How To Spend 5 Days In Rhodes: The Ultimate Itinerary

5 days in rhodes

A crowning jewel in the aquamarine Aegean, and the largest of the Dodecanese islands, Rhodes is a quintessentially Greek destination with a storied past. Popular with holidaymakers thanks to its southern climes and peaceful beaches, this unassuming isle also offers a fascinating medieval history to uncover.

Many regard the island as your typical fly-and-flop destination, spending seven sun-soaked days here on a package deal or simply bypassing it altogether. Despite this, Rhodes makes an incredible addition to any island hopping tour of Greece , or as a standalone destination in its own right. From ancient relics and temples to historic thermal springs and an incredible natural phenomenon that draws clouds of butterflies, there’s something for every type of traveler.

With so much to see and do, it’s worth spending more than a couple of days discovering Rhodes. We’ve put together this detailed 5-day itinerary to help you see the highlights, and still have time for the beach.

Table of Contents

What is the best location to stay in Rhodes ?

An aerial view of a whitewashed town in Rhodes.

Before we dive right in, it’s worth highlighting the best location to stay in Rhodes to get the most out of this 5-day itinerary. At 1,401km2, Rhodes is the fourth largest island in Greece – and many sorely underestimate its size and scale. This means the location of your accommodation is paramount.

Ideally, you will spend your first three days in Rhodes Town, followed by the final two nights at one of the resorts further south. In the city, you have the option of staying in the historic Old Town, where you will find a selection of boutique hotels and accommodation. The newer area of the city offers lower prices and more choices, from sprawling hotels to self-catering apartment lets.

Check out the highly rated Spirit of the Nights Boutique Hotel , famed for its refreshing plunge pool offering a welcome oasis from the bustling streets of the Old Town. Alternatively, Aquamare City & Beach hotel is ideally placed right by the sea and offers modern rooms and free parking at a reasonable price point.

For the second half of this itinerary, there are several options. Lindos is a bustling town attracting visitors of all ages thanks to its mind-boggling Acropolis. It has a range of nightlife, amenities, and accommodation of all levels. Lindos Blue Sky is a charming aparthotel with a communal pool, mere moments from the incredible Acropolis. Meanwhile, Haraki (or Charaki) is a more laid-back locale featuring authentic tavernas and a wonderful sweep of golden sand. Haraki Endless Blue Luxury Apartments have a gorgeous island-inspired interior design and are very reasonably priced.

Staying at either resort will place you within easy access to the attractions featured on days four and five of this itinerary. As with many Greek islands, public transport is patchy, so we recommend hiring a car to best experience this itinerary. If you do hire a car, be sure to double-check that any accommodation you book provides parking.

Day One: Hit the Beach

Looking out over Elli beach in Rhodes

Relax after a long plane or ferry ride by spending your first day or afternoon at the beach. There’s nothing quite like soaking up those first few rays of Grecian sun to the sound of the sea lapping the shore, and snapping a few pictures to make those at home feel jealous!

You can either make use of Elli Beach, which is right in Rhodes Town and offers plentiful loungers, bars, and crystal clear water , or you can travel further afield. Anthony Quinn Bay is a 20-minute drive from the city but is renowned for being the most beautiful cove on the island, with turquoise waters surrounded by lush emerald greenery.

If you’re looking for a little luxury after a long journey, Kallithea Springs is just 7km from the center of town and features stunning Italian architecture thanks to its history as a thermal bath. There is a small entrance fee of around €5, which is worth it for the chic sunbeds, bar, and café, as well as the unique beauty of the bay and surrounding buildings. There is a bus every 30 minutes to take you to the springs from the center of Rhodes if you have chosen not to hire a car.

Day Two: Explore Rhodes Town

Street of the Knights in Rhodes Old town

It’s time to slap on a hat and some comfortable walking shoes and dig into the fascinating history of Rhodes . The island is thought to have been inhabited since prehistoric times, with occupation from the Byzantines, Ottomans, and later, Italians, leading to a colorful blend of culture and design.

As the oldest Medieval Old Town in Europe, Rhodes’ historic walled center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and attraction in its own right. Start your day by wandering its cobbled streets and stopping off for a traditional  Ellinikos Kafes  (Greek coffee) along the way. You’ll be able to enjoy a mosaic of fascinating architecture, from Byzantine churches and Turkish mosques to traditional medieval fountains and beautiful oriental frescoes.

The Street of the Knights connects the port to the Acropolis of Rhodes and is well worth a wander for its emblems and inscriptions. After this, head to the Palace of the Grand Master, a fairy-tale castle dating back to the 14th century, to learn a little more about the city’s fascinating history. The entrance is just €6. If your feet aren’t too tired, be sure to pop into the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes for priceless artifacts and exhibits.

Day Three: Experience Symi Island

A view of Yialos harbor in Symi Island

Located a short ferry ride from Rhodes is the alluring Symi Island, which makes for an unmissable day trip. On arrival, you’ll be greeted by a tumble of sorbet-colored neoclassical mansions in shades of lemon, peach, raspberry, and mango. You can either take a ferry or catamaran from Rhodes Town or sign up for an organized tour. The ferry takes 1hr and 30 minutes, while the catamaran takes just 50 minutes.

You’ll alight your boat at the harbor, Yialos, where you can rent a scooter if you are interested in exploring the further reaches of the island. Alternatively, start your day by climbing the 500 steps up to the hilltop village of Chlorio, for panoramic views. The best vistas can be found a further 10 minutes up from the main square, where you’ll also find a charming white-washed church.

You can then choose to spend the remainder of your day relaxing at idyllic beaches such as Nanou or Agia Marina, which has its own small island with a monastery. Agia Marina can be reached on foot from Yialos, although sturdy hiking shoes are required, and Nanou can be reached by waterbus. Alternatively, make a pilgrimage to Panormitis Monastery on the south side of the island, which was renovated in the 18th century and features breathtaking frescoes.

Day Four: Visit Tsambika Monastery

The view from the Tsambika Monastery

On day four you can leave your accommodation in Rhodes town to head for the south of the island. If you have a car, you can easily visit Tsambika Monastery en route to your new accommodation. If not, you can either take a public bus from Rhodes to Lindos (1hr 45 mins) or Charaki (1hr 20mins) and then take a taxi back to the monastery. It is a 30-minute drive from Lindos and just 15 minutes from Haraki.

The monastery is built on a beautiful hill overlooking the bay with views extending all the way to Lindos. As the legend goes, women struggling to conceive should walk barefoot up the hill to pray to the Virgin of fertility at the church. However, we recommended sturdy walking shoes, as it is some 350 steps to the top!

If your legs aren’t too tired from the climb, the afternoon could be spent checking out the nearby Valley of the Butterflies, which is a unique nature reserve packed with enchanting waterfalls, ponds, bridges, and of course, a kaleidoscope of butterflies. A natural forest of  zitia  (sweetgum) trees release a special substance that attracts migrating moths and other species. Go at the end of the wet season (May) to see these colorful creatures at their most abundant.

Day Five: Admire the Acropolis of Lindos

The amazing Acropolis of Lindos

For many, the Acropolis of Lindos is the most extraordinary archaeological wonder of Rhodes, which is why we like to save it for the final day. This monumental temple complex rises from a steep cliff and features reliefs from around 280 BC. It is walkable from most accommodation in Lindos and a short 15-minute drive from Haraki.

Check out the Byzantine Chapel of John, explore the incredible Hellenistic Stoa, and find out about the deity Athena, as well as the various cults who worshipped her. Meanwhile, the site’s lower level provides medieval interest with the 14th-century Castle of the Knights of St. John.

There is so much to discover here you may want to spend all day, but in case you get too hot or tired, the cool, clear waters of St. Paul’s Bay are close at hand. This stunning beach resembles a heart when viewed from the Acropolis, and is therefore very popular for weddings. It is a 10-15 minute walk downhill from the center of Lindos.

A pretty town in Rhodes.

How much money do I need for 5 days in Rhodes?

The average daily cost of expenses in Rhodes is €100, not including accommodation. This means you will need at least €500 spending money for a 5-day itinerary. This should cover food at local restaurants, travel expenses, tips, and admission to sights and activities. You might spend more if you want to visit more upscale restaurants or go out to a few bars in the evenings.

The average cost of accommodation is around €100 a night for a double room, bringing the total cost of a holiday to about €750 per person if you are traveling in a couple and more if you are traveling solo. There are not too many hostels on the island although it’s not impossible to find a bed in a dormitory in order to keep costs down. There is plenty of choices when it comes to apartment rentals in Rhodes, which can also help you save on dining.

What is the best time to visit Rhodes Greece?

Rhodes has a typical Mediterranean climate, meaning the best time to visit is during summer when the weather is hot and dry . May, June, and September are the ideal months to see the island without throngs of other tourists, with weather that’s warm enough to sunbathe but not too hot to see the sights.

Meanwhile, winters are mild and bring more showers , but might be an option if you plan to spend more time exploring the cultural side of Rhodes and aren’t too bothered about visiting the beach. The hottest month is July, while the wettest and coldest month is January. August is the most expensive and crowded time, so may be best avoided if you can.

How many days are enough for Rhodes?

Five days is the perfect amount of time to see all the cultural highlights of Rhodes and still have a little time to hit the beach. Remember that the island is quite large and it would take you around five hours to drive around the whole thing. Five days offers enough time for a relaxing experience, where traveling to each new attraction is not overly rushed.

9. The Great Hammam

Another important building worth the visit is Rhodes’ Great Hammam, also known as the Baths of Suleiman. The building is believed to date back to the fourteenth century, probably in 1558, when the Ottoman Turks occupied most of the islands in the Dodecanese. This is one of the several Turkish Baths that remain scattered around the Medieval Town of Rhodes.

The building is an impressive structure with stunning red-tiled cupolas, featuring a section devoted to the men’s baths and a more modern area for women added years later. Once inside, you will be surprised by the rich decorations, including marble floors, elegant fountains, and numerous domes.

The renovated building is a hammam spa that offers visitors relaxing body and natural beauty treatments .

11. Rhodes Museums

Greece Travel Blog_Rhodes Island Guide_Museum of Bees & Honey

There are a handful of fascinating museums on the island for those interested in digging into the area’s history.

Archaeological Museum Of Rhodes

To learn more about the island’s history, the best thing to do once you’ve explored the main archaeological sites is to devote a couple of hours to the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes in the Old Town.

One of the reasons for the visit is the setting. The museum is set in the former Hospital of the Kings, one of the most important Medieval buildings on the island, with a gorgeous interior courtyard and well-preserved stone walls and columns.

The museum’s exhibits include a collection from Hellenistic to Early Christian times. Objects include vases, figurines, mosaic floors, and funerary slabs of the Knights.

Jewish Museum

Witness the different cultures and communities that have, since ancient times, been part of the society of Rhodes at the Jewish Museum of Rhodes. During the Second World War, the local Jewish community was devastated and followed the same sad fate as many other Jewish communities that populated the most important Greek Islands . You can visit the museum in the Old Town Synagogue Kahal Shalom.

The exhibits include ceremonial dresses and religious objects, old marriage contracts, theological books, and a curious Turkish travel document from 1910. It is a manuscript by the Sultan that permits a young local boy to leave the island with his family.

Rhodes Toy Museum

A fantastic exhibition that attracts kids and parents, the Rhodes Toy Museum is close to the village of Archipoli. It is known for its collection of toys, all made in Greece and built between 1930 and 1990.

An area in the museum is entirely devoted to Lego and Playmobil, while there are also interactive toys and handicrafts. Rhodes on a budget: Cheap and free things to do

Discovering Rhodes on a budget isn't as difficult as you might have thought. Yes, holidaymakers flock to the glorious Greek island to indulge in its mild climate, history, culture, stunning scenery, beautiful beaches and fantastic food, making it one of Europe's most popular holiday destinations. However, although this pushes prices up in some areas, there's plenty to see and do either for free or on the cheap.

Beach at Lindos, Rhodes, Greece

Getting around

Although hiring a car is handy if you want to explore the centre of the island, the buses are cheap, air-conditioned and run regularly from Lindos to Rhodes via Kolymbia and Faliraki. More adventurous travellers can also hire a moped to explore what Rhodes has to offer that way.

Cuisine in Rhodes

Food is fresh and delicious, especially local cheeses and wine, plus the infamous Greek salad and variety of fish. Prices are slightly higher in touristy areas, but you can easily haggle over the set menu and bag yourself a bargain, or seek out more secluded cafes and restaurants away from busier hubs.

Take a walk around Old Rhodes

As one of the most impressive and historically-rich medieval centres in Europe, the old town of Rhodes retains a truly magical feel. It's easy to get lost in the twisty roads within the city walls and picture besieged knights inside the turreted Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights as they prepared for battle.

The old town of Rhodes

Back in our time, you'll find countless stalls run by chatty islanders filling the streets, selling anything and everything, just don't forget to haggle. Enjoy lunch in one of the tavernas before making your way to the statue of Colossus at the harbour, the supposed site of one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Anyone looking to cool off after so much walking can head to the nearby Elli Beach, which is picturesque but can get quite crowded during peak seasons.

Climb to the acropolis at Lindos

Situated around a hill, the town of Lindos perfectly combines the old with the new, as the stunning acropolis, whose origins date back to 300BC, looks down on the hustle and bustle of the more modern town steeped in ancient ruins.

The partly restored Temple of Athena on the Acropolis

Wander the winding lanes, take in the views from the top or relax on the sandy beach that lies at the foot of the town. If you head off up the slopes to the acropolis, remember to take some water with you as it's quite a climb; if you're feeling lazy, take a Lindos taxi - aka a donkey - to the top and gaze over the Aegean Sea.

The churches in the town are also worth seeing, particularly the Greek Orthodox Church of St Peter with its painted murals, but make sure you cover up with one of the provided shawls. With plenty of cafes and bars in the town and by the beach, you could easily spend a whole day here, and buses run regularly from the old town of Rhodes.

Relax on Kolymbia Beach

Located between Lindos and Rhodes, Kolymbia is ideal for families. Much quieter than nearby Faliraki Kolymbia has plenty of hotels for all budgets, and the main street has bars, restaurants and shops run by some of the friendliest people on the island.

Kolymbia Beach, Rhodes

Many of the tavernas are family-run, offering local cuisine and great service. Be prepared to chat as they love to practise their English, but take it steady with the local spirits they give you - strong stuff!

Although small compared to some of the beaches on the island, Kolymbia Beach is a quiet calm area that's ideal for swimming, while the smooth rocks above offer the chance for a pleasant walk.

Splash about in Faliraki

Not the place to stay if you're looking for a quiet holiday, Faliraki is the party town of the island. During the day the it's fairly sleepy, so it's worth a visit and there's a three-mile stretch of sandy beaches, perfect for swimming or relaxing.

Falariki Water Park, Rhodes, Greece

Faliraki also has the largest waterpark in Europe, which isn't exactly cheap, but a super day out for adults and children alike with Twisters, Black Holes and Kamikazes, plus plenty of child-friendly slides.

At night, the town wakes up as the bars and clubs open and the music blares, although there are some quieter places for those who just want to chill out and have a couple of drinks.

Whatever you're looking for on your holiday, it is possible to do Rhodes on a budget thanks to its variety of things to do and spectacular selection of natural beauty spots. rhodes daily travel budget

Greece remains a mysterious and enticing place for avid explorers. Would-be Greek philosophers may ask questions about the meaning of life, why we’re here, and what is love? But the real question when visiting Rhodes is should I spend 3, 4 or 5 days in Rhodes? Of course, this depends on how you want to build your Rhodes itinerary – but don’t worry, we’ve got all the best tips and top sights to see below!

Table of Contents

How Many Days in Rhodes?

When planning your trip, you will definitely wonder how many days to spend in Rhodes. Many visitors simply stop for the day on a cruise ship to see the UNESCO World Heritage Site — Rhodes Town — but this barely scratches the surface of this enigmatic island.

Rhodes is also a destination for package holidays – many visitors spend a week poolside at resorts, never getting out to explore the island.

To see the island at its best, fully exploring its multitude of villages and incredible beaches, I recommend at least 5 days on the island.

But don’t worry, if you only have 4 days in Rhodes, you’ll still be able to manage a beach day as well as exploring Rhodes town and other highlights.

You would struggle to do the island justice if you were spending 3 days in Rhodes. You’ll see how beautiful the island is, and will be dying to come back and explore it a little more in-depth.

Lindos Bay on Rhodes

Getting To & Around Rhodes

You’ll be pleased to hear that Rhodes is easy to get to and the island is well-linked to the rest of Greece and Europe.

Many European airlines serve Rhodes International Airport and there are connections from Athens and many other Greek islands along with many major European cities. Many of these flights are seasonal and operate during the summer season of April to October.

The airport is a 30-minute drive from Rhodes Town. Expect to pay €25 in a taxi, or opt for the public bus for €3 which will double the journey time to around an hour. You can also organise a private transfer here.

Rhodes is an excellent place to start an island-hopping adventure of the Dodecanese islands. The port is located a stone’s throw from the city walls. You can book ferries here.

The easiest way to get around Rhodes is to rent a car – the island is large (though not as large when compared to Crete ) and you’ll spend a long time on the bus. You can browse car rental options here.

If you’re spending the majority of your time in Rhodes Town, you’ll be able to go car-free. You can also take organised trips including this full-day tour to Lindos Town or this catamaran cruise.

Windmills at the Mandraki Port

3, 4 to 5-Day Rhodes Itinerary

Rhodes, the jewel of the Dodecanese, offers so many exciting things to do, whether you love history, beaches, nature or eating – this diverse island has it all!

Day 1 – Rhodes Town Highlights

You could easily spend a day ambling around Rhodes old town. Make sure not to miss seeing the major sights, and wander amongst the minarets, medieval buildings and clock towers. You can book an old town walking tour here.

The best time to get out with a camera is early in the morning before day trippers arrive, or in the evening as the cruise ships leave.

Our Lady of the Castle

This beautiful church started life as a frescoed Byzantine church, before being converted into a European Catholic gothic church. The Ottomans converted it into a mosque, and many of the frescoes were lost in the process. Few remain, but they are beautiful and incredibly evocative.

The Street of the Knights

The most beautiful street in the old town is the Street of the Knights – it looks more or less exactly as it would have 500 years ago. The streets are cobbled and flags still fly above the lodges to the different nationalities of the Knights of Rhodes.

The Street of the Knights

The Palace of the Grand Master

Undoubtedly the most famous sight on any tour of medieval Rhodes is the Grand Master’s Palace. It’s been a citadel since the 7th century, and eventually became the administrative centre of the old town under the rule of The Knights of St John in the 14th century. It served as the residence of the Grand Master of the knights.

Damaged by the Ottomans, and rebuilt by the Italians in the 1930’s it is now one of the best examples of medieval architecture in Greece. This imposing fortress makes for great photos from the outside, and is an atmospheric museum inside. You can pre-book tickets here.

Palace of the Grandmaster

Archaeological Museum of Rhodes

Featuring everything you’d expect from an island with such a rich history – delve into 2000-plus years of Greek, Byzantine, Crusader and Ottoman history. Whilst the museum is fascinating, the building itself is as much of an attraction – it’s the old hospital for the Knights of St John.

And if you want to see some ruins that are still standing, you could also opt to visit the Acropolis of Rhodes, which is also located in Rhodes Town.

Day 2 – Dig deeper in Rhodes Town

For the second day of your Rhodes Itinerary, we’ll be spending a little more time around the interesting hub of the town of Rhodes.

Explore the backstreets

The Medieval town of Rhodes is a UNESCO site, and whilst it is very heavily visited – most visitors only see around 10% of the old city, the main thoroughfares and monuments that you explored on day one.

Pull the curtain back and get yourself lost in the winding alleys and streets in the southern part of the old town to see how life is for the town’s permanent residents.

Church of Saint Phanourios

Step back in time to the 13th century and visit this tiny atmospheric church. It’s still in use to this day, and you can see the faint medieval frescos, alongside more modern Orthodox imagery.

Walk the Medieval Moat

One of my favourite things to do in Rhodes is walking the medieval moat. It’s a great way to get some respite from the crowds and the midday heat!

Now a green park, offering shade and incredible views of the medieval walls, it gives you a sense of the size of the city, and how imposing it must have been for visitors in days gone by.

The Medieval Moat and City Walls

Mandraki Harbour

In antiquity, visitors arriving by boat passed under the legs of the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, before entering the harbour. The Colossus fell in the 7th century CE, but the harbour remains prosperous. Now it’s full of sailboats, restaurants and traditional windmills – a great place to grab a glass of wine and watch the world go by.

Savvas Sandals

Open since the 1950s, this third-generation shop is the last traditional sandal maker on the island. They’ll measure your feet, choose a style, and handcraft your sandals with ethically sourced leather.

This is one souvenir that really gives back to the local community in the right way – and one you will treasure for many years to come.

Day 3 – Enjoy Rhodes’ Beaches

If you’re only spending 3 days on Rhodes Island, then it’s important that we at least get a day at the beach. Rhodes receives the most days of sunshine for any area in Greece – more than 300 days! Below we’ve listed some great beaches for you to explore – you can also take a day cruise to visit some of them.

The closest beach to Rhodes town, you can reach Elli Beach in a matter of minutes from the old town. Elli is a well-established organised beach – it’s a pebbly beach with plenty of sections to lay out a towel, with an offshore platform with diving boards that you can swim out to.

There are also more organised beach clubs along the beach, and the excellent Ronda Beach Club is the best of these!

Anthony Quinn Bay

When actor Anthony Quinn was filming “The Guns of Navarone” in Rhodes, he immediately fell in love with this tiny beautiful cove. Featuring a small beach, sharp rocks and impeccably clear water, it’s easy to see what Quinn loved.

Be aware the narrow nature of the beach means it gets very busy in the summer months, so plan on arriving very early, or mingling in with the crowds!

Anthony Quinn Bay

Traganou Beach

This pebbly beach has clear deep waters, and beautiful caves to explore. There’s an easy-going taverna, affordable sunbeds and offers an overall relaxed vibe.

Tsambika Beach

A sandy bay with crystalline blue waters, Tsambika Beach is arguably the most beautiful beach on the entire island of Rhodes.

Located near the village of Kolympia, Tsambika takes its name from the monastery overlooking the beach. Famed for helping struggling couples conceive, the walk up to the monastery is not for the faint-hearted but will reward you with breathtaking views over the Aegean.

Tsambika Beach

Day 4 – Explore Lindos Village

Next to the medieval Old Town, the whitewashed village of Lindos is the most visited destination on the island. If you’re spending four days on the island you have to visit this part of the island! You can organise a day trip here if you don’t have your own transport.

One of the top tourist destinations in the Dodecanese, when you first lay eyes on Lindos, it’s easy to understand why. This sugarcube-esque village is amongst the oldest in Greece, first mentioned in Homer’s ‘The Iliad’.

Wandering between the houses, shops and cafes is a delight – but you’ll want to get there early; the midday heat can be incapacitating, and the cruise ship crowds will usually arrive around 11am.

If you want to relax, you can also go for a swim at Lindos Beach – the perfect place to beat the heat!

The Acropolis of Lindos

Another reason to get to Lindos early is to be the first person through the ancient door that marks the entrance to the Acropolis of Lindos. At a height of around 160m above sea level, the many steps to the Acropolis can be testing – bring good shoes and water, and take your time.

Once at the top, you’ll find steps built by the Knights of St John, beautiful sculptures of ancient warships, the ruins of an Orthodox church, and the remains of the Temple of Athena Lindia. But besides these historical wonders, the real reward is the incredible view of St Paul’s Bay, the island of Rhodes and the Aegean Sea.

Lindos Acropolis

St Paul’s Bay

Follow your nose down to the beautiful rocky bay that nearly encloses St Paul’s Bay. On the way stop to admire the 4th century BCE ancient theatre.

One of the more expensive beaches in Rhodes, it’s very popular for weddings and photoshoots. It’s also well worth going for a dip in the sea to cool off from the midday heat.

Day 5 – Canyons, Caves, Beaches & More!

It’s your final day in paradise! There are so many things in Rhodes that we still haven’t mentioned, so I’ll try and give you a rundown of them here – one could even think five days isn’t enough for your trip to Rhodes!

Jacob’s Canyon

This beautiful and rugged canyon is a fairly challenging walk through the stony passageways of the west of the island. It can get very hot, and there are scrambles through the two to three-hour hike, but it is quite the adventure.

Cave of Archangel Michael Panormitis

Just outside of the main town of Rhodes, on a path between the Akti Kanari and Kato Petres beaches you’ll find quite an unusual sight. Look for the blue cross and follow the path to discover a cave full overflowing with icons of the Archangel Michael.

Kalithea Springs

A beautiful mashup of history, architecture and nature – Kalithea Springs is well worth stopping by. This beautiful bay is rumoured to have ancient healing properties, and the area is encompassed in an impressive art-deco complex, built during the Italian occupation.

Kallithea Springs

Valley of the Butterflies

Deep inland, you can find this 600-acre nature park. Best visited at the end of the wet season, this valley is well organised, has walking paths and is littered with gum trees which attract thousands of mating butterflies every year. It is a true spectacle of nature, one of the most beautiful places to visit in Rhodes and is well worth the small entry fee.

Symi Island

If you don’t want to visit the above places on the island itself, consider heading out on a day trip from Rhodes to one of my favourite places on Earth. The quaint, colourful island of Symi is a short ferry ride from Rhodes. You can also organise a boat cruise here.

The island’s capital, Ano Symi, is as relaxed as it gets, built in terraces around a gorgeous crystal clear harbour. The island is famous for sponge diving and is a great place for fresh seafood.

Quick Links

The land of breathtaking seascapes and rich history, Greece is surely a travel destination that many avid travelers dream of. Many look forward to doing interesting and unique things, such as visiting the medieval Meteora known for its Eastern Orthodox monasteries . While newly married couples opt to escape to one of its many spectacular honeymoon destinations. But what about budget travelers?

When it comes to traveling budget, Greece might not be on the top of the list since it can be expensive to travel and stay here. Skip the upscale regions and rather choose an off-the-radar destination like Rhodes Island, where one will get to explore the authentic side of Greece. One does not really need wads of cash to enjoy this spearhead-shaped island which has been serving as a strategic location for ancient civilizations in the past. Rhodes Island was the epicenter for the crusaders coming from all over Europe. During the medieval age (1309), it was here where the Knights of Saint John claimed their headquarters. From the ancient remnants of its old town to its quaint castles tucked in the hills, this place is a real treat to the eyes. Of course, holidays without Greek beaches are always incomplete, so expect to find many unspoiled beaches with turquoise blue waters around. Ready to visit Rhodes on a budget? Then check out these beautiful places.

For a free but rich historical tour in Rhodes Island, simply saunter the 0.3-mile-long old street of Odós Ippotón, as most called it the Knight’s Street, and get back to the medieval time, where the Knights of the Order of St. John settled and occupied the island for about two centuries. Take a tour of cobblestone street, which acts as an open museum to discover medieval-Gothic architecture. Marvel at the intricate facades of the Grand Master’s Palace or the 15th-century Knights’ Hospital of St. John. Take a tour of the interior of these buildings and discover many antique objects such as mirrors, furniture, and pots.

The Mandraki Harbor has become a popular place among tourists who come here to take some amazing pictures of the gorgeous mills with the azure sea in the backdrop, and the good news is that it doesn’t cost a dim to enjoy this attraction. The harbor is a special place to visit for many reasons. Firstly, many believe that it was home to one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, where the 33-meter-high Colossus of Rhodes used to stand here until it was destroyed in an earthquake around 226 BC. Another interesting account is that the harbor used to have about 14 mills, which were utilized by the locals to grind grains. Unfortunately, today there are only three of them left. Visitors can also dine at one of the seafood restaurants and enjoy the sweeping view of the blue sea, the towering mills, and the white yachts.

Perched beautifully on a hill right at the western coast of Rhodes Island, the 15th-century old Kritinia Castle overlooks the glistening blue sea. Many visitors come here to enjoy the fantastic view of the rolling hills peppered with pine trees and olive groves, but also for the historical architecture of the castle, which was designed by Giorgio Orsini. The prime reason for building this castle was to protect the then inhabitants from an Ottoman invasion. In addition, visitors will get to enjoy the whitewashed village of Kritinia kitted out with authentic tavernas offering some mouth-watering seafood dishes such as Shrimp Saganaki. This is the best way to experience the friendly hospitality of the locals and the serene setting of the area.

Another way to enjoy the sheer beauty of Rhodes Island for free is by hiking the majestic Mount Profitis Elias, a 2,618 ft mountain to soak up the fresh air and warm sunshine. Many hikers choose to start this eco-adventure at the quaint village of Salakos, located on the northwestern coast of the island. This tranquil village is ideal for those looking for a more rustic and authentic side of Greece. Since the hiking trail has gained a lot of attention, there are many convenient, well-connected bus routes to access the village. Wear a pair of comfortable hiking shoes and set for the two to four hours of hiking trail which starts at the village square. Take the rugged pathway and follow the red marks along the hiking trail. On the way, hikers will find a shrine, and from there, the terrain gets a little steep, so the hike might just be a little strenuous. Don’t forget to pause and visit the historic St Michael’s Chapel along the way. At the summit, take in the picturesque view of the gorgeous Aegean Sea and the Turkish coastline.

  • Highest Point: 2,618 ft
  • Trailhead: Salakos Village
  • Duration: 2 to 4 Hours

The great thing about visiting the southern part of Rhodes is the fact that there are many unspoiled beaches to choose from. Whether one is planning to relax on the sun-soaked beaches or enjoy an exciting windsurfing session, Rhodes has many great spots for these activities. Some long stretches of beaches include Kiotaru, Gennadi, and Plimmyri. Surfers can visit Prasonisi beach to enjoy the wind and waves.

The Greek island of Rhodes is part of the southeastern Aegean Sea and belongs to the Dodecanese group of Greek islands. It is the largest island in this group (about 1,400 square kilometers).

The island is quite close to the coast of Turkey, about 18 kilometers, while it’s about 363 kilometers from Athens. The capital of the island is Rhodes Town, it’s on the northern tip of the island and it has two main areas to explore, the Morden town and the historic old town also known as the Medieval City of Rhodes.

The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as it is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe. Rhodes was an important center of the ancient Greek civilization while, in later years, it was ruled by various empires and civilizations, including the Knights of St. John, the Ottoman Empire, and Italy.

Each of these civilizations left a mark still visible in the island’s architecture, cultural heritage, cuisine, and archaeological sites.

Rhodes is also home to important archaeological sites, some of them quite easy to visit on a day trip. Among the most important ones are the Acropolis of Rhodes and the Acropolis of Lindos.

The island’s cuisine is rich and varied featuring all the ingredients that characterize the Mediterranean diet as well as strong influences from Middle Eastern cuisine. Pomegranates are particularly associated with the island and you can even book a pottery masterclass to make your own pomegranate!

Last but not least, Rhodes is known for the Dama Dama deer, a protected species that can only be found on the island of Rhodes.

Fallow deer with growing antlers

Although the best time to visit the island largely depends on your preferences, those seeking unforgettable beach adventures will prefer to spend the summer in Rhodes, from June to early September.

If you want to combine visits to the beach with long hikes and mountain walks, September and October might be milder and offer more pleasant temperatures.

The months leading to summer (from April to early June) are also excellent for outdoor sports and adventures, although the sea might be still too cool for long swims.

Winters are not as cold as in the rest of Europe. The island features mild temperatures and the main towns still offer some accommodation options for those who visit between November and March.

Since Rhodes is one of the several big islands in Greece, many hotels, shops, restaurants, amenities, and attractions are still active in winter while some shops, museums, and sites might operate with reduced hours. During this period, prices are also more affordable.

If you’re interested in the island’s history, and cultural events, or simply want to enjoy a peaceful getaway, winter can be a good time to visit Rhodes.

The ruins of Temple of Athena Polias at the Filerimos Rhodes Greece Europe

Since the island is a popular summer destination for many Europeans, you will find more than one popular way to get to Rhodes.

By Plane: Diagoras International (RHO) is the island’s airport and it’s well-connected to major cities in Greece and several European destinations. You can fly directly to Rhodes from Athens or take a direct flight from various European cities. The route Athens-Rhodes is about an hour.

By Ferry: Traveling by sea in Greece is one of the most traditional ways to visit the islands, Rhodes is connected to the Greek mainland and other islands via regular ferry services.

The main ports on the mainland with connections to Rhodes are Piraeus (Athens) and Rafina. Travel times depend on routes and types of ferries, while an average trip from Piraeus to Rhodes can last from 12 to 15 hours.

From Rhodes, it’s possible to visit other Dodecanese islands via ferry, including Patmos, Kos, Symi, Kastellorizo, and Kalymnos. If you have extra time, consider booking this Symi Full-Day Yacht Cruise with Meal & Drinks or this trip to Alimia (an uninhabited island).

Symi Island

Most areas on the island can be easily reached by public transport (buses and taxis).  The bus service is operated by KTEL, and you can find bus schedules and routes at bus stations or online.

Buses are an affordable option to discover the most popular landmarks in Rhodes. You can even book a hop-on-hop-off bus tour like this one to maximise your sightseeing abilities.

Car or motorbike rental remains the most popular and most efficient way to explore the island on your own.  Check car rental comparisons in advance here.

Be aware that, since most visitors tend to prefer this option, during peak seasons, booking your car rental in advance is the best solution to secure the type of vehicle you prefer.

Rhodes Old Town

The island is famous for its great selection of beaches, pristine waters, endless water sports opportunities, and coastal settlements.

Among the beaches we suggest checking out during a trip to Rhodes are Tsambika Beach, Faliraki, Lindos Beach, and Anthony Quinn’s Bay. Agios Pavlos beach is yet another sandry stretch which will take your breath away.

Three Days in Rhodes: Top Things to Do

Let’s now see what are the best things you can do in Rhodes in three days…

It’s a good idea to start your first day on the island by visiting the gorgeous Medieval Town of Rhodes, a UNESCO World Heritage site that houses one of the most beautiful and best-preserved castles in Europe, the magnificent Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes.

Inside the palace, you can marvel at the medieval museum or simply enjoy the incredible architecture of the building.  Purchase your Palace of the Grand Master ticket here in advance.

Palace of the Grand Master

Once you’ve seen the palace, enjoy a stroll through the narrow streets of the Old Town, paying special attention to the spectacular Street of the Knights. If you’re looking to get around in a unique way, then you might consider booking a Segway tour of Rhodes town.

street of the Knights

Once you’ve checked out this picturesque area, it’s time to visit the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes if you are looking to learn something about the history of the island. Over here, you’ll find artifacts from ancient Rhodes, including statues, pottery, and jewelry.

Archaeological Museum of Rhodes

Another highlight of Rhodes medieval old town which will simply take your breath away is the Panagia tou Bourgou, which is known as Virgin Mary of the Burgh or Lady of the Castle in English.

The ecclesiastical building dates back to the 14th-century and is the oldest still standing church on the island. This isn’t a museum per se, is free to visit, and is simply a space where you can wander around and soak up the historic ambiance.

Panagia tou Bourgou

Head to the Harbor of Mandraki for a delicious lunch by the sea. Check out the enchanting main port of Rhodes and pay a visit to the iconic deer statues that flank the entrance to the harbor. Later on, head to Faliraki for an afternoon at the beach.

Golden sunrise in Mandraki harbour

Faliraki is relatively easy to reach from Mandraki by car, taxi, or public bus. Besides, the place is perfect if you want to spend the afternoon at one of the many sandy beaches. For instance, the main beach allows you to take a dip in the crystal-clear waters or rent a sunbed.

More of an active type? No problem, there will be plenty of adventurous activities in Faliraki, including jet skiing, parasailing, or banana boat rides.

If you’re traveling with children, Faliraki Water Park offers a wide range of water slides, pools, and attractions suitable for all ages. It’s considered one of Europe’s most important water parks, thus guaranteeing endless hours of wet fun.

Romantic couples looking for a quiet place to witness their first sunset in Rhodes should take a short boat ride from Faliraki to Anthony Quinn Bay to enjoy the emerald green waters and lush vegetation surrounding the beach.

The environment is laid-back while it also offers the ideal setting for endless hours of sunbathing, swimming, or snorkeling.

In the evening, explore the town of Faliraki on foot. Enjoy the several shops, stop at a coffee house, and grab a traditional sweet with a cup of coffee. In the evening, pick among the many seaside taverns for a traditional seafood meal. Another option is to book a sunset cruise like this one.

Devote the whole second day in Rhodes to Lindos, one of the most scenic settlements on the island.

Reach the Acropolis of Lindos early in the morning to avoid the hottest hours of the day as well as to beat the crowds. Purchase your Ancient Lindos Acropolis Regular Admission Ticket here in advance.

The ancient Acropolis of Lindos is one of the most iconic archaeological sites in Rhodes, located on top of a hill. Over here, you can check out an imposing ancient theater, as well as the famous Temple of Athena Lindia.

If you want to learn more, join an organized tour led by an official guide, this way, you will get the chance to ask as many questions as you want and discover every secret about the history of the island.

From this point, the views of the coast are simply spectacular. Once you’ve seen the ruins, explore the charming whitewashed streets of Lindos town, with its traditional architecture made of stone houses with colorful windows.

Near the village’s main square, the Church of the Panagia is a beautiful Byzantine Church with impressive frescoes that you shouldn’t miss.

End the morning grabbing a few mementos from Lindos. The area offers great opportunities for souvenir-hunting since many shops sell local handicrafts and other typical souvenirs.

Climb down to the coastal area of Lindos for a seaside lunch on St. Paul’s Bay, a stunning natural harbor just a short walk from the village. Devote the rest of the afternoon to the beach.

On this bay, you will encounter a sandy shore with crystal-clear waters, peaceful enough to relax, swim, or enjoy a good read under an umbrella.

One more beach you can check out in the area is Pallas Beach, also within walking distance from Lindos village, the turquoise, shallow waters are perfect for a tranquil afternoon by the sea.

As soon as the sunset hour draws near, head back up to Lindos Acropolis or pick one of the many restaurants with views over the sea. The views from u the hill are nothing short of stunning.

Acropolis of Lindos

For an alternative last day in Rhodes, visiting the coastal town of Kallithea might be just what you need before going back home to your routine.

The island’s southern coast is famous for its spectacular beaches, but also for the unique Butterfly Valley. If you haven’t rented a car for your trip, then you might consider booking this Guided tour of Lindos, Rhodes City, and Kallithea.

 Valley of the Butterflies

Also known as Petaloudes, this is an interesting natural reserve close to Kallithea that, during the end of summer, receives thousands of butterflies in search of the shaded paths and trees in the valley.

Head to the elegant Kallithea Springs to enjoy its therapeutic waters, discover the landscaped gardens and learn about the history of the springs.

Springs of Kallithea

Reach the beach for a casual lunch and spend some time on this picturesque pebble beach surrounded by cliffs and lush greenery.

If you prefer a more active afternoon, check out one of the many beach clubs with lavish facilities along the coast of Kallithea featuring amenities such as super comfy lounges, beachside bars and restaurants, music, and endless cocktails.

If beach clubs don’t cut it for you, you might want to try jet skiing or parasailing, while the sunset is better enjoyed from the deck of one of the beach bars or restaurants while sipping a refreshing drink before dinner.

When staying in Rhodes for a short time (3 to 5 days), it’s better to choose a central location, close to the attractions and beaches you intend to visit.

These are some of the most convenient places to stay in Rhodes for a short break on the island:

  • Rhodes Town: It’s always a good idea to stay in the capital to have access to more amenities and public transport. The old town offers easy access to historical sites, restaurants, shops, and nightlife. Suggested hotel: Rhodos Horizon City
  • Faliraki: Another popular place to stay in Rhodes is Faliraki, a coastal settlement on the eastern area of the island with popular sandy beaches, entertainment, and dozens of hotels for all budgets. Suggested hotel: Kouros Exclusive Hotel & Suites
  • Lindos: If you’re looking for a quiet place to stay on the island, then head to Lindos. Located on the eastern shores of Rhodes, Lindos has the quintessential atmospheric vibe of Greek-whitewashed villages. Lindos offers a variety of accommodations, from luxury hotels to cozy guesthouses. Suggested hotel: Lindos Blue Sky
  • Lalyssos: The ideal destination for those who intend to enjoy water sports in Rhodes, this area is located on the western coast of the island, not far from the center of the old town. The place has plenty of beachfront resorts with beautiful while the atmosphere is tranquil and relaxed. Suggested hotel: Nathalie Hotel

If you have more time

Unfortunately, three days isn’t really enough time to see everything that Rhodes has to offer. As such, here is a non-exhaustive list of other attractions that the Greek island has to enjoy if you find yourself with a week in Rhodes…

Monastery of Filerimos

Those who are fans of all things history will soon fall in love with Rhodes thanks to its myriad of well-preserved ancient sites. Ancient Kamiros is all that remains of the first city state on the island of Rhodes, a settlement dating back to the late Bronze Age.

Today you can visit the ancient site, though you’ll want to plan to visit during the morning or late afternoon as the site is quite exposed to the sun. The entrance fee is under €10, making it a great budget activity on the island.

Ancient Kamiros

One of the more spectacular views in Rhodes can be found in the form of Monolithos Castle, which are all that remains of a once fortified castle, dating back to the 15th-century. The walk up from the closest car park isn’t too far, but be prepared for some steep steps and go prepared with suitable shoes.

View from ruins of a church in Monolithos castle

Impossibly beautiful, the Seven Springs is named for its seven springs and is the perfect spot to visit if you want to cool down during a particularly hot day.

Free to visit, you don’t need more than an hour or two to explore, and while it’s at the top of every travel guide for Rhodes, it most certainly isn’t the top attraction on the island and so you should really only add it to your Rhodes itinerary if you’ve seen everything else there is to enjoy.

Epta piges park at Rhodes island

Best seen at Golden Hour when the fortified walls transform into a golden hue, the ruins of kritinia are all that are left of a 1472 castle built by the Knights of St. John. Free to visit and explore, on a clear day, you can see as far as Turkey from the top!

Castle of Kritinia

The Holy Monastery of the Virgin Mary is probably most visited thanks to its unparalleled sea views. However, you should note that to visit the viewing platform next to the church, you’ll have to ascend 300+ steps and so it’s best to avoid visiting during the middle of the day!

Kato Monastery Tsambika

If you love nature, then you’ll want to check out Rodini Park, which many claim is the first landscaped garden in the world. There is not a huge deal of things to do, though it is a great place to visit on a particularly hot day.

Rodini Park

If you love museums, then you should be sure to check out the Modern Greek Art Museum, which is located close to the Aquarium of Rhodes on the northeast tip of the island. You have to pay for entrance and there aren’t a huge number of displays, but it’s a great spot to check out for an hour or two.

Municipal Museum of Modern Greek Art

I have read forums and websites.. but its difficult to judge as all these forums are from 2013 and older. I am mostly a backpacker style traveller, and not interested in shopping or spending unnessesarily.

Lastly, I have now received my Russian Tourist visa, is it true i must register with the authorities once I enter the country?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks in Advance!

Hi Jess! If you are staying in a hotel/ hostel/camping, etc. they register you on arrival and give you a notification paper. If you are staying for less than 7 days at your friends, for example (not in the hotel, etc.), you don't have to register; you only need to do this if duration of your stay is more than 7 days.

Transport fees in Moscow: http://engl.mosmetro.ru/pages/page_0.php?id_page=8

Here is Moscow Metro map and useful information: http://engl.mosmetro.ru/pages/page_0.php?id_page=8http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moscow_Metro#/media/File:Moscow_metro_map_en_sb.svg

It's better to buy a card for several rides (10 or 20) or a 3 days smart card, 1 and 2 ride tickets are most expensive. You can use this tickets in metro and other public transport (buses, trolleybuses, trams). There are very interesting routes, for example trolleybus #5 (from VDNKh to Luzhniki Stadium, passing many sights in the center), #1 (riding along Tverskaya str., passing Kremlin and other famous sites) or tram 39 (from Chistye Prudy metro st. to Universitet), you can use them instead of touristic sightseeing buses:)

Daily budget (without accomadation) in my opinion is from 1500 to 3000 rubles a day.

If you have more specific questions you can write to my personal mail-box here. I'm a budget traveller too and would like to help other budget travellers in my city:)

Ticket prices for the Trans-Siberian Railway also depend on the current ruble exchange rate.

Is the Trans-Siberian Railway expensive?

Before starting on your Trans-Siberian Railway adventure you naturally want to know what the entire trip will cost. Although this sounds like a simple question, it is pretty difficult to answer. The Trans-Siberian Railway price of travel depends on the following factors:

  • Which travel class do I want to use? The price for a first class ticket is about three times the price of a 3rd class ticket
  • Am I willing to buy the tickets myself and assume responsibility for the organisation of the trip?
  • How many stopovers do I want to make? The more breaks, the higher the total price.
  • What sort of accommodation do I want? Will it be a luxury hotel or will a hostel dormitory be sufficient?
  • What tours and excursions would I like to go on?
  • What is the current exchange rate for rubles?

Basically, everything from a luxury to a budget holiday is available. If you buy yourself a 3rd Class nonstop ticket at the counter, a few hundred Euros will cover the price. All you will experience is a week on the Trans-Siberian train and will see nothing of the cities on the way. There is, however, any amount of room for upward expansion. Everyone makes different choices about which aspects they are willing to spend money on. I personally prefer to save money on accommodation and railcar class, visit as many cities and do as many trips as possible. To enable better classification of your travel expenses I have contrasted two typical traveler types. In the third column you can calculate the total cost of your own journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that these are only rough estimations and not exact prices.

The all-in costs seem fairly high at first. However, they cover everything and it is quite a long journey taking four weeks. Many people forget to consider that when looking at the list. We should also deduct the running costs for food and leisure at home. I think most visitors to this page will classify themselves somewhere between the two categories, that is around the € 2,000 – € 2,500 range. When comparing these prices with other travel packages, you get the impression that it is hardly worthwhile travelling individually on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that most packages last no more than 14 days and you are herded like cattle through the most beautiful locations.

If you spend less time on the Trans-Siberian Railway you will, of course, pay less. I chose this particular travel length because I prefer not to do things by halves. If you fulfill your dream of travelling on the Trans-Siberian Railway, enjoy it and don’t rush things. But it’s up to you, of course. Try playing around with the form a bit to find the appropriate price for your trip.

This is how you visit Bangkok on a budget

Bangkok has an enduring allure to global visitors that never seems to get old or go out of style – it continues to fight for its spot on lists of the world's most visited cities.

From hallowed monasteries to all-night techno clubs, street noodles to Michelin-starred tasting menus, and lush public parks to gritty urban train loops, Thailand's capital will leave you dizzy with options and a never-ending list of reasons to return.

That admirable versatility creates an extreme range of costs, reflecting differing income levels and social strata amongst both locals and international visitors. The City of Angels can be a gift to budget travelers if you know where to cut corners but costs can quickly spiral if you go off script. Here are all the insider tips you need to ensure your trip to Bangkok doesn't break the bank.

Daily Costs in Bangkok

  • Hostel dorm bed: 250-400B
  • Basic room for two: 800-1500B
  • Self-catering apartment (including Airbnb): 800-2500B
  • MRT subway ticket: 15-40B
  • City bus: 8-25B
  • Canal boat: 8-20B
  • Motorcycle taxi: 15-100B
  • Car taxi: 45-200B
  • Coffee: 30-120B
  • Local Thai dinner of four dishes for two: 350-500B
  • Bottle of domestic beer in a shop: 41-55B
  • Bottle of domestic/imported beer at a bar or restaurant: 150-250B/200-270B
  • Glass of wine in a bar or restaurant: 150-300B

Average daily cost: 1800-2800B

Time your visit well

For maximum savings, avoid travel during peak season if at all possible. High season in Bangkok extends from mid-November to early March, when hotels, hostels and guesthouses enjoy high occupancy and charge full rates. It gets even more expensive the week before Christmas through the week after New Year's – some accommodation providers add temporary surcharges of 25 to 35 percent to their peak season rates.

Room rates tend to run significantly lower at other times of the year, with the best deals typically offered in June, July, September and October. Find out more about big events in Bangkok and what you can expect each season in our insider guide to the best times to visit .

Choose local budget airlines

Two airlines based in Thailand – Nok Air and Thai AirAsia – almost always offer lower domestic fares than those posted by national carrier Thai Airways and boutique-marketed Bangkok Airways. It also pays to travel lightly – eligible carry-ons can be taken aboard for free, while checked luggage costs 300B and up for 15kg (Thai AirAsia) or 20 kg (Nok Air). If you can't resist traveling without your home comforts, book your checked baggage in advance to save cash. Start planning early to nab the cheapest fares and choose off-season bargains to save big and stretch your budget.

Opt for a cold beer over cocktails

Wine and spirits, whether imported or produced in Thailand, are subject to high taxes – as much as 400% for imported wine. Just one bottle of wine can double or triple your restaurant tab – a night out in Bangkok that focuses on cocktails and cabernet can often cost the same as one in a European or US city. Beer, which is subject to a much lower tax rate, will bring your restaurant and bar bills down to more affordable levels.

Domestic beers such as Singha, Chang and Leo cost about 30-40% less than imported beers. International brands that are brewed in Thailand under license, such as Heineken San Miguel and Tiger, are priced in between domestic and imported beers. Thai craft beers, including such well-known brands as Chalawan, Chatri and Busaba, aren’t actually brewed in Thailand but in neighboring countries Cambodia and Vietnam, as well as in Australia; they tend to be priced similarly to imported beers.

Eat like a local

The dining scene in Bangkok has exploded over the last decade. Enterprising chefs from all over the world, along with practically every global culinary franchise, have moved in with a vengeance. At last count the city boasted 30 Michelin-starred chefs, elevating Bangkok to world-class levels for fine dining. Although these tasty delights are wonderful for a big occasional blowout, they're not a nightly option for those visiting on a budget.

Luckily, Bangkok is known for its incredible street food culture and the streets are where you'll find the best bargains. It’s also where you’ll find the most authentically Thai and Thai-Chinese cuisine, arguably representing the real heart and soul of the city. Bangkok street food includes not only umbrella-shaded carts parked at the edge of the road or on footpaths but also one-room eateries in modest shophouses throughout the city.

You'll find the pick of such culinary gems in Talat Noi, Chinatown, Suan Phlu, Phra Nakhon and Banglamphu and also in lesser numbers sprinkled about every precinct of the city. Multiple-course, family-style meals are very affordable; for tighter budgets, stick to one-plate dishes where rice is included in the order.

Embrace public transport

Taxi fares are relatively low compared to many other major global cities, but they can still eat up your daily budget quickly. The BTS Skytrain and MRT subway lines are much better budget options than taxis and you won't waste time sitting in traffic jams. The networks are quite extensive and you can reach just about any corner of the city using one or the other.

Travel cards are available for both modes of transport, but there are no discounts available and you’ll have to pay a deposit for the card. For short visits, it’s better to buy separate tickets at the station. MRT offers a 50% discount for seniors (over 60 years of age) for all fares, and you don’t have to be a Thai citizen to take advantage of the discount – just show your passport at the ticket window. A 50% discount is also available on MRT for children who are under 120cm (3.9ft) tall and aged under 14. BTS doesn’t offer senior or child fares for foreigners.

City bus fares are even cheaper than rail or subway fares, but the huge network (with over 500 separate routes) is complicated and the buses tend to be slow and relatively uncomfortable. Canal boat lines are similarly cheap but much easier to figure out. Boats run frequently in daylight hours along Khlong Saen Saep across the city from west to east, and they’re especially useful for passengers visiting attractions along the lengthy Sukhumvit Road. Hop on a motorcycle taxi from the canal jetties to get there quickly.

The Chao Phraya River Express line operates passenger boats up and down the Chao Phraya River, stopping at piers on both sides along the way for fares of between 14 to 33B. There's also a Chao Phraya Tourist Boat hop-on-hop-off service that departs every 30 minutes from 11 piers between Sathorn Pier and Phra Arthit Pier. A ticket costs 150B and includes unlimited stops along the route for one day, running from Sathorn to Phra Arthit between 9am and 7:15pm and from Phra Arthit to Sathorn between 8am and 6:30pm.

Stay outside the tourist hub

Generally speaking, restaurants and accommodations along or near Sukhumvit Rd from Soi 1 and as far east as Soi 65 tend to be more expensive than elsewhere in the city. The concentration of bars, nightclubs, restaurants, speakeasies, and massage shops in this district is significantly higher here than in any other area in Bangkok but you'll pay for the privilege.

Go beyond the tourist hub to find bargains in Talat Noi, Chinatown and Phra Nakhon (sometimes referred to as Old Town), three contiguous neighborhoods extending from Charoen Krung Rd parallel to the Chao Phraya River and then north to the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew. Amidst the most historic buildings and temples in the city, there are dozens of budget hostels and guesthouses, along with small eateries and street vendors offering some of the best and most authentic Thai and Chinese cooking in the city. All for less than half the price you'd pay around Sukhumvit Rd.

The districts around Sathon and Silom Rds are a little more expensive than their Old Town neighbors but tend to be more colorful, culturally engaging and affordable than the Sukhumvit area. Towards the north end of the city, the Ari neighborhood is similarly mid-level when it comes to budget but has a more authentic Thai community vibe.

Save on sightseeing with a GetYourGuide City Card

GetYourGuide City Cards offer an all-inclusive pass good for 30+ attractions for two to five days, starting from 4500B. The card includes walking and bike tours, river cruises, cooking classes, massages, pub crawls, and a few museum entries, but not temple entry fees. Make a shortlist of your must-visit highlights to ensure you get maximum bang for your baht before booking. Why not start with our favorite 17 things to do in Bangkok ?
