At last this now works. 😊

After a few years of this app just showing maps with red lines on hold ups or whatever, and symbols with no worded information making the app pretty much useless.........someone has listened to the comments from users and made it a bit more like the old RAC driver assist app. Now all I have to do is press a symbol, and it tells me what the problem is so I can make a decision whether to use the road or make a detour. The only issue I have is that even though I’ve selected fingerprint to log on I’m still only given the email and password option. Please can you sort this bug out? Now the app is worthy of five stars, please don’t let some young upstart of an app developer with a “new and fresh and innovative style or idea” break it again, therefore making it useless. I don’t want to have to change my review back to one star. If anyone does try just sack them.......easy peasy, who cares!

Developer Response ,

Hi Adie, thank you for taking the time to send us the full details of the feedback you have - I will be sure to refer this onto the relevant team on your behalf. Thanks, ^Cara

Roadside assistance.

Although the roadside assistance took longer than I expected to get to me, due to extremely bad weather conditions. The stress from the waiting around for recovery soon passed when a young man from the R .A .C. called Kyle arrived. After he had finished getting wet through doing his job, Kyle, who probably just wanted to get dry .Instead he took the time to chat with me and explained the problem and what to do about the problem. Once he was happy that I was happy, Kyle was on his way to his next job. An absolute asset to the Company this lad. 10/10 for Kyle, worth his weight in gold, polite and professional.
Hi, we are really pleased to hear that you received a great service from Kyle. We’d love to make the thanks official for him. Could you please send a copy of this review, including your membership, full address with postcode and contact details to our team at [email protected]. Thanks, ^Cara
No problem with the RAC itself, RAC has always sorted me out when needed and no complaints about their service, always good ….. but this app just seems to take me into an endless “please login to …. (Whatever)” loop. Checking out the features it seems to take you to an RAC webpage to report an incident? In the past I subscribed to another U.K. roadside assistance service (the acronym begins with an A and ends with an A) that has an exploitative pricing model (the RAC seems much more straightforward and fair on pricing and I highly recommend the RAC versus the A … A provider re pricing), but the app for the A …. A was more helpful. My advice is to stay with the RAC but to give them a ring on your phone if you break down: there will be a very helpful person on the end of the line and they’ll be with you promptly. Added: very helpful response from developer, below, thank you for noting this and responding, most impressed.
Hi Prof Timm, I am sorry to read you are having issues with the MyRAC app. Could you please send this over to our team at [email protected] along with your membership number, the device you are using and the version of iOS it is running so we can look into this further. Thank you, Cara

Traveling with Multiple Destinations is Easy with RAC Route Planner

If you have more than one destination and are unfamiliar with the place, we recommend using a route planner. It will help you not only find the safest destination but avoid traffic delays, roadworks, and traffic issues. RAC Route Planner offers an effective routing tool plan for multi-stop trips.

With so many route planners online, why is RAC unique? It prioritizes safety over getting to your destination quickly. It alerts users to problematic weather conditions and accidents that can potentially impact your route. RAC’s mapping service can help you to find hotels, and calculate your fuel cost, which is important for long trips.

Limitations in Using RAC Route Planner

Road safety with rac route planner.

As one of the safety advocates while on the road, use the RAC Route planner wisely. Don’t get distracted by frequently looking at your mobile device while driving and make sure that it is visible and hands-free.

RAC Route Planner discourages adjusting the route while driving. If you need to, you need to park on the side of the road and make the necessary adjustments.

The route finder services offered by RAC are meant to help motorists like you. If you have any questions, visit the contact page on its website.

Best online route planners 2022

Which web-based journey planner makes the most sense.

Best online route finders - header image

With the summer holidays fast approaching, the number of British drivers hitting the road to travel to family, friends and beach resorts is only set to increase – and this means an inevitable rise in traffic and congestion.

One way to avoid being stuck in nose-to-tail hold-ups is to use a route planner ahead of time, so you can see where traffic hotspots might be, plot any lunchtime stop-offs, and even plan for any electric-vehicle charging needs.

Best sat-nav apps

Over the years, in the era of built-in sat-navs and smartphones, these pre-journey web planners have become less important. However, many providers have pivoted their model to allow you to plan in advance and then transfer to an integrated companion app. This is in addition to calculating journey times based not only on live traffic, but also on what the traffic is likely to be based on your chosen departure time.

For those travelling to remote parts where signal might be at a premium, the ability to print off hard copies of turn-by-turn instructions still has its uses, too.

We put eight route planners – all of them free to use – to the test, to see which one you should load up before your next road trip.

How we tested them

We put the eight route finders to the test with a journey from the Auto Express headquarters in central London, out through north-western suburbs, to the home of UK motoring: the British Motor Museum in Warwickshire.

This allowed us to test city, A-road and motorway route planning, with each planner graded for accuracy, live traffic alerts and route options.

Also taken into consideration during the test was the ability to print out turn-by-turn directions, how easy the planner was to link to an app and any other useful extra features offered.

Previous test winner Google Maps comes out on top again because it really does do everything you need, and in an easy and intuitive way. Waze and Bing Maps join it on the podium, and are great alternatives if you prefer the user interface.

Google Maps

Best online route finders - Google Maps

  • Website: maps.google.co.uk
  • Rating: 5 stars

Google Maps has long been our favourite route finder, doing everything simply, quickly and easily. This is the fifth time that we’ve awarded it top spot in this test, and for good reason.

Searching is easy, and the planner has a wealth of options for fine-tuning your trip including live traffic, predicted traffic and app sharing. A bonus is the ability to switch between satellite imagery and a traditional map, as well as using Street View.

Of course, it’s embedded with the full power of Google, so you can find landmarks and other useful locations on your route extremely easily. It’s hard to see how it won’t always be the best of the bunch.

Best online route finders - Waze

  • Website: waze.com/livemap
  • Rating: 4.5 stars

Once the new kid on the block, Waze is now well established as a super route planner. Last time we ran this test, we were pleased to see the web-based journey planner had been updated to fall in line with the quality of the app, making use of the community-based traffic data. Journeys are accurate and timings based on live data.

The website is fully integrated with the award-winning app, with intuitive buttons to let you transfer your journey to a smartphone. We were also impressed by the ability to schedule a journey with a desired arrival time, and Waze will prompt you when it’s time to set off based on traffic at that moment.

Best online route finders - Bing Maps

  • Website: bing.com/maps

Microsoft’s version of Google is not far off our winner. Place searching and nav are intuitive, and you can easily add rest stops. Traffic is colour coded, and there’s a clear way to print. One frustration is that there’s no obvious way to share your planning with an app – a shame in a connected world.

Not seen elsewhere is live Highways England traffic-camera feeds, showing flow at that location – really useful in bad-traffic areas.

Best online route finders - Here WeGo

  • Website: wego.here.com
  • Rating: 4 stars

Here’s a top company that provides software for car makers’ own sat-navs, and its WeGo route finder is impressive. It looks more advanced than Bing or Google, but is actually a bit less intuitive. That said, all the core functionality is there, although whether it’s accounting for live traffic isn’t all that clear. It is easy to transfer a planned route to the HERE app or print directions.

TomTom MyDrive

Best online route finders - TomTom MyDrive

  • Website: mydrive.tomtom.com

This online route finder started life as a companion site for those who owned a TomTom sat-nav, but now it’s transitioned to work just as well for those without. Functionality matches its rivals’, too.

A unique feature is the Thrill option, to give a more scenic route based on how hilly or winding you want it to be. We also like the motorcycle-friendly route option. If you own a TomTom, you can share your progress directly to your device, too, or just with your smartphone to turn it into a sat-nav.

Via Michelin

Best online route finders - Via Michelin

  • Website: viamichelin.co.uk/web/routes
  • Rating: 3.5 stars

A bright spot here is a function to calculate the cost of a journey and then generate an expense receipt. The planning functionality is solid, with accurate routes and the option to take current traffic into account.

Yet while the options to tailor your journey are quite extensive, it’s a shame most are hidden behind complex and cluttered filters. You can print directions easily, but again there’s no option to share with an app.

AA Route Planner

Best online route finders - AA Route Planner

  • Website: theaa.com/route-planner
  • Rating: 3 stars

The AA is better known for breakdown cover than route planning. Its online offering falls behind some of the tech-based firms’, with a slightly outdated site and functionality. But the basics are all there and you can use the AA’s library of live traffic alerts to tailor your journey to avoid jams.

However, it’s quite clunky to use and the adverts make it messy – especially when compared to the simplicity of our top-ranked sites. While you can print directions, there’s no way to share with a paired app.

View AA Route Planner

RAC Route Planner

Best online route finders - RAC Route Planner

  • Website: rac.co.uk/route-planner

As with the AA, the core function of getting from A to B is there, with accurate routes, yet the user interface is not as smooth as our winner’s. Location look-up could be a lot better and there’s no way to use predicted traffic for future departures. Again, printing directions is easy, but there’s no app. Importantly, the RAC offers the option to calculate how much the trip will cost in fuel.

The RAC Route Finder & Journey Planner

If you are travelling to one or more unknown places, it is strongly recommended to use a route planner . Therefore, you will not only find the safest route to your destination, you will also be informed of any traffic jams, delays and road works along the way.

This allows you to update and change your plans en route and ensure that you avoid unsafe situations. The RAC Route Planner is the perfect tool to help you travel from door to door. By using this route planner you will be able to get on the road without any problems.

How was the RAC Route Planner developed?

The RAC ( RAC Limited ) is the English version of the Dutch ANWB or American Triple A. It is an organization that has been involved in helping motorists and other road users for more than a hundred years. A few years ago, the RAC route planner was developed that previously only offered routes in the United Kingdom.

This travel planner can now also be used in other European countries such as France, Germany, Belgium and our own country. The RAC route planner can calculate routes for traveling by car or on foot.

How does the RAC Route Planner work?

Like other popular route planners available on the market, the RAC Route Planner offers users the possibility to plan a route from A to B via C. This route planner can be used on the desktop and as an app on a mobile phone. By simply entering all the places you want to go to, you will be presented with a number of routes. Once you’ve chosen the route, you can hit the road without worrying about taking a wrong lane or exit along the way.

This way you have much less chance of being on the road longer than necessary. In addition, you will be informed of unexpected problems on your route such as road closures, congestion and construction work. If you regularly drive to the same places, you can save those routes to use them again at a later time.

Cons of the RAC Route Planner

This RAC journey planner can only show you the route you are driving. Unfortunately, further information to make your trip even more comfortable is not available. So you can’t see what the parking options are there. The only parking facilities that this route planner can show are those that are available at airports.

Also, you can’t search for gas stations or other amenities along the way that you might need during your trip. Because the RAC route planner is controlled from England, it is possible that any delays due to traffic jams or road works only become visible later than normal.

If you are looking for a similar and free route finder, we highly recommend trying the AA Route Planner .

Be wary while using your RAC Route Planner

What we mean by this is that you should use your route planner wisely while on the road. Do not let yourself be distracted too much while driving and make sure that your phone or tablet with the route is clearly visible. Also avoid creating dangerous situations by adjusting the route while you are driving, rather do this while you are parked somewhere. After all, the RAC route planner is not there to make things less safe for you.

Most popular route planner

Google Maps has become such a major player in the field of free trip planners, route planning software and route maps that many other apps use Google’s technology as the basis for their own ‘mapping’ software.

With many groundbreaking features, such as Street View, Google Maps is a true powerhouse and an invaluable resource for millions of people around the world.

RAC reveals best and worst times to travel this Easter weekend

The rac estimates up to 17 million trips will be made by car for leisure purposes over the bank holiday, article bookmarked.

The RAC has revealed the worst times to travel over the Easter weekend with motorists warned there will be more than twice as much traffic on the roads as usual.

As the UK prepares for the four-day weekend, the motoring group estimates up to 17 million trips will be made by car for leisure purposes over the bank holiday .

Good Friday (7 April) and Easter Sunday (9 April) are expected to be the busiest on the roads.

That’s when the largest number of journeys will likely be made, causing long delays and traffic queues, especially in the south and west of the country.

Research from the RAC with transport analytics experts Inrix suggests that Friday may not be so good for anyone travelling by road, with around 2.7 million getaway trips expected to be taken.

  • Easter supermarket opening times: When are Tesco, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s open?
  • Dover delays – live: Queues build and traffic snarls as ferry port braces for Easter travel chaos

Major roads through the southwest of England and the Home Counties of Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire are expected to see some of the worst delays.

The A303 westbound in Wiltshire, which takes drivers right passed Stonehenge, the M5 south between Bristol and Bridgewater and the M25 anticlockwise between Hertfordshire and Surrey, will see more than double the usual amount of traffic, according to predictions.

Vehicle speeds could drop to as low as 12mph despite all three being main roads.

Easter Sunday is expected to be just as busy, with 2.7 million journeys made, while Saturday and Monday are only predicted to be marginally quieter, with 2.3 million journeys.

Some Britons will be waiting to see what the weather has in store for the long weekend before deciding when to take a trip out – so there could be up to 7 million more trips staggered across the weekend.

Roads will be even busier because of planned closures on the railways, including the closure of London Euston station for the entirety of the bank holiday.

But National Highways is temporarily halting and clearing around 1,400 miles of roadworks from Thursday to help manage traffic on the roads.

The RAC urged drivers to make sure their vehicles are road-ready if they do plan to travel – as a single breakdown can cause a standstill traffic jam.

Separate research from the RAC found that just one in five drivers check their cars on a regular basis, but 30 per cent said they never check.

RAC Breakdown spokesman Rod Dennis said: “With many people keen to make the most of the double bank holiday this Easter weekend, we’re expecting the customary jams across parts of the road network to make this Good Friday a bad Friday for drivers, especially those who are planning on covering longer distances. Traffic volumes could be even higher if the sun chooses to make a welcome appearance.

“The south and west of the UK are the areas to watch as they’re home to some vital roads responsible for carrying vast numbers of people to the holiday destinations of the West Country – so our advice to anyone heading that way is to get on the road as early as possible on Good Friday, or travel on a different day entirely.

“No one wants a breakdown to get in the way of enjoying a well-earned break, so it’s a good idea to check tyres have plenty of tread and are properly inflated, and that oil, coolant and screenwash are all at the right levels under the bonnet. Following this advice can significantly reduce the chances of breaking down.

  • For a small French town, this 15,000-egg Easter omelette is a 50-year tradition
  • The best wine deals for April 2023: Bargain bottles to sip and save on

INRIX transportation analyst Bob Pishue said: “We expect a large jump in holiday driving with most congestion occurring on major roads around urban areas and popular destinations.

“Nationwide, we anticipate travel times during the holiday weekend to increase about 25% compared to normal. Knowing when and where congestion will build can help drivers avoid the stress of sitting in traffic.”
