At six years old, while most of his peers were piecing together rudimentary houses and towers, Will Davis held his first Lego set and dreamed of bigger and better things. Always unsatisfied with the first attempt, he would tweak and tinker, knock down and rebuild until, after many brow-furrowing hours, his impossible ideal was reached.

Now, three decades and one attic’s worth of Legos later, that exacting mind and eye remain. Even if the pieces have changed.

“While I’ve always loved math and science and engineering, I realized in high school, and later in college, that I’m at my best when I’m working with people,” says Davis. “I spent years figuring out what makes things work. Now I’m focused on what makes people work—what makes them tick.”

As deputy director of the office of equal opportunity and diversity at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, Davis is helping the agency strengthen its commitment to cultural inclusion. So far, the shuttle seems poised for a steady flight.

Training days

Having cut his teeth as a NASA engineer from 2005 to 2017, overseeing safety and quality control for projects including the International Space Station and the Orion Program, Davis says being able to understand the engineer’s perspective—“to speak their language”—is critical to his goals.

“Our workforce here is 80 percent science, technology, engineering and math [STEM],” Davis says. “Because I spent so much time in that world, I came in with a pretty good idea of what changes would be embraced and how to communicate in lingo they’d understand.”

To get there, he needed to start where every self-respecting scientist does: by gathering information. Specifically, Davis used raw, aggregated data collected through NASA’s internal human resources platform to better understand which demographics were being underrepresented—and to what degree.

For example, Davis found that some underserved populations weren’t being selected for supervisory roles at a rate equal to their participation in the general workforce. A self-described “infographic junkie,” Davis has developed a knack for reducing NASA’s personnel data into graphs and charts that are clear, engaging and—most important of all—easy to understand.

Only, rather than using data to make specific recommendations, Davis instead wants it to spark the right kinds of questions, such as how best to eliminate discriminatory practices.

“The data shows what it shows. The question becomes, ‘Are we okay with this?’” Davis explains. “If we’re not, at least we have the data to inform the resulting policy or program.”

Pieces in place

At Houston’s Johnson Space Center (JSC), these efforts were instrumental in the creation of the Inclusion and Innovation task force. To achieve their goals in the realm of human space flight—to the moon, Mars and beyond—Davis and his colleagues know they need to be equally innovative in how they develop their internal resources. To that end, Davis has helped spearhead process improvements to encourage more integrated staff activities using what he calls a “community of practice approach.” Moreover, he’s worked to ensure that each of JSC’s nine employee-resource groups are inclusive of NASA’s minority populations, including those in another group with which Davis proudly identifies: the LGBTQ community.

“There is mounting data that organizations that are inclusive and authentic are more successful in putting forward solutions to higher-end projects and problems, the kind that NASA deals with,” Davis explains. “When you involve people from all walks of life, minor conflict is inevitable. But that can actually be a good thing. Performance is further enhanced by allowing each individual to bring their full, authentic self to the workplace.”

Indeed, Davis’ journey has been a launch-tower-sized testament to that very idea.

Lifetime membership

In 2000, while studying metallurgical and materials engineering at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), his love of Legos given way to grander designs, Davis joined two Hispanic student clubs: MAES–

Latinos in Science and Engineering—and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), serving as a student officer in both.

Sharing a joint UTEP chapter, the two organizations gave Davis something he’d never had: a community of likeminded peers to call his own.

“It was through my involvement in SHPE and MAES that I really started to appreciate my own potential in working with people,” recalls Davis, who serve as MAES board member for 16 years and its national president from 2012-2018. “I’ve had lifetime memberships ever since.”

Indeed, while Davis has been more involved with MAES, having chaired each of its annual conferences for several years and garnered numerous lifetime achievement awards, he believes the common values—a commitment to student achievement, community leadership development and corporate responsibility—make them ripe for an eventual merger, and SHPE’s CEO Raquel Tamez has noted this possibility during recent keynote addresses.

More broadly, Davis envisions each playing an important role in helping the next generation of Hispanic engineers find a steadier, more sustained industry footing. To achieve this, Davis says, will require a threefold focus: encouraging existing Hispanic engineers to become role models and mentors; giving young students greater access to STEM curricula; and addressing the skyrocketing cost of college education—particularly for Hispanic students.

“Until we solve that financial axis question, we’re going to get better and better at getting aspiring Hispanic engineers through the college doors, but the drop-out rates will continue to be an issue,” Davis explains. “There’s no one silver bullet, but organizations like SHPE and MAES can play a role in making these issues a bigger part of the national conversation.”

All with the aim of building something better—and stronger—than what came before.

There, astronauts Roger Chaffee, Gus Grissom, and Ed White entered the command module and began a “plugs out” test (that is, with the spacecraft detached from all umbilicals and external power sources) of the launch vehicle and spacecraft designed to carry them on their mission.

At 6:31 p.m., a spark ignited in the lower equipment bay of the spacecraft. The atmosphere inside was 100 percent oxygen. The astronauts didn’t have a chance.

The evening before the fire that claimed the lives of these three men, loyal viewers had tuned in for “Tomorrow Is Yesterday,” the 19th episode of a four-month-old TV show called Star Trek .

Set in the 23rd century, the groundbreaking series had attracted a loyal following of viewers who relished its serious approach to the genre of science fiction. Among the subset of fans who most valued this element of the show were some of the key people working in America’s space program, who saw the Starship Enterprise and its crew of high-minded explorers as the future embodiment of what they hoped to achieve. When the Apollo 1 tragedy occurred, people had been flying into space for less than seven years. Spaceflight was new and dangerous, and here was a show that made it feel routine. Star Trek offered hope to a nation and a space program in a moment when both had reason to doubt they would ever reach the moon, never mind the “new life and new civilizations” promised in the show’s opening-credits monologue. By 1967 NASA needed Star Trek —and, as it later turned out, Star Trek needed NASA.

Alberta Moran was the assistant to John F. Clark, then director of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. She was also one of the founders of the National Space Club. Composed of industry and government representatives along with educational institutions and the press, the National Space Club seeks to promote leadership in the burgeoning new field of astronautics. One way they did that was to sponsor the Goddard Memorial Dinner. Held in Washington, D.C., the annual dinner is named after American space pioneer Robert H. Goddard and recognizes persons and institutions that have made outstanding contributions to space science and technology during the previous year.

“We were at my house getting the invitation list together for the [1967] Goddard Dinner,” recalls Moran. “Penny, my oldest daughter came in and said, ‘Why don’t we invite somebody from Star Trek ?’ ”

On March 14, the day before the Goddard Dinner, Leonard Nimoy—who played the unflappable half-human, half-Vulcan science officer, Mr. Spock, who had quickly become the series’ most popular character—landed at Dulles International Airport about 30 miles west of Washington. When she went to pick up Nimoy, Moran brought Penny along with two of her daughters’ friends. The three rabid Star Trek fans got to share a car with one of the program’s newly minted stars for the roughly hour-long drive downtown.

The next morning, Nimoy’s wife Sandy joined him for a tour of the Goddard Space Flight Center. The visitors were shocked by how much of Goddard’s workforce had turned out to greet them. In a 1967 letter to Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, Nimoy wrote: “This was the first real taste that I had of the NASA attitude towards Star Trek. ”

The dinner was that evening. All the top managers from NASA and its contractors were at the black tie affair. Barely six weeks after the Apollo 1 fire, the mood among everyone that evening was tempered by the realization that the moon landing would be delayed. Some even speculated that the Apollo program might be canceled altogether.

After the reception, the Nimoys found themselves seated at a table with space luminaries. In addition to astronaut John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth, those seated at the dais included NASA Administrator James Webb, Robert Goddard’s widow, and the evening’s speaker: Vice President Hubert Humphrey.

After Humphrey’s speech, other guests waited patiently to share a moment with Nimoy. “They were all most cordial,” the actor wrote in the letter to Roddenberry. “All of them wanted autographs and pictures for themselves and their children.”

That evening, people looked beyond what had happened with the Apollo fire. While Nimoy shook hands and signed autographs, those attending the dinner saw not just the actor, but Mr. Spock, a representative from the future who knew that what they were doing in their century might have been painful but was necessary for them to move forward in exploring the final frontier of space. Nimoy wrote to Roddenberry: “I do not overstate the fact when I tell you that the interest in the show is so intense, that it would almost seem they feel we are a dramatization of the future of their space program, and they have completely taken us to heart…they are, in fact, proud of the show as though in some way it represents them.”

That wasn’t such a far-fetched notion. A couple of years earlier, when Roddenberry had been seeking meetings with esteemed members of the aerospace community to discuss ideas for his wild-sounding TV show, it had helped immensely that Roddenberry could talk shop. He’d flown B-17s during World War II, and had then spent about three years as a pilot for Pan American World Airways.

An example of how the aerospace industry directly influenced Star Trek appears in the classic Season Two episode “The Trouble With Tribbles,” first aired on December 29, 1967. In this episode, “Space Station K-7” is overrun by cute, furry animals who eat and breed uncontrollably. The principal elements of the space station as it appears in the episode were first depicted in a 1959 report by Douglas Aircraft that outlined the operational requirements of an extendable orbiting space station. Space Station K-7 was practically a Douglas design.

Other aerospace companies also contributed ideas. Representatives from General Electric’s aerospace division and Caltech’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory toured the Star Trek sets and answered questions from cast members. These meetings were invaluable, but Roddenberry wanted Star Trek to have the imprimatur of NASA itself.

In a 1966 memo, Roddenberry wrote that a public information specialist at NASA’s Western Operations Office in Santa Monica “was very interested in Star Trek and most anxious to provide us with all sorts of help including stock footage, valuable models, animation, technical advice, even access to some NASA labs and proving grounds.”

The Air Force’s elite Aerospace Research Pilot School invited Roddenberry and the show’s cast to visit their facilities and attend graduation exercises at Edwards Air Force Base. Roddenberry showed up. In October 1968, actor DeForest Kelley, who played cantankerous Enterprise Chief Medical Officer Leonard “Bones” McCoy, was drafted to comfort the astronauts of Apollo 7, the first crewed Apollo mission. When Wally Schirra, Donn Eisele, and Walt Cunningham developed colds during their 10 days in space, Kelley sent the crew a telegram reading: “I do not make house calls but under the circumstances, I am pleased to beam aboard and take care of the common cold. (Signed) Bones.”

There was even an effort to try to get astronaut Alan Shepard to appear on the show. Shepard, the first American to travel into space during his historic May 5, 1961 suborbital flight and the fifth man to walk on the moon, was asked to play a minor role in the series. Sadly, the deal never materialized.

In a March 1968 letter to James Webb, NASA’s administrator, Roddenberry expressed his appreciation for NASA’s support. “I have never received friendly and efficient cooperation anywhere near that provided by your Agency,” he wrote.

Historic Enough for the Smithsonian

At the Goddard dinner in March 1967, while Nimoy posed for pictures and signed autographs, another individual stood nearby. Richard Preston, an administrative officer with the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum, was waiting his turn to deliver an important message to Nimoy: The Smithsonian wanted a copy of the show’s pilot episode. Or rather, its second pilot episode.

Roddenberry had famously tried to sell his series to NBC executives with a 1964 pilot called “The Cage.” William Shatner wasn’t in it, and Nimoy laughs and grins as Mr. Spock—a very different imagining of the wry but sober character who in his mature incarnation would become so beloved.

NBC suits found the whole thing slow, talky, and “too cerebral.” But they took the unprecedented step of commissioning a second pilot. “Where No Man Has Gone Before” added Shatner to the cast as Enterprise Captain James T. Kirk, among other major changes. It was this revised Star Trek that NBC and later, the Smithsonian, approved.

No other show in the history of television had ever had its pilot requested by the Smithsonian. But Preston was just the messenger. The request had come from Frederick C. Durant III, a naval aviator, test pilot, and rocket engineer who in 1965 had become assistant director of astronautics for the National Air and Space Museum.

Durant’s credentials for the post were impeccable. Poor health prevented him from being deployed overseas during World War II, but he served with honor on the homefront, as a flight instructor teaching new cadets how to make carrier landings in the Great Lakes. After the war, he became an ardent promoter of spaceflight, holding posts as a consultant and engineer in various research labs and the Department of Defense. In 1953 he’d been elected president of the American Rocketry Society, one of several positions he held through which he befriended scientist and author Arthur C. Clarke and German rocket pioneer Wernher von Braun, among other luminaries.

An avid science fiction fan, Durant watched Star Trek with interest and soon struck up a correspondence with Roddenberry. Preston, an aide to Durant at the time, wrote to Roddenberry in 1967: “We believe the Star Trek pilot would be a valuable addition to the archives of the National Air and Space Museum. Science Fiction forms a definite segment of astronautics chronology.” On August 28, 1967, Roddenberry formally presented a 16mm color print copy of “Where No Man Has Gone Before” to S. Paul Johnston, director of the National Air and Space Museum.

Fan, Short for Fanatic

Just a few days before the Goddard Dinner, Roddenberry received word from NBC that Star Trek would be renewed for a second season. Paul L. Klein, vice president of audience measurement for NBC, wrote in the May 27, 1967 issue of TV Guide: “Star Trek is the only science-fiction show on television with a scientific basis. I was instrumental in recommending Star Trek for the NBC schedule and have been one of the show’s staunchest supporters during the agony of renewal time. Messrs. Roddenberry, Coon and the whole Star Trek staff have deserved the public’s approval, NBC’s faith in them, and, as topping to the cake, were just recently honored by the National Space Club in Washington for their scientific validity.”

When Star Trek debuted, NBC gave it the coveted time slot of 8:30 p.m. on Thursday. During the second season, the show was moved to Fridays, a less desirable slot particularly for a show beloved by high school and college students.

“We were making out fine where we were,” said Roddenberry in an August 13, 1967 interview, “but now we may lose many of the young people who’ve been watching, because Friday is the night they like to go out.”

Still, fans would not let the show die. By late 1967, when it looked like the series would not be able to secure a third season, a massive letter writing campaign helped generate a lot of attention.

“ Star Trek is the ‘in’ show with the people who work at NASA, Caltech, and the space plants,” said Roddenberry during an interview that year. Boasting that NBC received some 4,500 pro- Trek letters per week, Roddenberry went on to say that, “we get letters from curators of museums and college presidents, all of whom appreciate our serious attempt to portray what space travel will be like.”

On March 1, 1968 at 9:28 p.m. following the first-run airing of the Star Trek episode “The Omega Glory,” an NBC announcer assured viewers that the series would continue to be seen on television that fall. To announce a renewal on the air like this was unusual, but then, so was the kind of attention Star Trek engendered.

Seven days after NBC announced the third-season renewal, Roddenberry sent the following telegram to Durant at the Smithsonian:

THE HONOR THE SMITHSONIAN BESTOWED ON US HELPED GREATLY IN THE RENEWAL OF STAR TREK FOR ANOTHER SEASON. THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP. WE’LL DO OUR BEST TO MAINTAIN QUALITY SHOWS. OUR MOST SINCERE THANKS. WARMEST PERSONAL REGARDS

It was not a complete triumph. For its third season, Star Trek would have its budget slashed, resulting in notably diminished production value. And it would remain on Friday nights, now in an even less favorable time slot: 10 p.m. Roddenberry knew that the third season would be the last—at least for a while.

In recalling the initial lifespan of his brainchild, Roddenberry said: “[The U.S. was] just getting into space. When we made our first episode, we hadn’t even been to the moon. Then Star Trek came along and said, ‘Hey, we made it!’ It’s a program that said there is basic intelligence and goodness and decency in the human animal that will triumph over these things.”

While fans almost unanimously agree that Star Trek ’s third season saw a regrettable decline in quality, those final 24 episodes are what made the series’ run long enough for the show to live on in syndication, to be discovered by new generations of fans. It was only in syndication throughout the following decade that the show’s lasting commercial and cultural impact would become apparent. The release of Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979, a decade after the original series’ cancellation, would kick-start a steady stream of Trek feature films and new TV and streaming series that has continued to this day.

Fans Grow Up To Be Astronauts

In the fall of 1974, the Smithsonian opened a new exhibit. “Life in the Universe” premiered in the old Arts & Industries Building before taking up permanent residence in the new National Air and Space Museum that opened on the National Mall two years later. Featured in the exhibit was the original 11-foot production model of the USS Enterprise used in the filming of the television series.

As Durant explained: “Our interest in acquiring Star Trek memorabilia relates to the study of the influence of science fiction upon future technological development. We believe that consideration of science fiction is relevant to current and future accomplishments in space.”

The approval of NASA, the aerospace community, and finally, the Smithsonian Institution lent Star Trek an unlikely cachet that has helped the franchise to—to borrow a phrase—live long and prosper. After other, higher-rated television shows of the same era were forgotten, Star Trek found new life. “We were kind of the NASA connection; the NASA fantasy and the show that NASA watched,” Nimoy recalled in The Star Trek Interview Book .

Credible and inspirational both, Star Trek became a favorite among subsequent generations of astronomers and spacefarers. In 2015, Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti, who hadn’t even been born when Star Trek was canceled in 1969, tweeted a photo of herself wearing a Star Trek uniform in the cupola of the International Space Station. James B. Garvin, who became chief scientist at NASA Goddard decades after Nimoy’s 1967 visit and remains one of the top minds behind the agency’s Mars Exploration Program, grew up on Trek and made a point of watching the entire Star Trek: Voyager series one summer with his kids.

When the National Air and Space Museum celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2016, the newly restored Enterprise studio model—which for years had been kept on display in the basement level of the Museum’s gift shop—was moved to a more prominent location, in the Museum’s Milestones of Flight Hall near its Independence Avenue entrance. The “five-year mission” of inspiration it set out upon in 1966 remains, as of 2021, ongoing.

'Star Trek' advisor warps into NASA to talk real science of sci-fi

Erin Macdonald spoke about the relationship between 'Star Trek' and modern space exploration.

As "Star Trek's" main science advisor since 2019, astrophysicist Erin Macdonald knows a thing or two about the final frontier.

She also knows how important it is for the famed sci-fi franchise to have a strong storytelling foothold in the actual laws of physics and cosmology.

Macdonald gave a talk last month at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, titled " From Warp Drives to Tachyons: Physics in Star Trek ." The lecture addressed the symbiotic relationship between " Star Trek " and real-life space exploration and scientific discovery.

"There is so much renown and history at NASA Goddard, it was a wonderful opportunity to speak at this venue and to the folks who work there," said Macdonald. "I love being able to share science fiction with a more science-oriented audience and help them see how a scientist approaches narrative storytelling.

"The way I kind of advertise my science advising is that I do a 'yes, and' approach," she added. "It's important to find ways to integrate actual science when it's appropriate and being able to bend the rules and say, 'Let's just not explain it,' when we can. The main rule for me is to make sure nothing is said in the show that is explicitly wrong."

"'Star Trek' and NASA have had a strong connection for many years, with the former being inspired to write stories of the future by current-day NASA activities, and the latter inspired to do great things now by the stories we've all viewed," Carpenter noted. "Both have benefited greatly from this continuous interaction. Dr. Macdonald was the obvious choice to join the series of 'Trek' luminaries who have visited Goddard over the years and explored this connection."

Prior to Macdonald's presentation, Carpenter led her on a tour of the Goddard Space Flight Center, specifically the Hubble Space Telescope's central command room and the massive Integration and Test Complex where the $3.5 billion Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is being assembled for a slated 2027 launch.

"It was thrilling to see the Nancy Grace Roman Telescope in its early stages of development," Macdonald said. "Additionally, I was honored to have my parents with me so they could see the work being done. They worked very hard to make sure we learned all about Hubble through the '90s as images were released, so to see its continuing work and the future generations of these telescopes, and to share that with them, was very special."

Macdonald expressed her thoughts regarding the importance of the ongoing interplay between NASA and "Star Trek" that has included naming the first space shuttle after the series' U.S.S. Enterprise starship, and actor Nichelle Nichols (Lt. Nyota Uhura) encouraging NASA brass to recruit astronauts of color in the 1970s.

"I'm honored to play a small role in continuing that relationship and hope to do so for many years in the future!" Macdonald said. "Where I have had a great experience is my continued relationship with peers who work at NASA and other organizations, who reach out to tell me about a new, interesting discovery, or even more, a new 'unknown' that has been uncovered. Here we can find ways to integrate those into the stories going forward."

To Boldly Go: How ‘Star Trek’ Inspired NASA’s Planet Hunters

The 1960s "Star Trek" series, canceled after only three seasons for want of stronger ratings, roared back from oblivion to become one of the world’s most successful film and television franchises. As its 50 th anniversary approaches, the show remains a palpable presence within NASA.

Some scientists and engineers are partial to the original series, with its 1960s hairdos, quick-drawing Captain Kirk and soaring musical score. Others prefer the “Next Generation” and its Shakespearean Captain Picard, or fondly recall other "Star Trek" spinoffs such as “Deep Space Nine,” “Voyager” and “Enterprise.”

All of them say various "Star Trek" manifestations, on television or the big screen, made a lasting impression, helping fire their passion for space exploration.

Growing up without a TV at home, I didn’t see "Star Trek" til I went away to college at MIT. At my coed fraternity there, we would go to the dining room, put our dinners on plates, and take them to the TV room. A whole gang of us would watch “Star Trek: the Next Generation” together every day. I took to it like a duck to water. Obviously, my captain is Captain Picard, although my favorite series is probably “Deep Space Nine.” For me, it wasn’t only a vision of the diversity of worlds and life that might be out there that drew me in. It was also "Star Trek’s" vision of how humanity itself is changed by the exploration of space and then by meeting others who are genuinely, fundamentally different from ourselves. The "Star Trek" vision is a very optimistic, sunny vision of humanity at peace with itself, and with a greater appreciation for—and a greater value placed on—personal development and satisfaction in your work.

In the 60s, for the "Star Trek" first run, I was little—five years old. I know I saw it back then because it is in my kindergarten coloring books. One episode, with the planet-killer machine, must have made a big, scary impression on me, because I made drawings of it blasting things. "Star Trek" presents a widely accessible vision of what might be out there in the broader universe. People's interest in the show can be a launching point to discover the real science of astronomy and the real engineering of space travel. A lot of people in aerospace or science are fans of the show, not because we want to act out episodes, but because we'd love to travel/explore/learn about our universe. We’d like to do this not just for ourselves but for the whole world, for all people who are curious about what's out there and how humanity fits in.

I started watching the "Star Trek" original series when it was on in reruns, when I was a youngster. I was a very avid "Star Trek" fan. I’d already been a very serious space buff; I knew in the fourth grade that I wanted to get a Ph.D. in physics. I only ever wanted to work for NASA. I started writing to JPL when I was nine years old. Two of the missions I worked on at JPL were Deep Space 1 and Dawn, which I’m working on now. Those are NASA’s only two planetary missions to use ion propulsion. The first time I ever heard of ion propulsion was in a "Star Trek" episode called “Spock’s Brain.”

They have all this wonderful technology. Sure, there was action and adventure, and that appeals to many people, including me. "Star Trek" always spoke to that greater vision, that greater achievement, what mankind could become. And it was set in the future, when many of the troubles of the current day have been worked through. That was the real theme Gene Roddenberry [the creator of "Star Trek"] worked into the episodes.

What really struck me about the "Star Trek" shows was that there were a lot of moral issues in them. It was kind of hidden, but not hidden that well. The other thing that struck me is that they would go to planets. They would find lots of planets. That was cool at the time, because we didn’t know about exoplanets. They never talked about what kind of star it was, or the orbit, or anything. They never really talked about the habitable zone, things like that. I just always loved science fiction. I liked that it showed the possibilities, let me dream about what I might like to do someday.

The Crab Nebula, the result of a bright supernova explosion seen by Chinese and other astronomers in the year 1054, is 6,500 light-years from Earth. At its center is a neutron star, a super-dense star produced by the supernova. 50 Years of NASA and Star Trek Connections

Fans of the television science fiction series Star Trek were saddened when the show’s final episode aired on June 3, 1969. It seemed like the end of a very short era, as the program had only been on the air for three seasons. Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry first had the idea for a science fiction television series in 1964, set in the 23rd century aboard a starship whose crew was dedicated to exploring the galaxy. The National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) network introduced the show to its fall 1966 lineup, with the first episode airing on Sep. 8. To put that date in perspective, NASA was preparing to launch the Gemini 10 mission, and was still almost three years from landing humans on the Moon, while Star Trek ’s Starship Enterprise was making fictional journeys through the galaxy. What made the show particularly attractive to late 1960s television audiences was the makeup of the Enterprise ’s crew. Among the major characters were an African-American woman Communications Officer, an Asian-American helmsman, and a half-human half-Vulcan Science Officer, eventually joined by a Russian-born ensign. While the show enjoyed good ratings during its first two seasons, lower ratings in the third season led to its eventual cancellation, despite a concerted letter-writing campaign from its dedicated fans.

After the show’s cancellation, Star Trek lived on and prospered in syndication and attracted an ever-growing fan base. Often dubbed “trekkies,” these fans held the first Star Trek convention in 1972 and became a dedicated constituency. When in 1976 NASA announced that it would name its first space shuttle orbiter Constitution , in honor of its rollout on September 17, the anniversary of the ratification of the United States Constitution, trekkies engaged in a dedicated letter writing campaign to have the orbiter named Enterprise , after the starship in the television series. This time the fans’ letter writing campaign was successful. President Gerald R. Ford sided with the trekkies and directed NASA to rechristen the first space shuttle. When it rolled out of its manufacturing plant in Palmdale, California, it bore the name Enterprise . On hand to see the event were many of the original cast members of the show as well as its creator Rodenberry, hosted by NASA Administrator James C. Fletcher. Thus began a long relationship between the space agency and the Star Trek brand.

When NASA was developing the Space Shuttle in the 1970s, it needed to recruit a new group of astronauts to fly the vehicle, deploy the satellites, and perform the science experiments, and was encouraging women and minorities to apply to be astronauts. The Agency hired Nichelle Nichols, who played Lt. Nyota Uhura as the Communications Officer on the Starship Enterprise in Star Trek , to record a recruiting video . She came to JSC in March 1977, and accompanied by Apollo 12 and Skylab 3 astronaut Alan L. Bean, toured the center and filmed scenes for the video in Mission Control and other facilities. NASA hoped that her stature and popularity would encourage women and minorities to apply, and indeed they did. In January 1978, when NASA announced the selection of 35 new astronauts, among them for the first time were women and minorities. Nichols returned to JSC in September 2010 with the Traveling Space Museum, an organization that partners with schools to promote space studies. She toured Mission Control and the International Space Station (ISS) trainer accompanied by astronaut B. Alvin Drew. She also flew aboard NASA’s Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) airborne telescope aircraft in September 2015, possibly the closest any of the cast members has come to flying in space.

Meanwhile, the Star Trek brand renewed itself in 1979 as a full length motion picture with the original TV series cast members reprising their roles. This first film was followed over the years with a number of sequels.  And on the small screen, a reboot of sorts occurred in 1987 with the premiere of Star Trek: The Next Generation , set in the 24th century aboard the Enterprise-D , a next generation starship with a new crew. That series lasted seven seasons and was followed by a near-bewildering array of spin-off series, all built on the Star Trek brand, that continue to this day.

The actor who played Lt. Cmdr. Montgomery “Scotty” Scott, the Starship Enterprise ’s chief engineer, James Doohan, had early associations with NASA. In April 1967, Doohan visited NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center, now Armstrong Flight Research Center in California, where he spent time with NASA pilot Bruce A. Peterson. Peterson was a test pilot for the experimental M2-F2 lifting body aircraft who a month later barely survived a horrific crash of the vehicle. Peterson became the inspiration for the 1970s TV series The Six-Million Dollar Man , and film of the crash was included in the show’s opening credits.  Doohan narrated a documentary film about the Space Shuttle released shortly before Columbia made its first flight in April 1981. In January 1991, Doohan visited JSC and accompanied by astronaut Mario Runco (who sometimes goes by the nickname “Spock”) toured the Shuttle trainers and Mission Control and tried his hand at operating the Shuttle robot arm in the Manipulator Development Facility. In a unique tribute, astronaut Neil A. Armstrong, the first person to step on the lunar surface, made a rare public appearance to speak at Doohan’s retirement in 2004, as “one old engineer to another.”

George Takei, who played Starship Enterprise helmsman Lt. Hikaru Sulu, and his husband Brad, visited JSC in May 2012. Invited by both Asian Pacific American and LGBT Employee Resource Groups, Takei spoke of leadership and inclusiveness, including overcoming challenges while in Japanese-American internment camps during World War II and as a member of the LGBT community.  He mentioned that Star Trek was ahead of its time in creating a future when all members of society could equally participate in great undertakings, at a time when the country was struggling through the Civil Rights movement and the conflict in Southeast Asia.  He was greatly inspired by the inclusiveness that is part of NASA’s culture.  JSC Center Director Michael L. Coats presented Takei with a plaque including an American flag flown aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis ’ STS-135 mission.  He also visited Mission Control and spent some time with Robonaut.

The Science Officer aboard the Starship Enterprise , the half-human, half-Vulcan Mr. Spock, was played by Leonard Nimoy.  The actor was on hand in September 2012 when Space Shuttle Enterprise arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, on the last leg of its journey to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, where it is currently on display.  “This is a reunion for me,” said Nimoy.  “Thirty-five years ago, I met the Enterprise for the first time.”  As noted earlier, the Star Trek cast was present when the first Space Shuttle rolled out of its factory in 1976.  Following his death in 2015, European Space Agency astronaut Samantha Cristaforetti paid tribute to Nimoy aboard the ISS by wearing a Star Trek Science Officer uniform, giving the Vulcan greeting and quoting Captain Kirk, “Of all the souls I have encountered … his was the most human.”

At the helm of the Starship Enterprise was Captain James T. Kirk, played by William Shatner.  The actor is a life-long advocate of science and space exploration.  His relationship with NASA began during the original series, with references to the space agency incorporated into several story lines.  An episode that aired in February 1967 featured a photograph of the Gemini 6 launch hanging on the wall.  In 2011, Shatner hosted and narrated a NASA documentary celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Space Shuttle program , and gave his time and voice to other NASA documentaries.  Most recently, he narrated the NASA video We Are Going , about our plans to land the next man and the first woman on the Moon by 2024.  NASA recognized Shatner’s contributions in 2014 with a Distinguished Public Service Medal , the highest award the agency bestows on non-government individuals.   The citation for the medal, presented to Shatner by NASA Deputy Associate Administrator for Communications Bob Jacobs, read, “For outstanding generosity and dedication to inspiring new generations of explorers around the world, and for unwavering support for NASA and its missions of discovery.”

Elements of the Star Trek universe have made their way not only into popular culture but also into NASA culture. As noted above, Star Trek fans were instrumental in naming the first Space Shuttle Enterprise . When NASA was designing an Earth observation facility for the ISS to make use of its optical quality window, its formal acronym became the Window Observational Research Facility (WORF). The connection between that acronym and the name of a Klingon officer aboard the Enterprise in the Star Trek: The Next Generation TV series was an opportunity not to be missed. On the facility’s official patch, underneath the acronym WORF is the name written in the fictional Klingon language. Several astronaut crews have embraced Star Trek themes for their unofficial photographs. The STS-54 crew of Space Shuttle Endeavour dressed in the uniforms of Starship Enterprise officers from “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan,” the second full-length feature motion picture of the series. Space Shuttle and ISS crews create Space Flight Awareness (SFA) posters for their missions, and more than one has embraced Star Trek motifs. The ISS Expedition 21 crew dressed in uniforms from the original series, while the STS-134 crew of the Space Shuttle Endeavour chose as their motif the 2009 reboot motion picture Star Trek .

In the documentary “ NASA on the Edge of Forever: Science in Space ,” host NASA astronaut Victor Glover states, “Science and Star Trek go hand-in-hand.” The film explores how for the past 50 years, Star Trek has influenced scientists, engineers, and even astronauts to reach beyond their potential. While the ISS doesn’t speed through the galaxy like the Starship Enterprise , much of the research conducted aboard the orbiting facility can make the fiction of Star Trek come a little closer to reality. Several of the cast members from the original TV series added their viewpoints in the documentary, along with those of NASA managers and scientists. The mutual attraction between NASA and Star Trek is that both, to paraphrase the opening voiceover from the TV series, seek to explore and seek out new worlds, and to boldly go where no one has gone before. Astronauts arrive at Kennedy Space Center as first crew for Boeing's Starliner spacecraft

It's not just another ride for a pair of veteran NASA astronauts who arrived to the Space Coast ahead of their flight onboard Boeing's CST-100 Starliner.

Barry "Butch" Wilmore and Sunita "Suni" Williams, who both joined NASA's astronaut corps more than two decades ago, will be the commander and pilot for the Crew Flight Test mission of the much-delayed spacecraft.

It's set to launch with humans on board for the first time atop an Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station's Space Launch Complex 41 on May 6 at 10:34 p.m., headed to the International Space Station.

The pair flew into KSC in their T-38 jets, landing at the former space shuttle landing facility Thursday afternoon and speaking with reporters ahead of the vanguard mission.

"This mission going off well? Of course we want it to do that," said Wilmore from the tarmac. "Do we expect it to go perfectly? This is the first human flight of the spacecraft. I'm sure we'll find things out. That's why we do this. This is a test flight . When you do test, you expect to find things. And we expect to find things."

Wilmore, who was part of NASA's 2000 astronaut class, was the pilot for STS-129 on board Space Shuttle Atlantis for an 11-day mission in 2009 and then stayed on board the ISS for nearly five months from 2014–2015. Williams was part of NASA's 1998 astronaut class and had two long-term stays on board the ISS, first flying in 2006 on Space Shuttle Discovery on STS-116 and flying home on Space Shuttle Atlantis on STS-117 in 2007 after 192 days in space. She then flew on a Soyuz in 2012 for a four-month stay on board.

This is the third trip to space for both, but the pair are not resting on their laurels with 11 days to go before launch. Wilmore said the coming days could be summed up in three words.

"Review, review, and review—everything we've been working on. There's so much into this, there's a fair amount of responsibility, obviously, that we hold," he said. "We are ready. But we want to stay ready. We've got a week to continue to make sure that there's not a single event that we have prepared for that we're not ready for."

This marks only the sixth new U.S.-based spacecraft to carry humans following Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, the space shuttle and the most recent entrant, SpaceX's Crew Dragon. Dragon's first human spaceflight came nearly four years ago, launching May 30, 2020, with its own pair of veteran NASA astronauts, Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley.

Williams said she got a pep talk from Behnken.

"I just got a text from Bob last night, and he was pretty pumped that we were coming down here. He was like, "I'm reliving it in my mind where we were,'" she said. "He gives us his best and is ready for us to go fly."

SpaceX and Boeing had been running fairly close in development at the end of the last decade as one of two companies NASA awarded contracts for under its Commercial Crew Program. The goal of the program was to replace U.S.-based flights after the end of the Space Shuttle Program in 2011, which forced a reliance on Russia for flights to the ISS on board Soyuz spacecraft.

Starliner, though, ran into trouble on its first uncrewed test flight in December 2019 and was not able to rendezvous with the ISS, forcing a major overhaul of Boeing's program including hardware, software and management changes. That led to the successful redo of that uncrewed test flight in 2022, but further hardware delays have now made it so next month's planned launch will come more than four years behind schedule.

Since then, SpaceX has proceeded full bore, having now flown 50 humans to space onboard its fleet of four Crew Dragon spacecraft on 13 missions, and has three more on the schedule to fly before the end of the year.

Wilmore said Starliner took longer, but it's time.

"We've had a few delays because we weren't ready," he said. "There are literally 1,000 events that are taking place simultaneously as you step up and get prepared to launch and during the launch sequence, and then the spacecraft itself when we're on orbit."

But he's adamant all the parts are in place.

"There's so much going on. It is not easy. I think we make it look easy. That's our goal," he said. "We want the general public to think it's easy, but it's not. It's way hard. We wouldn't be here if we weren't ready. We are ready. The spacecraft's ready. And the teams are ready."

Boeing's CFT mission now aims for about an eight-day stay on board the ISS. The major goals for its crew are to test out both docking backup systems on approach and landing operations when it heads back to Earth, which will feature a parachute-assisted touchdown in the western U.S., unlike the watery splashdowns off the Florida coast taken by SpaceX's Crew Dragon.

If successful, it lines Boeing up to begin operational missions to the ISS as early as February 2025. That first mission, dubbed Starliner-1, has three of its four crew members already named.

Boeing is contracted for six crew rotation mission through the end of the ISS's operation as early as 2030. SpaceX and Boeing would transition to sharing one mission each per year for NASA until the ISS is decommissioned.

For her part, Williams pumped up Starliner's role in the NASA program now, as well as its role with NASA's future Artemis program missions on the Orion spacecraft.

"It has a lot of similar things that Orion has," she said. "So I think if I was a young astronaut, and I was thinking about going to the moon, I think I'd put my hand up and say I want to fly Starliner."

Tracking tiny movements means big impacts for earth science.

The next addition to NASA’s fleet of Earth Science orbiters is launching in 2024 and will represent a monumental leap forward in how we monitor our changing planet. The NISAR mission is a collaboration between NASA and the Indian Space Research Organisation that’s designed to monitor and study tiny movements of Earth’s surface from events like natural disasters and climate change.

How NISAR Works

NISAR is among the most advanced radar systems on an Earth science mission to date due to its supersized antenna reflector, use of synthetic aperture radar, and ability to observe Earth in two different radar frequencies simultaneously.

Extending above the spacecraft like a giant catcher's mitt, NISAR’s antenna reflector is 39 feet (12 meters) wide – the largest ever launched as part of a NASA Earth-observing mission. This antenna creates an observational window, or swath, of the surface beneath the spacecraft that is 150 miles (242 kilometers) wide. The swath size is determined by the radar wavelength and antenna size, which is important because there is a direct relationship between antenna size and the resolution of images and data that can be captured by NISAR.

We typically want the best resolution possible, but we’re limited by the size of the antenna we can build and deploy in space. Conventionally, the resolution on a satellite is a function of the wavelength it uses and the size of the antenna. The larger the wavelength, the bigger the antenna needs to be to get quality images. At typical radar wavelengths, with a 12 meter diameter reflector, the best achievable resolution would be as coarse as 10s of kilometers, which is not very useful for observing features on Earth at the human scale.

This is why NISAR utilizes an approach called synthetic aperture radar , or SAR, to synthetically magnify the resolution achievable from the antenna. With SAR, the spacecraft sends multiple signals, or pulses, to an area as it flies overhead. Each signal gets reflected back to the spacecraft, which is meticulously designed to “catch” the reflected signals thanks to its position and velocity. Each signal in the sequence is then focused into a single high-resolution image, creating an effect as if the spacecraft is using a much larger antenna.

Radar uses radio wavelengths, which are longer than those of visible light, allowing us to see through clouds and sometimes even tree coverage to the ground below, depending on the frequency of the radio waves. We’re also able to interpret a lot of information about the surface from the way the signal returns back to the orbiter. This is because NISAR will measure the amount of scatter, or dispersion, of the signal as compared to when it was originally transmitted.

For example, a rigid, sharp angled building will bounce the signal back to the receiver differently than a leafy tree. Different radio frequencies are better used for different surfaces because they are influenced by the type of surface being analyzed. To this end, NISAR is the first mission to use two different radar frequencies simultaneously. The L-Band can be used to monitor heavier vegetation and landscapes while the S-Band is better tuned for lighter vegetation and crop growth. The two wavelengths in general extend the range of sensitivity of the measurement to smaller and larger changes.

This combination of tools and features will allow NISAR to construct global maps of changes in the position of any given pixel at a scale of just centimeters as well as subtle changes in reflectivity due to land cover changes on all land and ice surfaces twice every 12 days. The resolution combined with repetition will allow scientists to monitor the changes taking place on our planet in a matter of days more comprehensively than ever before.

Because of the massive amount of data produced by NISAR, we’ll be able to closely monitor the impacts of environmental events including earthquakes, landslides, and ice-sheet collapses. Data from NISAR could even be used to assess the risk of natural hazards.

Scientists can use NISAR to monitor tiny movements in Earth’s surface in areas prone to volcanic eruptions or landslides. These measurements are constructed using what’s called an interferogram , which looks at how the maps generated for each pass of the spacecraft have changed over time. For example, we could see immediate changes to the topography after an earthquake with an interferogram made from images NISAR collected shortly before and soon after the event.

By tracking and recording these events and other movements on the surface leading up to natural disasters, it may be possible to identify warning signs that can improve detection and disaster response.

And NISAR isn’t just limited to studying the solid Earth. As missions prior have done, it will also be able to generate maps of polar ice sheets over time and detect changes in permafrost based on the regional movement of the soil below. These measurements will give climate scientists a clear picture of how much the ice is moving and deforming due to climate change and where it is thawing as the ground warms.

Additionally, NISAR can track land usage, deforestation, sea levels, and crustal deformation, informing scientists about the impacts of environmental and climate change on Earth.

NISAR is scheduled to launch in 2024 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, India, and will enter a polar orbit 460 miles (747 kilometers) above Earth. For the first 90 days after launch, the spacecraft will undergo checks and commissioning before beginning scientific observations for a primary mission designed to last three years.

Science from the mission will be downlinked to both NASA and ISRO ground stations below with data and the tools to process it freely available for download and use to all professional and citizen scientists.
