This boot will definitely keep you warm and dry, and it's one of the better boots to get if you have box toes, but you will definitely notice that the soles on this boot aren't Vibram soles. They're great in normal conditions, but I found that traction was quite bad on rocky debris and rock trails covered with light snow or mud.

In the U.K. these boots are classed as "4 Season" i.e. they can take a crampon for ice-walking up in the mountains. I have an older pair which have day-glo attachment points for crampons--really cool! Without a doubt, they are the best boots I have ever used. Fantastic.

Materials : Nu-buck uppers Use : 4 Season Break-in Period : None Weight : Unknown Price Paid: £109

salomon pro trek 7 gtx

The best boots I've ever owned. Breaking time was zero and they lasted me through 2 tree-planting seasons. For the non-planters out there, that's twice as much as a normal "heavy" backpacking boot. Very tough and comfy, a perfect balance of strength and weight.

Materials : suede Use : rough trails, rocky bushwacks, heavy pack Break-in Period : zero Price Paid: 130$

Very disappointed!!

Had my Salomons for a few years, but only done about 20 days of hiking in them and the soles came apart from the upper. I'll never buy another pair of Salomons again.

Boot Review: Salomon Pro Trek 6 GTX

A well valued boot, great of every level of hiking..

“Waterproof and affordable, great for everything from rugged dayhikes to major off-trail epics,” says our tester after a jaunt through Yellowstone. Break-in is almost instant, ankle and underfoot support superb even on crumbly terrain, and durability top-notch, thanks to details like a thick rubber rand. His only wish: Better cushion for pounding out trail miles. For summer use, check out the nonwaterproof Pro Trek 5 ($100). Best for medium to wide feet.

Gear Review: Salomon XA Pro 3D CS WP Trail Runners

According to Appalachian Trials’ Appalachian Trail Footwear by the Numbers  post, Salomon is the most popular brand seen on the trail- and it’s for good reason. Salomon has a great warranty and product. Since my thru-hike and the years after, I have owned six pairs of Salomon trail shoes (some waterproof, some just breathable mesh).

I recently had the opportunity to test out their latest and upgraded model of the  XA Pro 3D CS WP trail shoes . For clarity, Salomon offers a variety of shoes with this stylistic look. The difference varies on design and more noticeably on the waterproofing: breathable mesh, Gore Tex, or Climashield. I have worn all three. The breathable mesh is perfect for summer. I did not notice a difference in the effectiveness of the waterproofing when Gore Tex and Climashield are compared. However, both waterproofing did tend to wear after months of consecutive wear. More differences from the earlier models will be discussed in this review.

Check out my review of Salomon’s previous models,  Salomon’s XA PRO 3D Ultra 2 & XA PRO 3D ULTRA 2 GTX Trail Runners .

This review will focus on the Salomon XA Pro 3D CS WP , waterproofed with Climashield. This pair of shoes are marketed by Salomon as shoes that are designed for “control, durability, and weather protection.”

  • Men’s: 1 lb 12 oz average pair weight*
  • Weight when I weighed the pair: 13 oz for one shoe, 1 lb 8 oz for the pair
  • *These weights were found online and don’t make much sense to me. Maybe it’s for one shoe, not the pair?

Salomon’s Warranty:

Salomon has a fabulous warranty and is willing to help out thru-hikers. Typically, Salomon will replace your shoes if there is damage under 400 miles. Visit  this link to learn more about Salomon’s length warranty plan.

Test Subject & Area:

Test subject size: 6.5

Test subject area: Colorado (Golden, Fort Collins, Estes Park, Boulder)

First Impression:

My first impression had everything to do with color. They definitely added a bit more pizzazz in the color scheme than the past models I have worn. And, I liked that. Don’t worry, they do still offer black, green, and gray. I also noticed Salomon moved toward a different, more bubbly font. However, upon first impression, I did not notice any difference in function or fit from the previous models I had owned. But, that’s how first impressions go. Spoiler alert: there is a functional difference.

My first hike in these shoes was not on a normal dirt trail. The trail was extremely snow-packed and icy. In my review of the previous models, I had mentioned that the grip needed to be broken in a bit to function very well on ice or wet rock. I figured I would be sliding all around because I had yet to break in the grip. However, the grip worked great on the snow, ice, and sludge. I actually was faster than my hiking partners because of how well they functioned. Thanks Contagrip, you’re alright.

20150316_141839

I will always and forever love Salomon’s Quicklace lacing system. I never have to stop to tie my shoes or tighten the laces. I know some people have had trouble with the lace system whether it be from them breaking or causing holes in the shoe’s tongue. I have had four Salomon shoes with the Quicklace system and I have yet to experience any error.

Hikers new to the Quicklace system: Please don’t forget to TUCK YOUR EXCESS LACE INTO THE TONGUE POCKET after you tighten and cinch the laces.

IMG_1017

I’ve circled the little pouch on the tongue where the excess laces live.

Added Midsole Material

This is it! This is it! It took some serious examination skills but I figured it out! The added midsole material is the functional difference between the earlier models of the shoe and this newer model. The midsole is the material between the footbed and the outersole. The previous models only had molded EVA in the midsole. This model has molded EVA AND 3D Advanced Chassis. Disregard the silly material names. The EVA is a foam-like material while the Chassis is a hard plastic-like material. The one thing I noticed in my older models was that after some wear, the midsole (EVA foam) started to look “scrunched” from all the pressure of hiking. The newer model’s addition of the harder Chassis material looks like it will reduce the “scrunching” and keep the midsole in better condition.

The silver on the top shoe is the Chassis versus the older model on the bottom, which is nearly all EVA.

The silver in the midsole on the top shoe is the Chassis versus the older model on the bottom, which is nearly all EVA.

Toe Protection

I had mentioned toe protection as a pro in my previous review as well and Salomon did not let me down in this model either. The toe is protected with a hard toe cap. This hard toe cap has saved my toes from many bangs and bumps against hard rocks.

IMG_1016

The Climashield waterproofing is top notch. During my super snowy hike that I mentioned above, I also ended up dunking my entire foot into a deep cold puddle. My foot remained dry and I just kept on hiking like nothing happened. If that’s not perfect waterproofing then I don’t know what is. I enjoy a good waterproof shoe and have tried GoreTex shoes and Climashield. They both function beautifully. This model does come in GoreTex waterproofing; that shoe is called the XA Pro 3D GTX .

However, if you are hiking in the summer, waterproof shoes can get real hot. Luckily, this model also comes without waterproofing. It is simply called the XA Pro 3D (this pair is also cheaper than the waterproof pair).

Needs Breaking In

As in my previous review, this model, the XA Pro 3D CS WP trail runners, does need to be broken in because the shoe is a bit stiff. If you like the stiffness of a boot, this actually might not be an issue for you. For me, the problem with the stiffness is more prevalent around the ankle. The stiffness at this part of the shoe caused me to have some rubbing/irritation at the ankle and back of the heel.

However, from my experience, continuous wear does loosen the fabric and the stiffness is not longer an issue.

This Salomon model is somewhat like a hybrid between a boot and shoe. The sole is thick, the toe box is thick, and the look is sort of wide and boxy. This is the only issue I have with the style of the XA Pro 3D CS WP Trail Runners. Although I have done many technical hikes with this shoe with zero problems, the shoe does hinder my utilization of small cracks during scrambling/bouldering/climbing.

Yeah, yeah I just talked up the laces in the pros section but you must be aware that these laces are hard to replace if they were to break, making the laces a con as well.

The Ortholite insole really isn’t the best. It does not offer much support for long distance treks. However, I have never had a problem when it comes to week long benders or weekend outings.

Comparison to Previous Models

Here you can see my lovely Salomon shoe collection. Sadly, I no longer have my pair without waterproofing. The magenta pink pair is the newest model. This is just to show the design difference; you can even see a design difference between the two older models as well.

Rating System

Based on my own experience, I have rated these shoes on a 1-5 scale, 5 being the best rating.

I give the comfort a 4 because of the Ortholite insole and the irritation I experienced around the ankle and heel from the stiffness.

Speed & Efficiency: 4

This shoe is referenced as a trail runner. However, running in this shoe is just too heavy and bulky. However, hiking in the shoe is fabulous. Like I said, I was a faster hiker in slippery, icy terrain because of these shoes. Therefore, I only knocked a point off.

Traction: 5

Five for traction is a definite. I was pleasantly surprised at how well the shoe held up in the snow. There was no slipping. I had the confidence to take less careful steps in the ice and snow because of how well the traction worked for me.

Durability: 4.5

With the improved midsole, thick toe box, and amazing grip, I give the durability a great score. I did base the score on my past experience with the previous models. I have no doubt that this pair will take me through hundreds of miles of trail. I did take a half point off because some hikers have had issues with the laces (sigh).

This is NOT a cheap shoe. You are truly paying for the design and function. Suggested retail is $145. However, I have seen discounted pairs online for about $115 . I kept the score high because many quality hiking shoes and boots hover around this price AND Salomon’s warranty is great.

OVERALL RATING: 4.4 out of 5

These are the upgraded version of mine that are so close to death! Thanks for the review =] I do like the waterproof feature. Mine still dry quite quickly even if they do get wet inside. Anyone know if there’s a real difference between the CS and GTX?

salomon pro trek 7 gtx

I’m glad you liked the review Marietta! Now, I’ve tried the waterproofing with Climashield (CS) and with GoreTex (GTX). To be honest, I really did not experience a difference in quality. They both worked fabulous for more for hundreds of miles and many trips and day hikes. AND, they both lost their effectiveness slightly over time after hundreds of more miles. During my research, I came across some people claiming that CS is warmer or GTX dries faster, etc but I never found a true answer to the difference. In my experience with both, there is no real difference.

Thanks! Maybe I’ll just go with the GTX since that’s what I had before? I’m also excited about the new colors! Much better than the generic light ones from the earlier models

For sure! If it worked for you before then I wouldn’t change a thing! Omg right? I was sooo excited to see more color. 😀

salomon pro trek 7 gtx

My wife just picked up the exact pair, for the reason that she loves that color combination. One problem we’re experiencing is the noise, which seems to be coming from the mesh rubbing against the waterproofing membrane. It sounds like you’re constantly stepping on a pile of wrapping paper. Did you experience something similar? If you did, does that noise go away?

Thanks! -Jason

Salomon XA Pro 3D V9 GTX Review

Salomon’s crossover shoe mixes traits from both low-top hikers and trail runners, making it an enticing choice for fast-and-light adventures.

Salomon XA Pro 3D V9 GTX

Price: $160 Weight: 1 lb. 9.4 oz. (men’s) Waterproof: Yes (Gore-Tex) What we like: Far less compromised in terms of durability and protection than most trail runners—great for fast-and-light hiking over technical terrain. What we don’t: Too bulky and stiff for most trail runners; polarizing lacing system. See the Men's XA Pro 3D V9 GTX    See the Women's XA Pro 3D V9 GTX

Salomon is one of the biggest and most respected names in outdoor footwear, with an extensive lineup that spans the road running, trail running, and hiking categories. The XA Pro 3D, now in its 9th iteration, slots in as a crossover design—a shoe that’s built for technical trail running but that works well for fast-and-light hiking. We put the latest version to the test in rugged Chilean Patagonia and came away with mixed feelings: The XA Pro 3D isn’t the most modern design and lacks the plush comfort of many of our favorite trail runners, but it fills a nice gap for those looking for a traditional hiking shoe experience while keeping weight to a minimum. Below we break down the XA Pro 3D’s performance. To see how it stacks up to the competition, check out our articles on the best hiking shoes and best trail running shoes .

Comparison Table

The competition, performance.

Although designated as a trail runner, many people use the Salomon XA Pro 3D for hiking, and we can see why. The shoe is relatively firm underfoot, but the trade-off is a solid connection with the ground. Coming from the thick Hoka Anacapa 2 Low GTX, which I was also testing in Patagonia, the XA Pro felt pretty natural in terms of stack height (28.7mm at the heel and 17.3mm at the forefoot) and overall form factor, making it an easy shoe to get to know quickly. And I appreciated the soft and well-padded tongue, which does a nice job preventing pressure points from the single-pull Quicklace system (more on the latter below). All told, the shoes were a great match for my testing itinerary, which included short (4- to 5-mile) and technical trail runs, two big day hikes with significant climbing, and substantial time off-trail.

Salomon XA Pro 3D V9 (putting on shoes above lake)

However, compared to more modern trail runners that cross over into the fast-and-light hiking world (like the popular Altra Lone Peak), the XA Pro 3D feels notably dated. In particular, I found the shoe to be relatively spartan and unpolished along the interior—akin to running shoes of old. Further, if you’re used to the integrated tongue that you get with some of Salomon’s other running models, including the Sense Ride 5, you might be disappointed with the XA Pro’s detached design, which adds bulk and makes the shoe less streamlined overall. For a sleeker, softer, and more modern design for hiking, we’d recommend a shoe like the aforementioned Lone Peak or Hoka’s plush Speedgoat 5 (both of which are lighter and sprightlier for trail running, too). But if you’re after the classic feel of a stable trail runner or firm hiking shoe, the XA Pro 3D fits the bill.

Salomon XA Pro 3D V9 (Ortholite insole)

On the protection scale, the XA Pro 3D V9 is closer to a hiking shoe than a minimalist trail runner . The rubber toe cap is relatively large and burly and effectively shielded the front of my foot from several direct rock kicks. It’s a similar story underfoot, although the lack of cushion did result in some foot soreness after long days on the trail. It’s also worth noting that the top of the foot (which is comprised mostly of mesh) is pretty vulnerable to tears and snags from trail obstacles—when testing the past-generation model, a root easily abraded our tester’s skin through the toe box. But overall, the XA Pro 3D offers far better assurance than lighter and more streamlined options like the Lone Peak or Speedgoat.

Salomon XA Pro 3D V9 (toe protection)

With a listed weight of 1 pound 9.4 ounces per pair for the men’s Gore-Tex version, the XA Pro 3D is lighter than many low-top hikers but heavier than its trail running competition. For comparison, Altra’s Lone Peak 8, which has similar crossover appeal, weighs 1 pound 5.4 ounces (the waterproof version is heavier at 1 lb. 10.4 oz.), although you do give up a fair bit of protection with such a lightweight build. Other versatile designs including the Hoka Speedgoat 5 (1 lb. 4.6 oz.), Brooks Cascadia 17 (1 lb. 6 oz.), and La Sportiva Ultra Raptor II (1 lb. 9 oz.) also undercut the XA Pro 3D in weight. On the other hand, the Salomon is lighter than traditional hiking models including the more durable and protective Merrell Moab 3 WP (1 lb. 10.1 oz.) and Oboz Sawtooth X Low WP (2 lb. 1.8 oz.).

The XA Pro 3D V9’s in-house Contagrip rubber outsole was serviceable on our trip to Patagonia but nothing to write home about. Coming from shoes with tacky Vibram Megagrip rubber (like Hoka’s Anacapa 2 Low and Mid), the difference was immediately noticeable: The XA Pro 3D didn’t stick as effectively to rock, was more prone to sliding, and had minimal bite in loose dirt and mud due to the relatively short lugs. The rubber is pretty tough and has withstood rough use without any signs of excessive wear, but it’s not as grippy as I’d prefer for a do-everything shoe.

Salomon XA Pro 3D V9 (traction closeup)

Continuing the trend, the XA Pro 3D V9 feels moderately stable for a trail runner but offers less support than a true hiking shoe . In particular, the heel is sturdy enough to feel solid when navigating tricky terrain without growing squirrely or unstable. I found the Brooks Cascadia 17 easier to trust on rough and off-camber ground, but the Salomon nevertheless is a tough shoe that doesn’t feel overly floppy when boulder-hopping or edging down loose terrain. Overall, the design should work well for most trails and carrying loads of 35 pounds or less, but I’d recommend upgrading to a stiffer shoe or full-on hiking boot for extended treks or when shuttling a heavy pack.

Salomon XA Pro 3D V9 (hiking up steep rock)

Waterproofing

I tested the waterproof version of the XA Pro 3D V9, which boasts a proven Gore-Tex membrane for sealing out moisture. As expected, the shoes kept my feet perfectly dry in swampy conditions that included walking across long sections of soft, wet moss and through shallow puddles and pools. That said, not everyone will want to opt for the waterproof version: As with any low-top shoe, you always run the risk of water entering over the ankle, and breathability and drying time suffer as a result of the waterproof barrier. If you care more about the latter two, it’s worth saving $20 with the non-waterproof version of the XA Pro 3D.

Breathability

The XA Pro 3D isn’t a standout in the breathability department, but it’s about average for a waterproof design. With temperatures reaching into the 80s Fahrenheit during our trip to Patagonia, my feet grew pretty warm in the black pair I was wearing. But still, that heat was entirely manageable. The shoes also did a decent job drying off after wear—they dried noticeably faster than the thicker and cushioned Hoka Anacapa 2 Mid boots I was testing alongside the XA Pro 3D. However, as we noted above, the non-waterproof XA Pro 3D will both ventilate better and dry quicker than the Gore-Tex model.

Salomon XA Pro 3D V9 (closeup of upper)

Salomon is a class leader when it comes to designing quality outdoor footwear, and the XA Pro 3D V9 is a testament to their expertise. Unlike lighter-weight models like the Altra Lone Peak and Hoka Speedgoat, the XA Pro 3D feels notably less compromised and delivers impressive durability that should hold up much longer to regular trail use. More specifically, the reinforced upper offers almost comprehensive protection from tears (minus right over the forefoot), and the burly sole and toe cap won’t wear out as quickly as these more minimalist models. To be sure, mesh will abrade and wear down faster than the highly durable leather found on many hiking shoes, but the XA Pro 3D is impressively hardwearing considering its intentions.

Salomon XA Pro 3D V9 (holding shoe up)

Salomon’s Quicklaces

The XA Pro 3D V9 utilizes Salomon’s signature Quicklace system, which is a modern and more minimalist take on traditional laces. How it works: Pull on the rubberized end and push the plastic tab towards your foot to tighten, then reverse the process to loosen (it’s also simple to loosen with one hand by pulling up on the tab). In practice, I’ve found it’s easy to use, evenly snugs the laces around my foot (all the way down to the toes), and is reasonably quick and secure. The design is also sturdy and long-lasting—I haven’t had Quicklaces break or fail in a very long time.

That said, this isn’t my favorite application of the Quicklace system. Most annoyingly, the XA Pro 3D’s tongue gapes a lot when you store the laces and plastic tab in the underside pocket. It was enough of a problem that I opted to not use the pocket because of all the debris it invited into the top of my shoe. Instead, I secured the tab over the top of the tongue and the laces midway down the shoe, which left them vulnerable to brush that occasionally caught while walking. I also needed to retighten the laces more frequently than with a standard lacing setup, which only added to my dislike of the system. In the end, these won’t be dealbreakers for everyone, but they definitely detracted from the shoes’ overall performance for me.

Salomon XA Pro 3D V9 (Salomon's Quicklace system)

I purchased my usual men’s size 9 in the Salomon XA Pro 3D and found the fit to be spot-on. Despite having narrow heels, I was able to get a good heel lock for steep climbs with the laces cinched tight, and the width felt average with a just-right amount of room in the toe box. For those with higher-volume feet, Salomon offers the shoe in dedicated wide sizes for men (both in waterproof and non-waterproof styles), although the women’s collection only includes the standard width.

Sustainability

Like many leading outdoor brands, Salomon has started employing more sustainable production practices, including the use of recycled materials. In this case, the XA Pro 3D V9 is made with 35% recycled content, although Salomon doesn’t specify which components fit the bill. And there’s certainly room for improvement—Hoka’s Anacapa that I was testing alongside the XA Pro uses bio-based materials for the liner and midsole—but we nevertheless applaud Salomon for boosting the shoe’s sustainability focus with the latest update.

Other Versions of the Salomon XA Pro 3D v9

We tested the men’s Gore-Tex version of the XA Pro 3D V9 for this review, which retails for $160. The shoe also comes in a non-waterproof version ($140) for men, which retains most of the same features and overall design but forgoes the Gore-Tex membrane for a boost in breathability and a small (2.6 oz.) drop in weight. For women, Salomon makes the XA Pro 3D in both non-waterproof (1 lb. 5.2 oz.) and Gore-Tex versions (1 lb. 6.2 oz.), which come in women’s-specific fits and colorways. As we touched on above, only the men’s versions are offered in wide sizes.

Salomon XA Pro 3D V9 (carrying shoes)

What We Like

  • Considerably more durable and protective than many modern trail runners that cross over for hiking.
  • Although relatively firm underfoot, the shoe offers a solid connection with the ground and is easy to trust on technical terrain.
  • At 1 pound 9.4 ounces per pair, the XA Pro 3D is lighter than many low-top hikers without feeling overly compromised.
  • The fit was spot-on for us, including a good heel lock for steep climbs and an average width with just enough room in the toe box.
  • Comes in both waterproof and non-waterproof versions, along with dedicated wide sizes for men.

What We Don’t

  • A true tweener: heavier and stiffer than most trail runners and not as durable or stable as low-top hiking shoes.
  • This isn’t our favorite application of Salomon’s Quicklace system: Storing the laces and plastic tab in the pocket invited unwanted debris into the shoe, and the laces required retightening throughout the day.
  • Despite being recently updated, the design still feels dated: The interior is fairly rough, and the cushioning isn’t bouncy and plush like many modern trail runners.
  • Contagrip outsole isn’t as grippy as we’d prefer for a do-everything shoe.
  • The top of the foot is comprised mostly of mesh and vulnerable to tears and snags from roots and other trail obstacles.

The Salomon XA Pro 3D falls in a growing category of crossover shoes: running shoe-inspired designs that are popular for fast-and-light missions. In this category, the Altra Lone Peak is a real standout and one of the most popular options among thru-hikers and fastpackers. Recently updated to the “8,” the Lone Peak is lighter than the XA Pro 3D at 1 pound 5.4 ounces (1 lb. 10.4 oz. with waterproofing ), with a more minimalist design that translates to a softer and more flexible ride (at the cost of durability and protection). The Lone Peak also uses a traditional lacing system that’s easier to customize and Altra’s signature zero-drop shape, which offers a wildly different trail feel than the Salomon’s 11-millimeter drop. In the end, we’d recommend the Lone Peak for most moderate trails, while the more protective and stiffer XA Pro 3D wins out on rugged terrain.

Salomon XA Pro 3D V9 (while shot while hiking)

We’d be remiss not to mention the Brooks Cascadia here, which is now in its 17th iteration. Both the Salomon and Brooks are running designs that have become popular among the thru-hiking crowd, but the Cascadia 17 is lighter (1 lb. 6 oz. for the non-waterproof version; 1 lb. 7.4 oz. with Gore-Tex) and much more streamlined than the XA Pro 3D. That said, it still offers decent protection and features a rock plate in the outsole, which makes it fairly capable on rough terrain—capable enough that I prefer it over the Salomon on rough and off-camber ground, although the XA Pro is no slouch. Overall, we’d break it down as follows: The Brooks is the better trail runner and crosses over well for hiking, while the Salomon works best as a dedicated hiking shoe .

Next up is another crossover option that was quick to impress: La Sportiva’s Ultra Raptor II . Billed as a mountain running shoe, we’re big fans of the design for hikers venturing above treeline on rugged trails or cross-country terrain. Highlights include top-notch protection against rocks and roots by way of generous toe and heel caps and a full-length rock plate, along with incredible grip and ample cushion for all-day wear. Like the Salomon, the Ultra Raptor is relatively stiff and clunky for trail running, and the rigid TPU heel counter may cause discomfort for some. But overall, it’s an incredibly capable shoe for technical mountain travel and gets our vote over the XA Pro 3D as the better crossover design (for more, see our in-depth Ultra Raptor review ). Of note: There’s also a Gore-Tex version available for $195.

Salomon XA Pro 3D V9 (closeup from side)

Last but not least are two shoes from Salomon’s own lineup to consider: the Sense Ride 5 trail runner and X Ultra 4 GTX hiking shoe. In our opinion, both designs do a better job than the XA Pro in their respective categories: The Sense Ride is much softer and more comfortable for trail running, has a lighter (1 lb. 4.2 oz.) and more agile build, and is equally at home on easy trails as it is on technical cross-country terrain. For dedicated hiking and lightweight backpacking, the X Ultra 4 is considerably more cushioned and capable with better protection and a more modern-feeling interior. It’s a little heavier than the XA Pro 3D at 1 pound 11.5 ounces per pair but has a very agile—yet entirely stable—feel. In the end, we’d point trail runners to the Sense Ride and hikers to the X Ultra, but the XA Pro 3D fills a nice gap between the two for those who don’t mind the stiffer and less forgiving platform.

7 Best Salomon Trail Running Shoes in 2024

Jens Jakob Andersen

If you want to venture into the great outdoors, it’s unquestioned - Salomon is THE brand for trail runners.

Salomon trail shoes are not only extremely durable — they’re ready to eat up the gnarly terrain. Whether it’s a grippy, waterproof, supportive, or protective shoe you’re after, these trail runners won’t disappoint you.

Choosing out of the many Salomon trail shoes can take forever. And we literally owned the job to make everything easy-breezy for you. We have exhaustively tested trail running shoes from Salomon and evaluated which ones are worth your time and money. From different categories, we’ve handpicked shoes we’re confident can swallow miles on the trails.

Salomon Speedcross 6

How we test trail running shoes

Your browser does not support the video tag.

Because we dislike marketing fluff so much, we buy the Salomon trail shoes we test with our own money. This allows us to be as transparent as possible.

And because we like to nitpick so much, we also take the time to do the following:

  • Run in each shoe for 30-50 miles. We take them to rail trails, hiking trails, backpacking trails, bridle paths, and others just to thoroughly assess the shoes in different settings.
  • Slice them into pieces in our own shoe testing lab . Not a single detail can hide from us. We gotta see all the components of the shoes, may they be large or tiny.
  • Measure them via 30 different parameters like flexibility, strength, breathability, etc. We then interpret the results in a simple and understandable manner, for the reader's easy consumption.

Best Salomon trail running shoes overall

Salomon Speedcross 6

What makes it the best?

Speedcross 6 ranked first among Salomon trail running shoes in our lab and actual trail runs because of its exceptional grip, supportive platform, and flexible build. It enhances our agility and stimulates fast-paced adventures. We find it very well-suited for muddy encounters and cold weather.

Starting from the bottom, Speedcross 6 has the highly-trusted Contagrip compound for its outsole. On foot, it feels very protective and durable as confirmed by our 93.9 HC durometer measurement. This is one of the highest readings we've recorded. To ensure traction, it has 5.8 mm deep lugs, widely spaced for shedding off dirt. This is 2.3 mm deeper than average, which gives a stronger bite on muddy terrains.

The midsole feels firm, enhancing ground sensitivity. Our durometer registers a 34.4 HA measurement, 28.8% tougher than average. This improves our sense of balance by keeping us steady even on sharp turns. It flares out in the heel for extra support while the insole is curved so that our feet are inside the midsole, not on top of it.

Thankfully, the ride doesn’t feel rigid and uncomfortable. In our bend test, Speedcross stands 40.1% more flexible than average. This makes it comfortable enough for longer trail runs and even walks.

What feels uncomfortable is wearing this pair in warm weather. With its impenetrable upper, we gave it a low 1/5 on our lab breathability test.

  • Superior traction on wet, technical trails
  • Ideal for heel strikers
  • Impressive durability
  • Quick mud shedding ability
  • Lightest Speedcross yet
  • Secure lockdown with QuickLace system
  • Enhanced ground feel in the forefoot
  • Agile and responsive in fast corners
  • Midsole feels like concrete
  • Extremely poor breathability
  • Not suitable for midfoot and forefoot strikers

Best Salomon trail shoes for daily running

Salomon Pulsar Trail

The Salomon Pulsar Trail is a tremendously great all-around trail running shoe that’s capable of doing most, if not all, trail runs. We put it through a ton of different distances and terrains and it was absolutely amazing. It is a grippy and durable, speedy and light trail shoe that sits at the top of the pile for the best Salomon trail running shoes for daily running.

The Salomon Pulsar Trail, with its Contagrip outsole, is extremely durable and grippy. It gave us confidence when running on trails, even when on more technical trails. We’ve run our fair share of trails in these shoes and it remains unscathed. In fact, these shoes are going strong with no signs of premature damage.

Running fast in the Pulsar Trail comes almost naturally. It is very energetic and we loved it because it did not turn out to be yet another dull trail shoe. We felt like we were being propelled forward, thanks to its rocker design.

Even with a firm but protective midsole, the Pulsar Trail remains lighter than we expected it to be. In fact, it feels almost weightless even on longer trail runs.

The Pulsar trail has a plush upper but it is not very breathable. Runners looking for a summer-ready trail shoe might want to look elsewhere.

  • Stable and protective ride
  • Versatile for occasional road use
  • Enhanced heel lockdown
  • Robust durability
  • Suitable for all footstrikes
  • Good breathability in the toebox
  • Fairly priced at £140
  • Not suitable for wet terrain
  • Slightly on the heavier side

Best Salomon road-to-trail running shoes

Salomon Sense Ride 5

Salomon’s Sense Ride 5 delivers a seamless shift from the streets to beaten paths without ruining our momentum. It’s got the grip for moderate trails, a soft cushion for protection and a flexible platform that keeps us agile. This makes it our top road-to-trail shoe from Salomon’s trail lineup.

This hybrid shoe handles daily mileage to occasional speedwork with ease. Its Contagrip rubber outsole and 3.5 mm diamond-shaped lugs work wonders on slightly wet surfaces and moderate trails. We have no worries transitioning to a different pavement as SR5 keeps us steady.

Running many miles won’t be a problem with the protective foam, which our durometer measured to be 25.2% softer than the average trail shoe. It holds a below-average stack, keeping a low-to-the-ground profile, which is ideal for trail shoes. Combined with a flexible platform, we feel more in control as the unopposing midsole flows with our movements. Our flex test confirms the SR5 falls around the average of trail shoes.

The forefoot stack is 5.7 mm thinner than average, meaning there’s less foam to absorb the landing impact of midfoot-to-forefoot strikers.

  • Immaculate lockdown
  • Good responsiveness
  • Plenty of ground feel
  • Confident on moderate trails and steep downhills
  • Smooth and stable ride
  • Can hold its own for speedwork
  • Comfy and breathable upper
  • Best for daily miles, longer efforts, and even road runs!
  • Forget about hard trails
  • Thin under forefoot
  • Runs a little bit narrow

Best Salomon trail shoes for running ultras

Salomon Ultra Glide 2

We glided through ultras in Salomon’s Ultra Glide 2. Its soft platform, light and flexible nature, and stable traction all work together to make endurance runs more bearable and enjoyable. Our lab and run testers agree this Salomon trail running shoe is best for ultras.

Running long hours on off the beaten paths isn't a problem with UG2’s cloud-like nature — soft and light. It oozes a heavenly sensation that protects our legs from fatigue. Our durometer measurement validates this: 34.3% softer than the average trail shoe. It’s lighter on the feet at 10.1 oz (286g) vs. the average 10.4 oz (296g). We could run fast without toppling over since its stack height sits below average, giving us a better ground feel.

Keeping us in control is its easy-to-maneuver midsole. We could move quickly on moderately technical trails as the shoe adapts to our movements. Counterchecking with our flex test, we confirm it’s 33.4% more flexible than average.

UG2 gives enough grip to perform well on different surfaces, performing best on dry surfaces and moderate trails. It has 2.8 mm lugs on its Contagrip rubber outsole, keeping our runs stable.

We recommend steering clear of hard, rocky terrains as the 1.6 mm outsole might not be thick and durable enough to protect our feet.

  • Breathable upper
  • One heck of a lockdown
  • Soft and protective cushioning
  • Good energy return
  • Very smooth, fun ride
  • Comfy for roads, good traction on moderately technical trails
  • Outstanding for daily miles and (very) long runs
  • Also works for faster efforts
  • Poor outsole durability
  • Using lace garage can get frustrating
  • Long tongue has a tendency to cause some rubbing
  • Maybe too narrow for some

Salomon trail running shoes with the best durability

Salomon XA Pro 3D v9 primary

The Salomon XA Pro 3D V9 has a robust and protective construction that can easily handle trail running, hiking, backpacking, and road running. Actual trail adventures and extensive lab tests show it has excellent defense all around, reliable grip, and sturdy support—making it our most durable Salomon trail running shoe.

The Contagrip outsole effortlessly dominates all types of surfaces. No need for tougher rubber and lug depth to enhance its performance. Despite having slightly below-average measurements of 83.1 HC and 2.8 mm, we had no issues with traction and premature wear on sand, snow, and rocks.

The firm midsole serves as another line of defense—shielding our feet from sharp debris and keeping the ride stable. Our durometer confirms it’s denser than the average trail shoe by 17.9%. The foam won't bottom out even if we’re loaded with heavy backpacks. The 3D chassis technology also protects us from excessive lateral movements that may lead to injuries.

The upper serves as our armor against both heat and debris. On our breathability test, it earned a remarkable 4/5, proving its ventilation. It also resisted impressively against our brutal Dremel, receiving a well-deserved 5/5.

Unfortunately, it was difficult to be fast and agile with its monstrous build. Tipping the scales to 12.2 oz (346g), it’s 1.8 oz (52g) heavier than the average trail shoe.

  • Tank-like foot protection
  • Incredibly stable and supportive ride
  • Excellent traction on mixed or rocky trails
  • Great hiking/backpacking companion
  • Relatively flexible despite 3D chassis
  • Effectively dampens landings
  • Generously padded and comfortable
  • No chance of lace bite
  • Durable and high-quality construction
  • Eye-catching design
  • A little heavy
  • Stiff upper needs breaking in
  • Cushioning on the firm side
  • Not nimble enough for technical trails

Best Salomon trail running shoes with Gore-Tex

Salomon Xa Pro 3D v9 GTX orimary

Our excursions reveal the XA Pro 3D v9 GTX is Salomon’s top Gore-Tex trail runner, and our lab results agree! It’s a well-designed and functional waterproof shoe offering steadfast all-around protection and unmatched stability through its 3D chassis.

Wrapped in the trusty Gore-Tex membrane, it has exceptional waterproofing. Our permeability test in the lab shows the smoke barely passed through—even the light was blocked out! In our trail runs, we had no troubles with rain, cold weather, and below-the-ankle river crossings.

This trail master also acts as a shield from various threats and obstacles. Aside from the solid upper, it has a robust toe bumper that acts as a rock plate. Underfoot, the firm midsole protects us from sharp rocks and roots and maintains our balance on uneven terrains. Further reinforcing stability is the 3D chassis that resists unwanted ankle twists and excessive lateral movements.

The ‘Contagrip’ outsole, along with the 2.8 mm deep lugs, deliver the defense and traction we need on most surfaces. It grips even wet rocks and loose sand thanks to its lug pattern.

Due to the protection it brings, this beefy monster is a hefty trail shoe. It rides like a hiking shoe, dragging us down during speedier runs. Our scales reveal its 12.7 oz (359g) weight is 22.1% heavier than average.

  • Incredibly protective
  • Extremely stable and supportive
  • Great traction even on wet surfaces
  • Watertight Gore-Tex upper
  • Flexible and forgiving on the foot
  • Makes a great hiking companion
  • Generously padded from heel to tongue
  • No lace bite whatsoever
  • Durable, high-quality construction
  • Simple yet snazzy design
  • Could be lighter
  • Rather firm cushioning
  • Upper needs breaking in
  • Lacks the agility for technical trails

Salomon XA Pro 3D GTX Trail Running Shoes Review

I have a bit of experience running around in trail running shoes, but the (deep breath) Salomon XA Pro 3D GTX was my first ever experience wearing the waterproof ones this company puts out (as well as in general).

Normally, I’ll wear regular Salomon trail running shoes (the Speedcross 3, 4 or 5) and waterproof socks, but I wanted to see just how amazing these ones were, so I stopped by a local outdoors store to test them out and in many ways, they really do deliver, but not so much that I’d put them above the tried and tested Speedcross, but this isn’t a comparison between them, it’s a review of the GTX version, so let’s get to it:

Salomon XA Pro 3D GTX Trail Running Shoes info:

Salomon Men's XA Pro 3D GTX Trail Running Shoes Review

  • Full name: Salomon Men’s XA Pro 3D Gore Tex Trail Running Shoes.
  • Company: Salomon.
  • Price: $150 (check pricing here).
  • Available colors: 5+ (see colors).
  • Is it really waterproof? Yes. If you’re fully submerged, your feet will get wet. However, the shoes won’t retain water.
  • Available for both men and women? Yes.
  • My rating: 4 out of 5.
  • Recommended? Yes. Generally speaking, these trail running shoes are excellent for most outdoor adventures and when you consider my rating, and others out there, here is what the average rating for them is across the board:

Disclaimer:  I’ve worn this pair of the Salomons for a short bit and haven’t properly tested them, but I feel confident in giving this review for several reasons:

  • I own 5+ pairs of Salomon trail running shoes (none of which are gore tex) and have hiked/ran over 200+ miles in them combined.
  • I have extensive experience in using this product and can easily see/feel how this specific model would perform.
  • I have also compiled ample research online of others who have used the Salomon Men’s XA Pro 3D GTX Trail Running Shoes for further reference/evidence.

Salomon XA Pro 3D pros:

  • Gore tex is the main feature to this (it really is waterproof).
  • Good resilience and reliability.
  • Good for hikes, trail runs and most off road/concrete running.
  • Pretty comfortable (depending on who you ask, for me it was fine).
  • High quality trail running shoe.
  • I’ve seen mixed reviews from users on this shoe.
  • Gore text is nice, but it might be a bit overrated (I’m perfectly fine with the Speedcross).
  • Like most other trail running shoes, these one’s “kryptonite” is likely wet wood and wet rocks.
  • It isn’t a cheap trail running shoe ($150).
  • I don’t see any need to wear this in dry weather regions (only where it’s wet/cold).

My first impressions of the Salomon XA Pro 3D GTX Trail Running Shoes:

first impressions of the Salomon Men's XA Pro 3D GTX Trail Running shoes

  • They are very comfortable.
  • They’re easy to walk around in.
  • Compared to the Speedcross, these ones feel a bit more “full”. I guess the extra layer of gore tex is to thank for this.

Until I put these shoes on, I had never worn any sort of trail running shoe with gore tex technology. I just wanted to feel what it was like and to be honest, the design of the shoe was not much different than what I had come to expect and feel from the Speedcross shoes I’d been wearing/using for years and that frankly is a compliment to this product because I am a loyal fan to these shoes.

And before I move further, let me say I have extensive reviews on my experiences with the existing Salomon trail running shoes I still own and happily wear for my hikes (Speedcross 3-5):

  • Here is my Salomon Speedcross 5 review (most updated version).

At the time I had “tested” the GTX shoes (I’m tired of repeating the never ending full name of this one), I had been on the fence about buying them or the Salomon Speedcross 5 (I elected with the latter and am happy I did that, but that’s a tale for later), and upon getting home and searching up more reviews for the GTX version, I had found some interesting information:

I also researched other Salomon XA Pro 3D reviews and here’s what I found:

Depending on which site you find these reviews on, you may get different views. There are 2 primary sources I had used to determine if I would buy these shoes, or just continue sticking to my Speedcross (and compiling a larger collection):

1) First up is Amazon. Most of the reviews are very positive (like my first impressions) and the rating is 4.5 out of 5, but some have mentioned a lower decline in quality and in (perhaps rare cases) defects. Having owned several Salomon products for years, including the Hydra 4 Trail Running vest , I am confident that most if not all Salomon products are top notch.

2) Second is the official Salomon site (and this is where it got interesting). With over 120 reviews, the average rating for this product is surprisingly a 3.5 out of 5 (not overly positive basically) and reading through the reviews, I had seen a pretty common theme:

salomon xa pro 3d gtc trail running shoes reviews 01

Durability diminishes for the most negative reviews where something goes wrong (sole breaks off, something deteriorates, ect…). Another type of review I had noticed is that several people (from both Amazon and the Salomon site) had also mentioned a previous version of this shoe being a lot better.

Fortunately, every negative review had a response from Salomon itself with reassurance of improvement.

More questions about the Salomon XA Pro 3D GTX:

Is salomon pro 3d good for hiking.

Any Salomon shoes including the Pro 3D is good for hiking.

Why I’m sticking to the Speedcross over the Salomon Men’s XA Pro 3D GTX:

I had hoped this shoe would be my first commitment to trying out GTX shoes from a reliable company and I had been very close to buying them, but there are 2 factors that stopped me from it:

1) I am already a super happy customer with the Speedcross 4 and 5 I own (I still run around in my 3’s to this day too). They are super reliable, extremely resilient and I have never known defects with the Speedcross shoes I own. So I’m just playing it safe and continuing to get what has always worked for me.

2) There weren’t that many, but enough negative reviews of the GTX version of this shoe that just didn’t sit right with me. I like the idea of gore tex technology, but I run around actively in environments (with my Speedcross shoes) that would be “perfect” for this GTX model and yet I’m perfectly fine doing it.

There’s a part of me that believes this GTX technology is overrated, at least with respect to trail running shoes. I just make sure to always wear waterproof socks which use similar GTX technology (like the Randy Sun waterproof socks ) and that combined with already reliable shoes (the Speedcross) is what gives me an amazing experience running in nearly any outdoor environment.

So if you are on the fence about the Salomon Men’s XA Pro 3D GTX trail running shoes, here’s a few things to know:

1) There’s a good chance they will be awesome shoes for you to wear.

2) If you have doubts about the GTX technology (don’t, because it’s waterproof), but don’t want to pay up an extra $20, get yourself the Salomon Speedcross 5 shoes instead. You will get massive reliability, it will be $130 and I’m certain you’ll be as happy as I am with it.
