Train travel UK & Ireland...

Train travel in europe..., train travel in asia..., train travel in africa..., train travel in america..., train travel in australasia, europe to australia without flying....

It's a long way to Oz.  There are two options to get there from the UK without flying:

Option 1, Europe to Australia via the Trans-Siberian Railway .  You can travel by train from London to Moscow, then by Trans-Siberian Railway to China & the Far East, then catch a passenger-carrying freighter (if you can find one!) or cruise ship to Australia.  This is a real adventure, and a popular choice with lots to see on the way.  Not currently feasible because of the war in Ukraine & Russia being off limits .

Option 2, Europe to Australia by sea .  You can go all the way from the UK to Australia or New Zealand by sea, either a leisurely direct voyage by infrequent round-the-world cruise, or by one of the few remaining passenger-carrying freighters, sometimes with the need to switch ships in either the USA or SE Asia.  Expect Europe to Australia by sea to take at least 32-40 days and cost at least £4,000+ one-way by freighter including cabin & meals, much more if you use a cruise.

This page outlines the journey and how to go about putting such a trip together, with links to other pages for more detailed information about each part of the journey.  Please remember this is not a tour or a package, just some guidance in putting your own independent trip together using scheduled train services across Europe and Asia.

Europe to Australia by sea

By freighter or cruise ship.

If you'd been going to Australia in the first half of the 20th century, you could have caught the fortnightly P&O liner from Southampton to Sydney, taking several weeks.  These days there are no regular passenger ships from the UK or Europe to Australia, and your choice is limited to one of these, if currently operating:

There are occasional round-the-world cruises from Europe to Australia, stopping at various places on the way.  Some sail westward around the world via the Panama Canal, others sail eastwards via either the Suez Canal or South Africa and the Cape of Good Hope.  This is the most comfortable but expensive option.

There are freighters which take a limited number of passengers although they are now getting very thin on the ground.  There are a mere handful of direct Europe-Australia freighters which carry a few passengers, or there are freighters from Europe to SE Asia where you can change onto another freighter or a cruise ship from SE Asia to Australia.

You can take the Queen Mary 2 from Europe to New York (or use a passenger-carrying freighter), take a train from coast to coast across the United States , then take a passenger-carrying freighter to Australia from the Pacific seaboard of the USA.

To find out more, and to book a cruise or freighter passage to Australia, try the following sites:

Europe to Australia by Trans-Siberian Railway

Overland to the far east by train.

It's possible to travel most of the way from London to Australia by train via the Trans-Siberian Railway.  In fact, quite a number people travel this way.  Time-wise, we're talking 4-5 weeks one-way, minimum.  But it's a journey of a lifetime.

Update 2024:  There is a war in Ukraine, travel to Russia is inadvisable, there are currently no international trains to Moscow and no Moscow-Beijing trains.

Route, timetable & costs

Travel tickets alone costs only £750 or so from London as far as Singapore, but you must add food, hotels, and tours along the way.  The links below cover travel in either direction, from London to Australia or Australia to London, follow the links to see details of prices and timetables for each section.

Step 1:  London to Moscow by train .  Daily departures taking 2 nights.  Spend at least 1 night in Moscow.

Step 2:  Moscow to Beijing by Trans-Siberian Railway   Two direct trains every week each taking 6 nights.  Spend at least 1 night in Beijing.

Step 3:  Beijing to Hanoi by train A train runs twice a week taking 2 nights, or you can travel any day with a change of train at Nanning.  Spend at least 1 night in Hanoi.

Step 4:  Hanoi to Saigon by train   Several trains daily, 2 nights.  Why not stop off to see Hue or Hoi An?  Spend at least 1 night in Saigon.

Step 5:  Saigon-Phnom Penh by bus Daily, 1 day.  Spend at least 1 night in PP.

Step 6:  Phnom Penh-Bangkok by bus to the border at Poiphet, then local train from Aranyaprathet to Bangkok .

Step 7:  Bangkok to Singapore by train .  Daily, 2 nights.

Step 8:  The final sea voyage from Asia to Australia is the problem:

You can get from Singapore as far as Bali in Indonesia by scheduled ferry, train, ferry & bus using the ferries from Singapore to Jakarta , see the Indonesia page .  But there are no regular passenger ships to Australia from Singapore or Indonesia or anywhere in the Far East .  And don't bother trying to island hop down to Dili in East Timor, it may look the closest land to Darwin, but there are absolutely no ferries of any kind from there to Australia.

You therefore need an infrequent passenger-carrying freighter for the last leg from Southeast Asia to Australia.  There are one or two Asia-Australia freighters that will carry passengers.  They have very very few passenger places and get booked up, so book early.  Freighter travel is not cheap, with limited places in high demand.  Also bear in mind that schedules can change according to freight requirements, a ship can easily leave a day or two earlier than originally scheduled, so build in plenty of leeway!

Option 1 , shipping company CMA CGM have freight ships which carry a limited number of passengers between Port Klang in Malaysia & Fremantle near Perth in Australia every 46 days or so.  The voyage takes 7-10 days and costs around €1,300 for one person in a private cabin with meals included.  CMA CGM also have ships between Singapore & Brisbane roughly once a month taking 14 days.  Contact them directly via their website, www.voyagesencargo.com .  Various agencies can also book this freighter route for you, presumably with an added fee or mark-up, such as thecruisepeople.wordpress.com & www.traveltips.com .

Option 2 , try German agency www.slowtravel-experience.com who can offer infrequent sailings between Singapore & Fremantle near Perth on the ship MOL Guardian .

Option 3 , try Swiss company www.globoship.ch .  They have twice-monthly freighter sailings from Singapore to Fremantle (Perth) taking 7 days.  Their website is in German, so use Google language tools to translate it.  They also have a monthly Singapore-Melbourne freighter taking 15 days.

Feedback on freighter booking & travel would be appreciated.

How to plan & arrange this trip

There aren't any travel agencies who can arrange the whole trip from Europe to Australia, so you will need to plan and arrange each stage of the journey yourself.  It's an exercise in project management, and I use a simple spreadsheet technique like this to plan an itinerary and budget.  Unless time is absolutely no object, you should book the key sections in advance through various travel agencies, for example, book London-Moscow as shown on the London to Russia page , then book Moscow-Beijing & Beijing-Hanoi through a local Russian agency such as www.realrussia.co.uk or Svezhy Veter.  You also need to pre-book the freighter from Asia to Australia, as places are limited.  Tickets for other parts of the trip, for example, Hanoi-Saigon-Phnom Penh-Bangkok can all be bought locally, as you go along.  The place to start is the sea section from Asia to Australia, as that will determine the dates for the rest of the trip.

You'll need to pre-arrange visas for Belarus, Russia, possibly Mongolia, China & Vietnam.  Cambodian visas can be obtained at the frontier.  In many ways, complying with the various visa requirements (and in some cases, requirements for confirmed onward tickets to be held) is actually the biggest hassle, not buying the tickets for the trains, so check this out carefully using the relevant embassy websites.

So where do you start?

First, read through the seat61 pages linked above, as these explain the options for each stage of the journey.

Then sketch out your itinerary using a simple spreadsheet like this , deciding where and for how long you want to stop off.

Next, check out the visa situation for each country.

Finally, follow the advice on each seat61 page to buy tickets for each train journey that you want to pre-book.

So, let’s get started on your adventure!

Table of Contents

Short Answer

Yes, it is possible to travel by boat from the United Kingdom to Australia.

It is a long journey that can take several weeks or even months depending on the boat and the route taken.

There are several ferry services operating routes between the UK and Australia, or you can charter a private boat for the journey.

It is also possible to participate in a sailing race across the world to Australia, which generally takes anywhere from 4-9 months depending on the route and the type of boat used.

Types of Vessels

When it comes to taking a boat from the United Kingdom to Australia, there are a variety of vessels available for the journey.

Depending on your budget, preferences, and the duration of the trip, you can choose from a wide range of vessels.

For cost-conscious travelers, cargo ships are the most economical option.

Cargo ships are designed for the transport of goods and are usually the fastest and cheapest way to get from the UK to Australia.

While you wont have the same amenities as you would on a luxury cruise liner, youll still be able to experience the beauty of the open ocean.

For those looking for a more luxurious experience, there are several luxury cruise liners that offer voyages from the UK to Australia.

These trips can take up to a month, but the amenities are well worth it.

From on-board entertainment and activities, to gourmet meals and comfortable cabins, a luxury cruise is the perfect way to travel in style.

If youre looking for a more adventurous journey, you can also charter a private vessel for your trip.

This can be a great option for those with the budget and time to spare.

Private vessels allow for more flexibility in terms of destinations, activities, and timelines.

You can customize your journey to your exact specifications and have a truly unique experience.

No matter which vessel you choose, its important to do plenty of research before making a decision.

Be sure to read reviews, speak to other travelers, and compare prices to ensure you get the best deal for your voyage.

UK Ports of Departure

When planning a voyage from the UK to Australia, there are several ports of departure from which to choose.

The most popular ports of departure for boats traveling to Australia from the UK include Dover, Poole, Portsmouth, and other British ports.

Dover is located on the English Channel and is the closest port to the continent, making it a natural choice for those looking to get to Australia quickly.

Poole is located on the south coast of England and is a major port for commercial shipping.

Portsmouth is located on the south eastern coast of England and is the UKs second busiest port.

Other ports of departure may be available depending on the type of vessel and route, so its important to do research and compare options before booking a voyage.

Voyage Duration

The duration of a voyage from the United Kingdom to Australia by boat will depend on the type of vessel chosen and the route taken.

A cargo ship typically takes two weeks to reach its destination, while a luxury cruise liner can take up to a month for the same journey.

For those seeking a faster voyage, there are a few options available.

Sailboats, which are powered by the wind, can make the journey in a few weeks, while faster motor vessels can reach Australia in as little as two weeks.

However, these vessels can be expensive and may not be suitable for all budgets.

Smaller boats, such as yachts, can also be used for the journey, but they can take longer than larger vessels due to their limited speed.

On average, the journey by yacht can take three to four weeks, depending on the route and weather conditions.

The length of the journey also depends on the route taken.

The most direct route is to sail south from the United Kingdom and through the Mediterranean Sea before heading east across the Indian Ocean.

This route can take up to a month, depending on the type of vessel and the weather conditions.

Alternatively, the journey can be made by sailing east from the UK and through the Suez Canal before heading south across the Indian Ocean.

This route typically takes around four weeks, depending on the type of vessel and the weather conditions.

Finally, the journey can be made by sailing around the Cape of Good Hope and through the Indian Ocean.

This route can take up to five weeks, depending on the type of vessel and the weather conditions.

No matter what type of vessel or route is chosen, the journey from the United Kingdom to Australia is an adventure of a lifetime and can be a great way to explore the world.

Cost of Voyage

When planning a voyage from the United Kingdom to Australia, one of the most important factors to consider is the cost.

The cost of the voyage will vary depending on the type and duration of the voyage.

Generally speaking, a cargo ship will be the cheapest option, with costs ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand pounds.

For those looking for a more luxurious experience, a luxury cruise liner will be the more expensive option, with fares typically ranging from a few thousand to tens of thousands of pounds.

It’s important to note that the cost of the voyage will also be affected by the number of passengers, the type of cabin, and any additional services such as meals, entertainment, and shore excursions.

For those travelling with a group or family, it’s worth looking into special deals as these can often provide significant savings.

Additionally, for those travelling on a budget, it is possible to find discounted fares on certain routes if booked in advance.

Finally, it is important to remember that the cost of the voyage does not include the cost of visas or any other associated fees.

It is recommended to research the visa requirements for the destination country before booking a voyage, as this can significantly increase the cost of the trip.

Necessary Documents

When embarking on a journey from the UK to Australia by boat, it is important to ensure that you have the necessary documents.

Depending on the vessel, you may be required to provide a valid passport, visa, proof of vaccinations, and a valid maritime certificate.

If you are travelling on a passenger vessel, you will likely need to provide proof of citizenship or residency.

Additionally, you may need to provide proof of financial stability, such as a bank statement, in order to obtain a visa.

If you are travelling on a cargo vessel, you may need to provide a valid bill of lading.

In some cases, it may also be necessary to provide a letter of authorization from the vessels owners.

It is important to check with the vessels owners to ensure that you have all of the necessary documents.

Weather Considerations

When traveling by boat from the UK to Australia, weather conditions should be taken into consideration.

Although the voyage may take place during the summer months when the weather is typically favorable, there are still potential risks associated with ocean crossings.

Keep in mind that storms can arise suddenly, so its important to be prepared with the necessary supplies and clothing for any unexpected contingencies.

Additionally, if the boat is not equipped with the latest navigation and communication technology, it is important to ensure that the crew is well-trained and familiar with the route, as well as the potential risks.

Safety and Health

When it comes to traveling by boat from the United Kingdom to Australia, safety and health should be a top concern.

When embarking on such a long voyage, it is important to make sure that the boat and its crew are up to the task and that all necessary safety precautions are taken.

As such, travelers should research the vessel and crew thoroughly before embarking.

The vessel should be properly maintained and equipped with the necessary safety features, such as lifeboats and life jackets.

The crew should be experienced and certified, and able to handle any potential issues that may arise during the voyage.

Additionally, travelers should make sure to bring all necessary supplies, such as medications and first-aid kits, in case of an emergency.

It is also important to stay up-to-date on all health regulations for the destination country.

Vaccinations and medical certificates may be required for entry into Australia, so travelers should check the Australian government’s website for more information.

Additionally, it is important to check with the destination port for any additional regulations or restrictions that may be in place.

By taking the necessary safety and health precautions, travelers can ensure that their journey from the United Kingdom to Australia is as safe and enjoyable as possible.

Final Thoughts

Traveling by boat from the UK to Australia is an exciting and unique experience.

From cargo ships to luxury cruise liners, there are a variety of vessels and routes available to suit any traveler’s needs.

With careful planning and preparation, you can make your journey as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.

Take the time to familiarize yourself with the necessary documents, weather considerations, and safety and health protocols to ensure a safe and successful voyage.

Bon voyage!

How to Get to Australia without Flying

How to get to Australia without flying

How to get to Australia without flying? Despite its remote location, it is possible to travel to Australia by ship.

In this guide, I’m going through different ways of traveling to Australia without flying. The guide covers flightless routes to Australia from four different continents:

  • America to Australia
  • Asia to Australia
  • Europe to Australia
  • Africa to Australia

In these sections, I’ll explain how to get to Australia without flying on freighters, sailboats, and cruise ships.

Traveling from America to Australia by ship

1. How to Get from America to Australia without flying

How can i get to australia without flying from america.

To travel from the United States – or other parts of America – to Australia, you need to cross the Pacific. There are many ways to do that.

How long does it take to travel from America to Australia on a ship?

Freighter trips and other cruises from the US West Coast to Australia take around three weeks. A journey from Vancouver, Canada, takes a week longer.

I have answered this question more thoroughly in my article “ How Long Does It Take a Cargo Ship to Cross the Pacific “.

And what about sailing?

According to Life of Sailing , sailing from California to Australia takes around 45-60 days. You can expect a similar duration if you start your trip in Central America.

Direct sailing from South America to Australia is far less common. As the world spins, the trade winds around the equator – where Central America is located – blow west. If you head further south, you can expect harsher weather and an opposing wind.

Can I travel from America to Australia on a cargo ship?

Yes, you can! Freighter travel is an interesting and nearly CO2 neutral way of travel . Traveling on a cargo ship usually costs around 100-150 US dollars or euros per day. The price includes all meals and accommodation.

To book a freighter cruise, you can contact a freighter travel agency such as Cargo Ship Voyages , FreighterCruises.com , Freighter Travel (NZ) , or Slowtravel .

However, note that the global COVID pandemic has affected freighter travel. At the time of writing (early 2023), many cargo ships were not taking passengers, and I was unable to find available freighter voyages between the two continents.

In the past, though, passengers were able to travel from Oakland, California, to Sydney, Australia, with a stop in New Zealand on the way. The journey took around 25 days and cost ~2600 US dollars or euros.

I know about the route because I’ve used it myself.

Cargo ship voyage across the Pacific to the US

I traveled from New Zealand to the United States on a freighter during my mostly flightless 2-year trip around the world . You can read more about that voyage in the blog post “ Crossing the Pacific – My Cargo Ship Travel Experience “.

How can I sail from America to Australia?

I am not a sailor, so I’m relying on information from other sources. For more details, check out the following guides:

  • How Long Does it Take to Sail Across the Pacific? (Improvesailing.com)
  • How to Sail from California to Australia (Lifeofsailing.com)
  • Trans Pacific (World Cruising Wiki)

According to experts, the best time to sail from America to Australia is from February to June. This will help you avoid the cyclone season that runs in the South Pacific from November to April.

Popular starting points in America include the Panama Canal, Puerto Vallarta in Mexico and San Francisco or Los Angeles in California. Parts of the most popular passage are also known as Coconut Milk Run or Pacific Puddle Jump . Crossing the Pacific on a sailboat takes around 10-20 weeks.

Common stops along the way include Hawaii, Fiji, and different island countries of the South Pacific.

I don’t own a sailboat. What can I do?

Even if you don’t own a sailboat, you can join someone else’s boat to cross the Pacific. Websites such as Find a Crew and CrewSeekers connect captains with crewmates who are willing to work in exchange for the passage.

Especially on such a long journey, many captains prefer people with experience. If you want, you can take a sailing course or try a shorter trip before the larger undertaking. You can also try splitting your journey into multiple parts.

Can I travel from America to Australia on a cruise ship?

Yes, you can travel from America to Australia on a cruise ship. At the time of writing, the website Seascanner listed 22 cruises from the Americas to Australia . However, some of those cruises depart from Hawaii or take a detour in Asia.

A vast majority of the cruises departed from the United States. Three cruises start their voyage in Vancouver, Canada. Only one of the available cruises departs from South America. The MSC Magnifica cruise ship begins its journey from Buenos Aires, Argentina, on the east coast of South America.

That journey takes 51 days and costs over 12,000 dollars. If possible, you could save time and money by joining the cruise later in South America. The most direct cruises from America to Australia take 21-26 days.

Is going on a cruise better than flying?

If you avoid flying for environmental reasons, you should know that cruises tend to cause more emissions than flights . If you’re worried about the carbon footprint of your travels, you may consider compensating the damage.

Carbon offsetting isn’t very effective , so it’s better to support initiatives suggested by Giving Green instead. For example, you can donate 10% of your ticket price to a high-impact organization.

How to travel from Asia to Australia without flying

2. How to Travel from Asia to Australia by Ship

Can i get to australia on a ship from asia.

Yes, you can. If you want to get to Australia from another continent without flying, Asia is the closest point of departure for ships and boats. Still, traveling from Asia to Australia on a ship is not as simple as one might hope.

Are there any direct ferries from Asia to Australia?

If you look at the map, you’ll notice that parts of Indonesia, Timor Leste and Papua New Guinea are fairly close from the northern coast of Australia.

Darwin, the capital city of Australia’s Northern Territory, lies only 600 kilometers (~400 miles) away from Timor Leste. The distance between Papua New Guinea’s capital, Port Moresby, and the northernmost point of mainland Australia is 500 kilometers (~300 miles).

But despite some short distances, there are no regular ferries from Asia to Australia. There are many logical reasons for this.

First of all, Australia’s Northern Territory and the closest parts of Southeast Asia are not very densely populated or popular with tourists. With little interaction, there is no reason for ferries in the area. Australia’s tight border control may have an impact, too.

Can I travel from Bali to Australia on a boat?

The island of Bali, Indonesia, is popular with Australian tourists and other travelers. Still, there are no direct ferries between Bali and Australia.

Here’s an example of an online thread where someone asks about flightless connections between Indonesia and Australia. As an answer, they got over 60 replies with tons of trolling and ridicule but very little help. You can take that as a no.

However, some cruises from Asia to Australia make a stop in Bali. I’ve written more about these cruises at the end of this section.

If you’re very lucky, you might be able to find a sailboat on Findacrew.net that you could join. Armin from easybackpacker.com did this in 2012. According to him, the journey takes around two weeks.

If you’re not strictly flightless but want to minimize flying, you can catch a plane from Bali or to Darwin. This is what I did during my trip around the world. For an even shorter flight, take a direct 700 kilometer flight from Dili in Timor Leste to Darwin.

How can I travel from Darwin to other parts of Australia?

From Darwin, you can continue your journey on Greyhound long-distance coaches or The Ghan train service . Just note that the distances from Darwin are very, very long.

A coach trip from Darwin to Alice Springs in Central Australia – and close to Uluru – takes 18 hours. If you continue your journey to Adelaide in South Australia, the ride takes twice as long.

Greyhound bus Adelaide to Alice Springs Australia

The touristy Ghan train offers a more comfortable yet slower and more expensive journey: it takes three days and two nights to travel from Darwin to Adelaide on rails.

Traveling from Indonesia to Australia by sea is very difficult. Luckily there are other ways to reach Australia without flying.

Som how can I get to Australia without flying from Asia?

To travel from Asia to Australia without flying, you have three basic options: cargo ships, cruises, and boats. All methods work, but don’t be surprised by the long travel times – most ships arrive in the big cities in the east of Australia, increasing the distance.

Traveling from Asia to Australia on a cargo ship

If you want to leave Asia on a freighter, Singapore is one of the best starting points. Still, it is not the only one, and you can hop on a freighter to Australia in my ports on the Pacific coast of Asia. Here are a few possible routes:

  • Singapore to Fremantle (Western Australia), 9 days, ~1100 euros
  • Singapore to Brisbane, 13 days, ~1700 euros
  • Osaka (Japan) to Melbourne, 23 days, ~3000 euros

The fastest freighters from Asia to Australia take around 9-12 days. Most freighters make several stops in Asia and Australia, allowing you to extend your trip on both ends. On average, freighter trips cost 100-150 US dollars or euros per day, including meals and your own cabin.

Cruises from Asia to Australia

And of course, cruise ships also venture from Asia to Australia. Out of the 16 cruises that I found , 15 leave from Singapore. The last one leaves from the Philippines. The fastest cruises from Singapore to Australia take a bit more than a week with prices starting from 2,000 euros.

However, some of these cruises stop in Bali and Jakarta, Indonesia, along the way. If hopping on board in the middle of the cruise is possible, One could travel from Bali to Perth, Western Australia, in as little as four days.

Sailing from Asia to Australia

Joining a sailboat to travel from Asia to Australia is an option too. However, it is not the most common route. Popular ports of departure might include Singapore and Bali.

At the time of writing, only one crew on Findacrew.net was looking for crewmembers to sail from Asia to Australia. In that case, they were traveling from Phuket, Thailand, to Australia as a part of their world tour.

In 2011, Armin from Easybackpacker.com wrote a short guide about traveling from Asia to Australia on a boat. He was finally able to do it himself, although he makes it clear that finding such boats isn’t as easy as one might hope.

Europe to Australia by boat and overland

3. How to Get from Europe to Australia without Flying

Can i take a ship from europe to australia.

Yes, you can – though it is a long journey. A freighter journey from London to Melbourne takes 45 days and costs 4,500-6,000 euros. For a shorter journey, you can hop aboard in Italy or somewhere else around the Mediterranean. Such change can save over two weeks of travel time – and cut the costs by over 30 %.

What about sailing from Europe to Australia?

That’s an option, too, though it’s a long way. In that case, you’d most likely sail across the Atlantic to the Caribbean, cross the Panama Canal and finally sail across the Pacific. Here’s one story about such a journey. Sailing from Europe to Australia this way would require a minimum of two months.

And are there any cruises from Europe to Australia?

Yes, there are! At the time of writing, Seascanner lists 11 cruises from Europe to Australia . These cruises leave from England, Germany, and Spain. The shortest journeys take about a month and cost around 8,000 euros or US dollars per cabin.

Can I go from Europe to Australia through Asia or America?

Yes, of course. In that case, you can start with one of my two other flightless travel guides:

  • How to Get from Europe to America by Ship
  • How to Get from Europe to Asia by Train (+ More Flightless Routes)

Those two guides offer ideas for the first leg of the trip. After reaching your continent of choice, you can continue your journey as described in the first parts of this travel guide.

Take a cruise or sail from Africa to Australia

4. How to Get to Australia without Flying from Africa

How to get to australia without flying from africa.

It is possible to get from Africa to Australia on a boat or a ship. However, such journeys are not very popular. In most cases, it’s better to start your journey in South Africa.

Here’s more information about sailing routes, cruises and freighter routes from Africa to Australia.

How to sail from Africa to Australia

To sail from Africa to Australia, you need to cross the Indian Ocean. Unfortunately the trade winds near the equator work against you as they push from east to west. Because of this, it’s best to start in southern Africa and sail a southern – and colder – route.

The World Cruising Wiki has some more information about sailing from South Africa to Australia.

Are there any cruises from Africa to Australia?

There are not many cruises from Africa to Australia. Website Seascanner lists two cruises from Africa to the Land Down Under. The cruises start in Cape Town and reach Perth in Western Australia in seven days. Cabins start at around 4,700 euros.

Traveling from Africa on a freighter

It might be possible to take a cargo ship voyage from Africa to Australia. However, there’s little information available about such journeys. If any voyages are available, they would most likely leave from Cape Town or Durban in South Africa.

The container ship I mentioned in the European section above makes stops in Egypt, Mauritius, and Réunion. However, no embarking is allowed on Egypt, and the island nations of Mauritius and Réunion are far away from continental Africa.

You can, however, reach Australia with a combination of a cruise and a freighter. According to some sources , a cruise from Cape Town to Mauritius takes four days if available. From Mauritius, you can take a freighter to Australia and reach Sydney in 15 days.

How to Get to Australia without flying

In this guide, I have explained how to get to Australia without flying from different parts of the world. The ocean travel guide is not comprehensive, and it’s based on multiple online sources. Some of the information might be outdated or wrong, so check the facts before you go.

I haven’t listed all possible routes to Australia. Most importantly, I didn’t write full sections about departing from New Zealand and Oceania. Here are short summaries about these routes:

Traveling from New Zealand and Oceania to Australia by Boat

There haven’t been frequent passenger ferries between Australia and New Zealand since the 1960s. Luckily cruises , sailboats and freighters travel between the nations.

In the case of Oceania, you might be able to hitch a ride on a sailboat if you place a message on the notice board of a local sailing club. I did this in the Royal Suva Yacht Club in Fiji, and I was offered a journey to Australia.

Entry requirements

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Australia set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact Australia’s High Commission in the UK.

COVID-19 rules

You do not need a pre-departure COVID-19 test to enter or transit Australia regardless of your COVID-19 vaccination status. See the Australian government’s website for advice on COVID-19 and travelling.

COVID-19 quarantine requirements

Each state and territory determines its own quarantine rules. You should check requirements for specific states and territories .

Passport validity requirements

For entry into Australia, your passport should be valid for the proposed duration of your stay. If you’re transiting another country on your way to or from Australia, check the entry requirements for that country. Many countries will only allow entry if you have at least 6 months validity remaining on your passport.

Visa requirements

British citizens can usually get the following types of electronic visitor visa:

  • eVisitor visa . There is no visa application charge or service fee
  • Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) via the iOS App or Android App . There is no visa application charge, but a service fee of A$20 may apply

Information on all other types of visa is available from the Department of Home Affairs .

Working holiday visa

Thousands of Britons travel to Australia each year on a working holiday visa and the vast majority have no issues. Working conditions, accommodation and medical facilities are generally of a good standard.

You can find information about your rights as an employee in Australia and how to report any concerns about unfair or unlawful treatment on the Fair Work Ombudsman website , or by calling 131 394.

Get more information about working in Australia .

Dual nationals

If you’re a British national living in Australia with Australian citizenship, or a dual national, it is best to leave and enter Australia on your Australian passport. You could face difficulties and delays if you do not. See Australian government advice for dual nationals .

Vaccination requirements (other than COVID-19)

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need in TravelHealthPro’s Australia guide .

Quarantine of goods

Australia has strict quarantine rules to keep out pests and diseases that could affect plant, animal or human health.

You must fill out an Incoming Passenger Card and either:

  • declare any risk goods including food, animal products and plant material (including wooden articles)
  • dispose of any risk goods in the bins at the airport or sea port

All luggage is x-rayed on arrival. Any items of concern are further inspected, treated and if necessary confiscated and destroyed. You can be heavily fined for breaches of quarantine regulations.

You can find more information on the Department of Agriculture website .

You will also be asked to declare whether you have ‘visited a rural area, or been in contact with, or near, farm animals outside Australia in the past 30 days’.

  • After you've acquired your free instant quote , placed your order and chosen suitable delivery and collection dates, our team will deliver the empty containers or MoveCube® to your home, ready for you to pack with your possessions. To help the transportation process run smoothly, please write your name and job number on at least one side of each box.

  • Finally, our international shippers will safely transport your items for delivery to Australia. However, if you prefer, we can notify you when your shipment arrives so you can collect it from the port our local branch instead.

How long does it take to ship boxes to Australia?

We can ship boxes to Australia from the UK either by a sea or air service. Our sea shipping service is the most cost-effective option, perfect if you're sending a large consignment, but it will take 71 days to reach your destination. Alternatively, if you need your goods promptly, air shipping only takes 14 days, although at a slightly higher cost.

Another fantastic benefit of our international luggage shipping service is our online tracking tool that lets you monitor every step of your shipment's travels, offering further peace of mind.

How much is shipping to Australia?

The best way to get the most accurate price for sending boxes from the UK to Australia is to fill out our free instant shipping quote form. It's quick and easy to submit and will give you a clear breakdown of all costs involved, including customs clearance, warehouse handling, delivery and other related service charges.

Do you have to pay customs duty when shipping luggage overseas to Australia?

Importing personal effects and household items into Australia duty-free can be tricky because each region is governed by its own customs authority. To avoid taxes and customs duties, you must fulfil the following criteria:

  • You're a returning Aussie citizen or a visitor with a long-stay/permanent residence visa, returning permanently after more than 12 months outside the country.
  • You must either be present in the country or planning to return within six months of your shipment's arrival.
  • You must have owned the items you're importing for more than twelve months, and they should not be for resale, gifts, leasing, disposing or any commercial purpose.

What items can't your delivery service ship to Australia from the UK?

To protect the health of their citizens and unique flora and fauna, the Australian government's Department of Agriculture and Water Resources enforces strict regulations regarding household goods that might contain soil, dirt and other contaminants. To help guarantee their entry to the country, please ensure the following items are clean and dry before packing and are easily accessible in case Australian customs officials need to inspect them:

  • Sports equipment: golf clubs and bags, cricket gear, fishing rods, bicycles, surfboards, mountaineering ropes etc.
  • Camping tools: walking sticks, tents, poles and pegs, camping chairs etc.
  • Shoes and boots: when shipping boxes, bags or suitcases to Australia, please ensure you pack all footwear, such as hiking boots, golf shoes, trainers etc., at the top of the container with their soles facing upwards, so they are visible for inspection.

Also, along with other commonly restricted items, such as alcohol, tobacco products, food, drugs and narcotics, pirated goods and weapons or replica weapons, Australia prohibits the importation of pain relief head bags and Christmas decorations made of organic materials like wreaths, pinecones and mistletoe, and all candles by air.

Our Prohibited Goods page contains a comprehensive list of all the items you can't send along with certain service-based restrictions.

Can I suggest an alternative route for my shipment?

To ensure your goods arrive via the quickest and most efficient method possible, all shipping and air routes are predefined and cannot be altered.

How to pack for your new country the stress-free way

When shipping boxes to Australia from the United Kingdom, your shipment will travel thousands of miles in many different vehicles. That's why it's so essential you securely wrap your belongings before they are shipped to ensure they reach their destination without any dents or knocks. Here are four easy steps to help you become a packing pro (find more information in our handy packing guides ).

one

Declutter your possessions and assemble the boxes:

When shipping your boxes and bags to Australia, have a declutter before packing to save money and simplify the process. All you need to do is gather the items you're considering sending and separate them into three categories — sell, donate and ship.

Once you've finalised what you're going to pack, order plenty of our ultra-durable boxes, and we'll deliver them flat to your door, ready for you to put together and fill.

two

Wrap items individually and add plenty of padding:

Prevent the contents of your boxes from banging into each other by wrapping everything individually in bubble wrap and packing the heaviest items at the bottom and the lightest at the top.

Lastly, fill any gaps with shock-absorbing materials like foam peanuts, crumpled paper, or more bubble wrap to provide cushioning and help the carton keep its shape.

three

Tape, tape, tape!:

Lots of brown tape is the key to successfully packing your shipping boxes, helping secure and strengthen everything from the bubble wrap encasing your possessions to the containers holding them.

When sealing your boxes, we recommend using the H-tape method, where you place strips over the seams of the carton and down the middle, ensuring there aren't any gaps.

four

Clearly label all of your containers:

Label at least one side of all your boxes with your name and job number, as this will help our staff during shipping, making our service even more seamless and straightforward.

To clear your shipment through customs, we'll also need a detailed inventory of the goods you're sending. Don't worry — you can do this through our online account services, and there are plenty of helpful pointers to assist.

I cannot recommend Seven Seas Worldwide enough. From initial calls about the best form of transport for our needs to arranging the collection and drop off of our items, everyone we interacted with at Seven Seas Worldwide has been a star. We relocated from the UK to Australia and sent our personal belongings with Seven Seas Worldwide. They were efficient, helpful and trustworthy, and the online portal with documents and tracking was fantastic. Highly, highly recommend their service!!! Lauren

Most popular destinations in Australia

Loved for its awe-inspiring landscapes, exotic wildlife (I mean, who doesn't want to cuddle a koala?!) and continuous sunshine, the list of reasons why it's worth moving to Australia is almost as vast as the country itself. Plus, Seven Seas Worldwide operates depots in many of the major cities, including Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, Darwin and Sydney, as well as the island of Tasmania, giving you plenty of scope to explore. See below for our four favourite Aussie destinations.

Map pin

Sydney, New South Wales

Australia's Harbour City is the first stop on many tours of the Land Down Under, and with good reason. From the iconic Sydney Opera House to its globally renowned beaches, this is one place you don't want to miss.

Best time to visit: Oz's springtime, running from September to November, offers the most temperate weather to see the city and fewer tourists.

How to get around: Sydney's public transport services are reasonably priced, reliable and much more convenient than driving. Simply hop on a train, bus or ferry and start exploring.

Neighbourhoods to know: George Street is the main strip and the city's vibrant centre packed with stunning architecture, chic bars and excellent eateries, while the Rocks is home to bustling markets and cosy cafes, and Bondi boasts the most famous stretch of coast on the planet.

Things to do:  While the Opera House and Harbour Bridge (or the Coathanger as the locals call it!) are a must, no trip to Syndey is complete without grabbing the suncream and catching some rays on the white sands of Bondi beach.

Melbourne, Victoria

Situated at the mouth of the Yarra River, which flows into Port Philip Bay, the vibrant city of Melbourne is the country's cultural hub. From snapping pics of the city's street art to catching waves at St. Kilda beach, there's plenty to keep you busy.

Best time to visit: Although the weather is at its hottest peak during Australia's summer months, December to February, the city buzzes with countless outdoor events and festivals.

How to get around:  The City Circle Tram is the easiest method to see Melbourne's top sites, including the central district and Docklands — plus, it's free!

Neighbourhoods to know:  The CBD (Central Business District) is where you'll find Melbourne's most popular attractions. However, Brunswick Street in Fitzroy is a magnet for lovers of vintage clothing and second-hand books, and St Kilda is the place to go to escape the hustle and bustle.

Things to do:  Enjoy spectacular vistas at full speed riding the Scenic Railway, a wooden rollercoaster at the retro Luna Park , spot big cats, butterflies and more at Melbourne Zoo , or marvel at over 70,000 works of art at the National Gallery of Victoria .

Perth, Western Australia

One of the most isolated metropolises in the world, Perth, the sun-soaked capital of Western Australia, is an urban oasis where skyscrapers and busy streets meet lush parks and sparkling seascapes.

Best time to visit: Visit in spring to see Perth's stunning wildflowers in bloom and, if you're lucky, the chance to catch a glimpse of a humpback or blue whale.

How to get around:  With an average of 32,000 hours of sun per year, Perth's incredible weather means walking and cycling around the city are always an enjoyable method to see the sights.

Neighbourhoods to know: Northbridge is the trendiest part of Perth's, full of hole-in-the-wall bars, Instragrammable restaurants and designer boutiques. Whereas South Perth, on the other side of the winding Swan River, is a little quieter and a great place to sit in the shade and take in the city's magnificent skyline.

Things to do: One of the quirkiest attractions to add to your list is the Perth Mint , which documents the history of gold in Oz and displays the world's largest coin, weighing a whopping one-tonne, and lots of bullion and gold nuggets.

Gold Coast, Queensland

Stretching along the southeast of Queensland the glamorous Gold Coast's sun, sand and sea makes it one of Australia's most popular holiday destinations and a mecca for surfers.

Best time to visit: Opt for autumn or winter as summer tends to be the busiest period, with crowds of vacationers flocking to the coast to cool off.

How to get around: Buses, trains and trams run regularly, but a hire car is the best choice to discover the extensive network of hiking trails just outside of the city.

Neighbourhoods to know: The seaside resort of Surfers Paradise is the place to visit if you want to hang ten and catch some waves, whereas the glitz and glamour of Broadbeach is an ideal spot for topping up your tan.

Things to do: If you ever get bored of the Gold Coast's immaculate beaches (unlikely!), the city's also known for its theme parks, including Dreamworld , which combines white-knuckle rides with close-up encounters of native Australian animals.

  • The voyage is also subject to the ever-changing political situation and the COVID-19 pandemic could also affect the journey and stopover ports availability.

It is important to weigh the pros and cons before embarking on such a voyage, and to be well-prepared for the challenges that lie ahead.

How long does it take to sail from UK to Australia?

The sailing time from the UK to Australia can vary greatly depending on factors such as the route taken, the type of vessel, and weather conditions. On average, it can take anywhere from 30 to 60 days to complete the voyage by cargo ship, while a leisurely sail on a yacht could take several months.

What route did ships take from England to Australia?

During the 19th century, ships sailing from England to Australia typically took one of two routes: the southern route around Cape Horn at the tip of South America, or the longer, safer route via the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa.

In modern times, the majority of commercial shipping traffic between the UK and Australia follows a more direct route across the Indian Ocean, bypassing both South Africa and South America. This route is faster and more fuel-efficient, but can still be subject to rough seas and strong winds, particularly during the southern hemisphere’s stormy summer months.

How long did it take to sail from England to Australia in the 1700s?

In the 1700s, sailing from England to Australia was a much longer and more perilous journey than it is today. The voyage could take anywhere from six months to a year or more, depending on various factors such as the route taken, weather conditions, and the speed of the ship.

The journey was often fraught with danger, as ships had to navigate treacherous seas, deal with harsh weather, and face the threat of piracy, disease, and shipwrecks. The ships of the 1700s were also slower and less well-equipped than modern vessels, making the journey even more challenging. Despite these difficulties, many brave sailors undertook the voyage as part of the expansion of the British Empire and the opening up of new lands for trade and settlement.

How long did it take to sail from England to Australia in 1920

In the 1920s, sailing from England to Australia typically took between four and eight weeks, depending on the type of ship and weather conditions. Steam-powered vessels, which were becoming increasingly common at the time, could make the journey in as little as four weeks, while sailing ships could take up to eight weeks or more.

The voyage was still a significant undertaking in the 1920s, and travelers faced many of the same challenges as in previous centuries, including rough seas, storms, and the risk of disease. However, advancements in shipping technology, including the widespread use of steam power and the introduction of more reliable navigation equipment, made the journey faster and safer than in previous eras.

Cost of Cruise from UK to Australia

The cost of a cruise from the UK to Australia can vary greatly depending on factors such as the time of year, the length of the voyage, the type of cabin, and the cruise line.

On average, a typical cruise from the UK to Australia can cost anywhere from £3,000 to £10,000 ($4,000 to $13,000 USD) per person, based on double occupancy. However, prices can be much higher or lower depending on the specific details of the voyage. For example, luxury cruises with top-of-the-line amenities and dining experiences can cost upwards of £20,000 ($26,000 USD) per person, while budget-friendly options may be available for as little as £1,500 ($2,000 USD) per person.

It’s worth noting that this cost only covers the cost of the cruise itself, and does not include additional expenses such as flights to and from the UK, shore excursions, travel insurance, and spending money.

What route did convicts take to Australia?

In the late 1700s and early 1800s, British convicts were transported to the Australian colonies as punishment for their crimes. The journey from England to Australia was a long and difficult one, and took several months to complete.

Most convicts were transported on chartered ships that followed one of two main routes: either via the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa, or around the southern tip of South America, passing through the treacherous waters of the Roaring Forties.

The journey was often marked by poor living conditions on board the ships, including cramped quarters, disease, and harsh discipline. Many convicts did not survive the voyage, and those who did often arrived in Australia in poor health.

Once they arrived in Australia, convicts were put to work building roads, bridges, and public buildings, and were used as a source of cheap labor for the new colonies. Despite the harsh conditions of their transportation and the arduous work they were assigned to do, many convicts went on to make new lives for themselves in Australia, and their descendants have made significant contributions to the development of the country.

How did England send the convicts to Australia?

England sent convicts to Australia in the late 1700s and early 1800s as punishment for their crimes. The British government chartered ships specifically for this purpose, and the convicts were transported to the Australian colonies as part of the penal transportation system.

The journey from England to Australia was long and difficult, and typically took several months to complete. Convicts were crowded into the ship’s hold, often in cramped and unsanitary conditions. The voyage was marked by disease, harsh discipline, and high mortality rates, as many convicts did not survive the journey.

Once they arrived in Australia, convicts were assigned to work for the government or for private individuals, and were used as a source of cheap labor for the new colonies. Despite the harsh conditions of their transportation and the arduous work they were assigned to do, many convicts went on to make new lives for themselves in Australia, and their descendants have made significant contributions to the development of the country.

The transportation of convicts to Australia continued until the mid-1850s, when the last shipment of convicts arrived in Western Australia. By this time, the Australian colonies had become more self-sufficient and no longer relied on convicts as a source of labor.

Overall, sailing from the UK to Australia is a journey of a lifetime, and with the right planning and preparation, it can be a safe and enjoyable experience. Whether you are an experienced sailor or a first-time voyager, the rewards of this journey are well worth the effort and planning.

Ship from US and UK to Australia: Shipping Tips and Cheapest Ways

Ship from US and UK to Australia: Shipping Tips and Cheapest Ways

Australia is one of the fastest-growing eCommerce markets with a CAGR of over 13% between 2022 to 2025 and is expected to surpass $66 billion in revenue by 2025.

Furthermore, by 2025, more than 77% of Australians are predicted to be engaging in online shopping.

So if you’re operating an eCommerce business in the US or UK, Australia can be a great potential market to expand your operations.

However, shipping to Australia is not that straightforward considering it’s located exactly on the opposite end of the world — from US and UK. So before you make a move, you need to understand the nitty-gritty of shipping to Australia.

So, to help you get started, we’ve outlined important shipping tips and the cheapest ways to ship from US and UK to Australia.

Let’s dive in.

Tips for Shipping to Australia from US and UK

1-35

Shipping internationally requires additional planning and groundwork in each and every aspect. Below we have outlined the aspects that you must consider when you:

  • Ship from US to Australia
  • Ship from UK to Australia

Let’s take a look.

International shipments are more vulnerable to mishandling and damage due to multiple reasons. These reasons include:

  • Shocks and vibrations during air or ocean transport
  • Stacking or palletising
  • Loading and unloading packages multiple times when transport vehicle changes

So you need to prepare your packages in a way that can withstand rough handling.

Here’s what you can do:

  • Use double-walled corrugated boxes or reinforced parcel boxes for heavy items
  • Apply fragile labels for items that need to be handled with care
  • Use crates or pallets for large goods for better structural strength
  • Use shrink wraps or security straps for boxes and pallets
  • Use internal packagings such as lightweight foam boards or bubble wraps to fill the empty space
  • Secure fragile items with cushioning
  • If you’re reusing old boxes, ensure structural integrity and remove old shipping labels
  • When packaging multiple items in a box or crate, keep the heavy packages at the bottom
  • Use wide, pressure-sensitive plastic or water-activated reinforced tapes for sealing boxes. Avoid using a duct tape or masking tape.
  • Place an extra shipping label with the shipper and recipient’s address and contact details before you seal the package

Documentation

When it comes to international shipping, customs clearance can take time. And if your documentation is incomplete, it would further delay the process and so the deliveries.

So if you want a smooth customs clearance, keep your paperwork impeccable.

You’d need the following documents:

  • Commercial invoice: A commercial invoice includes shipment details like the reason for export, shipping date, invoice number, description and quantity of goods, weight, declared value, etc.
  • Air waybill: Air waybill (AWB) — also known as waybill or dispatch note — is an agreement between the carrier and shipper. Each air waybill has a unique number. It’s called the AWB number and it’s used for tracking the shipment (this will be provided by your chosen shipper upon booking).
  • Detailed goods description: This document includes the following details:
  • What is the product or goods?
  • What is it made of?
  • What is it used for?

It should be a very specific and clear description of the items.

  • Packing list: Not all countries require this document. But you can include it in your documents just to be extra prepared. It mentions details like the weight and quantity of the goods.
  • Certificate of Origin (COO): COO is issued by the government authority of the country of origin. It mentions the details of where the goods are produced, manufactured, or processed.
  • Export licence: Exporters may need an export license to ship specific goods in volumes. It’s a legal document that is issued by the government of the exporting country.

Import Restrictions in Australia

Australian Border Force (ABF) has listed all the goods that are prohibited to be imported into Australia. They’ve defined the categories as mentioned below and each category has a list of prohibited items.

Categories of prohibited goods:

  • Animals and plants
  • Consumer products (credit cards, cosmetic - toxic materials, and more)
  • Defence and strategic goods
  • Drugs, medicines and therapeutic substances
  • Hazardous goods
  • Intellectual property and cultural items
  • Miscellaneous

1-36

However, some of the items in the above categories might be allowed for specific agencies with special permits.

So check the list of prohibited items for your product category before you ship them. As it may happen that your shipment might clear the export customs from US and UK but gets stuck with ABF customs in Australia.

Besides, here’s the list of goods that can’t be sent through our automated online self-service. If you’re sending any of the items in this list, you can’t book it online, however please contact us as in many instances we can still help you book it through our personalised services.

Shipping Time

Australia — being a remote continent, requires you to be patient when it comes to shipping from US and UK.

US: It can take up to 7-10 working days when you ship your consignment through standard air cargo services. Whereas with the priority services, you can transport the packages in 2-3 days.

On the other hand, ocean freight can take anywhere from 35 to 65 days realistically.

UK: UK — as compared to the US — is closer to Australia. So it may take around 2-8 working days by air cargo. And sea freight would take approximately 40-45 days.

Export Customs

According to the International Trade Administration (ITA) of the US, 95% of the items exported from the US wouldn’t require eCommerce retailers to obtain an export licence.

Similarly, most items don’t require an export licence when you ship internationally from the UK.

However, you have to submit a customs declaration form when you ship from US and UK. This form needs to be submitted and approved by the customs authorities before your shipments are allowed to leave the country.

Usually, major shipping carriers like UPS, FedEx, and DHL would take care of this formality using the information from your documents. Besides, if you’ve outsourced your order fulfilment to a third-party logistics (3PL) provider, they’d also help you clear customs for origin and destination countries.

Shipping Methods

Since Australia is a remote destination and doesn’t share land borders with other nations, sea shipping and air freight are the only suitable shipping methods.

Here are the shipping options that you can consider while shipping from US and UK to Australia using both options.

Sea Shipping

If your consignment is not urgent and you’re shipping in bulk, sea freight might be an ideal method to ship to Australia from US and UK. Here are some of the ways you can transport your goods by the ocean:

  • Full Container Load (FCL): FCL shipping means that you rent one or more containers exclusively for your goods. If you’re a high-volume shipper, FCL shipping can be quite cost-effective for your business.
  • Less-than Container Load (LCL): If you don’t have enough shipment volume to fill an entire container, you can opt for LCL shipping. Here, multiple shippers share the same container to load their goods.
  • Roll On Roll Off (RORO): Some carriers also allow you to board your transport vehicles (trucks or trailers) loaded with goods straight onto a ship. Thus, when the ship reaches the destination port and customs clearance is obtained, your vehicle drives off the ship.

Air Transport

Here are the reasons you should consider air freight :

  • You want to ship goods on an urgent basis
  • You’re shipping perishable goods
  • Your shipping volume isn’t high enough to qualify for sea freight options like LCL or FCL
  • You’re shipping high-value goods.

Shipping Costs

Shipping costs are usually determined by factors like:

  • Shipping distance: The farther the destination, the more you’ll pay for shipping — be it air transport or sea freight. So you’ll have to pay more shipping costs when you ship from US as compared to shipping from UK.
  • Dimensions: Carriers sell you the space in their transport vehicles. So the larger your package size, the more you’ll pay for shipping. Moreover, if you’re shipping oversized, odd-sized, or non-stackable packages, you may need to pay extra shipping charges.
  • Package weight: Most carriers take the package’s deadweight and volumetric weight into account while calculating shipping costs. And whichever of the two is higher, you’d be charged for that weight.
  • Delivery speed: This specifically applies to air freight. For instance, if you’ve chosen a priority service to get your shipment delivered in 2-3 business days, the carrier would charge more. On the other hand, you’d pay less if you’ve opted for standard delivery.

Import Customs in Australia

All the goods imported to Australia are subject to duties and taxes unless you’ve obtained an exemption or concession as a special case.

Here’s some key information to keep in mind:

  • The declared value of imported goods should be converted to Australian currency in the customs declaration form.
  • You need to pay a 5% import duty on the declared value of goods.
  • You need to pay 10% GST on the sum of Declared value + Freight cost + Import duty. Here’s the import duty and GST calculator for easy calculation.

Once you pay the customs duty and taxes, your shipment will be released.

Furthermore, also study the importing costs guidelines of the Australian Border Force to check if you need to pay additional taxes. For example, if you’re shipping luxury cars or wine, there are additional duties and taxes.

Common Mistakes to Avoid while Shipping from US and UK to Australia

Now let’s go through the common international shipping mistakes that you need to avoid while shipping from US and UK.

  • Knowingly or unknowingly shipping prohibited goods
  • Miscalculating customs and duties especially while converting into AUD.
  • Incomplete documentation
  • Not having extra copies of the documents
  • Delays in providing the required documents to the carrier when needed
  • Not buying a shipping protection plan
  • Incomplete or erroneous shipping addresses on packages and documents

Avoid the above mistakes for a seamless international shipping process.

5 incredible places in Western Australia for people who think it’s too far for a holiday

Western Australia's capital, Perth, holds the title of being the largest isolated city globally, making it a unique destination for travellers seeking something off the beaten path. Photo / Tourism Western Australia

The 7.5 hour flight from Auckland to Perth , covering 5000km and more than one in-flight movie, could feel off-putting for the average holidaymaker. But there’s so much to do in Western Australia, it’s well worth the journey, writes Julia D’Orazio.

There’s no use sugar-coating it; Western Australia is a slog to get to. Its capital, Perth, is the largest isolated city in the world. But as a homegrown Perthite, I promise it’s worth the almost eight-hour sleep direct from Auckland to arrive on golden shores. Or are they fiery red? Or snow-white? Answer: all the above.

Instead of researching for the long-haul, I’ll make it easier by revealing Western Australia’s most incredible places to stretch your legs and back.

Underwater adventures of a lifetime in Ningaloo

I’m going to start the list with a personal favourite: Exmouth . The far-flung coastal town, 1253km north of Perth, is wedged between yin-yang scenery: Cape Range National Park, a mix of ancient limestone ranges, gorges, canyons, arid plains, and white coastal sands; and Ningaloo Reef , the world’s largest fringing reef system.

Ningaloo Reef warrants high levels of exertion. Here, marine life thrives below turquoise waters, with the flourishing underwater playground home to more than 500 fish and 200 coral species just metres offshore. Multiple tour operators offer the swim of a lifetime alongside the Ocean’s Big 3: whale sharks, humpback whales, and manta rays —the latter two returning residents, migrating off the coast from autumn to spring.

Other off-kilter activities include diving the passport-required Exmouth Navy Pier with Dive Ningaloo. Much revered by avid divers, it is the world’s only operational naval base that permits commercial access to the colourful chaos of marine life below it. I can attest that the hour-long flipper-thon is an overstimulating swim with sightings of grey nurse sharks, sea turtles, potato grouper, and large schools of trevally, to name a few jetty dwellers.

Out of the water, have a real red-dirt experience at Bullara Station, a reimagined Outback stay. The working cattle station offers campsites, a shearer’s lodge, bell tents, and secluded deluxe safari huts under towering gum trees. Despite its remoteness, there are many places to socialise: legendary burger nights, campfire gatherings, and table dinners in the revamped Woolshed, where guests are encouraged to mingle. And for the novelty factor, cool off at the station’s Insta-famous open-air Lava tree showers with watering cans as showerheads. Pretty cool.

Sip and dip on repeat

Visiting the state’s premier wine region , Margaret River, has never been more accessible thanks to new direct Jetstar services from Melbourne and Sydney to regional hub Busselton. But once you arrive in “Busso”, where to begin? Start with a walk along the longest jetty in the Southern Hemisphere, Busselton Jetty, snaking 1.8km over the Indian Ocean. Beneath it, dive or snorkel in the new underwater sculpture park crafted by local artists. And when needing to recharge, seek Shelter. The ever-popular foreshore brewery offers bistro pub food and craft beers under one big shed opposite the jetty.

Moving on from city life is little sister Dunsborough, a 25-minute drive south. It, too, is experiencing a boom with the opening of a new eat, play and stay village, Southcamp. Moments away are the region’s most famous coastlines, Bunker Bay and Meelup, both with sparkling blue waters. The latter is a top spot for a sundowner barbecue with kangaroos out and about around dinner time.

To immerse yourself in wine country, stay at Edge Luxury Villas . Four new self-contained villas dubbed “Maldives in Margs” jut out over a small lake, surrounded by forest. On its doorstep is winery Swings Roundabouts, ever popular with its swing seating overlooking rolling vineyards, and Beerfarm, a rustic brewhouse with American-inspired barbecue eats and hillside slip-and-slide rides. To be a kid again…

Want to go all out? Visit the new haute cuisine restaurant de’sendent in Margaret River town for a locally-sourced degustation by regional culinary hero Evan Hayter.

The Outback amusement park

El Questro Wilderness Park is tucked away in one of the world’s last wilderness frontiers. Located 110km west of Kununurra , Australia’s Eden entices with ancient landscapes – stunning burnt-orange gorges, waterfalls, natural pools, thermal springs, rivers, bottle-shaped boab trees – and wildlife spread across 283,000ha.

Access to the biologically blessed wonderland requires a short stint along the legendary Gibb River Road. Thankfully, a hairy drive is not needed along a sealed section of the 660km, mostly 4WD road that splits the park in two. On one side of the Gibb are safari-style tent cabins neighbouring the state’s dreamiest natural pool, Emma Gorge. It takes roughly an hour to hike to the Kimberley’s poster child: a magnificent scene of a trickling waterfall plunging 65m into an amphitheatre-shaped waterfall with climbing ferns on gorge walls.

On the other side is The Station. El Questro’s riverside hub is basecamp for all happenings – a Texan-ranch-inspired pub, heli rides, guided tours, campgrounds, cabins, and upmarket bush dining. Many of the park’s hiking trails and attractions are a short drive away, including the thermal pleasure garden, Zebedee Springs. It looks and feels paradisal with soaring pandanus palm forests shading the tiny, tiered pools and waterfalls lodged in a valley basin.

For peak sunset viewing, head to Saddleback Ridge. The challenging 4WD track is not for the faint-hearted, with guided tours available to bypass the sweat-inducing ride along steep, narrow roads. Once at the lookout, soak up all-encompassing views of the Pentecost Valley, Earth’s bumps, undulating woodlands, and ridgelines millions of years in the making.

Hunt for mud crabs and fossilised footprints

East Kimberley’s Dampier Peninsula sticks out like the country’s left thumb, a two-hour drive northeast of Broome. The sliver is home to flaming red coastal cliffs, azure waters, white sandy beaches , salt plains and mangrove forests, to name a few dazzlers. Yet, a majority of these remarkable scenes require assistance from those in the know.

The region is home to many indigenous -led tours. Go on a topsy-turvy tagalong 4WD adventure to far-flung Hunters Creek for a freshly caught seafood barbeque with Bardi guide Brian Lee. Or tag along with Bardi guide Bundy Chaquebor. Journey through the coastal community of Lombadina to uncover ancient footprints and test your aim at spearfishing.

Learn about life in the bush on a walkabout with Bardi-Jawi guide Bolo Angus. Trek both arid salt and tangled mangroves hunting for bush foods, including spearing for mud crabs the size of dinner plates.

Set off for an island adventure with Bardi-Jawi guide and human high beam Rosanna Angus. Pass powerful tidal movements en route to former missionary island, Sunday Island. Depending on tidal movements, you may see a waterfall reef and massive whirlpools. The journey also passes untouched islands and shorelines begging for a towel.

But perhaps most captivating is Angus’ enthused storytelling. It’s easy to hang on to her every word as she beautifully recaptures her ancestors’ life with an infectious smile. She leaves a lasting impression—and so does the dream state.

Board a luxury, small-ship cruise and explore the remote Kimberley region

The Kimberley region encompasses a staggering 421,451sq km and its coastline grants one of the most adventurous, less-travelled insights into Australian history and nature. Large cruise ships can’t access many of the treasures that pepper this formidable landscape, but a Silversea expedition ship is both small and ultra-luxurious. Traversing into Western Australian’s most remote reaches, no two days are the same. The ever-changing landscape ranges from sparkling waterfalls (and some, due to forces of nature appear to run horizontally) to gorges and canyons, forests and rock formations. You’ll venture into a collection of remote islands that most Australians haven’t even heard of: Abrolhos, Dirk Hartog, Montebello, Lacepedes and the Buccaneer Archipelago and use Silversea Zodiacs to explore some of the oldest rock art in the world, as well as nooks that have been left untouched for centuries. From Kimberley’s astonishing sunrises and sunsets to humpback whales and the odd saltwater croc, Silversea’s itineraries are for the born explorers among us.
