What a fun weekend we had! Booked this for the financé's birthday and we had a blast. The choice of breweries were great and the recommendations for after the tour were pretty awesome too! There were complementarity water and snacks during the tour (provided by the tour). Kelly was our tour guide and she was pretty cool and patient with the drunkies. I would definitely do this again!

This outfit does a solid job of presenting the local Richmond breweries! These guys are true advocates of the Richmond beer scene and a great community asset.

The concept is amazing; their delivery: leaves much to be desired. Upon arriving 3 mins before their 4:15pm start time, we walked into the downstairs of Capital to see the rest of the tour folks taking a drink of the 2nd beer sample. I politely ask the tour guide, "What beers were sampled today?" His response was a look of confusion, and he didn't know the beers that were sampled. Better yet, we were not even offered the samples. Strike 1. Everything seemed a little disorganized and that was made evident when the owner, not giving the tour this past Saturday, asks "Who hasn't purchased tickets yet?" We were immediately looked at and given the look, you're not going on the tour because you walked in last; regardless of the fact that we purchased our tickets over a month beforehand. Evidently, the company could not count the number of people on their own tour list to see that we had 2 people too many. A couple that was there on their anniversary date were asked/told they would not be going and they would be given an extra two tickets. Strike 2. Upon getting on the bus and rolling over to Legends the group we were with was a solid group. We were all joking and having a good time. At Legends everything was a little chaotic and not organized at all (definitely not a shock after our start). It was nothing beyond the standard Legend flight, that was poured and half the time the tour guide pouring didn't know what was in the pitcher (Pale or IPA, he did not know). Really? Also, we were told nothing about the beers that were being poured, were given no tour or description how they brew there, nothing. Strike 3. Next up was Midnight Brewery. We arrive and find out there is some beer festival going on; interesting. We get inside and the guide has no idea what is going on. 5-10 mins later he walks around and hands us all a $5 beer coupon and says, "They are not doing samples due to the event." Ok. So my group and myself proceed up to the pouring area and talk to the bartender. Super nice and points out that most of the small brewery owners were there hanging out. So, the bartender knows more than our guide, awesome! We get introduced to the owner and was ask him to give us a tour. He was very welcoming and then introduced us to Neil Burton, the founder of Strangeways (where we were heading next). A huge thumbs ups for Midnight! Tour company: strike 4. We get to Strangeways and everything was. . . . unorganized/chaotic. Surprised? Me either. They give us a few samples to taste, and were nice. We again, heard nothing about their brewing process, did not see the brewing room, nothing. The beer was tasty, no question. Strike 5. This tour needs a major overhaul for it to be worth it. At $65 a ticket, this was one of the biggest wastes of $130 we had spent on a night out ever. I'm not one to bash a company, but for the 3 places we went (I'm not counting Capital since we didn't get any samples there) we could have gone and asked for a tour, had a few samples and spent half what we did.

Thank you for taking part in Richmond Brewery Tours and the helpful feedback you provided on Yelp. I'm glad you agree the concept is amazing and most all our past participants would agree. I sincerely apologize you took part in what was by far the perfect storm of the least desirable tour we've ever conducted and I take full responsibility for your experience. To provide some background, our company is in its infancy and approaching 5 months in operation. We are constantly working to refine our product and services offered. For example we launched an online booking system for our customers a few weeks before your online purchase. A new system I blame my user error on the overbooking which occurred on your tour. (First and last time it will happen). Your tour guide was a new employee conducting his first public tour, which is why I was present in the background to take notes on his service. Our tour guides preparation, customer service and inability to take leadership at each of the breweries has been given immediate attention. To summarize our services, Richmond Brewery Tours gives you the opportunity to experience the beers, atmosphere and culture of each individual brewery visited. We provide a background on beer, factoids on Richmond's past and current beer scene, snacks and water on the bus, one behind the scenes brewery tour (dependent on staff availability) and arrive back safely departing with a Richmond Brewery Tour souvenir. You obviously did not receive the summary of our services. I hope you'll give Richmond Brewery Tours a second chance and provide us with the same constructive feedback. Thanks again for your comments. Sincerely, Tommy Founder, Richmond Brewery Tours

We did the tour July 10th with Collin and had an awesome time seeing Capital Ale House, Strangebrews, and Arden. The company was friendly, the breweries interesting, and Collin was exceptionally informative and attentive. Kudos to that man for really going above and beyond. I would definitely repeat the experience and recommend this trip to my friends.

What a fun night!!! I rented the Richmond Brewery Tour bus for my boyfriend's birthday and we had a blast! Tommy was great to work with and our driver Jay was both informative and a ton of fun..(maybe I should mention patient and tolerable as well!! )We started off at COTU with a tasty, generous tasting and little history of the brewery in a private room in the back. We then headed to Hardywood for another generous tasting and private tour then over to Isley for more personal attention and more beer! We are all still talking about the great time we had on the brewery tour. I would HOP on Board again anytime!!

Photo of Katie R.

I bought tickets for this tour as part of my sister's bachelorette party. We had so much fun and I couldn't believe what an amazing deal it was! We went to Triple Crossings, Hardywood and Strangeways. The beer was delicious and our guides were knowledgable. Bartenders at the three spots also answered questions although Hardywood was slammed due to food truck Thursdays. I would certainly recommend this tour to anyone and am looking for another excuse to go again!!

Photo of Ashley E.

Had a great time! Tommy, our tour guide was great! We actually got to tour two breweries which was very exciting and all of the breweries were so passionate about the beer and excited to show us around. We had a private group of eleven people and everyone in the group thought it was amazing!

My wife and I spent this past weekend in Richmond and booked a tour online. We received no confirmation and began to get nervous when the day of the tour arrived and we still had no idea if our tour payment was received. We decided to send an email and call RVA Brewery Tours to confirm but only got voicemail with no returned call. We decided to assume our tour was good to go and arrived at Capital Ale House at 400pm. Upon arrival the Capital Ale House staff told us to stand to the side and wait for the tour guide to arrive. After 5-10 minutes of standing around we found out that the rest of the tour group was downstairs and proceeded to meet up with them. (You would think with 4-5 tours given per week the capital ale house staff could have given us this information rather than give us this blank stare upon our arrival). As for the remainder of the evening, it went great. Jay, the tour guide was knowledgeable, friendly, and had a great personality. The beers were very good and overall we had a great experience.

Photo of Brett H.

This was my first time on the official Richmond Brewery Tour. I didn't quite know what to expect. We arrived at Capital Ale House and met up with the rest of the group. Our guide gave us a brief history of beer and let us know our schedule for the evening. We visited Strangeways, Isley and Hardywood. Each stop included three or four tastings each. Our guide, as well as the staff at each brewery, were friendly and informative, as well as very accommodating. There was water and snacks available on the bus. We got to hook up our phone to the stereo so we could pick our own music to listen to on the trip. There was even some trivia from the guide with prizes on the way. When we stopped at Hardywood we were lucky enough to have the head brewer give us an in depth tour of the facility so that was a nice bonus. We were unable to tour the complete brewing process at the others but were still able to enjoy the great beers and even some live music. I would recommend this tour if you are interested in tasting the beer bounty of Richmond without having to worry about driving, while also receiving some inside information on the city's great beers. I hope to take another tour and visit some of the other new breweries. I heard that this tour also visits Licking Hole, Midnight, and COTU upon request. Also Triple Crossing and Ardent Craft Ales will be offered soon as well. All the more reason for me to get back on board. Cheers!

richmond va brewery tours

Apparently, things have gotten better. We all met up at Capital Ale House on a busy night.. The staff laid out the tour and gave us two high- gravity beers to get going. From there we loaded up the bus with beers and headed over to Legend. The flight was diverse (lager, brown, pilsner, IPA, and hopfest) our server ran down the descriptions and we order up some food. From there we headed to Strangeways and were greeted by a lovely bartender duo of Allison and Cheyenne (sp?). The beers were awesome and we got a behind the scenes look at the operation and brewing process. Feeling good, our Tour headed to Hardywood. It happened to be a huge night for them in releasing the ginger bread stout and our groups received a flight of beers and the ability to purchase the coveted gingerbread stout while the public waited In line for hours to receive their stout. Our guide was informative and fun and we finished the night back at capital ale. Overall we took home a set of growlers and some good stories. Thanks for the good times!

Richmond, one of nation's top 10 beer scenes, now offers Beer Trail Passport

richmond va brewery tours

RICHMOND, Va. -- More than 16 million people visit the Richmond Region each year, according to Richmond Region Tourism. The group says there's one thing that seems to be luring in more and more out-of-towners.

"People come here just for the beer," said Katherine O'Donnell, Richmond Region Tourism's Executive Director.

O'Donnell says the 30+ breweries found in the Richmond area have helped take back what was lost during the pandemic.

"We actually bounced back really fast, faster than a lot of parts of the state and other places in the country. It took about 18 months for us to recover, and hotel occupancy and collections have been up ever since, and we're setting record levels," O'Donnell said.

Richmond Region Tourism's Executive Director Katherine O'Donnell

Richmond was recently rated one of the top 10 beer scenes in the country by USA Today.

Now, Richmond Region Tourism is tracking how many people may be traveling here for beer through its new online Beer Trail Passport , which gives users points and prizes for each spot they visit.

"We can track people where they're coming from, and we know folks are here or are interested, from out of town, based on the stats," O'Donnell said.

Though the exact data on how many people come specifically for beer is still being collected, O'Donnell said the past two years have broken pre-pandemic records.

In 2022, about 17.5 million people visited the area, spending about $9.5 million per day.

In Fiscal Year 2023, hotels generated $35 million in lodging taxes, a 16% increase over the last year.

Poster image (20).jpg

O'Donnell said visitor volume is still below pre-pandemic levels.

“The area that’s probably the slowest in terms of leisure travel is the more economy-cost conscious traveler, might be cutting back, because of inflation, but by and large, people are still traveling, they still have that pent up demand from when they had to stay home during Covid," O'Donnell said.

With investments in Richmond's Diamond District and City Center coming alongside Henrico's Green City and Chesterfield's River City Sportsplex plans, O'Donnell said she expects the trend found in the tap rooms to continue.

Richmond Diamond District

“We actually are above the national average in people who come to visit their friends and family here, so that tells us that the people who live here are proud of where they live and they’re inviting their family to come," O'Donnell said. "I think that for us is really gratifying to see, the people who live here love it here and they want to bring their friends and family to come and breweries are a great place to do that.”

Trolley Features

We have three trolleys, two white and one burgundy, which are all similar to the way to the trolleys looked in the early 1920s. They can easily seat 25 with standing room for another 8-10. They will includes an option for a bluetooth speaker and microphone if requested, and good factory air conditioning for all those hot, humid summer days in Richmond. They have social seating, unlike bus seating whereby everyone faces forward, and is much more open. The seat frames are intricate ironworks, again very similar to the look in the early 1900s. It has a cow catcher on the front and a great trolley bell! RVA Trolley and our sister companies, Segway of Richmond and Pedego RVA specialize in customer service with friendly employees willing and able to help realize your dreams for your wedding day or any other special events for you and your friends, family, or coworkers!

Q: Where do I meet the trolley?? A: For our public trolley tours, meet at our store at 1301 East Cary Street!

Q: What time should I be there for my trolley tour? A: Please arrive at either location 15 minutes before the tour departs to allow time for check-in and allow for 10-15 minutes to find a parking spot. If the trolley is already parked outside, make sure someone in your group comes into the RVA on Wheels building to check in.

Q: Is there parking A: The Cary Street location has a number of parking garages within a block of the store. Please allow at least 10-15 minutes to find parking. You can find a parking garage at 12th St. across from the Omni Hotel, one on Virginia Street just off of Cary St., and another at the intersection 14th St. and Cary St. (If your vehicle is too tall for a garage there is a parking lot across from Main Street Station.)

Q: What if it’s raining A: The trolley is fully enclosed so our tours run regularly in the rain.

Q: Are tips included in the price?/Do we tip the guide? A: Tips are not included in the price of the ticket. They are not required or expected but certainly appreciated if you enjoyed the tour.

RVA on Wheels

Located in the historic Columbian Building in downtown Richmond’s Shockoe Slip, Segway of Richmond brings a full line of world-class personal transporters for guided tours of downtown Richmond, Segway rentals and individual purchase.

"We have lived in Richmond for 13 years now and Saturday was the first time we took this tour. Our guide was personable and knowledgeable. She had done quite a bit of research on her own, and she added those learned tidbits to our tour. She has inspired us to get out and explore and learn more about the city and it's history. This is a great tour to introduce your out of town guest to Richmond. The tour was about 2 hours. In that time we went from one end of Richmond to the other. We had used a groupon coupon for our fare. But I have to say, even without a coupon the fare will be worth the experience."

–jane m - Richmond, Virginia

"We took the Grim tales and Ghost tour Friday night. We had a great tour. The host was very knowledgeable of the area and told great stories about the buildings you drive by all the time and don't have a clue about their significance. "

-Dolphindelight - Richmond, Virginia

"Great guide and expert driver. Everyone on the trolley had a good time with all the highlights of the Richmond area on full display. Well worth the time for visitors and native Richmonders alike"

-Patricia Ballinger

"We hired RVA Trolley to provide transportation for our wedding guests to/from our ceremony/reception as well as to separately drive our wedding party around downtown Richmond for photos after our ceremony. All of their drivers were incredibly professional, on-time, and stuck to our decided upon routes. Hendley, our coordinator, was easy to work with, prompt with communication, and able to answer all of our questions. The trolleys definitely added a personal touch to our wedding and provided a great photo opportunity for our party and guests alike. While driving around on the cobblestones downtown wasn't the most comfortable, this unique experience is something we are definitely glad we pursued and would highly recommend to anyone else for events in the RVA area. "

Richmond Food News: April 25-May 1

A North Side gem, an RVADine tradition and more

by Eileen Mellon

April 25, 2024

tuna-tostada_eileen-mellon.jpg

This tuna tostada from Conejo aims to transport diners to sandy shores, as do the island-inspired drinks at The Emerald Lounge. Head below for our chat with the bar manager at the latter, Marcelo Lopez-Cortez, and more of the week’s Food News. (Photo by Eileen Mellon)

Tropical Treasures

There’s a certain level of trust that people bestow on a bartender, especially a bartender who’s helming one of the top cocktail spots in the city. We chatted with Marcelo Lopez-Cortez of The Emerald Lounge , a mixologist whom imbibers will recognize from his time at The Jasper or if they lean toward cocktails that taste like vacation. P.S.: Don’t miss the Fog Cutter. (Richmond magazine)

Remember That Place?

A North Side gem, Dot’s Back Inn  is the next local favorite in our series highlighting Richmond dining scene mainstays. A neighborhood spot that also attracts out-of-towners — they’ve had guests come from as far as Alaska — the diner has been serving breakfast all day and big ol’ burgers for over 20 years. If you’re unfamiliar, add the laid-back eatery to your list. (Richmond magazine)

Spring Restaurant Week

Looking to try some new restaurants without breaking the bank? The latest edition of  Richmond Restaurant Week wraps up on Sunday, April 28, so be sure to make those resos and experience the wallet-friendly, three-course, prix fixe annual fundraiser that benefits Feed More. Pro tip: Bring a few friends and order different meals to share for a full-on feast.

RVADine Debuts

Chef David Dunlap and his wife, Brittany, who debuted Midlothian Chef’s Kitchen two years ago, are doing it again. Located inside a historic home, 1870 Restaurant held its grand opening April 23. The French-inspired seafood and steakhouse is giving classic vibes via shrimp cocktail, lobster bisque en croute and a lineup of meat and poultry dishes including filet mignon, hanger steak, rib-eye, bone-in pork chop, lamb and duck, with accompaniments from creamed spinach to potatoes au gratin.

Promising messy, grab-the-napkins, relish- and onion-laden burgers and boasting decades of business at its original location, beloved Lynchburg diner The Texas Inn has officially planted Richmond roots. Helmed by Dave Saunders, a Lynchburg native turned Richmond PR pro, the outpost took over the former Izzy’s Kitchen space this week.

There’s a new fishmonger in town:  Shoreline Seafood Market opened its doors earlier this week at 10614 Patterson Ave. in the Canterbury Shopping Center.

Po’boys, pints and a spacious patio are calling. Coming soon, Petersburg’s  Oyster Society will introduce a casual, walk-up concept around the back of the restaurant.

A no-frills vegetarian favorite near VCU campus, 821 Cafe hit a 20-year milestone last weekend. (Richmond magazine)

Fungus was among us at the Richmond’s seventh annual Mushroom Mania . You can also nosh on the protein-packed delights at a slew of area restaurants. (Richmond magazine)

In our latest 5 Faves, check out these herb-laden dishes that sing of spring. (Richmond magazine)

The newly expanded Apothec is not your typical tearoom. (Richmond magazine)

Managing to stay crave-worthy after 14 years, Lehja is celebrating its birthday this week with a special menu from its first week in business.

Early-bird tickets have officially sold out for  Positively Delicious  on May 18, which means the chance to secure a seat at one of the biggest food fundraisers of the year is dwindling. The lineup includes Stanley’s, Shyndigz, Wishbone Food Shop and an auction for a private dinner with chef Jason Alley.

Goochland’s Hog Haven Farm  has secured a brick-and-mortar space in Oregon Hill. While the farm does sell meat, the business is best known for its hefty breakfast sandwiches (made with Hog Haven pork) cooked on a sizzling flattop that draws lines on Saturday mornings at RVA Big Market. Taking over the former Peddler on Pine space, the new digs will serve as a prep kitchen and, eventually, a space to snag sammies to go. (Richmond BizSense)

Foraged fungi from local purveyor HaaShrooms have made their way into a Virginia brew. Williamsburg’s Precarious Beer Project is now pouring a chanterelle apricot lager called Stone Trumpet in its taproom.

This weekend marks chef Sarah Tocco ’s last hurrah in the kitchen at Fine Creek Brewing Co. in Powhatan.

Jack Brown’s Beer & Burger Joint is now serving more than just patties and pints. Enjoy your Elvis burger with a cocktail, too.
