Asik-Asik Falls in Alamada, Cotabato

Enchanting. One of a kind. There is just too much to say about this place but you’d surely be lost for words upon seeing it with your own eyes. This is Asik-Asik Falls — just one of the many yet among the most remarkable waterfalls in the region. It is one of the tourists’ top favorite places to visit in SOCCSKSARGEN. It is characterized by a curtain of waterfalls that flows through the walls that are covered in lush green. Unlike any other waterfalls, Asik-asik does not have a wide and deep catch basin but it sprinkles down a rocky base with shallow waters only. Its name is derived from a Hiligaynon word “asik” which means sprinkle.

Other Places to Visit Near SOCCSKSARGEN

Our Muslim brothers and sisters in Mindanao are open about accepting visitors in their place of worship regardless of the religion. Our responsibility as non-Islam then is to respect it. Because of that, mosques have become among the top places to visit in SOCCSKSARGEN and its nearby region. While Grand Mosque is the only one located in SOX itself, there are two more from a nearby region that can be also visited. These are the White and Pink Mosque.

Masjid Al-Nasser Abpi (White Mosque), Maguindanao

Among the sought-after spots that backpackers in SOCCSKSARGEN would never miss out on is the White Mosque in Datu Odin Sinsuat in Maguindanao – a province in the neighboring region called BARMM or Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. This is relatively the newest of the three mosques that travelers would visit in SOCCSKSARGEN and BARMM.

There are no Muslim attires for rent in the temple so make sure that you at least pack or wear a modest outfit especially if you decide to visit White Mosque. They don’t collect entrance fees from visitors, too . The only thing they’d ask is respect by observing the rules in the mosque.

White Mosque, Cotabato City

Like Grand Mosque, Al-Nasser Abpi is situated in a far end of a corner where there’s no public transport available . Hence it is advisable to rent a tricycle or a habal habal to get to it and away hassle-free.

Masjid Dimaukom (Pink Mosque), Maguindanao del Sur

soccsksargen tourist spots list

Masjid Dimaukom, also known as the Pink Mosque is named after Samsudin Dimaukom, the mayor of Datu Saudi Ampatuan who also directed its construction. It is situated in the province of Maguindanao del Sur and was given to its people as a gift. The iconic color of the mosque represents love and peace and as per the hearsays, it was the former mayor’s wife’s favorite color, too. To honor the city's founding, a riot of color and music is being held throughout the city. The street dancing in Hinugyaw is unique in that it takes place in the late afternoon, just before sunset, to avoid the oppressive heat. Despite the fact that most of the participants are students, this initiative should be given the highest priority. Many people come out to watch the street dancing, which is one of the main attractions of the festival.

The volcano is considered an ecotourism spot wherein climbers are required to plant one seedling at a given area for every climb to the volcano. The word ‘Asik-Asik’ means ‘sprinkle, sprinkle’. Asik-Asik Falls is named that way because its falling water ‘sprinkles’ strongly against the rock formations. It’s a fairly new destination since continuous floods and forest fires have devastated the parts of the forest that goes through the falls. It’s located in the Alamada Region where heavy vegetation can be seen. They aren’t sure if the water sources are from springs in the mountains or underground river.

9 Top Places to Visit in Central Mindanao (SOCCSKSARGEN)

ALT="places to see in central mindanao"

WELCOME TO CENTRAL MINDANAO TRAVEL GUIDE! If you are planning to travel around Central Mindanao anytime soon, this travel guide is perfect for you. This travel guide highlights the best places to visit in Central Mindanao or SOCCSKSARGEN!

SOCCSKSARGEN – located in Mindanao is far by one of the cheapest tourist destinations in the Philippines that I have recently visited. There’s a cherry on top of SOCCSKSARGEN or The Central Mindanao ; it is totally cheap to travel here!

Affordable and Safe – are two words that travelers would love to hear about a place they’re visiting. If it is affordable to reach a certain tourist destination, who wouldn’t dare to check out the beauty of that place? Safety. This is one of the most important things that travelers consider when visiting a particular destination.

Table of Contents

The Central Mindanao (Region XII)

The Central Mindanao is an administrative region in the Philippines, designated as Region XII. This region is now more commonly known as SOCCSKSARGEN. SOCCSKSARGEN centers on its four provinces and one of its cities namely called South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, and General Santos City.

Surrounded by vast forests, high mountains, wonderful lakes, and majestic waterfalls, the region is surely one of the best places to visit in the country. An underrated region that deserves to get more recognition from local and foreign tourists.

Best Places to visit in SOCCSKSARGEN (Central Mindanao)

Listed down are the must-see attractions in the region. These are the best places that you should see when traveling around Central Mindanao.

Seven Waterfalls, South Cotabato

There is something so special about the province of South Cotabato – a wide range of rainforests, freshest tilapia from its lake, unique culture and traditions, and breathtaking, hidden waterfalls scattered in the wild.

Situated in Lake Sebu; a well-known town in South Cotabato boasts the natural wonders of the seven waterfalls that can only be seen in the province itself. Namely as Hikong Alo (Passage), Hikong Bente (Immeasurable), Hikong B’lebel (Zigzag or Coil), Hikong Lowig (Booth), Hikong Ukol (Wildflower), Hikong K-fo-i (Short), and Hikong Tonok (Soil).

The first 2 waterfalls – Hikong Alo and Hikong Bente, the only falls that are accessible to the public. Meanwhile, you can only see the other five waterfalls by ziplining. Get an adrenaline rush as you ride the 180-meter high zip line, known as the highest and longest zipline in Southeast Asia! This is a one-of-a-kind experience that shouldn’t be missed, isn’t it?

The view from above would definitely make you speechless! (That actually happened to me.)

The Grand Mosque, Cotabato

The Grand Mosque or also known as The Sultan Hassal Bolkiah Masjid is one of the mosques that you can visit in Cotabato. SOCCSKSARGEN: 10 Things to Do

SOCCSKSARGEN: 10 Things to Do

Region XII, commonly known as SOCCSKSARGEN (that’s South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani and General Santos City), might not yet be the most popular tourist destination, but there’s so much to do here.

With news of conflict in parts of Mindanao, it is understandable that tourists might decide to stay away; it’s the sad truth. However, as I’ve said before: “Mamasapano, Basilan, Sulu, or other places experiencing conflict do not equate to the whole of Mindanao.” (READ: 9 spectacular places to visit in Mindanao )

Here are a few things to do:

1. White Water River Tubing (Maitum,  Sarangani )

All photos provided by Melody Dino

If water rafting is done with a rubber boat to which can be ridden by 4-6 people, Maitum’s river tubing entails riding an old school salbabida  (flotation device) which is somewhat attached to another salbabida ridden by a rafting guide. I actually find it a clever and cheaper alternative to rubber boats. It’s like water rafting but way cooler! (READ:  Splash! Wild river ride in Cagayan de Oro )

2. Visit Pacman and Mommy D’s mansions (GenSan)

As this is the home of the famous boxing legend Manny Pacquiao, you might like to take a peek at where he stays, from the outside, at least. The Pacman ‘mansion’ looks simple on the outside but the compound has its own basketball court and a separate receiving hall.

Mommy D’s house is not far from Manny’s. It is situated in a simple subdivision. We would at least have liked to see her, but the guard told us that Mommy D had left earlier in the day.

We also dropped by Pacman’s Wild Card Gym. It is located on the 3rd floor of his building across SM GenSan.

3. Cool down at Veranza Mall (GenSan)

It was scorching hot outside when we decided to check this mall out. There are high end brands as well as a Gap outlet. In case, this is not your cup of tea, Veranza is just across the KCC mall where I hear many locals do their grocery shopping. (READ:  Perfect for summer: 8 cool-weather PH destinations )

4. Sunbathe at Gumasa Beach (Glan,  Sarangani )

With its white sand beach, this island offers a sense of solitude, away from the crowd.

We stayed for a couple of hours in Coco Beach Resort where a cottage rental costs for as low as P200 and entrance fee is P30/head. Just be reminded to throw away your trash in the proper bins. Help locals preserve the beauty and cleanliness of this place.

5. Taste the famous buko halo-halo (Koronadal)

Don’t miss out on tasting the famous Apareja’s buko (coconut) halo-halo! A slightly different take on the traditional merienda  (snack) that Filipinos love, this halo-halo is served in a fresh coconut topped with ube ice cream. Ensure that you also eat the coconut ‘meat’ to complete the experience.

It is also recommended on taking home some of their bukayo  (a sweet dessert made from coconuts) as a pasalubong . I tried it myself and it is delicious!

6. Zipline at 7 Waterfalls (Lake Sebu, South Cotabato)

Sulit  (worth it). For P250/head you can get to ride not one, but two ziplines.

Note that only falls one and two can be reached on foot and the remaining 5 waterfalls can be spotted when you ride the zipline. You won’t only get a glimpse of the view of the magnificent waterfalls, but you can also get to experience the awesome feeling of flying.

View from the top. One of the 7 waterfalls, been shot while riding a zipline

7. Relax at Lake Sebu (South Cotabato)

Try just quietly viewing the lake and you’ll feel yourself calm down. There’s something about Lake Sebu that make you feel relaxed. We stayed at Punta Isla, a ‘lakefront’ resort and the room they gave us was elevated, so we had a great view of the whole lake. (IN PHOTOS: 8 PH lakes to add to your travel bucket list )

Some of the resort accommodations offer fan rooms only as the cold breeze from the lake will often make up for the warm weather. Room for 4 people starts at P1,100. (READ:  Mornings made better at Lake Sebu )

8. Go diving! (Maasim,  Sarangani )

Now, this was our first time to dive…and we chose to do it in  Sarangani  Bay!

Well, it started out as a challenge, but the intro dive experience package in Lemlunay Resort was affordable (at P1,500/head for a 30-minute dive with diving gear).

We were amazed to see how rich the marine biodiversity of  Sarangani  Bay really was. It’s rightfully one of the best diving spots in the country.

9. Nature trip at  Sarangani  Highlands (GenSan)

Don’t let the name fool you. This resort is located in GenSan and not in  Sarangani . I heard that the owners are from  Sarangani  so they named it after their hometown. Boasting a beautiful landscape and well-maintained gardens, this can be a haven for selfie addicts. Walang pangit na angle (there’s no bad angle), I swear!

Highlands also has the most gorgeous view of  Sarangani  Bay and not to mention, the rooms are nice. Visit and see for yourself.

10. Food Trip! Indulging in the local cuisine will give you a different perspective on food. I wanted to taste the dishes in every destination. From balbakua of Gamay’s Eatery to the spicy dark chocolate of Kablon Farm, there are many dishes you shouldn’t miss.

Travel Tip: Nearest jump-off point is at General Santos. From there, other provinces are at least 1.5 hours away.

In addition, durian and pineapple are abundant in the region (when in season) so take advantage of that as well.

There you have it, all the reasons to put these locations on your travel bucket list. The best part is, you can get to visit 3 to 4 destinations all at once.  Travel MindaNOW na !  – Rappler.com

SOCCSKSARGEN Travel Guide

Soccsksargen overview.

General Santos City Airport General Santos City South Cotabato SOCCSKSARGEN Visit SOX | Turista Boy

SOX is known for several reasons, the first of which is that it is the home of the Tuna Capital of the Philippines – General Santos City . The region also is home to some natural wonders such as Mount Maitum , La Palmera Ridge , Daday Falls , Asik-Asik Falls , Lake Holon , and Lake Sebu among others.

As a personal observation, I have noticed that the region has good road networks and the transportation system is quite organized. The people, too, are very warm and always smiling when we greet them! The region’s landscape is also a sight to see because every corner of the SOCCSKSARGEN is worthy of the gram!

CENTRAL MINDANAO Region: travel guide

Mindanao’s stigma is evidently strong amongst the Luzon locals, an effect on decades of news about insurgents and unrests from traditional media. Whenever  I will be visiting Mindanao, there is this usual question, “Is it safe there?” . My answer, “It is, definitely.” I have been to many provinces and major cities in the promising island.

In this article, let me share the travel experiences, particularly in the region of SOCCSKARGEN. Growing up in the Central Luzon region, I only saw the region through my elementary textbooks and watching the news from television. But in today’s social media dominance, my understanding and knowledge of this region grew, that this place is teeming with tourist spots and lively festivals for visitors to experience their culture. Before sharing the experience, what is SOCCSKSARGEN? The numerical designation is Region XII and the acronym stands for SO for South Cotabato, C for Cotabato City, C for Cotabato (North) Province, SK for Sultan Kudarat, SAR for Sarangani and GEN for General Santos City.

View of Mt. Matutum.jpg

Last January 2019, Cotabato City exited the Region 12, and now became the capital of the Bangsamoro Regional Government. Administratively, it may have changed, but in the traveling community, Cotabato City will always be a possible part of the itinerary whenever visiting the Region 12 .

PORTS OF ENTRY:

General Santos Airport serves mainly the region, alternatively, Davao City and Cotabato City can be port of entry and exit.

Land Travel within the Region 12

  • The cities and municipalities are linked by public vans and public buses, and grand terminals are strategically located within the town centers. Usually, the public vans last trips are from 5:00PM – 6:00PM, special trips after these hours.
  • There are tricycles and motorcycles you can charter for intracity trips or transfers.
  • The Husky Bus Lines and Yellow Bus Lines, commonly, has hourly trips depending on routes.

Being able to visit all of its provinces, here are the list of places I have been:

  • Koronadal City
  • Matigol Falls, Arakan
  • Lake Agco, Kidapawan City

TO T’NALAK FESTIVAL OF SOUTH COTABATO

tnalak festival 2019

Our adventure in Region 12 started with a rainy take off from Manila and landed on a pristine sunny early morning in General Santos International Airport. We chartered a car to whisk us to City of Koronadal. (Travel tip: Whenever you are in the region, City of Koronadal is locally known as Marbel. Better ask directions within the region and use Marbel, instead of Koronadal.) We arrived with quite heavy traffic in its main corridors, as expected, as we are heading to the town center, Alunan Avenue to be particular to witness the T’nalak Festival. Only three remaining contingents are on the streets and we hurried are cameras to take snapshots.

Grand Entrance

The festive spirit is so evident, with the happy crowd busy taking photographs and selfies, free market stalls brimming on both sides of the Alunan Avenue and other major commercial area, playing the signature sound of the festival as their house music. After gobbling our late breakfast, we hurried to the Grandstand to witness the grand performance. I was lucky to obtain a media pass the same day, despite the stress with the crowd, I kept that genuine smile while coordinating with security staff, police officers and bomb squad on duty. Little did I expect, to have found myself with the media team right in front of the stage where the VIPs are.

Alunan Avenue during Tnalak Festival.jpg

Shortly the contest started. The performances are grouped into three: Christian theme, Ethnic Theme and Muslim Theme. Being under the late morning sun is quite stressful because of the heat and humidity, however, watching the performances at the frontest front with live music and the awesome synergy of the dancer’s energy and colorful props, overcame the stress. It was a sight to behold! Just before the last group ended their performance, I hurried to the exit to avoid the crowd’s exodus. It was a tiring a day and we capped the day at a local boutique hotel.

lake sebu travel guide south cotabato itinerary

Another tourism landmark of South Cotabato is  Lake Sebu . About more than an hour drive from Marbel proper, you will reach the high altitude town of Lake Sebu. This town houses one of the peaceful tribes, the T’boli . We are privileged to have billeted in School of Living Traditions , a learning institute and homestay owned by the renowned Maria Todi. Mam Maria Todi is one of the celebrated leaders of the T’boli as she actively teaches their culture, tradition and music to the young ones. At her homestay, we experienced small part of their daily lives, sleeping in common quarters, dining with their native dishes, and trying out their musical instruments. Note that it gets cold at night since of the high altitude.

lake-sebu-1

Lake Sebu offers a wide range of experiences – from zip lining above its roaring waterfalls park, marvelling their brassware techniques, paddling on Lake Sebu and Lake Seloton and learning on of their prized handicraft – the T’nalak cloth.

Here are the content creators from the region , and I am privileged to have met and interacted with them. It is inspiring to have learned more about the passion in digital media. They held the SOX Digicamp 101, a learning session that goals to impart proper tools for budding content creators in the region. Note that there are content creators from Luzon and Visayas too, who graced this learning session.

Where to chill in South Cotabato?

Refuge Café

Refuge Cafe Best Coffee Shop in Koronadal Marbel South Cotabato

Spend your chill hours while in Koronadal City at Refuge Café located at Abad Santos Street. Ms. Charmaine Ladot, the owner, made the menu simple and straightforward – perfecting each recipe they have.

Quality Pesto

Enjoy its ambiance, tasty pasta dishes, and heartwarming quality coffee and teas right at the heart of the city. Thank you Ms. Charmaine for hosting us during the T’nalak Festival in Koronadal, South Cotabato.

The menu is simple, yet the intensive process of improving each dish precedes before being included in the list. The cafe has two floors and both are instagrammable. Did you know that this very cafe also holds various photoshoots? Thanks to the creative and brillian mind of Ms. Charmaine. What I love is the cafe is  of its proximity with other establishments, hence, a strategic location to lounge at.

(NORTH) COTABATO PROVINCE

Lake Agco Kidapawan City North Cotabato Province travel blog (4)

From Tacurong, it will take almost two-hour drive to Kidapawan City. This city is one of the jump-off points to the summit of Mt. Apo. We planned to see  Lake Agco , a nature park located at the foothills of the highest mountain in Philippine Archipelago. Due to its relevant altitude, the climate is cooler and contrary to that, the steaming Lake Agco sets a scenic and dreamy scene from a typical spooky film, a forest drenched in foggy mist. Going to this very resort is already an experience.

Road to Lake Agco

We travelled on a winding mountain road and enjoyed panoramic views of the lower slopes and hills as we continue the uphill, wished we could stayed longer or stayed for a night.

Belching spot of the resort park

Lake Agco is also known for its believed health beneficial mud that tourists slather on their bodies, due to its natural sulphur and other mineral contents. There  are resorts and stores already existing in the park.

How to go : take bus/vans from General Santos/Koronadal/Davao to Kidapawan City. From there, you can charter motorcycle to bring you to the resort. It is recommended to travel earlier than 4:00PM since of its distance to the city proper of Kidapawan.

img_9353

Since of its mountaineous topography, the province boasts many towering waterfalls, one of them is the  Matigol Falls . For about less than 3 hours drive from Davao City via Bukidnon-Davao road, you will be at its jump off point. Thank you to my friend Sheena, she was able to squeeze me in a group going to the falls – with Sir Roland and Sir Jason. Since they already knew the locals, we are able to embark on an unexpected wet adventure.

Another tier of the Falls

The trail leading to the waterfall’s basin is a bit tricky during a downpour. Just less than an hour after we start our trek, the rain clouds above us formed, and as expected, we are trodding on a slippery muddy trail with few inches of sheer cliff on our right side – one missed step, and we could slip to our deaths. Thank God we survived and, actually, enjoyed the experience. The buko pie we brought all the way from the jump off point survived too, without being mushy or drenched because of the rain.

We arrived at the basin safe and with a stronger cascade. The multitier waterfalls came down with a monstrous roar and strong blasts of wind and mists. We rested and consumed our snacks. The uphill trek is another adventure. The foot trail is steeper, however, shorter. We reached different tiers of the waterfalls, and crisscrossed its cascade. There are ropes you can grasp, in case you would slip. We ended up at the topmost tier almost dark. As we reached back to the jump off point, our footwears collected much mud that made the trek arduous. We have to clear our soles otherwise endure another dangerous slip and fall onto deep ravines in the dark of the night.

We are happy and contented as we drove back, as this is another one-for-the-books experience.

How to go: Best to transit via Davao City, take bus bound to Bukidnon, ask driver to alight at the junction to Matigol Falls and travel time is about two hours. From there, you can charter a motorcycle to bring you to the jump off point.

Capitol Building Sultan Kudarat Travel Guide blog review (1)

The following day, our chartered car picked up us as schedule and we visited the  Baras Bird Sanctuary  in Tacurong City of Sultan Kudarat province. At the time of our visit, it is breeding season, and from afar, we can actually see white specks from the canopy, indicating the high population of the birds there.

Baras Bird Sanctuary Sultan Kudarat.JPG

We arrived and paid registration and found ourselves sauntering through the pathways. Surely, there are lot of migratory birds, the nice and smell of bird poop fills the air. Travel tip: to get close up shots, stay still as long possible and have your telephoto lens handy.

Capitol Facade Sultan Kudarat

The Capitol building of Sultan Kudarat  is a destination itself. Its iconic yellow gold dome signifies the Muslim culture influence in the province.

Full facade of the Capitol Building

We are lucky that we are given access to the prestigious Sultan Hall inside the capitol building. This is where VIPs are lounged during official visits. The interiors are adorned with golden details, another characteristic of Muslim inspired architecture.

Sultan Kudarata Capitol Kapampangan Traveller (1)

The Capitol Complex also houses various provincial offices within its fences. Also, it is beside the common terminal and visiting to this government complex is not daunting or tiring. We are blessed to have met staff and security personnel who are so accommodating that we got access to the elevator, different balcony and the rooftop. Also, they assisted us to the basement where we are able to purchase souvenirs and bring home treats.

Tuka Marine Beach Resort Sarangani Province Kiamba Travel blog guide review (6)

Kiamba is another western coastal town of Sarangani. We decided to spend our day in  Tuka Marine Beach Resort , located on one of its scenic coves. About less than 20 minutes of boat ride from Kiamba town, we docked on of the clearest waters I have seen. We never spoiled a minute as we immediately snatched our cameras and started documenting the beach. We stayed on an air-conditioned room with balcony.

waiting for Sunset with Ella, Ann, Qing

After which, we tried to ascend the trail leading to a view deck, however, was still on construction at the time of our visit. On our descent, we encountered a wild snake along the trail, we shooed it away to have my friends pass by safely. We marvelled at the sunset over the white sand beach of Tuka Marine and experienced one of the best views.

Jump from buoy

The morning after, we woke up early and others swam its clear waters briefly. Our boat arrives and fetches and left the beach, the other guests are already jumping their hearts out from the floating hut. This is just one of the plenty of experiences that Sarangani can offer to adventure-seekers.

kiamba sarangani kapampangan traveller

How to go: From General Santos City, take public utlity van bound to Kiamba. Once at Kiamba, take tricycle to bring you to the jump off point to the resort. You can contact the Tourism Office at +63 910 280 5600 to inquire or reserve your boat and accommodation. Boat travel time ranges from 15 minutes to half an hour depending on sea conditions.

Gensan Fish port

This amazing city caught my attention since I love Tuna Sashimi.  Thank you to Francis of Isko Wanders blog , a GenSan-based influencer, who help me access one of the city’s destinations and front row admittance during their main event – the Kalilangan Festival Street Dance competition.

Performer bearing a flag

On a sunny after, we witness different units sauntering their way to the main judging area donned on glittery and colourful costumes typical of a Mindanaoan descent. Upbeat live music follows each group making us too, dance as we document the exhilarating performances.

General Santos City Fish Port Sarangani Highlands (2).jpg

Best to start the day early off to its iconic industry – the fish port – that calls locals and tourists every early morning to witness auctioning of fresh Tuna and deep sea catch. Never did I saw this much of fish in my life – surrounded by boats-load of it, transported via precisely-designed rails, allowing large containers of fish to slid down back to land.

Tuna for sale!

Also, being surrounded by large tunas of various sizes being wheelbarrowed from different directions was another preliminary experience. I wish I could have another round of break Tuna Sashimi.

How to go: From General Santos City, you can charter a tricycle to bring you to the port. You are expected to log in and change footwear to their prescribed socks and boots.

I met another friend, Sir Chill, whom he toured us around the city, helped us purchase bring home treats in the market and dined with us – he let us try the SuToKil in one of the food parks in General Santos City.

Totally Worth it

Sarangani Highlands Garden and Restaurant is an uphill property that boasts commanding view of the vast Sarangani Bay and nearby rolling hills and mountainscapes. This is located few minutes drive from the General Santos Fish port.

basic table set up

It is best to have your breakfast after your early morning tour from the  pier . We spent few hours enjoying its different pocket gardens and of course,  a good dose of quality caffeine – coffee!

How to go : from General Santos City, take vans/bus bound to Kiamba, ask driver to alight you at the junction to Sarangani Highlands. There are motorcycles you can charter to bring you up to there. Alternatively, for adventurers, you can hike your way up, saves you cash.

COTABATO CITY

Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque.jpg

The city’s boundaries are within Maguindanao’s province of BARMM, however, still administratively with Region XII. The city is served by Awang Airport, which located few minutes’ drive from city center. The famed Grand Mosque in the city is one of the picturesque architectural beauty to marvel.

grandmosque cotabato city kapampangan traveller.jpg

It is named as  Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque , funded by the Sultan of Brunei for the Muslim community of the city. The structure stands visibly over the plains of Cotabato City, with its four towering minarets and many domes that create a synergetic elegance. Should you be setting foot within its premises, one must follow the rules and culture of Islam. Women should wear hijab and abaya-like dress covering the feet. Men should wear long pants and sleeved top.

Cotabato City Hall and Standee.jpg

The City Hall also is a another destination. Its unique architecture is evident of its Muslim heritage. Inside the tourism office, there is a mini museum display showing its colorful heritage and culture. The tourism office staff are accommodating and will assist you in your needs in visiting their beloved city.

Never leave the city without going to its barter, where you can find malongs and sarongs at a very low cost.

Guidelines in visiting the Grand Mosque

I am guilty of this fear. That’s why I haven’t been there yet. But I have relatives in Cotabato. And I am in awe of the places in Cagayan and Surigao aswell as the colorful and rich culture of Mindanao. Someday, I will go to that part of the Philippines.

Blessed you are you have relatives in Cotabato, somewhere you can go home at 😊

super informative! when covid-19 is over, my plan is to visit mindanao and see it’s under visited locations and beaches!

Me too, looking forward for more airline seatsales to boost tourism

You have a wonderful opportunity to visit there! If I would be there, I think my favorite would be the Lake Agco, it reminds me of many books I have read! Also, the festivities, wow, I’d love to witness that because it exposes more rich culture of our country.

Would love to be back in Lake Agco and experience the overnight stay there.

I taught about the regions of Mindanao in my Civics 4 class and I wish I come across this post earlier for much ‘in-touch’ infos. The the Kalilangan Festival Street Dance competition looks so fun and my gosh, Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque looks magnificent. Pinning this post for future travel reference for sure!

I think growing up i didn’t fear traveling to Mindanao, partly because both my parents were born and raised there. Although i’m born and raised in Manila, I’m proud of my roots in Mindanao (Dipolog and CDO). I havent been to this region though – i plan to travel to more parts of the Philippines so this guide will come in handy. ❤️ Minsan nakakalito na meron ibat ibang parts ng Cotobato – south, north and yung mismong Cotobato hahaha! Also Thanks for sharing a sample itinerary! 😊

I’ve never been to Mindanao and I seriously want to go! I feel like it’s so underrated. Thank you for the virtual tour 🙂

Wow, another comprehensive blog! Haven’t been to any part of Central Mindanao, thank you for taking me there without me having to spend a cent. You certainly made me want to go there specially the fishport and the Sarangani Highlands Garden and restaurant! 🙂

When someone hear says ‘Mindanao’ especially tourists they always think an magulo, puro patayan but from this post I saw how beautiful Mindanao is. It’s such a paradise an never pa nadiscover. I like the view of Lake Sebu and and ganda ng Facade of the Grand Mosqie parang wala ka as Pinas.

Andami pa lang magagandang place sa Mindanao… sana all makapaglakbay katulad mo! Hehehe… YUng Matigol Falls ang parang bet ko puntahan kung magkakaroon ako ng pagkakataon.

Dami talaga magandang puntahan sa Mindanao contrart sa stereotype na nabuo because of some groups. If given a chance, I’d liek to visit these places, lalo na yung falls! And napakanteresting ng culture nila.

I think the best time to visit a place is during their festivals. You get a chance to experience more of their culture and watch great performances. I love your colorful pictures! If there’s one thing I learned from reading your blogs, it’s spending at least a week to explore the entire region. I like that you’re into nature trips!

Growing up, when I think of Mindanao, I thought magulo sa buong Mindanao. Thank you for writing this, you helped me see Mindanao in a new light. 🙂

We should not let stigma hinder us to travel and connect with the people. Mindanao is a beautiful place, and we are planning to explore it when we came back to the Philippines.

I have been to general santos but only for work where I conducted a seminar. This is very informative! Will consider these places when we get the chance to visit. Would love to experience this! Looks like you had fun. Let us know if you will be coming back. Hope we can come!

Ang galing! Such comprehensive type of travel blog and ang galing mo for being able to go there. Ive only been to davao and it was 8 years ago when i was 1 month pregnant to my son. I wanted then to explore more of mindanao but my son came haha!hope to get to visit again next time

So many places to visit over there and I have it all here for easy reference. I personalky haven’t been a part of a piesta yet and i just find that sad now. Huhu. I so wanna exeprience the culture and be with the people, especially there jn mindanao!

It’s my first time to read a travel blog that is very specific and informative. I love the pictures as well. This is, no doubt, one of the best. I am very obsessed with our country’s culture and stories. Cannot wait to visit those places soon!

Browsing through wordpress reader I stumbled here in your blog. I am from Mindanao but what a shame! I’ve never been into the places in Mindanao you visited. I know there are a lot to see in Mindanao but to see all these in your post here, OMG, nahihiya ako sa sarili ko. Sana man lang nakita ko ang Grand Mosque. ANg ganda pala….

Good thing you can visit the places anytime, you have the geographic proximity advantage. I wish I could land on a job situated in Mindanao.

Culture and Nature Tours that Show the Best of SOCCSKSARGEN

Itching for a new adventure? Why not opt for the road less traveled, and give SOCCSKSARGEN a try.

Region 12, or SOCCSKSARGEN (SOX, colloquially), consists of four provinces: South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Sarangani, and the Highly Urbanized City of General Santos. The region is filled with natural wonders like Lake Sebu, the Pangi River, and the Bakngeb River Cave.

SOX is also a place with rich cultural heritage; it is home to the T’boli Tribe, known for their T’nalak cloth that are made of woven abaca fibers. And there’s also the thousands-year-old burial jars in Maitum, as well as the old heritage buildings in Sarangani.

Apart from the cultural destinations, there are also plenty of nature spots worthy of visiting in SOX. There are beaches in Sarangani and also bird sanctuaries, Pawikan nesting sites, and Mangrove forests.

Here’s a rundown of the most well-known tour destinations in the region:

Lake Sebu Tours – Budget: Less than Php1,000

soccsksargen tourist spots list

This natural lake shares its name with the town it’s in. A valuable watershed, it provides important irrigation to the provinces of Sultan Kudarat and South Cotabato.

The Lake Sebu Tour takes one to two days to complete, depending on the pace of the group and the chosen stops. Popular tour destinations include the Seven Falls Zipline , the highest zipline in Southeast Asia, where guests zipline through two stations, all while getting a view of the four out of seven cascading waterfalls beneath.

Nearby, there’s some DOT Accredited Resorts, which offer boat cruise around Lake Sebu. The Lake Sebu Tour also includes a stop at the Lang Dulay T’nalak Weaving Center, which gives guests a chance to appreciate a centuries-old tradition. Called T’nalak Dreamweaving, it is a form of dyed abaca lacework mastered by T’boli Dreamweavers such as the late Lang Dulay.

For more information, visit the LGU Lake Sebu facebook page .

Lake Holon Tours – two to three days. Budget: Php1,500 to 2,000 per head

soccsksargen tourist spots list

This circuit tour focuses on the Great Lake Holon, which is found in Tboli, South Cotabato. Holon is a crater lake, and is noted for its beautiful, clear, turquoise water. The tour consists of a trek through Mount Melibengoy. This goes all the way down to the crater lake itself.

The hike employs native Tboli guides, and would take tourists through a choice of two trails, Sitio Kule or Salacafe.

Sitio Kule is a more advanced trail, and takes three to five hours to complete. Salacafe, on the other hand, is easier, and would take about three hours. Both trails provide travelers with views of farmlands, clear bodies of water, and fresh mountain air.

After the trek down, tourists can then camp by the lakeside of Holon, which offers a wide view of the night sky.

Apart from the Lake Holon tour, the circuit offers packages to various nearby farms and parks. There’s the Tupi Fruit Park with its fresh fruits, vegetable produce, and panoramic views of Mt. Matutum and the Bakngeb River Cave tour.

For more information, call the Tboli Tourism Office at  083 237 1205.

River Tubing Tours – one to two days. Budget: Php200 for the 30-minute River tubing in Pangi River

soccsksargen tourist spots list

The River Tubing tour offers a ride over the Pangi River in New La Union, Maitum, Sarangani Province.

The tour highlight is the white water tubing, which is similar to river rafting. It differs only with its tube-like raft as compared to a traditional raft’s oblong shape. The adventure brings tourists a 1.6 kilometer river ride filled with rapids, twists and turns, and great splashes of water.

While you will definitely get wet, and perhaps swallow some water, the ride is relatively safe. After the river ride, tourists can then learn about the country’s ancient history with an exploration of the Anthropomorphic Jars found in Maitum, Sarangani.

The jars were used for burial ceremonies by the indigenous tribes in the area and were dated way back to the Iron Age about 5 BC. to 225 A.D. Replicas of the burial jars bearing effigies of a deceased person’s head are on display at the Maitum exhibition in the town’s municipal building. The original pieces are on display at the National Museum in Manila.

For more information, call the Sarangani Tourism Office at (083) 508-5253, or Email [email protected].

Sarangani Beach Tours – Day Tour – Budget: Php1,500 to 2,000

soccsksargen tourist spots list

This tour offers travelers an alternative to Boracay or Bohol—Glan, Sarangani. To reach the town, travelers take an hour and a half flight from Manila going to General Santos City, followed by a land trip to Sarangani.

According to locals and tourists alike, the beaches and clear waters of Glan can rival the sands and waves of the most sought after beach destinations in the country. The most popular one is Gumasa Beach, which features a coastline made up of powdery white sand beaches and lined with coconut trees.

In nearby Kapatan, there is the Lago Dive Spot. It is beside an aquaculture farm for the unique sergeant fish, with its neon-like, bright blue and yellow colors.

Glan also has a black-sand beach. The sparkly quality of the sand is due to the silica rich content of the sand in the coastline. There’s also a Heritage Tour in the town of Glan; the old town center is filled with ancestral houses mixed with commercial buildings that go back centuries.

For more information, call the Sarangani Tourism Office at (083) 508-5253.

Mt. Apo Food and Climb Tours – three day, 2 nights, budget Php2,000

soccsksargen tourist spots list

Mt. Apo is the highest peak in the Philippines, with an elevation of 2,954 meters, or 9,692 feet. It is known as one of the best ecotourism destinations in the country. Kidapawan’s Mandangan trail and Magpet’s Bongolanon trail include forest views and an enduring adventure-hike experience to the mountain’s peak.

Mt. Apo is one of the most popular climbing destinations in the country, with its massive boulders, technical terrains, and sulfur craters. The mountain is also home to the endangered Philippine Monkey-eating Eagle, as well as other endemic species like the Scops Owl, Philippine Brown Deer, and the Mindanao Lorikeet.

Bukidnon: The Highland Paradise at the Heart of Mindanao

SoCCSKSarGen (Region XII Profile)

SoCCSKSarGen is a region of the Philippines, located in central Mindanao, and is officially designated as Region XII. The name is an acronym that stands for the region's four provinces and one of its cities: South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani and General Santos City. The regional center is Koronadal City located in the province of South Cotabato. Cotabato City itself is part of SOCCSKSARGEN, but Maguindanao is part of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

SoCCSKSarGen (Region XII Profile)

Tourist spots include Mt. Apo, Lake Sebu, cultural villages, old Mosques and shrines, hot springs and lakes. There are four feeder airports found in Lebak, Kalamansig, Tacurong City, all in Sultan Kudarat and Surallah, South Cotabato; one national airport which is found in Cotabato City and one international airport in General Santos.

Adventurous travelers probably wish to conquer vast mountain wilderness or explore the many forests, caves and wildlife reserves. The region's many hectares of rubber, palm, citrus, pineapple, and lanzones farms are filled with nature's freshest harvests.

The artistry of the different ethnic tribes lends richness to local colors. Each tribe has one art in common, the weaving of versatile tubular cloth called malong and other hand-woven products, found among the Maguindanaons and T'bolis. Visitors will find unique souvenir items among their many handicraft, brassware, beadwork, t'nalak cloth and hand- woven products. Tribal festivals, tours and visits to ethnic villages provide insight into the everyday lives of these cultural minorities.

The region has extensive coastlines, valleys and mountain ranges. Known for its river system, the region is the catch basin of Mindanao. The system is a rich source of food, potable water and energy production. Cotabato contains the Rio Grande de Mindanao, which is the longest river in Mindanao and the second longest in the Philippines.

Region XII was previously called Central Mindanao and originally included the provinces of Lanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Maguindanao. The creation of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao in 1990 left Central Mindanao with only Lanao del Norte, Sultan Kudarat, and Cotabato. Then, on September 19, 2001, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's Executive Order No. 36 reorganized the regions and provinces in Mindanao. This moved changed Region XII into the present SOCCSKSARGEN.

A pair of agungs is one of the instruments found in the kulintang ensemble, and Region XII is home to a fascinating culture that revolves around kulintang music, a specific type of gong music found among both Muslim groups (such as the Maguindanao) and non-Muslim groups (such as the Tiruray) of the Southern Philippines. Kulintang music functions as a main community unifier, where all of the community can come to engage in events such as weddings, birthday celebrations and festivals, to dignitary engagements and pilgrimages to and from Mecca. At home, such music unifies and solidifies family ties as family members take to playing after dinner. Kulintang music also plays a vital role as the accompaniment to healing dances, as long-distance communication between members (They have the ability to use the gandingan, also known as the talking gongs, to communicate from far away before the invention of the telephone), and a social conduit for young people (interaction between opposite sexes were not allowed except though such instruments).

Kulintang ensembles among those of the Southern Philippines are usually composed of five pieces of instrumentation. Among the Maguindanao, this would include: the kulintang (strung out horizontally on a stand, serving as the main melody instrument of the ensemble), the agung (the largest gongs of the ensemble providing much of the lower beats, either coming in a pair of two or just one alone), the gandingan (four large vertical gongs aligned front to back, used as a secondary melodic instrument), the dabakan (an hour-glass shaped drum covered in goat/lizard skin) and the babendil (a singular gong used as the timekeeper of the entire ensemble).

Brief History

The most significant development in the political history of Mindanao was the organization of six politico-military districts in Mindanao in 1860. The central district embracing Cotabato included Polloc, Illana Bay as far as the Western coast of Zamboanga at point Murcielagos and the Southern extremity of Mindanao down to point Glan. The capital of the government was Cotabato City until 1872 when the city was destroyed by a strong earthquake, after which the capital was Zamboanga City.

The Central Mindanao region was created on July 7, 1975 under Presidential Decree No. 742. Under this decree, Central Mindanao was composed of the provinces of Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Lanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur and Maguindanao and the cities of Iligan, Cotabato and Marawi. The extent of regionalization was further seen in the establishment of Autonomous Region and Western Mindanaao (Regions XII and IX) by virtue of Presidential Decree No. 1618.

On August 1, 1989, Republic Act 6734 was signed into law, which provided for the creation of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM). The former Regional Autonomous Government of Central Mindanao has therefore been reverted to an administrative region in 1990. Executive Order 429 was also issued on 12 October 1990, which provided for the reorganization of administrative regions in Mindanao and, in the case of Region XII, mandated the transfer of regional offices from Cotabato City to Koronadal City.

On February 23, 1995, Republic Act 7901 'An act Creating Region XIII to be known as the Caraga Administrative Region, and for other Purpose' was enacted. Section 3 of the said law provided for the transfer of Sultan Kudarat to Region XI following Surigao del Sur's transfer from Region XI to the Caraga Region.

Pursuant to the provisions of the Final Peace Agreement signed between the Government of the Philippines and the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) on September 6, 1996, Executive Order No.371 was issued by his Excellency Fidel V. Ramos on October 2, 1996. EO 371 established a Special Zone and Development (SZOPAD) in the southern Philippines, which encompassed five regions , including Region XII.

At the local scene, the municipality of Kidapawan became a city with the enactment of Republic Act 8500 on March 21, 1998. In the same year, the Province of Sultan Kudarat was reverted to Region XII by virtue of Republic Act 8744, An Act Repealing Section 3 of RA 7901 and to Return the Province of Sultan Kudarat to Region XII and other Purposes, which lapsed into law on December 18, pursuant to Article VI, Section 27 (1) of the constitution.

In the year 2000, the status of the two local government units where elevated. The municipality of Koronadal became a city on August 16, 2000 through Republic Act No. 8803. On the other hand, the municipality of Tacurong in the Sultan Kudarat became a city on September 18, 2000 by virtue of Republic Act o. 8805.

On August 14, 2001, a plebiscite was conducted in the ZSOPAD to determine the areas that shall comprise the ARMM, pursuant to RA 9054. The cities of Marawi in Region XII and Isabela in Region IX joined the ARMM. As a result administrative measure following the reconfiguration of ARMM, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo issued Executive Order No. 36, dated September 19, 2001, which realigned the regions in Mindanao. The province of Lanao del Norte and Iligan City of Region XII were transferred to Region X. The provinces of South Cotabato, Saranggani, and the cities of Koronadal and General Santos of Region XI became part of Region XII. Thus, per EO No. 36, Region XII is now composed of the provinces of Sultan Kudarat, Saranggani, South Cotabato and Cotabato Province and the cities of General Santos, Cotabato, Kidapawan, Koronadal, and Tacurong.

The Region has a total land area of 20,566.26 sq. km, 20 percent of the total Mindanao land area of 101,587 sq. km. Along the coasts are lowland areas covered with mangroves and beaches. A chain of inactive volcanoes and low hills occupy the interior. The region belongs to the fourth climatic pattern which is characterized by having an event distribution of rainfall throughout the year. It is seldom visited by typhoons.

Florida is boring?!

The Sunshine State is home to Disney World and Universal Studios and has hundreds of miles of beaches. We have the oldest city in the U.S. in our backyard and some of the richest people in the world .

To keep life interesting, we even have sharks and alligators .

Apparently, that's not enough.

According to a study by Solitaired , Florida is the fifth most boring state in the United States , based on an analysis of 66.7 million Google reviews of 3,290 popular tourist attractions around the world. The analysis was made to determine what locations were the least interesting.

In March 2024, Solitaired "analyzed 66.7 million Google reviews of 3,290 popular tourist attractions worldwide , spanning 384 cities across 71 countries.

"We focused our analysis on keyword mentions indicative of a bored tourist. Those keywords were "boring," "bored," "bore," "boredom," "tiresome," "dull," "drab," "lackluster," "lifeless," "mediocre," and "tedious.

"We ranked the attractions by the frequency with which tourists mentioned boredom-related keywords, comparing the mentions to the total reviews for each spot."

These North Carolina brunch spots rank among nation’s best. Why customers crave them

Two North Carolina restaurants serve classic brunch dishes — and customers can’t stop craving them.

So much so, the restaurants made it onto a list of the “Top 100 Brunch Spots in 2024.”

Young Cardinal Cafe & Co. in Winston-Salem ranks No. 64 and The Sage Mule in Greensboro is No. 72 on the nationwide list from the review website Yelp, according to results published Monday, April 29.

To create the rankings, Yelp said it studied U.S. restaurants that garnered several reviews related to brunch and Mother’s Day. It then “ranked those spots using a number of factors including the total volume and ratings of reviews mentioning those keywords in the past three years.”

Why are the NC restaurants fan favorites?

Of the two North Carolina restaurants on the list, Young Cardinal Cafe in downtown Winston-Salem ranked the highest. The breakfast and lunch restaurant said its “menu is back to the basics with modern twists and fresh ingredients.”

On Yelp, several people raved about the food , including the fan-favorite hot honey chicken served on salads, sandwiches and in an eggs Benedict dish. Customers also enjoy the restaurant’s service and outdoor seating area.

In Greensboro , The Sage Mule also earned a spot on Yelp’s brunch list. On its website, the restaurant said its food is “unassuming, yet always made from scratch with the highest quality ingredients.”

Some Yelp users were fans of the sauce-covered chicken and waffles at The Sage Mule, which is open for breakfast, lunch and a weekend brunch. Though the restaurant’s waitlist can last hours, fans said it’s worth sticking around.

The two North Carolina restaurants earned more than four out of five stars on Yelp. Across the country, the No. 1 restaurant was Toasted Gastrobrunch in Las Vegas.

The results were released ahead of Mother’s Day, which falls on May 12. Yelp warns the holiday is one of the year’s busiest times for restaurants, so make your plans in advance.

“In 2023, reservations for Mother’s Day jumped 79% from the Sunday before the holiday,” the website wrote.

Hurtigruten Expeditions, a Norwegian company, operates its own series of sailings all along the coastline.
