Roughly 335 days ago, my dad dragged me into adulthood kicking and screaming. Finally, after several long months of personal finance training, the time had come to sign up for my first ever credit card.

It wasn’t so much that I didn’t understand the concept of credit than it was what credit represented. Credit cards are for old people — people who have their act together enough to pay bills and make adult purchases. I, on the other hand, decidedly did not have my act together.

I was 22 and still living with my parents just six months removed from graduation. I’d gotten along fine in college with cold hard cash and a trusty debit card (well, I was broke , but isn’t that part of the fun?). Minus my shiny new job at GOLF, I wasn’t measurably different from the person I’d been in college. Why on earth would I enroll in a credit card?

As my loving father — a 30-year financial services veteran — ever-so-kindly explained, I was entirely wrong. Cards aren’t one-size-fits-all, there are all types that fit all kinds of people, from the financially mortified (me) to the financially mindful.

Annual Fee: $95

There’s a reason the Chase Sapphire Preferred card is the preferred choice of golf fans everywhere. As the official card of the PGA Championship, Chase gives cardmembers highly discounted ticket prices, offers to super-luxe hotel and viewing experiences, and access to an exclusive, cardmember-only tent on the tournament grounds. Annual Fee: $550

It’s the most expensive card on the list, but that’s because it also lays claim to the widest breadth of benefits. As for the golf, members earn a host of benefits thanks to American Express’s partnership with the USGA. It might have the least non-golf utility of any card on this list, but the PGA Tour Cash Rewards Mastercard is the single-best *golf* credit card on the market. Once enrolled, you’ll earn three percent cash back on gas, two percent on dining and one percent on all other purchases you make with the card — but that’s just on the “regular” stuff.

Golfers earn two free tickets to a PGA Tour event of their choice if they make $95 in purchases in the first 90 days with the card. In addition, cardholders earn discounted greens fees, merchandise and exclusive opportunities at TPC Courses across the U.S.

Annual Fee: $250

You’d be hard-pressed to find a better balance of value and payoff for the golf traveler in your life than the Amex Gold Card . With all the same USGA benefits listed above, Gold Card holders also receive gluttony of travel-related offers (from hotels and car benefits to 3x points back on travel-related purchases) for half the price of the Platinum Card. The biggest downside of the Gold Card is that (unlike the Platinum Card), users have to pay for access to American Express lounges in airports. 5) Mariott Bonvoy Boundless

If you’re a business traveler, you know the benefit of a Bonvoy card . Free nights, upgrades, and discounted stays are just some of the perks that join those who are frequently on the road. For golfers, the perks only grow through Marriott Golf Links — an extension of the Marriott Bonvoy Rewards programs. Earn points toward your Bonvoy rewards by booking tee times at associated Marriott course, or use your Bonvoy points to pay for your round or for golf instruction at the Mariott Golf Academies in Orlando and Palm Desert, Calif.

Here are 6 ways to earn a PGA Tour card

In a lot of ways, getting a PGA Tour card is like winning the lottery. The path is simple, but the odds are against you. If you beat those odds, however, the payout is handsome.

To play as a member on the PGA Tour, you must have a PGA Tour card. Players earn their card by accomplishing one of several requirements. Here’s a breakdown of just how to earn a PGA Tour card, and six ways to snag one.

1. PGA Tour Q-School

PGA Tour Q-School used to be a direct path to the PGA Tour. Then Q-School stopped giving players PGA Tour cards, giving them status on the Korn Ferry Tour instead, where they could play for spots on the PGA Tour over the course of an entire season. But now, just like in years past, players can earn a PGA Tour card through Q-School and head straight to the PGA Tour. However, only the top five finishers from the final stage of Q-School earn PGA Tour cards and get to head directly to the PGA Tour.

2. Korn Ferry Tour Points

The most direct path to the PGA Tour is through the Korn Ferry Tour. While gaining Korn Ferry Tour status is no breeze in itself, once there, players have multiple avenues to earn their PGA Tour card.

There are 30 PGA Tour cards up for grabs through the Korn Ferry Tour each year. The top 30 players from the Korn Ferry Tour's season-long standings after the KFT Championship earn cards.

Getting into the Korn Ferry Tour is a process in itself, which can be accomplished through Korn Ferry Tour Qualifying School , or via the Forme Tour , Mackenzie (Canadian) Tour, or the PGA Tour Latinoamerica.

3. Korn Ferry Tour Three-Win Promotion

Korn Ferry Tour players can jump directly to the PGA Tour through an exemption known as the Three-Win Promotion . This promotion is exactly what it sounds like, after three Korn Ferry Tour wins in one season, a player gains his PGA Tour card.

The three-win promotion has proven to be a tough route to the big tour, as only 12 players have accomplished the feat since 1997.

4. PGA Tour Special Temporary Membership

Players can bypass the Korn Ferry Tour and jump straight to the PGA Tour by gaining PGA Tour Special Temporary Membership, then parlaying that into a PGA Tour card.

The PGA Tour reserves a small number of spots each week for non-Tour members through sponsor exemptions and Monday qualifiers. Non-members who compete in PGA Tour events through these avenues and perform well enough can earn Special Temporary Membership by accumulating the amount of FedExCup points equal to the player who finished 150th on the FedExCup list the previous season.

Once a player has accepted Special Temporary Membership, they can accept unlimited sponsor exemptions into PGA Tour events and can earn their card by finishing in the top 125 of the FedExCup points list during the regular season.

Without Special Temporary Membership, non-members can only accept up to seven sponsor exemptions and compete in up to 12 PGA Tour events in a season.

Players on a Special Temporary Membership are not eligible for the FedExCup playoffs.

5. PGA Tour U Gets College Golfers to the PGA Tour

Through PGA Tour U , the PGA Tour has removed some hurdles for the top collegiate players who begin their transition into the professional ranks when their amateur careers end.

Top collegiate players in the final year of their college careers earn ranking points based on their performance in the NCAA Division I championship, PGA Tour events, major championships, and the Dubai Desert Classic. At the end of the season, five PGA Tour University first-team and second-team honorees are identified, along with 10 PGA Tour University third-team players. 

The top player earns PGA TOUR membership for the rest of the season, plus the followig season. The top five players earn Korm Ferry Tour membership for the rest of the season, a spot in the Final Stage of Q-School, and the opportunity to accept unlimited sponsor exemptions into PGA Tour events throug the following season.

Nos. 6-10 earn conditional Korn Ferry Tour status for the current season, an exemption into the North American portion of the PGA TOUR Americas schedule, and an exemption into Second Stage of Q-School.

The 10 third-team honorees get exemptions to the North America Swing of the PGA TOUR Americas and exemptions into the Second Stage of Q-School.

6. Win a PGA Tour Event or Major Championship

The fastest way to earn a PGA Tour card is also the least likely. Anybody who wins a PGA Tour event gets an immediate two-year PGA Tour exemption. This means that any non-member who gets into the field at a PGA Tour event via a sponsor exemption or Monday qualifier, and goes on to win that event, gets their PGA Tour card.

While yes, this path is extremely rare, it's exactly what Nick Dunlap did in 2024. He entered a PGA Tour event, the American Express, as an amateur, and despite the astronomica odds, won the tournament. Shortly after, Dunlap took advantage of his two-plus year PGA Tour exemption by turning pro.

Major champions get even more luxury, securing a five-year exemption to both the PGA Tour and European Tour. Three of the four major championships each year reserve spots for amateur players , meaning that theoretically an amateur could win the Masters, U.S. Open or Open Championship and secure their PGA Tour card for the next five years.

Benefits of a Tour Card

By having a PGA Tour card, a golfer can play in PGA Tour events. Many players also receive sponsor endorsements and advertising contracts. The PGA Tour card provides the player the opportunity to win large purses in tournaments . Players who make the cut in routine PGA Tour events generally cash at least a five-figure check, with that amount increasing with higher-stature events and major championships.

In 1965, the first PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament (called Q-School) was held and John Schlee won the event. In 1968 and 1969 and from 1975 to 1981, there were two tournaments each year.

Until 2013, Q-School was used to grant membership to the PGA Tour. From 2013 to 2023, Q-School served as a gateway to the Korn Ferry Tour, with PGA Tour Cards handed out through the Korn Ferry Tour regular season and finals.

Misconceptions

Many people think that if a player holds a PGA Tour Card, he can play in any event on the PGA tour. However, new PGA tour players are eligible for tournaments but players commit to tournaments based on their priority ranking. Players with lower priority rankings can only play an event when it's not already full by the time they have a chance to commit.

Went to the PGA Tour Superstore. The store was extremely clean and well organized. There is something there for every budget - from a large selection of used clubs to the latest, top of the line, clubs. The staff was extremely helpful. A young man named Adam was extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and patient. I also entered a tournament in the Trackman Practice Bays. This was run by a man named Danny. The tournament was extremely well organized and fun with prizes for all! I am extremely impressed by everything - from sales to the practice bays. I've played at several different indoor places and this is by far the most affordable. They used Trackman and it was extremely accurate. This is by far the best golf store in the area. I will be back!

Tonight I went into the PGA Tour Superstore in Orland and was blown away from the moment I walked in. The store was recently opened and everything was top shelf, including one of the club fitters named Adam. He patiently walked me through a variety of clubs to analyze my swing and helped me hone in on what clubs would suit me best. He broke down several data points and intricately explained how they were relevant to each brand of clubs. The only thing he didn't do was hit the ball for me. This is the hardest game on earth but Adam helped me get one step closer to piecing together the right tools for what I am hoping is a great golf season. I will be coming back in the near future with my wife to show her this experience. Thanks to the friendly staff!

Charley Hoffman will have to postpone his ski vacation. He earned a trip to The Riviera Country Club instead.

“That’s moved you in,” a PGA TOUR communications official told Hoffman.

“Did it?” Hoffman said, showing a smile that had been absent as he answered the first four questions from reporters. “That’s awesome. I'm excited about that. I guess I'm playing next week and not going skiing.”

Hoffman, Grayson Murray, Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Kevin Yu clinched four of the spots as the top FedExCup points earners across the last four Full-Field Events — the Sony Open in Hawaii, The American Express, the Farmers Insurance Open and the WM Phoenix Open — not otherwise exempt. Matthieu Pavon earned the fifth spot, though the Frenchman did not commit to play in The Genesis Invitational. As a result, Justin Thomas , who finished sixth in the Aon Swing 5 standings, received the final spot.

But it’s Hoffman who highlights the group. After missing The Genesis Invitational in 2023 for the first time in 16 years, the California native will return thanks to his play at the WM Phoenix Open. It was a throwback performance from the 47-year-old, a reminder that Hoffman was once one of the most consistent golfers in the world. He made the FedExCup Playoffs in 15 straight seasons and racked up more than $30 million in career earnings. He won four times on the PGA TOUR from 2007 to 2016.

The eight-year drought nearly snapped Sunday at TPC Scottsdale. If not for Taylor catching fire, birdieing five of the last six holes he played, the drought would have ended in fitting fashion – Hoffman, famous for his WM sponsorship, winning the WM Phoenix Open.

Hoffman will continue searching for that win, but he’s found his game. Hoffman shot 64-64 on the weekend to finish runner-up. He fired a back-nine 32 on Sunday, including a highlight eagle on the par-5 13th that gave Hoffman the lead. He added birdies on 14 and 15 to remain at the top. He holed a birdie putt on the first playoff hole to keep the tournament alive. Hoffman did not lose the tournament. Taylor won it.

Hoffman earned 300 FedExCup points with the finish and jumped to 25th in the standings, his highest rank since September 2021. He finished outside the top 125 in the last two seasons.

“I didn't really falter, so I've got to give Nick credit,” Hoffman said. “ I love the juices. I love competing. This builds a little fire in the belly. I definitely want to be back here.”

His next chance is an unexpected one at Riviera. He didn’t think he would be there but never gave up hope. This winter, he asked Tiger Woods for a sponsor exemption, but they were all taken.

“So I said, I'll play my way in,” Hoffman said. “I guess I did.”

He’s not the only one.

Murray won the Sony Open in Hawaii to comfortably finish in the Aon Swing 5, with Bezuidenhout finishing runner-up at The American Express to grab another spot. Yu notched a T3 at The American Express and a T6 at the Farmers Insurance Open to earn his second Signature Event start of the season. He finished T58 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Thomas snuck into the final spot with a strong back-nine on Sunday of the WM Phoenix Open. Thomas birdied No. 13, 15 and 17 to card a 3-under round of 68, jump up into a tie for 12th and edge out Stephan Jaeger in the standings.

The 70-player field at Riviera includes 49 of the top 50 on the 2023 FedExCup, Nos. 51-60 on the 2023 FedExCup Fall standings, the top finisher on the 2023 Race to Dubai not otherwise exempt (Nicolai Højgaard), the Aon Swing 5, tournament winners not otherwise exempt (Nick Dunlap) and four sponsor exemptions. Pavon and Justin Rose are the only golfers who are eligible but not in the field.
