9 places any visitor to South Africa shouldn’t miss

Our picks for the top places in South Africa – like Blyde River Canyon – will leave you lots to look at © Gunter Nuyts / Shutterstock

Any visitor to South Africa  will marvel at the country’s diversity – in its geography, its culture, its wildlife and (of course) its marvelous people.

Each of South Africa’s regions truly has its own distinct personality, offering a captivating blend of cosmopolitan cities, enthralling animals, rich history and remote wilderness. From the bustling streets of Cape Town and the wild-game viewing in Kruger National Park to the charming valleys of the Winelands, every place here enchants.

So though it was hard, we’ve selected a few of the absolute best places to visit in South Africa.

People at an outdoor cafe in Maboneng Precinct, Johannesburg, South Africa

1. Johannesburg

Best city for history and street art

South Africa’s largest city is admittedly not one of its prettiest. Johannesburg was an old mining town that has become a sprawling conurbation, with poorer neighborhoods sprinkled among wealthy suburbs. It seems a world away from Cape Town’s coastal beauty – yet spending some time in Johannesburg gives visitors valuable insight into the country’s complicated past and lively present.

Start by visiting the Apartheid Museum , see the street art in Maboneng Precinct and take a historical tour of Soweto to get a feel for Johannesburg’s heritage . Then visit Sandton City, browse Rosebank Sunday Market and spend an evening at glitzy Montecasino to see another side of the city.

Planning tip: Johannesburg isn’t walkable, and we do not recommend open-ended wandering around. Plan where you want to go, then drive directly to your destination. You can explore when you get there.

A woman running on a wooden boardwalk down toward the sea and an empty beach

Best town for beaches

A local favorite, Knysna is a coastal town along the famous Garden Route  through the Western Cape . Here, you’ll find an array of pristine beaches and idyllic lagoons – and a mix of laid-back atmosphere and stunning natural beauty that makes for an ideal  beach getaway . Spend your time on the sand, out on the water or hiking along one of the stunning forest trails.

Planning tip: Book a sunset cruise or guided kayak tour on the Knysna Lagoon to see one of the loveliest coastlines in the country.

Oryx standing in a field of flowers, Namaqualand, South Africa

3. Namaqualand

Best region for wildflowers

This arid, semi-desert region in the Northern Cape is a wonder to behold during the wildflower season. From late July to September, Namaqualand’s arid landscape transforms into a riot of color, as thousands of wildflowers carpet the region .

Aside from the flowers, you can also see the remarkable quiver trees, hike along one of the pretty trails and see the local wildlife, including caracals, leopards, springbok and tortoises.

Planning tip: Make sure you view the wildflowers on a bright, sunny day, when they will fully open.

A wine tasting partnered with a food sampling, Stellenbosch, Western Cape, South Africa

4. Stellenbosch

Best region for wine tasting

Less than an hour outside of Cape Town, in the heart Cape Winelands , you’ll find Stellenbosch , a picturesque town known for its colonial Cape Dutch architecture, student vibe and excellent vineyards. Walk the town’s quaint streets, then set off to explore the wider region by visiting wine estates nearby.

It’s easy to spend a day at a wine estate, and many offer activities for children too, making it a good trip option for the family . As well as tastings, most of the wineries also offer on-site restaurants and picnic options come meal time. If you have more time, visit nearby Paarl and Franschhoek , where you can take the “wine tram” (a one-car train) to visit the wineries in Franschhoek Valley.

Planning tip: Consider joining a guided wine tour to visit multiple wineries. This not only saves you worries about driving yourself, but gives you insider knowledge about the region's wine production.

Tugela Falls as seen from the of Sentinel Hike, Drakensburg, South Africa

5. Drakensburg

Best region for hiking

South Africa’s largest mountain range is a paradise for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. In addition to its rugged peaks, lush valleys and dramatic cliffs, the Drakensberg is also dotted with rock and cave art that dates back several thousand years.

Many hiking trails of varying lengths and difficulties beckon. One of the most popular moderate hikes is the Tugela Gorge Trail, which meanders through the gorge and along the riverbank until you reach Tugela Falls , perhaps the highest waterfall in the world.

Alternatively, experienced hikers may prefer the Amphitheater Heritage Theatre, which leads to the summit of the Drakensberg escarpment – and spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and Tugela Falls.

Planning tip: Pack suitable hiking gear, including layers and sturdy shoes, as weather conditions can change rapidly at these high altitudes.

Women roller skating through Cape Town, South Africa

6. Cape Town

Best place for a city break

Tucked between the ocean and the iconic Table Mountain , Cape Town is easily one of the most beautiful cities in the world. With the mountain dominating the urban landscape here, nature’s drama is obvious just about whenever you look outside.

After dinner and drinks at bustling  V&A waterfront , head to the top of the mountain to enjoy the views. Then explore a bit further, depending on your interests: get a taste of Cape Malay  culture (and food) in colorful Bo-Kaap , gain some insight into South African history at Robben Island or try surfing at Muizenberg Beach .

Planning tip: Schedule your visit to Table Mountain early in the day to avoid the queues and enjoy the best views before the clouds roll in.

Aerial view of Blyde Canyon, Blyde River Nature Reserve, South Africa

7. Blyde River Canyon

Best spot for panoramic views

One of the world’s largest green canyons, the Blyde River Canyon  makes a great complement to a safari in Kruger National Park. The canyon has spectacular scenery, including dramatic rock formations and impressive waterfalls, and it’s worth spending a day or two to take it all in.

Follow the Panorama Route from Graskop, stopping at Bourke’s Luck Potholes , the Three Rondavels , Pinnacle Rock and God’s Window . If you have more time, base yourself in the area for a couple of days and go white-water rafting, mountain biking or hiking through the thick forest. For the ultimate views, see the canyon from above in a hot air balloon.

Tourists on board whale watching ship taking photo of mother whale and white calf in water off the waters of Walker Bay near Hermanus, Cape Overberg, South Africa

8. Hermanus

Best town for whale watching

While this scenic seaside town is worth visiting for its beaches, nature walks and stunning scenery, Hermanus is famous for one reason: whales. From June to November, the coastal town becomes a hub for visitors hoping to see majestic southern right whales frolic in the sheltered waters of Walker Bay.

Spend the rest of your trip exploring the beaches and tidal pools and walking along the spectacular Cliff Path. Before you leave, be sure to sample some local treats at the Hermanus Markets and learn about the origins of the village at the Old Harbour Museum .

Planning tip: To maximize your chance of spotting the gentle giants, plan your whale-watching visit during peak migration season.

People in a safari jeep taking photos of an elephant in Kruger National Park, South Africa

9. Kruger National Park

Best place for safaris

For a thrilling yet accessible safari adventure , head to Kruger National Park . Home to the legendary Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo), this vast expanse of wilderness lets you see wild animals in their natural state. You can expect to spot lions drinking at a water hole, elephants strolling by with their young and giraffes clambering through the bush.

Kruger is easy to get to, whether you’re self-driving or part of an organized excursion, and you can choose to stay at a luxury lodge or camp within the park itself. Just be aware that the park is large, and you can spend a long time driving before you see your favorite animal.

Planning tip: Opt for guided game drives or bush walks with experienced rangers to maximize wildlife sightings and ensure a safe and memorable experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a corporate travel agent and a leisure tourism travel agent.

Corporate travel agents have the necessary experience and know-how to assist business travellers who require expertly streamlined itineraries when they travel on behalf of their companies. Whereas leisure travel agents are normally more focused on the things to see and do in a given destination, our team works with each company and corporate traveller to ensure that their time on the road and in the air is spent as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible.

Why does a business need a corporate travel policy?

Businesses require a corporate travel policy to ensure equal and fair treatment of all their business travellers, and to provide travelling employees with a clear mandate on how time and resources should be spent during a corporate journey. These policies also provide a blueprint for the recourse an employee has in the event of unexpected happenstances that may occur while they travel for work.

Why does it help to have a travel agent in post-Covid 19 pandemic travel?

Every country, state, and territory around the world has slight variances in their response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and the legal ramifications this holds for foreign nationals, including business travellers, can change from one day to the next. Corporate travel planners keep track of these shifting landscapes to ensure that travelling employees are in compliance every step of the way.

Will my corporate travel agent handle all travel insurance?

Our TravelManor experts are authorised to sell travel insurance on your behalf. Our team will however require input and signatures at certain junctures in the process.

What is bleisure travel?

The term 'bleisure' is a cross-cultivation between 'business and leisure'. It refers to a journey that has both business travel and leisure components. For instance, an employee who travels for work may choose to take leave days before or after the dates that they are due to be at a certain destination on behalf of their company, and use this time to explore a new and exciting destination.

This diagram shows what happens during a total solar eclipse

  • A total solar eclipse will be visible from Texas to Maine on Monday.
  • This cosmic event occurs when the Earth, sun, and moon align perfectly.
  • One diagram shows how a total solar eclipse works, and why it darkens the sky in the middle of the day.

A total solar eclipse will turn afternoon skies dark from Texas to Maine on Monday.

During the eclipse, the moon will cross between the Earth and the sun, completely blocking out the sun's light. If you're in the moon's shadow, the sky will go dark for about three to four minutes, depending on your location.

It's the climax of a cosmic dance between our planet , the moon, and the sun.

What causes a total solar eclipse

During a total solar eclipse, three key conditions happen at the same time: The moon is in the "new moon" phase; the moon crosses the plane of the Earth's orbit ; and the moon is at its closest point to Earth in its orbit.

When those conditions are just right, the Earth, sun, and moon line up. This diagram shows how that looks:

Then, if you're in the path of totality — which is basically the center of the moon's shadow, called the umbra — the moon appears to obscure the sun.

If you're in the penumbra — the outer region of the moon's shadow — you'll see a partial solar eclipse , where the moon appears to partially overlap the sun.

A total solar eclipse happens somewhere on Earth about every 18 months on average. It's rare for one to occur in any single place, though, because of the complex movements of the Earth and moon.

The moon orbits Earth every 29.5 days, while Earth has its own orbit around the sun. The moon's orbit is tilted about five degrees, which is large enough to keep its shadow off the Earth and the Earth's shadow off the moon most of the time.

There are two points — called nodes — where the moon's orbit crosses the Earth's plane. In the diagram above, the moon is lined up on a node.

Related stories

The moon aligns with the nodes and the sun about twice per year, which is how we get eclipses. A solar eclipse happens when the moon is between the Earth and sun. A lunar eclipse happens when the moon is on the other side of the Earth, farthest from the sun.

What the total solar eclipse will look like

In the path of totality on Monday, where the moon's umbra falls over Earth, the total solar eclipse will have 10 distinct phases , each with different amounts of the sun visible from the ground.

The phenomenon kicks off with what's called first contact, when the moon starts to pass across the sun. After about an hour, the moon will almost completely mask the sun, and you'll start to see a bright light radiate out of the sliver of remaining sun, known as the "diamond ring."

Then the moon will fully eclipse the sun, turning the sky dark in the middle of the day.

During totality only the sun's outermost atmosphere, called the corona, will be visible glowing around the dark disc of the moon.

After that, the moon will continue to travel across the sky to form another crescent. The eclipse ends when the moon ceases to cover the sun.

Types of solar eclipses

There are three types of solar eclipses .

Total solar eclipses, like this one, occur when the moon appears to completely cover the sun. If the moon only somewhat covers the sun, that's a partial eclipse . Many people who are near the path of totality, but not in it, on Monday will see a partial eclipse.

The third type, an annular eclipse , occurs when the moon is too far from Earth to fully block out the sun from our perspective. The outer edge of the sun remains visible as a bright ring around the moon.

A total solar eclipse is considered the most spectacular. Globally, only about a third of all solar eclipses are total.

The next total solar eclipse in the contiguous US will be in 2044.

How to watch the eclipse

If you plan to watch the eclipse, make sure you are wearing ISO-certified eclipse glasses . These are 1,000 times darker than regular sunglasses. Without them, staring at the sun could damage your eyes.

The only safe time to look at the eclipse without glasses is during totality.

Leanna Garfield and Anaele Pelisson contributed to an earlier version of this post .

WEATHER ALERT

A fire weather watch in effect for 8 regions in the area

Delta air lines posts a narrow q1 profit and says travel demand remains strong despite flight scares.

David Koenig

Associated Press

Delta Air Lines eked out a narrow first-quarter profit and said Wednesday that demand for travel is strong heading into the summer vacation season, with travelers seemingly unfazed by recent incidents in the industry that ranged from a panel blowing off a jetliner in flight to a tire falling off another plane during takeoff.

Delta reported the highest revenue for any first quarter in its history and a $37 million profit. It expects record-breaking revenue in the current quarter as well. The airline said that second-quarter earnings will likely beat Wall Street expectations.

Recommended Videos

CEO Ed Bastian said Delta's best 11 days ever for ticket sales occurred during the early weeks of 2024.

If travelers are worried about a spate of problem flights and increased scrutiny of plane maker Boeing , “I haven't seen it,” Bastian said in an interview. “I only look at my numbers. Demand is the healthiest I've ever seen.”

A slight majority of Delta's fleet of more than 950 planes are Boeing models, but in recent years it has bought primarily from Airbus , including a January order for 20 big Airbus A350s. As a result, Delta will avoid the dilemma facing rivals United Airlines and American Airlines, which can't get all the Boeing planes they ordered. United is even asking pilots to take unpaid time off in May because of a plane shortage.

“Airbus has been consistent throughout these last five years (at) meeting their delivery targets,” Bastian said.

Delta does not operate any Boeing 737 Max jets, the plane that was grounded worldwide after two fatal crashes in 2018 and 2019, and which suffered the panel blowout on an Alaska Airlines flight this year. However, the Atlanta-based airline has ordered a new, larger version of the Max that still hasn't been approved by regulators. Bastian said Delta will be happy to use the Max 10 when they arrive.

While Delta has largely dodged headaches caused by Boeing, it faces other obstacles in handling this summer's crowds.

Delta is lobbying the federal government to again allow it to operate fewer flights into the New York City area. Otherwise, Delta could lose valuable takeoff and landing slots.

The Federal Aviation Administration granted a similar request last summer and even extended it until late October . The FAA said the relief helped airlines reduce canceled flights at the region's busy three main airports by 40%.

Peter Carter, an executive vice president who oversees government affairs, said Delta and other airlines need another waiver permitting fewer flights this summer because the FAA still doesn't have enough air traffic controllers.

“Absent the waiver, I think we would have, as an industry, some real challenges in New York,” Carter said.

Airlines for America, a trade group of the major U.S. carriers, is also pushing for a waiver from rules on minimum flights in New York. The FAA said it would review the request.

Delta customers will see another change — a new system for boarding planes . Instead of boarding by groups with names such as Diamond Medallions, Delta Premium Select and Sky Priority, passengers will board in groups numbered one through eight. The airline says it will be less confusing.

“When you have a number and you're standing in line, we are all trained to know when it's our turn,” Bastian said.

The change won't alter the pecking order of when each type of customer gets to board. Those with the cheapest tickets, Basic Economy, will still board last.

Delta's first-quarter profit follows a $363 million loss a year ago, when the results were weighed down by spending on a new labor contract with pilots.

“We expect Delta to be one of the few airlines to report a profit in the March quarter,” TD Cowen analyst Helane Becker said even before Delta’s results were released.

Delta said that excluding special items, it earned 45 cents per share. Analysts were expecting 36 cents per share, according to a FactSet survey.

The airline forecast second-quarter earnings of $2.20 to $2.50 per share. The Wall Street consensus was $2.22 per share. The company stood by its forecast of full-year earnings between $6 and $7 per share.

First-quarter revenue rose 8%, to $13.75 billion. Putting Delta's Pennsylvania refinery aside, operating revenue was slightly more than analysts predicted. The airline said second-quarter revenue will be 5% to 7% higher than a year ago.

The airline reported that large corporate customers — who were slower than leisure travelers to resume flying after the coronavirus pandemic — are spending more on travel, including firms in technology and financial services.

Delta has boosted profit by focusing more on premium passengers who pay the highest fares, and raking in money from a credit-card partnership with American Express.

Costs could rise too, however. Jet fuel is higher than it was a year ago, following a run-up in oil prices, and Delta is spending more on aircraft maintenance this year.

Shares of Delta Air Lines Inc. fell 2.3% by the end of regular trading Wednesday.

Stavropol is traditionally called the “Gates of the Caucasus”, although nowadays this title is more suitable for any of the resorts in Mineralnye Vody. The old railway station of the city is a dead-end station, where the only long-distance trains from the capital come every day. For travelers it is easier to go by road. However, Stavropol is one of the most important cities in the region. Its significance is evidenced at least by the fact that, among other things, the Institute of Friendship of Peoples of the Caucasus works in the city, and the city’s main university - North Caucasian Federal University - has recently united Stavropol, North Caucasian and Pyatigorsk universities. “Stavropol” means “the city of the cross”. This name was given to the fortress built in 1777 in the centre of the Stavropol Upland, in the submountain region of the Caucasus. Stavropol is the only big city of the North Caucasus which is not located in the mountains. Interestingly, geographically it is Asia, although no Asian features can be found in this large provincial Russian city. Before the era of railways (that later left Stavropol aside from busy routes) the path of Tiflis began from here – here are the “Gates of the Caucasus”. By the way, the actual gates can be seen by your own eyes at the beginning of Stavropolsky Boulevard – Tiflis Gates, a recovered triumphal arch built in 1841. Only part of the wall remained from the Stavropol fortress, besides, one fragment was recreated. The Fortress Hill is the very heart of Stavropol. Today it is a square with various monuments, from the historical Kazan Cathedral to the extremely expressive walking cavalryman of Budyonny’s army. There are many churches, both restored old and new ones. There are also interesting buildings of Stalin era, there are semi-rustic streets, as well as good new buildings. This mixture, where it is impossible to identify one urban style, is a distinctive feature of Stavropol. Even the monument to Lenin in the company of working people is located not far from the austere angel with a cross; a cavalryman from Budyonny’s army with a rifle stays next to the head of Suvorov; the Governor-General Nikiforaki on Karla Marksa Prospect reminds of southern Russian Greeks, and the entrance to the North Caucasian University is guarded by the Egyptian pharaohs. There is a relaxed young Pushkin, a purposeful Lermontov, a very concerned Gorky, as well as classical Soviet urban statues with a special southern flair - a girl without a paddle, but with a basket of grapes. The southern flair is the brightest feature of Stavropol.
