The buttons of the Apple internet browser app Safari

It's no secret that Safari is the go-to browser for many Mac users . Sure, other browsers like Google Chrome have their advantages , especially if you're deep into Google's ecosystem, but using third-party browsers other than Safari on your Mac has downsides. Safari is optimized for macOS and integrates seamlessly with your other Apple devices like your iPhone and iPad by using Handoff.

If you've been a part of the Apple ecosystem for a while now, you're probably aware of Handoff, a very convenient Apple feature that allows you to begin a task on one of your devices, and pick up where you left off on another device.

Safari is no exception — Handoff allows you to start reading or watching something on your iPhone or iPad, and pick up where you left off on your Mac. This not only saves you the time of looking for a webpage but also makes jumping from one task to another extremely simple. Like any application, keeping Safari up to date is extremely important. Not only do new Safari updates come with newer features, but Apple also frequently rolls out updates to address security threats.

Now that you know it is a good idea to install Safari updates whenever they're rolled out, the real question is: How do you update Safari? Strangely enough, if your Apple device is updated to macOS Ventura or later , the only way to update Safari is to update your Mac itself.

How to update macOS

While you can't update Safari without updating macOS, you can check which version of Safari you're currently using. To do so, open the Safari app on your Mac and click on Safari from the menu bar. Now, select About Safari from the dropdown menu. Once you do so, a dialogue box will appear. The version of Safari you're currently using should be mentioned below the "Safari" text.

If you'd like to update Safari, follow the steps below to update macOS:

Click the Apple menu in the menu bar and select System Settings from the dropdown menu.

Select General from the sidebar on the left.

Click Software Update and wait for a few seconds.

Now, if a new update is available, click Update Now next to Updates Available.

If a Safari-specific update is available, you can click More Info and select Safari from the "Updates are available for your Mac" section.

To avoid having to update macOS manually to update Safari, we recommend enabling automatic updates. This way, you won't miss out on new features and can rest easy, knowing that Apple has fixed any known security threats . To do so, click the info icon next to Automatic updates and toggle on the switch next to Download new updates when available, Install macOS updates, and Install Security Responses and system files.

How to update the Safari browser on your Mac computer by installing the latest version of macOS

  • You can update your Safari browser on a Mac computer by updating to the latest available version of macOS.
  • For those with macOS Mojave or later, you can easily check to see if there are any updates available for your computer and its various apps in your System Preferences.
  • If you have an older version, you'll instead have to go through the App Store.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories .

The first step to updating your Safari browser is checking if your Mac actually has any available system updates.

If you have macOS Mojave or later, upgrades will come via your System Preferences. If you have a software update available, you can install it to get the updated version of Safari.

System Preferences is also where you can check for any individual upgrades to other Mac apps and programs that might be available for your computer.

Here's how to check if you have any updates available, and if so, how to install them:

1. Click the Apple logo in the top-left corner of the screen and selecting "System Preferences."

2. Select "System Updates" — it's marked with a gear icon.

3. Your computer will then check if there are any updates or upgrades available for your Mac.

4. If there are upgrades available, click "Upgrade Now" to continue.

To make things easier, you can tick the box next "Automatically keep my Mac up to date" so that you won't have to worry about making updates in the future.

If you have an older MacOS version, like High Sierra, Sierra, or El Capitan, for example, you would be able to check for updates by going to the App Store — which can also be accessed via the Apple menu in the top-left corner of the screen.

From there, toggle over to the "Updates" section, if necessary, and click "Update," next to Safari (if available), or "Update All" if multiple updates are available.

How to update the Safari browser on your Mac

Apple has been consistent in updating Safari with new features in the past years, including performance enhancements and some whopping privacy upgrades . The MacOS Monterey update is also giving its browser a new look with Safari 15, a version that includes new web code support for more advanced pages, Passkey support for the iCloud Keychain, highlights to emphasize important information, and a whole lot more.

Step 1: Head to the App Store

Step 2: check your updates, step 3: update safari if available, step 4 (optional): add safari extensions.

If you don’t have automatic updates turned on or are delaying certain updates for your Mac, you may not be able to benefit from the latest features right away. The solution is to manually update Safari itself — and fortunately, it’s quite easy to take care of. Here’s how to do it.

Log into your Mac and go to the App store. You can easily open it by selecting the Apple icon in the top-left corner of the MacOS screen and then select App Store .

  • Don’t download the latest macOS Ventura update just yet

When the App Store first opens, look to the left-side menu. Toward the bottom, you should see a section called Updates . Navigate there to check on the status of available app updates.

The Updates section is divided into several parts depending on the status of your apps. There may be a Pending section for apps that are in queue to be updated but need authorization or more time to complete. There could be an Updates Available section for apps that have available updates that haven’t been started yet. And you may also see a Recently Updated section to check on updates that have been recently applied.

Look for Safari in the Pending or Updates Available sections. If you see it look for a blue Update button to the right of the app. If available, select this to begin your Safari update.

Troubleshooting note: If it looks like something is wrong with Safari, such as a pending update that can’t complete or a notice that says something like Unable to Update Safari , then you should try rebooting your Mac and updating again to see if this helps. If it does not work, you should check on your MacOS updates. If your version of MacOS has fallen behind the latest updates for Safari, it may not be available until you complete a more comprehensive upgrade.

Remember, you can typically use this full MacOS update method to update Safari at any time. However, since a MacOS update requires backing up your data and logging out of everything beforehand, it’s not always a feasible option if you’re in the middle of some long-term work. Updating Safari by itself may be a better option.

If you are excited about a new extension that has recently come to Safari, a standard update won’t include it — you’ll have to add it yourself. In the App Store, select the Categories option in the menu. In the list that appears, select Safari Extensions .

Here, you will be able to view the latest extensions and add them to Safari as you prefer. If you want some ideas, check out our list of the best browser extensions .

Reinstalling Safari

Keep in mind that you can choose to delete Safari entirely. If it looks like Safari has a bug or performance issue, deleting the app and reinstalling it is one method of getting everything up to date while fixing your issue. However, the only way to reinstall Safari this way is to reinstall MacOS altogether. You won’t lose any data, but it will take longer to do, so always be careful when deleting Safari.

A note about Safari on Windows

Yes, you can technically download Safari on Windows. However, since Safari 5, Apple has stopped working on this Windows version of the app, so no updates will be available for it. That also means that security and performance for the Windows version have fallen by the wayside, so we don’t suggest using this app at all.

Not everyone builds their home office around video calls. And if your home office also doubles as your bedroom, kitchen, or is tucked away in a cluttered corner of your basement, you'll be glad to know that Zoom lets you hide your surroundings from your co-workers. One way the software does this is by letting you change your Zoom background, allowing others in the chat to see you while swapping out your environment for something more professional.

While DVD and Blu-ray dominate today's world, VHS tapes ruled supreme in the '80s and '90s. It wasn't uncommon for families to document birthday parties, holidays, sporting events, and other big moments in life with their handheld camcorder, recording the footage onto a trusty VHS tape. Unfortunately, playing those VHS tapes is challenging nowadays, as it's unlikely that you still have your old VHS player (or that it's even still in working condition).

That means you'll need to look into converting your VHS tapes to DVD, Blu-ray, or digital formats to take a trip down memory lane. Even if you're not interested in checking out the footage today, it makes sense to get the film converted – after all, those VHS tapes are slowly deteriorating, and if they go bad, all that footage will be forever lost.

Apple has just released a software update for the Vision Pro headset that launched just over a week ago -- and it’s an important one.

Why Is Safari Not Updating on Your Mac?

If you’ve tried updating Safari on your Mac and encountered issues, several factors could be preventing the update. Let’s explore some common reasons for Safari failing to update on your Mac:

  • 🖥️ Outdated macOS : Safari is deeply integrated with macOS. If your operating system is outdated, it might not support the latest version of Safari. Ensure your macOS is up-to-date before attempting to update Safari.
  • 🌐 Internet Connection Issues : A stable internet connection is essential for downloading updates. Check if your Mac is connected to the internet and that the connection is stable.
  • 💾 Insufficient Storage : Updates often require free storage space. If your Mac is running low on space, it might not be able to download or install the update. Consider freeing up some storage.
  • 🚫 Server Issues : Sometimes, Apple’s servers might be overloaded or down, especially if a major update has just been released. If this is the case, try updating later.
  • 🛠️ Software Conflicts : Other software or utilities on your Mac might interfere with the update process. Consider disabling or uninstalling any recent apps or utilities and then try updating again.
  • 🔄 Automatic Updates Disabled : If you’ve disabled automatic updates, Safari might not update on its own. Check your settings to ensure automatic updates are enabled.
  • 🚧 Beta or Developer Versions : If you’re using a beta or developer version of Safari or macOS, you might face update issues. Consider switching to the stable release.

If you’ve checked all these factors and still can’t update Safari, it might be a good idea to contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store for assistance.

How to Update Safari on a Mac

Find out how to update Safari on your Mac to keep the browser running as smoothly and securely as possible.

If privacy, performance, and power efficiency matter to you while browsing online, then you have no reason to use anything other than Safari on your Mac. To get the best possible experience, however, you should install Safari updates when available.

The latest Safari updates come with not only feature enhancements but also critical bug fixes and security patches. Below, we'll teach you how to update Safari on a Mac.

How Do Safari Updates Work?

New Safari updates come bundled with macOS updates. But rather than installing everything, you can choose to apply updates only related to Safari.

Still, it's a good idea to install any other system updates when you have the time to improve the stability of other native apps and the operating system in general. Bug fixes are also one of the important reasons to keep your Mac updated , and that extends to Safari as well.

Additionally, it's not possible to update Safari to the most recent version unless you use a relatively new version of macOS. For example, you can't experience the newest Safari features if you don't have the latest version of macOS installed on your Mac.

But you can still apply the latest minor updates for older Safari versions regardless. Since the way to update Safari varies slightly between macOS versions, be sure to check which macOS version is installed on your Mac before processing.

How to Update Safari in macOS Ventura and Later

The process of updating Safari on the Mac is straightforward. If you use Safari on a Mac running macOS Ventura or later, you can get the update by visiting the Software Update section in System Settings. Here's what you need to do:

  • Click the Apple menu in the menu bar and choose System Settings from the dropdown.
  • Select General from the left pane, and then click Software Update on the right.
  • Wait for a moment while your Mac scans for new software updates.
  • Select More Info .
  • Select Safari-specific updates (if available), then click Install Now.

On the same page, you can also enable automatic updates. That way, you won't have to install updates for your system manually.

How to Update Safari in macOS Monterey, Big Sur, Catalina, and Mojave

If your Mac is running macOS Monterey, Big Sur, Catalina, or Mojave, updating Safari is similar to how you would update it in macOS Ventura, except that you'll be using the System Preferences panel. So, follow these steps:

  • Click the Apple menu in the menu bar and choose System Preferences from the dropdown.
  • Select Software Update .
  • Now, click on More Info .
  • Select any Safari-specific updates if available, and then click Install Now.

How to Update Safari in macOS High Sierra and Earlier

In macOS 10.13 High Sierra and older versions of the Mac operating system, you need to use the Mac App Store to update Safari instead. Follow the instructions below:

  • Open the App Store app on your Mac.
  • Head to the Updates tab.
  • Wait until the Mac App Store scans for new software updates.
  • Click on More within the Software Update section.
  • Now, click on Update next to Safari.

Run the Latest Safari Version on Your Mac

Not all Safari updates end up making a big splash on the Mac. In fact, you may barely notice a difference with most of them. But the various under-the-hood improvements from each update do stack up over time.

Despite Apple products usually performing updates flawlessly, there may be times when your computer might get stuck during the update process. But don't worry; there are ways to overcome that obstacle.

That’s why Safari comes with industry-leading privacy protection technology built in, including Intelligent Tracking Prevention that identifies trackers and helps prevent them from profiling or following you across the web. Upgrading to iCloud+ gives you even more privacy protections, including the ability to sign up for websites and services without having to share your personal email address.

Intelligent Tracking Prevention

Safari stops trackers in their tracks.

What you browse is no one’s business but your own. Safari has built‑in protections to help stop websites and data-collection companies from watching and profiling you based on your browsing activity. Intelligent Tracking Prevention uses on‑device intelligence to help prevent cross‑site tracking and stops known trackers from using your IP address — making it incredibly difficult to learn who you are and what you’re interested in.

Privacy Report

Safari makes it simple to see how your privacy is protected on all the websites you visit. Click Privacy Report in the Safari menu for a snapshot of cross-site trackers currently prevented from profiling you on the website you’re visiting. Or view a weekly Privacy Report to see how Safari protects you as you browse over time.

Strong security protections in Safari help keep you safe. Passkeys introduce a safer way to sign in. iCloud Keychain securely stores and autofills passkeys and passwords across all your devices. Safari also notifies you when it encounters suspicious websites and prevents them from loading. Because it loads each web page in a separate process, any harmful code is always confined to a single browser tab so it won’t crash the entire application or access your data. And Safari automatically upgrades sites from HTTP to the more secure HTTPS when available.

Passkeys introduce a more secure and easier way to sign in. No passwords required.

Passkeys are end-to-end encrypted and safe from phishing and data leaks, and they are stronger than all common two-factor authentication types. Thanks to iCloud Keychain, they work across all your Apple devices, and they even work on non-Apple devices.

Apple Pay and Wallet make checkout as easy as lifting a finger.

Apple Pay is the easiest and most secure way to shop on Safari — allowing you to complete transactions with Face ID or Touch ID on your iPhone or iPad, with Touch ID on your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air, or by double-clicking the side button on your Apple Watch.

Same Safari. Different device.

Safari works seamlessly and syncs your passwords, bookmarks, history, tabs, and more across Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Apple Watch. And when your Mac, iOS, or iPadOS devices are near each other, they can automatically pass what you’re doing in Safari from one device to another using Handoff. You can even copy images, video, or text from Safari on your iPhone or iPad, then paste into another app on your nearby Mac — or vice versa.

When you use Safari on multiple devices, your tabs carry over from one Apple device to another. So you can search, shop, work, or browse on your iPhone, then switch to your iPad or Mac and pick up right where you left off.

Save web pages you want to read later by adding them to your Reading List. Then view them on any of your iCloud-connected devices — even if you’re not connected to the internet.

iCloud Keychain securely stores your user names, passkeys, passwords, and credit card numbers and keeps them up to date on your trusted devices. So you can easily sign in to your favorite websites — as well as apps on iOS and iPadOS — and quickly make online purchases.

Apple updates macOS Safari with a new look, but you can turn off the big changes

A trip to preferences will tone down the design changes.

safari upgrade for macbook

Apple has released a redesigned version of Safari for macOS Big Sur and Catalina. The update, announced as part of the upcoming macOS Monterey , was released the same day as iOS and iPadOS 15, bringing the web browser’s new look and features across Apple’s platforms.

To update to the new Safari 15, you can go to System Preferences > Software Update, where it should automatically refresh and show up. Unlike updates to macOS, you shouldn’t have to reboot your computer after updating Safari.

The development behind this version of Safari has been interesting. The full OS update that it was originally a part of, which also brings features like Universal Control and Quick Notes, isn’t here yet, but Apple decided to ship the new Safari anyway. For those who have upgraded to iOS 15 , that’s a good thing — it means that you can immediately use tab groups across all your devices. The update also includes features like better tracking protection and automatic switching to HTTPS for sites that support it.

Apple’s original vision for Safari 15, which has been toned down slightly over the beta period.

While the Safari update brings new features, it also brings a new design. Apple’s made several changes to it since it was announced (though not as many as it’s made to Safari for iPhone ), tweaking it to be less starkly minimal. Looks-wise, it’s still a major change from Safari 14, but there are preferences that you can tweak to walk back some of the more distracting changes. If you don’t want websites to be able to change the color of your tab bar, you can go to Safari’s preferences > Tabs, and uncheck “Show color in tab bar.” If you want your tabs to be on their own row, you can switch from Compact mode to Separate.

safari upgrade for macbook

Unchecking “Automatically collapse tab titles into icons” turns the tab bar into a sort of carousel when you have too many of them. I certainly don’t prefer it, but it’s an option if that’s your sort of thing.

Unchecking the “automatically collapse tab titles” box hides the true chaos.

While Safari 15 takes a bit to get used to (I'm still getting over the learning curve myself), Tab Groups is a great feature to share between my iPhone and computer. Safari 15 also comes with the usual host of security updates , though none seem too severe. After you update, be sure to let us know what you think of the new design — is it a breath of fresh air or just another refresh that you’ll grudgingly get used to?

My one complaint is...doesn't *dark gray* usually mean something like "inactive"? I'm having trouble figuring out which tab I'm in when I only have 2 or 3 open because I keep thinking the *lighter* colored tab is the active one, not the *darker* one.

Ok, just figured out why I'm so discombobulated.

Guys if you don't like Safari don't use it. Apple is too controlling. Things are beautiful on the other side, using FireFox ('http://www.firefox.com') and Brave ('http://www.brave.com') (Chrome without Google surveillance code) both of which are open source which is so much better for you on the privacy side and they let you do much more than Safari with extensions. Most problems I have with websites are Safari and its webkit engine anyway. If you are looking for webkit engine and something that gives the same cool and quite performance of Safari, there is a new browser in beta called Orion ('https://browser.kagi.com') , its webkit based, get updates for older MacOS versions unlike Safari, and allows use of Firefox and Chrome extensions! Signup and you will receive an invitation link in some days. Why what happened? FOSS FTW! I have been bitten before. There are options in the browsers under bookmarks where you can book mark ALL opened tabs in each Window. You can save a copy. There is also an export option under File to user with other browsers too.

Ugh, maybe I'll get used to it but right now I'm finding this "chameleon" toolbar very awful to look at -- it's different on every site I visit and calls so much attention to itself. If you switch tabs a lot, it's very distracting. Maybe someone will write a plugin that stabilizes its appearance. Not a fan!

The default browser for macOS, Safari is one of the most popular choices for its privacy. It has improved a lot over the years, including features like reading mode, storing passwords, and prevent websites from tracking you . However, to run the browser smoothly, it is essential to update it.

In comparison to other apps, updating the Safari browser on Mac is a little tricky. Read on to learn how to install the update and why you need to do it.

Why do I need to update Safari in macOS?

Safari doesn’t receive as frequent updates as other browsers. Moreover, Apple releases updates for Safari alongside major macOS releases. Therefore, they include several improvements, new features, and bug fixes.

Additionally, an older version of Safari may not be fully compatible with the latest macOS and could potentially become a slowpoke.

Keeping the Safari browser updated means access to the latest features and protection against new security threats.

How to update Safari in macOS Sonoma and Ventura

As mentioned earlier, the update for Safari is included with the overall macOS update.

  • Go to Apple menu → System Settings.

Go to General, select Software Update

Further, you can toggle on options in Automatic updates to automatically download Safari updates.

Turn on Automatic Safari update on Mac

Depending on the options you chose, you might have to install the update and restart your Mac to use the latest version of Safari.

How to update the Safari browser in macOS Mojave or later

  • Tap the Apple logo in the menu bar.

Go to the Apple Menu, select System Preferences

How to update Safari on Mac running macOS High Sierra or earlier

Unlike macOS Mojave or later, you don’t get the option to update Safari separately. Hence, you’ll have to install the macOS update to get the latest version of Safari.

  • Look for the App Store in the Dock, or search for it in Launchpad.
  • Click the Updates tab.

Check for macOS updates from App Store on Mac

  • If available, select Update now to download it.
  • Wait for the Mac to install it.

The latest version of Safari for Mac is 14.0.3, and it’s available on macOS Big Sur.

You can’t. Although an older version of Safari for Windows is available for download, you cannot update it as Apple stopped developing the browser for Windows back in 2012.

The latest version of Safari for Windows is version 5.1.7, which was released back in 2012. There has been no update since then. Many users claim that the best version of Safari for Windows is 5.0.

Sometimes, the browser may not work properly if the latest update hasn’t been installed. See if the update is available. You can also try to Force Quit the Safari browser and relaunch it to check if it works.

There you have it. Wasn’t that easy? If you have any further queries, share them in the comments section below.

How to Update Safari on Mac

Avatar photo

Updating Safari promotes data security, eliminates bugs, and introduces new features. The process is easier than updating many other apps for Mac. Apple has done its users a great service by combining Safari updates with macOS updates.

safari upgrade for macbook

This leaves you with one less step to take, as it can be frustrating remembering to update apps and OS. Still, you might want to update Safari manually or check which version you have. Additionally, it might be helpful to reset Safari if you run into issues.

Let’s get into it and discuss a few helpful tips.

Table of Contents

Key Takeaways

Why is it important to update safari on mac, how to update all my apps at once on mac, forcing safari to update on mac without updating the os, how can i tell if i’m using the most recent safari update, how can i quickly reset safari on my mac, updating safari with the terminal, why isn’t my version of safari updating, final words.

  • It’s important to update your macOS promptly to ensure Safari stays up to date.
  • You can force Safari to update on Mac without updating the entire OS, but you should stick to simply updating the whole OS.
  • You can update all your apps at once through the Software Updates tab in System Preferences.
  • You can check the Safari version by selecting “About” from the Safari drop-down menu.
  • Resetting Safari can help resolve issues and improve performance, but it removes installed extensions.
  • Outdated versions of Safari may no longer be supported and require OS updates or switching to alternative browsers, so it’s best to stay on top of things.

Updating Safari on your Mac is a key part of the regular maintenance you should already be operating on your computer.

Having the most up-to-date version of Safari promotes data security, especially if Safari is your default browser. Apple’s updates frequently eliminate prior security issues while preventing new ones from arising.

Failing to update the browser may result in more frequent bugs and irritating glitches.

Sometimes, it may be convenient to simply update everything all at once. This is especially true if it’s been a long period of time since your last big overhaul update.

Your Mac might already be set to have automatic updates. This setting can be found in System Preferences under the Software Updates tab.

If you have any software to update, you’ll see a notification. You may also receive push notifications for certain updates, depending on your Mac’s settings.

You can work around the OS rule. We don’t recommend it, as it’s always a better option to update your OS, as a general rule of thumb.

Open System Preferences as normal.

safari upgrade for macbook

Next, simply select the Software Update tab to see any available updates.

safari upgrade for macbook

Then, download and install the updated version of Safari. This should only take a few minutes.

Finally, restart your computer after updating Safari .

It’s easy to lose sight of which version of an app or software you’re using. Apple updates Safari with shocking frequency, so you may have fallen behind on an update or two without even realizing it.

Just launch Safari as you normally would. Then from the Safari drop-down menu, select About Safari .

safari upgrade for macbook

Then it will show you the version of Safari that you’re currently using.

If it’s been a while since you updated Safari, the browser may begin to experience issues like slow loading times. Resetting your browser can act as a fresh start .

The only downside to resetting your Safari app on Mac is that you will lose access to things like extensions that you’ve installed. To get those back, save them elsewhere so you can re-download them after you’ve finished resetting the browser.

Resetting Safari can be done manually or through a third-party app, but we always recommend using the manual method first before exploring other avenues. It’s not too difficult to reset Safari on Mac, but there isn’t a simple “reset button” available to do it in one click.

Take the following steps to reset Safari:

Find the Safari cache by selecting the “History” tab in the menu bar. Then, select “Clear History.” This will reset Safari to its default settings. From the Clear menu, select All History , and then Clear History .

Be careful – the Clear History button is located right next to the “Cancel” button.

Next, launch the browser and click on the Safari tab in the menu bar. From there, select Preferences from the list.

safari upgrade for macbook

In the Privacy panel, select Manage Website Data .

safari upgrade for macbook

Click the Remove All button in the lower left-hand corner. The Delete Now button will finalize this process and erase any old, unwanted website data.

safari upgrade for macbook

This method is a little trickier, especially if you prefer to avoid using the Terminal. Still, it can be helpful if you just want to update Safari and not your OS yet.

For example, if you were using the latest macOS Ventura, you would use the command:

You should quit Safari before doing this. The softwareupdate command will try to force quit the app anyway before it installs.

You should also safely reboot your computer after you install the Safari update with the Terminal.

If Safari is not updating on your Mac, it may be due to having an older version of the operating system.

Assess the time it’s been since your last macOS update. If you have an older Mac, it may have even been years since your last major system update.

Unfortunately, Apple sometimes retires versions of Safari if they are simply too old to keep up with the times.

You can fix this issue by updating your OS, which will update your browser. However, if you don’t want to part ways with your OS just yet, your best bet would be to try another browser like Chrome or Firefox.

Some people only use one browser forever, which is fine, but having two on your Mac can save you from several problems in the future.

Safari has been the default browser for Apple products since January 2003. And many users have loved it the whole time. Like many apps, Safari updates alongside the rest of macOS. Fortunately, this is an easy process. This article discusses all of these tips.

What worked for you? Which Safari version do you have? Let us know in the comments!

Apple to unveil AI-enabled Safari browser alongside new operating systems

Marko Zivkovic's Avatar

Safari getting new AI tools in iOS 18

safari upgrade for macbook

The software — expected to debut as Safari 18 later in 2024 — is currently undergoing evaluation alongside internal builds of Apple's next-generation operating system updates, namely iOS 18 and macOS 15, according to people familiar with the matter. Should all of the new features make it to the release candidate stage, users will be treated to a new user interface (UI) for customizing popular page controls, a "Web eraser" feature, and AI-driven content summarization tools.

Intelligent Search - AI-enhanced browsing and text summarization

Engineers evaluating the latest builds of Safari 18 can find a toggle for the new page controls menu within the browser's address bar. The menu consolidates — and provides quick access to — old and new page control tools, among them being the browser's new "Intelligent Search" feature.

A screenshot of Arc Search on iPhone with a summary of an article from AppleInsider

This feature is not automatically enabled in test builds of Safari 18 and instead requires manual activation from the page controls menu. Once enabled, it's believed the tool leverages Apple's on-device AI technology — specifically the Ajax language-learning model — to identify topics and key phrases within a webpage for which to base the summarization.

In selecting key phrases, Apple's LLM software identifies sentences that provide explanations or describe the structure of objects, depending on the text in question. Words repeated within a text and key sentences are recognized as text topics.

These early indications suggest Apple is striving to deliver text summarization alongside Safari 18 later this year, though the exact implementation of this feature remains fuzzy.

Apple's text summarization features could be a response to rival generative AI tools, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT. But Apple's on-device models and technologies like Private Relay could make the experience much more secure for users. Intelligent Search is also likely to be the same AI browser assistant that one X user hinted at a couple of weeks back.

Web Eraser for better content-blocking

Also accessible from the new page controls menu is a feature Apple is testing called "Web Eraser." As its name would imply, it's designed to allow users to remove, or erase, specific portions of web pages, according to people familiar with the feature.

The feature is expected to build upon existing privacy features within Safari and will allow users to erase unwanted content from any webpage of their choosing. Users will have the option to erase banner ads, images, text or even entire page sections, all with relative ease.

A screenshot of 1Blocker's element blocking feature that removes selected parts of a webpage

The erasure is said to be persistent, rather than limited to a browsing session. This means that Safari will remember the changes even after the original tab or window has been closed.

When visiting a web page with previously erased content, Safari will inform the user that the page has been modified to reflect their desired changes. The browser will also give the user the option to revert changes and restore the webpage to its initial, unaltered state.

As for where Apple got the inspiration for Web Eraser, the company could have Sherlocked the feature from the third-party app 1Blocker. The application features a similar way of erasing ads, where users would tap ads to make them disappear.

Updated UI will move key tools into one easy location

The new page controls menu referenced throughout this article will attempt to offer Safari 18 users quick and easy access to several options previously located across different menus and the Share Sheet. Running on pre-release versions of macOS 15, for instance, the menu also pulls in the "Aa" menu common on existing iPadOS versions of the browser. These include zoom options, webpage settings for privacy controls, content blocking options, extension shortcuts, and access to the new AI and erasure tools.

A mockup image of desktop Safari with an iPad-like menu that includes AI and erase features.

These various options existed previously on macOS, but were found by navigating through the Safari settings menu. Having all of these controls in one central location in the Address Bar will make these options more discoverable for end users. Other options like on-page text search and reader mode are also in this menu.

This all suggests Apple intends to unite the iPadOS and macOS Safari UI paradigms when it unveils its new OS releases during its Worldwide Developers Conference in June.

AI-enhanced Visual Lookup feature could be available in 2025

Simultaneously, Apple is also working on a much more powerful visual search feature scheduled for integration sometime in 2025 that will allow users to obtain information on consumer products when browsing through images. People familiar with the tool say it's similar to the Visual Lookup feature, through which Siri can identify plants, pets and landmarks from photos.

An image of a black cat with big yellow eyes in Apple Photos with text below classifying it as a 'bombay'

Visual Search could be implemented as a system-wide feature. So, instead of surfacing search results in the Photos app, the user may be able to use Visual Search directly in Safari by selecting an image.

Given development of this tool is in the earlier stages, it remains unclear how Apple will ultimately go about implementing it. It also remains to be seen whether or not the feature will make it through internal testing.

The iPhone maker has expressed significant interest in artificial intelligence and more recently published research related to on-device language learning models. This goes hand in hand with widespread rumors about several other AI-powered software features, many of which are expected to make their debut later this year with iOS 18.

Another big year for Safari

From its inception, Safari was always meant to rival existing web browsers.

Safari was originally added to macOS as a means of replacing Microsoft's Internet Explorer for Mac, which was the default browser. Over the years, the app made its way to the iPhone , and has since received various upgrades over the years.

More recent versions of Safari provide users with personalized web suggestions, and allow for greater privacy protection with features such as iCloud Private Relay.

This latest set of enhancements only serves to better position Safari against the competition, in an ever-increasing landscape of generative AI tools and third-party ad-blockers.

While Apple tests many such features during different development stages, it is important to remember that not all of them make it to release. Apple has been known to delay features or cancel them entirely, so there's always a chance we may not see these new Safari features after all.

Along with Safari 18 and its associated improvements, we should also see a revamped Calculator with Math Notes make its way to iPadOS 18. Freeform Scenes and Adaptive Voice Shortcuts are new OS features, which are also expected to debut later this year.

Apple is expected to introduce various AI-related enhancements as part of iOS 18 and macOS 15, both of which should be announced at the company's annual WWDC on June 10.

"As for where Apple got the inspiration for Web Eraser, the company could have Sherlocked the feature from the third-party app 1Blocker. The application features a similar way of erasing ads, where users would tap ads to make them disappear." They may also have been inspired by Simplified Page....

As long as I can turn it off/hide it they can knock themselves out.

Will the web eraser feature remove pop up videos, such as the ones that appear on this site?

I use the 'Reader' function in Safari quite a bit, but sometimes it doesn't work very well. Seems like something that AI could help make better.

Web ads suck but how else do you think your favorite websites will stay in business? Are you prepared to pay a subscription to every site? I doubt it…

iOS 18 could supercharge Safari with more than just Apple's AI features

Published on April 30, 2024

Apple iPhone 14 safari imessage

  • Safari on iOS 18 and macOS 15 may pack an AI-powered summarization feature that leverages an on-device LLM.
  • It may also include a new web content eraser, which would enable users to delete webpage elements and sections, such as ad banners.
  • Apple may upgrade Visual Look Up in 2025 to include support for identifying consumer products in images — not just pets, plants, and landmarks.

It’s no secret that iOS 18 will offer some major new features powered by artificial intelligence. In fact, Apple CEO Tim Cook explicitly stated that the company would be revealing its AI goods at some point this year. While the specifics of these AI upgrades are generally vague now, it appears that Safari on iOS 18 may pack some of them.

According to information obtained by AppleInsider , Safari on iOS 18 and macOS 15 will receive a major update. For starters, users may be able to rely on AI-enhanced browsing and text summarization, similar to what the Arc browser currently offers. The on-device Ajax large language model (LLM) would reportedly scan the text to identify the main topics and summarize web content accordingly.

Interestingly, Safari version 18 may also introduce a web eraser, allowing users to remove certain elements from the sites they’re browsing. It will reportedly support the removal of ad banners, images, text, and other sections, potentially sherlocking 1Blocker in the process. The best part is that Safari may remember what elements a user has erased, even after they close the tab or app. This would retain their preferred layouts per each modified site indefinitely.

Otherwise, Safari 18 on macOS 15 may also include an updated address bar UI that matches that of iPadOS. Through this design tweak, Apple would further streamline Safari’s user interface across its different operating systems.

The report also points to an upgraded Visual Look Up feature that may debut in 2025. If it comes to fruition, users will be able to identify consumer products in images across the different apps. For reference, Visual Look Up is currently limited to images of pets, plants, and landmarks.

It’s worth mentioning that Apple engineers are reportedly testing these features internally. So, naturally, there’s a chance that some (or all) of them won’t make it to the public iOS 18 and macOS 15 beta builds, let alone the stable releases. Ultimately, we will get a definite answer on June 10, when Apple officially previews iOS 18 and macOS 15 during the main WWDC24 keynote.

Apple’s M3 chip is a victim of the times

Roman Loyola

The golden age of artificial intelligence has just begun, with AI tools now available that help people get more things done. But Apple’s presence in AI has been muted, to put it kindly. Apple needs to do something to make an impression and tell the world it’s keeping up with the times.

Apparently,  Apple plans to use its upcoming AI-enhanced M4 chip  to make that impression. While initial reports said that the  M4 will appear in new Macs coming this fall , a new report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says that the  M4 could debut in a new iPad Pro  at Tuesday’s  “Let Loose” event . It appears that the fall season or  WWDC24  in June (where Apple is expected to show off AI-enhanced updates to its various operating systems) can’t come soon enough for Apple.

Gurman states that the M4 is a “strong possibility” for the new iPad Pro. If it does happen, delivering the chip at this time would be a dramatic change from Apple’s typical chip cycle. The  M3 arrived just a bit over six months ago  with Apple unveiling not just the base M3 chip, but also the Pro and Max versions at the same time. That was a change in itself, but this would be a much bigger one.

If the M4 iPad Pro arrives that means the M3’s cycle in Apple’s Mac lineup is effectively done. While the M3 is overall an excellent chip, its legacy will be a disappointing one.

M3: An incremental performance upgrade

The M3 chip was the first 3nm Mac chip–a process introduced with the A17 Pro in the iPhone 15 Pro. The 3nm process allows for increased transistor density that can translate into better performance power efficiency.

While the M3 clearly offers an improvement over the M2 that was produced with an enhanced 5nm process, we experience what is usually accepted as an incremental performance boost of 15 to 20 percent. While any boost is good, 15 to 20 percent isn’t eye-popping.

To be fair, Apple doesn’t highlight the 3nm process as the main reason for improved performance. But while Apple did show how much the M3 is faster than the M2 at its  Scary Fast M3 launch event , the company emphasized the M3’s 30 percent CPU boost and 60 percent Neural Engine improvement  over the M1 . Of course, that’s mostly because, at the time, it was easier to persuade customers to upgrade from a three-year-old M1 chip than a 16-month-old M2, but when deciding which numbers to showcase, it’s a no-brainer.

So, the lack of a better-than-average jump didn’t help the M3, marketing-wise. Even in a historical sense, it stands in the shadow of the M1, a chip that had the benefit of being first and exceeding expectations with huge gains over the Intel models it replaced.

M3 Performance cores

The M3 provides an incremental boost over its predecessor, the M2.

 width=

M3: Cycle cut short

When Apple released the M3, it decided to change its release cycle. Instead of shipping the base M-series chip first, followed by Pro, Max, and Ultra versions at a later time (as it did with the M1 and M2), the M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max were released at the same time.

That added welcomed consistency to Apple’s Mac lineup. However, until this past Sunday, the M3 cycle was still in progress, with M3 upgrades to the Mac mini, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro supposedly waiting in the wings. But if an M4 iPad Pro is revealed, it appears for all intents and purposes that the M3 is done.

In a  report  two weeks ago, Mark Gurman reported on the M4 Mac release schedule, which starts this fall with the M4 14-inch MacBook Pro and iMac this fall and continues through the end of the year and into 2025 with M4 releases in other Macs. However, the current Mac mini, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro have M2 chips, and it was thought that Apple could still release M3 versions. But if Apple does release an M4 iPad Pro, then it doesn’t make sense to proceed with any new M3 machines–it’ll just add confusion to the lineup.

That means that we’ll see the Mac mini, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro skip a chip cycle. That’s not new to Apple; the company skipped the M2 for the iMac, and never released an M1 Mac Pro. But what this could cause is a hiccup in Mac sales, because customers who planned on investing in these three Macs will have to wait a bit longer.

Mac Studio and Mac Pro

If the M4 iPad Pro is “let loose” next week, then it seems likely that Apple will not upgrade the M2-based Mac Studio and Mac Studio this year.

 width=

Thiago Trevisan

M3: Untapped potential

Not long ago, we heard reports that the M4 would not be available until next year., so it’s a little difficult to believe that the M4 is ready to ship. Even Daring Fireball’s John Gruber has  doubts  about an M4 iPad Pro. But Gurman is often (but not always) accurate with his reporting and has repeatedly reported that Apple has a sense of AI urgency. The company is feeling pressure and wants to “let loose” in a big way.

If Apple does ship an M4 iPad Pro, it’s the end of the M3. There’s no reason to mourn it–it’s just a chip. But for Apple fans who follow the company’s technological advancements, the abrupt end of the M3 cycle is a reminder of the nature of technology–  progress happens quickly and sometimes suddenly. The M3 won’t be remembered for any remarkable advancements, and some may even see the M3 as a sign of how Apple was caught off-guard by the rapid rise of AI. That may end up being the chip’s legacy.

Apple event

Apple promoting may 7 keynote as a ‘different kind of apple event’.

Avatar for Filipe Espósito

As you may know by now, Apple will be holding a special event on May 7 to announce new iPads. The event will be pre-recorded just like other Apple events. However, the company is now promoting its upcoming keynote as a “different kind of Apple Event.”

Apple to hold a different kind of event next week

As noted by The Apple Post , the company has been promoting its “Let Loose” event on social networks such as Instagram and Facebook. Interestingly, the message in the ads says that Apple is “drafting up something special for you” and invites people to attend a “different kind of Apple Event” on May 7.

Although the “drafting up” part could be another reference to iPads (since the event artwork itself features an Apple Pencil), it’s unclear what the company means by a “different kind” of event.

Apple doesn’t typically hold events in May, especially since it’s only a month before WWDC. This next event will also be held at 7 a.m. PT, whereas typically Apple events start at 10 a.m. PT. But is that enough to say that this event will be different from others?

Top comment by Hazen

Previously when they came out with the Magic Keyboard it required a software update/announcement video as they designed a ‘new’ cursor system for the trackpad. If the new iPads have any features specific to the new releases, I can see them breaking off the iPadOS announcement from WWDC and then at WWDC they’ll just do a quick recap.

Last year, the company actually held a rather atypical event in October , which began at 5 p.m. PT and lasted only 30 minutes. On that occasion, the company introduced new Macs the day before Halloween. It was also the first keynote to be filmed entirely with an iPhone . Will the next one be filmed and edited on the iPad? I guess we won’t have the answers until next week.

On a related note, Apple has also added a countdown to the event on its Newsroom webpage .

What to expect

Apple is rumored to be introducing a new generation iPad Pro with OLED displays and powered by the M4 chip. iPad Air will also get a hardware upgrade with the M2 chip and a new 12.9-inch version. Accessories such as the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil are also expected to get new versions.

Of course, 9to5Mac will have full coverage of everything Apple announces next Tuesday.

Ios 18—new apple overhaul reveals exciting iphone ai privacy feature.

Apple’s soon-to-launch iOS 18 software could include an exciting AI-based privacy feature as part of an overhaul of the Safari browser. The new iPhone feature, dubbed Web Eraser, allows you to browse the web while removing portions of the page, such as ads or other content you don’t want to see.

Web Eraser comes as part of a wider AI-based browser overhaul in iOS 18, according to Apple-focused website Apple Insider , which first reported the news.

Apple’s soon-to-launch iOS 18 software could include an exciting AI based privacy feature as part of ... [+] an overhaul of the Safari browser.

Currently being tested by the iPhone maker, the overhaul includes the advanced content blocking features enabled by Web Eraser, as well as UI tweaks and AI-powered Intelligent Search. The changes to Safari will be included in iOS 18 and macOS 15, according to the report, which cites “people familiar with the matter.”

What Web Eraser Does In iOS 18

From the looks of it, Web Eraser in iOS 18 is a pretty cool feature, building on privacy tools already built into the iPhone maker’s Safari browser. Specifically, it's “designed to allow users to remove, or erase, specific portions of web pages,” including banner ads, images, text or entire page sections.

Hundreds of Russian Troops Gathered Out In The Open. They Didn’t Know The Ukrainians Had Aimed Four ATACMS Rockets At Them.

Apparently, Safari will remember your preferences so they aren’t limited to one specific browsing session. “When visiting a web page with previously erased content, Safari will inform the user that the page has been modified to reflect their desired changes. The browser will also give the user the option to revert changes and restore the webpage to its initial, unaltered state,” Apple Insider writes.

The new controls will be easy to access in the Safari Settings menu.

Exciting New iOS 18 Features Coming Soon

Web Eraser comes alongside multiple new AI-based iOS 18 features for your iPhone, most of which will be processed on the device , at least initially.

It looks like Intelligent Search will use Apple’s large language model Ajax to identify topics and key phrases within a web page.

Essentially, Web Eraser in iOS 18 is an ad blocking feature as offered by many companies, but it’s built into the Safari browser. It’s a great move for privacy—and ease of use since it’s ready made. However, it could create problems for publishers, who rely on web ads for their business revenue.

Apple of course, values privacy as one of its key marketing messages and iOS 18 seems to embrace that ethos wholeheartedly. Apple’s new iPhone operating system will launch in just over a month at its Worldwide Developers Conference and there’s a lot to look forward to for privacy-conscious users.
