Australian songwriter Paul Kelly (born 13 January 1955) is a multi-talented instrumentalist and singer. He is proficient at the guitar and harmonica and his style of music encompasses genres as disparate as bluegrass and dub reggae; however his expertise rests in folk-country.

Kelly was the 6th of 9 children and spent most of his childhood in Adelaide. Though Kelly did not know right away that he wanted to be a musician, he came from a musically inclined family. His maternal grandfather was an Italian speaking Opera singer, who was the leading baritone for the La Scala Opera Company, while his grandmother was the first female symphony orchestra conductor in Australia. After Kelly finished school he developed an interest in writing poetry and short stories and managed to sustain himself by working odd jobs. However he eventually rekindled an interest in the guitar and started playing solo gigs in 1974. He moved to Melbourne in 1976 to form the R&B band the High Rise Bombers. This group did not last long at all and Kelly formed another group called Paul Kelly & the Dots.

With his new formation, Kelly started getting positive recognition almost instantly and was quickly signed to the label Mushroom Records. Through this label he released the two albums “Talk” and “Manila” before breaking up with the Dots and moving to Sydney. Kelly penned his landmark album “Post”, which was also self-funded upon his move to Sydney. With its success he renewed his contract with Mushroom Records and founded another group to support him, The Coloured Girls.

“Post” was met with overwhelming critical acclaim and was declared by Rolling Stone as the best record of 1985 as well as being championed by actor Russell Crowe. Kelly continued the trend of recording records at a fast pace. As “Post” took no longer than two weeks to record, his next album, the 24 track double album “Gossip”, took only a month to cut. This album played an integral role in introducing Kelly to an American audience, and in 1987 a revised version edited to 15 tracks was distributed by A&M Records. The album received high praise from critics and the general public, with music journalist and former The Go-Betweens member Robert Forster calling it an essential roots-rock album.

With the release of “So Much Water, So Close to Home”, Kelly would change the name of his backing band to the Messengers and would also recruit the help of Scott Litt (of R.E.M. fame) to produce it. In order to not sound redundant Kelly separated from his backing band after the release of 1991’s “Comedy”.

Kelly switched gears in the 90s and became involved in an eclectic array of endeavors including acting in and writing material for the play “Funerals and Cruises”, producing the album “Charcoal Lane” for the aboriginal musician Archie Roach, and issuing his first ever book of poetry. He also wrote the soundtrack for the movie “Everynight...Everynight” and in 1995 went on a 7 week US tour with Joe Jackson and Liz Phair.

1997 was a big year for Kelly. This year saw the release of his compilation album “Song’s From the South: Paul Kelly’s Greatest Hits”, which climbed to No. 2 on the album charts and has since went platinum 4 times. Also this was the year in which Kelly won the ARIA award for best male artist. In the late 90s Kelly formed a new band for a brief time called Professor Ratbaggy. This group featured a technological savvy sound and a bent towards dub reggae.

Throughout the 2000s Paul Kelly released albums at his standard incessant pace, putting out a total of 5 albums between 2001 and 2007. In 2012 he released the album “Spring and Fall” to great critical acclaim as well as his documentary “Paul Kelly - Stories of Me”, which traced his 40 year career. Kelly has toured extensively throughout the world and is cited as one of the largest influences on folk-pop culture to come out of Australia.

Live reviews

Tonight it is all about Paul Kelly, an Australian singer songwriter who plays acoustic folk music accompanied by his guitar, and even his harmonica which sits comfortably in a harmonica holder over his shoulders. He starts with a track called “One For The Ages”. One of the things that I really like about Paul Kelly’s voice is that he sings in native Australian accent throughout this whole set. His technique is that of a folk genre and suits his songwriting down to the ground “Cold as Canada”, has a little bit more depth behind it, definitely making it one of those songs that you wonder what he was thinking when he wrote the song. It leaves a lasting impression on this small gathering in this intimate bar, where you can hear a pin drop, and the sounds of drinks being poured in the distance. He finishes with “Aches and Pains”, definitely worth buying his music if you’re into a sort of “slower moving folk music”, with insightful lyrics.

Paul Kelly was mesmerising. His voice is absolutely haunting. My husband and I have waited all our lives to see him and the wait was worth it. We took our teenage daughter and her boyfriend - a huge fan - who are 16 for his birthday and he too was enthralled. The venue was amazing, small and intimate and the sound incredible. Paul played for ages. Charlie Owen, Paul's daughters Maddie and Memphis, and Sweet Jean were also fantastic but the man himself is a true Aussie legend. Thanks Paul,an unforgettable night!

Played whole new albumn which I had none of and was happy with what I heard.

Great walk down memeory lane after that and the show was tight.

Bitterzoet is a great little venue in Amsterdam to see a gig in.

Hope it is not 30 years till I see him again.

About Paul Kelly

Paul Kelly announces 24-date regional tour for July and August

Paul Kelly

  • X (formerly Twitter)

"We want to charge the air around us and change each other and send you home singing into the night!"

You might have heard of this Australian singer-songwriter called Paul Kelly . He's pretty good at writing songs and also quite good at playing them.

After having a quiet 2020 – a short flurry of touring in its opening months, before releasing two albums when live music stopped in its tracks – PK is getting back on the road for just a couple of little shows along the eastern side of the country.

Okay, we'll drop the act.

Paul Kelly is a treasure and you don't need us to tell you that. The tour he's announced this morning is an absolute monster. And the man clearly doesn't care too much for golf, because he just doesn't stop working.

Kelly will have his full band in tow when he hits a string of regional centres this July and August.

They'll play Bowls Clubs, Town Halls, charming old theatres and some pretty sleek new ones too. He'll be as far north as Port Douglas, as south as Hobart, in well-serviced music areas like Cairns and Geelong and less visited spots like Merimbula and Bathurst.

UPDATE 18/5:

As if this news couldn't be any more wonderful, the supports for the tour have been announced and they are of the absolute highest class.

The brilliant Gordi will open the shows in Toowoomba, Gold Coast, Ipswich, Cairns, Port Douglas, Hobart, Warrnambool, Bendigo and Merimbula.

Her Our Two Skins album was one of the most beautiful and exciting records of 2020 and the way she brings these stunning songs to life on the live stage is awe-inspiring.

Those attending the Caloundra, Rockhampton, Mackay, Meeniyan, Geelong, Ballarat, Forster, Coffs Harbour, Tamworth and Yamba shows will be treated to a set from Aussie alt-country star Fanny Lumsden .

Lumsden also had a monumental year in 2020, releasing the acclaimed Fallow and winning a bag of trophies at both the Golden Guitar and ARIA Awards for her troubles. She's a road-warrior and will be right at home playing these towns: make sure you don't miss her.

"The band and crew and I have really missed each other over the last eighteen months as shows after shows were first postponed then cancelled," Kelly said in a statement released this morning.

"We put our toe in the water with a one-off New Year’s Eve performance for TV but now we’re really looking forward to stretching out and playing music night after night.

"We want to see the whites of your eyes, you lovers of sound, joy and fury; we want to charge the air around us and change each other and send you home singing into the night!"

If that doesn't stir you up, you should grab a ticket anyway. We don't like to make a lot of promises, but we are confident that you won't ever regret going to a Paul Kelly show.

Paul Kelly and his band play the following dates through July and August. Tickets are available from Thursday 20 May, or head to his website for pre-sale info.

Thursday 1 July – Kings Theatre, Caloundra (with Fanny Lumsden) Friday 2 July – Empire Theatre, Toowoomba (with Gordi) Saturday 3 July – HOTA Theatre, Gold Coast (with Gordi) Sunday 4 July – Ipswich Civic Centre, Ipswich (with Gordi) Saturday 10 July – Sandstone Point Hotel, Bribie Island (with Missy Higgins, Alex The Astronaut and Andy Golledge) Tuesday 13 July – Pilbeam Theatre, Rockhampton (with Fanny Lumsden) Wednesday 14 July – Mackay Entertainment & Convention Centre, Mackay (with Fanny Lumsden) Thursday 15 July – Cairns Performing Arts Centre, Cairns (with Gordi) Saturday 17 July – Yacht Club, Port Douglas (with Gordi) Tuesday 20 July – Meeniyan Town Hall, Meeniyan (with Fanny Lumsden) Wednesday 21 July – Meeniyan Town Hall, Meeniyan (with Fanny Lumsden) Friday 23 July – Odeon Theatre, Hobart (with Gordi) Tuesday 27 July – Lighthouse Theatre, Warrnambool (with Gordi) Wednesday 28 July – Lighthouse Theatre, Warrnambool (with Gordi) Thursday 29 July – Ulumbarra Theatre, Bendigo (with Gordi) Friday 30 July – Costa Hall, Geelong (with Fanny Lumsden) Saturday 31 July – Her Majesty’s Theatre, Ballarat (with Fanny Lumsden) Wednesday 4 August – Club Sapphire, Merimbula (with Gordi) Thursday 5 August – Anita’s Theatre, Thirroul Saturday 7 August – Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre Sunday 8 August – Civic Theatre, Newcastle Wednesday 11 August – Club Forster, Forster (with Fanny Lumsden) Thursday 12 August – Hoey Moey, Coffs Harbour (with Fanny Lumsden) Friday 13 August – Tamworth War Memorial Town Hall (with Fanny Lumsden) Saturday 14 August – Yamba Bowling Club (with Fanny Lumsden)

LIVE REVIEW: RED HOT SUMMER TOUR featuring Paul Kelly, Bernard Fanning, Missy Higgins, Mark Seymour, Ian Moss & Troy Cassar-Daley and Vika & Linda

Sandalford winery, wa - saturday 18th march 2023.

21 March 2023 Rossco Hunter

paul kelly tour merchandise

It’s a warm autumn day in Perth and today has been earmarked in 14,000+ people’s calendars for quite sometime – since the date was locked in for this amazing venue, the beautiful Sandalford Winery. Kick off is scheduled for 1pm – the gates will open and the flood of eager music aficionados will trickle down the hill, finding the path of least resistance to secure their piece of real-estate to witness this Australian rich performance. Once their location is locked in, the trek begins back up the hill to secure sufficient hydration before Vika & Linda open their account.

paul kelly tour merchandise

Vika & Linda burst onto the stage with a ton of energy and thanked the crowd for their amazing support. Two power-house female vocalists from my era (Black Sorrows), rocking out matching outfits with their unique twists a-typical of siblings. They share stories of their musical journey from times gone by travelling the world with the Black Sorrows, working with both Paul Kelly, Mark Seymour and carving out their successful sisterly voyage.  It was a generous setlist consisting of new and older tracks – highlight for me was “Never Let Me Go”. That song is one of my personal favourites, with both Vika and Linda sounding just as crisp as the version I have in my collection (Harley and Rose album 1990) – a real tribute to just how good they are. The bar had been set really high!

paul kelly tour merchandise

It is a rare moment to capture two different genres crossing over live on stage, especially when those genres are headlined by two of the most iconic Australian performers that I have ever seen. Troy Cassar-Daley and Ian Moss . I have one huge problem with this act – a glaring issue… both artists were on each side of the stage and I only have one set of eyes. How do I focus on both amazing artists – the fear of missing out was intense….. who’s idea was this? Talk about first world problems. The chemistry on stage was electric, with each artist bringing their own personality, but they were keen on one upping the other in a game of musical tag. The banter was hilarious and genuine (particularly around the merch). Highlight for me was the version of “Bow River”. Both Troy and Ian are spectacular to watch and compliment each other really well … we off to a flying start!!!

paul kelly tour merchandise

Up next was Mark Seymour , and just when you thought you could not get anymore people into the standing only section of Red Hot Summer, the Mark Seymour fans said, “Hold my beer” with the section packed tighter than a parachute. From beyond the front rail it felt that we had just let in another 5000 more people, to the point that punters had to breathe in rhythm because of the lack of space. Mark delivered hits from his solo back catalogue right through to the Hunters & Collectors, keeping the faithful away from the bar and singing in tune. Highlight for me was the 14,000+ sing-along of “When The River Runs Dry”, the 1989 classic and there was no one in that winery that was not singing along – a real testament to just how good Mark is and how he has influenced so many people’s music taste.

paul kelly tour merchandise

Like a cool Autumn breeze Missy Higgins floats across the stage – smile brimming from ear to ear, you just can’t help smiling as well, she is so infectious – we all know we are if for an absolute treat. Rocking a blue jumpsuit, she looks stunning and we all know Missy is ready to put on a stellar show. Perched in front of her trusty set of keys Missy gets to work quickly, conversing with her fans about her tour so far, her appreciation for the moment and her private life (her recent divorce) paying special mention to her recent tattoo and its significance. Missy shares with us her affinity with WA and the special place it holds in her heart for the music that she writes. It is a personal set that everyone loves. Highlight for me was “Special Two”, its powerfulness shared among the countless fans.

paul kelly tour merchandise

Bernard Fanning enters the entertainment arena – there is a certain aura about him, joking with the fans you can tell he is excited to be here. It feels like he is a family member that has been away for so many years and we finally have him home, we are ecstatic to see him and hear of his tales of musical grandeur. Bernard gives the fans what they crave – the old, the new and the powder……I know there is not enough time of his set to give me (personally) every song I love from this talented champion but that’s ok. He sung, he strummed and he stunned!!!! Lyrically he delivered on point with little reprieve and all I know is that massive bar up the back would have been empty for his whole set……empty!!! Highlight for me, and it’s a tough one but  I would have to say “Wish You Well” off one of the most poignant albums for me “Tea & Sympathy” – truly awe inspiring.

paul kelly tour merchandise

And then there was Paul…… WOW ……I have always loved Paul Kelly . There is something about his music , his story telling, his personal spin, which allows to him to guide you through the Paul Kelly Experience. His music is more than just notes or lyrics…. It feels like every song he has written has a piece of Paul in it. It was a path that everyone in the audience was willing to walk – we sung, we laughed, we reminisced, and we felt the every inch of the festival commute. The sold out Red Hot Summer crowd appreciated the technical prowess of such a melodious master. There was no single highlight for me….. the whole set was a highlight – from “How to Make Gravy”, “From Little Thing, Big Things Grow”, “To Her Door”, “Every Fucking City”, “Bradman” plus a heap more. He topped my experience and I was buzzing all the way home.

paul kelly tour merchandise

Red Hot Summer 2023 is like sitting at a table with all your favourite meals (an amazing spread) and it is all you can eat – guaranteed to put you in a food comma, the music will fill your soul and RED HOT SUMMER is the 5 star Michelin chef…….. this event is always high on my social calendar, it is a MUST for any serious music lover.  Make sure you secure your tickets and pencil it in your diary so you can get your music fill.

Bon Appetit!

The Rockpit would like to thank Red Hot Summer , Zaccaria Concerts & Touring & Hot Off The Press for the access and experience.

Phil "Fang" Volk

paul kelly tour merchandise

A stunning 2-CD Set – marking the historical return of a long, lost rock band from the late 1960's.

Original core members of Paul Revere & the Raiders – Fang, Drake, & Smitty – recorded three albums for RCA Victor before disappearing into obscurity. The music remains as a testament to the "leap of faith" these three rockers embarked upon, despite the risk of leaving all the fame & popularity behind that they had enjoyed as original Raiders in their zenith. This package will include a complete biography of Brotherhood in a beautiful 24 page color booklet with many never-before-seen photos, and a tribute message written by the last, living founding member of Brotherhood, Phil "Fang" Volk. Remastered and sounding better than ever, this music will surely resonate with young and old alike as you enjoy the creative journey taken by this band of brothers at a time in the late 60's when music was exploding in so many new directions, and relevant social messages & protests were hanging on every lyric, and the sound of every edgy chord rang out with the angst of the ever changing tumultuous times. It's been 45 years since this music originally hit the streets. The songs are as relevant as ever...

This is BROTHERHOOD – THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS

Hitting the streets 2/4/14 and available onAmazon.com, I-tunes.com, CDbaby.com and many other music sites

"...meet you on the other side of Forever..."

I've lost my dear friend, my Raider buddy, and the music world has lost a guitar icon.

Drake and I met over 50 years ago in Nampa, Idaho. He was a city boy from Chicago, and I was a city boy from Los Angeles. Our families transplanted us to the farmlands of Idaho, where we became fast and loyal friends, and aspiring musicians. I had just got a guitar for Christmas (1959) from my parents, and Drake and I set out to conquer the world with our music. Although we weren't sure how we were going to do that, we had a dream that some day it would happen. Five years later, the dream was happening. Drake and I were filming a TV show with Dick Clark called "Where The Action Is." Some of the guests artists were Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons, Jan & Dean, The Supremes, Bobby Rydell and Frankie Avalon. These artists were already well on their way to super stardom, and our little rock band, Paul Revere & the Raiders, was now riding the same "glory train" with them and the adventure of a lifetime had just started for me and Drake. Several national tours followed, along with 5 gold albums and 12 hit singles, before Drake, Smitty and I broke out on our own to form The Brotherhood, who produced 3 albums for RCA Victor. The last tour Drake, Smitty and I did together for the Raiders in March-April of 1967 was a massive success. We played almost every major arena in the country, and on many occasions had double-billing with The Beachboys & the Rolling Stones. Our music dreams that Drake & I had formed way back in the farmlands of Idaho, surrounded by sugar beet fields, corn fields, and golden fields of wheat & barley, had come to pass – we were actually living the dream. We were "brothers" in music, and The Brotherhood was a natural transition after the Raiders broke up. It was always our resolve to write music that would promote peace, love and unity in the world. We wanted to create music that had a real positive message. Drake and I became a very prolific songwriting team. At the end of that last Raider tour, I got a phone call from home that my older brother George had just died in Viet Nam. Drake was the first person I told, and he held on to me while I broke down in tears. He was a true and loyal friend. Drake always considered my family his "second family" because he spent more time at my place then anywhere else. George had helped him learn to play guitar, and because of our close friendship Drake was more or less "adopted" into our family When my mom passed away in 2006, he shed so many tears as if it was his own mom. I've always appreciated how much love Drake had for my brothers and sisters and my parents. We all will miss him greatly, as we do "Smitty" who we lost in 2001.

Drake leaves behind his loving and loyal wife Sandra of 37 years, his mom Charle, his brother Jeff, his sister Lori, and his two sons David and Darby. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them in their time of grief.

Drake Maxwell Levin also leaves us a stunning and soulful legacy of music as one of the seminal pioneers of some awesome rock & roll music and some of the most memorable guitar solos during the "glory days" of the 1960's.

One of my last conversations with Drake at the hospital in San Francisco was awkward and difficult. It's hard to know what to say when you know you won't see your buddy again, (that is, until the New World and the resurrection that Jesus promised in the Bible) I finally mustered the courage to say: "...alright my brother, I'll see you down the road..." I heard him say as I walked from the room, holding back the tears: "I'll be waitin' for ya..."
