Great wine tasting venue - Gruet Winery

Great wine tasting venue

A cute tasting room located in the St. Francis hotel. A small venue with a nice patio offering wines by the glass and flights. Would recommend making reservations if more than 2 people. The staff is fabulous - attentive and very friendly. Paul, Acadia and Daniel were wonderful bartenders. We made repeat visits just to see them.

Having already established his own fine French champagne style wine in Bethon, France, winery founder Gilbert Gruet came across some winemaking pioneers while on a trip to the southwestern US in 1983. Hearing of the experiences by these Europeans making wine from New Mexico grapes piqued his interest. The sandy soils and high elevations along with the swing in night and day temperatures seemed like ideal conditions for growing grapes that he was familiar. Two of his children ended up taking on the adventure to establish the state as a premier location for making fine sparkling wines in 1984. Focusing on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes, as well as some Pinot Meunier, their first sparkling release was in 1989 (from the 1987 harvest). In 1993, the Albuquerque tasting room was established and a Santa Fe tasting room followed in 2016. What began as a dream and possibility has now become a well-known source for some of the best sparkling wines made in the Unites States. In addition to grapes from New Mexico, grapes are also supplemented from vineyards in California and Washington. With a focus on Méthode Champenoise, you know you will be in for a fantastic tasting experience. We tried out the tasting room in Santa Fe. When you walk in, you will instantly be mesmerized by the bright décor, easily viewable bottles of bubblies, and friendly staff members ready to assist you. Tastings are typically done in different flights or customized ones, and there are non-sparkling wines to try as well. We stuck with the Chardonnay/Pinot Noir sparkling flights for our visit. First up, was the Sauvage NV. Aged for 24 months, this Chardonnay bubbly is bone dry with fine bubbles and notes of apples and citrus. Next was the Blanc de Blancs NV. This Brut style sparkling has a zestier feel with tropical notes and apples. We were intrigued with the 2018 Blanc de Blancs. This 42-month aged en tirage has some toasty notes of almonds and mature apples along with an excellent long finish. We were really excited by the 2016 Gilbert Gruet Grande Reserve. This Chardonnay based beast was aged one year in oak and three years en tirage. Along with the super fine bubbles, there is some great minerality, plus citrus and apples, along with a luscious creaminess. Yes, wow! The other four sparkling wines that we tried were Pinot Noir based. The Barrel-aged Bland de Noirs NV has 10% Chardonnay added to it. Aged for six months in French oak plus 16 months sur latte, the strawberry aromatics were wonderful along with vanilla and pineapple flavors. The Sauvage Rosé NV was all Pinot Noir. This two-year aged jewel was also bone-dry and had notes of strawberries and cherries along with very fine bubbles. The other 100% Pinot Noir sparkling we tried was the Brut Rosé NV. It was quite aromatic with more strawberry notes and a bit more acidity to the finish. Savor a great one for last and enjoy the 2016 Grande Rosé. Also blended with 10% Chardonnay, this lovely bubbly will hit you about mid palate with black cherries, some creaminess, and a very satisfying long finish. Everything served here is quite good and we are sure you will be walking away with a few bottles as souvenirs, too. You will feel warm and welcomed here as well as being entertained by the friendly staff chat. Santé!

I did a sparkling white flight and golden caviar side. Wine and service both very good. The pricey caviar was terrible. The main problems were the carb bases. The mini blinis were stone cold and dry. The bruscheta was overly suffused with olive oil and a bit stale. When asked I told my server about he blinis and she gave me a discount. She seemed to know this was a problem.

What wonderful time we had a Gruet Winery. We drink Gruet often and since we were traveling through Santa Fe, we had to stop and taste. So glad we did, Paul was a pleasure to meet and so informative and friendly. Highly recommend this place!! Look forward to tasting the bottles we bought for our 20th wedding anniversary. Cheers!

The day we went it was raining which attributed to the poor service and harried experience. The wine was mediocre for our taste and we bought one bottle. Unlike other winery we’ve visited the tasting was not waived if we purchased bottles.

I love Gruet and buy it whenever we are celebrating. I wanted to try sparklers that weren’t readily available. They were all delicious. We ordered a New Mexican Sunset for the prickly pear and it was a little too peach forward for my taste buds. This will always be a stop for me when in New Mexico.

Enjoy the Wineries and Tasting Rooms in and around Santa Fe

Surprise! New Mexico is home to the oldest wine-growing region in the nation! We’re talking as far back as 1629, 50 years before the first vines were planted in California. At that time, the appetite for the fermented grape lay squarely with the ruling Spaniards, who were devout Catholics. Sacramental wine was central to their daily masses and it was in short supply.

A pair of friars to the rescue: Fray Garcîa de Zuñiga and Antonio de Arteaga smuggled vines out of Spain and planted them in the fertile soil along the Rio Grande. The variety was aptly named the Mission grape and is still grown in New Mexico.

Gruet Tasting Room

You can try to say no to a sparkling wine-paired caviar flight at Gruet’s Santa Fe Tasting Room, located in the Hotel St. Francis, but good luck with that. Founded in 1984 by Gilbert Gruet, whose Champagne house (Gruet et Fils) has produced fine Champagnes in Bethon, France since 1952, Gruet Winery specializes in Méthode Champenoise sparkling wines using grapes grown principally in New Mexico. New Mexico Wineries

Their passion for wine extends beyond a simple glass, pouring over into an immersive tasting experience. Vivác’s knowledgeable staff will help pair wines with premium foods and chocolates including Ek.Chuah chocolates, a boutique chocolate with hand-crafted, small-lot truffles.

2. Gruet Winery

The pop of a cork and the wonderfully refreshing bubbles that come with an expert pour of Gruet wine will leave your mind wandering back to the roots of this American dream vineyard. Founder Gilbert Gruet inspired his family to continue their French tradition of Champagne excellence here in New Mexico with excellent Chardonnay, Pino Noir, and sparkling wines. Collecting a host of awards and accolades from the nation’s top sommeliers, Gruet should be on any wine lover’s list. Reservations are preferred at the tasting room.

Gruet Winery

A Founder of Santa Fe Sparkling Wine: Gruet Winery

Since the 1980s, this Santa Fe winery has been breaking barriers for the industry in the Southwest. The story behind Gruet Winery begins in Bethon, France, where the founder, Gilbert Gruet, planted his first vineyard in 1952. In the early 80s, Gruet had his eye on land in the US and settled on New Mexico for his sparkling crops. The first release from Gruet Winery grown in New Mexico was in 1989: the 1987 Brut and Blanc de Noir.

Decades later, Gruet Winery continues to produce beautiful wines and has made quite a name for itself in the industry. The tasting room in Santa Fe opened in 2016 and is a perfect spot for a quiet date night or early afternoon flight. They offer wine by the glass, sparkling wine cocktails, and light appetizers. We often hear from our return guests that they include a stop at Gruet Winery each time they visit Santa Fe.

While Gruet Winery is a great destination, there are so many fantastic New Mexico wineries and wine bars to check out on your stay. Continue reading for other great spots for a glass of wine in Santa Fe!

Gruet Winery Sparkling Wines

I was eight years old traveling west on Route 66 with my parents on a summer road trip to the New Mexican Cimarron desert, exploring geologic formations that made this part of the United States. I’d sit in the rear seat thinking of observational games to keep my mind occupied, watching swift Roadrunner birds (made famous by the Looney Tunes animators) keeping pace with our four door sedan motoring at 100 kph. This tickled me pink, catching glimpses of that bird thinking it must be a tough catch, and if once caught, not a lot of meat reward on its bones. Seeing the flat arid desert climate around Santa Fe, I realized how beautiful, yet unforgiving the landscape would be for wildlife.

My mother had gone back to University to secure her Bachelor of Science degree. This was our impetus for the trip, and hopefully instilled in me an appreciation for earth sciences and the billions of years of soil erosion by the elements. I adored New Mexico state history and the local Indian tribes who had occupied the land for thousands of years prior.

Wickedly dry, and hot but with refreshing windy weather conditions, I never felt the humid oppression of my Northeast Oklahoma home. We stopped at Santa Fe museums dedicated to the artist Georgia O’Keeffe.

Her magical paintings captured the desert colors, and light reflections. Part of the desert erosion are these natural monolithic outcroppings (Mesa’s) soaring hundreds of meters out of the desert floor. On the New Mexican horizon afforded the higher cooler mountain elevations, ideal for vineyard development, until then not contemplated.

The Gruet family, led by Gilbert Gruet, has been growing grapes in the Champagne region since the early 1950s. An experimental vineyard planted in the ‘70s near Engel, New Mexico, brought a group of French vignerons in 1981 to tour the US Southwest. Mr. Gruet immediately recognized the banner potential for conventionally raised grapes, however, the dry climate, with uniquely low pests and diseases in the vineyards, and the soil impact affecting sparkling wine production all conspired for low chemical intervention winemaking. While not organic, it was far less intensive than vineyards in the Champagne region. His unique perspective developing the Bethon village’s wine co-op (a grape and winery co-operative), utilizing his vineyard and contract negotiation skills to build trusted collaborative business synergies with the N.M. locals.

gruet winery santa fe tasting room tours

Sparkling wine’s best and worst flavor qualities are made in the vineyard. All sparkling wine viticulturists seek a high acid, low ph grape grown with neutral fruit flavor harmony. The captured wine, and secondary bottle ferments strive only to highlight the wine’s bubbles and round fruit flavors finesse.

The Gruet winery cellar team is sophisticated and modern, wedded to current technological advances to deliver a consistently superior wine. The wine press has universally acknowledged Gruet’s superior quality, having been awarded no fewer than fifty international and domestic commendations over the previous 30 vintages!

1989 was the first Gruet (vintage 1987) commercial release. The winery quickly established a distribution network on both coasts, and has become a winery destination renowned for International Balloon Fiestas, and more recently fine culinary traditions with Gruet American wine partnerships in Washington, Oregon, and California vineyards.

My personal experience is with the three Gruet core portfolio sparkling wines below:

Gruet NV Brut

Offers crisp green apple and citrus peel; an introduction to their traditional (Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir base), lighter yeasty, yet clean house style.

Gruet 2018 Blanc de Blancs

Fresh and complex aromas of toasted almonds, baked brioche with apple, and grapefruit ginger marmalade flavors. As with most Blanc de Blancs (Chardonnay based) sparkling wine the finish is lean, zesty, and dramatically delicious.

Gruet 2016 Grand Rosé Cuvée Danielle

The 2016 Grand Rose “Cuveé Danielle” with aromas of mixed red berries, and the soupçon of signature yeasty bread complex finish.

The wine world owes a debt of gratitude to Mr. Gruet for his vision of foreseeing the uniquely delicious sparkling New Mexican wines, and his savvy skills in building interstate relationships with the Pacific coast vineyards.
