Vrindavan Detailed Travel Guide | To-Do List, History, Darshan, Mandir, Weather, How to Reach, Hotels, Festivals, Radha Krishna Stories

M any people often have a deep desire to visit Vrindavan and at some point in life plan to visit Vrindavan once.

They have a conception that Vrindavan would be like forests and untouched with modernisation. Contrary to the notion what people have in their mind, externally Vrindavan has undergone a rapid level of infrastructural progress and is home to many high rise apartments, superstores, pizza outlets and grand marble temples with a high footfall of domestic as well as international tourists and pilgrims daily.

However, a lot of old temples in and around Loi Bazar retain that vintage and traditional Vrindavan feel.

In this exhaustive Vrindavan Travel Guide , I will guide you with all the details you need to plan a Vrindavan trip in such a way that you take back some great memories with yourself apart from gaining spiritually and being coloured in Vraja Prema Bhakti whenever you plan to visit here.

History & Story

Vrindavan is the abode of the love of Srimati Radharani and Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

The story and lilas of Krishna are known to all, but only in parts and pieces to the majority of masses. I will connect it on basic terms for people who are unaware.

So, as most of you might be knowing, Krishna was born in Mathura and from there, Vasudev Ji (his father) crossed the Yamuna and left the baby Krishna at his friend Nanda Baba's home in Gokul. Krishna was lovingly raised by Nanda Baba and Yashoda Maiya. When He became a bit grown up, He directed the information to Kans that it is nobody other than Him who is destined to kill Kans.

The book 'Demystifying The Mystical Vrindavan' is the essence  and  crux  of this entire website.

If you are considering to dive into the final goal of our Vedic Scriptures and spiritual life, and if Radharani inspires you, do get a copy of the book .

Upon hearing this, evil Kans burned the entire village of Gokul in a hope to burn Krishna, and eventually kill his death. Krishna has already made His plans, and before the army of Kans were about to burn Gokul, Krishna convinced Nanda Baba to go and take shelter at Vrishbanu Baba's village Barsana. It was all a pastime of Krishna to spend time with Srimati Radharani in Barsana and perform His divine lila's to teach the world prema-bhakti and reclaim the conditioned souls to go back home, back to godhead Goloka Vrindavan.

From there, Vrishabhanu Baba gifted the Gokulvasis the holy land of Vrindavan, which became the place where Radharani and Krishna perform the nitya transcendental lilas. Vrindavan attracts all sincere seekers and colours them with the inner confidential love of prema-bhakti that is extremely rare and not even accessible to yogis, siddha saints, tapasvis and even demi-gods like Shiva Ji and Brahma Ji.

In this age of Kali, the confidential aspects of vraja-prema rasa can be easily understood by chanting Hare Krishna Mahamantra loudly with full engagement, exactly how a child cries for his mother. While chanting the holy names, cry loudly to Srimati Radharani and Krishna for direction to the most confidential aspect of vraja prema-bhakti .

When is the best time to come to Vrindavan?

The very day this thought comes to your mind . Franky, not everybody can come to Vrindavan even if planning for long. I have experienced it first hand and the same with so many friends around me. Sometimes, the train gets cancelled, sometimes the way to airport route is abuzz with heavy traffic and you miss your flight, sometimes last-minute work cancels the plan, and sometimes you come till Mathura but are unable to visit Vrindavan.

And however weird or funny it may sound, all of a sudden you wake up one day and feel inspired to go to Vrindavan and you just take the next train, bus or simply begin driving to Vrindavan impromptu. So, the day you feel deeply inspired to come to Vrindavan, simply leave all the work and begin your journey to the most confidential abode of the love of Srimati Radharani and Sri Krishna, Sri Vrindavan Dham.

  • It is said in Samudra Shastra that anybody who does penance and tapasya for thousands of lifetimes gets the chance to take a step in Vrindavan. Srila Rupa Goswami mentions in Mathura Mahatmya that with just a step in Vrindavan, the sins accumulated in thousands of lifetimes is destroyed within a second.
  • There are so many scriptures glorifying the exalted position of Vrindavan (which as stated in these scriptures itself, is very difficult for even them to glorify it properly).

Though, Janmashtami, Radhamastmi, Holi and Kartik (Damodar) Mas are extremely visited times of the year by devotees from all over the world. (Further details below)

If you are just a couple of people, or in multiples of 2, you can rent a bike from Srila Prabhupada Emporium at Hare Krishna Residency, just near to the Bonraj Maharaj College and on the adjacent side of Main Gate of ISKCON Temple. They will take a security deposit of 1000 rupees, and will charge 500 rupees for Activa scooter and bikes. The advantage you will get is that you can go to any place around Vrindavan easily. Also, you can quickly visit Mathura, Barsana, Govardhan, Radha Kund easily. Must-do activities in Vrindavan

I would highly suggest any devotee or tourist coming to Vrindavan to make sure to participate in the below mentioned devotional activities.

Though every step in Vrindavan destroys sins of thousands of lifetimes and also bestows the result of 100 Ashwamedha Yagyas, what Rasika Vaishnavas teach is to be a seeker of vraja-prema bhakti .

As repeated by exalted saints and scriptures every now and then, in this age of Kali Yuga, vraja prema bhakti can easily be understood by following point number 2 below. Do try to experience the below-mentioned points and take back some wonderful memories with yourself when you come for Vrindavan trip.

Yamuna Boat Ride

Visit Kesi Ghat and take a boat ride. There are many boats there and they usually charge an arbitrary amount once they get a feel that you are a tourist so do not forget to negotiate with them. The ideal price would be 150 or 200 bucks for a 20-30 minute ride duration. It is a wonderful experience to witness the ghat from the waters of Yamuna Maharani as Keshi Ghat retains that traditional vintage vibe. If possible, do take Yamuna Snan or take achman if you are unable to take snan (bath).

Kirtan at ISKCON

There is a fully charged up enthusiastic kirtan at ISKCON Krishna Balarama Mandir 24 hours a day. It has been going on since 1986. It was re-established by Sripad Aindra Prabhu . You just step inside the temple hall and automatically get engaged in the Harinam Sankirtana. This is the final conclusion of all Vedic Scriptures. Harer Nama Eva Kevalam i.e. in Kali Yuga, there is nothing except Harinam for the deliverance of fallen conditioned souls.

Banke Bihari Darshan

The darshan at Banke Bihari Mandir is a tad different as the curtain opens and closes every alternate 10-30 seconds. The deities of Banke Bihari Ji just create a powerful impression on the viewer. You will witness a different experience here.

Yamuna Arti

Evening arti at Keshi Ghat on banks of Yamuna Maharani is flocked by devotees worldwide. There is a grand arti and you just get engaged in the festivities there. It starts at 5.30 and sometimes at 6 PM. Though, be careful not to wear spectacles there as monkeys can snatch it very easily. Also, be aware not to speak to anyone local or dicey here and do keep your mobile and wallet safe.

Chant Hare Krishna Mahamantra internally

While in Vrindavan, keep chanting Hare Krishna Hare Krishna | Krishna Krishna Hare Hare | Hare Rama Hare Rama | Rama Rama Hare Hare on your lips. You can get a bead and bead bag for 50-100 rupees anywhere in Vrindavan and keep chanting here. Krishna and Srimati Radharani become pleased with anybody who chants the holy names. Taking 1 nama (name) of Krishna in Vrindavan gives the result of taking Krishna's name 1000 times. Hence, try to keep chanting Hare Krishna Mahamantra when you are here (It would be nice if you can start if from the moment you read this from anywhere in the world). Chanting Hare Krishna maha-mantra manifests everything from within and gives you direction at every juncture of life about the very purpose of life itself.

Put Vraj Soil on head

Don't understand anything but really are seeking answers on what is so confidential about Vrindavan? Just put some Vraj mitti (soil) on the head while you are here and pray to the holy land of Vrindavan to give you direction. You would be surprised by how quickly our merciful Sri Vrindavan Dham guides you.

mathura vrindavan tour

A Perfect Mathura-Vrindavan 3 Day Itinerary

Mathura and Vrindavan are not new names in the tourism industry. These historically and theologically significant cities have been famous as tourist destinations for decades now. If you are confused about your Mathura Vrindavan Tour, look no further. It all began with Hindu pilgrims attempting to achieve atonement by visiting the birthplace of Lord Krishna in their trip to Vrindavan.

As commercialization and capitalism hit, the tourism industry of India grew and made these not just mythologically important, but also economically stable and archaeologically rich. The monuments, temples, and forts have been renovated and renewed as the Archeological Survey of India has taken responsibility for the maintenance of some.

What To Do on the Mathura-Vrindavan Tour?

There are a hundred places to be and things to do in your Mathura Gokul Vrindavan tour. Here is a carefully curated itinerary making the best out of your trip.

Day 1

Your trip begins from Mathura on the first day as you scout the city for its cultural and religious heritage.

  • Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple and Complex : This temple is the official highlight of the tour as people opt for a Vrindavan Mathura tour to visit the birthplace of Lord Krishna. There is a massive temple where you can attend a puja and pray. The surrounding complex offers holy memoirs, threads, and more for you to carry back home.
  • Mathura Museum : After paying homage to the birthplace of Krishna, you can visit the Mathura Museum which is filled with artefacts and historical assets.
  • Kans Qila : Kans Qila is both of historical as well as archaeological importance and an absolute must in the Mathura Gokul Vrindavan tour. The fortified castle is believed to have been built during 5500 BC and is named after Krishna’s uncle, Kans.
  • Jama Masjid : Built during the reign of Aurangzeb by the then governor Abd-al-nabi Khan, Jama Masjid in Mathura is a 17th century cultural and religious hotspot that is best visited during the afternoon hours for the daily Roza.
  • Kusum Sarovar : Kusum Sarovar is the sacred water reservoir located in Govardhan Hills. It is situated between Radha Kund and Manasi Ganga and is an excellent place to end your day trip by witnessing the extraordinary view of the sunset.
  • Krishna Nagar Market : After spending the day roaming around the most vibrant and important places in your Mathura Vrindavan tour it is needless to say that you must attend the Krishna Nagar Market for some shopping of local goods, memoirs for friends and family, etc. It is also famous for its exquisite collection of bright glass bangles, jewellery, handicrafts, antiques and woodworks.

places to visit in vrindavan quora

The first half of your second day should be spent covering a few must-visit places in Mathura before you travel to Vrindavan later.

  • Vishram Ghat : You can start the second day of your Vrindavan Mathura tour by visiting Vishram Ghat very early in the morning to witness the mesmerizing sunrise view it offers. You can sit in the quiet ghat and enjoy a cup or two of the sweetened milk tea early stall keepers make.
  • Barshana Shri Radha Rani Temple : Start your day by visiting the Barshana Shri Radha Rani temple built to celebrate and remember Radha and her life. The temple is famous among pilgrims and tourists alike due to its historical importance of being a temple dedicated solely to Radha.
  • Elephant Conservation & Care Center : This is India’s first and only Elephant Conservation and Care Center. It is a safe haven for the rehabilitation of rescued elephants. The facility offers guided tours to the tourists, and you get to watch the enormous mammals live their daily lives. Old, sick, pregnant, and lost elephants are all brought in here.
  • Radha Kund and Shyam Kund : Radha Kund and Shyam Kunds are famous water reservoirs that tourists never miss. Legend has it that Radha and Krishna bathed in these water bodies during their time. You can enjoy the scenic beauty as well as the mythological significance of the location.

You can have your lunch and pack your bags to travel to Mathura Vrindavan tour by bus, but not before you go a little farther to Nandgaon. Nandgaon is of utmost mythological importance as it is known to be the home of Lord Krishna when he lived with his foster parents Nanda and Yashoda for a decade. It is a one-hour drive from Mathura and marks the end of your second day.

The final day of the trip consists of rivers, monuments, and good food.

  • Keshi Ghat : If you are on your trip to Vrindavan, you must start the day by watching the sunrise from Keshi Ghat. It is among the top tourist destinations at Vrindavan and you can get a great view of the river Yamuna from the banks. People also take baths in the ghat in order to purify themselves.
  • Prem Mandir : Spread across a campus of 55 acres of land, this temple is a massive structure dedicated to both Radha-Krishna and Sita-Ram. It is on the outskirts of Vrindavan and is maintained by an international non-profit named Jagatguru Kripalu Parishat.
  • Madan Mohan : With terra cotta exterior and river views, the Madan Mohan temple in Vrindavan ranks high among the most popular tourist spots. It is believed to be built in the 16th century and is among the oldest temples in the city.
  • ISKCON Vrindavan : After visiting multiple holy temples, one must stop to visit ISKCON Vrindavan, a true wonder. Iskon also offers accommodation services, which is free to all its members. If you go there within 12 PM to 2 PM, you will be able to avail of their free and delicious lunch.
  • Seva Kunj : After roaming the city for the entire day, you can relax at Seva Kunj and watch the sunset from there, as the location promises breathtaking views of the sunset before returning to your home boarding a UPSRTC bus the next day.

If you want to squeeze in the best parts of the adjoined cities of Vrindavan and Mathura in your three-day trip, there are some things you can’t afford to miss. Book your tickets for the Mathura Vrindavan tour by bus because you are all covered on the itinerary.

11 Options for Staying at Mathura and Vrindavan

From Hotels to Ashrams, Accommodations for All Budgets

places to visit in vrindavan quora

vbel71/Getty Images

There are various options for accommodations in the holy towns of Mathura and Vrindavan, in Uttar Pradesh. Hotels in Mathura are more plentiful than hotels in Vrindavan, although quality is often lacking and congested Mathura is not as appealing.

In Vrindavan, the old part of town is particularly atmospheric. This is where you'll find inexpensive guesthouses and ashram accommodations. The downside is that they tend to be very basic. Popular ISKCON Temple is situated on the outskirts of town and the accommodations near it are more modern (and costly), although the temple does have a guesthouse. If you want to experience the ancient spiritual side of Vrindavan, it's better to stay nearer to Banke Bihari Temple, which is closer to the old town.

The festivals of Holi and Krishna Janmasthami attract huge crowds, so be sure to make reservations well in advance for these occasions.

Nidhivan Sarovar Portico, Vrindavan

The Nidhivan Sarovar Portico is a relatively new hotel that opened in May 2013 on the outskirts of Vrindavan, just off Bhaktivedanta Swami Marg (the main road) near ISKCON Temple and Prem Mandir. As you'd expect, the interiors are fresh and attractive, and facilities are a notch above what other hotels offer. Guests particularly love the food. If you want to stay in the best hotel in Vrindavan, this is it! There are 58 rooms. Rates start from around 3,500 rupees per night for a double, including tax, and may go up to around 6,000 rupees per night during peak season. Breakfast is extra.

Kridha Residency, Vrindavan

On the main road and closer to Prem Mandir and the ISKCON Temple, contemporary Kridha Residency is also popular. It opened in 2011 and gets its name from the union of Krishna and Radha. Although the hotel is modern, it aims to convey a spiritual feel. There are 50 exceptionally spacious rooms (including three and four bedrooms suites, and a four bedroom villa -- fantastic for families!) with private balconies. Facilities include a vegetarian South Indian restaurant and in-house car service. Guests really appreciate the hotel's outstanding hospitality. Rates start from around 2,000 rupees per night, and may go up to 4,000 rupees per night during peak season.

MVT Bhaktivedanta Ashram, Vrindavan

The Mayapur Vrindavana Trust Bhaktivedanta Ashram guesthouse provides a tranquil and secure place to stay amid scenic landscaped grounds right next to the ISKCON Temple. Established in 1972, the hotel's neat and simply furnished rooms, with air-conditioning and wireless Internet, are a step up from the usual bare ashram accommodations and attract a lot of foreigners. There's a healthy organic vegetarian restaurant on the premises. Expect to pay about 1,800 rupees per night for a room upwards.

Hotel Brijwasi Royal, Mathura

The Brijwasi Royal, one of the most popular hotels in the heart of Mathura, is a reliable choice. It's strategically located not far from the railway station. The hotel's restaurant serves tasty and inexpensive food, and the service desk is very efficient in making travel arrangement for guests. Room rates start from around 3,000 rupees for a double, per night, including breakfast. Family rooms are also available. If you'd prefer to stay a short distance out of town, try the sprawling Brijwasi Lands Inn situated just off the Delhi-Agra road.

Centrum Hotel by Brijwasi, Mathura

Also by the renowned locally-based Brijwasi Group, the Centrum Hotel is a cheaper alternative near the railway station and bus stand in Mathura. It's a brand new hotel that opened in 2017 and has 30 generously-sized guest rooms. It's well-maintained, secure and cozy with a great range of facilities including free wireless Internet. There's also a restaurant and sweet shop on the premises. Rates start from about 2,300 rupees per night for an air-conditioned double.

Hotel Krishnam, Vrindavan

Hotel Krishnam is a modern hotel that opened a few years ago in a super convenient location on the main road midway between the ISKCON Temple and Banke Bihari Temple. It's possible to walk to either temple in around 10 minutes from the hotel. There are 40 good-sized rooms, a multi-cuisine restaurant, and travel desk. Rates start from about 2,800 rupees per night. Breakfast is included.

Vrinda Palace Seva Dham, Vrindavan

Vrinda Palace Seva Dham is an noteworthy new budget hotel in a quiet, developing interior location away from the main road but still less less than half a mile from the ISKCON Temple. There are 40 clean and comfortable rooms with basic amenities, including air-conditioning. Service is excellent and the hotel is great value for money! You may be in luck and be able to get a room for under 2,000 rupees per night. Otherwise, rates go up to around 3,000 rupees per night during busy times.

Shubham Hotels and Resorts, Vrindavan

The Shubham Group has quality budget properties in Vrindavan near Banke Bihari Temple. The group's first property, the Hotel The Shubham , has 24 rooms priced at around 1,700 rupees per night for a double with air conditioning. The newer Hotel Shubham Holidays has 40 rooms (including triple and family rooms) with rates starting from around 1,500 rupees per night for a double with air conditioning. The Shubham Holidays is particularly good value for money. A third, larger, property called the Shubham Majesty opened in 2011. It has 60 rooms and is priced at around 2,600 rupees per night.

Ananda Krishna Van, Vrindavan

Ananda Krishna Van is a large hotel with 120 rooms and a delightful huge garden setting in the area behind ISKCON temple (about a 10 minute walk away). It caters mostly to families on pilgrimages. Kids will love the open space, swings, and pet rabbits! The hotel also has a vegetarian restaurant. Rates range from 2,000 rupees per night to 4,000 rupees per night, depending on the number of people. Breakfast is extra.

Vrinda Kunja Ashram, Vrindavan

Vrinda Kunja

If you're looking to experience the ashram lifestyle in the old city, Vrinda Kunja is one of the best (and cleanest) places to stay. Its leafy, sacred grounds are home to the world center of the Vrinda Mission and its Vrindavan Institute for Vaisnava Culture and Studies. The ashram is one of Vrinda's Yoga Eco Villages and many of the residents are Spanish speaking Krishna devotees. Visitors can participate in chanting, yoga, meditation, discourse with the Swami, and volunteer work . Numerous activities can also be arranged advance, including walking meditations through the town's alleyways, yoga workshops, Ayurveda, Vastu principles, and astrology. Basic rooms, with shared bathrooms, are available for 400 rupees per night for spiritual seekers. Standard rooms with private attached bathrooms and air-conditioning cost 900 rupees per night for a double. There are also triple rooms, priced at 1,000-1,200 rupees per night. Meals are extra and cost 100 rupees each.

Munger Mandir Guest House, Vrindavan

Munger Mandir Guest House is another decent option for an authentic ashram stay in Vrindavan. It's located on the Mathrua-Vrindavan Road, near the Rama Krishan Mission. Musicians perform live Krisha devotional songs in the main ashram building throughout the day, creating a special atmosphere. There's a wide range of accommodations. Rates range from 250 rupees to 1,000 rupees per night, depending on facilities. The more costly rooms have hot water and air conditioning, while the cheapest ones have squat toilets. Meals are included in the price.
