Your Personal Guide To The Mildura Region

Mildura Area: River Cruises On The Murray
There are a number of cruises that depart from the Mildura wharf. Paddle boats of course, but they aren't the only ones. Unfortunately, not all cruises or boats are in operation at this time... Covid 19 and ensuing travel restrictions have seen to that.
But the ones below are still going, and I will update this page as and when the rest of them return. Fingers crossed that it is in the very near future.
For those that want to know more about the Mildura Waterfront area , we have a page just for you. It's a great place to explore on a weekend, I highly recommend you check it out if you are a visitor to our area.
Rothbury | Melbourne | Mundoo | River Queen | Island Hopper
PV Rothbury
The PV Rothbury, built in 1881, 88 feet in length (27 metres). Weight 90 tons (approx 88 tonnes) and licensed to carry 175 passengers.
The P.V prefix stands for P addle V essel, and that indicates she is no longer powered by her original steam engine. Currently she is the vessel used in the twice daily river cruises through lock 11.
PS Melbourne
Launched in 1912, the PS Melbourne is probably the most well known Paddle Steamer on the Murray.
Still using the original wood powered steam engine, the PS Melbourne is 98 feet in length (30 metres), and licensed to carry up to 300 passengers. She has a maximum speed of 11mph (almost 18kph).
The PB Mundoo was originally fitted with a 1892 Garrett & Sons steam engine, but this was just not powerful enough for the Murray river currents around Mildura. So the decision was made to re-fit the vessel with a Cummins diesel hydraulic engine.
Steel hull construction, the PV Mundoo is 34.9 metres in length and is licensed to carry 180 passengers.
River Queen
The River Queen is owned by local couple Dennis and Veronica McLaughlan. They also own the "Island Hopper".
Available for party hire, the River Queen is the perfect boat for a group of friends that want to get out on the water and just have fun. They have an excellent sound system on board, and it's BYO.
The Island Hopper
What a great little boat this is. Catering for up to 12 passengers, you can either get a group together (min 6 people) and cruise anywhere you like, or join one of their package cruises.
Have an afternoon of cruising, swimming on isolated sand beaches, relaxing with drinks and music. Or join one of their regular excusions to places like Trenthams Winery.
Two Hour River Cruise Onboard PS Rothbury
This is a two hour cruise down the Murray. A feature of the trip is passing through lock 11 (twice, you have to come back again), and a close up view of the weir.
WHEN: Currently, this cruise operates Tue, Wed, Thur, and Sat. There is one morning cruise on Tuesday at 10.50am. The other days have the morning cruise in addition to an afternoon one at 1.50pm.
COST: $35 adult fare, with discount rates for students and children.
BOOKINGS & INQUIRIES: Ph (03)5023 2200
Three Hour Dinner Cruise
Take a 3hr spit roast carvery dinner cruise onboard either the Rothbury or the Mundoo , complete with live music. The Murray looks completely different after dark, you will get a totally new perspective on the river. The boats are fully licensed and have EFTPOS available onboard.
WHEN: This cruise is once weekly on Thursday nights, 7-10pm
COST: $75 adult fare, with discount rates for seniors, students and children.
Special Event Cruises Onboard PB Mundoo
The Mundoo is sometimes used as a substitute for some of the other cruises (such as the 3hr dinner cruise), but her primary role is for special functions. Weddings, events, conferences, etc.
You will also see the Mundoo out on the water when there is a special cruise organised to coincide with a local event, such as the Country Music Festival.
INQUIRIES: If you want to find out more about the Mundoo, just get in touch. Ph (03)5023 2200 . There is also more information on the Paddle Steamers website .
Two Hour Sunset Cruise Onboard The River Queen
Possibly Mildura's most well known "party boat", the River Queen does a 2 hr sunset cruise on Sunday evenings. Great on-board sound system, air conditioned, and licensed for BYO, this is a fantastic way to relax with a few drinks and watch the sun go down behind the river gums.
WHEN: This cruise is once weekly on Sunday nights, 5-7pm
COST: $30 adult fare, with discount rates for family groups.
BOOKINGS & INQUIRIES: Ph 0477 932 789 Ask about group charters, they cost less than you might think.
5 Hour Winery Cruise Onboard The Island Hopper
This is a 5hr cruise, departing Mildura Wharf at midday on Fridays. Wine tasting and live entertainment onboard as you make your way up the river to Trentham Estate winery.
There is a light lunch provided at the winery, and of course you will be able to purchase some of the bottles that you tasted on your way up here.
WHEN: This cruise is once weekly on Fridays. 12pm - 5pm
COST: $60 adult fare.
BOOKINGS & INQUIRIES: Ph 0477 932 789
Other Cruises
There are a number of other cruise options that are currently not operating. I'm sure these will be back on the water in the near future, and I will update this page at that time.

YOUR EXPERIENCE IS OUR PRIORITY
Mildura Cruises was born out of the love of living by the Mighty Murray River and the experiences that the McLaughlan family grew up with. Back in December 2016 the husband and wife team purchased the Riverqueen Voyager from the ‘River King’ Wayne Roberts and Gayle Kennedy who were the founding operators for over 17 years.
Dennis and Veronica embraced this newfound adventure due to the many water cruises they had experienced with Wayne and Gayle. They enjoyed the pleasure of getting on the boat, having a sip and enjoying a nibble whilst they floated along the Mighty Murray River. An extremely relaxing way to see this local beauty.
We now fast forward to 2024 and the McLaughlan family have now grown their business and expanded their fleet to THREE vessels operating throughout the year.
WHAT WE OFFER
Mildura Cruises offers serval different experiences across all three vessels from our smallest vessel holding up to 12 guests to our largest vessel holding up to 80 guests.

MILDURA PADDLE STEAMERS
Leave the road, take the River!
(03) 5023 2200
ABOUT MILDURA PADDLE STEAMERS
Mildura Paddle Steamers was established in 1955 by Captain Alby Pointon and his wife Freda, when he purchased a small launch in Mildura, called the “Donald Duck”. In 1957 Alby purchased an old Paddle Steamer wreck the “Mayflower” and rebuilt her to carry passengers. The Mayflower became too small and after searching along the river, he purchased the Paddle Steamer Melbourne also as a wreck, in 1965. He then restored her to the magnificent Paddle Steamer she is today. The Rothbury was then purchased in 1968 and underwent a lengthy restoration by Captain Pointon, a total of 8 years.
During the 1970’s the Coonawarra was acquired along with other partners, and was operated at Murray Bridge in S.A. after extensive refurbishing. Eventually Alby brought the Coonawarra also, back to Mildura in 1981, but she was later sold due to health reasons. In 1999, Captain Alby Pointon and Freda bought their final boat to Mildura, the Paddle Boat Mundoo. She is the designated function vessel that caters for Weddings, Functions and Conferences.
With his unique foresight Captain Alby Pointon has rebuilt three Paddle Steamers and brought others to Mildura. The Pointon family have operated river cruises in Mildura for over 64 years, with the Management being handed on to their children and grandchildren. It is our pleasure to show you this section of the Murray River at Mildura, on board the Paddle Steamer Melbourne, Paddle Vessel Rothbury or the Paddle Boat Mundoo.

See inside a new ultra-luxury river cruise line that's charging up to $59,520 per person
- Newcomer Riverside Luxury Cruises wants to break into the growing river cruise market.
- The ultra-luxury cruise line operates former Crystal ships in popular European rivers like the Danube.
- Riverside's 2024 cruises start at $1,055 per person for four days.
A new ultra-luxury cruise line wants to be the swankiest travel-by-river vacation option.
To do so, it's enticing cruisers with truffle-infused butter, $320-per-person dinners, and butlers that can be beckoned with a simple WhatsApp message.
Affluent travelers , meet Riverside Luxury Cruises.
The budding company first set sail in March 2023. With a year of service under its belt, its three ships are now sailing some of Europe's most popular rivers — starting at more than $260 per person per day.
Riverside is operated by Seaside Collection, a European hotelier.
The firm had its sights set on a river cruise venture since 2018, Jen Halboth, CEO of Riverside Luxury Cruises, told Business Insider.
Ironically, COVID-19 was the reason it got into the business.
Crystal Cruises declared bankruptcy in early 2022 amid the pandemic. Shortly after, Seaside purchased and updated five of the then-defunct cruise line's ships.
Three of these vessels now make up Riverside's fleet. The other two are being leased to competitor Uniworld River Cruises.
River cruising has become increasingly popular as wealthy travelers gravitate to ultra-luxury small-ship vacations.
River cruise ships are much smaller than their behemoth ocean-based counterparts, allowing Riverside to sail in waterways like Europe's Rhine, Rhone, Danube, Main, Moselle, and Saône rivers.
Along the way, guests can explore destinations many giant ships can't easily access — like Budapest, Hungary; Frankfurt, Germany; and Amsterdam — sometimes visiting more than one port in a day.
One of Riverside's shortest and cheapest 2024 voyages starts at $1,055 per person for a four-day Danube River cruise from Passau, Germany, to Vienna.
Alcohol and excursion packages can tack on an extra $75 to $175 per person per night.
Looking to ball out? The most expensive and longest itinerary is $59,521 per person for a three-river, 22-day cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest, Hungary, in the most expensive suite with the most inclusive package.
To compare, the cheapest 2024 voyage with all-inclusive luxury competitor Uniworld River Cruises starts at $2,000 per person for an eight-day Danube River sailing.
River cruisers tend to be over the age of 55.
But the new company is targeting guests 45 years old and older, specifically those who frequent luxury vacations but have yet to try a river cruise.
"New luxury travelers want to be pampered, get off and have an adventure, and come back and be taken care of," the cruise line's CEO said.
"Pampering” they will get.
Of Riverside's three ships, the 394-foot-long, 74-foot-wide Mozart can accommodate the most guests — up to 162, not including the 82 crew.
Yes, it's larger than Uniworld's ships, which range from 32 to 159 guests. But it's also significantly smaller than Royal Caribbean's new 9,950-person Icon of the Seas ocean vessel.
Like most cruise liners, Riverside's three ships have spas, buffets, and plush lounges and bars.
During the day, travelers can enjoy lunch at the open-air grill and relax to live music courtesy of Steinway and Bösendorfer pianos, no less.
At night, they can dine on a seven-course meal at the 295 euros ($320) per-person Vintage Room.
Riverside’s ships have up to 5 restaurants. Vintage Room is the only specialty option.
The cost to dine includes a wine pairing and plates like veal with truffle and chanterelle mushrooms and "surf and turf" with beef sirloin and scallops.
But don't expect a lackluster, rushed meal at the other complimentary options: "This is not a churn-and-burn," the company's CEO said of the ships' Waterside restaurants. "You come in for fine dining."
Infused, whipped butter is apparently one of Riverside's hottest commodities.
Sometimes, it has chiles. Other times, it's infused with citrus. If you're lucky, you'll get one with truffles.
"People were raving about our butter," Halboth said. "Everyone's waiting to see what butter they'll get at dinner each night."
Need to sleep off all that dairy? You're in luck. Every cabin has a king bed.
Riverside's suites range from 194 to 883 square-feet. These high-end cabins include butler service, stocked mini-bars, and espresso machines.
Some suites also have double-sink vanities and walk-in closets, a hallmark of an ultra-luxury cruise vessel .
Does Riverside’s more than $260 per person, per day fare seem reasonable now?
If yes, book soon. It'll only get more expensive from here.
These fares don't offset the amount Riverside is spending on amenities like the upscale food, according to Halboth. To make up for these expenditures, the cruise line plans to raise its prices gradually over the next two years.
The company's CEO said bookings have been 'a little lighter' since the start of 2024.
But the back half of the year is "filling up" thanks to Americans: About 70 to 80% of its guests are from North America, the company said.
Riverside will operate its Mozart, Ravel, and Debussy ships for three years as it 'hones the brand,' Halboth said.
The cruise line's two additional vessels would join its fleet in the next few years.
Given the growing popularity of river cruises , it's a good time for companies like Riverside to start expanding.
However, it could face plenty of incoming competition.
Jamie Loizou, the UK managing director of luxury river cruise line AmaWaterways, is forecasting 2024 as a "pivotal" year for the river cruise industry, noting that 15 new river-based vessels are expected to launch this year, Cruise Critic reported .

The Murray is much more than a river, it is quintessentially Australian experience. Within a relatively short distance from Adelaide and Melbourne you can experience jaw-dropping beauty, diverse history and luxury all surrounded by a sense of peace that has to be experienced to understand.
As the Murray carves its way through our sun-burnt and contrasting landscape you'll discover a new part of the world that's not overrun with tourists and will allow you time to reconnect with yourself, family and friends.
Enjoy a Proud Mary Cruise
Join the intimate cruising vessel, the Proud Mary to discover the Murray River's eco-system at its best. Only a 45 minute drive from Adelaide the vessel embarks and disembarks guests from Murray Bridge , where garaging is available for those wishing not to transfer via our luxury Expedition coach. Offering both 5 night and 2 night cruise, the Proud Mary gives you an excellent opportunity to see the river environment in a different perspective and may allow you to view some of the nocturnal wildlife, especially birds such as pelicans, night herons, owls and coots. Our experienced and friendly staff will ensure all your personal needs are attended to every step of the journey, so sit back, relax and experience the beautiful Murray River at its best aboard the Proud Mary cruising vessel.
Cruises on Australia's Murray River
The Murray River and its surroundings are normally overlooked as a significant cruising region of international appeal but many visitors are now discovering the Murray River is a wonderfully natural and great place enjoy. A slow river that easily touches your soul and satisfies the inner spirit.
Spud Hilton, San Francisco Chronicle Staff Writer recently stated "The Murray is the ultimate lazy river, a 100-million-year-old ribbon that winds 1,470 miles through South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales, passing farms, Aboriginal homelands, red gum forests, holiday cottages, arid scrub and towering ochre-colored limestone cliffs festooned with snow-white cockatoos."
Mornings you'll find mirror-perfect water, not yet disturbed by by a sole. As the mist gently rises over the water, golden sunrays pierce the huge river red gums and pelicans silently look for fish as they'd done the night before. You should encounter incredible wildlife including kangaroos, emus, koalas, goannas, kookaburras and much more. You'll find other early risers will enjoy the serenity with you but there's plenty of quiet spots to be with yourself and a nice cup of tea or coffee.
Traffic along the river is fairly minimal. You'll find milk boats, fishing craft, some ferries in South Australia, occasional small paddleboats and a diverse amarda of houseboats (Murray River is the houseboating capital of Australia). The Murray is used for by watersports enthusiasts with ski boats and canoes and kayaks .
Part of the rich history of Australia is it's Murray-Darling paddle steamers . The Murray River was used by more than a hundred paddle steamers and barges during the heydays to the late 1800's to deliver supplies to settlements upstream and returned loaded with wool and wheat. When the railroads opened up the territory by 1890, the paddle steamers ceased as a popular mode of transportation. Nowadays a few remain for leisure cruising on the Murray yet Australia still has the largest range of active paddle steamers in the world.
Naturally on each cruise you'll receive a mixture of information on river history, folklore, environmental information, free time to chat, relax and much more. Some longer cruises allow you the opportunity to get off the boat and experience Aboriginal culture, shearing exhibitions and other tours to learn, engage and explore the local region. You can enjoy local walks at some of the historic towns or cliff top climbs.
Back on board while the rugged and beautiful world of the Murray River landscapes slowly pass you by, you'll stay in comfortable and clean cabins on overnight accommodation for the longer cruises. Most cruises offer meal and food options. Short river cruises may offer you light snacks or cafeteria style food, while the longer overnight cruises offer great dining with food that is professionally prepared (and yes you can even experience Vegemite if you want one of Australia's great challenges).
One of the greatest things you'll take away from your Murray River cruise is an appreciation of the Murray's abundant beauty and intrinsic value to Australia's culture and meaning. Aboriginal occupation of the region in some parts dates back over 40,000 years. There are opportunities for guided indigenous walks, where guides talk and showcase the importance of the land and their relationship with the river. You'll enjoy the dreamtime story as different Aboriginal tribes and clans offer their stories of the land and river. The stories connect you to their ancient culture and give you a deep insight to the need to protect Australia's most important river.
Still not sure you're going to have a great time?
As you sit back and absorb one of the world's most incredible and diverse river systems you can watch the captain slowly guide the boat around the myriad of river bends. Each bend unfolds a new view, new landscape and new secret that will keep you guessing and wondering. But the biggest question you may have is "will the captain let me drive?" now that would top off your Murray River "no worries" cruising experience!
