How to download files using safari on your iphone or ipad.

Need to quickly download a file on your iPhone or iPad? Here's how you can do this using Safari or a third-party app.

Quick Links

How to download files using safari, how to the change default download location, alternative for ios 12 users: documents 5 by readdle.

In your work or personal life, you'll sometimes need to download a file on your iPhone or iPad. Using the new feature introduced in iOS 13 and iPadOS 13, you can now do this directly in Safari. No third-party app needed!

Safari's download manager is a hidden new feature in the  iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 updates. If you're going about your day, browsing the web, you probably won't be aware of the feature. Instead, it comes up when you tap on a download link.

Go to a web page and find the link for a file you want to download. When you select it, you'll see a popup with the filename asking if you want to download it. Tap on the "Download" button.

The download will start, and you'll see a new "Downloads" button appear next to the address bar at the top of the browser. Tap on the button to reveal all current downloads. From here, you can monitor the progress of multiple downloads.

If you want to stop a download at any time, simply tap on the "X" button.

Once the download is finished, tap on the file to preview it. If you've downloaded a media file, image, or a PDF, you'll be able to see it in the preview window.

You can then share the file to any app. Tap on the "Share" button from the bottom-left corner.

Press the "Search" icon next to the filename in the Downloads section to open the file.

Once you open the file in the Files app, you can tap and hold on the file to reveal the menu.

From here, tap on "Delete" to delete the file.

By default, the downloaded files are saved to the Downloads folder in iCloud Drive in the Files app. This is a great option if you have a paid iCloud storage plan  because it allows your downloaded files to instantly sync across all your devices.

But if you're on the free, 5GB tier, you might not have space for storing large files.

Thankfully, you can change the default location to local storage. Open the "Settings" app and go to Safari > Downloads. If you can't find the browser on your phone, try using Apple's Spotlight search to locate it.

Here, switch the selection to "On My iPhone" or "On My iPad" depending on your device.

By default, Safari will pick the "Downloads" folder. You can change this by tapping on the "Other" option to select any folder from the local storage (or from a cloud storage option).

The new download manager in Safari is exclusive to iOS 13, iPadOS 13, and above. If you haven't updated to the latest OS (which you should), or if you're in a situation where you can't update, here's a workaround for you.

Try using the free Documents 5 app by Readdle . It's an all-in-one browser and file manager app.

Open the Documents 5 app and tap on the "Browser" button in the bottom-right corner to switch to the browser mode.

Now, navigate to the page with the download link and tap on it. From the next screen, select the folder where you want to download the file and tap on "Done."

The download will now start. You can tap on the "Downloads" tab to view all downloads.

Tap on the "Files" button from the bottom-left corner to switch to the file manager. From here, tap on the "Downloads" folder to see your downloaded file. You can tap on the download to preview it in the app. Tap on the "Menu" button to view options for opening the file in another app.

Safari's download manager is just one of the many new features in iOS 13. Take a look at our list of the  best iOS 13 features to learn more.

How to download audio on a Mac

Karen Haslam

Do you want to save the audio from YouTube or download the embedded audio from a website? Perhaps you want to download the audio track of a movie, grab the audio from a PowerPoint presentation, or save some music from Soundcloud. While there may be some legal issues if you don’t have the rights to the audio you are downloading, if it’s for your own personal use, then some apps will allow you to download audio from the web. We show you how.

In our example, we will be recording or downloading sound from YouTube, but you could, in theory, make a copy of the sound from any website or app.

We’ll start with a free option, although the other options we cover do have free trial versions that might be suitable for your purposes.

Recording audio on a Mac using QuickTime

Apple’s QuickTime Player software can be found on every Mac, and believe us when we say that it’s more than just a video player. You can also use it to record the screen, record yourself via the FaceTime camera and, most importantly, record audio.

Here’s how you can use the QuickTime app to record the audio from a website:

  • Open QuickTime Player (press Command+Space and start typing QuickTime to locate the app).
  • Right-click (or control-click) on the icon in the Dock.
  • Choose Record Audio.
  • Click the arrow beside the record button and check that Internal microphone is selected.
  • Find the webpage which has audio you want to record.
  • Click the record button and start playing the audio.

The quality of the recording won’t be as good as with the paid-for options, and as it’s utilising the Mac’s built-in microphone, it’ll also record environmental noise – so don’t make a sound. You will also have to leave the audio playing while it records.

Luckily there are some better options if you want to download audio from websites such as YouTube, Vimeo, Soundcloud, or another streaming audio source. You can also grab the audio from Powerpoint, Podcasts, and more. We’ll start off with our favourite option, the Parallels Toolbox.

Downloading audio on a Mac with Parallels Toolbox

Parallels Toolbox is a collection of tools that simplify some of the things you might want to do on your Mac, such as Download Video, Free Memory (we cover clearing RAM here ), Find Duplicates, or Hide Desktop.

Download Audio is one such tool and it’s really easy to use.

Parallels Toolbox is available as a free 7-day trial. The full version costs £15.99 a year, and you can buy it here .

Here’s how to use Parallels Toolbox to download the audio from a website:

  • Install Toolbox – there is a free 7-day trial here https://www.parallels.com/uk/products/toolbox/
  • Once Toolbox is installed, click on the Toolbox icon in the menu at the top of the screen (near the clock).
  • Choose Download Audio. A pop-up window will appear.
  • Open the webpage with the audio you wish to download and either copy and paste, or drag and drop the URL into the Download Audio window.
  • When you drop in the URL the download will automatically begin. Beware it may take some time, our 71.1MB download took about an hour, but obviously, it depends on the speed of your internet connection.
  • Click on the file in your downloads folder and it will open in iTunes and start to play.

safari download mp3

The file downloaded as an .m4a file (MPEG 4) and included a cover image. Audio quality was very good.

Downloading audio on a Mac with Audio Hijack

Another option for downloading audio is Audio Hijack, although this is a little more complicated to use than Parallels Toolbox, the trial version (available here ) will continue to work, so you don’t necessarily need to buy the full version.

However, in trial mode the quality of captured audio will degrade after ten minutes, so you might not want to record anything too lengthy. The full version costs $71 and you can buy it here .

  • Download Audio Hijack and open the app.
  • Click on New Session.
  • Click on New Blank Session.
  • Click on Application.
  • Choose Safari (if it’s a webpage that you wish to grab audio from).
  • You’ll need to install ACE (Audio Capture Engine) to record audio from Safari.
  • Click on Install ACE and enter your system password when required.
  • Click on Recorder and drag that unit into the window.
  • You can choose your Recording Format Quality, we left it at High-Quality MP3.
  • Click on the Application tab and add the URL of the page with the audio you wish to record.
  • Now click on the Record button, the webpage will open. You may need to start the music playing.
  • It records in real-time, so you may wish to leave it for a little while.
  • When you are done, click on the record button again to stop it.
  • Once you have finished recording, click on the Recordings tab.
  • You can play the recording inside the app.
  • Alternatively, you can click on Actions and then click on Add to iTunes.

The audio quality was similar to that of the Parallels Toolbox version, but as we said, the audio quality degrades after 10 minutes unless you pay for a license. Read our review of Parallels Toolbox .

Tips & Tricks

Troubleshooting, save an audio or video file directly from the media viewer in safari.

Save an audio or video file from Safari in Mac OS X

Many Safari users have noticed that when trying to save a raw audio file or video file that is loaded directly from the web within Safaris media viewer tab or window, the “Save As” default option will bring about a ‘.webarchive’ file – not exactly the multimedia file that users are looking to save. This has led some users to believe that Safari doesn’t support downloading of mp3, m4a, mpg, mov, and other files, but that is not the case. There’s two easy solutions to this nuisance, both of which will allow you to actually save the media document to your local hard drive from a media viewing window in Safari.

While this works in all versions of Mac OS X and just about all versions of Safari, at the moment this doesn’t work in iOS, so iPad and iPhone users will need to rely on another option to save audio/video to their devices.

Option 1: Switch the Save Format to Page Source

The default “Save As” formatting option in Safari is ‘Web Archive’, which aims to download an entire embedded webpage, text, HTML source, images, media, and all. That’s fine if you want to save a webpage locally, but that’s pretty useless if you’re wanting to save a video file or audio file that you’ve got in the web browser. The solution? Easy, just change the save format to “Page Source”

From Safari with an audio or video file loaded directly from the URL…

  • Choose “Save As” from the File menu as usual (or hit Command+Shift+S)
  • At the Export As menu, name the file whatever you’re looking to call the video / audio document when saved
  • Choose the “Format” option, preset to Web Archive, and change it to “Page Source”
  • Now choose ‘Save’ as normal to save the actual media file

Save an audio or video file directly from Safari by downloading the Page Source of the media file

I know you’re thinking “Page Source? Isn’t that for saving source code and used by developers?” Well, no not always, in this case “page source” is the actual media file, like an mp3 or m4a document.

If for some reason you can’t get that to work, you can use option 2 which directly downloads the video file (or audio) as it’s loaded within a browser tab or window.

Option 2: Use “Download Video As”

The other option is somewhat hidden and certainly not obvious, but it lets you download whatever multimedia file is loaded into a web browser window, whether it’s an MP3, MPG, m4a, mov, MKV, wav, whatever you’re looking to save. To access the hidden “Download Video As” feature here’s all you need to do:

  • Right-click somewhere in the media play timeline (or Control+Click)
  • Choose the “Download Video As…” option from the popup menu

Download Video As option in Safari will save audio or video files in their raw format

Now just save the file as normal, putting it somewhere you can easily find. The default location will be the ~/Downloads/ folder that Safari will choose.

Either trick works, so if you’ve been frustrated by the ‘webarchive’ files saving rather than the music or movie files in familiar formats that you intended to download, that’s all you need to do.

It’s also worth remembering that you can always use the OS X encoder tools to convert the media file format to something else later, like a ringtone , if you decide that the file type you downloaded isn’t what you’d rather be working with.

A tip like this should have example audio and video files on the page to actually try the tip.

This doesn’t appear to work for flash video…

Or just put the cursor in the URL bar (Command-L), hold down the Option key, and press the Return key.

Ooh that’s a good one, thanks DCJ001!

That worked brilliantly. Thanks!!

Media Viewer Tab, sorry

I’m sorry I must not be understanding correctly. Media Player Tab? I have not seen this, how do I open this tab? Thankyou.

It should probably be clarified further, but any media viewed directly by it’s URL within a window or tab. For example, a link like this directly to a media file: http://www.stephaniequinn.com/Music/Allegro%20from%20Duet%20in%20C%20Major.mp3

Thanks that helps

I’ve always thought that was frustrating with Safari. You can also download media through the Activity Monitor (or at least you used to) but what’s the point when you can use Firefox or Safari? Save As saves the file you expected to download every time with either other browser. No tweaking necessary.
