I could only pick one, I’d say R&R Curry !  It’s a local Indian restaurant with amazing food.  For a date night, Stonehouse is hard to beat (gorgeous restored rock building, and some of the best food I’ve had).  There are also several good hole-in-the-wall places that we frequent downtown, serving authentic Asian food, or Salvadorian “pupusas.”

If you want something free, but fabulous, definitely the Janet Huckabee Nature Center (hiking trails, fishing, canoeing, a nature-themed playground, archery, natural history displays and activities indoors, a beautiful deck with a great view, wildlife demonstrations, and honestly a great gift shop to boot).  

Parrot Island (waterpark) is exciting for the kids in the summer months.  Our kids also love Spartan Adventure Park for a special outing; it’s indoors for those rainy or extra cold days. 

The Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center is built on 170 acres of land that was part of Fort Chaffee. In addition to the spacious building surrounded by hickory and oak trees, the grounds are home to a series of trails and Wells Lake, a popular fishing destination. 5. Most unique thing to see in Fort Smith

Fort Smith has dozens of impressive murals scattered throughout the downtown district, many of which have been painted by internationally-acclaimed artists, and are definitely worth seeing!  Ft. Smith is also a historic “Wild West” town, so there are some great museums and historic sites to explore.

Miss Laura’s Visitor Center , also known as “Miss Laura’s Social Club,” is situated alongside the Arkansas River in Fort Smith’s historic downtown neighborhood.

It is the only house that has survived the test of time among the houses that bordered Fort Smith’s Old West red light area.

It is now the only former bordello listed on the National Register of Historic Places. And the house has been completely restored to its former glory.

The house is a Victorian mansion that has essentially become a symbol of this once-raucous border town’s colorful past.

When you visit, you’ll be able to explore the property extensively.

Some of the staff here will guide you, and you will get to see the home in its original grandeur. Coupled with that, you’ll also see many exhibits and artifacts.

2. Fort Smith Regional Art Museum

Fort Smith Regional Art Museum is one of Fort Smith’s best tourist attractions.

Some of the Regional Art Museum events include galas, members-only events, artist-led workshops, children’s art camps, and many more.

The opening of the museum at 1601 Rogers Avenue in the heart of Fort Smith in January 2013 marked a turning point for the organization. And today, The Museum offers far more programs and exhibitions than its predecessor.

The Regional Art Museum has received the Historic Preservation Alliance of Arkansas’ 2013 Preservation through Rehabilitation Award. As well as the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) Gold Award in 2014.

Additionally, the museum has a specialty gift shop. The shops are filled with one-of-a-kind goods created by local and regional artists. The museum also makes its facilities available for rentals.

3. Fort Smith Little Theatre

Fort Smith Little Theatre is Arkansas’s longest-running community theatre. It has been entertaining local audiences in the city since 1947!

4. The Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center

The Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center is located on 170 acres of former Fort Chaffee grounds in Fort Smith.

The structure looks out over Wells Lake, a favorite fishing and picnicking spot in the area!

This place is an excellent park loaded with lots of fun.

The nature center is located in the rich Arkansas River Valley. And it focuses on the diverse range of animals and birds that live here.

For the most part, many colorful songbirds stop by on their way to and from wintering grounds. In addition to this, there are the resident Canada geese, small animals, and turtles.

Many tourists come to the center for the fascinating displays inside, but many also enjoy the paths and native vegetation on the grounds and canoeing or fishing in the lake.

There are a lot of explorations you can have here.

The educational center consists of live native snakes, turtles, fish, and many more exhibits.

Generally, the building only opens up on Tuesday-Saturday: 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. However, the grounds are always open.

For tourists interested in water-related activities, staff members can provide assistance. They will assist boaters on Wells Lake.

Furthermore, participants must wear life jackets, which will be provided.

Other fun activities you can do here include archery, swimming, fishing, Picnicking, and many more.

5. The Unexpected Project

The Unexpected project is a downtown revitalization project in Fort Smith that began in 2015. It was launched by 64.6 Downtown.

Since the project began, Downtown Fort Smith has been converted into a world-class destination for urban and contemporary public art.

More than 30 pieces by highly sought-after international artists are here.

Artworks by renowned artists such as D*Face, Ana Maria, Askew, Okuda San Miguel, Bordalo II, Maser, Hoxxoh, and others have been added to the increasing collection of permanent/semi-permanent outdoor art.

6. McClure Amphitheater

McClure Amphitheater is located near Chaffee Crossing Historic District. It was established by the US Army as a training facility in 1953.

It now serves as a City of Fort Smith specialty park and outdoor gathering spot.

The McClure Amphitheater can be used for reunions, performances, meetings, and other special events.

They charge a fee for rent, and you can have the place to yourself for all the exciting events you have planned.

You can also enjoy the entertainment and events the Amphitheater has to offer.

The Amphitheater also provides a beautiful view of the River Valley, and it’s a lovely spot for a picnic lunch or small gathering.

7. Fort Smith National Historic Site

Fort Smith National Historic Site offers you the opportunity to walk where Mexican War and Civil War soldiers drilled.

In this place, you can pause along the Trail of Tears. And you can stand where justice was administered to some of the Wild West’s most terrible outlaws.

Belle Point (First Fort Smith):

This place was founded in 1817 on a cliff overlooking the confluence of the Arkansas and Poteau Rivers.

It was then named by 18th-century French fur trappers as Belle Point, the French word for “beautiful sight.”

Visitors can stroll the foundation remains of the first Fort Smith and enjoy a spectacular view of the two rivers.

Overlook of the Trail of Tears:

You can take a stroll along the mighty Arkansas River while viewing display panels that explain the narrative of the five civilized nations. The information boards are exciting, and it’s good to learn the history of the location.

The Commissary, Fort Smith Gallows, and Second Fort Smith Grounds:

The Commissary is Fort Smith’s oldest structure.

Judge Parker’s chambers were upstairs during federal court time. Today, you can see it as it was in the 1850s when it served food to military forces.

A recreation of the Fort Smith Gallows may be found on the park’s grounds. According to history, a startling number of Wild West outlaws met their end with ropes to their necks.

8. Massard Prairie Battlefield Park

Massard Prairie was a favored grazing pasture for Union troops and residents during the Civil War. It was added to the Arkansas Register of Historic Places on November 7, 2001.

Confederate troops launched a surprise attack on Union troops stationed at the site on July 27, 1864. Therefore, completing one of their most effective raids on Union troops in Arkansas.

Today, the site honors the men who died in the war by conserving the four principal portions of the camp.

These principal portions of the camp are the Parade Ground, the kitchen or “mess,” and the camps of Companies B and D.

However, you can also find historical markers, a monument, a memorial flagstaff, and a walking track in the park.

9. Fort Smith Air Museum

The Fort Smith Air Museum is a really fascinating place for lovers of aircraft.

When the new Fort Smith Regional Airport Terminal was finished in September 2002, the Fort Smith Air Museum moved there and established itself.

Currently, there are sixty-four display cases dedicated to western Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma pioneers, and wartime aviators in this museum.

Generally, the display cases are near the main entrance and by the Baggage Claim area.

As a matter of fact, a Piper J-3 “Cub” on loan from Ann Weaver of Roland, Oklahoma, once hung in the main entrance to Central Mall on Rogers Avenue in Fort Smith. But now, it’s currently in storage and is also on display at the air museum.

The exhibits celebrating Arkansas’s aviation heroes are fantastic. And if you’re lucky enough to be present when the museum’s curator and tour guide are available to explain some of the exhibits, you’ll have the best of times.

10. Fort Smith Symphony

The Fort Smith Symphony . A home of astounding performances and magical melodies. Simply music at its finest.

The ArcBest Performing Arts Center at the Fort Smith Convention Center hosts the performances.

The Fort Smith Symphony was founded in 1923. They are one of Arkansas’ finest orchestras. As a matter of fact, they have a loyal following and sold-out concerts throughout the state!

For rehearsals and concerts, the orchestra brings together approximately 100 professional musicians together. Musicians from Oklahoma, Missouri, Texas, Kansas, Tennessee, Iowa, New York, Florida, and, of course, Arkansas.

The orchestra is continuously recognized for its artistic accomplishments. And also for its award-winning educational programs at regional, national, and worldwide levels.

You can buy a ticket to one of the performances and listen to the most melodious and magical sounds created by the talented maestros here.

The performances are simply magical.

The orchestra’s three-CD/downloads on the well-known Naxos label, for example, contain the first full cycle of recorded symphonies by William Grant Still.

Also, a full-length motion picture documentary and a television pilot have both been made about the Symphony. And you can get a copy at the venue.

In summary, this place is so remarkable that you’ve got to visit it at least once in your lifetime!. And a lot more than once if you’re chanced to.

11. St. Scholastica Monastery

This is one of Fort Smith’s most iconic places. It’s a place the city is proud of and it’s one of their best tourist attractions.

St. Scholastica Monastery is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. And this is due to its influence in the areas of Education, architecture, and religion.

The original structure was designed by F.W. Redlich of Oklahoma City in 1923. Ordinarily, It was a 5-story buff-colored brick building, ornamented with Carthage and Bedford stone with a green clay tile roof.

The purchase in 1925 of an additional 28 acres adjacent to the old “Barnes Place” tract increased the site to a total of 67 acres.

Over time, In 1928, a second wing was added, including a chapel with a seating capacity of 300, a gymnasium, and an auditorium.

On the west end of this addition is a six-story tower that has two decorated-style buttressed towers. These towers rise nearly 7 stories.

Also, the towers are right on the verge of an elaborate cut-stone Gothic-arched entry to the monastery.

One thing that will strike you when you visit here is the magnificence and beauty of the place.

The grounds are remarkably beautiful. Coupled with that is also the sense of order and harmony that is throughout the entire campus.

One more thing, you’ll love walking around this place. Especially through the beautifully kept labyrinth.

To arrange an interior tour of the new monastery building, you need to call and book at least one day in advance.

12. The Clayton House

Take a tour of the Clayton House and travel back in time to 1882.

The year when William Henry Harrison Clayton, owner of the Clayton House, and his family traveled to Indian Territory to join in the genuine, courageous fight for peace and justice (modern-day Oklahoma).

The Clayton House boasts an excellently maintained collection of 19th-century furnishings. It also has historical features such as coal-burning fireplaces, as well as an antebellum (pre-war) residence.

Henry Clayton rebuilt the residence into an Italianate-style mansion with a somber and grave appearance.

The Clayton House serves as a living history book of Fort Smith’s elegant Victorian period. Visiting here simply launches you to the past and makes you treasure elegance and beauty.

The Italianate-style mansion also provides a perfect setting for weddings and private gatherings with its stately parlors and expansive grounds.

13. The Gallery on Garrison

The Gallery on Garrison is a one-of-a-kind art and gallery space. The gallery hosts traditional art exhibitions as well as paint-and-sip parties, art classes, residency programs, and many more activities.

In addition to these services, Melody Smith’s personal art studio is located on-site. Here she creates one-of-a-kind pieces for exhibition and sale.

You can take art lessons here. Just pour yourself a glass of wine, put on your apron, and take a seat in front of an easel! The Artist here will guide you through the process of creating a work of art that you will be proud to hang in your home.

Alternatively, you could just participate in the paint-and-sip parties. Besides, these parties are a fun way to celebrate birthdays, bridal showers, and other special occasions.

The Gallery provides private paint and sips events for groups of 10 or more people, as well as corporate team-building activities.

Temple Live is a 53,000 sq-ft Masonic Temple. It first opened in 1929 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

The building is made of Bedford Stone and has four stories. It also features three huge banquet halls, a full basement with a commercial kitchen, and a full auditorium that seats 1,200 people.

The historic building has been carefully restored to give a unique ambiance for meetings, gatherings, special events, and stage plays by utilizing its original architectural features.

Creekmore Park is located in Fort Smith’s downtown area. It is directly across from the main branch of the Fort Smith Public Library.

The Creekmore park features the Creekmore Express Train and Creekmore Holiday Express.

It also features an 18-hole miniature golf course, a fitness trail, a tennis center, and courts.

It’s also including playground equipment, a community center, and the region’s largest outdoor Olympic-sized swim and dive facility.

Throughout the summer, the park hosts a range of indoor and outdoor activities and programs that you can get involved in, such as Movies in the Park, Pop-Up Play Days, and more.

This is why birthday parties, reunions, meetings, and other events can be held at the park and community center.

The train is also a popular attraction among park visitors of all ages.

Creekmore Park is home to three miniature trains in total. A conventional diesel train is also available, and it is conveniently placed in the heart of Fort Smith.

There is a fantastic running/walking path in the park where you can just take a stroll. You could also test your speed and endurance in a run. And for the kids, there is a nice playground.

17. Fort Smith Museum of History

The Fort Smith Museum of History is one place you should visit in Fort Smith. This establishment works to preserve about 40,000 objects from the city’s history and as well care for the museum’s home.

There are lots of different things to see and learn about in this museum.

The first-floor chronology takes visitors through the creation and development of the city that formed around the 1817 military fort. It is one of the permanent exhibitions.

The William O. Darby Memorial Room relates the narrative of the man who founded Darby’s Rangers. The forerunners of today’s Army Rangers, during World War II.

Also, the Boyd Gallery hosts both temporary and visiting exhibitions that draw on the museum’s extensive artifact collection.

Similarly, the second floor features furnishings from Judge Isaac C. Parker’s courtroom, as well as an exhibit on the building’s history.

It records the progress in this small Frontier Town. And also features an excellent collection of 19th-century woodworking tools.

On the Air, playing consistently is an interactive display depicting the region’s broadcast history, and an exhibit on Fort Smith’s African-American history.

It’s really an outstanding museum with a good history of Fort Smith. And we would totally recommend this place as a must-see if in town.

As a bonus, there is also an active trolley outside the museum if you want to ride an antique trolley.

18. United States Marshals Museum

The United States Marshals Museum is a museum built to honor the U. S. Marshals.

It features a unique exterior, with a modified star-shaped design signifying the star badge worn by courageous U.S. Marshals.

Inside, five immersive galleries educate guests about the critical, ever-strengthened role in which the Marshals have played in upholding the Rule of Law. And they do this driven by the virtues of justice, integrity, and service.

The Museum’s National Learning Center combines the Museum’s experience with education programming focused on the Constitution, the Rule of Law, and civic literacy. So it isn’t just a mere tour, you get enriched with more knowledge and you get to appreciate the constitution and the Country more.

In the first gallery, visitors will be led to understand the role of a marshal. The guides will tell you how the agency was founded, its principles and duties, and a broad overview of its history.

You’ll also get to explore a high-level timeline of the history of the Marshals. Beginning with the inception of their role in the Judiciary Act of 1789 and continuing to the vital work of the Service today.

Set into the timeline, a series of interactive exhibits will uncover the different type of work for which the U.S. Marshals are responsible. From supporting the courts to protect witnesses, also from tracking down fugitives to managing operations for disaster relief.

If you’re looking to get the best deals and great quality at that, then you shouldn’t miss visiting Fort Smith’s Farmer’s market.

There are more than 90 traders in different trades here. From growers, craftsmen, and other sorts of merchants. They provide an abundant supply of different farm produce.

The different farm products range from fresh vegetables, flowers, handcrafted chocolates, baked products, canned jams, and preserves.

There are also high-quality wood-turning items, gourmet coffees, organic eggs, grass-fed beef, and so much more on each market day.

In addition, street performers and local musicians liven up the atmosphere in the market.

Regularly, community organizations, tourists, and locals all congregate at the Saturday market.

There is ample parking nearby, as well as on-site handicapped parking.

However, from late spring through fall, the Fort Smith Farmer’s Market on Garrison Avenue is open.

For a more affordable option, Fort Smith also has a  Downtown Splash Pad  located near West End Park. The splash pad features 10 dancing fountains and color-changing LEDs (at night). This is a free park, open to the public.

Enjoy an Old-Fashioned Ice Cream Soda

At the  Fort Smith Museum of History , take a step back in time by visiting a working exhibit that serves old-fashioned sodas, ice cream, sundaes, and floats. If you’re not a museum lover, I promise this one’s worth a visit, even if only for the sweet treats. 

The museum highlights the contributions of locals to the development of the Fort Smith area. Hours of operation are 10-4, Tuesday through Saturday. Be sure to verify hours before visiting.

Skateboard at Riverfront Skate & Bike Park

Open from sunrise to sundown,  Riverfront Skate & Bike Park  caters to skaters and bikers of all levels. Overlooking the Arkansas River, the park offers 12,000 square feet of skate obstacles, a mountain bike playground, pump tracks, and more.

Over the years, the building ran through several owners and lay abandoned for some time. Eventually, it was restored and in 1992, it opened as the official visitor center.

The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and offers free guided tours seven days a week. Equipped with lots of helpful tourism brochures and Fort Smith experts, Miss Laura’s is also a great place to start your trip.

5. See the Park at West End

This beautiful downtown park is a great place to spend an afternoon. With a Ferris wheel, a carousel, a railcar diner, a splash pad and a bus concession stand, the park offers recreational fun and dining opportunities.

6. Visit the Fort Smith Museum of History

Established in 1910, this museum preserves and showcases Fort Smith history. The museum is located in the 1906 Atkinson-Williams Warehouse and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The museum’s highlights include a 1920s soda fountain, a hands-on telephone exhibit, a 1,500-piece doll exhibit and a Niloak poetry collection.

7. Stroll through the Belle Grove Historic District

Spanning 22 blocks, the Belle Grove Historic District is a beautifully preserved residential area that displays a variety of architectural styles, with the oldest home dating back to 1840.

Take a stroll through the district and check out some of its most prominent houses, including the John Rogers House, Casper Reutzel House, the Clayton House, the Belle Grove School and the Darby House. The area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is bounded by North 5th Street, North H Street, North 8th Street, and North C Street.

8. Relax at the Lake Fort Smith State Park

Outdoor lovers can’t miss a trip to this 260-acre state park . Located on the banks of Lake Fort Smith, the park invites visitors to spend a day fishing, kayaking, hiking and biking.

There are cabins, campsites, a pool, picnic sites and a large kitchenette for those hoping to stay for a while. Start off your trip with a visit to the Visitor’s Center and check out artifacts and exhibits about the area’s history.

9. See the Fort Smith Trolley Museum

Learn about the history of electric powered streetcars and ride a 1926 railcar at the Fort Smith Trolley Museum . The museum’s working Birney railcar travels a 3/4 mile between Garrison Avenue and the Fort Smith National Cemetery.

Take a ride in the authentic streetcar after exploring the museum’s collection of old railcars. The trolley runs during select hours seven-days a week. Ride tokens cost $4 for adults and $2 for kids.

10. Visit the Fort Smith Regional Art Museum

This art museum showcases traveling art exhibitions by local and international artists. Housed in an abandoned mid-century modern bank, the 16,000-square-foot museum demonstrates the value of repurposing in the name of art.

In addition to its fine art exhibits, the museum offers workshops, events and lectures, so be sure to check out the website to see what’s happening during your visit. After perusing the art, support local artists by shopping at the museum’s gift shop. The museum is closed Mondays, but open every other day.

11. Shop at the Farmers Market

Whether you’re in the mood to shop or just looking to sightsee, be sure to add the farmers market to your Fort Smith itinerary. Hosted on Garrison Avenue, this little market is hosted year-round. More than 90 vendors participate in the market, selling produce, meet, candy, jewelry, art, flowers and more.

The market also invites local organizations, performers and musicians, so it’s a great way to get to know the Fort Smith community. The market is open every Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon all year-round. From late Spring through Fall, the market is also open on Wednesdays.

12. Visit the Clayton House

Travel back in time and tour the 6,000-plus square feet of Clayton House , located on North 6th Street. This Italianate-style mansion was built for William Henry Harrison Clayton and his family, who lived there between 1882 and 1897. Restored in the 70s, the mansion appears the way it did when the Clayton family occupied it.

In addition to preserving historic architecture, the home also exhibits authentic 19th century artifacts and furniture. Take a 50-minute guided tour and dive deeper into the home’s history. It is open Tuesday through Sunday.

13. Explore the Chaffee Crossing Historic District

Another Fort Smith historic district, the Chaffee Crossing is made up of several historic sites that demonstrate Fort Chaffee’s role in the US military history, dating back to World War II.

Take a stroll through the district and see some of the most prominent sites, including the Chaffee Barbershop Museum, the Maness School House and the Enchanted Chapel.

14. See the Chaffee Barbershop Museum

Located in the Chaffee Crossing Historic District, the Fort Chaffee Barbershop once provided haircuts for army enlistees, the most famous being Elvis Presley, who suspended his rock and roll career to serve in the army.

The barbershop was restored to its 1958 appearance, and allows visitors to travel back in time and see where thousands of army enlistees received their signature buzz cut.

15. Pay Respects at the Massard Prairie Battlefield Park

T This park  preserves a Civil War battle. In 1864, confederate soldiers led a surprise attack against Union soldiers in Massard Prairie, which served as a grazing site for troops.

Now, the site memorializes the men who lost their lives and preserves the battlefield. Learn more about the historic battle, visit the memorial flagstaff and check out the park’s walking trail.

16. Visit the Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center

Spanning 170 acres, this stunning nature center is another Fort Smith must-see.

Built on land that used to be Fort Chaffee, this center offers lots of fun activities for the whole family. Spend some time in the education center, which features interactive displays, exhibits and live animals, including snakes, turtles and fish. After touring the building, head outdoors and see the area’s beautiful flora and fauna on one of the local hiking trails.

Located next to Wells Lake, the park is also a great destination for fishing and canoeing.

17. Enjoy the Unexpected Murals Project

If you’re exploring downtown Fort Smith, you’ll notice lots of outdoor art scattered throughout the city. That’s all thanks to the Unexpected Murals Project , started in 2015. This downtown revitalization project sought to bring more art to Fort Smith, and now, more than 30 art works decorate the city.

18. Have a Beer at Fort Smith Brewing Company

Take a break from sightseeing and treat yourself to a cold craft beer from Fort Smith Brewing Company . Opened in 2017, this is the only brewery in Fort Smith.

In addition to serving more than 15 beers on tap, the brewery also boasts a tasty menu, with pub food in addition to a selection of pizzas, nachos, tacos, paninis and more. The brewery also hosts events including comedy shows and live music, so be sure to check out the calendar before your visit.

Fort Smith National Historic Site is the location of the first fort of the United States District Court for Arkansas’ Western District.

What Is There To See in Fort Smith?

Fort Smith is loaded with old west charm and its historic downtown offers visitors a variety of things to see and enjoy. From museums to quirky hang out spots and everything in-between, Fort Smith has a fair share of interesting locations attractions that make it worth a visit.

1. Check Out The Beautiful Fort Smith Murals

What impressed me most about downtown are the murals that pop up everywhere you look. Many of them are absolutely incredible. If you’re looking for things to do in Fort Smith, you should definitely consider doing a mural tour. (Most of them are within easy walking distance of each other.) It was about 15 degrees the morning I set out to photograph as many murals as I could. They were all worth layering up and braving the cold to take pictures!

If you’re craving even more art, the Fort Smith Regional Art Museum offers free admission Tuesday-Saturday from 11-5, and Sunday from 1-5.

2. Fort Smith Is Home To The U.S. Marshals Museum

Recently opened in 2023, the U.S. Marshals Museum is one of the top things to do in Fort Smith. Until my visit, I had no idea what the U.S. Marshals really did and learned that the organization actually pre-dates the U.S. Secret Service!

Inside the museum you’ll find a wide range of interactive exhibits and galleries. You could easily spend a couple of hours going through all of the hands-on experiences and soaking in the history. My favorite display featured a fake invitation sent out to criminals offering free football tickets. The Marshals created a fake company, fake event, and fake promotion to attract wanted criminals. As expected, they showed up in droves and were all arrested.

3. Fort Smith Historic Site

As you might imagine, there really is a “Fort Smith” here and it’s still largely in tact. It’s free to walk around the grounds but a small admission fee is charged to enter the building and view the museum exhibits. You’ll start at the Visitors Center where you can grab a map and have your questions answered by one of the Park Rangers.

On the site you’ll see the gallows (a reproduction) where executions took place from 1873-1896. 86 men were hanged during that time frame. You’ll have the chance to view the Judge Parker’s Courtroom; the jail; and the Commissary Building. The building was once the Federal Courthouse for the Western District of Arkansas.

4. Spend Some Free Time In The Bakery District

I sort of found this place by accident while I was driving around town. The Bakery District houses a variety of local businesses like Fort Smith Coffee Company as well as some fun food trucks. Even on a blistery day, there were people playing games in the pavilion and grabbing a bite to eat.

Inside the coffee shop, there were swinging chairs and cozy spaces to relax and enjoy a drink. The Bakery District also hosts events and live music. It’s a really fun space and one of several that make Fort Smith worth visiting.

5. Other Things To Do In Fort Smith

Downtown you’ll find some nice restaurants and places to hang out. There are antique shops; a cigar lounge; breweries; and even a cool store old-time candy and fresh made fudge!

The Park At West End is an eclectic outdoor space with a small ferris wheel and other amusing decor. Inside the old railcar you’ll find a place called Wild Waffles . It was too chilly during my winter visit, but I imagine this is a fun spot to gather.

Fort Smith has its own symphony, history museum, and a plethora of historic homes to view. I’d definitely suggest driving through some of the neighborhoods near downtown, some of which still have cobblestone roads. Some homes, like The Clayton House are open for tours. Most are private residences.

6. Don’t Miss The Planters Peanut Man!

It’s about 15 minutes outside of downtown Fort Smith but roadside attraction lovers won’t want to miss Mr. Peanut! Mr. Peanut is the iconic mascot for Planters Peanuts and an historic, 30 foot high sign stands outside of the employee parking lot.

You can also find some cute mini versions of Mr. Peanut at the corner where you turn into the facility. (They’re on top of the fence posts.) There’s another Mr. Peanut statue near the security entrance in front of the actual building. Just remember it’s an a private business, so be respectful when stopping by.

Conclusion: Is Fort Smith Worth Visiting?

Yes! Fort Smith is a really lovely small town with so much to enjoy for a weekend road trip or stop for a day while traveling through the region. The local tourism office has other great ideas for dining, lodging, and events happening in town!

Taliano’s Italian Restaurant

Before we ever visited the area, numerous Arkansans would tell us of a famous restaurant tucked away in a quiet corner of downtown Fort Smith. Taliano’ s has been a staple in West Arkansas for over forty years.

In 1970, Tom Caldarera, Jr. and Jim Cadelli, childhood friends, decided to open Talianos to share their passion for authentic Italian food. Now, the family tradition continues on through Tom Caldarera, Jr. and his son Joe – and let us say, it’s a tradition that will immediately captivate you.

Talianos currently has two facilities, one being their main restaurant and Emmy’s German Restaurant located directly behind the main restaurant, where their Sunday brunch and other events take place.

When speaking with Joe Caldarera, he mentioned that prior to being a restaurant, The Knights of Columbus used the hall as an event venue. Ironically enough, Tom Caldarera, Jr. and his wife met at that very hall, prior to opening Talianos. Another added charm? The yellow house you’ll find next door to the main restaurant is where the family lived, and where Joe spent his childhood.

We had the pleasure of having Sunday Brunch at Talianos and were blown away by the vast selection of food and beverages available. Some of the highlights include bottomless mimosas, a create-your-own crepe station, freshly carved roast beef, mouth-watering fried chicken, and freshly made pastries.

In between the moments of bliss as we devoured our food, we took a moment to observe other patrons arriving at the hall. While the food is reason enough to visit, the moments we observed between Joe, his staff, and guests gave us a better insight into why this restaurant is held in such high regard. A place where the food is delicious and no one is a stranger, it’s easy to understand why Taliano’s is a favorite of both locals and visitors.

Doe’s Eat Place

You’ll immediately fall in love with their drop rolls that taste like a fried doughnut, but Doe’s Eat Place is best known for its fresh-cut steaks, broiled & fried shrimp, and Delta hot tamales. Location:  422 N 3rd St // MAP

The cooked-from-scratch menu, ample portions, and reasonable prices of traditional American foods at Calico County is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. Plus, each guest gets a complimentary cinnamon roll for starters! Yes, that’s right… CINNAMON ROLLS. Location:  2401 So. 56th Street // MAP

Things to Do in Fort Smith, Arkansas

Learn the story behind miss laura’s social club.

In 1898, Miss Laura Ziegler went to a local bank and borrowed $3,000 to renovate the former Riverfront Inn, a commercial hotel that had opened in 1896.  In 1903 she reopened as Miss Laura’s – an upscale bordello.

Then, in 1911, she sold Miss Laura’s to Bertha Gale Dean, an employee, for a whopping $48,000 (talk about a markup)! Bordellos were legal in Fort Smith until 1924 but Bertha did continue her business at Miss Laura’s for much longer than that – some even say until 1948!

Miss Laura’s was considered to be the “grandest bordello in The West” and the most upscale of all seven “row houses” in Fort Smith. It was also the first former bordello to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

It now serves as a unique visitor center and offers daily tours. We won’t spoil the rest of the tour for you, you’ll have to go for yourself to hear the story behind this fascinating piece of history at one of the most interesting things to do in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

Explore Contemporary Street Art at The Unexpected Murals Project

Each year Fort Smith invites artists from around the world to contribute an urban contemporary art piece to the Downtown Fort Smith area known as The Unexpected Murals Project. So far they have added over 20 pieces of art, ranging from outdoor murals to indoor exhibits. Prepare to be blown away by the unique designs and thought-provoking statements in a city that was named as one of the Top 8 Surprising Cities for Street Art  by AFAR.

Learn the History of the Fort Smith National Historic Site.

The Fort Smith National Historic Site has a lot of complex history to discover – most of it surrounding Judge Isaac Parker. Before he became a Judge, Isaac Parker was a lawyer in Missouri who enlisted and fought in the Civil War as a Union soldier working his way up to corporal. When the war ended, he moved back to Missouri to continue his legal and political career.

Some of the notable things Judge Parker did during his life were securing pensions for veterans in his district and sponsoring a bill to help allow women to hold public office. He also concentrated on policies for fair treatment of the tribes that resided within “Indian Territory” – his speeches in support of the Bureau of Indian Affairs even gained national attention.

Later on in his life, he moved to Fort Smith as a Judge. During the course of 21 years, Judge Parker sentenced 160 men and women who had been found guilty of murder or other serious crimes. Of this, 79 men were executed on the gallows. Today you can visit the courthouse and gallows at the Fort Smith National Historic Site and learn about the history of the infamous “Hanging Judge” at one of the most historic things to do in Fort Smith.

Enjoy Cheap Thrills at The Park at West End

The Park at West End is a quaint downtown park that will allure you with a fantastic view from the antique Ferris Wheel that was from the 1935 World’s Fair in San Diego. It is powered by a steam engine that is over 100 years old! The park is also home to a vintage carousel that was hand-painted in Treviso, Italy that you can ride for $1 and an old rail car that has been converted into the “Nickle and Dime” Diner, and a double-decker street bus that serves concessions.

Learn About the Fort Smith Trolley Museum

In 1883 the Fort Smith Railway Company began operations with only three mule-drawn railcars. Ten years later the first electric streetcar was introduced changing transportation in Fort Smith forever!

Discover the Man Behind the Fight Against Outlaws at the Clayton House

In William H. H. Clayton’s beautiful Victorian home, now turned law museum , you’ll learn the story of his efforts to bring solitude to Western Arkansas and rid the area of criminal outlaws as Judge Parker’s prosecuting attorney. First appointed by President Grant, he eventually served under seven U.S. Presidents and was regarded as “a man of great principle and judicial skill.”

I am always looking for things to do when we visit each state. I didn’t have a lot saved for Arkansas, so this is so helpful! I would love seeing all the murals and my husband is a huge history buff, so all the historic sites would be right up our alley. Carousels are my fave; so I will definitely be taking a ride at The Park!

Arkansas is a beautiful state that often gets overlooked by many travelers! I hope you make a stop in Fort Smith when you go. It sounds like it is perfect for both you and your husband. 🙂

I love that you guys like to highlight all the little neat things there are to see in these small(er) towns. People doing road trips cross country can really get a lot of value out of your site!! I know I’ll be taking a cross-country Amtrak around this time next year, and some of those “flyover state” stops will probably be made a lot more exciting with your help. So thanks in advance! By the way, you saved the best for last… 11, 12, and 13 look like great places to grab a coffee or a meal, respectively :).

I had no idea Fort Smith was such a cool city! I love that there’s so much history there and that street art is amazing! – love all that color!

It was our first time visiting Fort Smith and we were very impressed by all there is to do! There is also some wonderful hiking at nearby Devil’s Den State Park and a few other state parks.

I loved the Unexpected Murals Project! The Mill portraits especially are amazing and not something you’d not expect from smalltown USA.

We were rather impressed by murals on the mill as well! Fort Smith is really trying to vamp up their downtown area and one way they’re succeeding with this is by hosting the Unexpected Murals Project. You’ll have to visit someday!

We are art lovers and we are opened to different types of art so we’d like to explore the murals area you suggested at the point 2. Of course, also some hours spent at The Park at West End would be great. It is very cheap 🙂

Fort Smith is perfect for inexpensive and impressive fun! If you’re an art lover the many murals here would definitely entice you. 🙂

Fort Smith looks so interesting! I can’t choose, I would love to see all of them and bring my friend that just finished her law degree. I think she would love to visit the Clayton House. I also love the street art! Just amazing.

I was raised in Fort Smith, AR and have called this place “home” for over 25 years and Logan & Kallsy have “hit the nail on the head” when it comes to Fort Smith and all the wonderful things to do an visit. I would just like to add the Janet Huckabee Nature Center and walking trails to the list as well as the future US Marshall’s Museum to be opening soon. Also, Arkansas gets hot in the summer months with a lot of humidity so I recommend visiting in the Spring, Fall or Winter if possible or early summer. There’s also great canoeing on the Buffalo River towards North West Arkansas and many other great hiking trails like Devil’s Den mentioned earlier in a comment. I have personally visited all these places as well as the ones mentioned in the article and thought they did a great job. Also, Fort Smith Coffee Co. has another store in the Downtown Bakery District that is just as cool if not better than there 1st pictured location. Of course, we have another local coffee co called Sweet Bay that has two locations and 2 Starbucks as well. I work at a local family owned Christian Bookstore, Solid Rock, which has been in business for over 46 years and have worked in three of it’s four locations. The 1st location was downtown, then off of Rogers Ave. in a Stone building which has been demolished, to a building near Aldi’s and Hide-a-Way Pizza to it’s current location off of Abby Rd & 74th St. Across from Harps, next to Sam’s & Eunice’s which is another wonderful place for home cooked meals. I love their Chicken & Dumplings special on Friday, but they are only open 10:30-3:30 M-F

Fort Smith, Arkansas , has a rich history and a great location to spend some time exploring. With a storied past, including French trappers, the Civil War, and the French Louisiana Purchase, there is much to do here. So whether you want to visit a museum, see a historic building, or enjoy the outdoors, there is something here for you.

The city has a lot to offer for locals and tourists alike. Whether you’re a weekend traveler or just passing through, Fort Smith is a place that can’t be missed. So have fun on your next trip!

The Fort Smith National Historic Site is located in downtown Fort Smith, Arkansas. It features the ruins of two forts, a jail, and a federal courthouse. These historical sites are situated on a bluff overlooking the Arkansas River and Poteau River.

During the Civil War, the city served as a supply depot for both sides. Steamboats from New Orleans and St. Louis brought supplies to the area. After the war, African Americans were allowed to vote and recruited into the US Colored Troops.

The Fort Smith Commissary was a military supply station built in the 1840s. It supplied food to the soldiers of the Indian Territory. This was the oldest standing building in Fort Smith. In the early 1900s, the Old Fort Museum Association occupied the Commissary.

The Fort Smith National Historic Site includes the Trail of Tears Overlook, which tells the story of five civilized tribes removed from their ancestral homeland in the 18th century. Located on the Arkansas River, this overlook is also an excellent place to enjoy scenic views.

The visitor center is in the former Fort Smith Barracks/Courthouse/Jail. You can find information on the site’s history, exhibits, and movie posters here. There are also walking trails along the Arkansas River.

The site was turned over to the National Park Service in 1961. Fort Smith is now a lovely park that offers a great taste of the old west. Visitors can stop by the Fort Smith Visitor Center to learn more about its history.

The Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center in Fort Smith is an excellent place to learn more about the surrounding area. This 170-acre facility boasts several fun and exciting exhibits and features. Among its many highlights is Wells Lake, which is one of the best spots to fish in the area. It’s also the perfect place to bring the kids.

Of course, the most important thing to do here is to enjoy the many fun activities. The trails and the Discovery Room are some of the best spots to explore. Located on the grounds is a 1,200-gallon aquarium containing some of the most notable species in the Arkansas River. There’s also a fun kids’ play area to occupy the little ones while you catch some rays.

The Fort Smith Museum of History is a great way to learn about the city’s history. It is located in Fort Smith, Arkansas, and is open from Tuesday to Saturday.

This museum is home to a wide variety of exhibits. From local artifacts to a timeline of the town’s history, there is no shortage of things to see. One of the highlights is a 1920s soda fountain.

Other features include a historic courthouse and jail. Visitors can also take a walking trail down to the Arkansas River. There are also displays of railroad and trolley cars, old telephone exchange equipment, and fire trucks. You can also explore an exhibit on the African American community.

The Fort Smith Trolley Museum is a non-profit organization displaying transportation history. This includes electric and steam-powered streetcars. It is located in Fort Smith, Arkansas, United States.

The museum features several exciting items, including a 1902 American Car Company streetcar and a 1966 Darby caboose. It also has three steam locomotives. You can also tour the grounds, which include the Fort Smith National Cemetery and the Courthouse. There are more than 100 volunteers who maintain the grounds and take care of the cars.

The museum offers rides in a restored Fort Smith Light & Traction 224. It costs $4 for an adult and $2 for a child. During the summer, the trolley offers 15-minute rides. In addition to the car, you can see some other passenger and freight vehicles.

Clayton House is an Italianate-style mansion located in Fort Smith, Arkansas. The home is the result of William H.H. Clayton’s renovation in the 1880s.

Built by Clayton, the house was a two-and-a-half-story wood frame structure. Its exterior was crafted with elaborate Victorian trim. The interiors have several stately parlors and a formal dining room. Each room has a fireplace for heat. During the Civil War, Clayton house served as a hospital for soldiers.

Paranormal investigators have recorded apparitions and disembodied voices in the home. They have also heard a woman wearing a brown dress and a linen shirt. These apparitions may be the wife of William or his daughter, Florence.

Some visitors to the house have reported feeling touches from a spirit, even when no one else is around. For example, one woman said her hair was tugged. In addition, visitors have reported hearing loud footsteps, music, and doors slamming.

In the past, Martha Siler has seen a woman in the study. She says she saw a woman with gray hair in a brown skirt. But, when she approached the ghost, it faded away. There are a variety of other ghosts that have been reported at Clayton House. Some of the most interesting include a tall, angry man. Other reports of a female spirit are of a woman in a brown dress.

Clayton House is also listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. With its expansive grounds and beautiful architecture, it is an ideal setting for weddings and private gatherings.

Fort Smith should have fair skies Monday for clear view of solar eclipse

Skies will be clear and sunny on Monday, April 8.

Then they will go black.

But before the much-anticipated eclipse, the forecast calls for clear skies. Even with clouds, most of Arkansas is in the path of the total solar eclipse . The southeast edge of Fort Smith is in the path.

Traffic is expected to pick up. The protective eclipse-viewing sunglasses have been free and available at the Fort Smith Public Library on Rogers Avenue this week. Supplies lasted. The library, by the way, will be closed Monday so the staff can stay home and view the eclipse.

Some school districts are closing. Alma, Midland and Paris districts will be closed Monday.

Classes will be in session in Fort Smith. The Fort Smith Public Schools will be open. Teachers are giving presentations on the natural event, and many schoolchildren will wear their protective viewing sunglasses and step outside on playgrounds about 1:45 p.m. when the moon blocks out the sun.

The Fort Smith Public Library has passed out free viewing eyewear and the Fort Smith School District’s community partnership has provided schools with sunglasses, too.

More than 100,000 people are anticipated in southeast Oklahoma and in the Arkansas River Valley. In Oklahoma, the state’s forestry service issued a wildfire warning. Conditions could be ripe for wildfires with more campers in the woods. The next total eclipse will not be for 20 years.

How many people are coming?

There were two rooms available at the Red Roof Inn on Garrison for Sunday and Monday nights a few days before the eclipse. The downtown Fort Smith area is a popular destination for tourists. It is just outside of the area considered to be in the path of the total eclipse, but at least 93% of the sunlight will be gone.

In southeast Fort Smith, with close access to Interstate 540, bookings picked up at the Homes2 Suites by Hilton at 7400 Phoenix Avenue, where an almost total eclipse should be seen out of southeast-facing windows Monday.

According to a three-year study posted on the Arkansas Department of Transportation website, the path of totality, where the sun is completely blocked out by the moon, runs just between Fort Smith and Greenwood.

And there will be about 1.5 million people visit the state of Arkansas just for the eclipse. Many locals will also be out driving to find a viewing spot.

For those driving, the advice is to resist the urge to use cellphones to take pictures and keep your eyes on the road.

Another 500,000 people who live in Arkansas are expected to drive to a place in the path of totality.

State parks are expected to be full. The study team expects similar travel patterns for this eclipse, leading to large increases in traffic volumes on ARDOT highways and the local road system.

ARDOT warns of heavy traffic congestion Monday, and drivers should expect possible backups in places.

In Fort Smith, trash service was moved to Wednesday. Residents are urged to prepare for the eclipse like any other weather event.

ARDOT encourages people to work from home if they can, and also has encouraged the trucking industry to take a holiday, according to the study posted on the ARDOT website.

Solar eclipse maps show 2024 totality path, peak times and how much of the eclipse people could see across the U.S.

A total solar eclipse  crossed North America Monday with parts of 15 U.S. states within the path of totality. Maps show  where and when astronomy fans could see the big event  as skies darkened in the middle of the day Monday, April 8.

The total eclipse first appeared along Mexico's Pacific Coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT, then traveled across a swath of the U.S., from Texas to Maine, and into Canada.

About 31.6 million people live in the path of totality , the area where the moon fully blocked out the sun , according to NASA. The path ranged between 108 and 122 miles wide. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path of totality.

The total solar eclipse started over the Pacific Ocean, and the first location in continental North America that experienced totality was Mexico's Pacific Coast, around 11:07 a.m. PDT, according to NASA. From there, the path continued into Texas, crossing more than a dozen states before the eclipse enters Canada in southern Ontario. The eclipse exited continental North America at around 5:16 p.m. NDT from Newfoundland, Canada.

The path of totality included portions of the following states:

• New Hampshire

Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan also experienced the total solar eclipse.

Several major cities across the U.S. were included in the eclipse's path of totality, while many others saw a partial eclipse. These were some of the best major cities for eclipse viewing — though the weather was a factor :

The eclipse began in the U.S. as a partial eclipse beginning at 12:06 p.m. CDT near Eagle Pass, Texas, before progressing to totality by about 1:27 p.m. CDT and then moving along its path to the northeast over the following few hours.

NASA shared times for several cities in the path of totality across the U.S. People could have also  checked their ZIP code on NASA's map  to see when the eclipse was to reach them if they were on, or near, the path of totality — or if they saw a partial eclipse instead.

How much of the eclipse did people see if they live outside the totality path?

While the April 8 eclipse covered a wide swath of the U.S., outside the path of totality observers may have spotted a partial eclipse, where the moon covers some, but not all, of the sun, according to NASA. The closer they were to the path of totality, the larger the portion of the sun that was hidden.

NASA allowed viewers to input a ZIP code and see how much of the sun was to be covered in their locations.

Could there be cloud cover be during the solar eclipse?

Some areas along the path of totality had a higher likelihood of cloud cover that could interfere with viewing the eclipse. Here is a map showing the historical trends in cloud cover this time of year.

Where did the solar eclipse reach totality for the longest?

Eclipse viewers near Torreón, Mexico, got to experience totality for the longest. Totality there lasted 4 minutes, 28 seconds, according to NASA. 

Most places along the centerline of the path of totality saw a totality duration of between 3.5 and 4 minutes, according to NASA. Some places in the U.S. came close to the maximum; Kerrville, Texas, had a totality duration of 4 minutes, 24 seconds.

What is the path of totality for the 2044 solar eclipse?

The next total solar eclipse that will be visible from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

Astronomy fans in the U.S. will have far fewer opportunities to see the 2044 eclipse they had on April 8. NASA has not yet made maps available for the 2044 eclipse but, according to The Planetary Society , the path of totality will only touch three states.

The 2024 eclipse will start in Greenland, pass over Canada and end as the sun sets in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota, according to the Planetary Society.

One of the biggest celestial events of the decade has arrived in the form of the total solar eclipse that will make its way across parts of Central and North America on Monday.

You can watch a livestream of the rare event here beginning at 12 p.m.

Dozens of cities across the Midwest, Plains and South regions will be in the path of totality, or where the sun's visibility will be completely blocked by the moon. Expect skies to darken as other phenomena take place throughout the afternoon.

What is a solar eclipse?

According to  National Geographic , a solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and Earth, creating a shadow on our planet called an umbra.

There are also different kinds of eclipses. A total eclipse occurs when the moon blocks out the entire sun and a partial eclipse occurs when the moon only blocks part of the sun.

What is a total solar eclipse? What happens during a total solar eclipse?

According to the  Indiana University official website , a total eclipse takes place when the moon passes directly between the sun and Earth, placing the Earth in its shadow. The time it takes place, as well as the duration, are influenced by factors like the distances between the sun, moon and Earth, the moon’s phase and the axial tilt of the Earth and moon.

Does it get dark during a total solar eclipse?

Yes. The closer one's location is to totality, the greater the darkness and duration. During a total solar eclipse, the moon eventually lines up perfectly between the Earth and the sun, blocking out light.
