and Beyond

No road trip adventure would be complete without a visit to the Ngermecheluch Pier in Melekeok. This ancient stone pier, proudly standing as the longest of its kind in Palau, is more than a mere structure. It stands as a testament to human ingenuity, having been constructed by the people of Melekeok without the aid of modern tools, and has withstood the test of time. Today, it is maintained by the Ngaramecherocher (Young Men’s Club) of Melekeok. Following a recent powerful typhoon, the Melekeok community and dedicated volunteers came together to rebuild the pier, showcasing the resilience, unity, and enduring spirit of the local people.

Take a leisurely stroll to the pier's very end and take in this living piece of history, basking in the warmth of the sunshine and the gentle caress of the breeze. Here, you'll be treated to captivating views of the water and the picturesque surroundings, creating moments that will be forever etched in your memory.

Fun Fact:  The Ngermecheluch Pier has inspired songs, with both historical chants (Rebetii) and contemporary pieces showcasing its significance to the community.

Homeward Bound

As the day draws to a close, begin your return journey to Koror. Reflect on the cultural treasures you've uncovered, the scenic landscapes you've traversed, and the memories you've created throughout the day.

I’m gonna use IMPAC Tours for my excursions in the country. So far they are quite responsive and I mainly contact them via emails. Can’t wait to enjoy the country with them!

Used IMPAC for a ride to Kayangel, night line fishing and Peleliu excursions. They were professional and serious, so you made a good choice.

If you have some extra time I recommend spending a couple of nights on the island, rather than just going for the day trip. I loved everything about it, especially the food.

Palau Travel Guide – Best DIY Things To Do in Palau (Pacific Island)

Palau — Are you guys familiar with the novel of Michael Crichton’s Sphere? (He is also the author of the Jurassic Park) This novel is a psychological thriller, a science fiction about alien spacecraft discovered in the depth of the ocean. To make the story short- there was a scene in the novel where the event happened involving sea creatures such as sea snakes, giant squids and of course, jellyfish.

Since then I was afraid of jellyfish because I thought all jellyfish are deadly. Then I stumble upon photos of people jumping into a lake packed with million of jellyfish. What the! How come those jellyfish could not sting them?

I researched about the jellyfish lake of Palau, and I learned that these jellyfish lost their sting because of the abundance of eco resources with no risk visit. I was fascinated, and I included the “Swimming with the jellyfish in Palau” in my bucket list.

Why should you visit Palau?

Well If you want to experience extraordinary adventure far from the major cities like New York , London , Paris and Tokyo .

If you want to try a different twist from the famous beaches of Boracay , Palawan , Phuket and Hawaii .

Palau has so many things to offer. Jump to a yacht and sail the Rock Island, Do some watersports like surfing, scuba diving, kayaking and snorkelling. Swim with jellyfish and dolphins. Hiking and trekking in different mountains and falls. Visit national museums and learn some of their one of a kind history, cultures and traditions. Now I realized why the famous television show “Survivor” was held there!

English is widely used and spoken.  Japanese and Filipino tourists & workers were overwhelming. For an English/Filipino/Japanese speaker like me, language was never a problem. There were Filipino and Japanese workers in most of the restaurant, hotels and travel and tours agency. I can call Palau as my home away from home. There might be some problems you might encounter during your stay especially the slow internet connections. You can buy a prepaid internet card, and it is available in some local stores. It cost 10 US dollars which you can use for 7 hours. Pricey? Yes! But you don’t have a choice unless you’re staying in a hotel that provides wi-fi.

Trip Highlights:

We stayed in Airai State next to the central city where the restaurants and shopping centre located in Koror State.

The waterfalls in Ngardmau is an off-the-beaten-track area since it is located deep in the heart of the mountains and worth visiting.

Visa Requirements:

For Filipinos and US citizens, visas are not required. However, you have to make sure that you have a return ticket to show in case the immigration officer asks for it on your arrival in Palau.

Travel tips:

Travelling to Palau can be quite expensive since the currency they use is the US Dollar. A lot of the essential commodities are imported to the country.

Don’t forget your underwater camera as you would surely want to snap photos during your tours.

English is widely spoken in the country.

Itinerary Details:

Airai is a state where the airport and our hotel (Airai Water Paradise Hotel and Spa) is located.  We originally booked it for 26th December to 28th December 2015 for around 400 USD.  But since our flight was cancelled by the airline, United and won’t be flying out until the next day. The hotel desk associate was considerate not to charge us for the first night. This was of course after various emails and notifying them ahead of time that our flight was postponed.

Upon arrival, we were picked up by our driver. The airport transfers were complimentary provided by the hotel. The hotel was quite far from the main city where all the restaurants and shopping centres, however, the hotel also offers a free shuttle service to the main town.

We booked our tours using the hotel’s concierge, and the company we chose was IMPAC. We were informed that they are offering the best deal among the choices. For example, a whole day tour to the Rock Islands, Milky way beach, Jellyfish lake with some considerable time for kayaking cost us 200USD with lunch and drinks included.  This day trip, in my opinion, is worth taking.  It takes you to Palau’s most famous spots, and will let you feel that you got your money’s worth at the end of the day.

We transferred accommodation on 28th December since when we made the hotel booking by late November all 3rd party websites indicated that all hotels in Palau were fully booked. It’s a good thing we have had managed to book an apartment thru Airbnb .  And it’s  located not far from our hotel. The owner of the apartment offered us the use of his van for four days for 120USD. This is how we got around to see more of the island.

We decided to drive around the island to go visit the waterfalls in Ngardmau. It was a good hour drive from Airai, and was worth the drive. I highly recommend for tourists to visit the waterfalls.

The rest of the days we just decided to stay in as we wanted this trip to be a relaxing one with no prepared itinerary beforehand. We wanted Palau to surprise us, and it did.
