CONNECTING KIDS WITH NATURE

The problem.

Children are growing up in a world full of concrete and electronics. As the world continues to develop, access to and time spent in nature are becoming threatened. Children have told us they have never been off the pavement to explore or play! A lack of connection to wild spaces, threatens the future of these natural spaces.

The Solution

When children connect with the outdoors and open space—immersed in nature, they are more apt to care about the outdoors and love being there. Forming a connection with nature often leaves children feeling healthier, happier and connected to something larger than themselves. These connections often lead to dedication to protecting this scarce resource. Splash is passionate about protecting the natural world through ensuring that each new generation understands its impact on nature, and nature’s benefits to humanity.

Water and wildlife education

We are a small and passionate group of nature-lovers, scientists, and educators working toward ensuring every child has access to forming a connection with the natural world. We train teachers how to teach Science in a fun and engaging way. We teach both teachers and students about our natural habitat using our water pollution prevention-focused curricula. Knowledge taught in the classroom is applied through a culminating field trip to the Splash Science Center in Mather.  Splash is passionate about being the region’s resource for environmental outreach and education, and is dedicated to creating the next generation of nature stewards. We are ensuring that every child understands the impact they make on the environment, through the choices made at home and in their community.

Who Loves Us

These resources and directions, etc., are FANTASTIC!  Thank you ever so much for this.  Talk about thinking outside the box!!!  You and the other SPLASH folks have outdone yourselves.  Thank you, thank you.

Beth Conklin, 4th Grade Teacher, Golden Empire Elem., SCUSD

Thank you for giving our class such a lovely experience!  It was truly enjoyable to see all the cute critters in ‘Critterville.’  SPLASH is an amazing program!  It is not only great for preserving nature and animals such as vernal pools, but is fun and educational as well.  I want to recognize SPLASH for all the hard work put into creating our projects, presentations, materials, workbooks, etc.

Carissa, 5th Grade Student, Arlene Hein Elem., EGUSD

Not only did my class learn a lot, but I did as well. This generation is our future and it is important for them to see different parts of our ecosystem and how it is important to the area. One girl was sad to hear that only 5-10% of the Vernal pools still exist. She wants to grow up and make sure they are taken care of.

Sheila Lauk, 5th Grade Teacher, Empire Oaks Elem., FCUSD

Thank you adults for the learning. It was the best day of my life!

Participating Student

The Nicolaus Dairy Farm field trip is a hidden gem of Elk Grove. My students loved all of the hands-on learning stations and projects they got to take home. The knowledgeable staff kept students engaged!

Tara Anderson, Teacher, Helen Carr Costello Elementary, EGUSD

Our presenter was amazing, and the kids were totally engaged!  I was so impressed at how many of the NGSS standards for CA were addressed in the presentation.  It creates a connection to the standards that you won’t want to miss!  I want to do it again next year!  Thank you SOOO much!

Mary Ann Brennan, 5th Grade Teacher, Buckeye Union Distance Learning School, BUESD

Thank you for the extraordinary presentation in teaching me and my classmates all about your job, how to help the environment, and a bunch of different creatures and how they survive in their stream habitat.

Destiny, 5th Grade Student, Helen Carr Castello Elem., EGUSD

We’ve been on a lot of field trips, and this one tops as a favorite. From beginning to end there was excellent communication, lessons linked to standards, engaging docents, and even fun takeaways (the kids and parents were so impressed with the leather tags and plants that grew just a few days later). And it was FREE! Thank you for an amazing hands-on opportunity for my Title 1 students.

Sacramento Field Trips: Homeschool Favorites

Sacramento is a wonderful place for families to explore, with numerous museums and and nature reserves to get hands on experience with science, history, and culture. Below are 10 of the best Sacramento field trips, which are favorites among area homeschoolers. Which one will be your family’s new favorite?

I’ve also included a review of a wonderful new picture book from an award-winning local author that features Sacramento and its vibrant Mexican-American community.

Disclosure: I received complimentary copies of the books below for review purposes; however, all opinions are my own. This post contains affiliate links. If you click through and make a purchase, I receive a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Sacramento Field Trips: 10 Homeschool Favorites

Below are some of our favorite Sacramento field trips, wonderful for exploring history, science, and culture.

Maidu Museum and Historic Site : The Maidu are among the original inhabitants of Sacramento area . The Maidu Museum has wonderful interactive displays and hands on activities for kids. In addition to the museum itself, you can visit a ancient Nisenan Maidu village and see petroglyphs. In the warm months, there is also storytelling from Maidu elders on select Friday evenings.

Sutter’s Fort : Located in the heart of Sacramento, Sutter’s Fort is of major historical importance not just to the region but to the history of the American migration to the West. It is popular site for families and school field trips because it provides great hands on experiences to help investigate our state’s history. Kids really get a sense of what life was like in those days – from doing laundry and baking bread to what it would have been like to travel cross country with your family in a wagon!

Aerospace Museum of California : Learn all about planes at the Aerospace Museum! Built on the grounds of the former McClellan Air Force Base, the Aerospace Museum consists primarily of a large, open exhibit hall plus outdoor space with 50+ aircrafts. Though they do have an area just for young visitors, the main museum is best enjoyed by older kids.

SMUD Museum of Science and Curiosity : MOSAC is one of the newest area museums, dedicated to encouraging curiosity and imagination among its visitors through interactive exhibits about topics like space exploration and climate change. I love that there is plenty to engage children of different ages, including live demonstrations. There is also a state-of-the-art planetarium that runs programs throughout the day.

Crocker Art Museum : The Crocker is a beloved Sacramento institution, and it works hard to be accessible to all ages. There are special programs for very young children, plus several areas of the museum just for kids to play and explore. In addition, there are frequent special events, tours, and classes offered, including periodic homeschool days.

Old Sacramento : This historic part of Sacramento is a fun place to visit with kids, to see what life was like in the time of the Gold Rush.  You can take a river cruise, enjoy the old-timey shops, or visit one of several museums, including the State Railroad Museum (always a favorite with kids!) You can find tons of great food, including local favorite Danny’s Mini Donuts .

Sacramento Adventure Playground : The Adventure Playground is a space where kids enjoy hours of messy, open-ended play. This free afterschool program is powered by Fairy Tale Town (another local favorite), and it operates on the principle that imaginations are sparked when kids are provided with raw materials rather than pre-designed play spaces. Adult supervision is provided, but parents are asked to leave, so that children develop a greater sense of independence. In addition to the free after school program, there are also special events and paid homeschool programs.

Effie Yeaw : Step outside of busy city life as you enter the 100 acres of woodland along the American River. The nature trails are all kid-friendly, with interpretive signs along the way. We frequently see deer and wild turkeys, among other wildlife. We usually end our visit by exploring at the Nature Center then enjoying the natural playground and butterfly garden.

Nimbus Fish Hatchery : The Nimbus Hatchery raises Chinook salmon and steelhead for release to the American River.  The visitor’s center offers free educational programs, and you can also enjoy the lovely nature trail on site. My son loved looking at the fish ponds (raceways) when he was small. Be aware that the facility, including the parking lot, closes at 3 pm on most days.

Sacramento Capitol and Gardens : You can’t live in the capital of California and not visit the State Capitol! The Capitol itself is an impressive building and has so much history to explore.  (Be sure to check out the paintings of the governors, especially Jerry Brown’s first portrait!).  But the grounds themselves are also worth the trip, with plants from throughout the state.  Our favorite time to visit is at the holidays, when you can enjoy the decorations – including the Christmas tree on the lawn – as well as holiday concerts.

New Picture Book from an Award-Winning Local Author Celebrates Sacramento

school field trips sacramento

I’ve watched Leticia Ordaz as a news reporter for years, so I was thrilled to discover that she is also an award-winning children’s author! The Emmy-nominated anchor is a native of Northern California and is passionate about literacy. Her books, which are inspired by her own children, are helping to change the current statistics, which show low representation of Latinx characters in children’s books, as well as a surprisingly small number of Latinx authors and illustrators.

Mr. Macaw Lost in the Big City  is part of a series of bilingual children’s books about two boys and a magical kite passed down from their abuelito.  In this installment, the boys decide to sneak Mr. Macaw into their luggage after a trip to Mexico, but everything goes wrong when their suitcase gets mixed up with someone else’s! Will Mr. Macaw find his way back to them?  A beautiful story of family ties and dealing with the loss of a loved one. I love how it showcases a loving Mexican/Mexican-American family. As the boys chase the kite through Sacramento, we see popular landmarks like the Tower Bridge and Old Sacramento. Mexican-American culture is also celebrated, as the boys inquire about the kite at a local panadería and talk with a mariachi band.

A wonderful adventure story for the whole family to enjoy. It would be the perfect accompaniment to any of these Sacramento field trips!

Bring Back In-Person Field Trips. Here’s Why

school field trips sacramento

Just as peak field trip season was set to get underway in the spring of 2020, the pandemic hit. Schools, and the cultural institutions and countless other organizations that normally welcome K-12 students for experiential learning, closed their doors.

“The pandemic was absolutely devastating for field trips. They went off a cliff, even when schools went back to in-person,” said Susie Wilkening, principal of Wilkening Consulting, a Seattle-based audience research firm.

Statistics bear this out. In the spring of 2023, Wilkening Consulting and the American Alliance of Museums conducted a survey of 340 museum directors from around the country on post-pandemic visitation. Forty percent of respondents reported that they continued to experience lower on-site visitation from K-12 teachers and students.

Several factors may be keeping schools from venturing back to in-person field trips. Virtual field trips rose in popularity during the pandemic, allowing students to glimpse educational sites as far-flung as the Egyptian pyramids or the Louvre art museum in Paris from the comfort of their homes or classrooms—and those opportunities still exist.

Logistics and funding may also be preventing schools from returning to on-site field trips. Educational researchers have suggested that some schools prioritize putting resources toward activities that may improve student achievement on standardized tests over experiences like field trips, whose results aren’t as quantifiable. That may especially be the case for schools struggling to help students recover from pandemic-era learning declines.

The argument for doing field trips again

But a growing body of research, advocacy from some district-level officials, and anecdotes from students provide compelling reasons for bringing back in-person field trips.

Lin Tajeken Jeufack, a high school junior at Kenwood High School in Maryland’s Baltimore County schools, vividly recalls how a 6th grade field trip to the National Aquarium in Baltimore that offered a behind-the-scenes glimpse into husbandry of aquatic animals planted an idea in her head about one day becoming a marine biologist.

Lin described testing the water in the animal tanks, peering under a microscope in an onsite laboratory at the aquarium, and learning about a profession she knew little about. The 16-year-old, who is now enrolled in her school’s International Baccalaureate program, volunteers at a local hospital, and says she’s leaning toward majoring in math in college, though she hasn’t ruled out a career in marine biology. Lin still welcomes the opportunity to attend in-person field trips—like a recent outing to the Philadelphia’s Franklin Institute, an art museum that features a “Giant Heart” exhibit that allows visitors to walk through the organ’s enormous, lifelike chambers.

“I think students feel safer now [post-pandemic],” said Lin. “We have a really tough course load; we’re always working. It’s good for us to get away from school for a little while.”

Students from Centreville Elementary School in Fairfax, Va. release brook trout that they’ve grown from eggs in their classroom into Passage Creek at Elizabeth Furnace Recreational Area in the George Washington National Forest in Fort Valley, Va. on Tuesday, April 23, 2024. The students spent the day outside bidding farewell to their class pet and participating in other outdoor educational activities.

Field trips are especially beneficial for disadvantaged students

The lasting benefits of field trips don’t necessarily register in students’ consciousness at the moment of the visit. But these experiential outings have been proven to increase student interest in, knowledge about, and motivation to study subject matter to which they’re exposed, according to a sweeping, decade-old report by Ohio University researchers on field trips. Students from disadvantaged backgrounds tend to reap the biggest benefits from these experiences, as they are less likely to have the opportunity to engage in these activities outside of school-sponsored trips.

That’s not lost on Kadee Anstadt, superintendent/CEO of Washington Local Schools in Toledo, Ohio, who’s committed to ensuring that the students in her high-poverty district take field trips routinely.

“We are quite intentional now about the breadth of experiences we are offering our students,” said Anstadt, who recently established what she refers to as “superinten-dates,” in which she personally takes groups of students on field trips they likely wouldn’t otherwise experience.

“As an urban district, our kids sometimes don’t get to see their larger community. We’ve been to the Detroit Auto Show, to hear a Holocaust survivor, experienced the Toledo Opera, and taken the entire junior class to the Henry Ford Museum,” she said.

Some of the field trips students in the Washington Local Schools take are culturally enriching; others, practical. The district has developed a partnership with two local YMCA branches in which every 2nd grader receives eight water safety lessons.

“This ensures our kids know the dangers of a pool, pond, or lake, and also know how to get help if they need it. Some learn to swim during this time. For so many, it’s the first time they’ve ever been in a pool,” said Anstadt.

Since last year, more than 1,000 of the district’s approximately 7,000 students have received the lessons.

Fish hatcheries, hiking, ice fishing, and Native American landmarks

Laurie Barron, superintendent of the Evergreen school district in Montana, shares a philosophy on experiential field trips similar to Anstadt’s—but with vastly different surroundings to explore.

“We are in northwestern Montana bordering Glacier National Park, a recreation mecca,” said Barron, reeling off a number of recreational and cultural resources available within a quick bus trip: fish hatcheries, hiking, ice fishing, skiing, forestry opportunities, and Native American landmarks.

Barron says administrators aim for younger students in the K-8 district to go on between two and four trips per year, a number that increases to six to eight trips by the time students reach 8th grade.

“We love for them to have several off-campus opportunities each year, experiencing the great west Montana outdoors. It’s very relevant and easy to connect that to our curriculum and content,” Barron said. “And students remember a lot more that way than just reading about places in a book.”

Emmanuel Trujillo-Beas, family liaison at Marie L. Greenwood Early-8, talks with other school liaisons during a group discussion at Lowery Conference Center on March 13, 2024 in Denver. One of the goals of the meeting was to discuss how schools can better integrate new students and families into the district. Denver Public Schools has six community hubs across the district that have served 3,000 new students since October 2023. Each community hub has different resources for families and students catering to what the community needs.
