Hannibal is a lovely Mississippi River city in northeast Missouri, best known as the home of the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum, which preserves the childhood home of the famed 19th-century American author. Visitors can explore the site as part of self-guided tours and view its seven preserved buildings, which also include sites immortalized in the author's novels. The Mark Twain Cave Complex also preserves landmark caves that are featured in Mark Twain novels. Visitors can explore the exhibits of the Hannibal History Museum, take hourlong narrated city tours aboard the Hannibal Trolley, or enjoy beautiful scenic dinner cruises on the Mississippi River aboard the historic Mark Twain Riverboat. Jefferson City

Jefferson City is Missouri's lovely state capital, serving as the county seat of Cole County. The city takes its name from Third United States President Thomas Jefferson, home to a plethora of government-related attractions, including the National Register of Historic Places-listed State Capitol Building, which can be toured as part of regular guided tours. The Missouri Governor's Mansion has been the residence of every state governor for decades, while the Missouri State Penitentiary preserves an historic state prison facility. The preserved buildings of the Jefferson Landing State Historic Site can also be explored as part of self-guided tours, including the 1839 Lohman Building, the 1855 Union Hotel, and the historic Christopher Maus House.

Kimmswick is a charming suburb of St. Louis, known as a great budget getaway in the Missouri area. The suburb, which is located just half an hour south of the city's center, is home to dozens of unique shops, boutiques, and galleries throughout its downtown district, which is also home to lovely historic bed and breakfasts for overnight stay. The historic Anheuser estate, constructed in 1867, preserves the homestead of the Anheuser family of Anheuser-Busch brewing fame as a living history museum. The Burgess-How House and Museum preserves an historic 1850s farmhouse log building, while the El Camino Real Market traces to the city's 18th-century Spanish exploring heritage. Each October, the city hosts the Apple Butter Festival, showcasing delicious food options and apple butter cooking demonstrations.

Parkville is a lovely city in Platte County, known for its historic downtown district, which is full of unique antique shops and art galleries. The town was originally settled in 1838, though its roots go all the way back to the famed Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804-1806. Today, it is best known as the home of Park University, which was founded in 1875 and showcases several buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, along with a 385,000-square-foot underground section constructed by a local mining company. Historic sites include the English Landing at Platte Landing Park, which features sites connected to the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Visitors can also enjoy family-friendly miniature golfing experiences at Parkville Mini Golf or explore the city's extensive park system, which includes the expansive Parkville Nature Sanctuary natural area and the Sullivan Nature Sanctuary.

Phillipsburg

Phillipsburg is a lovely village known for its connection to the historic Route 66, considered to be the "Mother Road" in the United States throughout the 20th century. The quaint village is known for historic businesses like its 1880s-era Old Phillipsburg General Store, originally founded by Baltimore transplant Thomas Wildey, which once served as a lodge hall for the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Redmon's Candy, which claims to be the "world's largest gift store," is known for its delicious homemade fudges and chocolates. Other delightful Route 66-associated attractions include Carter and Lawson's Underpass Cafe and Service State and the remains of the Route 66 Roadside Park attraction.

St. Charles

St. Charles is a quaint historic community in St. Charles County, located just half an hour west of St. Louis' downtown district. The colonial-era town was originally founded in 1769, making it one of the state's oldest communities today. Throughout the 19th century, the town temporarily served as Missouri's state capital. Today, it is known for its charming historic South Main Street district, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which is home to more than 100 unique shops, boutiques, cafes, and restaurants. The city's Frenchtown district is also home to 58 designated historic buildings constructed in the French Colonial and German architectural styles. Annual special events hosted throughout the year include the Fete de Glace ice carving festival, the August Festival of the Little Hills, one of the nation's top 10 crafting fairs, and the Christmas Traditions Festival, one of the largest holiday festivals in the United States.

4 Day Family Trip Itinerary: What to Do in the Missouri Ozarks During Spring Break

The Missouri Ozarks offer plenty of things to see and do, giving your family something fresh and fun to do over spring break. Check out our favorite four-day family trip itinerary for Southwest Missouri.

Day 1: Springfield | Day 2: Branson | Day 3: Table Rock Lake | Day 4: Roaring River Park

In most school districts, students get to look forward to a week out of class in the spring. While college kids flock to the beaches, families tend to opt for something a little more wholesome and adventurous.

Here's an easy, action-packed 4-day trip itinerary for families in the Missouri Ozarks.

Day One: Springfield, Missouri

Springfield, Missouri, is known as the birthplace of Route 66 and the site of the first real Wild West gunfight. It's a smaller midwestern city with a population of around 170k residents. Today, Springfield is a college town with just the right mix of art, food, and outdoor fun.

Here's what we recommend:

Breakfast: Start the day off right with crepes and avocado toast at the local French eatery, The Aviary Cafe . You'll enjoy a feast of locally sourced ingredients from this locally-owned food joint. They open at 8 am and serve delectable bloody mary's.

Morning: Head straight over to the Bass Pro Shops HQ located in Springfield, Missouri for a one-of-a-kind shopping experience. The store features several museum exhibits and offers free entry to daily demonstrations. We've actually spent an entire day here before, but depending on your appetite for the outdoors or shopping, you might get through it more quickly.

Lunch: Enjoy the convenience of great food onsite at Hemingway's Blue Water Cafe located inside the Bass Pro Shops HQ. You can get everything from mahi mahi and shrimp tacos to bison burgers and a hearty bowl of New England clam chowder at Hemingway's. The restaurant is named for literary icon Ernest Hemingway and his insatiable stories of adventure, which you will later see depicted in the Wonders of Wildlife.

Afternoon: Take your time exploring the Wonders of Wildlife museum and aquarium. Again, this is also easily an entire day, but we tend to see the sights in a solid four to five-hour block with a mixed-age group.

Dinner: Go full American with Black Sheep Burgers & Shakes . This local eatery has multiple downtown locations in Springfield and is k nown for its creative and delicious gourmet burgers and decadent milkshakes. It's a casual spot great for families and anyone looking to enjoy a fun, laid-back meal.

Day Two: Branson, Missouri

Branson, Missouri, is 45 miles south of Springfield and takes a little under an hour to make the drive. If you're visiting mid-to-late March or any time in April, you're on the opening end of tourism season and may find that hours, services, and options are a little more limited than what you might find in the summer months.

But, trust us...there is still PLENTY OF FUN to be found!

In Branson, you have two real options for Spring break...(and it would be totally appropriate to add a bonus day to your trip so that you didn't have to choose between the two). Option 1 - Silver Dollar City (all day) or Option 2 - Best of Branson in the Off-season.

Alt 1: Silver Dollar City

This fan-favorite theme park opens for the season on March 9th, 2024. You will want to check the park calendar and weather before committing to SDC for your spring break family trip. Check out our complete guide to Silver Dollar City.

Breakfast: Start the day off right with cinnamon rolls at Eva & Delilah's Bakery, located just inside the entrance to Silver Dollar City. As an alternative, the park also offers Clarabelle's Cinnamon Bread a little further in, and several locations serve Starbucks coffee.

Morning: Get all Your Rides In at Silver Dollar City. We like to head straight for the rides before there is much of a chance for long lines or closed rides. We've always been with kids under 6, so The Grand Exposition has been our family's favorite. But there are plenty of fast-paced rides for older thrill-seekers as well.

Lunch: Feast in the park. There are more than a few options for dining, but when it comes to lunch, our favorites are the Lumbercamp (skillets and burgers) and the smokehouse (bbq). We tend to find that Miss Molly's is pretty heavy for a middle-of-the-day theme park lunch.

Afternoon: Shopping and demonstrations galore. As the park fills up and the ride lines get longer, shift your strategy to shopping and demonstrations to beat the headache. You can still hop on the occasional ride, like the SDC train, but you don't have to spend your day waiting in long lines.

Dinner: Fill your belly at Molly's Mill Restaurant. Silver Dollar City offers a full-service country cooking restaurant onsite. Stop here for all your favorites like fried chicken, meatloaf, and macaroni and cheese.

Alt 2: Best of Branson in the Off-Season

March and April are still early in the year and technically part of the off-season. If you've never been to Branson during the Spring, you might be surprised to learn that it's a lot less busy.

Breakfast: Get your grub on at Billy Gail's Cafe in Branson. This local eatery is known for its home-style cooking and generous portions. The pancakes are famous for being larger than the plate! It's a charming, rustic spot with a friendly atmosphere, but be prepared for a wait during peak times as it's quite popular.

Morning: Get up close with animals at Promised Land Zoo when the animals will be the most active, and then visit the Butterfly Palace. We loved how interactive the animal encounters were at the Promised Land Zoo, we even got to hold a baby kangaroo. The Butterfly Palace is also a unique attraction featuring more than 1,000 different fluttering species.

Lunch: Eat salads and burgers at the Black Oak Grill located in the Branson Landing . This restaurant was easily one of our favorites in Branson. Everyone at the table had something different and every bite was amazing.

Afternoon: See the sights at the Branson Scenic Railway and tour history at the Titanic Museum. Take a round-trip ride through the beautiful Ozark foothills and tunnels in vintage passenger cars. It's a relaxing way to see the scenic landscapes around Branson.

Dinner: Enjoy dinner and a show at Dolly Parton's Stampede. Finish things off right with a great dinner and big show, Dolly style. Seriously, do not leave Branson without checking this one out! It was such a fun experience! Our family left the show fully satisfied. the staff was impeccable and the show was top-notch.

Day Three: Table Rock Lake

Just outside of the city of Branson, Missouri, you'll find access to Table Rock Lake . Where you go and what you do will impact your commute times, but everything should be accessible within an hour's drive.

Breakfast: If you haven't gotten your fill of good, old-fashioned cinnamon rolls, try Grandma Ruth's. For those looking for a heartier, more savory dish, try The Farmhouse or The Hungry Hunter.

Morning: Hike a scenic, lakefront trail, fish or float on the lake. The spring is good for observing active wildlife and good fishing. Spend the morning enjoying the natural scenery, there will be plenty of things to spend your money on later in the day.

Lunch: Eat catfish (or other favorites) at Flat Creek Grill. There are a few locations, but all are accessible either by boat or car.

Afternoon: Explore Top of the Rock, another Johnny Morris attraction with the same look and feel as the Bass Pro Shops and Wonders of Wildlife.

Dinner: Eat on the lake with a dinner cruise on the Branson Belle.

Day Four: Roaring River State Park

If you're most excited about getting out in nature, this last day is meant for you. The spring is the perfect time to see Roaring River State Park in all its beauty, as water levels will likely be at their highest, and waterfalls will flow freely.

Breakfast: Enjoy the classics at Sunrise Cafe in Cassville. It's a local mom-and-pop diner with all the fixings. It's almost a tradition for our family to get Belgian waffles topped with fruit and whipped cream.

Morning: Hike the trails at Roaring River State Park and explore the visitor's center. We love morning hikes but keep in mind that the grass will still be pretty wet. I recommend wearing waterproof, full-leather hiking boots or shoes. Or at least bring a change of socks and shoes.

Lunch: Enjoy lunch at the Roaring River Restaurant located inside the Emery Melton Inn & Conference Center inside the park.

Afternoon: Check out the fish hatchery and put a pole in the water. Roaring River State Park is a fishing park. The hatchery is free to visit, but to participate in the fun fishing experience, you'll need:

A fishing license

A trout tag (from March through October)

A trout tag costs $4 for adults and $3 for kids under 16. You can pick both of these up inside the on-site Pro shop , along with any tackle you may need.

Dinner: Stop by the local barbeque hotspot, Hogtied, for award-winning (seriously, so many trophies). There are no wrong choices, but I'm choosing, I like the brisket! Ribs are also an easy favorite and you'll never go wrong with a simple pulled pork sandwich.

The day dawned mild and sunny on the Gasconade River in southwest Missouri. As veteran floaters of this waterway, we anticipated a quiet, peaceful trip. And that’s just what we got. Using a large four-seater Osage canoe made in Lebanon, our group put in at Austin Ford on Wright County’s Route E for this short trip and took out at Buzzard’s Bluff. Handling our own transportation, we tied the canoe to the top of a farm truck. With two vehicles—one to leave at the pickup point and the other to transport the floaters and canoe—we set off for a day on the river. Packing simple provisions of Spam, saltines, plastic bottles of frozen water, and a few other items, we feasted on a gravel bar with a repast that tasted more like a five-course luncheon than a meal from a can. The bottled water soon warmed—but it was still wet!

Life on the river carries its own unique lessons. Here, the senses are on overload in this peaceful environment. There were times when the only sound was of the paddles dipping and lifting in the current. Once, we froze in silence as an otter and her young cavorted among the tree roots on the nearby bank. Yet these playful little imps showed no fear of us. One of the wiser Missourians in our canoe surmised, “It was because nothing in the water had ever done them harm.”

Fat cicadas drowned out our voices with their rhythmic siren song. Noisy crows called from tree to tree. An eagle circled overhead as if leading us to the next tributary. Along the banks, bubbling waterfalls poured from steep limestone bluffs. Maidenhair ferns flourished in moist crevices. Giant sycamores interlaced their branches joining opposite banks. All the while, sunlight danced on the blue water like beams from a hidden light.

A canoe floating on a peaceful, uncrowded Missouri river holds its own delights. Especially if you’ve never done one before, add a canoe and float trip to your bucket list of things to do this summer. There are dozens of rivers in the Show-Me State where canoes are the accepted mode of travel. Here are five Ozark waterways that not only serve as rites of passage for any aspiring canoer but also promise a quiet respite from the weekday world of harried humanity.

1. Current River

As part of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, the Current River and its wild tributary, the Jacks Fork, have been protected by an act of Congress since 1964. The Current flows primarily through Shannon County, but extends into Carter, Dent, and Texas Counties as well; the nearest towns are Van Buren and Eminence. Promoted as one of the Midwest’s “best float streams,” the Current River is supported by some of the nation’s largest limestone springs.

Other than the clear water and spectacular landscape, the park includes many caves, including Round Spring Caverns, with a ranger-led tour that is available at https://www.liveyouraloha.com/ site. Don’t overlook the nearby historic sites, including Alley Spring, Round Spring, and Big Spring. Many water enthusiasts consider the Current River as one of the best canoe trips in the area.

2. Big Piney River

One of the largest tributaries of the Gasconade, the Big Piney is a top fishing stream as well as a canoeist’s dream. Picturesque limestone bluffs border the river in its upper and middle sections. Pine trees stand like centurion soldiers atop the cliffs.

Canoeing on the Big Piney, floaters pass by numerous medium-sized and beautiful springs. The river is floatable throughout the summer, as springs supply a constant source of water. Water levels change during especially dry years. As on all Missouri rivers, be alert for fallen trees and snags as high water levels often wash them from the bank. When this happens, pull the canoe to a gravel bar, carefully step out, remove any items and either drag the craft around the tree if possible or lift the canoe over the tree. On the river, decisions must often be made quickly.

The last three miles of the lower river, below historic Route 66, is very ordinary—but worth the effort to continue on the Gasconade.

3. Niangua River

Near Lebanon in the heart of the Missouri Ozarks, the Niangua River covers a ten-mile stretch that most consider one of the most beautiful in the state. Canoeists on the Niangua River have the advantage of being near Bennett Spring State Park and one of the state Conservation Department’s trout hatcheries. You can add additional activities to your floating or fishing at the park’s headquarters. The best float sites are the upper sections of the Niangua and the section immediately below the park. Check on the water level before scheduling a trip. In periods of high water, Laclede County’s Route M would be good canoeing water. North of Route 32, however, the river consists of gravel bars and low water, making it seldom floatable. Schedule your float trip during the workweek; Niangua’s association with Bennett Spring State Park makes the area usually crowded on hot, summer weekends.

4. Gasconade River

Measuring about 280 miles long, the Gasconade is the longest river completely within the boundary of Missouri. It’s also known as one of the world’s most crooked rivers. The Gasconade begins in the Ozarks near Hartville and winds through Wright, Laclede, Pulaski, Phelps, Maries, Osage, and Gasconade Counties in a north-northeasterly direction. Meandering through Mark Twain National Forest, it empties into the Missouri River west of Hermann.

The word Gasconade comes from the French word Gascon, a term for the reportedly boastful people from the Gascony region of France. Early French settlers to the area applied this name to the American Indians of the region who were a boastful tribe. The waters of the Gasconade are often boisterous, too!

Limestone bluffs, natural springs, and caves surrounding the Gasconade make this one of the most beautiful Missouri rivers. Unless you canoe on a weekend or holiday, expect to see a few boaters.

5. North Fork River

Southeast of Mountain Grove in Wright County, the North Fork River is 109 miles in length. Flowing southward, the river meanders through Douglas and Ozark Counties. If you float south to Tecumseh, the water flows into Norfork Lake, a reservoir created by Norfork Dam in Baxter County, Arkansas, and then joins the White River. As the main water run through Mark Twain National Forest, many streams flow into the North Fork. Dawt Mill, a renovated gristmill near the river, provides a natural setting for photography.

Day Trips Near Springfield

1. Ozark—Caves and Curds

Drive six miles south of Springfield to the charming town of Ozark . Cool off in the Smallin Civil War Cave during a one-hour guided tour that details the cave's history. Bring a jacket and be prepared to walk about a half mile; it’s stroller and wheelchair accessible. See bats, blind salamanders and a rare species of cave crayfish. If you’re up for a more physical challenge, take the two-hour off-trail Wild Tour, where you’ll splash through knee-deep water and see parts of the cave others miss. Advance reservations are required, and you must be at least 12 years old for the Wild Tour. Before you leave town, stop at Heather Hill Farms , where you’ll find over 175 varieties of cheese, many produced locally.

2. Republic—Civil War Site

Immerse yourself in Civil War history with a day trip to the town of Republic , Missouri, about 13 miles south of Springfield. Stop at Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield , the site of the second Civil War battle. Standing amid so much history, it’s not difficult to imagine what it must have been like on that fateful day. This National Park, the site of one of the best-preserved battlefields in the country, has a museum full of artifacts, photographs and historical information about the men who fought and died there on August 10, 1861. Read soldiers' letters, check out their weapons and learn about Nathaniel Lyon, a Union General killed at Wilson's Creek.

3. Nixa—Civic Pride

You’ll get a real feel for agricultural Missouri when you visit this little town with a population of less than 20,000. Nixa is just six miles south of Springfield along U.S. Highway 160. Visit the quaint downtown where you can grab a cone from Braum’s Ice Cream and Dairy Store or lunch at Bud and Walt’s Pizza and Pasta . Catch a Little League game; then cool off in the pool at the Aquatics Center. Romp through the 40-acre McCauley Park where you can play a rousing game of tennis, have a picnic or hit the playground. Don't miss the park's xeriscape garden. See a movie or bowl a few frames at Century Lanes before heading back to Springfield.

4. Pleasant Hope—Tiny and Quaint

A leisurely drive through tiny Pleasant Hope —settled in the mid-1800s—leads you past quaint barns and rolling hills. Go for a lazy stroll in City Park and pay your respects at the Veterans Memorial . Grab lunch at Junction Grill or pick up some necessities at Laney Limited , the grocer on Main Street. The charm of Pleasant Hope lies in its small-town atmosphere; only 614 people call this place home. Wander around town to meet the locals and learn something new.

5. Monett—Natural Beauty

Fifty miles southwest of Springfield, the small town of Monett is a rural haven that’s well worth the drive. Put on your walking shoes and set out on the Greenway Trail, a path that takes you on a comprehensive tour of the town. If you have a free weekend, stop by the Monett Racing Speedway and take the kids on a spin around the track. Stroll through the town, grab an ice cream at New Beginnings Ice Cream and Deli or a meal at the Happy House Restaurant . Pick up a copy of the " Monett Times " to see what's happening locally.

6. Branson—Variety's the Spice

There's so much to do in Branson, you'll hardly know where to begin. The city is a hub for entertainers, and you'll certainly find one that suits your musical or entertainment taste—from comedians to acrobats to an exciting variety of country music legends. The town is chock-full of excellent restaurants, and there's plenty of opportunity for people-watching, too. A Cave-Hopping Adventure

Who it’s for: Spelunkers and geology fans Why it’s great: Missouri’s karst topography means we have plenty of underground wonders worth exploring nearby. Must-do list : Fantastic Caverns ( 4872 N. Talking Rocks Cavern

It takes about an hour to trek all the way through Talking Rocks Cavern on this guided tour across wooden boardwalks and concrete stairs, and it’s worth every step. Tour guides focus on educating visitors on the history and geology of the cave as you walk through and spy a variety of incredible formations.

Marvel Cave at Silver Dollar City

A tour of Marvel Cave, which sits underneath  Silver Dollar City, takes visitors down about 500 feet below the surface on a one-hour guided trek. You’ll see a massive  cathedral room and lots of cool formations in this wet limestone cave. As you learn about the  colorful history of the cave and the park, you’ll get a thigh workout because there are a ton  of stairs here!

Smallin Civil War Cave With its super-wide mouth, Smallin Civil War Cave has one of the prettiest entrances around. Make sure you visit after a rain, so you can see a stream trickling over the rocks and out of the mouth of the cave. A guided tour filled with information about the area’s indigenous  people and the cave’s history takes visitors along a boardwalk for an easy and flat trek.

Fantastic Caverns This is the only cave on our list where you ride through on a Jeep-pulled tram instead of walking through. That means it’s great for  visitors who might struggle on an hour-long and sometimes steep walk. You’ll hear fun history (like how the cave was discovered by a local farmer’s dog) as you travel through wide spaces filled with stunning formations.

Lake of the Ozarks

Excelsior Springs, Missouri

Who it’s for: A girls’ getaway Why it’s great:  Harry Truman slept here! The hotel dates to 1888 but its most storied claim to fame is that in 1948, Harry Truman spent the night he was elected President there. The grounds are beautiful but it’s the spa that steals the show. It is first-class all the way. Although a flood last summer damaged the indoor lap pool causing it to be closed for repair, there are plenty of other perks to lower your heart rate and stress level. The Grotto is the centerpiece of the spa. It includes a dry sauna, steam sauna, hot tub, cold plunge shower, steam shower and an exfoliation bar. Can you say “aaahhh”? French Lick, Indiana

Who it’s for: Couples on a romantic anniversary trip Why it’s great:  The resort is actually two beautiful hotels—French Lick Springs Hotel and West Baden Springs Hotel—set a mile apart. Both earned notoriety from the medicinal waters that flow through the property. Today though, guests come to enjoy a poolside afternoon, hike miles of trails in the adjacent Hoosier National Forest, saddle up for a trail ride, take aim on the shooting clay range, try their luck in the onsite casino, hit the links or just sit on the expansive front porch with a cool drink and watch the world go by. Be sure to make a reservation for a window table in 1875: The Steakhouse at French Lick Springs Hotel for a romantic dinner. Bonus: French Lick is the childhood home of basketball great Larry Bird. Louisville,  Kentucky

Who it’s for: Kentucky Derby bucket listers Why it’s great:  With more than 100 years of refined elegance, The Brown Hotel is the pride of Louisville. It’s easy to see why. Walking through the lobby, you can almost feel money dripping from the ceiling and oozing from the walls. After a day at the races, the lobby bar makes for a perfect place to celebrate your winnings or drown your losses with a tumbler of smooth Kentucky bourbon. Louisville is home to Churchill Downs with a live racing season in May, June, September and early October. No trip to The Brown Hotel is complete without ordering the world-famous Hot Brown, an open-faced turkey, cheese, bacon, tomato and mornay sauce sandwich, created at the hotel in 1926. Mason City, Iowa

Who it’s for: Lovers of Frank Lloyd Wright’s architecture (and The Music Man ) Why it’s great: The Park Inn is the last Frank Lloyd Wright-designed hotel in the world. Built in 1912, it has been a hotel, an office building, a strip club and then a vacant eyesore. In the early 2000s, The Park Inn underwent a 12-year, $18 million renovation to restore it to its Prairie School-style beauty. An adjacent law office, also designed by Wright, was incorporated into the hotel to allow for 27 boutique hotel rooms. There’s also a wonderful restaurant and downstairs lounge. But The Park Inn isn’t the only Wright-related architectural draw. Many of his students designed homes in the Prairie School style and they are scattered throughout Mason City. An easy-to-follow driving tour map is available from the visitor’s center. Mason City is also home to Meredith Wilson who wrote The Music Man . Ya got trouble, right here in Mason City, er, I mean, River City. The driving tour includes Wilson’s home. Where to stay:   The Park Inn ( 7 W.
