Primary title screen for seasons 1 and 2

The opening title sequences for Star Trek: The Original Series featured the USS Enterprise flying through space and past planets , narrated by William Shatner : " Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise . Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before. "

As ITV is a commercial channel, the advert break for Star Trek: The Original Series featured a still screenshot of James T. Kirk, Spock, Montgomery "Scotty" Scott, Pavel Chekov, Christine Chapel, Uhura, Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy and Hikaru Sulu are all sitting inside USS Enterprise . Also, there's no music.

As Robert H. Justman explained to Star Trek: The Magazine , footage of the Enterprise for the opening titles was expected to be produced by the Howard Anderson Company in Summer 1966 . By August 1966 , Gene Roddenberry and Justman were running out of time to get the footage, and insisted on a viewing, where most shots "jiggled and joggled" to the point of being nearly unusable. Roddenberry and Justman took what they had, along with footage from the two pilots (" The Cage " and " Where No Man Has Gone Before ") and cobbled together the sequence. Justman considered his major contribution to be the suggestion that the Enterprise "deliver" the cast credits as the ship zoomed by, rather than the names just pop on the screen as suggested by Roddenberry. Gene Roddenberry wrote lyrics for the " Theme from Star Trek " in order to secure a partial writer's credit for the song. These lyrics were never recorded as part of the original theme song, and thus were never aired. ( citation needed • edit )

The opening tagline of Star Trek includes a split infinitive : " To boldly go where no man has gone before. " This fact was memorably highlighted by Cambridge-educated sci-fi writer and satirist Douglas Adams who wrote in his Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy that, " all dared to brave unknown terrors, to do mighty deeds, to boldly split infinitives that no man had split before, and thus was the Empire forged. " The pilot episode of Star Trek: Enterprise , " Broken Bow ", has Zefram Cochrane delivering that phrase without the split infinitive as "to go boldly." The English rule forbidding split infinitives appeared in the mid-19th century; however, modern reference books do not include this rule, and the "to boldly go" from Star Trek is a prime example of where a split infinitive is perfectly acceptable. NATO Explains Why The Theme For ‘Star Trek: First Contact’ Was Played At Sweden’s Induction Ceremony

star trek movie intro

| March 30, 2024 | By: Anthony Pascale 26 comments so far

Earlier this month Sweden officially joined NATO, becoming the 32nd member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. There was an official ceremony welcoming Sweden at NATO HQ in Brussels, raising their flag to join the other nations in the defense alliance. The Swedish delegation was led by Crown Princess Victoria and Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, welcomed by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. A military band was on hand for the ceremony and there was a surprising bit of music from the final frontier that got things started. TrekMovie has the exclusive to explain what happened.

Sounds Swedish

The flag ceremony was held on March 11 in Belgium. As the assorted officials gathered and the flagbearers prepared to raise the Swedish flag, the band started off the event playing the main theme from Jerry Goldsmith’s score for the 1996 film Star Trek: First Contact . You can see and hear the moment below from the live stream replay via Sky News.  [music starts after first 15 seconds]

This bit of Trek showing up at such an auspicious occasion eventually got noticed by some fans. Certainly NATO’s mission of an alliance of partners working together to “guarantee the freedom and security of its members” fits with the ideals of the United Federation of Planets and Starfleet, but it still is curious. TrekMovie reached out to NATO to find out more about  First Contact showing up for Sweden’s big moment, and they replied.

A NATO official tells TrekMovie:

“Ahead of ceremonial military events, the band will often play a range of popular music, with the band given discretion with respect to which music to play. Jerry Goldsmith was a masterful film composer, as exemplified by his work on Star Trek’s “First Contact”. At the ceremony itself, the national anthem of Sweden and the NATO anthem were played.”

The same official noted that next week NATO is celebrating its 75th anniversary. There will be a ceremony complete with military bands and they are expected to again be playing a range of popular songs as guests arrive. It’s not known if Star Trek will be part of their repertoire.

Definitely Swedish

While it’s clear the musical director for the military band was a fan of Jerry Goldsmith, it could be they are also enough of a Trek fan to see a connection to the alliance and the themes of First Contact , which showed humanity’s first encounter with an alien race. Meeting the Vulcans in the aftermath of a world war began a new era of galactic cooperation that is held up as an idealized future for humanity.

They may also be a big enough fan to remember the specific connection between First Contact and Sweden. In the film, the USS Enterprise-E travels back in time from the 24th century to 2063. When Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) tries to explain the Borg to 21st century local Lily Sloane (Alfre Woodard) you get a bit of a recurring Sweden gag…

Alternatively, First Contact took place in the aftermath of a nuclear war…

Er, yeah, wasn’t there also a passing mention of the “Eastern Coalition” or some such? I think it’s when they’re under attack from the Borg sphere.

Yes. The Eastern Coalition was heavily involved in WWIII

Okay, thanks.

This was wonderful. as Frakes tweeted.

FC was best Trek movie in many a die hard fan and casual fan/general movie audiences eyes (it was deemed so by many critics and fans when it came out and for a good few years until Wrath came back to the fore and won out in the end) and FC made Trek ‘cool’ for a while, so cool I could buy a STFC caramel filled chocolate bar in my local newsagent (Trek wasnt ‘cool’ again until ST09/ID, and before FC? maybe you could say TWOK or TVH or some of TNG were a ‘cool’ times for Trek, maybe )

The Swedish government has great taste in music.

My favourite score in Star Trek (along with the score to the relaunch of the Enterprise-D in Picard).

Are you talking about “Make it So” on the S3 Picard soundtrack? I listen to it every morning. It’s my favorite too.

That’s the one!!! An incredible piece of music!

Mine too. I LOVE it! 🖖😍👍📯🎶🤝🇸🇪

Same here dear! 😊

This is great! I had forgotten the Borg sounds Swedish gag in FC. I bet that was the fun inspiration for the selection. LOL!

That takes me back. I remember seeing First Contact in the theater in ’96 and the Borg/Swedish gag getting a big laugh. That was a fun night.

Seeing it for the first time, on the big screen back in 1996 — with a really fun, “borgified” laser show with quotes, images and music (!) from the movie directly above the audience, right before the feature — was a great night for us, too! 💨🌫💥🌫💨

What a great 🎶 choice for this event! 🖖😍

A Borg laser show? Awesome!

It was so well done, it must’ve been an officially licensed event that the German CinemaxX chain of theaters ran for their screenings. Wondering now, if it was basically the official trailer (or an extended version of it) as a laser show… maybe somebody else around here can confirm that part of it? 🤷‍♂️

Amazing. Historic. So proud. What an honor for the franchise, for the fans.

It actually sounds like a national anthem.

Goldsmith is my favorite composer in the history of the world bar none but I find the FC theme to fall under the heading of coming across as just ‘graduation day’ music, which is something that happens with some lesser John Williams stuff too. I’m not just picking on the biggies … Dennis McCarthy’s GEN score has the same effect on me, a little more distracting than engaging.

There’s a history with JG’s stuff being trotted out inappropriately (like Trump using AIR FORCE ONE music during a campaign instead of the more appropriate Vader/Imperial March or Nazi Germany’s Horst-Wessel-Lied), but I think the FC stuff might actually be more appropriate for NATO than for the movie.

Interesting, kmart. So, how would you rank your Trek score preferences? For me, it depends on my own mood. Of course, JG is a giant. I also like parts of Horner’s music and the eeriness and mysteriousness of Russo’s Picard s1 theme.

TMP and TFF and TWOK are my fave scores (and films.)

“ like Trump using AIR FORCE ONE music during a campaign instead of the more appropriate Vader/Imperial March or Nazi Germany’s Horst-Wessel-Lied ” How very one-sided of you. You should have left politics out of this. Some would see it as the opposite.

Some ALWAYS see it as the opposite. That’s what makes for horse-racing. Nice to see you out in the open on this.

One word: Priceless.

Fantastic! A great choice. Such a great score to a great film.

Too bad this didn’t happen on actual First Contact Day. But close enough! This is a great theme and a great nod to Star Trek.

The Star Trek: Origins movie shouldn't ignore Star Trek: Enterprise

A new origins movie for Star Trek is set to go into production later on this year for a possible 2025 or 2026 release. There's has been a lot of speculation about the timeline of the film, with Inverse offering plenty of detail about the Star Trek timeline and how a film set in the 2210s or 2220s wouldn't rattle too much of Trek's history in either timeline with the caveat that "if you don't think about the prequel series, Star Trek: Enterprise."

Enterprise was set during 2151, and the events of the series were interwoven with other series in the franchise, such as the Ferengi's first appearance on the series instead of Star Trek: The Next Generation and, of course, the horrible series finale that connected The Next Generation's Commander Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes) and Counselor Troi (Marina Sirtis). Yes, plenty of fans would love to forget the finale, but the fact remains that it happened. And even Star Trek: Discovery referenced Archer's visit to Qo'noS from the premiere of the series. So it's kind of hard to jettison the series as a whole.

With the Origins movie supposedly set before the Kirk and Spock era as the movie has been touted, that could put it after Enterprise, but, if the movie is set during the Prime timeline, there are a lot of landmines that could potentially disrupt canon. Some fans, of course, will say that canon has been shredded by various other series already, but a film on the big screen takes things to a new level, especially if it's supposed to be the origination of some aspect of Star Trek.

One possible idea would be to take the story back to Captain Pike's origins, which would still put the movie in the 2230s, roughly, with Strange New Worlds being set in 2259. Since Strange New Worlds is an ongoing series, that would be a great tie-in. Another option would be the origins of Captain April who helmed the Enterprise in 2245. Hopefully, the movie won't take the origin storyline so far back in time that it will disrupt everything that has been created. And, if that's the choice that is taken, then we can just hope the movie gets set in the Kelvin timeline so the Prime timeline remains as unaffected as possible!

10 best love triangles in sports movies (including challengers).

Though sports movies aren't typically known for their romantic themes, some of the best include compelling love triangles between characters.

  • Sports and romance movies intersect in love triangles, combining competition and complex relationships for compelling storytelling.
  • Challengers, a new tennis drama starring Zendaya, brings the niche of sports romance movies back to the mainstream.
  • Love triangles in movies like Match Point and Love & Basketball delve deep into themes of greed, entitlement, and personal growth.

The intersection between Sports Movies and romance movies doesn't include the highest volume of films, but the great love triangles that bridge the gap between genres make for excellent storytelling. These types of movies have been made since the beginning of cinema, as many romance movies have employed the trope of the love triangle. Challengers is a new tennis drama starring Zendaya that brings this niche of cinema back to the mainstream and has caused quite a stir with its promise of incredible romantic tension.

Themes like competition, insecurity, and the drive to be the best can all be explored through athletics of every level in addition to complex relationship dynamics.

While some of the most annoying movie love triangles are often the ones audiences remember the best, ideally a love triangle should elevate the plot and mirror the tone of the story. Themes like competition, insecurity, and the drive to be the best can all be explored through athletics of every level in addition to complex relationship dynamics. Within a love triangle, there are frequently two people who obviously belong together and a third person who's keeping them apart. However, sometimes audiences have no idea who will end up together until the final moments of the film.

12 Awesome Sports Movies Not Based On A True Story

10 breaking away (1979), directed by peter yates.

The divide between these men and the local university students is put on display, and the importance of money, resources, and class when it comes to high-level competitive sports is a central theme throughout the narrative.

In Breaking Away cycling takes a front-row seat in the narrative, but closely following the sport are the ups and downs of the lives of a group of young men in Indiana. The divide between these men and the local university students is put on display, and the importance of money, resources, and class when it comes to high-level competitive sports is a central theme throughout the narrative. This is also a feature of the love triangle between Dave (Dennis Christopher), Katherine (Robyn Douglass), and her boyfriend Rod (Hart Bochner).

Dave is one of the locals and feels he can't compete with Rod as he's a university student and has a group of imposing fraternity brothers behind him. Although Katherine is less concerned with these differences, she still has a different social standing than Dave, which colors their relationship. To prove his worth to himself and Katherine, he competes in the university bike race and learns the importance of being true to himself.

Breaking Away is available to rent on Prime Video or Apple TV.

9 Whip It (2009)

Throughout the story, Bliss meets Oliver (Landon Pigg), but he ends up cheating on Bliss with another girl. In Match Point , the love triangle, or more accurately, square, isn't characterized by star-crossed lovers or extenuating circumstances but as a symptom of larger issues of greed and selfishness.

Match Point is a sports movie in the loosest sense of the term, as the film is much more concerned with the romantic entanglements of its characters. Chris Wilton (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) is a former tennis pro who marries into an upper-class family and soon finds himself navigating a world for which he doesn't have a rule book. The central conflict of the film occurs when Chris has an affair with his brother-in-law's girlfriend, Nola (Scarlett Johansson), and she gets pregnant. Soon Chris finds himself committing acts he never thought himself capable of.

In Match Point , the love triangle, or more accurately, square, isn't characterized by star-crossed lovers or extenuating circumstances but as a symptom of larger issues of greed and selfishness. Chris is easily corrupted by money, power, and his newfound social standing, and feels entitled to keep these parts of his life despite his unfaithfulness. Match Point allows its characters to revel in the drama and intrigue of their salacious actions, but it doesn't reward the audience for rooting for them.

7 A League Of Their Own (1992)

Directed by penny marshall, a league of their own (1992).

A League of Their Own is a comedy sports drama directed by Penny Marshall that was released in 1992. As professional Major League Baseball's player count dwindles following World War II, the Chicago Cubs owner helps build a women's league to save the sport. Now, hoping to make it big, the women of the new team must face off against fellow rival all-female teams and prejudice against their gender.

A League of Their Own is one of the few prominent sports movies directed by a woman, Penny Marshall, and centers on the previously unexplored history of women's major league baseball. The recent but short-lived A League of Their Own series was canceled despite expanding upon the world created by the landmark film and shedding light on how much a part of LGBTQIA+ history the league was. During World War II when the majority of adult men in the U.S. were fighting overseas, major league baseball was kept alive through the work of a talented group of women.

The movie is more interested in being a historical record of this period and uses individual experiences as a window into the universality of the women's league. There is a hinted potential romance between Dottie (Geena Davis) and Jimmy (Tom Hanks), but this leans more toward mutual respect and understanding, and a deep love for the game. Dottie is married, and in the end, this keeps her from baseball, and continuing with the league past the first season. However, the film doesn't pass judgment on her choices and pays tribute to her contributions to her team.

Watch A League of Their Own AMC+, or on Prime Video with a premium subscription.

6 She’s The Man (2006)

Directed by andy fickman, she's the man.

Like many other teen rom-coms from the late 1990s and early 2000s, She's The Man is a movie that's secretly a Shakespeare adaptation . Based on the play, Twelfth Night , Amanda Bynes plays the lead character, Viola, a young woman who's family and boyfriend frequently underestimate her abilities as a soccer player. To combat this, she disguises herself as her brother and starts playing for the men's team at his boarding school. While being herself and masquerading as her brother, Sebastian, Viola is embroiled in much more than a love triangle and finds herself fending off the advances of everyone except the person she's interested in.

This man, Duke, played by a charming Channing Tatum, is Sebastian's roommate and trains the disguised Viola to be a better player so she can prove herself to her friends, family, and the school.

This man, Duke, played by a charming Channing Tatum, is Sebastian's roommate and trains the disguised Viola to be a better player so she can prove herself to her friends, family, and the school. This results in excellent training montages and plenty of sweet moments between Duke and Viola as they unknowingly fall in love. However, fate is constantly pulling them apart, as Viola and Duke's exes are after them. Though She's The Man experiences many pitfalls common in somewhat cheesy teen movies, it has genuine emotion, which comes through in Viola and Duke's relationship.

5 Major League (1989)

Directed by david s. ward, major league.

All odds are against the fictionalized version of the now-renamed baseball team from Cleveland, Ohio. When the team's new owner, Rachel Phelps (Margaret Whitton), tries to sabotage the team so she can move them to Florida, she recruits a rag-tag group of players she's sure will tank the team's success rate. However, she could never have expected that the catcher, Jake Taylor (Tom Berenger), would see the potential of his teammates and turn the whole scheme on its head.

Though Taylor is the protagonist of the film, a young Charlie Sheen is also featured as a pitcher whose throw is corrected when he realizes he needs glasses. Behind the scenes of the training and games, Taylor is on a mission to get the love of his life back but she's engaged to someone else. While this love triangle isn't central to the film's plot, it does serve as excellent motivation for Taylor to get his act together and is paramount to his character development.

4 Bend It Like Beckham (2002)

Directed by gurinder chadha, bend it like beckham.

Not only does it elevate the experience of young female athletes, a group highly underrepresented in the media, but it positively depicts a positive female friendship at the heart of the narrative.

The cult-classic teen sports film, Bend It Like Beckham , has become a hallmark of the sports genre for a reason. Not only does it elevate the experience of young female athletes, a group highly underrepresented in the media, but it positively depicts a positive female friendship at the heart of the narrative. Additionally, Jess' (Parminder Nagra) identity as a young Indian woman living in England is highlighted, as well as the difference in cultural expectations in her immigrant family versus Juliette's (Kiera Knightley) white British family.

While these differences play a major role, Bend It Like Beckham is far more concerned with how Juliette and Jess share many similarities, like their love of football. The central fight between the two women is caused by their mutual affection for their young coach, Joe (Jonathan Rhys Meyers). Though this is a relatable experience for audiences to identify with, the most compelling relationship in the movie is between Jess and Juliette. Their reconciliation and Jess' performance on the field are easily the most emotional parts of the story.

3 Love & Basketball (2000)

Directed by gina prince-bythewood, love & basketball (2000).

Love & Basketball, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, is a romantic sports-drama film that stars Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps star as childhood neighbors who aspire to professional basketball careers while continuing to explore their relationship.

Gina Prince-Bythewood's seminal romantic comedy, Love & Basketball features Omar Epps and Sanaa Lathan as two young basketball players as much in love with the game as they are with each other. The film depicts the gendered differences between the experience of two people becoming professional basketball players and the passage of time from childhood to adulthood. Though Quincy (Epps) and Monica (Lathan) have grown up together and can't seem to break free of their connection, in the final act of the film they drift too far apart and Quincy gets engaged to someone else.

While his fiancée is the third part of the triangle within the movie's plot, it could be argued that basketball itself is the other love that Quincy and Monica put before the other throughout the film. Their professional triumphs and setbacks have an immediate impact on their personal lives and relationships, with each other and their families. However, by the end of the film, they realize there is room for their love and basketball in their lives, and their paths are always meant to be entwined with both.

Watch Love & Basketball on Netflix or rent on Prime Video.

2 Bull Durham (1988)

Directed by ron shelton, bull durham.

Susan Sarandon, Kevin Costner, and a young Tim Robbins make the incredible love triangle in the ode to minor league baseball, Bull Durham . Sarandon's Annie takes rookie player Nuke (Robbins) under her wing when he joins the team as he has plenty of natural talent, but little experience and forethought to back it up. The relationship between Annie and Nuke is one between a teacher and student, and it's clear that Annie has no intentions of spending more than a season educating him. However, her chemistry with Crash (Costner) is immediate, and their connection can't be denied.

Unfortunately, Crash doesn't make it easy on Annie, and she takes a long time to come around to the idea that she could have a serious relationship with anything other than baseball. Bull Durham doesn't take itself too seriously, emphasizing the comedic aspects of its rom-com format, but the film is so much more than that. It's gone down in history as one of the best sports movies of all time, and a large part of that is how the character's interpersonal relationships elevate the interworkings of a minor league team.

Was Crash Davis A Real Baseball Player? Kevin Costner's Bull Durham Character Explained

1 challengers (2024), directed by luca guadagnino, challengers.

Challengers is a romantic sports comedy film by director Luca Guadagnino. The film stars Zendaya as a retired Tennis legend who, while trying to coach her husband and lead him to victory in an upcoming Tennis match, discovers his coming opponent is her ex-lover.

Although Challengers is not based on a true story , real-life tennis matches and events inspired the film. Tennis doesn't have the reach of baseball or football in American culture, it's just as exciting a game Challengers helps to expose audiences to the intricacies and dramas of pro-level tennis. The film takes place over many years as the stars of three tennis players rise and fall and their relationships with each other change. At the center of the triangle is Tashi Duncan (Zendaya), the best player of the three, who is taken out of the game by a life-changing injury.

The two men may believe that their competition is only on the court, but behind the scenes, Tashi is pulling the strings.

However, she doesn't let this stop her from playing on a different court. Her husband, Art Donaldson (Mike Faist), and former lover, Patrick Zweig (Josh O'Connor) are going head-to-head in a definitive match. The two men may believe that their competition is only on the court, but behind the scenes, Tashi is pulling the strings. What makes this an excellent love triangle is how high the stakes are, and how willing each party is to betray the others. This builds tension and creates unforgettable drama, making the audience question who deserves to win, or find love.

Star Trek’s Michael Dorn Wanted Worf To Kill A Popular Deep Space Nine Character In Picard Season 3, And I’m Glad This Didn’t Happen

I'm breathing a sigh of relief.

Michael Dorn as Worf in Star Trek: Picard Season 3 promo picture

Although Star Trek: Picard Season 3 reunited most of the Star Trek: The Next Generation starring actors for the first time since 2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis , they didn’t all show up at once. In the case of Michael Dorn’s Worf , his first scene in the episode “Disengage” saw him rescuing Michelle Hurd’s Raffi Musiker from the crime lord Sneed, and he beheaded the Ferengi on his way out. But if Dorn had his way, he would have killed a different Ferengi instead: Quark, one of the other major characters from S tar Trek: Deep Space Nine , and I’m glad this didn’t happen.

Armin Shimerman, who played Quark for the entirety of Deep Space Nine ’s seven-season run, shared this tidbit of information while appearing on TrekMovie ’s All Access Star Trek podcast. Dorn came aboard Deep Space Nine at the beginning of Season 4 following The Next Generation’s conclusion, so he and Shimerman spent a lot of time together in the mid-late ‘90s, but decades later, the latter wasn’t particularly enthused about the former wanting to slice Quark’s head off. As he recalled:

Dorn called me up and said, ‘I’m doing an episode of Picard where I kill off a Ferengi. Wouldn’t it be great if it were you?’ I said, ‘Michael no, it would not be great.’ I told him just to forget about that idea altogether.

Jonathan Frakes , who was also a guest on this episode, speculated that Michael Dorn didn’t know Worf would be cutting Sneed’s head off, but Armin Shimerman told the William Riker actor and longtime Star Trek director that, at the very least, Dorn was aware Worf was going to kill a Ferengi. In the end though, it was Sneed who met this fate, with the character being played Aaron Stanford, who previously worked with showrunner Terry Matalas on the 12 Monkeys TV show.

Star Trek: Picard's Showrunner Reveals The True Purpose Of The Show's Ending, And It Actually Makes Me Optimistic About A Follow-Up

Star Trek: Picard Wrapped Up The Story For Patrick Stewart’s Character, But Now He May Be Getting A New Movie, And I Have Mixed Feelings

I am so relieved this Quark idea for Star Trek: Picard never came to fruition. Worf killing off a Ferengi criminal lord mere minutes after we meet this character is one thing, but for him to behead a character that not only is beloved by many Star Trek fans, but whom Worf had known for many years is another. Granted, as Dr. Julian Bashir once said, Quark was definitely not Worf’s “favorite person,” and he tried to steer clear of the bar owner whenever possible. But not only do I not believe that Quark would ever become a crime lord on Sneed’s level, I also don’t buy that Worf would have just killed his former… associate without blinking an eye.

If the day comes that Armin Shimerman reprises Quark in live-action, the character needs to be treated with the proper respect and not just be killed off for shock value. Star Trek: Lower Decks had the right idea, as Shimerman voiced Quark for a meaningful role in the Season 3 episode “Hear All, Trust Nothing.” The fan-proposed Star Trek: Legacy would be the best place for that to happen, though there’s still no word if that project stands a chance of becoming one of the upcoming Star Trek TV shows .

Picard , Deep Space Nine and all the other Star Trek shows (except for Prodigy , which is now at Netflix ) can be streamed with a Paramount+ subscription . Discovery is currently in the midst of its final season, and Lower Decks ’ final season will follow sometime afterwards on the 2024 TV schedule .
