Caburaí is a serious Amazon Expedition, the mountain has rarely had groups making it to the top, and is only for those who consider themselves capable of anything.  The highest waterfall in the world may also be accessed using the city as a starting point, although Angel Falls in Venezuela is still a journey away.

The highest mountain of Brazil can also be scaled in expeditions beginning from Boa Vista or Manaus. Pico da Neblina (Misty Peak) is 2,994m high and towers over the Serra do Imeri range deep in the wildest part of the Amazon Rainforest.  This is a serious trek, but all of the expeditions, treks and adventures beginning in this wonderful, wild area of the Amazon Jungle in the far north of Brazil are only for the truly adventurous!

Guide to BOA VISTA, the world’s most attractive heap of sand

Posted on 2022-06-03 2022-11-02 Author Renata Green 4 Comments

Consisting of nothing but deserts and beaches, Boa Vista is like a big heap of sand thrown into the ocean. It is Cape Verde’s second most developed tourist center after the Island of Sal.

Praia do Estoril on the island of Boa Vista, the world's most attractive heap of sand

The perfect destination for a couple of very lazy days laying on….the sand.

When I was sitting at my computer in rainy Hamburg planning my trip, I thought it was a brilliant idea to stay in Boa Vista for over one week. Beaches! Sun! Ocean! Sand!

Praia da Varadinha on Boa Vista, the world's most attractive heap of sand

Yes, I did find all this in outstanding quality. However, a week is far too long to stay on the beach when there is so much to see on the other islands. So if you’re not satisfied with frying in the sun and dipping into the ocean – the best ocean ever – you shouldn’t stay for more than three days here.

The salt production and export really had an impact on Cabo Verdean names. Not only is there an entire island called Sal . There are also more than a handful of settlements named after the white gold.

Anyway, Sal Rei, Boa Vista’s second-largest town is a chilled place with a couple of streets and alleys and a pretty big square, the Largo Santa Isabel, in the middle.

Sal Rei, Boa Vista's second-largest town

There is a good choice of bars, restaurants, and shops as well as the Mercado Municipal, the central market.

And in Sal Rei, like on the island of Sal , are many Africans from the mainland. I guess it’s easier to make a living on Cape Verde than in Senegal or Mali where many of these men are coming from. Most of them are selling all sorts of handcraft from their home countries.

Via Pitoresca

On the outskirts of Sal Rei are a couple of places worth seeing like the Via Pitoresca. I guess you don’t need a translation or an explanation for this name. This road is leading from the airport in Rabil to Sal Rei.

Via Pitoresca on Boa Vista, the world's most attractive heap of sand

Here the ever-present sand dunes are overgrown by bushes and endemic trees and palm trees. It’s really picturesque and absolutely worth a stroll.

An Unexpected Legacy

Some of the most prominent traces in Sal Rei are stemming from Abraham Ben Oliel. Leaving their home in Morocco, Mr. Ben Oliel, of Sephardic-Jewish descendence, came together with his wife Esther to Boa Vista in 1860. At that time, Sal Rei was a busy trading spot between Africa and South America. The Ben Oliels gained great economic and social success and influence on the entire island.

There is still their former home – the Casa Ben Oliel – to be admired right across from the   Igreja São Isabel.

Abraham and Esther are resting in the Jewish cemetery – which is a bizarre place. It’s a small, fenced square right in front of the Marine Club Beach Resort about one mile north of their former home.

Jews were not allowed to be buried in Catholic graveyards. Therefore, a couple of members of Ben Oliel’s family found their last resting place here.

What’s a bit eerie – to say the least – is that since now there is the Beach Resort right behind, the tiny cemetery, consisting of about seven graves, stands more or less unnoticed right in the middle of the hotel’s parking lot. There are so many ways of parking….

remnants of the chapel Capela de Nossa Senhora de Fátima on Boa Vista, the world's most attractive heap of sand.

Once you get to this quirky place, keep walking around the hotel towards the ocean. After about 15 minutes, you’ll get to the remnants of the chapel Capela de Nossa Senhora de Fátima. It was also built by some Ben Oliel’s family members. Today, it’s in ruins in the middle of nowhere which gives it an almost spooky air.

Rabil is mainly known because it’s right next to Boa Vista’s international airport. But Rabil is also a small town. There is not much shakin’, so walking between the weathered houses painted in different colors makes you feel like visiting an abandoned ghost town. Don’t get me wrong, it’s neither spooky nor dangerous – but somewhat weird.

Rabil on Boa Vista

However, since you can get there in about fifteen minutes by minibus from Sal Rei, it’s totally worth the experience.

Restaurant in Rabil on Boa Vista

If you get to the end of the town, you’ll have a grand view of the Desierto da Viana. Better don’t try to go there by yourself, it is a desert and it can be dangerous just venturing there.

Deserto de Viana.

Better venture back to Rabil’s southern tip. There you’ll find the Escola da Olaria, a school that continues teaching the traditional handcraft of Rabil: Sculpting clay. They manufacture raw or glazed mugs and bowls and traditional houses as well as sea animals in various shapes and sizes.

Turtles made of clay in Rabil

These pieces are not exactly cheap, but you are buying them for two good causes. You’ll have a beautiful, individual souvenir and you’ll support the cooperative. Amazingly, the ceramic furnace is communal and can be used by all villagers.

Povoação Velha | Praia da Varadinha | Praia da Santa Mónica

And then came the day that I wanted to see sand in different places so I went to a travel agency in Largo Santo Isabel and booked a half-day tour. This way, I got to see the standard-boring-all-inclusive-hotels located on the beaches south of Praia Estoril, namely Praia das Dunas and Praia Chaves.

After we had picked up two Portuguese couples, we went by jeep first to Deserto de Viana,….

Sign Deserto de Viana.

….then to the Praia da Varadinha, a gorgeous, deserted beach with high waves – so just looking, no swimming.

Sand on the Praia da Varadinha.

We then continued to what is one of Boa Vista’s strongest tourist magnets, the Praia de Santa Mónica. Miles and miles of a secluded, untouched beach. Well, the secluded and untouched collides a bit with the magnetic side. As we arrived, there were like a dozen other jeeps there and the beach looked like spring break.

Don’t let my picture fool you. I walked a bit away from the crowds and took a shot in the other direction. So apparently, if you are driving yourself or you have a private driver, you might be able to get to the secluded, untouched part. Not possible if you’re in a small group, though.

Praia de Santa Mónica

On the way back, we made a stop at Povoação Velha which translates to old settlement. Guess what, the town is not only the largest community in Boa Vista but also the oldest. Therefore, they really chose that name well. Founded in the late 16th century Povoação Velha was Boa Vista’s capital until 1810.

The vendors in Povoação Velha.

Practical Information

How to get there and around.

Since Boa Vista is Cape Verde’s second most touristy island, there are international charter flights as well as domestic flights coming into the Aristides Pereira International Airport located about 5 kilometers southeast of Sal Rei.

Once in Cape Verde, the most convenient way to travel from island to island is, obviously, flying. At this moment, the best option seems to be going by  Binter , a Spanish airline serving mainly the Canary Islands , but also other destinations in that region, i. e. also North and Northwest Africa.

However, there is a catamaran going to the Island of Sal and there are organized day trips to Sal and Fogo. Albeit, they are crazy expensive.

There are public minibusses on Boa Vista, however, you should inquire if you have the option to come back the same day to where you’ve started from. Other than that, there is always the option to take a cab, but those are certainly not cheap.

Where to Sleep

Location, location, location – the Hotel Estoril and Residence Cardeal is one of the accommodations closest to the absolutely pristine beach Praia do Estoril.

It’s clean and comfortable, however, they offer neither complimentary air conditioning nor breakfast. Therefore, the price was….okay-ish.

Two young man on the Beach of Estoril

Like I say, the location is really great – close to the beach as well as to the town and you can grab a good breakfast – either hearty sandwiches or sweet pastry together with real Italian coffee – at the Italian bakery nearby.

By the way, besides a couple of convenience stores run by Chinese, almost every business on Boa Vista is run by Italian ex-pats – which, at least regarding food, is a good thing.

Get more details, check out availability and the rates at the Hotel Estoril  *

In case the Hotel Estoril and Residence Cardeal are booked out, you can look for other suitable accommodation options on this map*:

Where to Eat

As I said, due to the Italian invasion, there are some good eateries in Sal Rei. However, if you want good Cabo Verdian cuisine, I can recommend the restaurant at the

Hotel Boa Vista Rua 4 de Julho Sal Rei 5111 Phone: + 238 – 251 11 45

What to See

I’m an avid solo-travelling woman. Since solo travel doesn’t equal solitude, I love to join organized tours here and there. They allow me to meet fellow travellers – for just a short moment or a lifelong friendship.

Therefore, here are some great ideas of what to do during your stay in Boa Vista. Exploring the island with a qualified guide will help you make the best of your stay – especially if you are planning on exploring also some of the remote beaches*:

Another remnant from the Portuguese colonial times is the name of the local currency which is called – just like in Portugal until the installment of the €uro – Escudo respectively Escudo de Cabo Verde, abbreviated CVE. For 1 US$ you get 105 CVE, and for a €uro 110 CVE (as of November 2022).  You can check the current rate here.

Bills from Cape Verde

Credit cards are not as widely accepted as for instance in Europe or Asia, even some small guest houses do take only cash. Some businesses add a small percentage if you pay by credit card – which can become a quite high amount if you pay for instance for a couple of nights at a hotel.

There are ATMs in Boa Vista so you won’t have a problem getting cash.

Some businesses even accept €uros, however, there usually is a disproportionate surcharge. Pre-payment of hotels, for instance, is therefore advisable.

As Cape Verde used to be a Portuguese colony, the official language is Portuguese, but people speak krioulo . This is a local patois and, like many dialects, differs a tiny bit even from island to island.

People do speak some English and French, but it is certainly helpful to have some basic knowledge of the local language.

Before my trip, I’d practiced using  babbel . The first lesson is free and supplies you with the most important words to interact with people.

I can understand why you would plan a beach vacation to Boa Vista to enjoy the beaches, sun, sand and water. Although I can understand why a week just lazing in the sun might not be ideal for many. I sure would have made sure to head out for a view of the sand desert too! And I would be ok with great Italian food.

I love music from Cabo Verde, and I would like to visit islands to listen to live music. And there is a lot to do and see, for sure I would like to visit Rabil and Sal Rei

A smattering of volcanic islands 350 miles off the coast of Senegal, Cape Verde seems a lonely prospect at first look, out in the mid-Atlantic. But there’s a reason it’s fast become a fly-and-flop favourite: miles of uninterrupted ivory beaches, impossibly pure surf and an intriguing lunar landscape. Not to mention its consistently sunny disposition: January’s average temperature is 25?C. And finally, there’s a lovely little eco lodge to rival the big hotels and budget guesthouses. Run entirely on renewable energy, Spinguera is a restored fishing village with its own private beach on the north coast of Boa Vista island (translation: good view). Think charming, stone-hewn villas with bright yellow shutters, fresh, white bedrooms and lantern-lit sunset suppers. You could while away every day right here. Or go island-hopping to explore more of Cape Verde’s craggy beauty: from Sal’s red deserts and salt pans to Sao Vicente, the heart of its colourful Afro-Portuguese culture.

Thanks so much for your extended comment – I totally agree: There is so much to do on the isles of Cape Verde. Next time, I’ll make sure to explore more of them 😀

What to do in Boa Vista, Cape Verde

1. explore sal rei.

what to do in boa vista, Church in Sal Rei cape verde under a grey sky with a slide in front

Sal Rei , Boa Vista’s capital, is a cozy, sleepy town counting slightly over 6,000 inhabitants, and visiting is easily one of the best things to do in Boa Vista.

Undeniably, the town’s most famous landmark is Igreja da Santa Isabel , a colonial-style church overlooking the square with the same name.

The baroque facade, painted in shades of sand and royal blue, merges perfectly into the colorful landscape of the square, characterized by flowers and pavilions.

Sal Rei , Boa Vista got its name from the saline near the town, where it’s said only the best quality salt was produced.

Other highlights of this small colonial town are the harbor, as well as the colorful districts that impress with their little houses aligned along the streets.

Don’t miss the Boa Vista market where you can stock up on local fruits and vegetables as it’s considered one of the best things to do in Sal Rei , Boa Vista.

If you are looking for the best restaurants and shops in Boa Vista, make sure to check the Ultimate Cape Verde Travel Guide Book .

2. Visit the shipwreck of the Cabo Santa Maria

where to visit in boa vista, cape verde, Shipwreck of rusted ship in shallow waters under blue sky

Undeniably one of the best excursions in Boa Vista is to head to Praia de Santa Maria in order to admire the iconic shipwreck of the Cabo Santa Maria .

Beached in 1968 while sailing towards Brazil, today’s rusting wreck provides one of the most photogenic landscapes on the island.

This isn’t just a great place to visit if you’re eager to get that “ Insta-worthy ” shot, it’s also considered one of the most important attractions in Cape Verde .

3. Enjoy the music bars of Sal Rei

fun things to do in boa vista cape verde at night, man in suit wearing fedora and playing a guitar

Boa Vista may be much more tranquil than Sal , but the island still offers plenty of entertainment opportunities.

One of the best things to do in Boa Vista is to enjoy music in one of the many bars in Sal Rei .

A must-visit for music bars is the Morabeza Beach Bar & Lounge Restaurant , which hosts a Reggae Night twice a week.

Located just outside the heart of Sal Rei along Praia Carlota, this trendy beach bar with open seating has the best vibes.

For classic Cape Verdean music, you have to visit Caffè del Porto , and enjoy a delicious seafood dish with your entertainment.

The Cocoa Bar is another nice place with a great atmosphere and good music.

Another one of my favorites is the super-cozy Wakan Bar , renowned for its vibe, friendly staff, and awesome cocktails.

However, it is unfortunately temporarily closed for the time being, although the owners have said they will be reopening in the future – so fingers crossed!

You’ll find a few more suggestions for music bars in the next section, as well!

4. Eat traditional Cape Verdean food

Enjoy some things to do in Boa Vista, plate of traditional Boa Vista food on wooden table with decorative fish ornament nearby

Cape Verde is known for its delicious food that blends a West African heritage with Portuguese influences.

And of course, trying this delicious food is one of the absolute best things to do in Boa Vista!

So, what is some traditional Cape Verde food you must try? The seafood is absolutely exquisite in Boa Vista.

You can choose from many local dishes, including shrimp in a garlic and wine sauce, moreia eel (served fried), laps, a stew made from mussels and peppers, or lobster cooked in a red sauce.

One of the best places to taste all these specialties is the Perola d’Chaves , which offers a range of seafood, Mediterranean, and BBQ options.

If you want to try local Cape Verdean food, the seafood dishes are a must and will definitely make you want to return again and again.

This restaurant also hosts live music some evenings and has the best cocktails on the island.

Another absolute must for local cuisine – again, especially the seafood – is Porton di nos Ilha in Sal Rei.

The views out over Praia d’ Diante, paired with their mouthwatering dishes make this one of the most romantic things to do in Boa Vista.

Like many bars and restaurants on Boa Vista, they also host live music some nights and serve a range of local drinks.

Find more places to enjoy local food and get the Ultimate Cape Verde Travel Guide Book .

5. Relax on Praia de Chaves

things to do in boa vista, cape verde, view of Praia de Chaves Beach with white sand and calm waves populated with some green palm trees under a wide blue sky with fluffy clouds

One of the best things to do in Boa Vista is hang out at the beach, and many people -including me! – claim that Praia de Chaves is one of the best beaches in Cape Verde .

And flanked by the fanciest hotels in Boa Vista, this white sand beach does impress with its azure waters and wonderful dunes.

The beach includes all modern amenities, from sunbeds and umbrellas to showers and toilets.

The beach is also well known amongst visitors for having some of the best hotels in Cape Verde .

And if you’re after an affordable five-star experience, why not book your stay at the Iberostar Club Boa Vista ***** ?

This All-Inclusive seafront resort not only has great rooms with a view, but it also offers a wide range of services, from a seafront pool to a bar, spa treatments, an on-site night club, as well as room service.

6. Enjoy a lonely walk at Praia de Santa Monica

Try out some things to do in cape verde boa vista, view of long empty beach with golden yellow sand and deep blue seawater to one side under a wide open sky

While Praia de Chaves could be crowded sometimes, Praia de Santa Monica in the southwestern part of the island is perfect for a lovely afternoon stroll.

It’s about 5 km away from Povoação Velha , a splendid colonial village, and only 16 km from Sal Rei .

Adjacent to the Morro de Areia Nature Reserve , the beach is also the perfect spot for observing the local fauna.

If you’re lucky, you might even spot some sea turtles heading toward the ocean!

7. Visit Viana Desert

Discover what to do in cape verde, Arid sand environment of the edge of the Viana Desert, Boa Vista in front of lush green forest, Cape Verde

Opposite to Praia de Santa Monica , in the north-western part of the island, the Viana Desert is a place like no other.

You can get here easily from Sal Rei or Rabil to admire the ever-changing landscape made up of white sand dunes.

Interspersed with sparse vegetation and black volcanic rocks, the dunes create a surreal landscape.

The unearthly feel is amplified by the lack of any artificial sounds, and no doubt, this is the place to visit to restore your energy or meditate!

What makes it even better is that the desert is located only a stone’s throw from civilization.

You won’t have to worry about deadly animals or quicksands, and walking around here is absolute bliss.

The Viana Desert is part of any Boa Vista island tour as it’s one of the top things to do in Boa Vista!

8. Explore Rabil Oasis

Find your new favourite things to do boa vista cape verde, Oasis near Viana desert with lush green trees and bushes in front of a backdrop of rolling sandy hills under a blue sky with clouds

Unlike Sal , which is quite sandy, Boa Vista impresses with a few green places, such as the Rabil Oasis .

Stretching along the River Rabil , the oasis offers a different kind of landscape.

The terrain is quite arid, but you’ll be able to admire lots of palm trees, as well as other desert vegetation.

Perhaps the loveliest spot is the wetland around the mouth of the river, an important natural area.

The Rabil lagoon is home to many species of birds, including Eurasian spoonbills and rufous-backed sparrows.

In addition to birds, you can also spot indigenous lizards, like the Cape Verde leaf-toed gecko.

9. Explore the deserted village of Curral Velho

Take part in some fun things to do on boa vista, rusted wreck of small boat sitting on sand next to two smaller wooden rowing boats in front of a large body of water in Sal, cabo verde

Have you ever dreamed of exploring a deserted village? Well, you can tick it off your bucket list in Boa Vista.

In fact, visiting this remarkable spot is one of the most unique things to do in Boa Vista.

Curral Velho was once a flourishing fisherman village, but due to its remote location at the end of Praia de Santa Monica , the settlement was too exposed to pirate raids.

All across Boa Vista, Cape Verde, settlements started to build fortifications to ward off unwanted attacks.

As this happened, the inhabitants of Curral Velho started to abandon their homes and move to more secure areas.

Eventually, the village was abandoned completely, but the ruins of the settlement still stand and are proof of its existence.

Not only will visiting this place will allow you to discover a bit of the most authentic Boa Vista, but the village is also home now to birds and sea turtles, who come here to lay their eggs.

10. Watch the windsurfers at Praia de Varandinha

Enjoy some shopping in boa vista, cape verde, lone rock sitting on shores of deserted sandy beach next to the white surf of a wave retreating into the vibrant turquoise waters of the ocean under a bright blue sky with wispy white clouds

On the southwest coast of the island of Boa Vista, Cape Verde, Praia de Varandinha is a windsurfer’s paradise.

The crystalline waves bathing the shores, as well as the constant winds, create the perfect surfing conditions.

In addition to surfing, the beach itself is a true marvel; mostly deserted, it impresses with amazing caves and coves, as well as the finest sands that are a pleasure to walk on.

Close to the Morro de Areia Nature Reserve , the beach is also the perfect starting point for a hiking excursion in Boa Vista .

11. Go diving or snorkeling

Take part in some amazing cape verde boa vista excursions, underwater shot of turtle swimming majestically past the sunken wreck of two boats on the bed of the sea

Maybe you’ve always dreamt of snorkeling or diving but never had a chance to try them out.

Figuring in the top 10 hotspots for diving and snorkeling in the world, Boa Vista stands out with the impressive diversity of its corals and marine animals.

An abundant population of sea turtles makes it possible to admire these beautiful creatures, both onshore and under the water.

Snorkeling tours are possible in Boa Vista at high tide in the shallower waters of the reef.

When under water, you can expect to encounter thousands of colorful fish, as well as some sharks which are relatively small and not dangerous to humans.

Diving enthusiasts can practice both freediving and scuba diving to explore the amazing sea bottom.

Whatever your choice, remember to always go with a mate as the ocean can be a dangerous environment!

But it’s definitely one of the best outdoor activities in Cape Verde and shouldn’t be missed!

Book here your snorkeling experience in Boa Vista

12. Learn a new watersport

Get into some of the Best Things to do in Boa Vista, person in wetsuit on surfboard holding onto the reins of a parachute as they slide along the surface of the sea

The best thing you can do during your holidays in Boa Vista is learning a new watersport, such as windsurfing or water skiing.

Whatever your choice, many resorts, and schools welcome tourists to join their classes and give it a go.

SeaBookings , for instance, offers beginner kitesurf courses and also organizes water excursions by kayak and boat tours.

If you’re not sure what sport to learn or what school is best, ask your hotel in Boa Vista, Cape Verde, to book the classes for you with a trusted provider.

13. Go on a turtle nesting tour

Be a part of some great things to do in boa vista cape verde, overhead shot of an adorable tiny baby turtle shuffling its way through white sand

Cape Verde is the world’s third reserve for the Caretta Caretta turtles, and most of these wonderful creatures deposit their eggs on the beaches in Boa Vista.

So, if you happen to visit between July and mid-October, you could embark on a turtle nesting tour .

Who knows, maybe you’ll even be lucky enough to see a few youngsters hatching!

While many tour operators include this experience in their Boa Vista holiday packages, the best thing to do is contact the Turtle Foundation in Boa Vista directly.

Through the foundation, you can find out about the most sustainable ways to observe sea turtles in their habitat without disturbing their nesting and hatching.

This is one of the most amazing things to do in Boa Vista and shouldn’t be missed if you are able to see it!

14. Do a quad tour

Discover what is there to do in cape verde, unattended quadbike sitting on an open patch of sand in front of a plethora of rocky sandy hills under a clear azure sky

If you’re looking for a different experience in Boa Vista, then an island tour by quad will undeniably be the best part of your stay.

One of the best companies to check out is Quad Zone , which was established by local individuals.

They offer a variety of tours, including a full-day Boa Vista tour that will take you to the discovery of the island’s best-kept secrets.

If you don’t want to go on an organized tour but still like the idea of exploring the island by quad, know that they also offer quad and scooter rentals to true enthusiasts.

15. Go whale watching

Learn about Boa Vista with this boa vista travel guide, close up shot of the fin of a whale as it glides through the water

Have you ever dreamt of a close encounter with humpback whales?

Well then head to Boa Vista as these friendly creatures come to Cape Verde to give birth, normally in spring.

So, if you’re planning a trip to Boa Vista between March and May, a whale-watching boat tour could be the experience of your lifetime!

Tours depart from most of the hotels in Boa Vista and include a short briefing and half an hour of navigation before being able to observe the whales in the company of a marine biologist.

One of the best hotels offering whale-watching tours is the Hotel Riu Touareg ***** , an all-inclusive resort that truly knows how to treat its guests.

Check here the rates for whale-watching tours

16. Visit the lighthouse of Morro Negro

Seeing Boa Vista from above is another of those unmissable experiences to live while visiting the island.

And one of the best places to go for this endeavor is Morro Negro , a hill located on the east coast of the island.

Overlooking the surroundings from 156 meters, the Morro Negro Lighthouse is a true landmark.

Built in colonial style in 1930, the now-abandoned edifice stands 12 meters tall and impresses visitors with its beauty.

Easily accessible from Cabeça dos Tarrafes , the Morro Negro hill is also the access gateway to one of the largest turtle nature reserves on the island.

17. Do a sailing tour

Don't miss out on the day trips from boa vista to sal, view across the water of several sailing boats moored next to a peninsula of rocky ground under a clear blue sky

One of the most luxurious experiences to live in Boa Vista, and affordable enough for anyone to do, is a sailing tour around the island .

You can pick from a variety of options, including family boat tours, perfect for youngsters, as well as romantic tours for couples.

This relaxing getaway will not only give you a chance to restore your energy levels, but you’ll be able to admire the island from afar and discover some of the prettiest spots along the ever-changing coastline.

If you feel like it, you can even ask the skipper to drop the anchor and freshen up with some swimming or snorkeling.

This is no doubt, an adventure like no other and will be one of the most unforgettable things you do in Boa Vista.

Check here the rates for sailing tours

18. Have a cocktail night in a beach bar

Relax with some of the best things to do in boa vista, close up of person holding out a red cocktail drink in a tumbler glass with a straw

After a long day of sailing, exploring the island on a quad, or diving, you certainly need a fun night.

Sipping cocktails in a beach bar is by far one of the most fun things to do in Boa Vista at night, and there are dozens of interesting bars to choose from.

One of my absolute favorite beach bars in Boa Vista is the Morabeza Beach Bar & Lounge Restaurant , which hosts a Reggae music night twice a week!

The Blu Mery might be a restaurant, but the facility has a bar too and prepares delicious cocktails.

Caffè del Porto , overlooking the old port in Sal Rei , not only offers yummy cocktails and authentic cuisine, but it also organizes live music nights.

Additionally, Bahia the Beach is a fun spot and a great place to make new friends, although their drinks can be a little pricey!

19. Go island-hopping

Try out all the things to do in cape verde boa vista, view of majestic valley with small collection of buildings dwarfed by rolling grassy hillsides and rocky mountain peaks all under a dramatic blue sky with white clouds

Boa Vista is only one of the ten islands in the Cape Verde archipelago.

The thing that each of them impresses with is the unique scenery and jaw-dropping landscapes, so it would be a true pity to miss what the other islands have to offer.

Indeed, islands like Santo Antao , Fogo, and Brava are fabulous for hikers, while Sao Vicente offers a lot for cultural travelers.

As such, island-hopping tours are offered by most tour operators as well as locals.

These tours will take you to the discovery of different natural areas, ranging from white sand beaches to mountain peaks, lush tropical forests, natural reserves, and breathtaking cultural cities and villages.

For the adventurers looking to do everything on their own, excellent flight and ferry connections between the major islands also make it possible to organize the island-hopping tour of your dreams.

So, why don’t you give it a try and have a true adventure in Cape Verde?

Check here the flights between the Cape Verdean islands and book here your day trip from Boa Vista .

20. Enjoy Cape Verdean traditional drinks

Check out what to do in cape verde this summer, close up of several tall glasses with cocktails featuring slices of green fruit and mint leaves with black straws

Undeniably, the only way to end your holiday in Boa Vista is with a sip of the traditional beverage, grogue , one of the most typical drinks from Cape Verde .

Similar to the popular rum up to some extent, grogue is an alcoholic beverage made from sugarcane.

This beverage is also the base for the popular Cape Verdean cocktail ponche , which includes lime and molasses.

Despite being a bit on the sweet side, it’s as refreshing as a mojito and undoubtedly a great choice after a hot day.

Some cocktail bars even use grogue instead of rum for classic cocktail recipes, such as mojito or caipirinhas – so, you have quite a few ways to try it!

21. Go on Day trips from Boa Vista to Sal

what to do in Cape Verde, close up of salt mine beach with mountains in the distance

If you decide to take a break from all the things to do on Boa Vista, why not consider taking one of the classic Cape Verde Boa Vista excursions?

Sal is the nearest island to Boa Vista, and is easily accessible via the Palmeira-Praia to Sal Rei-Praia ferry. The ferry takes about three and a half hours.

Once you arrive on Sal, you’ll discover a whole new list of answers to the question of what is there to do in Cape Verde.

You can get up close and personal with baby lemon sharks and baby turtles or head underwater for snorkeling or underground to the Pedra de Lume salt mines.

Windsurfing and kite surfing are also very popular on Sal.

Really, there’s something for everyone, which is what makes day trips from Boa Vista to Sal so popular!

22. Enjoy Boa Vista Nightlife

Enjoy the best things to do in boa vista at night, group of people clubbing with lots of confetti in the air

When the sun sets, there are still plenty of things to do in Cape Verde, and Boa Vista has a thriving nightlife scene, especially in the city of Sal Rei on the northwest coast.

Head to Taverna Ka Euclides on a Saturday night for live music, or if you want to dance until well after midnight, make your way to Queens Pub to enjoy their many different DJs.

Looking for a more relaxed evening with friends in this Boa Vista town? Despite the name, the Monster Lounge will be the perfect place for you to unwind.

There are also many restaurants with their own bars attached for you to enjoy across the whole island.

If you spend the day on the beach, dine out on some delicious seafood, then spend the night dancing away until the early hours, your time in Boa Vista Cape Verde will have been well spent!

23. Have a sunset dinner

romantic things to do in boa vista cape verde, couple having a romantic dinner and sunset on the beach

If you’re wondering what is Boa Vista like in Cape Verde, then one of the first answers is beautiful.

So one of the best things to do in Boa Vista Cape Verde is to enjoy the gorgeous sunset over dinner.

Perola d’Chaves on the west coast has various tables with a great view of the ocean and sky, and down on Boca Beach you can enjoy fresh barbecue lobster and homemade conch dishes with your view.

You can also get some great views of the sunset from the Hotel Riu Touareg on the south coast of Boa Vista.

But one of the best places for a sunset dinner has to be at the Morabeza Beach Bar & Lounge Restaurant , just to the south of Sal Rei.

Here you can dine on the sand and watch the sun slowly dip below the ocean, followed by a live drum and dance show and even a bonfire.

24. Do a catamaran cruise

Find out about what is there to do in cape verde, back view of a catamaran docked next to wooden pier in green-blue water under a cloudy blue sky

You may have thought about taking a boat out on the water in Boa Vista, but you should also add a catamaran cruise to your list of what to do in Cape Verde.

Catamaran tours are a relaxing way to travel around the island and see some of the nearby nautical points of interest.

While on the catamaran cruise, you’ll have access to all manner of snorkeling and fishing equipment, plenty of beer, wine, and snacks, plus live entertainment (and wifi of course).

There’s even the option of having a floating swimming pool attached at the rear for extra relaxation.

No Boa Vista travel guide would be complete without adding one of these extremely chill cruise options!

25. Do an off-road tour

Jump into some of the best cape verde boa vista excursions, back of an off-roading vehicle with two on it driving through a dust cloud on a sandy road under a blue sky

Any adrenaline junkies thinking of visiting Boa Vista can take part in some exciting things to do.

And one of the most exciting things to do Boa Vista Cape Verde offers is taking an off-road tour.

Visitors can be driven around in a 4×4 to various places of interest and local beauty by an experienced tour guide with a wealth of local knowledge.

If you want to take the wheel yourself, why not try out a half-day quad bike tour?

You’ll feel the wind in your hair as you speed along the sand dunes towards places like the Varandinha Caves and Santa Monica Beach.

Don’t worry if you’ve never handled an off-road vehicle before; your tour guide will be able to show you what to do on Boa Vista quad bikes to keep yourself safe and having fun.

Check here the rates for off-road tours

And now that you know what to do in Boa Vista, what the weather is like on the island, what foods to taste and drinks to sip, what are you waiting for?! Pack your suitcase, board that plane, and get ready to live the travel experience of a lifetime!

Getting around Boa Vista

The best way to get around Boa Vista is by private taxi or by aluguer , which is a collective taxi.

Most of the aluguer depart from the main square in Sal Rei , Boa Vista.

What about the weather in Boa Vista, Cape Verde?

Spend some time in boa vista cape verde this year, sweeping sand dunes rolling smoothly into the distance under an azure blue sky with white fluffy clouds

Home to a numerous population of sea turtles that come to lay their eggs on its beaches, Boa Vista is an adventurer’s paradise.

Its arid tropical climate with hot summers and mild winters makes it the perfect spot to visit all year long.

The weather in Boa Vista is warm throughout the year, however, if you want to avoid excessive heat, the best time to visit is from November to July.

The hottest months in Boa Vista are usually August, September, and October.

Regardless of when you plan to go, don’t forget to bring reef-friendly sunscreen, a wide-brim sun hat, as well as protective, SPF summer clothing.

This makes the archipelago a perfect place for winter holidays in Cape Verde as well.

Things to do in Boavista

' src=

In a happy turn of events people have noticed that Porto is not only downtown and the Ribeira and have even sought out alternative destinations off the beaten track.

As such, I thought that I should write about things to do in Boavista, considered by many to be the more corporate and high-class sector of Porto.

Life in this part of the city revolves around Avenida da Boavista, its main vehicular artery. I would even go as far as to say that Boavista consists of 2 “blocks”: one around its eponymous roundabout (or traffic circle, if you prefer), featuring Casa da Música, the Synagogue and Bom Sucesso Market, and the other, right at the end of the Avenida, at the edge of Parque da Cidade near Sea Life Porto .

Let’s find the best things to do in Boavista 🙂

Visit fundação de serralves museum and gardens, r. dom joão de castro, 210 | porto.

walk bondinho foz porto

You cannot write and article on the best things to do in Boavista without mentioning Fundação Serralves , one of my favourite places in Porto. The building itself is beautiful and frequently hosts exhibitions by renowned artists like the painter Paula Rego, sculptor Anish Kapoor and even the controversial photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.

You can also visit the beautiful gardens of Fundação Serralves , designed in such a way as to always have a tree “in bloom”. And, while you’re there, don’t forget to experience the Treetop Walk, a network of walkways “suspended” from the tree tops. It is really, really wonderful, and one of the most romantic things to do in Porto.

I recommend that you purchase the ticket for Fundação Serralves (including gardens) online because it makes things simpler. However, if you are on a budget, you can go there on the morning of the first Sunday of every month as it’s free. Brace yourselves, though, as it will be full of screaming children.

How to get there: the 203 and 207 buses stop right in front of Serralves.

Take a walk in Parque da Cidade

Avenida da boavista | porto.

parque cidade porto

It took me quite a while to actually enjoy Parque da Cidade as it always seemed to me to be a large and confusing park with too many entrances, paths and animals running around without a leash 😛 However, it must be said that it is one of the best gardens in Porto because of its versatility: there is room for sporting activities, yoga classes, picnics with friends, romantic walks and morning jogs. Visiting this park is, without a doubt, one of the best things to do in Boavista.

Also, on Saturday mornings there is an organic market that takes place in Parque da Cidade (behind the Soundwich restaurant), where you can find high quality produce. To everyone’s delight (including my own as I run there on the weekends) there are public water fountains and bathrooms throughout the park.

How to get there: there are several entrances to Parque da Cidade – I like to use the Avenida da Boavista entrance, because there is free parking in front.

Take your kids to see the penguins in SEA Life Porto

Rua particular nº 1, castelo do queijo | porto.

sea life porto group children see sea turtle

A friend of mine just became a mother about a year and a half ago and when she took her child to SEA Life Porto for the first time she was like: “if I had known that it was that good, I would have taken my kid there – I think I’ll go alone too!”. You can understand the temptation: it’s that SEA Life Porto, besides being a great destination for families with kids they also have a large outdoor area with benches for people to sit and “view” the “lake” where the penguins are fed, much to the delight of the kids (and the families). I’ve even had people tell me that they preferred SEA Life Porto to the Lisbon Oceanarium, specifically because of the large outdoor area.

So, if you’re looking for things to do in Boavista, I would heartily recommend SEA Life Porto .

If the weather is nice go to SEA Life Porto and then take a stroll around Parque da Cidade (there is an entrance nearby) or go to Matosinhos beach just the other side of the road.

How to get there: there are many, many buses that stop at the roundabout of Castelo do Queijo or at the end of Avenida da Boavista (namely: the 200, 203, 205, 500 and 502).

Watch a live concert at Casa da Música

Avenida da boavista, 604 | porto.

casa musica porto

If you go up Avenida da Boavista in the direction of the city centre you will find the stunning Casa da Música on your left. This venue, considered by many to be an eyesore is one of the biggest attractions in terms of contemporary Porto architecture . It has 3 resident orchestras and 2 resident choirs, an eclectic programme and even an educational service which regularly organizes activities for kids. So, if you wish to experience one of the best things to do in Boavista you should visit Casa da Música!

The way I see it, the best way to explore Casa da Música is to watch a live show. Having said that, the last time I did so (November 2021) I didn’t feel too comfortable as they didn’t check for digital vaccination certificates (even though they are required to by law), didn’t check people’s temperature at the door and they didn’t provide hand sanitizer… Let’s just say it was a very unsettling (unnecessarily so) evening.

There is another way to experience this building, in an orderly manner and in smaller groups, which is via a guided tour of Casa da Música. I’ve done this several times, with clients, and I’ve always enjoyed myself.

How to get there: Casa da Música metro station is 5 minutes away.

Take a leisurely stroll through Agramonte cemetery

Rua da meditação, 80 | porto.

mausoleum agramonte cemetery things to do boavista

It may seem strange to read this but one of the best ways to get to know a society is by analyzing its way of dealing with the dead and the concept of death in general. Now that I think about it, one of the things that I do when I travel is to visit local cemeteries. I get so introspective thinking about life and the moment . So, at least for me, one of the most interesting things to do in Boavista is to “take a walk” in Agramonte cemetery.

This cemetery was inaugurated in 1855 and its chapel was expanded in 1906 by José Marques da Silva , one of the seminal Portuguese architects from the 19 th and 20 th centuries who left his mark on the city having designed, among other buildings, the famous São Bento train station.

This cemetery is the resting place of several public figures, like the cellist Guilhermina Suggia.

Aside from the graves of António Soares dos Reis and António Teixeira Lopes, it also has a beautiful mausoleum dedicated to the victims of the Bacquet Theatre fire. It was built incorporating the ruins of the Bacquet Theatre like pieces of iron that were twisted by the fire. It is magnificent and profoundly forgotten.

How to get there: Casa da Música metro station is 5 minutes away on foot.

Try some tapas at Bom Sucesso Market

Praça do bom sucesso, 74-90 | porto.

bom sucesso market porto food stalls

Bom Sucesso Market, one of the oldest markets in Porto (specifically for fish) is a notable example of how it is possible to adapt historic buildings in a modern style tastefully, without defacing the past. These days, instead of the hollering fishmongers you hear soothing background music and socialize around the numerous food stalls.

The options are endless: éclairs from Leitaria da Quinta do Paço , pizzas, poke bowls, suckling pig from Bairrada, wine by the glass, cocktails, vegetarian dishes , ice creams from Neveiros… the variety is such that even the pickiest member of the group will be satisfied.

Have a real sandwich at Tasca da Badalhoca

Rua dr. alberto de macedo, 437 | porto.

smoked ham tasca badalhoca things to do boavista

Many good folks mistake the real Tasca da Badalhosa for Taxca on Rua da Picaria. However, the true lovers of Tascas in Porto know that everything started in a tiny, red, hobbit-sized house in the Boavista / Ramalde area. There, among the hanging legs of smoked ham and the smile of Dª Lurdes, you will find the best presunto, liver and caramelized onions or Rojões (pork) sandwiches in the whole of Porto. The rest is history. How to get there: catch the 202 bus and get off at the Alberto Macedo stop .

Visit the Holocaust Museum

Rua do campo alegre, 790 | porto.

holocaust museum porto

I was almost not going to include the Porto Jewish Community’s Holocaust Museum in this article about the best things to do in Boavista. It’s just that it is a bit strange to have a museum like this in a country that: 1) did not participate in the 2 nd world war, and 2) at that time, this country was ruled by a dictator who did everything within his power to prevent the arrival of Jews to Portugal. It is, in my opinion, a museum that is quite removed from our history culture. It is, however, something to be admired about the initiative of the Porto Jewish Community.

Also, you have to remember that for those who have not had the chance to visit an old concentration camp, this is a closer and more accessible option for learning about the horrors of the 2 nd world war. Also, while you’re there you should also check out the Synagogue of Porto – it is closed for visitation, but it is a beautiful building. How to get there: Casa da Música metro station is 5 minutes away on foot.

Go for brunch at Negra Café Boavista

Rua de 5 de outubro, 93 | porto.

brunch negra cafe things to do boavista

I must admit that Brunch in Porto has sort of lost its thing for me. However, I do enjoy brunch in the new Negra Café of Boavista. It is spacious, full of natural light and the staff could not be nicer, even when they are swimming in hard work. How to get there: Casa da Música metro station is 5 minutes away on foot.

Chill out at the spa in Sheraton Porto Hotel & Spa

Diversas localizações.

spa sheraton hotel porto boavista

If you are clueless about the best things to do in Boavista and feel like pampering yourself the why not take a massage at the Sheraton Hotel & Spa ? It is considered one of the top hotels in Porto and features a spa when you can enjoy body and face massages both single or couple’s. How to get there: Casa da Música metro station is 15 minutes away on foot.

Have lunch in Goela

Avenida da boavista, 4 | porto.

asian dish goela restaurant boavista

Chefe João Ribeiro describes his cuisine as “random comfort food” and that definition is spot on. I have rarely seen so much creativity in one chef who offers a different menu EVERY DAY, often with inspiration from beyond this countries borders.

In August Goela Abaixo had some construction work done and as a result now has a lot more room to accommodate its customers. Outdoors they can seat about 14 people with another 6 inside. This means that in the winter the restaurant will be more comfortable, but the chef admits there are still some improvements to be done.

There are two daily specials (one of them vegetarian) for 7€, soup for 2€ and the salad for 1,5€. If that doesn’t sound like your thing they also have options a la carte – if you’re in luck I recommend the sun dried tomato arancini which is to die for.

O Goela tem uma esplanada pequena (14 lugares) e meia dúzia de lugares no interior, pelo que recomendo que marque lugar. Também tem serviço de take away.

Given the limited space in the restaurant I would highly recommend that you book beforehand. It also does take-aways.

How to get there: Casa da Música metro station is 15 minutes away on foot.
