At Carnival, we create FUN and MEMORABLE vacations, and our Photo Team captures these memories for our guests to enjoy long after their cruise is over! Working around the ship, taking pictures of our guests at backdrops o the promenade deck, in the Dining Rooms, or on the gangway, our Photographers are there to capture the FUN! You will be not only a great photographer but also have upselling skills to hit sales and photo capture targets by encouraging guests to take pictures with you.   

As with all of our team members, you’ll be a highly visible FUN ambassador and will constantly interact with our guests and help them with questions. The vacation experience we promise our guests will start with you!   

EXPERIENCE:

• Minimum 1 year of experience in a photographer-related position

POSITION FUNCTIONS:

• Photograph CCL guests involved in ship and tour activities throughout the cruise
• Produce quality photographic products for sale to CCL guests
• Sell photo department-generated products and services to CCL guests  
• Interact with CCL guests, onboard staff and fellow crew members
• Will shoot gangways, embarkation, deck, dining room, couples and costumes
• Will help with the set-ups of portrait studios and photo props
• Proper care and maintenance of photographic equipment
• Effective use of perspective and composition ideals.  
• Application and use of photographic equipment, including camera body controls, zone focus technique, flash/ lighting ratios, etc.  
• Communicate effectively (in English), projecting a warm and friendly personality  
• Be aware of waste and try to conserve photographic materials.  
• Train on digital captures systems such as Sherlock as applied on digital on demand and hybrid vessels  
• Maintenance of production equipment and will help keep photo lab clean and organized  
• Display of photos in the gallery and will help to keep it well organized and clean
• Assistance in stocking and storing albums, folios and all related items of photo department
• Adherence to company policy in regards to proper use and handling of Silver Recovery System
• Suggest reprints (copies) and additional services to passengers, such as film developing services
• Be helpful and courteous
• Help to clean and organize the photo gallery and sales area
• Correctly shoot wedding videos  
• Perform any task deemed appropriate by the Photo Manager, such as wearing costumes, etc.  

Undergo assigned trainings to develop skills & knowledge for the future positions.

Report any equipment malfunction, difficulties & concerns to the supervisor on duty.

Follow additional duties, other than listed in the job description, assigned by management due to the operational needs/shortages/changes.

Ensure beverage stations are full at all times and cleaned daily.

Engage in light conversations with guests always greet them with a smile.

You should have at least 1-2 years of experience in a similar role.

Advanced level proficiency in English is required.

Customer service experience gained in a similar role is required.

You must pass a Seafarers Medical Fitness Examination.

What Does a Cruise Ship Photographer Do?

Your main job will be taking photographs of the passengers. You will be taking pictures of the entire journey and will be taking special care to get pictures of the ship during embarkation. You will also be taking photos of special events, dinner parties, arrival in ports, and so much more.

Entry-level cruise ship photographers can work toward earning a position as an Assistant Photo Manager and eventually, Photo Manager , where your earnings can increase significantly. Those who wish to make this their career will benefit from continuing to move up the ladder. Being promoted requires great job performance and a willingness to continue to learn new skills.

How Much Time Off Do I Get?

Time off is something that people don’t get a lot of when they work on a cruise ship. You should know that an average cruise ship contract will last anywhere between four and eight months, working every day without a single day off. You do get all those days off in a lump sum when you go on vacation, so for a 4-month contract, expect to have 4 weeks of (unpaid) vacation.

Be prepared to work quite a bit when you sign on to work on a cruise ship as a photographer. Working on a cruise ship requires long hours but it doesn’t mean that you’re going to be working 24 hours per day. When you are enjoying your time off in a public area, you don’t need to take photos of passengers but you need to be on your best behavior. After work, you can hang out in the crew-only areas such as the crew bar, crew pool, and crew mess, or go off the ship when in port.

Tips on How to Prepare for the Interview

When you’re getting ready to interview for this position, it’s going to be important to show the interviewer your personality. Picking employees for a cruise ship is about finding people that have the right personalities to succeed in this fast-paced, customer-focused environment. You’re going to want to show the interviewer that you’re a motivated individual with a very positive outlook on life and can work under pressure.

Do you also recruit for concessionaires/concessions companies?

We work with Shipboard Services through which all our contracts with the cruise lines are signed.

What types of jobs do you recruit for?

We specifically recruit photographers or video operators for cruise lines. We call them Image Creators.

What services do you offer the people who apply through your company?

We meet with them and organize everything including getting them their contract through Shipboard. We pay a portion of the costs for the Image Creator to get to the ship, pay for overnight accommodation that might be needed, and medical insurance, as well as the room and meals on board.

How can someone best make a great first impression with you and your agency?

What advice can you offer about resumes / CVs?

The main thing we look for in a CV is clarity, and one of the most common mistakes is that we get CVs and applications without photos.

Are there any common traits people should have in order to get hired, and then to succeed in the cruise industry?

There are 4 main traits that applicants should have, but we will still look at those who possess just one or two. You need to be able to work as a social photographer taking portraits and family shots of the passengers whenever you can on board, which you will then sell to them. Good photography skills and experience are required for this position. This job can also require you to have top video skills and understand how to make a DVD.

Aside from these technical skills, you also need to show that you are a good sales person, as you will be responsible for getting the passengers to buy the photos or DVDs that you make.

What are the best pieces of advice you would give someone who's starting to look for their first job on a cruise ship?

I would suggest that applicants make sure that they have all their documents in order right from the beginning and submit a great CV. This is the initial contact you have and we like to see how professional the candidates are before meeting them. You should also be prepared for anything. Do a lot of research to find out what will be required from you working on a cruise ship, and don't just research the job, but look at what each cruise line requires.

What are the typical terms of employment offered?

Image Creators can work on small vessels that take 7 to 14 day cruises and larger ones where a cruise can last up to 90 days, however, contracts are typically 8 months. You will find that you are required to work between 6 and 14 hours per day, averaging 10 - 12, and this is working every day. The salary works on commission basis, with the cruise line offering the photographic team a percentage of the total sales.

Interviewing Advice

What advice would you give people to help them prepare for interviews with your company and with cruise lines?

To interview with our company you should come dressed well and look professional and presentable. Also, make sure that you bring all the relevant documents needed, and examples of your work.

What is the interview and selection process like for your positions?

First we review the CVs that are sent to us, after which we contact those who are successful for an interview with us. If this interview is successful the candidate will be offered a contract.

Can you describe the job placement process?

Once we interview the candidates and they have been accepted, we organize for them to get a contract signed and then they wait to be called by the cruise line they will be working for. There are levels of employment, with the team being led by the manager. Under the manager you will get tiers all the way down to Junior Image Creator.

Does your company provide any pre-hire training?

We offer courses in which we train the participants on land before departing, but we also continue to train on board and whenever there are new progressions in the industry, we update the Image Creators as soon as possible.

What contact do you have with your candidates after they accept work with a cruise line?

Well, as mentioned above, we will continue to provide additional training as the Image Creators progress in their career and as industry technology advances.

If you had to guess, what percentage of employees on cruise ships were hired through staffing agencies like yours?

Well, since we are specialists and we only hire photographers (there are normally between 2 and 14 in a team), it is a fairly small percentage.

What are some common misperceptions people have about working on cruise ships?

Well, in our specific industry people usually don't realize that they have to have their own digital equipment, although the cruise ships are set up with a mini-lab and other equipment on board including a video editing system. We do understand that recent applicants do not have the means to buy expensive equipment which is why we offer a special purchasing scheme where you can pay the equipment off.

Another thing that people don't realize is that the work they are doing will entail sales. You will not just take picture of people or video them, but the way you will get paid is to actually sell these photos or DVDs to them.

Generally, people normally come to us with the idea that they are going to have a fun holiday and take some photos of people. Well, this is not the case. You will be working hard and will need to work night or day depending on what the cruise line requires. Don't get me wrong, you will have fun and probably love the experience, but just be prepared to also put in the effort.

Coordinating special events taking place all over the ship and providing best quality services for guests. Highly qualified in all aspects of photo department operations. Photography and managerial experience, leadership skills and excellent command of English required. Cruise ship experience is a plus. Salary: $2500-3600 per month.

Photography – Assistant Photo Manager

Overseeing the day to day operations of the photo department aboard the cruise ship. In charge of the photo gallery and retail photo shop set up. Responsible for the proper set up of all photo equipment around the cruise ship for casual, special events, portraits and weddings photo shoots. Assigning shore-side and land tours duties to ship’s photographers. Involved in on-the-job training of new recruits. Highly qualified in all aspects of photo department operations. Photography and managerial experience, leadership skills and excellent command of English required. Cruise ship experience is a plus.

 Salary: $2200-3300 per month.

Photography – Photographer

Responsible for shooting pictures of guests on various location on and off the ship. Shooting special events, private parties. Photo shoots during accompanying passengers on tours. Working as photo retail sales consultant at the ships photo gallery and retail photo shop- selling photos, albums, frames, accessories and accepting passengers photo print orders. Excellent command of English, degree in photography or relative experience required. Image processing and printing experience is a plus.

 Salary: $2000-2800 per month.

Photography – Junior Photographer

Working in the Photo Gallery and Photo Retail Shop, selling images of guests and retail photo products. Participating in various types of photo shoots. Eventually assuming the functions of a photographer with associated duties- land tours, special events and portrait photography. Qualification and training within the photography field are a plus. Excellent command of English. Responsive, creative and interested in performing as a photographer.

 Salary: $1200-1500 per month.

Photography – Cruise Ship Videographer

Responsible for shooting video footage of passengers and events taking place on the cruise ship and ashore with the purpose of selling the videos at the end of the cruise. Accompanying and filming passengers on various shore excursions. On sea days filming different activities taking place on the cruise ship- games around the swimming pool area, captain’s welcome party, formal nights, dance parties. Involved in filming weddings that take place aboard the ship. Responsible for shooting training videos for other departments’ training programs and promotional videos for the cruise. Strong audio-visual background and college degree or equivalent work experience are required. Excellent command of English.

 Salary: $2300-3400 per month.

Cruise Staff Department

Our Cruise Staff make a dramatic impact on each guest’s cruise experience by conducting a variety of onboard activities for them to enjoy. Activities range from trivia games and contests to themed parties and dance lessons. This team is also responsible for hosting an array of special events onboard, including guest performers, group exercise classes, and even the occasional conga line.

Junior Assistant Cruise Director

The Junior Assistant Cruise Director is an entry-level position on the Cruise Staff team. This team provides fun and exciting activities for guests, like trivia games, Zumba® classes, ice sculpture demonstrations, dance lessons, and arts and crafts. In this role your goal is to help the Cruise Staff provide a premium entertainment package and make our guests’ vacations memorable. You contribute to these memories by actively participating in all events with enthusiasm and dedication.

Requirements Applicants must have a minimum of two years’ experience in the entertainment and hospitality field, including direct experience hosting activities for large groups. Confident/strong microphone experience is required. Entertainment talents such as dancing, singing, stage performance, hosting sports events, and arts and crafts are a plus, but candidates must be willing to participate in any/all such activities onboard as part of a team environment.

Assistant Cruise Director

In addition to the regular Cruise Staff responsibilities, the Assistant Cruise Director-DJ provides entertaining, engaging, and memorable DJ and emcee services throughout various shipboard venues.

Requirements Applicants must have a minimum of two years' DJ experience at corporate parties, weddings, or similar events; experience hosting karaoke; and a thorough knowledge of a variety of musical genres from 50s classics to today’s popular music. Applicants must include a Web link to their demo reel for consideration.

Deck & Technical

The Deck department is overseen by the Staff Captain and is responsible for navigating the ship as well as managing all safety-related matters, including environment and public health. This team works closely with the Technical department to ensure that all equipment is well maintained and meets international laws and regulations. The Technical department includes a variety of positions that range from entry-level roles, such as Deck Clerk, Trainees, and Cadets; to highly qualified seafarer roles, such as Environmental Officer, Security officers, and navigating officers all the way through to the ship’s Captain.

The Technical department is responsible for the efficient and cost-effective operation and maintenance of all onboard machinery and equipment, covering a wide range of areas including power generation and propulsion; heating and air conditioning; and deck, hotel, and entertainment support systems. The Technical department’s mission is to provide a safe, secure, and environmentally sound operation at all times. It is a dynamic department with a wide variety of roles and career opportunities.

Deck Department Senior Watchkeeping Officers

Senior Watchkeepers are responsible for safe navigation of the ship, maintaining a 24-hour watch by working a four-hours-on/eight-hours-off rotation. Every ship employs three Senior Watchkeepers in the ranks of 1st Officer, Senior 2nd Officer, and 2nd Officer to cover the three watches. Each watch is supported by a Junior Watchkeeper in the rank of 3rd Officer.

Requirements Applicants must hold an unlimited Chief Mates Certificate of Competence recognized by the UK Marine & Coastguard Agency and Bermuda Maritime Authority.

Environmental Officer

The Environmental Officer is responsible for ensuring the highest possible levels of compliance by shipboard staff with all established environmental standards, in line with the company’s core values.

Requirements Applicants must be a licensed Deck or Engineer officer holding a minimum of either a 2nd Deck Officer or 2nd Engineer Certificate of Competence, or at least five years' experience with environmental management systems.

Security Officer

Security Officers are responsible for leading a team of security personnel in monitoring guest and crew activities, investigating security matters that arise, and promptly reporting and correcting security issues in order to maintain a safe and secure shipboard environment in line with the company’s core values.

Requirements Applicants must have a minimum of five years’ experience as a law enforcement officer or service in a maritime military/LE organization. Criminal Investigation experience is preferred as well as knowledge of ISPS code and experience with security surveillance and screening equipment.

Technical Department Senior Watchkeeping Officers

Senior Watchkeepers are responsible for maintaining a 24-hour watch in the ship’s Engine Room, by working a four-hours-on/eight-hours-off rotation. Depending on vessel size, each ship employs either three or four Senior Watchkeepers in the ranks of 1st Engineer and 2nd Engineer.

Hotel Services Engineer

3rd Engineer

Public Health Officer

As a Public Health Officer you will monitor shipboard public health and infection control procedures and assist both shipboard Management and Corporate Public Health Director in overseeing the implementation and compliance with shipboard prevention and control activities at all response levels including for COVID-19, AGE, and other communicable diseases.

Onboard photography is primarily centered on portrait and event photography, using both natural locations and onboard studio setups with backdrops and studio lighting. We are looking for portrait photographers with a proven pr al holiday environment. You will demonstrate a strong commercial awareness to drive sales and customer service to meet targets and have experience of building high performing teams. FAQ’s

What are the working hours?

The hours are very varied on board. As event photographers we work around everyone else schedules! A typical day is around 8 to 10 hours. A large part of that time is in the Photo Gallery helping customers. Ship’s  operate 7 days a week and there is a requirement to work every day, however with a good mixture of ports visited you are often only starting at 5pm and working in the evening for about 5 or 6 hours. Tours of Duty are typically four to six months long.

Will I have any other duties aside from photographing?

Although the job title is ‘Photographer’ your primary duties are sales related either within the Photo Gallery or talking with guests to let them know about the various services we have on board. And, as a crew member on board a cruise ship, there are other duties you will be required to take part in. This will always involve safety-related duties. You will be given full training on board on how to deal with an emergency and the mustering of guests. It’s like how airline cabin crew are also responsible for taking care of passengers if there is an emergency on a plane.

Are there any restrictions for working on board?

You will need to pass a seafarer’s medical examination. You must have completed a full course of covid vaccinations. In most cases you will need a US visa so will need to have a clean police background check.

What is the uniform like?

There is a casual daytime uniform (chinos and polo shirt) and a more formal evening uniform of trousers or skirt with a shirt and waistcoat.

Which ship will I be working on?

You will be assigned a ship depending on the needs of the business. You are welcome to let us know any preferences and where we can, we will accomdodate this.

What is my accommodation like?

Cabins for the majority of the crew are shared with someone of the same sex and from the same department. So you will usually share with another photographer. Cabins are on the small side, but they will have a bunk bed, desk, cupboard and en-suite shower room. Cabins are usually ‘inside’ cabins, so will not have a window. Photo Managers will have their own cabin with a double bed and will usually be an outside cabin with a porthole, however, every ship is different.

Anything else important I should know?

The biggest difference is the internet. Ships by their very nature operate at sea, away from mobile signals and WIFI. There is provision on board but this is via a satellite so will be slower and more expensive than you are used to at home. Satellite signals are not covered under any mobile plan so will be at a supplement. However, when the ship is in port, you will have the usual access to data roaming if your mobile contract includes this or from WIFU providers in port. The technology for cruise ships is improving continually with both costs coming down and speeds increase, but this is a slow process where new satellites are launched into low orbit to provide better coverage while out at sea.

In order to be eligible to apply we do ask for at least one of the following from you:

a) 2 years industry experience b) Photography degree c) BTEC national diploma or equivalent higher education in Photographer

However, if you really think you have what it takes, but don’t meet the above criteria, we’d be more than happy to hear from you and assess you on your individual merit. Even Picasso didn’t have art qualifications!

The majority of our guests on board are British and American so it’s important you can communicate easily with our customers, speaking fluent English is a must.

Your rights to complain are as below.

The right to complain on board under the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (‘MLC’):

• A seafarer has the right to an on board complaints procedure to complain about breaches of their rights under the MLC.
• On board complaint procedures must aim to resolve complaints at the lowest level possible, but seafarers must be able to directly complain to the master, the shipowner and, if necessary, to appropriate external authorities.
• right to be accompanied or represented during the complaints procedure;
• right not to be victimized for filing a complaint;
• right to confidentiality throughout the process; and
• right to seek redress for a complaint using whatever legal means the seafarer considers appropriate.
• Seafarers must receive a copy of the on board complaint procedures applicable on their ship.
• There should be a person on board the ship who has been nominated to advise seafarers on the procedures available to them.
• be addressed to the head of the department or to the seafarer’s superior officer; and
• include personal details, ship details, details regarding the complaint, witnesses and any supporting documentation
• If the addressee cannot resolve the matter, the complaint should be referred to the master or ashore.
• The complaint must be recorded and a written copy provided to the seafarer at every stage of the process.

The right to complain ashore under the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (‘MLC’):

• A seafarer has the right to report a complaint alleging a breach of the MLC to an authorised officer in the port at which the ship calls.
• This is in addition to the right anyone has to complain to the inspecting authority in the ship’s flag country.
• If a complaint is made on shore, the authorised officer must undertake an initial investigation.
• If a seafarer’s complaint is general in nature and involves everyone on the ship, the authorised officer may conduct a detailed inspection in port.
• A detailed inspection must be carried out if the complaint concerns a serious matter or means that there might be a clear hazard to the health, safety or security of seafarers. The ship may be detained in port until the problem is resolved.
• If the complaint relates to an individual case, the authorised officer will establish if the on board complaint procedure has been used. If not, the officer should suggest that the on board procedure be explored before an on shore complaint is pursued.
• A seafarer who submits their complaint to an authorized port officer using the on shore procedure has:
• the right to prompt and practical means of redress;
• the right to confidentiality; and
• the right to make known his own views.
• If the complaint is not resolved, the authorised officer will inform the ship’s flag state.
• If the complaint is still not resolved, the port authorities must transmit a copy of the authorised officer’s report, accompanied by any reply from the flag state, to the Director General of the International Labour Organisation.

Cruise Ship Photographer Jobs

Marce Ortiz works as a ship’s photo printer for Premier Cruise Lines aboard the Oceanic, which sails from Cape Canaveral, Florida, to destinations in the Bahamas. Getting a job on a cruise line sounded like a great change of pace to Marce. He applied to several cruise companies for a job as a photographer. Marce said getting a job was a lot easier than he expected.

I sent out a bunch of resumes and expected to wait for a month or so, but within a week several cruise lines called me and set up interviews over the phone, which was great because the companies were in Miami and I live in California.

After my interview with Premier they asked if I could start in a week, and a week later they flew me to Cape Canaveral to start work.

Of course, getting hired isn’t this easy for everyone, and Marce says he had several things going for him when he applied:

I had already worked in a one-hour photo lab for a few years, so I knew a lot about developing and printing before I applied. Premier hired other people about the same time that had little or no experience in photography, but I’m sure my experience helped. I also had really good timing. I applied in early December, and I think a lot of cruise lines lose employees near the end of the year, plus there was a lot of turnover in the photography department about the time I got hired.

Once on the ship, Marce discovered that working at sea was a lot of fun, but getting comfortable with the strange schedules and workload took a few weeks:

At first I worked so much that it seemed like I never did anything else.

I started as a photographer, but the photo printer quit after a week and all of a sudden I had to learn to operate the printing machine, so I worked slowly for a while. The manager knew it was difficult, though, so they put me up in a hotel in the Bahamas for a couple of days so I could switch ships and train with another printer. After learning the ropes on that ship, I went back to the Oceanic and was a lot better at the job. The hours were still tough; we never had a full day off and it seemed like I spent all of my time off sleeping.

A lot of people seemed to quit during the first two weeks because shipboard life is so different, and they weren’t used to the unpredictable schedules, but once past this adjustment period people stayed for quite a while. I began to really enjoy my job and worked with a lot of fun people. I also learned to work faster and get more free time. In fact, sometimes I had trouble thinking of things to do when we were in port since I’d already seen most of the tourist spots in the Bahamas.

We run all of our cruises out of Cape Canaveral, so while in port I usually go to the mall, mail letters, make phone calls, and take care of personal matters. There isn’t a whole lot to spend your money on when you’re at sea, since your room and board is paid for, so most people manage to save a lot of money.

Premier is famous for its emphasis on children and hires a lot of youth counselors to care for children while their parents are in port. Marce found the atmosphere fun and enjoyed the passengers for the most part:

The management at our company is really great. Our ship is affiliated with Warner Brothers Studios and caters to the family market, so we have costumed characters of Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck on board, and a lot of our photographs are of the kids with the characters. During spring and early summer we get a lot of college kids instead of the usual family crowd, and the atmosphere gets pretty wild-we even hire extra security guards for the spring break crowd. It’s a great change of pace, but I’m glad it’s not like that year-round!

We were allowed free use of the gym to work out, and we could go to the bar and hang out with friends, but I usually used my free time on board to catch up on my sleep. About the only thing we couldn’t do was use the pool, which didn’t bother anybody. After about six months you start getting tired of ship life , though, and my manager could sense that I needed time off and sent me shoreside, where they paid for my flight home. After a few weeks I came back to work and felt great.

Many crew members of the Oceanic, including Marce, were assigned to rescue teams and underwent safety and rescue training. Marce was even involved in a rescue at sea:

We came upon a capsized sailboat one day and actually got to use the rescue procedures we’d learned. The people had been drifting for two days and claimed a shark had actually attacked their boat. They were really dehydrated and suffering from exposure and were sure glad to see us. I also took a lot of pictures of the rescue that the company later used for publicity. It really reminded us that we were actually at sea.

I would definitely recommend working on a ship to anyone who wants to travel and save lots of money. It just takes persistence and good timing to get a great job on a cruise line.

Junior Photographer Job Description and Duties:

- Entry level position in the photo department team aboard the cruise ship

- Works under the direct supervision of the senior photographers, The Assistant Photo Manager and The Photo Manager
