Do Citi cards have travel insurance?

Car rental insurance, costco anywhere visa® card by citi travel insurance benefits, citi® / aadvantage® executive world elite mastercard® travel insurance coverage, does citibank offer travel insurance.

Citi credit cards provide a host of benefits, including some generous points and miles earning opportunities (depending on the card you have).

But, when it comes to travel insurance, let’s just say it’s not necessarily Citi cards' strong suit.

Still, there are Citibank travel insurance benefits you should know about to ensure you use the right card when paying for your next trip. Here are the primary benefits associated with Citi card travel insurance.

Only two Citi cards have travel insurance, and each one has a different set of benefits: The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi and the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® .

Citibank Costco-Anywhere Visa Card Credit Card

on Citibank's application

Citibank Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite™ MasterCard® Credit Card

Both cards provide rental car insurance.

The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi also offers roadside assistance, worldwide travel accident insurance and a 24/7 concierge for travel and emergency assistance. The Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® , on the other hand, offers baggage protection, trip cancellation/interruption insurance and trip delay protections.

If you use either of the two Citi credit cards listed above to pay for a car rental, Citi travel insurance will protect any damages to a rental car up to $50,000.

This amount will cover the cost of repairs or the cash value of the car, whichever is lower. It applies anywhere you rent a car — there are no geographic limitations — as long as the rental period is no longer than 31 days. Citibank travel insurance covers accidental damage, theft, vandalism or a natural disaster, and any necessary towing costs.

Citi's rental car insurance is secondary when renting a car within the U.S., but if you're renting outside of the country, it switches to primary coverage.

With secondary insurance, you need to rely on any other insurance coverage you have before Citi’s car rental insurance kicks in. Primary insurance, alternatively, will be the first line of coverage you have.

Coverage wouldn't apply if you rent the car to someone else or operate a rental car as a rideshare vehicle. It also only covers the car, not any personal injuries that might result from an accident.

There are several types of vehicles that are excluded from coverage. These include:

Trucks, pickup trucks, trailers, full-size vans on a truck chassis or recreational vehicles like campers and off-road vehicles.

Motorcycles or motorized bikes.

Commercial vehicles or cargo vans.

Any vehicle with fewer than four wheels.

Antique vehicles older than 20 years or that have not been made in the past decade.

Limousines.

Sport-utility trucks or open, flat-bed trucks.

Any vehicle that retails for over $50,000.

Roadside assistance

When driving in the U.S., roadside assistance is available for Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi cardholders by calling 866-918-4670.

Roadside assistance is valuable in the event of an accident, loss of fuel or other vehicle malfunction. Keep in mind that you would still have to pay for the assistance (like a tow truck, for example), but this benefit makes it easy to reach someone with one phone call.

Citi card provides access to similar assistance as a membership program like AAA . The difference is that AAA’s annual fee covers roadside assistance fees while Citi's coverage doesn't; it solely provides access to someone who can help you for a reduced rate.

Several credit cards provide some type of roadside assistance and are worth considering before paying the annual fee for AAA.

Worldwide travel accident insurance

The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi includes accident insurance, which covers the cardholder or family members if they are injured or killed when traveling on a common carrier (any vehicle that is licensed to carry passengers like a bus, plane, cruise ship or train).

You will need to have used the Citi card to cover the entire cost of the travel on that common carrier for the benefit to apply. The maximum coverage is $250,000.

Travel and emergency assistance

The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi card provides access to a 24/7 concierge to help you with a disruption to your trip. This can include medical assistance, referrals to a doctor or legal help. It can also help if you need to adjust travel plans.

Just remember, you’ll be responsible for paying for any services used, but the call is toll-free.

Baggage protection

Only available for the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® , this luggage protection provides coverage if your checked bag is stolen, lost or damaged.

The insurance covers as much as $3,000 per person ($2,000 for New York residents), but only kicks in if you use the card or American AAdvantage miles to pay for the trip.

» Learn more: The guide to baggage insurance

Trip cancellation and interruption insurance

If a covered traveler has a medical emergency or dies, the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® coverage can provide reimbursement for up to $5,000 in eligible nonrefundable expenses.

You would need to use the card or American AAdvantage miles to pay for the trip.

Trip delay protection

Another benefit that’s reserved only for the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® is trip delay protection . This coverage kicks in if your trip is delayed by at least six hours, and offers reimbursement for expenses incurred during the delay, up to $500 per trip.

This would include reasonable purchases like hotel stays, rental cars and meals.

» Learn more: The best travel credit cards right now

Citibank travel insurance is available, but limited. It is only offered on two cards and isn't as comprehensive as other credit cards with travel insurance .

Both cards include rental car coverage, but beyond this, each has its own set of benefits. Depending on which one you hold, it may include coverage like trip delay protection or roadside assistance.

People hold Citi cards for many reasons, including the ability to earn transferable Citi ThankYou Points . But, the travel insurance benefits are somewhat limited. If you have a Citi card, review the travel insurance perks before you take off to understand your coverage.

Likewise, the World Elite Mastercard line, including cards such as the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card and Citi Premier® Card, also offers expanded benefits that you won't find with cards in other payment networks.

The information for the Capital One Savor card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Many of Visa's top cards fall under the Visa Signature program, while many Mastercard's top cards fall under the World Elite Mastercard program.

To see if you're carrying a World Elite Mastercard or Visa Signature card, first find the payment network logo – typically located on the bottom right of the card. Then look for the word "Signature" under the Visa logo or the words "World Elite" above the Mastercard logo.

If you're shopping around for a new card, definitely consider one of these premium rewards cards from Mastercard or Visa. Now, let's see which of these programs may fit your lifestyle best.

Discounts and credits

Both Visa and Mastercard partner with brands that translate into perks and savings for cardholders. If you own one of these cards, read on to discover benefits you may not have realized you had.

World Elite

travel insurance world mastercard

Mastercard has recently added discounts and credits to make its World Elite program much more competitive.

  • DoorDash: World Elite members enjoy a complimentary DoorDash DashPass membership for three months, which waives delivery and reduced service fees on orders $12 or more. Plus, by paying with your World Elite Mastercard, you'll automatically get a $5 discount on their first two orders every month (until Sept. 30, 2022).
  • HelloFresh: You'll get a 5% discount on each HelloFresh purchase when paying with your World Elite Mastercard. Even better, you'll receive up to a $90 discount on your first few orders if you're a new HelloFresh customer.
  • Lyft: Each month you take three or more Lyft rides, you'll get an automatic $5 credit once per month to apply to future Lyft rides.
  • Fandango: By spending $20 or more on Fandango purchases, you'll get a $5 Fandango reward for future movie tickets or at-home movies or shows.

Additionally, you'll get a free ShopRunner membership, giving you access to free two-day shipping and free return shipping for more than 100 online retailers. Enjoy other valuable perks such as up to $1,000 in cell phone protection coverage per year, access to Priceless Experiences, Mastercard Travel & Lifestyle Services and World Elite Concierge.

Whether or not you're traveling right now, these partner benefits and money-saving perks are compelling for both shopping and travel.

Visa Signature

The Visa Signature website also offers dozens of money-saving deals you can take advantage of from the safety of your home . Save up to 35% or more at many online retailers, from Hertz to various hotels. Your Visa Signature card will deliver tons of savings you can put toward your next trip – or whatever you'd like.

Winner: The World Elite program is the better program for tangible, money-saving perks. If you're ordering food delivery or buying virtually anything online, the World Elite program offers discounts that may be difficult to find anywhere else. Related: The best credit cards for groceries in 2021

protection and card security

travel insurance world mastercard

Visa and Mastercard both take security and fraud protection seriously. For that reason, their Signature and World Elite cards carry fraud protection, emergency card replacement and other features that may go above and beyond cards outside of these programs. Let's compare their offerings:

Traditional Visa cards offer many protections, including:

  • Zero liability for fraudulent charges
  • Emergency card replacement (within 24 to 72 hours)
  • Emergency cash disbursement (within two hours)
  • Lost or stolen card reporting

Some of the cards (but not all) in the Visa Signature line also provide. These benefits are ultimately up to the issuer:

  • Cell phone protection
  • Emergency medical and dental coverage
  • Price protection
  • Return protection
  • Emergency evacuation
  • Extended warranty
  • Purchase protection

Like traditional Visa cards, most Mastercard products offer many benefits, including:

  • Zero liability fraud protection
  • Mastercard ID Theft Protection™

The World Elite program goes beyond standard Mastercard benefits to offer cell phone protection. It's getting harder to find cards that provide cell phone protection, but select Visa Signature cards and all World Elite Mastercards reimburse you for damage or theft to your mobile phone if you pay the monthly bill with the credit card. Some other Mastercard offerings also provide this coveted benefit.

Winner: World Elite Mastercards come slightly ahead thanks to the cell phone protection plan on all cards. However, it's important to look at the benefits of the specific Visa Signature card you are considering because some offer more than others.

Travel protections

For frequent travelers, both programs shine with the following travel perks:

Protections offered to all cards within the Visa Signature program include:

  • Auto rental collision damage waiver
  • Roadside dispatch
  • Travel and emergency services

Visa also offers the following benefits on a select number of cards within the Visa Signature program, depending on the issuer:

  • Lost luggage reimbursement
  • Hotel theft protection
  • Trip delay reimbursement
  • Trip cancellation and interruption insurance
  • Travel accident insurance
  • Baggage delay coverage

Related: Visa Signature: Everything you need to know

Mastercard recently removed many of the travel protections that consumers previously relied on, including travel insurance. It advertises nothing of note that would make the World Elite program stand out in travel coverage.

Winner: Visa Signature travel protections are unmatched. If you're looking to protect your travel arrangements in the uncertainty of a post-pandemic era, the Visa Signature card will be your better investment since Mastercard comes with little (if any) coverages.

Travel benefits

travel insurance world mastercard

One-of-a-kind experiences and access to special events are key reasons that frequent travelers covet the cards in these programs. From private jets to free hotel stays , soon you'll be able to enjoy these perks again.

The World Elite Mastercard program offers Priceless Experiences, offering events in more than 40 cities. Note that many experiences are still virtual now, but it's a great perk to take advantage of when you're traveling again.

Related: Unlock VIP event access with your credit cards

Likewise, places such as wineries and golf courses are included in some Visa Signature perks across the U.S.

Winner: World Elite Mastercard. Although there are a limited amount of in-person events right now, the Priceless Experiences are one of the key attractions to holding a World Elite Mastercard.

Top Visa Signature cards

Although this is not an exhaustive list, here are some of the top cards that fall under the Visa Signature program:

Chase Sapphire Preferred Card

travel insurance world mastercard

The Chase Sapphire Preferred features 2x points on travel and 3x points on dining purchases, including takeout meals, and 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening. Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

The Venture Rewards card offers 2x miles on purchases, which you can redeem as a statement credit for travel or by transferring to one of Capital One's 17 airline and hotel partners . You always have the option of redeeming your points as a statement credit on travel purchases at a rate of one cent apiece. The straightforward points system, no categories to memorize and the option to redeem points for a statement credit make the Venture Rewards card a great first rewards card. The card also offers a bonus of 100,000 miles for new cardholders after spending $20,000 on purchases in the first 12 months from account opening, or they can still earn 50,000 miles if you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first three months. Top World Elite Mastercards

There are too many cards that are part of this program to list them all, but here are a few of the best for travelers:

Capital One Savor Rewards Credit Card

The Capital One Savor is one of my favorite cash-back credit cards . You'll earn 4% on dining, entertainment purchases and popular streaming services, two broadly defined categories and 3% back at grocery stores (excluding superstores like Walmart and Target). The card charges a $95 annual fee and comes with a $300 cash-back bonus after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening.

Citi Premier® Card

The Citi Premier is a mid-tier travel rewards card that offers the benefits of Mastercard's tremendous World Elite program, plus a host of other advantages and rewards. You'll earn 3x points on restaurants, groceries, gas stations, air travel and hotels and 1x on everything else. Right now, get a sign-up bonus of 60,000 points after you spend $4,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening. Plus, for a limited time, earn 10x points per dollar on hotels, car rentals, and attractions (excluding air travel) booked on the Citi Travel℠ Portal through June 30, 2024.

Bottom line

When it comes to Visa Signature and World Elite Mastercard, there is no clear front-runner for which card is better to have in your wallet. Visa offers more protections, but Mastercard outshines Visa in other areas, especially if you are looking to celebrate getting out of the house with a one-of-a-kind experience in the summer or fall.

You can find excellent credit cards under both programs, so it might be best to have at least one card that belongs to each program. Before you apply, understand each card's specific benefits package, especially when it comes to Visa Signature cards , since the offerings vary. Always check with the issuer for a card's exact benefits package.

Categorized: Credit Cards

As I’ve written about several times before, it’s no secret that I’m a big fan of the National Bank® World Elite® Mastercard® credit card . I firmly believe this is one of the most underappreciated credit cards in Canada (or at least underappreciated in Western Canada).

travel insurance world mastercard

The National Bank World Elite Mastercard earns À la Carte Rewards points and offers cardholders benefits such as $150 in annual travel credits and access to the National Bank VIP lounge in the YUL International terminal. Due to its stellar travel insurance and purchase protection benefits, we deemed this card the Best Overall Insurance Credit Card of 2024 .

Check out our National Bank World Elite Mastercard review for more details.

One of the strongest benefits of this card in particular is its travel insurance coverage. Not only is the coverage competitive and consistently amongst the strongest in Canada across the board, but it’s also among the most flexible. Furthermore, in my experience, their insurance department is easier to deal with than most.

In this article, I detail why the National Bank® World Elite® Mastercard® shouldn’t be overlooked by frequent travelers, whether you fly on award redemptions, cash fares, or both.

Reason #1: Strong Overall Coverage

The National Bank® World Elite® Mastercard® provides a comprehensive travel insurance package to its cardholders. Importantly, this includes out-of-province medical insurance, flight cancelation and trip interruption insurance, flight delay insurance, and stolen or lost luggage insurance.

When compared with other competitive travel insurance offerings from World Elite and Visa Infinite credit cards, the National Bank® World Elite® Mastercard® outshines most of its direct competition and even competes with higher tier premium cards (for example the Amex Platinum card).

To illustrate this point, in the section below we outline each component of the travel insurance protection offered by the National Bank® World Elite® Mastercard® and compare it with some benchmarks from other prominent Canadian credit cards.

Reason #2: Coverage Applies to Award Redemptions

With the majority of credit cards, booking a flight with points excludes you from credit card insurance coverage. Many credit card insurance terms and conditions will state that the entire cost of the trip must be charged to the card for the insurance to apply. For example, look at the terms of the Flight Delay Insurance on the American Express Platinum card.

flight-delay-insurance-fully-charge-ticket-to-the-card

However, with a select few credit cards, the insurance will still apply even if only a portion of the trip or flight cost (for example the taxes and fees) is charged to the card. The National Bank® World Elite® Mastercard® is one of a few elite cards that offer this flexible coverage.

What this means is that if, like me, you frequently book flights with Aeroplan points , paying the taxes and fees with your National Bank® World Elite® Mastercard® would make you eligible for most of the card’s travel insurance coverages.

This is a big factor in my decision to use this card frequently when making award bookings, as having the peace of mind of knowing you’re covered by a strong insurance policy and not having to potentially pay for external coverage through something like AMA or Allianz is a huge benefit.

Reason #3: Stellar Customer Service

Although anecdotal, I’ve personally found the customer service for the insurance department of National Bank to be an overwhelmingly positive experience. Having dealt with several other insurance agencies associated with other cards through the COVID pandemic, I can’t often say this.

On my recent trip to Ireland for example, I found the car rental agency attempting to force me to pay for their collision damage coverage and not allowing me to use my credit card coverage due to a ‘national policy’. They claimed I had to provide a letter from my credit card company stating that the insurance was valid in the Republic of Ireland. I found it convenient that they requested this only once I was there in person and anxious to get driving, rather than the many months prior when I had booked the car.

Anyways, I was able to call the number on the back of my National Bank® World Elite® Mastercard® and be redirected to an insurance agent. From there, the agent was able to generate the required letter for me and email it to the insurance company, all within the span of about 5 minutes.

While I have yet to make an insurance claim with National Bank, this experience gives me hope that it would be a much smoother process than I’ve experienced in the past.

Coverage Offered by the National Bank® World Elite® Mastercard®

Please remember to consult the insurance certificate for complete details and to confirm all information as it pertains to your specific situation.

Out-of-Province Hospital Medical Insurance

For emergency medical care required while outside your province of residence, the National Bank® World Elite® Mastercard® has you covered for up to $5,000,000 per person per trip. There are a number of medical expense categories some of which have their own coverage limits. You can find these details in the insurance certificate.

The trip length or term is dependent on age as follows:

  • Age 54 and under: 60 days
  • Age 55 to 64: 31 days
  • Age 65 to 75: 15 days
  • 76 and over: no coverage

If the length of the trip exceeds the maximum number of days, no coverage is offered for that trip (ie. on a 64 day trip, you, unfortunately, wouldn’t be covered at all, rather than only receiving coverage for the first 60 days).

This coverage applies to the primary cardholder, a spouse traveling with the primary cardholder, and any accompanying dependent child. Importantly, to be eligible for this insurance, you must also reside in Canada and be covered by the province of residence’s public health and hospitalization insurance at the time the trip was booked and for its entire duration.

When you stack the National Bank® World Elite® Mastercard® up against other strong travel insurance cards, including the very premium Scotiabank Platinum American Express card, it holds its own, even being superior in some respects as evident in the table below.

Of note, this coverage automatically applies as a World Elite cardholder – you do not need to charge any portion of your trip to the card to be granted coverage. Do read the complete list of inclusions and exclusions prior to your trip as there are other medical exclusions that should be noted.

Trip Cancellation/Delay or Interruption Insurance

Another big insurance topic is trip cancellation and trip interruption. Trip cancellation is defined as a trip being canceled before departure, whereas trip interruption is defined as the trip being interrupted after departure.

There are numerous different events and circumstances where the coverage can apply, including, illness, injury, or hospitalization of the insured or a family member, disasters, travel advisories, loss of employment, passport theft, and more (see the insurance certificate for full criteria).

In the case of cancellation, you are covered for up to $2,500 per insured person, whereas in the case of interruption, you are covered for up to $5,000 per insured person. There are a number of allowable expense categories for each, including:

Note that this list is non-exhaustive, and the above benefits apply in the case of the trip cost being charged in full or partially to the card.

Compared with other strong travel insurance credit cards, the National Bank® World Elite® Mastercard® stacks up well on this type of insurance, offering similar or better coverage amounts and more flexible eligibility criteria than flagship cards from Scotiabank, and American Express.

Delayed Flight Insurance

One subset of the aforementioned trip cancellation/delay insurance protection is departing flight delay insurance. This is a very common situation and one that can cause a lot of grief for travelers when airlines refuse to compensate appropriately.

As we’ve written about previously, airlines are bound by APPR and are required to compensate you in the case of flight delays and cancellations where they are at fault. Airlines often try to skirt out of compensating appropriately.

While credit card insurance can’t entirely replace APPR compensation, it can help cover expenses you must incur when flight delays happen, including subsistence expenses.

The National Bank® World Elite® Mastercard® will provide coverage of $250 per day per insured person to a total of $500 per insured person for a departing flight delay of 4 hours or more. Covered expenses include accommodation and meals, transportation expenses, and essential telephone calls.

Let’s see how this stacks up against other strong credit cards.

The National Bank® World Elite® Mastercard® offers lower maximum coverage amounts than some more premium cards like the Scotia Platinum or Amex Platinum.

Stolen or Lost Luggage Insurance

With the National Bank® World Elite® Mastercard®, the cardholder and travel companions are covered in the case of delayed, lost, damaged, or stolen baggage for up to a maximum of $1,000 per person per trip.

This includes coverage of essential items in the case of delayed baggage, or the cost to reimburse damage or loss to checked or carry-on baggage. Limits to the maximum coverage depend on the type of incident:

As always, there are exclusions to the types of items covered and the specific circumstances under which no benefit is payable. Read the full insurance package for full details.

You can compare this coverage with that offered by other competitor credit cards in the table below.

Vehicle Rental Insurance (Local or Abroad)

Renting a car abroad can be a stressful experience. Driving in a new place with a vehicle you’re not familiar with, it’s normal to be fearful of the worst happening, which is what insurance is for in the first place.

Car rental keys changing hands.

At the same time, car rental agencies can be really shady to deal with, and the idea of having an accident abroad and then being at the mercy of an insurance agency stationed in a foreign country is quite intimidating.

This is why I personally have always preferred to opt out of the car rental agency’s collision damage waiver (CDW) / loss damage waiver (LDW) insurance and instead opt into the insurance coverage provided by my credit card.

With the National Bank® World Elite® Mastercard®, you can be covered for potential damages up to $65,000 MSRP, to the rental vehicle in the case of accidents, fire, theft, or vandalism. Furthermore, you are covered for charges for towing and fees charged by the rental agency for loss of use of the vehicle.

For this coverage to be eligible, you must charge the rental costs entirely to the credit card, no partial charges are allowed here.

Also, note that this coverage does not include public liability insurance, and a number of other exclusions apply, including the vehicle type (for example,  trucks,  trailers, and off-road vehicles are not covered).

The National Bank® World Elite® Mastercard® coverage for rental vehicles is good, but there are a few cards out there that edge it out in some respects.

For example, the BMO Ascend World Elite offers personal effects coverage and a more flexible stipulation for charging only part of the rental costs to the card. Meanwhile, the American Express Cobalt card uniquely insures a higher MSRP than most other cards in Canada.

Sign Up Now: Welcome Bonus

[DEPRECIATED] : The welcome offer on the National Bank World Elite ended as of June 30, 2023 . Keep an eye out for future offers on this card.

If you’re considering signing up for the National Bank® World Elite® Mastercard®, now is a great time. The card currently comes with a welcome bonus of up to 70,000 À la Carte Rewards points and offers cardholders benefits such as $150 in annual travel credits , along with the annual fee reimbursed in the first year, through our exclusive offer link .

The National Bank® World Elite® Mastercard® is a strong card on many levels. With a high earning rate of 5 À la carte rewards points per dollar spent on groceries and restaurants, it even makes our list of best credit cards for grocery purchases in Canada .

But one of the most standout features that drives me to use the card on travel purchases is the insurance benefits package, which is competitive in all categories and even best-in-class in some. Couple this with the flexibility to be covered when making award bookings and you’ve got a winning combination.

If i get Covid while Im travelling will my basic insurance cover .If there is a need of hospitalization

What do you mean by ‘basic insurance’? If you mean the out-of-province hospital medical insurance offered by credit cards, it depends on the card. Check the certificate of insurance details or call in to confirm. But also FYI medical insurance offered by credit cards is typically separate from award travel in that you don’t need to have charged the trip/flight/hotels to the card. So you could look to any of your credit cards to see if this coverage is offered.

HSBC may be lacking in some coverage, but they are the only card to offer out of province medical insurance for cardholders over 65 for a maximum of 21 days.

Best credit cards for airport lounge access in April 2024

Stepping into an airport lounge from the chaotic main terminal can feel like stepping onto dry land from a whitewater raft. It evokes a feeling of peace, tranquility and “phew – we made it.”

As a result, airport lounge access is one of the most enviable perks you can get with a travel rewards credit card. But which cards still offer it in 2024, and from that list, which are still worth getting?

The best cards for airport lounge access in April 2024

Best overall: capital one venture x rewards credit card, best for extensive lounge access: the platinum card® from american express, best for affordable lounge access: u.s. bank altitude® connect visa signature® card, best for delta: delta skymiles® reserve american express card, best for united: united club℠ infinite card, best for american airlines: citi® / aadvantage® executive world elite mastercard®.

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card offers unlimited complimentary access for you and two guests to a wide lounge network comprising Capital One Lounges, Priority Pass and Plaza Premium Group. Plus, its $395 annual fee is easy to recoup on account of the $300 back annually for bookings made through Capital One Travel plus 10,000 bonus miles (equal to $100 towards travel) every year, starting on your first anniversary.

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card

Intro bonus.

travel insurance world mastercard

Rewards Rates

  • 10X 10x miles on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel
  • 5X 5x miles on flights booked through Capital One Travel
  • 2X 2x miles on everyday purchases
  • Annual $300 travel credit and 10,000 Miles upon card anniversary make up for the annual fee
  • Airport lounge access
  • Capital One Miles require effort to maximize
  • Limited cash redemption options

Other benefits

  • Travel protections including car rental insurance, trip cancellation/interruption and travel delay protection
  • Consumer protections including extended warranty and return protection

Why we like this card: We like how the Capital One Venture X comes with a hefty 75,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 on purchases within the first 3 months from account opening, unlimited complimentary access for you and two guests to 1,300+ airport lounges, including Capital One Lounges and our Partner Lounge Network, and 10x miles on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel.

The $395 annual fee may seem steep, but it’s actually a relative bargain among premium travel cards offering unlimited lounge access. Plus, you’ll earn $300 back annually for bookings made through Capital One Travel plus 10,000 bonus miles (equal to $100 towards travel) every year, starting on your first anniversary–a combined $400 in travel value–which instantly covers your fee for the year.

The cherry on top is up to $100 credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck®, so you can scoot through security and get to the lounge a little faster. All things considered, the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is the airport lounge card to beat.

The Platinum Card® from American Express claims to have the widest lounge access of any card on the market, with access to well over 1,500 lounge locations in over 140 countries. Combine that with a list of travel-centric benefits longer than a CVS receipt, and it’s an easy pick for this list.

The Platinum Card® from American Express

Reward Rates

  • 5X Earn 5x Membership Rewards® Points for flights booked directly with airlines or with American Express Travel (up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year)
  • 5X Earn 5x Membership Rewards® Points on prepaid hotels booked with American Express Travel
  • 1X Earn 1x points on all other eligible purchases
  • Packed with valuable potential credits for digital entertainment, Equinox gym, Walmart+ membership, and more.
  • Airport lounge access with a larger network than any other card
  • Membership Rewards are valuable due to their flexibility.
  • The multiple potential credits can be cumbersome to track.
  • Sky-high annual fee
  • Some of the perks can be hard to use if they don’t align with your lifestyle.
  • Travel benefits including hotel and car rental chain statuses, car rental insurance, trip cancellation/interruption and travel delay protection

Why we like this card: Like a fully-loaded Mercedes S-Class, The Platinum Card® from American Express comes with an eye-watering price tag but an expansive list of benefits to justify it.

Naturally, one of those benefits is airport lounge access. You’ll have access to Amex’s Global Lounge Collection, which includes the Centurion Network, Delta Sky Club, Lufthansa Lounge, Plaza Premium Lounge and Priority Pass Select. That’s 1,500+ lounges in total, meaning an Amex Platinum is the closest we have to an airport lounge master key.

You’ll also get up to $189 back per year on a CLEAR® Plus membership (subject to auto-renewal) when you use your Platinum Card®, up to $200 in statement credits per calendar year when incidental fees are charged by the airline to your card, up to $20 back in statement credits each month on eligible purchases made with your Platinum Card® on one or more of the following: Disney+, a Disney Bundle, ESPN+, Hulu, The New York Times, Peacock, and The Wall Street Journal (enrollment required), up to $200 back in statement credits each year on prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts® or The Hotel Collection bookings with American Express Travel when you pay with your Platinum Card® (minimum 2-night stay required) and a welcome bonus of at least 80,000 Membership Rewards® Points after spending $8,000 on purchases on the Card in your first 6 months of card membership, so there are plenty of ways to extract value from your “Plat” outside of an airport lounge.

Amex Centurion Lounge Atlanta review Best travel credit cards

The U.S. Bank Altitude® Connect VISA Signature® Card card includes four free visits to over 1,500 Priority Pass locations worldwide, a $100 TSA PreCheck/Global Entry credit and a $500 welcome bonus–all for a modest annual fee of $95, which is waived for the first year.

U.S. Bank Altitude Connect

travel insurance world mastercard

  • 5x 5X points on prepaid hotels and car rentals booked directly in the Altitude Rewards Center
  • 4x 4X points on travel, at gas stations and EV charging stations
  • 2x 2X points at grocery stores, grocery delivery, dining and streaming services
  • 1x 1X on all other purchases
  • High earnings on travel
  • No annual fee the first year
  • 4 Priority Pass lounge visits per year
  • Points not transferable to travel partners
  • Additional perks: Cell phone protection, Trip cancellation/interruption, TSA/Global Entry fee rebate
  • Foreign transaction fee: None

Why we like this card: As an affordable travel rewards card, U.S. Bank’s Altitude Connect card is a worthy rival to the reigning Chase Sapphire Preferred ® Card . Unlike the “CSP,” the U.S. Bank Altitude® Connect VISA Signature® Card includes complimentary Priority Pass Select membership with four airport lounge passes, a $100 credit towards TSA PreCheck or Global Entry and up to 4X on travel purchases.

The card also waives its $95 annual fee for the first year and offers a hefty welcome bonus of 50,000 bonus points after spending $2,000 in the first 120 days worth $500 towards travel and more. In short, it’s positively packed with value for travelers, and if you’re not sure whether you’ll even visit a lounge more than four times this year, it’s a logical choice.

The Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card offers Delta fans a truly elevated experience, with 15 visits to the Delta Sky Club per year, four guest passes, free checked bags, an Annual Companion Certificate, upgrade priority and more. It doesn’t include automatic Medallion status, but offers plenty of ways to to get there faster (e.g. MQD Headstart).

Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card

Intro bonus.

travel insurance world mastercard

  • 3x Earn 3X Miles on Delta purchases
  • 1x Earn 1X Mile on all other eligible purchases.
  • Premium benefits for Delta flyers, like first checked bag free and access to the Delta Sky Club
  • Companion certificate good for a round trip domestic Main Cabin, Comfort+ or First Class flight each year upon renewal of your card
  • Access to Centurion Lounge network
  • High annual fee
  • Access to Delta Sky Club limited to 15 passes a year after February 2025
  • Base earnings rate is low compared to other cards
  • 15% discount on Delta award flights
  • Travel protections including accident insurance, rental car coverage, trip cancellation and delay insurance
  • Consumer protections including cell phone insurance, extended warranty, purchase and return protection

Why we like this card: Though it charges a heart-stopping $650 annual fee, the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card does include a 60,000 Bonus Miles after you spend $5,000 in purchases on your new Card in your first 6 months of Card Membership to help cover your first two years with the card. You’ll also get 3X Miles on Delta purchases, 15% off award travel, a free first checked bag, a $240 Resy Credit, $200 Delta Stays statement credit and more to make the card’s high fee more palatable.

In terms of lounge access, the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card includes 15 visits to the Delta Sky Club per year. That’s objectively pretty stingy considering there are cheaper cards on the market offering unlimited access to a larger network for both you and multiple guests. Still, if you’re a solo Delta traveler, 15 visits to the Delta Sky Club per year may be all you need.

The United Club℠ Infinite Card may charge $525 per year, but it covers a United Club membership–which alone retails for $650–and includes a litany of other travel-friendly benefits like Free first and second checked bags - a savings of up to $320 per roundtrip (terms apply) - and Premier Access® travel services, 4 miles per $1 spent on United® purchases and 80,000 bonus miles after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening.

United Club℠ Infinite Card

travel insurance world mastercard

  • 4x 4 miles per $1 spent on United® purchases
  • 2x 2 miles per $1 spent on all other travel and dining
  • 1x 1 mile per $1 spent on all other purchases
  • United Club lounge membership
  • Valuable welcome bonus
  • Path to earn elite airline status by card spend
  • Mostly useful if you want lounge access
  • Additional perks: Primary rental car coverage, trip cancellation/interruption insurance, trip delay reimbursement, baggage delay insurance, lost luggage reimbursement

Why we like this card: If you and your travel companion frequently fly United, check multiple bags each and relish the thought of decompressing in the United Club lounge, the United Club℠ Infinite Card might deserve a place in your wallet.

That’s because the card’s marquis feature is a $650 United Club membership, granting unlimited access for you and your travel companions. You’ll also get Free first and second checked bags - a savings of up to $320 per roundtrip (terms apply) - and Premier Access® travel services, 4 miles per $1 spent on United® purchases, 25% back on food/beverage/Wi-Fi purchases and 80,000 bonus miles after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening.

Once the welcome bonus dries up it can be hard to continue justifying the United Club℠ Infinite Card‘s $525 annual fee–especially since you can only take advantage of the card’s best benefits while traveling with United. The lack of Polaris Lounge access is a bummer, too. But if you’re a hardcore brand loyalist who doesn’t travel light, the United Club℠ Infinite Card could still be a worthy travel companion.

With complimentary Admirals Club membership (valued up to $850), up to nine free checked bags per trip and an “enhanced airport experience,” the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® rolls out the figurative red carpet for AA frequent flyers.

Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard®

  • 10x Earn 10X AAdvantage miles on eligible hotels booked through aa.com/hotels and on eligible car rentals booked through aa.com/cars.
  • 4x 4x AAdvantage® miles for every $1 spent on eligible American Airlines purchases (5X after you spend $15,000 on airfare)
  • 1x 1x AAdvantage miles on all other purchases
  • Earns AAdvantage miles, which are not easily accessible outside of co-branded AAdvantage credit cards.
  • Every dollar spent earns one Loyalty Point toward elite status.
  • Includes Admirals Club lounge membership, valued at up to $850.
  • High spending requirement for earning the 70,000-mile welcome bonus
  • No category bonuses outside of American Airlines spending.
  • Travel perks: AAdvantage club membership, checked bag benefit, trip cancellation and interruption protection
  • Credits: Up to $120 annual credit to Avis or Budget rental cars, Up to $10 monthly credits to Lyft and Grubhub

Why we like this card: If you’re ready to pledge fealty to American Airlines via a $595 rewards card, you’ll be receiving plenty of perks and value in return from the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard®. For starters, you’ll get a complimentary Admirals Club membership and free first checked bags for you and up to eight travel companions–saving up to $720 per round trip.

You’ll also get 70,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles after spending $7,000 within the first 3 months of account opening, 25% savings on inflight purchases of food and beverages on flights and 10X AAdvantage® miles on hotels booked through aa.com/hotels. But perhaps most intriguingly, the card unlocks an “enhanced airport experience” with priority check-in, screening and boarding when flying with AA.

Just keep in mind that Admirals Club membership only includes access to 50ish Admirals Clubs and 60ish partner lounge locations total, so you may want to confirm that there’s one in your home airport before committing.

Frequently asked questions

Which card is best for airport lounge access.

The Platinum Card® from American Express has the most expansive lounge access, with unlimited visits to locations within the Centurion Network, Delta Sky Club, Lufthansa Lounge, Plaza Premium Lounge and Priority Pass Select.

However, we think the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card offers better value, with access to Capital One Lounges, Priority Pass and Plaza Premium Group locations for a $395 annual fee ($300 less than the Platinum).  If you are looking for a lower price tag, check out our article about the best cards for cheap airport lounge access .

Are lounge access cards worth it?

A rewards card with airport lounge access could be worth it if you fly several times a year, value having a secluded place to work, and relax and plan to take advantage of the card’s other benefits.

Some say that the most underrated perk of airport lounges is having access to a dedicated airline representative inside. That way, you can skip the long customer service line outside if something goes wrong with your travel plans.

How do I know if my credit card has lounge access?

Check your card benefits, which can usually be found online following a quick search. While you’re there, check to see if any of the included lounge networks require you to register your membership in advance–that way, you can save time and hassle at the airport.

Methodology

Fortune Recommends surveyed all the cards still offering airport lounge access in 2024 and handpicked the very best. In evaluating cards that offer airport lounge access, we compared the annual fees to the amount of lounge access provided. From the card granting access to the most locations worldwide to another charging a mere $95 annual fee ($0 for the first year), we found the best credit cards for airport lounge access in 2024.

The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card * -- Wells Fargo’s latest and best travel card -- recently launched with an impressive set of features. Its competitive rewards, welcome bonus and redemption options take aim at incumbent travel credit cards from Chase, American Express and Capital One.

What gives Wells Fargo’s first foray into the point-transfer space an edge is that you don’t have to book travel in a portal to earn the highest rewards rates.

Here’s why we think the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey could go toe-to-toe with some of the best travel credit cards, plus three insider tips to help you decide if you should add it to your credit card lineup.

Here’s a quick overview of what you can expect with the Autograph Journey:

  • Earn 60,000 welcome bonus rewards points after spending $4,000 in purchases within three months of account opening.
  • Earn unlimited 5x points on hotels, 4x points on airlines, 3x points on other travel and dining and 1x on other purchases.
  • Receive an annual statement credit with a $50 minimum airline purchase.
  • No foreign transaction fees.
  • Other benefits include trip cancellation and interruption insurance, lost luggage reimbursement, roadside dispatch and cell phone insurance.
  • $95 annual fee.

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

Here’s a rundown of four facts we discovered about the Autograph Journey that you should know when deciding whether to apply.

1. You can transfer points with Wells Fargo point-based cards

The launch of the Autograph Journey also marks the first transferable points program from Wells Fargo, which joins other card issuers like Chase and Capital One, which have their own pooling programs .

Autograph Journey will be able to do a points transfer with the no-annual-fee Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card . This is especially notable since the Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card offers bonus rewards in different categories than the Autograph Journey.

For example, the Autograph card earns unlimited 3x points on restaurants, travel, gas stations, transit, popular streaming services and phone plans, plus 1x points on other purchases. So you can maximize your point earning across different categories, then transfer your points to your Autograph Journey account to access premium travel redemptions.

2. It offers more options for earning bonus miles on travel than some competitors

The Autograph Journey will offer more flexibility than many travel rewards cards when it comes to earning more points on travel purchases. For example, cardholders earn unlimited 5x points on hotels booked directly with hotel brands and 4x points on airfare booked with airlines.

This helps the card stand out from other popular travel credit cards that offer the most bonus points only if you book travel through their portals. For example, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card * and the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card * only offer the highest bonus rewards on travel booked through Capital One Travel. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card also offers its highest rate of 5x points on travel booked through Chase Travel℠, whereas other travel purchases earn 2x points.

Autograph Journey cardholders also earn a minimum of 3x points on other travel purchases, which could include rental cars, cruises and travel booked through online travel agencies like Expedia and Priceline.

3. The card may grow in value as more transfer partners join

The Autograph Journey Card will earn flexible travel rewards points that transfer to a selection of airline and hotel partners, similar to Amex Membership Rewards points or Chase Ultimate Rewards . While the list of transfer partners is limited, Wells Fargo stated in its initial press release that “more partners will continue to be added throughout the year.”

Points transfers could dramatically change the value proposition of the Autograph Journey, especially if new partners include domestic airlines and popular hotel loyalty programs.

Wells Fargo point transfers will be available to new cardholders starting on April 4. For now, Wells Fargo transfer partners include the following:

How to find the right international travel insurance company

Different travelers and trips require different types of insurance coverage. So, consider these tips if you're in the market to insure your trip.

Determine your needs

  • Consider the nature of your travel (leisure, business, or adventure) and the associated risks (medical emergencies, trip cancellations, etc.).
  • Determine your budget and the amount of coverage you require.
  • Consider the duration of your trip and the countries you'll be visiting, as some policies won't cover specific destinations.

Research the reputation of the company

  • Look for the company's reviews and ratings from reputable sources like consumer advocacy groups and independent website reviews.
  • Check the provider's financial stability and credit ratings to ensure it can pay out claims reliably.
  • Investigate the company's claims process to ensure it can provide timely support if you need to file a claim.

Compare prices

  • Get quotes from multiple providers to compare rates and coverage options.
  • See if the company provides discounts or special offers to lower your cost.
  • Look at the deductible or any out-of-pocket expenses you may have to pay if you file a claim to determine if you can afford it.

Understanding international travel insurance coverage options

Travel insurance can be confusing, but we're here to simplify it for you. We'll break down the industry's jargon to help you understand what travel insurance covers to help you decide what your policy needs. Bear in mind that exclusions and limitations for your age and destination may apply.

Finding the best price for international travel insurance

Your policy cost will depend on several factors, such as the length of your trip, destination, coverage limits, and age. Typically, a comprehensive policy includes travel cancellation coverage costs between 5% and 10% of your total trip cost.

If you're planning an international trip that costs $4,500, you can expect to pay anywhere from $225 to $450 for your policy. Comparing quotes from multiple providers can help you find a budget-friendly travel insurance policy that meets your needs.

How we reviewed international travel insurance companies

We ranked and assigned superlatives to the best travel insurance companies based on our insurance rating methodology . It focuses on several key factors, including:

  • Policy types: We analyzed company offerings such as coverage levels, exclusions, and policy upgrades, taking note of providers that offer a range of travel-related issues beyond the standard coverages.
  • Affordability: We recognize that cheap premiums don't necessarily equate to sufficient coverage. So, we seek providers that offer competitive rates with comprehensive policies and quality customer service. We also call out any discounts or special offers available.
  • Flexibility: Travel insurance isn't one-size-fits-all. We highlight providers that offer a wide array of coverage options, including single-trip, multi-trip, and long-term policies.
  • Claims handling: The claims process should be pain-free for policyholders. We seek providers that offer a streamlined process via online claims filing and a track record of handling claims fairly and efficiently.
  • Quality customer service: Good customer service is as important as affordability and flexibility. We highlight companies that offer 24/7 assistance and have a strong record of customer service responsiveness.

We consult user feedback and reviews to determine how each company fares in each category. We also check the provider's financial rating and volume of complaints via third-party rating agencies.

Which company has the best international travel insurance?

The best insurance policy depends on your individual situation, including your destination and budget. However, popular options include Allianz Travel Insurance, World Nomads, and Travel Guard.

Is international health insurance the same as travel insurance?

International health insurance and travel insurance serve different purposes. While both may cover medical expenses, international health insurance provides long-term health insurance for working abroad. Meanwhile, travel insurance offers short-term coverage for the duration of your trip.

What insurance do you need for international travel?

Typically, your regular health insurance won't cover you out of the country, so you'll want to make sure your travel insurance has adequate medical emergency coverage. Depending on your travel plans, you may want to purchase add-ons, such as adventure sports coverage, if you're planning on doing anything adventurous like bungee jumping.

Should you get travel insurance for international travel?

Travel insurance is worth the price for international travel because they're generally more expensive, so you have more to lose. Additionally, your regular health insurance won't cover you in other countries, so without travel insurance, you'll end up paying out of pocket for any emergency medical care you receive out of the US.
