Whitehaven West Pier Sea Fishing Mark

This popular mark offers fishing from two levels. Most fishing is from the top level fishing out to sea, the bottom is mainly into the harbour but is more easily accessed by disabled anglers.

Redevelopment work has improved the pier area and there is a nearby car park. The west pier is the larger of the town’s two harbour arms and is very popular because it tends to produce the bigger fish. Most anglers fish from the long straight stretching from the elbow to the end.

The town’s other pier is lower amd means less of a haul to land a fish.

Plaice, flounders, dabs, cod, whiting, coalfish, dogfish, mackerel, garfish, eels and rockling are the main species taken at various times of the year.

Occasionally the odd bass, conger eel, gurnard, pollack, mullet and sea trout are caught and it is possible for unusual species to turn up.

BAIT AND TACKLE

Lugworms, ragworms and white rag take plaice in spring. Crabs, worm baits and mackerel strip take fish off the bottom in summer.

GETTING THERE

From the A66 take the A595 south to Whitehaven. Turn right onto the A5094 and follow the one-way system towards St Bees. At the second set of traffic lights turn right and at the next set turn left and go past the Beacon towards the pier. Just past the fisheries building on the right, turn right onto the bottom of the pier where there is limited free parking. There are pay and display car parks 100 yards away.

Directions : From the north follow the A596. From the south the A595. Both roads take you into the town where the sea front and piers are signposted

The Solway Firth is one of the best sea angling locations in the UK.  Large tides and complex currents help supply plentiful nutrients, which in turn support a rich diversity of marine life.  The warm waters of the Gulf Stream attract most of the fish species found in British waters.  Up to fifty species may be caught from a boat and to catch nine different species in a day from the shore is quite possible.  The opportunity for such a catch along with some of the finest tope, ray and pollock fishing in Britain make the area a popular angling destination.

The Solway carries an exceptionally high number of landscape and wildlife conservation designations.  This reflects the quality of the natural environment, from the immense flats of intertidal sand and saltmarsh of the inner estuary to the rugged cliffs and rocky shores further west.  Much of the Cumbrian coastline is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, while the Dumfries and Galloway coastline carries three National Scenic Area designations.  The mountains of the Lake District to the south, the Galloway Hills to the north and the Isle of Man nearby create a dramatic backdrop.

Angling is variously regarded as a hobby, a sport, a science and an art.  This web page is intended as an introduction to angling in the Solway Firth for both locals and visitors to the area.  Its aim is to help you enjoy your fishing without compromising the natural environment.  Boat launch points are illustrated on the Fishing Marks page and there are details of charter boat businesses below that will get you out on the water.  Local angling shops are a mine of more detailed information on the best bait, tackle and target species at any time of year.

Catch of the Day

Some fish are fairly easy to catch and even regarded as a pest by serious anglers.  Dogfish are scavengers and will seek out just about any bait you care to chuck in the water with their keen sense of smell.  They are hardy types and stick around even in the depths of winter so are good targets for those just starting out.

Similarly, mackerel in the summer months can be stunning fish for beginners.  You might spend a few happy hours bobbing about in a small boat before hitting a shoal with all the excitement of multiple hook ups.  They have beautiful iridescent markings and are delicious cooked and eaten very fresh.

The shallow waters and fine estuary mud of the Solway are perfect for many flatfish or ‘flatties’ as they are known.  Plaice are the most glamorous with their bright orange spots.  Flounders can be caught quite easily in shallow water with hook and line or by the messier method of ‘tramping’.  This involves literally walking around shallow muddy parts of the shore and feeling for the fish with your feet.  Strange but true – ask the locals!

For those who take the whole business a bit more seriously, the Solway coast supports a fantastic variety of fish that pose more of a challenge.  Cod can be caught from shore marks but your chance of success depends on understanding the behaviour of the beast. Elusive mullet cruise tantalisingly in clear shallow water almost asking you to have a go.  The host of other species you might want to try your luck with includes haddock, whiting and pollock.

Screaming reels

Bass are an impressive species with their striking bright silver appearance but unfortunately their stock continues to decline. Spinning is the usual method with bigger bass around rocky reefs and smaller schooling bass in more sheltered bays. In 2017 the catch for recreational anglers is set at one fish a day per angler from July to December with catch and release in place from January to June.

Tope are the biggest inshore shark species in the UK and the Solway is renowned for its exciting summer tope fishing.  Record breaking numbers and individuals have been caught in the area so be prepared for an energetic experience.  Your best chance of success is from a boat but tope are also caught from shore marks along the Galloway coast.

Sharks, skates and rays are all related and share the characteristic of being slow to reproduce.  As a result, stocks are vulnerable to exploitation and many species are protected by law.  However, they are tough characters and can be caught and safely returned to the depths if handled carefully.

Smooth-hound are amongst the various smaller sharks you might catch from both boat and shore and still provide a real taste of shark fishing adventure.  Just make sure you know what you’re doing and follow codes of good practice for catch and release.

Thornbacks are the most common of the rays and, just like sharks, should go back in the water.  They can be caught throughout the summer from boats or from the many sandy beaches around the Solway where they feed on crabs and shrimps.

One for the pot

To eat a fish you’ve caught yourself is a special treat.  Freshly caught mackerel is superb on a summer barbecue and Solway flatties need little more a couple of minutes in the frying pan and a squeeze of lemon.  Just remember to take only what you can use, observe recommended minimum landing sizes (MLS) and stick to species that are sufficiently abundant.

MLS is the size of your fish from nose to tail. Some of the recommended MLS below are higher than the legal MLS and are based on the size species need to reach to breed.  Remember that some species are protected by law and salmon and sea trout must be returned unless you are licensed.  The information below should help you identify what you should and shouldn’t take home for tea.

Catch and release

Fish that you want to put back, perhaps because they are undersized or not very good eating like wrasse, need to be handled carefully and confidently.  You might be able to unhook your fish in the water if you’re fishing from the shore.  If it needs to come out of the water, handle the fish with wet hands and get it back to its watery world as soon as you can.  If possible, gently support fish in the water facing into the current to give the best chance of recovery.  Use a net to gently lift and lower fish if you’re fishing from a boat or steep rocks.

Sharks and rays are being tagged to gather information about their behaviour.  If you catch a tagged fish, take a note of the species, where and when it was caught and send the information off to the address on the tag.  More information about handling tope can be found on the Scottish Sea Angling Conservation Network website.

Taking the bait

The messiness and ‘yuk’ factor of digging lugworms makes it huge fun for kids.  The worm’s habit of squirting its watery insides everywhere if handled too roughly only adds to the experience.  Just remember to back-fill the holes.

Peeler crabs are shore crabs in a state of early summer moult when their new shells are still soft to the touch.  Find them on rough shorelines but remember to put rocks back as you found them so other creatures can survive.  Leave any berried (egg carrying) females you find and only take what you need.  Remember to observe any byelaws or regulations that might be in place – check with local contacts.

• Be aware of the rising tide, especially in the Solway – don’t get cut off
• Wear a lifejacket when near the sea as advised by The Maritime and Coastguard Agency

The Fishing Marks shown below have been chosen because they are fairly easily accessible.  However, care should be taken wherever you fish.  Most marks in the Solway are tide dependent and many areas have a large tidal range.  Avoid walking a long way out.  There is a danger of being caught by the incoming tide or in areas of soft mud, or become disorientated in mist.  BEWARE OF LARGE WAVES which can sweep you off rocks.  See below for more safety advice.

The maritime port of Whitehaven was once the third-largest in the UK with trade links all over the world. The town’s prosperity was built on coal, developed by the wealthy Lowther family who also laid out the elegant Georgian town. The wealth of Georgian architecture led to Whitehaven being listed as a ‘gem town.’

The historic 17th century harbour, enhanced by nautical sculptures, dramatic lighting effects and a brand new marina, is the focus for spectacular maritime events and activities including the occasional visit of tall sailing ships.

In the mid 18th century, Whitehaven was used as a template for the expansion of New York.

Culture & Heritage

Until the early 17th century Whitehaven was a small coastal village that lived off fishing, farming and salt-making. Then the wealthy Lowther family began to capitalise on the rich seams of coal in the area – pits were dug and pretty soon the ‘black gold’ was being extracted at mammoth rates: in some cases, the coal seams were dug to a distance of five miles under the Irish Sea.   The Whitehaven mines were among the most dangerous in the world for pit explosions - one of the worst was in May 1910, when 136 miners lost their lives at Wellington Pit.   The first quay was built in 1634 to export coal to Ireland but a growth in shipping between Europe, Africa, America and the West Indies necessitated the building of additional quays, or tongues, to cope with the burgeoning trade. By 1750 Whitehaven was the third most important port in the country after London and Bristol, and plans were underway to create a gracious town with elegant Georgian houses, wide thoroughfares and new churches to reflect the town's wealth.   Unfortunately, the American War of Independence (1775-1783) severely affected the important tobacco trade with Maryland and Virginia, and Whitehaven's sea merchants faced bankruptcy through contraction of markets and an increase in piracy on English ships. War may have hampered trade, but it was a boon for shipbuilding, and Whitehaven was to produce up to 1000 wooden ships over the next 100 years.   Coal mining continued as an important industry until the 1930s, followed by gradual closure of the pits. In 1943 the Marchon Chemical Works was built on the site of Ladysmith pit and became a leading producer of detergent powders. Its tall chimneys dominated the Whitehaven skyline for around 50 years until closure in 2005 and demolishment two years later. The flattened site is now earmarked for landscape restoration.   Today, improvements to the harbour area and a careful restoration of the town’s Georgian buildings are part of an ongoing regeneration programme, the latest phase of which is to upgrade footpaths, cycleways and signage along the coast to St Bees and improve access to Haig Colliery Mining Museum, Saltom Pit and the RSPB reserve at St Bees.

Egremont - Egremont still celebrates its medieval roots having once been a part of the Barony of Egremont. One of the high points of the year being the annual Crab Fair, incorporating the internationally famous World Gurning Championship.

St Bees - St Bees Head is the most westerly point in Cumbria and sheltering underneath is the village of St Bees. According to legend, it was to this bay that St Bega arrived from Ireland, building a nunnery that later evolved into St Bees Priory.   Beckermet - Within this rural landscape of pastoral fields and wooded dells, it comes as a surprise to encounter the high-tech complex of Sellafield, Britain's nuclear reprocessing facility. In dramatic contrast to this ultra-modern spectacle the outlying villages of Beckermet and Haile quietly display their wealth of antiquities dating back over 1000 years.

Cleator Moor - The large ‘new' town of Cleator Moor was built to house migrant workers in the area in search of work. The area around Cleator contained rich deposits of iron ore. Once ironworks were established at Cleator Moor (1842) and Workington, a network of railways followed to transport the produce to local furnaces. Sections of the old railway line are still visible, with parts around Rowrah and Cleator Moor now forming a cycleway.

British Sea Fishing

North West England

New Brighton and Fort Perch Rock Beach – The beaches around this area are generally fished several hours either side of low tide. Cod are caught here in the winter and high numbers of whiting can be caught, although the average size if often small. Other species caught here include dab, gurnard, Dover sole, flounder, school bass and dogfish, plus plaice should be present in the late spring and through to the summer. Thornback ray can be caught here to sandeel baits fished at distance, while smooth-hound can also be caught on crab baits. View this area on Google Maps here .

River Mersey – Fisherman’s Wharf and Priory Wharf can fish well for flounder, dab, whiting, cod, silver eels and school bass. On the other side of the river, Seaforth rocks offers good fishing for the same species with dogfish and thornback rays also caught here as well. A permit is needed to fish some parts of the Seaforth rocks area. Further inland Liverpool Marina offers various flatfish, whiting, silver eels and produces some decent cod. The tidal flow can be very strong here in certain conditions. Otterspool Promenade marks the furthest down the river that saltwater species will regularly be caught and produces similar species to Liverpool Marina. View this area on Google Maps here .

Southport – Unfortunately the Southport area is not the best for fishing. This is due to the fact that the wide and expansive beaches are fairly featureless and even very long casts still end up in relatively shallow water. The best chance of fish comes from Southport Pier which is the second-longest in the country (only Southend’s is longer) and has a tram running to the end. However, at low tide there is little water around the pier so this is a high tide venue. Casting from the end of the pier produces mostly flounder and dab although summer will see occasional plaice, silver eels and potentially school bass caught. View this area on Google Maps here .

Blackpool – Blackpool’s three main piers offer good fishing for a wide range of species including flounder, dab, school bass, gurnard, Dover sole, dogfish and potentially rays and smooth-hound. However, access to the piers is restricted and some are only open to members of local angling clubs. An alternative fishing mark is the North Wall. This is a high tide venue which can produce plenty of fish species such as whiting, dab, rockling, flounder, dogfish, bass, Dover sole in the winter whiting and cod. There is also a chance of highly-regarded species such as thornback ray and smooth-hound. View this area on Google Maps here .

Cleveleys and Fleetwood – Cleveleys can produce good fishing with smooth-hound a possibility in summer months in calm weather. The beach is the best mark for smooth-hound, although the weather has to be calm to catch this species. The sea defence wall (Gynn Wall) continues here and is a high water venue which produces flounder, dab, whiting, dogfish and decent sized cod. In Fleetwood Rossall Point is a mixed ground beach that can produce great fishing, especially if a food-holding gully can be uncovered. Cod and whiting are here in the winter, and summer sees thornback ray, bass, silver eels and various flatfish species caught. View this area on Google Maps here .

Morecambe and Heysham – Morecambe Bay Stone Jetty can produce flatfish such as flounder and dab, dogfish, rockling, school bass, silver eels and the chance of a strap conger eel, although the ground can be quite snaggy. Winter will see cod and whiting also caught here. At Heysham Throbshaw rocks is another good venue which offers whiting and cod in the winter and dab, flounder, school bass, rockling and silver eels at other times of the year. Anglers should always be cautious on the rocks here and be aware that large waves can come over the rocks. so the area should be avoided if the sea is rough. View this area on Google Maps here .

Barrow-in-Furness – The Walney Channel (the stretch of water between Walney Island and the mainland) is a good fishing mark which produces a range of species. Cod and whiting are caught here throughout the winter, with some cod reaching decent sizes. Throughout the rest of the year flounder, silver eels, dab, rockling and coalfish can be caught. Peeler crab often proves to be the best bait, although black lugworm and squid baits can account for the larger cod catches. The tidal flow can be strong at times here and certain areas can be snaggy. View this area on Google Maps here .

St. Bees Head – St. Bees Head is a headland on the Cumbrian Coastal Way and is divided into the south and north heads. Both offer good fishing although this can be a dangerous mark to fish as climbing is required to get to some fishing positions and certain parts can get cut off by the incoming tide. Anglers should not fish this mark in bad weather and it is best to go for the first time with someone who has fished here before. Deep water is found close in and fish can be caught at short range from the shelves at low tide, although other parts are fishable at high tide. However, using rotten bottom rigs is advised as this is very much a rough ground mark. Summer sees mackerel caught here on strings of feathers or daylights and lures such as plugs and spinners will also catch bass and decent sized pollock as well as the mackerel. Other species which can be caught here include cod, whiting, wrasse, dogfish, coalfish, bull huss and dab. Big conger eels are also caught here and can be caught on mackerel flappers, bluey, squid, herring or cuttlefish. Since there is the chance of a big conger here anglers should use size 6/0 – 8/0 hooks and wire or heavy mono hooklengths. View this area on Google Maps here .

Whitehaven – There are two piers in Whitehaven – the North Pier and the West Pier. The both are open for fishing during certain times of the year but anglers should check in advance and they will be closed during bad weather. A huge range of species can be caught here with mackerel and pollock caught on lures, garfish on floatfished baits and school bass, dogfish and various flatfish species caught to baits in the summer and cod. The winter sees cod, whiting, dab, flounder and rockling catches. Conger eel are also present here and it is worth trying for them with big fish or squid baits fished close in. Both piers can become packed with mackerel anglers and general tourists in the summer. View this area on Google Maps here .

Workington Rocks and Maryport – Workington rocks offers good summer flatfish fishing with plaice, flounder, dab and possibly turbot caught as well as dogfish and school bass. Ragworm and lugworm can produce fish but peeler crabs usually gets the best results. Cod and whiting may also be caught here in the winter. Maryport Harbour is a good all-round fishing mark which provides plaice, dogfish, pollock, flounder, silver eels and possibly gurnard in the summer and cod, whiting and coalfish in the winter. Maryport Promenade also fishes well for the same species over high water, but bad weather can see waves crash onto the fishing positions. View this area on Google Maps here .

Whitehaven holiday rental accommodation is located close to the west beach in the charming seaside town of North Berwick, East Lothian, Scotland.

This spacious upper apartment property has recently been refurbished to a high standard and the accommodation comprises the lounge, kitchen/diner as well as two comfortable bedrooms and a large shower room, and an additional WC. There is a small outdoor courtyard with table and chairs and barbeque for outdoor entertainment.

Located at the top end of the main street in North Berwick, Whitehaven is a short walk to the beach and only a couple of minutes from the bustling seaside town center, brimming with boutique shops, galleries, restaurants, cafes, coffee houses and bars. This is a fabulous place to relax and watch the world go by with easy access to the east and west beach and located 2 minutes away from the premier golf course at North Berwick Golf Club.

Fidra Island

Fidra is an uninhabited island in the Firth of Forth, 2.5 miles north-west of North Berwick. Robert Louis Stevenson often visited the beaches at the area known today as Yellowcraig and it is said that he based his map of Treasure Island on the shape of Fidra.

The Scottish Seabird Centre offer a fantastic range of boat trips, from March to October, with something to suit people of all ages. Look out for different wildlife every month from puffins and seals to gannets and dolphins.

Seacliff Beach

Seacliff beach just to the east of North Berwick is a great location for a variety of watersports, or to just sit on this stunning beach and relax.The beach is hidden under a wooded hillside. There are views up to the ruins of ­Tantallon Castle, and out to sea is the island of Bass Rock. To the left of the beach is a tiny harbour inlet with jumps and swimming.

The Bass Rock is an island in the outer part of the Firth of Forth approximately 3 miles north-east of North Berwick, and is home to a large colony of gannets.

North Berwick Beach

One of North Berwick’s main attractions, the east and west beaches have golden sands, rock pools, and a tide-filled boating pond/paddling pool on the East Sands.

North Berwick Law

A 613-foot (187 m) volcanic hill rises above North Berwick, with a whale’s jawbone “arch” at the summit. From the top, you get a great vantage point with fantastic views across the town, East Lothian, the Firth of Forth and beyond.

Tantallon Castle

Tantallon Castle is a semi-ruined mid-14th-century fortress, located 3 miles east of North Berwick. It sits atop a promontory opposite the Bass Rock, looking out onto the Firth of Forth.

The name North Berwick means North “barley farmstead” (“bere” in Old English means “barley” and “wic” in Old English is ‘farmstead’). Farming is still a major industry in the area.

Scotland’s Golf Coast boasts 22 courses in an 11 mile radius, making this the ultimate golf destination. There are two golf courses in the town of North Berwick itself, the West Links and the Glen Golf Club, and numerous others in the surrounding area,

North Berwick has a beautiful old harbour, from where you can take boat trips to the various islands in the Firth of Forth, to see such things as puffins, gannets, seals to name a few. the Scottish Sea Bird Centre is also located at the harbour.

Yellowcraig is a natural cove beach with spectacular views to the 1885 lighthouse on Fidra Island, the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson famous tale Treasure Island. It is a popular family beach, which offers a nature trail, barbecue site (which must be pre-booked with the council) and a network of footpaths through the sheltered woodlands and extensive grassland. There is a dog walk away from the beach where dog bins are provided and the beach is good for horse riding too. There are good pubs and restaurants in Dirleton. And the village also boasts a castle, managed by Historic Scotland, with superb gardens, in fact the castle gardens hold the World Record for the longest herbaceous flower bed!

Beach Wheelchairs is a charity that loans specially designed wheelchairs to people with physical disabilities, they provide beach wheelchairs for children and adults and a beach walker for loan free of charge from our Beach Hut at North Berwick Harbour.  These wheelchairs mean that people can get onto the sand at the beach and be included in activities with their family and friends – something that is nearly impossible in a standard wheelchair.
