What they say and thier action is not same. we are the one who will pay and we are the one who has to adjust everywhere, not them. Never ever book from them.

Sikkim (Nepali: सिक्किम ; Sikkimese: སུ་ཁྱིམ་ ) in East India , is a mountainous border state in the Himalayan foothills. It is bounded by China ( Tibet ), Nepal and Bhutan to its north, west and east respectively, with West Bengal forming its southern border. It is a place of great natural beauty. The steep, snow-capped mountains will take your breath away, not just figuratively because of the view, but also literally due to their altitude. Through its deep valleys flow two important rivers, rapidly in the north, getting somewhat sluggish in the south. Streams and waterfalls that will have you reaching out to your camera can be found at every turn of the winding ghat roads.

Apart from its natural beauty, Sikkim has much to offer. Monasteries offer you a glimpse of Tibetan Buddhist culture. The food, reflecting Tibetan and Nepali cultures, is great.

The name Sikkim is said to have been derived from su him, meaning "beautiful home", which makes sense as it is beautiful and the people will make you feel at home. Getting to this place is a bit of a challenge though, due to poor connectivity and because it borders China. Non-Indians get a free permit on arrival in Sikkim, while Indians don't need this. However, both Indians and foreigners must obtain an additional permit for visiting the north and trekking. Sikkim is home to the only open border crossing between India and China, though this crossing is only open to traders and not to tourists.

Till December 2021, Sikkim was divided into 4 administrative districts, rather imaginatively called North, South, East and West.

The last two have been sub-divided since, forming two new districts. The official names of the original ones have been changed; now they are called by the names of the town where the district headquarters are. This guide continues to use the previous sub-division, as it is more relevant for the traveler.

Understand [ edit ]

Sikkim covers an area of about 7,300 square kilometres, nearly 40% of which is forested. Kanchenjunga (8,586 m) is the third-highest mountain on earth. The mountain is venerated as seat of the Gods. Sikkim is renowned for wide rhododendron woods with 450 different kinds of orchids. The orchids blossom from March to May.

History [ edit ]

For a long time, Sikkim was a Buddhist kingdom, isolated in the Himalayas, populated by Lepchas and Bhotia , two tribes of Tibetan origin, and governed by the Namgyal Dynasty from Tibet. Sikkim was declared a British protectorate in 1861. The British government encouraged the immigration of Nepalese workers, and today about 75% of the population is Nepalese. Sikkim was an Indian protectorate from 1947 until 1975, when after a couple of years of unrest, a referendum criticized by some resulted in overwhelming approval of a proposal to abolish the monarchy (which had continued to rule during Sikkim's years as a protectorate), and Sikkim later that year became the 22nd federal state of India.

Though it had long been the subject of a territorial dispute between China and India, in 2003, China agreed to recognise Indian sovereignty over Sikkim in return for Indian recognition of Chinese sovereignty over Tibet .

The official language and lingua franca of Sikkim is Nepali , though Sikkimese is the most common native language of locals. Many other languages such as Dzongkha and Tibetan are also spoken by smaller numbers. However, Hindi is also widely spoken as a second language, and all educated people are able to speak English.

Entry permits to Sikkim [ edit ]

An Inner Line Permit (ILP) is required and provided upon arrival for foreigners. Upon arrival, have your passport, a photocopy of it, of your visa to India and passport photos ready at the check post. When entering and exiting Sikkim, your passport will be stamped much in the same manner as when crossing national borders. Obtaining a permit is a pure bureaucratic formality and usually takes a few minutes. You will need to fill in an application form and provide a few passport photos (3 to visit tsomgo Lake in East and 3 to visit North Sikkim). If only visiting West Sikkim, 2 passport photos are required.

The permit can be obtained when crossing the Sikkim state border by road in Rangpo or Meili and from the Sikkim Tourism Centre in Siliguri located at the S.N.T. bus stand (the place from which government buses depart for Sikkim: S.N.T. means "Sikkim Nationalized Transport") in the vicinity of Siliguri Junction railway station (different from New Jalpaiguri station, and reachable from there by taxi/public shared taxi). The website of Ministry of Home Affairs states that permits can also be obtained at large international airports (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata), but locating the relevant facilities has proven difficult for some travellers, due to incompetence of personnel. Permits can also be applied for at the time of Indian visa application, or at 14 Panchsheel Marg, New Delhi 110021 (011 26115346) and 4/1 Middleton Street, Kolkata 700071 (033 22817905). Within India Inner Line Permits may be issued by:

The permit is valid for 2 weeks from the border entry to Sikkim. It can by extended for 2 additional weeks at the Foreigners' Registration Office , Kazi Road, Gangtok (Tel. 03592-223041) or from the police station at Mangan , Gyalshing or Namchi The Inner Line Permit allows travels in Southern Sikkim and great parts of Eastern and Western Sikkim with the exception of treks in high mountain areas.

For the border regions, e.g. Tsomgo Lake in East Sikkim, most parts of North Sikkim and treks into high mountain regions, including Dzongri and Singalila Ridge a Protected Area Permit (PAP) is required. Foreigners must visit these regions in groups of at least 2 persons accompanied by a representative of an officially acknowledged tour operator. The agency will also apply for the Protected Area Permits.

Certain regions, e.g. Nathu La in East Sikkim or Gurudongmar Lake in North Sikkim, cannot be visited by foreigners.

By plane [ edit ]

Sikkim's first airport at Pakyong ( PYG IATA ) has been opened, with SpiceJet flying from Kolkata and Delhi to Pakyong airport in East Sikkim and Guwahati In Assam and return flight to Pakyong and then to Kolkata- daily flights. There are plans for international service to Paro via Druk Air.

The nearest airport outside Sikkim is Bagdogra ( IXB IATA ) in Siliguri in North Bengal, which is 124 km and approximately four hours drive from Gangtok . Air India, SpiceJet and Go Air service Bagdogra linking it with other major airports in India (including Guwahati ). Druk Air flies twice weekly from Bangkok, stopping in Bagdogra before continuing to Paro in Bhutan. Sikkim is linked to Bagdogra airport by a daily helicopter service to Gangtok that operates only once a day and carries four passengers

Air India offers daily flights from Delhi to Bagdogra, departure 11:15AM from Delhi, arrival 1:30PM at Bagdogra, and flights from Kolkata (CCU) daily except F departure from Kolkata 2:10PM, arrival at Bagdogra at 3:10PM. The return flight from Bagdogra to Delhi leave at 2:05PM and arrives in Delhi at 4:10PM, return flights to Kolkata depart from Bagdogra at 3:40PM and arrive in Kolkata at 4:40PM.
Druk Air (Royal Bhutan Airlines) has flights from Bangkok (Thailand) and Paro (Bhutan) to Bagdogra. Flights from Bangkok leave on M and Th 8:55AM and arrive at 10:30AM at Bagdogra, flights to Bangkok leave Bagdogra on Sa and Tu at noon and arrive in Bangkok at 4:30PM. Construction of a 50-km rail link from Sevoke , West Bengal to Rangpo , Sikkim started in 2009, but is not expected to be ready until 2019, and it'll take another few years until it reaches another 40 km to Gangtok.

As of January 2021, the nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP) in Siliguri , which is a major station with connections to major cities throughout and north and central India. The distance from Delhi to New Jalpaiguri by train is 1,970 km, and 580 km from Kolkata to New Jalpaiguri.

By bus [ edit ]

The Sikkim government has fixed rate (and fixed schedule) buses plying between Siliguri and Gangtok.

There is a daily service from Darjeeling to Gantok and vice versa, operated by Sikkim National Transport (SNT). The distance between Darjeeling and Gangtok is about 120 km. Departure from both places at 8:30AM. Travel time 6 hr 30 min.
Services from Siliguri to Gangtok and v.v. are operated by Sikkim National Transport (SNT) and North Bengal Transport (NBT). Busses leave Siliguri at 6 (NBT), 7, 9AM and 1PM (SNT), and Gangtok at 7 and 8AM (SNT), 12:30PM (NBT), 1PM (SNT). Travel time is 6 hrs.

The SNT bus stand at Gangtok is in Pajor Stadium Road. In many cases it is, however, more convenient to get off at MG Marg. The private bus stand is on National Highway NH-31A, about 2 km south of the city centre.

After 44 years of closure, the Nathu La pass to Tibet , China – a part of the historic Silk Road – opened again in July 2006. At the moment, only local traders are permitted to cross the border here, and it is not open to tourists. Indian citizens require a permit to visit the Indian side of the pass, while foreigners are not permitted to visit.

Dodrul Chorten, Gangtok . Built in 1945-46 with a complete mandala set of Dorji Phurpa (Bajra Kilaya), a set of Ka-gyur holy Books, complete 'zung'(mantras) and many religious objects.
Dubdi Monastery . The first monastery established after the consecration ceremony of the first chogyal. It is situated on a hill above Yuksom and can be approached by trekking only, including a steep slope taking about 35 minutes.
Enchey Monastery, Gangtok . 200-year-old monastery, famous for the mask dance 'Cham' performed in January.
Karma Kagyu Monastery , Phodong ( 32 km from Gangtok on the Gangtok Lachung Highway. ). Built in 1740, the monastery is famous for its old wall murals.
Kewzing Monastery ( near Kewzing, South Sikkim ). Built during the reign of Chogyal Thutob Namgyal.
Khechepalri Monastery ( above the famous Khechepalri Lake, near Yuksum ).
Labrang Monastery ( about 500 meters uphill from Phodang Monastery ). Built at the end of 19th cent, this monastery belongs to the Nyingmapa sect. The ruins of Tumlong , the third capital of Sikkim are nearby.
Lachen Monastery ( North Sikkim ). Built in 1806.

Pal Zurmang Kagyud Monastery , Lingdum ( on the Rumtek - Ranka - Gangtok road, about 45 min drive from Gangtok ). A fine example of Tibetan monastic architecture.
Pemayangtse Monastery ( Perfect Sublime Lotus ) ( 118 km from Gangtok, 2 km from Pelling and 9 km from Gyalshing ). 7AM to 7PM . The monastery was founded by Lhatson Champo , the protector of Sikkim. It is one of the most important monasteries in the country. There are pictures of Guru Rinpoche and Lhatsun Chenpo , thangkas and wall paintings in the big gompa, which is three storeys high,. The wooden sculpture on top represents Sang Phok Patri , Guru Rinpoche's abode in heaven. The abbot of the monastery carved and painted the sculpture himself. It is reported that he was working for 5 years on the representations of demons, animals, Buddhas and boddhisatvas. Every year at New Year (February/March) a great festival (cham) is held at the monastery. In 1980 the monastery founded the Denjong Padma Choeling Academy for orphans and children without means. ₹20 .
Phodang Monastery ( 28 km from Gangtok ). Built by the Chogyal Gyurmed Namgyal in the first quarter of 18th cent. It is considered one of the most beautiful monasteries in Sikkim. It has beautiful old mural paintings. Today, about 250 monks live there.
Rhenock Monastery ( 63 km from Gangtok ).
Rumtek Monastery . – 24 km from Gangtok in East Sikkim – the main seat of the Karma Kagyu (Black hat) school of Tibetan Buddhism in Sikkim. This school was founded in the 12th cent. by Karmapa Duseun Khyenpa in Central Tibet. The 16th Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje had to leave Tibet in 1959 and was invited to stay at Rumtek. He was granted land by the king of Sikkim and erected a new monastery here. Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje is considered one of the greatest Tibetan personalities of the 20th cent and had great influence in spreading Tibetan Buddhism in the West. When he died in 1981 he left a rich monastery of international reputation. The new Rumtek monastery consists of the main temple, a golden stuoa, the Karma Shri Naranda Institute, some smaller shrines and a guesthouse. Foreigners have to show their passport and register. The prayer hall is ornamented with wall paintings and thangkas. A smaller room beside the main hall is painted in gold on a black background depicting angry deities. The Karma Shri Naranda Institute was built in 1984 in traditional Tibetan style. It is the most splendid building in the monastery. The ashes of the 16th Karmapa are kept in a guilded chorten, 4 m high, decorated with turquoise and corals. A path with flowers and prayer flags, at a distance of 4 km from the new monastery leads to the old monastery , which was built by the 9th Karmapa Wangchuk Dorje in 1740, but fell into disrepair.
Sanga Chelling Monastery ( about 7 km from Pemayangtse, about 45 minutes walk from Pelling ). The name literally means "the island of esoteric teaching." Built in 1697, it is the second oldest monastery in Sikkim.
Sang Monastery ( near Rumtek ). Built in 1912.
Sangacholing Monastery . Erected in 1697, it is considered one of the oldest monasteries in Sikkim. It is on a steep hilltop and can only be accessed by a 40 min trek through the forest.
Simik Monastery ( near Singtam ).
Tashiding Monastery . It is considered as the holiest monastery in Sikkim. It is situated on a cone-shaped mountain, 19 km south-east of Yoksum . It was erected in 1717, according to the legend on a place which was connected with the peak of Kanchenjunga by a rainbow. The monastery consists of several stupas (corten), chapels and the main temple. The relics of the lamas of Sikkims are preserved in a number of smalles chorten. The Nyingmapa-Buddha-Festival is celebrated in the monastery on the 15th day of the first month of the Tibetan moon calendar.
Tsuk-La-Khang Monastery, Gangtok ( within the premises of the Royal Palace ). It was used for royal weddings and coronations.
Yangyang Monastery ( at Yangyang, 10km downhill from Rabongla ). Built in 1840

Scenery [ edit ]

Baba mandir . Eight kilometers from Nathu la pass is the original Harbhajan Singh Baba Temple from which the Indo-Bhutan border is approximately 6 km and the India-China border is around 5 km. A must visit place for all those who like to explore places!
Chungthang . Chungthang is in the northern part of Sikkim. It is located at the confluence of Lachen and Lachung Chu and is the starting point of the river teesta. It is believed that Chungthang is blessed by a guru Rimpoche.
Gurudongmar Lake . Gurudongmar lake is at an altitude of 5,150 metres. The lake is considered sacred. It has crystal clear waters and the way leading to it is a cold desert. The lake is frozen during winter, except for a small part which is considered to be touched by Guru Padmasambhava. Visits to the lake are allowed after obtaining a permit from the Government. Foreign nationals are not allowed to go there. The whole area is controlled by army, due to its proximity to China. The air pressure is only 55% compared to sea level, making altitude sickness a certain outcome for any longer stay without lengthy acclimatisation. For day trip visitors a night stay at Lachen is advised to allow altitude acclimatisation. It is recommended that visitors do not run or speak loudly, rather sit by the lake enjoying its beauty and the surrounding mountains. Tourists are generally asked to leave the place by 1-2PM, after which the wind speeds picks up and is enough to carry small stones.
Kabi Lungstok . Kabi Lungtsok is a historic place, located on North Sikkim Highway, 17 km away from Gangtok . This is the same place where the historic treaty between Lepcha Chief Te-Kung-Tek and the Bhutia Chief Khey-Bum-Sar was signed ritually.
Nathu la pass . The Nathu la pass lies on the Sino-Indian border and is only open for Indian tourists. People who wish to visit Nathu la should get special permission one day in advance. Please note, however, that the pass is not open on Mondays & Tuesdays every week.It closes in the winter and opens in May.

There are many adventure activities possible to do in Sikkim. Tourists can go for trekking, rafting and kayaking, mountain biking, mountaineering Para Gliding and yak safaris.

Trekking [ edit ]

Trekking is a popular adventure activity in Sikkim. Some of the popular trek routes are:

Dzongri - Gechala Trek : The 8 - 9 day trek leads to the base of Kanchenjunga, the third highest peak in the world. The route passes through alpine forest, lush green meadows and past glacial lakes. People with lesser time can opt for the Dzongri trek (5 days) which provides great panoramic views of Kanchenjunga and its surrounding peaks.
Maenam Hill Trek :Maenam (10,500 ft) is a hill towering above the town of Rabangla offering a great panoramic views of Kanchenjunga and its surrounding peaks. It is 3 - 4 hrs (one way) hike from Ravangla. Spending a night atop Maenam hill is a thrilling experience with a spectacular sunrise in the morning. There are no places to stay in Maenam Hilltop, so tents and food need to be carried.

White water rafting [ edit ]

Large stretches of the two major rivers of Sikkim, Teesta and Rangit are suitable for rafting.

Mountain biking [ edit ]

The experience of dangerous, yet exciting, sports like mountain biking is an enormous attraction for visitors who come to Sikkim to spend some days of relaxation in the touch of nature. So undoubtedly a place like Sikkim, where mountains are a prime part of the landscape, an off-road cycle ride through the uneven hills, jungles and water bodies works like a magnet for all who are obsessed with exploring new thrills.

Eat [ edit ]

Delicious momos stuffed with meat (also known as 'Dumpling'). For vegetarians, veg momos are also available along with Thukpas (noodle soup). Phagshapa is a strip of pork fat stewed with radishes and dried chillies.

Chhang/thumba/tongba/chee - Locally brewed mildly intoxicating millet beer, sometimes served in a bamboo glass with a wooden straw.
HIT Beer - A local favourite manufactured by a brewery owned by the Bollywood actor Danny Denzongpa.
Liquor - Whisky, brandy and rum are very cheap in Sikkim as compared to other parts of India.

Bordered by Bhutan , China’s Tibet Autonomous region and Nepal , Sikkim is that state in India which is special and unique from every perspective – geographical location, climate, diversity, culture and the list goes on. Having visited Sikkim multiple times, I have received unimaginable hospitality from my hosts and made great friends. It has been a place where I’ve listened to stories about heritage and culture from my hosts, where I’ve found myself exchanging travel stories with fellow travelers in a hostel dorm and where I have learnt the value of time.

In this blog, I have attempted to combine all of these experiences to put out a well crafted source of information to help you plan your trip to Sikkim without any hassle.

Sikkim happens to be I ndia’s first fully organic state .

How to reach Sikkim

Bagdogra Airport and New Jalpaiguri are the nearest airport and railway stations to Sikkim . Once you reach any of these two places, you’d probably want to get to Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim to continue your journey further.

To reach Gangtok , you could either book a private vehicle or hop onto a shared vehicle . The wisest way to make the journey a comfortable one without spending much is to book two seats on a shared vehicle. Works best for budget travelers. You could also check out NE Taxi or Wizzride , which offers luxury vehicles on a shared basis.

Remember to keep your government IDs with you all the time. There’s a possibility that you might have to show it at the check post in the border of Sikkim.

How to travel within Sikkim

Trying to figure out how to travel from one place to another within Sikkim can take some time. I’ve attempted to break down all possible modes of transport that you can avail to travel within the state.

For backpackers and budget travelers, shared sumos are the best means of conveyance to travel within various places in Sikkim. Initially it might appear a bit confusing but all you need to do is have a rough idea of the route or simply ask a local, they’d be more than happy to help. When you’re in Gangtok, remember the names of a few points like Deorali taxi stand and Rumtek taxi stand from where you can get tickets for other places like Ravangla, Pelling, Namchi, Geyzing, Jorethang and Singtam. Travelling in any of these routes would cost you between INR 100-300 , depending on the distance. A wise idea is to book two seats if you’d want to travel more comfortably without making a hole in your pocket by booking an entire cab.
More comfortable way to travel to various places within Sikkim is by booking a private vehicle. You can book them directly through your hotel, travel agents or can look up NE Taxi or Wizzride online which offer reserved vehicles and sightseeing packages.
To get from one place to another within Gangtok, the easiest way is to grab a local cab . They usually ply on shared basis but might insist you to reserve it. In any case, there is no possibility of you being cheated for money in Sikkim so you can rely on the rates the cabs ask from you.

Best time to visit Sikkim

The months when the weather is pleasant in Sikkim are October to November and March to May . During this time, the roads to North Sikkim, Nathu La Pass are open and there is no risk of roads getting blocked due to heavy snowfall. The state receives heavy rainfall between June to September and landslides are a common phenomena during this period. Thus, traveling should be strictly avoided over these months. From mid-December to end of February, possibilities of roads being open for North and parts of East Sikkim are usually low. However, other parts of Sikkim are open and plans can be made accordingly.

Popular Tourist Hubs in Sikkim

Gangtok is the hub from where you may proceed to your next destination in Sikkim. It’s a well developed and a vibrant town with many interesting places to visit on a day tour. There are a plenty of chic cafes and restaurants serving authentic Nepali cuisines to relish on. Unlike many other towns in the hills, Gangtok is well lit till about 10pm and some of the pubs are open even beyond that time.

You may not have to allot too many days to explore Gangtok specifically but it can be a rest stop between covering North Sikkim and other parts. You may choose to add in a couple of extra days for Gangtok at the end of your trip so that you can relax a bit, indulge in some shopping and get your hands on souvenirs to take back home.

Things to do in Gangtok

An important hub in the map of South Sikkim , Ravangla, is a fine blend of tranquility and spirituality. It is located 80 kms away from Gangtok and takes about 3 hours to reach . In Ravangla, you will often find yourself playing hide and seek between clouds. Being a comparatively slower town, it is a lovely place to spend a day or two and wake up to the gorgeous views of Himalayan peaks of Mt. Kanchendzonga, Mt. Sinialchu, Mt. Kabru and Mt. Narsing.

Things to do in Ravangla

Buddha Park , also known as Tathagata Tsal situated within Rabong Gompa is the most popular tourist spot in Ravangla. The 130 ft high statue of Gautam Buddha, set against the backdrop of Himalayan ranges is a marvelous sight. The entire area is very well maintained and has ample space for visitors to sit and relax. There are souvenir shops and cafeterias where you could give a peek too. The park is open from 9 am to 5pm.
Ravangla is the starting point of Maenam Hill Trek , which can be covered in a day. A steep trail through the Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary would lead you to the highest point of the trek, at an altitude of 10,300 ft. You could expect to spot Red Panda, Himalayan Black Bear and many species of deer on the trail. The view from the top is unimaginable, with an array of Himalayan ranges right before you. The valley of Kalimpong and Darjeeling are also visible on a clear day. If you intend to spend a night, you must carry all your camping gears and have a guide with you as there is no provision of hiring tents or camping gears in Ravangla.
You could visit Doling Monastery and Seven Mirror lake , a fascinating spot which is not too famous among travelers yet, mostly because of the connectivity. You’d have to hire a cab to reach this place and get back to Ravangla as it is situated in a secluded area. If you have a bike with you, it would be quite convenient to visit this place.

Pelling is a spectacular destination in West Sikkim and a box full of treasure with a bundle of incredible places to visit. Apart from its enticing natural beauty, there are places of historical significance, spiritual relevance and architectural marvels. Pelling is on the verge of developing quite fast, with many luxury hotels being functional now. To cover Pelling and its surrounding places of interest, you should set aside at least three days. But in case you’re on a short trip, there are many companies that offer day long sightseeing packages combining the best of these places.

Things to do in Pelling

Visit the first skywalk of India in Pelling . Built adjacent to Sanga Choeling Monastery, this skywalk is the first of its kind. The pathway is made of glass and you’d be able to have a look down below while walking up to the 137 ft high statue of Chenrezig . It’s a thrilling experience that you should not miss at any cost.

Make a visit to the 300 year old Pemayangtse Monastery . Built in the 17 th century, this monastery is home to a large collection of Buddhist art, murals and scriptures.

Rabdentse Ruins set within chestnut groves and deciduous forests used to be the palace of Sikkimese Kings till 19th century. A walk through these ruins would be a subtle encounter with the history of Sikkim hills.
A drive for an hour and half would reach you to Kecheopalri lake , considered holy among both Buddhists and Hindus. It is commonly known as a wish fulfilling lake. The waters are crystal clear and it is said that the birds pick up even a piece of leaf that falls on the waters. Visit this holy lake and spend half a day to witness time slow down before you as you watch the swirling prayer flags beside the lake.

33 kms away from Pelling is Singshore bridge, Asia’s second highest suspension bridge . Walk down this bridge 240m long bridge and look at the breathless view around you.

Road trips in Sikkim

Even though you’re mostly on the roads while you’re visiting Sikkim, there are two specific routes that deserve a separate mention as a road trip, as driving these routes have been some of the Most Memorable Experiences in the Himalayas , for some travellers.

The Old Silk Route in East Sikkim

Previously a trade route between India and Tibet, the Old Silk Route is not yet explored at great lengths. Zuluk used to be the transit point in this route and is now a place for stopover while covering this stretch. There are many places from where one can start the journey.

An ideal start could be from Gangtok and head over to Tsongmo Lake, explore the Nathu la pass, cross the entire stretch of Zuluk and return to Gangtok circling the entire route.

The 32 hairpin bends makes it an ideal destination for unforgettable road trip. Do not miss to catch the sunrise from Lungthung Shiva sunrise point , deviate from the main road for a while to have a look at Heart lake , and take amazing photographs at Gnathang valley.

North Sikkim

It would not be an exaggeration if I say that a road trip to North Sikkim is a celestial experience. The surreal skies, lustrous snow, and bewitching high altitude lakes make North Sikkim look like a slice of heaven on earth.

The two hamlets Lachen and Lachung are the base in this trip where you’d be required to book your stay. From these two villages, you can head over to the places of higher altitude during the day.

The mesmerizing view of Gurudongmar Lake , situated at an altitude of 17,800 ft is the main highlight of a road trip to North Sikkim. Yumthang valley, Katao, Zero point add up to give you a once in a lifetime experience. You could also add Lhasar valley and Dzongu in your itinerary, two offbeat destinations in North Sikkim that do not attract the regular crowd.

7-Day itinerary for Sikkim

Day 1: Arrive at Bagdogra/New Jalpaiguri and transfer to Gangtok . Spend the evening strolling in MG Marg.

Day 2: Leave for Lachen . Reach Lachen by late afternoon and explore the village on foot; head to Lachen monastery, enjoy bonfire after dinner.

Day 3: The drive for Gurudongmar Lake starts at 4am. Visit the spectacular high altitude lake and return to Lachen by 10am. Spend some leisure time and transfer to Lachung post lunch. Spend the night in Lachung.

Day 4: Explore Yumthang Valley and Zero point . Transfer to Gangtok post lunch.

Day 5: Leave for Ravangla by 7am through the Temi Tea Estate route. Stop by the beautiful landscapes of Temi on the way. Visit Buddha Park and head to Pelling in the evening.

Day 6: Explore Pelling skywalk , Pemayangtse Monastery, Rabdentse Ruins, Kecheopalri Lake on a day tour. Stayover in Pelling.

Day 7: Leave for Bagdogra/New Jalpaiguri by 7am or earlier . You must book an evening flight/train or spend the night in Siliguri to take a flight/train the next morning, to be on the safer side.

Sikkim FAQs – Answered

Q – Do I need a permit to enter Sikkim?

Ans. An Indian National does not need any permit to enter Sikkim.

However, foreign nationals are required to have an Inner Line Permit to enter Sikkim that can be obtained from any Sikkim Tourism Office at New Delhi, Kolkata, District Magistrates Office of Darjeeling, Siliguri and Rangpo.

Q – What kinds of permits are required for Protected Areas?

Ans. For protected areas like Tsongmo lake, Nathu la Pass and North Sikkim , a Protected Area Permit is required for both Indian and Foreign nationals which is issued by the Sikkim Tourism Department and can be obtained through travel companies and tour operators.

In North Sikkim, areas beyond Singhik like Gurudongmar Lake, Thangu is a Restricted Area where only Indian Nationals are allowed to enter.

Q – Do I need any permit for visiting West and South Sikkim?

Ans. No, there is no permit required to visit West and South Sikkim for Indians.

The Inner Line Permit, issued while entering Sikkim is sufficient for Foreign Nationals.

Q – Can I visit North Sikkim without booking a package through a travel company?

Ans. Technically, no. You can’t visit North Sikkim without booking a stay-food-vehicle inclusive package from a registered tour agent because permits are not issued to individuals without making a booking.

However, if you’re going to North Sikkim on a bike, the bike rentals would arrange the permits for you and you’d have the option to book your accommodation yourself.

Things to remember

It is advisable to carry enough cash as you might not find ATMs everywhere and there might be no provision of making e payments.
Have a rough idea of the map and carry offline maps or prints, just to avoid any hassle.
Carry extra layers of warm clothes. It might get chillier than you’d expect.
Carry backup batteries for your camera if traveling to remote places. There might be no provision for charging your camera.
For once, let Google rest and approach the locals with your queries. They’d give you better recommendations.
Do not play loud music while traveling to remote areas. Respect the communities and the environment they’re used to be in.
Do not miss out on having some hot maggi in local huts. Snow and maggi is the best travel combination.
It’s advisable to carry your own steel or glass bottles and refill them. Sikkim is highly strict on the usage and disposal of plastic.

East Sikkim: Icy lakes, monasteries & Gangtok!

District headquarters: Gangtok

Starting with East Sikkim, as most tourists to Sikkim do, one is sure to be mesmerized by this land. Its lush forests, icy lakes, and monasteries make it a wonderful place to visit. Gangtok, the state’s capital, also serves as the district headquarters of East Sikkim.

The capital city of Gangtok lies in the East Sikkim district of the state. It is the most popular destination of Sikkim and attracts a number of tourists every year. Elevated at a height of 5,500 ft. Gangtok is a popular hill station and is a preferred destination for couples on their honeymoon.

Nestled in the lap of the mighty Himalayas, the city makes for an ideal trekking spot with its terrains and weather that remains cool throughout the year. Gangtok loves its quiet and serene monasteries as much as its vibrant nightlife. It has something for everyone.

Tsomgo Lake is another destination that should be on your East Sikkim itinerary. It is a glacial lake and is situated at a height of 12,313 ft. The lake is a beautiful sight to behold as it sits amidst the snow clad mountains which are reflected back in the lake’s water. Depending on the seasons, the lake changes colors from blue to a dark green. Tsomgo Lake remains frozen throughout the winter in complete contrast with the spring when the valley is covered in colorful rhododendron flowers.

One of the highest motorable passes of India, Nathu La is situated at a height of 14,450 ft. among the snow clad mountains of Sikkim. Earlier a part of the ancient silk road, the pass now functions as an open trading border post between India and China and is a major participant in the Sino-Indian trade. En route to the pass, you can also view some beautiful waterfalls and mighty mountains of Sikkim all around.

East Sikkim also has the Baba Mandir, a shrine-cum-memorial built in honor of Harbhajan Singh, a soldier of the Indian Army who went missing one day during his patrol. According to a legend, he appeared in a dream to his colleagues and informed them about his death and that he wished for a Samadhi. The Old Baba Mandir is built at the site where he was posted during his service. Since it is difficult to climb the site, a New Baba Mandir has been constructed as the samadhi for tourists to visit at Kupup.

If you are looking for an offbeat destination in East Sikkim, then Zuluk is the place for you. Roughly at a distance of 100 kilometers from the city of Gangtok is the small village of Zuluk, sitting at a height of 10,000 ft. Zuluk used to be part of the ancient silk route connecting to Tibet but is now an emerging point of interest among tourists who tend to visit the place to get a perfect view of the mighty Khangchendzonga.

West Sikkim: The embodiment of Sikkim’s beauty!

District headquarters: Gyalshing

The small hill town of Pelling is a popular tourist attraction of Sikkim after Gangtok. Situated at a height of 6,800 ft. the town is at a distance of 10 kilometers from the district headquarters of Gyalshing. The landscape of Pelling is dotted with monasteries, lakes and waterfalls along with mesmerizing views of Mount Khangchendzonga.

The Pemayangtse Monastery and the Sanga Choeling Monastery are popular among tourists in West Sikkim. The Sanga Choeling Monastery was built in the 17th century and is an important site for the devotees of Buddhism.

Close to the monastery is the Chenrezig Statue with India’s first ever Skywalk. With a height of 100 ft. and the transparent bridge, you will feel you are actually walking in the sky. Other places to explore in Pelling are the holy lake of Khecheopalri, Khangchendzonga Falls, and the Singshore Bridge, Asia’s second highest suspension bridge.

The villages of Kaluk & Rinchenpong became popular tourist attractions of West Sikkim recently, both drawing visitors for their dreamy beauty. At a height of 5,600 ft. the quiet and picturesque village of Kaluk provides magnificent views of Mount Khangchendzonga.

Rinchenpong is just 3 kilometers away from Kaluk and is popular for its monasteries, the Gurung Monastery and the Rinchenpong Monastery which houses a beautiful statue of Lord Buddha.

Yuksom is an important town for the people of Sikkim, since this is where the first Chogyal, or the monarch of Sikkim was crowned by Buddhist Lamas. The Dubdi Monastery of Yuksom is the oldest monastery in Sikkim and is a place you must visit. The town of Yuksom serves as the base for Dzongri & Goecha La treks.

North Sikkim: Sightseeing overloaded!

District headquarters: Mangan

You could visit Lachung, a scenic village situated by the side of River Lachung, popular for its apples, peaches, and apricots, and the Lachung Monastery. North Sikkim is also popular for its Zero Point, located near Lachung. It is the final destination civilians can travel before reaching the country’s border with China.

Yumthang Valley is another tourist spot you must visit when you venture into North Sikkim. The valley is known for its hot springs and the beautiful rhododendron flowers during spring.

North Sikkim receives heavy snowfall during December and is a good time to visit if you want to enjoy the snowfall. The temperature often falls below zero and the entire landscape gets covered in snow. Everything turns white!

One of the highest lakes in the world, Gurudongmar Lake sits at almost 17.800 ft. and is a mesmerizing site during the winters when it decides to freeze completely. The Khangchendzonga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is also located in this district of Sikkim.

It is home to Namchi, famously known as the cultural & religious hub of Sikkim. Two famous tourist sites are the 108 feet tall statue of Lord Shiva at the Siddheshwar Dham and the 118 feet tall statue of Guru Padmasambhava at Samdruptse Hill. The 17th century Ngadak Monastery is also a destination that you must visit to experience the serenity and peace of South Sikkim.

Summer is a good time to be in Sikkim. Being at such a high altitude, the pleasant weather of the state is the best for enjoying sightseeing & adventure between the months of March and June.

November to February is winter in Sikkim. During the winters, Sikkim is covered in snow, but looks extremely beautiful. A lot of the state festivals are held during winters and is also a good time to visit if you can bear the cold weather.

It is better to avoid the monsoon season during the months of July to September. Even though the weather is pleasant, there is a risk of landslides.

Sikkim is renowned as a state with an abundance of natural beauty. The state is proud of its rivers, lakes, and mountains, which draw travellers from all over the world.

However, all visitors must go through an admission procedure, with the exception of Indian citizens. Apart from limited locations, there are no requirements for Indian citizens. However, in order to enter Sikkim, foreigners must hold an Inner Line Permit (ILP).

An official travel document issued by the Indian government is called a “Inner Line Permit.” In addition to being a document, the ILP represents the Indian government’s efforts to control access to particular areas close to its international boundary.

In actuality, the British government was the one who first developed the ILP. In order to protect their business interests, it was done. However, the ILP is still being utilised in India to formally conserve tribal customs.

Additionally, there are various ILP types, one for visitors and the other for those planning lengthy stays. These are often for employment-related reasons.

For foreign nationals seeking the ILP, the Government of Sikkim has created a fairly straightforward procedure that, as stated on the Sikkim Government website, “is as simple as 123.”

Here is a detailed explanation of the entrance requirements.

COMMON PERMITS

Obtaining an ILP is essentially a formality and is free for foreign nationals. All you need to do is bring a photo that is the size of a passport and copies of your passport and visa. You can provide these documents and get the entrance at checkpoints.

Permits are issued at the entry checkpoints at Melli and Rangpo between the hours of 8 am and 7:30 pm.

Tourism for Sikkim at Bagdogra Airport: In this location, permits are issued from 10 am to 4 pm.

Sikkim House is open every day during business hours in Delhi or Kolkata. Bank holidays are when the home is closed.

The Sikkim Tourist Office in Siliguri is open during regular business hours. Bank holidays are when the home is closed.

Additionally, permits are accessible at the Pakyong Airport. In truth, entrance permits may also be obtained in Darjeeling, but the procedure there is more drawn-out and difficult. In Darjeeling, the procedure consists of two steps: first, provide the passport copy at the Foreigners’ Registration Office (FRO), and then cross the town to the District Commissioner’s Office (DCO).

Also available at the Indian Embassies overseas are 15-day Sikkim permits that foreign nationals can get.

Furthermore, there isn’t a checkpoint at Jorethang, thus no permits are given out and foreigners aren’t allowed to enter or exit West Bengal.

ENTRY PERMIT APPLICATION ONLINE

Any ILP’s validity is only good for 15 days. If a visitor from outside the country wants to prolong their stay, it can be done upon request, but only temporarily.

Only the State Government, however, has the authority to double the stay’s original 30-day duration. This permission renewal may be applied through the Gangtok Foreign Registration Office (FRO) as well as the North, West, and South District Superintendent of Police offices.

CANCELLATION

The Entry Permits may be revoked within two hours of any military activity or other security issues. This can occur with no warning and cannot be contested.

Additionally, in such a scenario, the Entry Permit fee paid will not be returned.

Foreigners must obtain Inner Line Permit (ILP) to visit Sikkim . This can be obtained from Sikkim Tourism Office at Delhi, Kolkata, Siliguri and Rangpo on the stretch of a valid Indian Visa. The 15 days duration permit is issued on the spot on production of photocopies of the passport and visa details along with two passport photos of the applicants. The permissible duration of the stay to the foreign tourists is 15 days initially.

The State Government is authorized to extend the same twice by a further period of 30 days (15 days each). The extension of the permit can be obtained from Foreigners Registration Office at Gangtok and Office of the Superintendent of Police in the North West and South District. For those interested in going for trekking in the interior region of the state the Department of Tourism issues Protected Area Permit (PAP) at Gangtok which is available for certain specified areas for groups consisting of two or more foreigners subject to the condition that the trekking programme is arranged through a registered travel agency. Transport in Sikkim is comprised of air, Rail and Road.

TRANSPORT AND COMMUNICATION

Sikkim has its own airport recently. Pakyong Airport has been recently operation and is the only airway present in Sikkim. Though there is very few flights available due to the weather condition here, but there is a chance that you may get a hold of it. The flight is usually connected from Guwahati or Kolkata. The nearest most operational airport for Sikkim is Bagdogra in North Bengal in the neighbor State of Sikkim, West Bengal. Bagdogra is around 123 kilometers from Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. It takes approximately four hours of drive from Bagdogra to Gangtok.

Sikkim Tourism also operates daily, a five seater helicopter service between Gangtok and Bagdogra. Recently the Helicopter fleet has been upgraded to have a 26 seater helicopter. MI 172 Chopper is a robust machine capable of hovering even in moderate climate , terrain up to 13000 to 14000 feet altitude. Russian made machine can lift up to 26 persons.

The two closest railway stations are Siliguri (114 Kms) and New Jalpaiguri (125 Kms) from the Capital of Sikkim, Gangtok. There are agency booking facilities in Gangtok at the Sikkim Nationalized Transport Bus Terminus, Gangtok. Another one is at the Tourist Information Centre Namchi, South Sikkim.

Siliguri Railway station is only 114 Kms away and New Jalpaiguri is 125 Kms away. New Jalpaiguri is the most preferred Railway station due to the maximum availability of trains through this station. Rarely anyone goes to the Siliguri station as it is mainly busy in Local trains. Local commuters usually use this station. Recently the massive railway project is going on to bring railways to Sikkim. That should take another 5 years to complete if not more. The new Railway Station then will be at and Around Rangpo. Once completed it will be around 30+ Kilometers from the State Capital.

The Sikkim Nationalized Transport (SNT) plies regular bus service from Gangtok to Siliguri and Kalimpong and within the state. Booking facilities are available at Siliguri and Gangtok. Private buses and taxis are also available at in plenty between Gangtok, Siliguri, Kalimpong and Darjeeling. You can also book a cab from a private Company. The Buses plying between Siliguri and Gangtok are the most suitable options to choose from. There are private 4 seater cabs and also the 10 seater maxi cabs available for hire.

The taxi can be shared by multiple travelers or it can also be booked solely by one single party or group. However the smaller taxis takes a little less time for the journey as compared to busses, but if we look at the comfort level then buses are the best while travelling in hills. There are luxury tourist vehicles also available but the cost for those are quite huge. Though they are pretty luxurious but the cost is tremendous as compared to it and the return of investment rarely satisfies.

Almost all modes of transportation are available to reach Sikkim. The state is well-connected by air, railways, and road. Despite being a hilly state, transportation of Sikkim is much convenient and frequent. By Air : The nearest airport is Bagdogra, WestBengal which is 124 Kms away from Gangtok. India’s national carrier, Indian Airlines includes almost all other domestic airlines such as Jet Airways, Air India, Go Air run regular flights from the major cities of India such as Delhi, Kolkata etc. Helicopter Service From Bagdogra, one can also avail the Helicopter service to reach Gangtok within 20 minutes only. However, the service completely depends on the weather conditions. Else, one can hire a taxi (Approximately 4 hours drive). By Train: New Jalpaiguri (NJP) & Siliguri are the two major railway stations Nearest to Sikkim. NJP is 125 Kms and Siliguri is 114 Kms from the capital city Gangtok and is well-connected to all the major cities such as Delhi and Kolkata. You can further board a bus or hire a private taxi, which will take you about 5-6 hours to reach Sikkim. By Road: Gangtok is well-connected by road to Darjeeling, Siliguri, Kalimpong, and also to other district headquarters within Sikkim. Regular bus service operated by (Sikkim Nationalized Transport (SNT) from Gangtok to all major cities and towns in North Bengal and state. Also, private taxies and jeeps are also available throughout the day at a very reasonable fare.

The geographical location of Sikkim with its altitudinal variation allows it to have tropical, temperate, and alpine climatic conditions within the area of 7,096 Kms. Temperature conditions differ from sub-tropical in the southern lower parts to cold deserts in the snowy north. Also, it is the most humid region in the whole range of Himalayas due to its proximity to the Bay of Bengal and direct exposure to Southern monsoon. The rains are subjected to monsoon time and are particularly plentiful from the month of May to early October. July is the wettest month in most of the places. The intensity of rainfall during South-West monsoon season depletes from South to North while the winter rainfall occurs in the opposite order. The highest annual rainfall may exceed 5000 mm. An average number of rainy days ranges from 100 at Thangu in north Sikkim to 184 at Gangtok in east Sikkim. Freezing cold is experienced at higher altitudes of 10,000 ft. plus. The temperature rarely rises above 15°C and heavy snowfall can be experienced during the winter months. Also, some time snowfall occurs during the months, April to mid-November.

Permits Information:

INDIAN NATIONALS: Indian Nationals do not require any kind of permit to visit unrestricted areas in Sikkim such as Gangtok, Rumtek, Yoksom, Phodong, Pemayangtse etc. However, in order to visit restricted areas which are under army control such as Changu and Yumthang, Indian Nationals are required to get an inner-line permit (ILP) from Sikkim Police at Gangtok. The travel agent can arrange the ILP for you within a few hours. Besides Changu and Yumthang, Indian Nationals are not allowed to go to other restricted areas in Sikkim. One can only visit the other restricted areas in Sikkim under special circumstances and permission is required to be sought either from the Home Department or Government of Sikkim. Although the Dzongu area of Sikkim does not come under the restricted areas, one needs to obtain a permit from the north district collectorate at Mangan to visit this place. FOREIGNERS Foreigners must obtain Inner Line Permit (ILP) to visit northern east state Sikkim for restricted areas as well as unrestricted areas. These can be achieved from all Indian Missions, Sikkim Tourism Offices at New Delhi, Kolkata, District Magistrates Office of Siliguri, Darjeeling, and Rangpo on the basis of an Indian Visa. The 30 days duration Permit is issued on the spot without any delay provided photocopies of the passport and visa along with two passport sized photos of the applicants are made available. Initially, the permissible duration of the stay for foreigners is 30 days. The State Government is authorized to extend this time period by a further 30 days. Moreover, the extension of the permit can be obtained from FRO at Gangtok and also from the office of Superintendent of Police of the North, West and South Districts. For those foreign tourists who are interested in going for trekking in the interior region of the state the Tourism and Civil Aviation issues Protected Area Permit (PAP) at Gangtok provided they are in a group of four or more. For further clarifications, they can also contact the information center. To visit wildlife sanctuaries, one needs to contact Chief Wild Life Warden, Forest Secretariat, Deorali, Gangtok.

Foreigners Entry Formalities:

In order to promote the tourism in Sikkim, restrictions on the entry of foreign tourists into restricted areas of Sikkim have been relaxed. They can now easily visit Gangtok, Rumtek, Phodong, Pemayangtse and the Yuksom -Zongri trekking route on the basis of restricted area permits which can be obtained from any one of the following offices:
