Meet the Star Trek: Picard season 3 cast — who's who in the final season

The past meets the present in Star Trek: Picard season 3.

Patrick Stewart, Jeri Ryan and Jonathan Frakes in Star Trek: Picard season 3

As Star Trek: Picard heads into its final season, fans have a chance to reconnect with familiar faces from Picard's past. Not only will members of the Picard series be back in action, but the entire cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation is returning to join Picard for one last adventure together.

Let's meet the cast of Star Trek: Picard season 3.

Sir Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard

Patrick Stewart in Star Trek: Picard season 3

Admiral Jean-Luc Picard has enjoyed a long career in Starfleet. Even though his days as captain are over, Picard hasn't had much time to enjoy retirement. The first two seasons saw him saving the world, but at the start of season 3 he's happy settling into a quieter life at the family home in Labarre, France, with his girlfriend Laris. But can it last?

Sir Patrick Stewart has been acting longer than Jean-Luc Picard has been in Starfleet (or pretty darn close). From memorable roles like Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men franchise (as well as the latest Doctor Strange movie) to Ebeneezer Scrooge, and even as the voice of Poop in The Emoji Movie , Stewart has long delighted audiences with his baritone voice and warm smile that light up any room he's in.

Michelle Hurd as Raffi Musiker

Michelle Hurd in Star Trek: Picard season 3

Raffi has been through a lot over the course of her time on Star Trek: Picard . We first meet her when she's disillusioned with Starfleet and living as far away from her old life as possible. She returned to Starfleet with a position aboard the Excelsior after helping Picard fight the Romulans at the end of season 1.

Michelle Hurd has been in a number of shows over the years, including the Lethal Weapon series, Hawaii Five-0 and the Marvel Wastelanders: Hawkeye podcast. Prior to her role as Raffi in Star Trek: Picard , she was best known for playing Ellen Briggs in Blindspot .

Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine

Jeri Ryan in Star Trek: Picard

Seven of Nine came back from the Delta Quadrant on Voyager. She tried to enlist in Starfleet, but as a former Borg the Federation wasn't ready to welcome her into their ranks. In the first season of Picard she’s working as a Fenris Ranger, but after reconnecting with Picard she eventually finds herself back at Starfleet, only this time they welcome her thanks to a push from Picard and Admiral Janeway.

Jeri Ryan had been taking on guest starring roles for years, but her career took off when she was cast as Seven of Nine in Star Trek: Voyager in 1997. After the series wrapped in 2001, she went on to star in Boston Public , The O.C. , Shark and Body of Proof, while continuing to make appearances in a number of other shows.

Jonathan Frakes as William Riker

Jonathan Frakes in Star Trek: Picard season 3

William Riker was enjoying life with his wife, Deanna Troi, and their daughter, Kestra, on the planet Nepenthe. They'd settled on Nepenthe in an effort to help their son Thaddeus recover from a virus, but after he died they remained there. Though no longer an active duty member of Starfleet, he was quick to jump back into action to help Picard fight the Romulans in the first season. If there's one thing we know for certain, it's that when Picard needs help, Riker will always answer the call.

Early in his career, a young Jonathan Frakes starred in The Doctors in the late 1970s. He went on to play a number of guest roles before taking on the role of Commander William Riker in Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1987. The role would change the trajectory of his career; after the series ended he starred in the feature films that followed. He continued making appearances in various guest roles, but his main focus was on directing and lending his voice to animated projects. Notably, he voiced the character of David Xanatos in Gargoyles and he voiced Riker in Star Trek: Lower Decks .

Marina Sirtis as Deanna Troi

Marina Sirtis in Star Trek: Picard season 3

Commander Deanna Troi followed her husband William Riker to the Titan after he was promoted to captain. She retired from Starfleet to focus on raising her family on Nepenthe. The loss of her son, Thaddeus, is something that continues to haunt her, especially because the technology to save him existed but it was outlawed because it was tied to synthetic life forms and all synthetic research was banned. She and her family live a simple life, but a good life on Nepenthe, but like her husband, she's ready to help when Picard needs it.

After starring in Star Trek: The Next Generation , Marina Sirtis made guest appearances in a number of shows while also voicing a number of animated characters. She also voiced Troi in Star Trek: Lower Decks .

LeVar Burton as Geordi LaForge

LeVar Burton in Star Trek: Picard season 3

Though we haven't seen Geordi LaForge since Star Trek: Nemesis , when he was still the chief engineer of the U.S.S. Enterprise-E, Picard knows he can still count on Geordi for help when he needs it

Prior to becoming Geordi La Forge on Star Trek: The Next Generation , LeVar Burton was known to legions of young fans as the host of the educational series Reading Rainbow . His breakout role came from Roots in 1977. After TNG wrapped, he continued to show up in various series while also lending his voice to several animated projects. You might remember the big push for Burton to host Jeopardy! ; he'll be hosting his own trivia show, Trivial Pursuit , in the near future. Burton's return to the Star Trek world is deeply personal as his daughter Mica joins him in the series.

Michael Dorn as Worf

Michael Dorn as Worf in Star Trek: Picard season 3

Worf moved on to a new position on Deep Space 9 after the Enterprise-D was destroyed. He started a new life there, marrying Jadzia Dax. As the lone Klingon in Starfleet, he had experience that no one else had, so it's no surprise he went back to the Klingon homeworld and defeated Chancellor Gowron. Worf wasn't interested in becoming the new chancellor, so he passed the title to Martok and eventually became the official ambassador to the Federation.

Michael Dorn's Worf has appeared in more episodes than any other character in the franchise, so returning to Star Trek: Picard gives his record another boost. Outside of Star Trek , Dorn has lent his voice to a number of animated projects and video games, and his voice can be heard in the popular Arrow series, where he voiced the character Prometheus. He also had a recurring role in Castle .

Gates McFadden as Beverly Crusher

Gates McFadden as Beverly Crusher in Star Trek: Picard season 3

Of all his former shipmates, Picard seems to have been in contact with all of them except for Beverly Crusher. Given his long history with her, her late husband Jack (who was Picard's best friend) and her son, Wesley, it's odd they haven’t been in touch at all. The last time we saw Beverly was on the Enterprise-E, but there's been no mention of her since that point.

Gates McFadden has made a few appearances on various TV shows after Star Trek: The Next Generation , and like many of her costars she has done a lot of voice acting. She played a judge in a recurring role on Franklin & Bash and she voiced Beverly Crusher in an episode of Star Trek: Prodigy .

Brent Spiner

Brent Spiner in Star Trek: Picard season 3

We don't know how Brent Spiner fits into Star Trek: Picard season 3 given that Data is officially dead. Of course, Data's death doesn't mean there's no place for Brent Spiner because Data's appearance is based on his creator, Dr. Soong. Evidently, the Soong genes are very strong because Spiner has been able to play different members of the Soong family across many generations and series; he played Dr. Arik Soong in Star Trek: Enterprise . We'll update this section once we learn more about Spiner's role in season 3.

Spiner is best known for his role as Data, of course, but he's been very prolific outside of the Star Trek universe. In addition to a great deal of voice work, he's appeared as himself on The Big Bang Theory, as well as recurring roles in Fresh Hell , Ray Donovan and Threshold .

Todd Stashwick as Liam Shaw

Todd Stashwick in Star Trek: Picard season 3

Todd Stashwick joins the cast in Star Trek: Picard season 3 as Captain Liam Shaw, commander of the Titan. We don't know much about Shaw just yet, so we'll provide updates as soon as we learn more about him.

Stashwick is best known for his role as Deacon in the TV series 12 Monkeys and Father Kieran O'Connell in The Originals . He's made dozens of guest appearances over the years, including a guest role on an episode of Star Trek: Enterprise in 2004.

Ed Speleers as Jack Crusher

Ed Speleers in Star Trek: Picard

We don't know much about Jack Crusher (other than the glaringly obvious connection to Dr. Beverly Crusher), so as soon as we learn more, we'll add it in here.

Ed Speleers is a UK native who is best known for roles in Downton Abbey , Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands and Outlander . He can also be seen in a recurring role in the new season of You .

Star Trek: Picard season 3 is available to watch exclusively on Paramount Plus .

Star Trek: Picard is the eighth main series set in the Star Trek universe, the ninth including the companion series Star Trek: Short Treks , and the eleventh Star Trek series overall. Picard is produced by CBS Studios and stars Patrick Stewart , reprising the role of Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek: The Next Generation . [1] The new series is set twenty years after the events of Star Trek Nemesis , [2] dealing with "the new chapter in Picard's life."

The series forms part of Alex Kurtzman 's five-year deal with CBS to expand the Star Trek franchise . The first season debuted on CBS All Access , which subsequently became Paramount+ . [3] Kurtzman serves as executive producer on the series along with Stewart, as well as James Duff , Akiva Goldsman , Michael Chabon , Trevor Roth , Heather Kadin , and Rod Roddenberry . In addition, Aaron Baiers serves as co-executive producer. [4] Writer Kirsten Beyer devised the concept for the series, [5] and she features as part of the writing staff alongside Kurtzman, Duff, Goldsman, and Chabon. Chabon served as the first season's showrunner. [6]

Production history

The series was announced at the Star Trek Las Vegas convention on 4 August 2018 , where Stewart appeared alongside Kurtzman to reveal his involvement. At the time of the announcement, the series was still early in pre-production, with no scripts written yet. [7] According to the actor, the possibility of Picard's return had been suggested to him about a year before, but he originally planned to reject the idea. However, upon revisiting episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation and realizing the power and influence of the series, he changed his mind. [8] On making the announcement, Stewart referred to the news as "unexpected, but delightful". [9]

It was reported that, on the day before the announcement, CBS applied for a number of trademarks in classes relating to entertainment, which could be connected with the new series. Marks applied for included " Star Trek: Reliant ", and " Star Trek: Destiny ", a title that shares its name with a post-TNG Star Trek novel trilogy . [10]

Work in the writers' room began in September 2018 , and an image of the staff with Stewart was shared by the actor at the end of that month. [11] This image featured Stewart, Duff, Goldsman, Beyer, Chabon and also Diandra Pendleton-Thompson , who had not been previously announced as one of the series' writers. Production was expected to begin in April 2019 , according to Kurtzman, [12] and the series is filmed in California. [13] In December 2018, CBS Corporation Chief Creative Officer David Nevins stated that CBS expected the series to launch late in 2019. [14]

In January 2019 , Kurtzman announced that the series would acknowledge the prime universe elements of Star Trek , stating that " Picard's life was radically altered by the dissolution of the Romulan Empire . " [15]

On 1 March 2019 , it was announced that Hanelle M. Culpepper would be directing the first two episodes of the series. [16] This marks the first time that a black woman was directing the series premiere of a Star Trek series.

On 4 March 2019 , the first two series regulars besides Stewart were announced, Santiago Cabrera and Michelle Hurd . [17] Later in March, Evan Evagora was added to the cast as a series regular. [18]

On 17 April 2019 , it was announced that Alison Pill , Harry Treadaway , and Isa Briones were joining the cast. [19]

On 22 April 2019 , production on the show began. [20] The Star Trek: Picard production is based out of Santa Clarita Studios (SCS). SCS is an independent studio production facility based in Santa Clarita, California, 35 miles north of Hollywood. Although Star Trek was returning to Hollywood, like all of the previous series save Star Trek: Discovery , it is not being shot at Star Trek 's previous home of Paramount Studios. [21] Paramount lost not only its television division, but the entire franchise as well, when the former Viacom was split in late 2005 into the new Viacom (Paramount's holding company at the time Picard began filming) and the CBS Corporation , with Star Trek ownership passing over to the latter. (The two corporations re-merged to form ViacomCBS in December 2019; ViacomCBS was rebranded as Paramount Global in February 2022.)

Shortly before filming began, Michael Chabon was appointed as showrunner. [22] However, CBS did not announce Chabon's position until 27 June 2019 . [23]

On 13 May 2019 , the announcement was made that Amazon Prime had acquired the international streaming rights for the new series, each episode to be aired 24 hours after its American premiere on CBS All Access . [24] [25] Stewart confirmed the news the same day on his Twitter account. [26]

On 15 May 2019 , the first seven-second teaser, revealing the new show's title and logo, was released. [27] This was followed on 23 May by the first live-action teaser trailer in both the CBS All Access and Amazon Prime Video variants. [28] [29] The voice of the teaser trailer's female narrator was not from any of the then-known contracted actresses, but rather from voice actress Merrin Dungey . [30] It was after the series had premiered, that it became apparent that Dungey was also given the guest-starring part of Richter .

On 20 July 2019 the first official Season 1 trailer , coming in at 130 seconds, was unveiled at the 2019 San Diego Comic Con. The trailer featured footage of former Next Generation co-star Brent Spiner , and Star Trek: Voyager star Jeri Ryan reprising her role as Seven of Nine . It was also announced that Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis would each be reprising their roles as William T. Riker and Deanna Troi , respectively.

Robert Picardo revealed on 29 July 2019 that he has been approached about a possible appearance in a second season of the show. [31]

On 31 August 2019 , Michael Chabon posted on Instagram that filming for the first season had been completed. [32]

On 17 September 2019 , Patrick Stewart told The Huddersfield Daily Examiner in his native Yorkshire that " there is ... the possibility of a second Picard series filming in March next year. " [33]

On 5 October 2019 , a second trailer debuted at New York Comic-Con, and it was announced that the first season would air on CBS All Access beginning on 23 January 2020 .

On 7 October 2019 , Kurtzman confirmed that a second season of Picard was "already in the works". [34]

An interview released on 29 November 2019 mentioned Ayelet Waldman as a member of the writing staff for Picard . [35]

On 10 December 2019 , it was announced that Michael Chabon would step down from his role as showrunner, but would remain involved in the show. [36]

On 20 December 2019 , a third teaser trailer debuted almost exactly one month ahead of the CBS All Access series premier online. The teaser revealed new pieces of footage with Jean-Luc Picard in what appears to be Ten Forward , the bar on the USS Enterprise -D , among other quick new moments with William T. Riker , Dr. Agnes Jurati, and what appears to be a Borg flashback. [37]

The renewal of Star Trek: Picard for a second season was informally revealed on 16 December 2019 , and formally announced on 12 January 2020 . [38] [39] The same day, it was announced that Terry Matalas had joined the staff of Picard , and was likely to take over as showrunner from Chabon. [40] Also joining the writing team was Marc Bernardin .

The series premiered in North America on 23 January 2020 on CBS All Access with its first episode " Remembrance ", with the rest of the world following suit the next day through Amazon Prime Video.

In August 2020 , Alex Kurtzman said that the Picard writers' room had continued to meet via Zoom during the COVID-19 pandemic. [41]

Opening credits

The opening title sequence for Star Trek: Picard was meant to connect viewers to Picard's journey in a way that was "more intimate" and "more emotional", containing imagery of Château Picard , a Borg cube , chips and pieces that would culminate into Picard himself. [42]

Development

Picard lead Patrick Stewart initially had no intention whatsoever to reprise his role, feeling that the role had run its course, but decided to accept the invitation for a talk with the producers, as he felt it was only courteous to explain his reasons for declining the part in person. However, during the meeting and its follow-ups, Producer Michael Chabon was able to change Stewart's mind as he was fully willing to take Stewart's vision of an older Picard into account. In the process, Chabon entirely discarded the original story treatment he had written for the opening episode, and started a new, heeding Stewart's concerns. ( TRR : " Remembrance ") Stewart himself has confirmed this (including his initial disinclination to take on the role again) during his appearance on the British talk show The Graham Norton Show (Season 26, Episode 16, 17 January 2020), shortly before the series premiered. [47]

Marina Sirtis appeared with the same wig and contact lenses that she wore in Star Trek Nemesis . She held on to them after that production finished, and informed Picard producers of this, likely saving them time and the US$10,000 it would have cost to make a new wig. [48]

In the months leading up to the premiere of the new series, a monthly prequel three-volume comic book mini-series, Star Trek: Picard - Countdown , was released by IDW Publishing , starting in November 2019. The comic book series introduced several characters, later featured in the live-action production, as well as dealing with events that led up to the ones featured on the show.

Additionally, the Star Trek: Picard Movie & TV Collection Blu-ray Disc set (which incidentally, included the exclusive sixteen-page Star Trek: Sky's the Limit comic book, likewise from IDW [49] ) saw an October/November release as an appetizer. [50] The majority of the titles included in the collection contained events referenced to in the series, which held especially true for TNG : " The Best of Both Worlds ", Star Trek: First Contact , and Star Trek Nemesis .

Picardilly Circus

The London, UK, "Picardilly Circus" subway station

Aside for Patrick Stewart's own remarks on the new show, it was also revealed in the above-mentioned The Graham Norton Show episode, that the London Underground station Piccadilly Circus was temporarily dubbed "Pica r dilly Circus" in anticipation of the new series, whereas Stewart himself had related how he came across a New York City subway line map into which an imaginary subway line was incorporated, outlining the Starfleet arrowhead logo. [51] Both of these occasions had been part of the official franchise overall marketing strategy. London public transportation Head of Customer Information, Design and Partnerships at Transport for London, Julie Dixon, clarified, " We're thrilled to partner with Amazon Prime Video to create this exciting takeover of one of London's most well-known Underground stations to celebrate the launch of Star Trek: Picard . The Star Trek franchise is a global sensation and we're excited to mark this next chapter in a creative and engaging way that connects with tens of thousands of people. We hope that the out of this world activity has brought a bit of unexpected fun to our customers and that they boldly go on their commute, young or old. " [52] The New York City MTA metro company Stewart had come across, additionally dispensed Star Trek: Picard -themed cards/tickets at six pre-selected metro stations, aside from displaying the series billboards and having adjusted its subway line map where the six stations were linked to form the Starfleet arrowhead. [53] [54]

Season 1 first poster

In its first season, Star Trek: Picard was nominated for five Emmy Awards , all in "technical" categories such as makeup and sound editing. It won one, "Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup for a Series, Limited Series, Movie or Special".

FanSets debuted its first Star Trek: Picard pins in 2019.

CherryTree previewed a prototype of its Borg Cube ATX Limited Collector's Edition computer in July 2019 , [55] and the final version reached retail in January 2020 . [56] Smaller ITX builds of this cube debuted in June 2020 . In 2021, the company displayed a prototype for its forthcoming computerized Star Trek: Picard Borg Cube Record Player . [57]

In June 2019 , Eaglemoss/Hero Collector 's project manager Ben Robinson reconfirmed that the company would manufacture starship miniatures from the series, and later indicated that they would be about 150 to 250 mm in length, similar to ships from its DIS starships partwork . The first four sets of CG starship assets were received from the production in March 2020 , and the first products, models of La Sirena , the USS Zheng He , Fenris Ranger vessel , and the Romulan Bird-of-Prey were scheduled. [58] In October 2020 , the company announced that its forthcoming PIC starship line would be combined with ships from Star Trek: Discovery (after the release of issue 33 of the DIS collection) and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds into a new partwork , which was subsequently named the Star Trek Universe: The Official Starships Collection and debuted in March 2021 . [59] Robinson added, " We've got 9 or 10 Picard ships followed by the Disco season 3 fleet. " [60]

In June 2021, Eaglemoss released its first, larger XL Edition model of a "hero ship" from PIC within its Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection . Three starship classes from the series are also covered in the second edition of the company's Star Trek: Shipyards - Starfleet Ships 2294 to the Future reference book . [61]

Hallmark has scheduled the release of its La Sirena Christmas ornament for October 2021 . [62]

On 13 July 2021 , ViacomCBS Consumer Products and Playmates Toys jointly announced that the latter had acquired new licensing for " action figures, vehicles and ships, role play and other toy categories ", and slated the first of these products for retail release in 2022. Among other Star Trek series and films, this licensing encompasses Star Trek: Picard , Star Trek: Discovery , Star Trek: Lower Decks , and Star Trek: Prodigy . [63]

How Picard Season 3 Finally Broke a Classic Star Trek “Mandate”

The New Next Generation is here.

Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine in 'Star Trek: Picard' Season 3.

It’s hard to believe, but 30 years ago, as The Next Generation began its seventh and final season, there were still vocal Trekkie haters who claimed the show wasn’t really Star Trek. How times change. What was once the “new” Star Trek — a 1987 sequel to a 1960s sci-fi series — is now retro.

In 2023, Picard Season 3 is the second coming of The Next Generation. But, according to the people who made it, this season isn’t just about looking back. The callbacks may be tied to the ‘90s, but for showrunner Terry Matalas, his cast, and crew, this season is all about pushing the franchise into a brave new style of Star Trek storytelling.

Launched in 2020 , Star Trek: Picard sought to tell ruminative down-to-Earth stories about the struggles and further adventures of a much older version of Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart). Often called the Star Trek version of Logan , the tone of Picard has always been more earnest and darker than in The Next Generation. Despite its merits — including nuanced writing from Pulitzer-Prize-winning novelist Michael Chabon — aspects of Season 1 rubbed fans the wrong way. And while most hardcore fans loved the new Stargazer in Season 2, there’s debate on whether or not that season stuck the landing.

But now, it seems with Picard , the third time’s the charm. The advance buzz for Season 3 is overwhelmingly positive, with all critics noting there’s a pretty big tonal shift here. But how did it happen?

A new Picard story

Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes and Jeri Ryan in 'Picard' Season 3.

Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, and Jeri Ryan in 'Picard' Season 3.

“This season came to me very fast,” showrunner Terry Matalas tells Inverse . “I knew what all the big moves are and I had to sell it to Patrick [Stewart], to Secret Hideout, and to Paramount+ very quickly.” Matalas joined the Picard creative team after Season 1, and the tonal and aesthetic differences with Season 3 are all the result of his vision. Before joining Picard , and before helming the SyFy reboot of 12 Monkeys , Matalas was a production assistant on Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Enterprise . His nerd street cred is clear.

Although series star Patrick Stewart had initially been resistant to bringing back too many TNG characters just for the sake of it, Matalas won him over with the overall pitch for the season. Johnathan Frakes, who returns as Riker, and directs two episodes this season, was there when Matalas outlined his vision to Captain Picard himself.

“Before we started, Terry had lunch with me and Patrick [Stewart], and was very upfront about what he wanted to do,” Frakes says. “He asked if Patrick was cool with it, and Patrick was all in.”

In Picard Season 3, the stakes are bigger, and the tone is closer to classic Star Trek feature films. “We wanted this season to be something monumental for this crew,” Matalas reveals. “It had to feel big, the same way The Undiscovered Country was for the original crew. The stakes have to be high because this is the last go at it.”

By now, most fans know that all seven cast members from The Next Generation are reunited in this season, along with a few secret surprises from the ‘90s Trek yet to be revealed. But, for the returning cast, there was a big difference between Picard Season 3, and the heyday of The Next Generation . In the ‘90s, the crew of the Enterprise didn’t argue with each other. In Picard Season 3, conflict is everywhere.

“In the original Next Gen the mandate was no conflict among the main bridge crew,” LeVar Burton says. “And that was tricky and unnatural. So, this was delicious to play, it was great fun.”

Because the show is still called Picard , you can easily guess which character Geordi La Forge (Burton) finds himself in conflict with. But he’s not the only one. Jean-Luc’s reunion with Beverly Crusher is also brimming with down-to-Earth conflict. For McFadden, the material in this season was bigger than anything she was ever able to do on TNG .

“I wish we'd had more scenes like this earlier on,” she says. “It was fantastic because Patrick and I are both theatre actors. So, it’s wonderful to just have a scene where you can really go for it.”

Stewart agrees with McFadden and notes that part of why he even agreed to do Picard at all, was because of the tonal difference of the series. “Some experiences that these characters have had, some are good. Some are not so good,” Stewart reveals reflectively. “And that had a strong effect on me and made it possible for me to sometimes sink a bit low in mood and temperament. I think it’s closer to real life.”

A new Star Trek ship, a new crew

While the final season of Picard creates an exciting story that allows The Next Generation cast to shine in bold new ways, it’s not only about the old gang. Raffi (Michelle Hurd) and Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) — who appeared in the two previous seasons of Picard — return here. And through these characters, the future of Star Trek beyond this moment might be glimpsed. Seven, of course, originated on Star Trek: Voyager , but her arc in Picard has turned her into a much more well-rounded character. And this time out, she’s finally in Starfleet, the first officer on the USS Titan , and constantly sparring with Captain Liam Shaw, played by Todd Stashwick, probably famous to sci-fi fans for his role in the TV version of 12 Monkeys.

Todd Stashwick as Captain Liam Shaw in 'Picard' Season 3.

Todd Stashwick as Captain Liam Shaw.

In the first episode, fans will notice that Shaw and Seven don’t get along. Like, at all . But Stashwick says this isn’t a mistake. It’s by design. “When choosing a first officer, you don't want someone who agrees with you,” he explains. “You want to have a dissenting opinion. You want to have someone who is the things you aren't.”

The Titan bridge is rounded out by several newcomers, too, perhaps most notably, Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut as Sidney La Forge, one of the daughters of Geordi La Forge, who is the helmsman of the new USS Titan . Chestnut tells Inverse she decided to create a consistent way to control the Titan , by repeating certain patterns with her hands. “There’s a method to my madness if you look closely at my hands!” she says with a laugh. Sidney’s journey is also bigger than it might seem. But, detailing too much about her character, or, for that matter, Ed Speleers' new role, might be a spoiler. For now, let’s just say, there are plenty of new Starfleet heroes in Picard Season 3.

The future of 25th-Century Star Trek

Whether or not Star Trek: Picard Season 3 leads to a new season of a different Star Trek series remains to be seen. For now, this is the ending of this series and the ending of the story of The Next Generation crew. And the feeling will remind fans of the 1987-2005 era of Star Trek. But, Picard Season 3 is also a contemporary television show, and that means massive twists are coming, and the drama won’t unfold in the style of ‘90s Trek.

“I’m really interested in telling human stories,” Matalas says. “In terms of television, one influence on me is very much Ron Moore’s Battlestar. I like those situations where everybody's right and everybody's wrong. It’s really great dramatic territory.” Matalas explains his views on how to write effective twists and mystery boxes slightly differently than other showrunners in the business: “There is a practice in some writers' rooms that, if the audience can guess what you're doing, don't do it. And I don't subscribe to that. You have to accept the fact that the audience may guess what's going on, but they have to like it, too.”

Matalas is quick to point out he didn’t write the season by himself. He reteamed with two of his 12 Monkeys collaborators, Sean Terretta and Chris Monfette, and sings the praises of the other Picard writers, Cindy Appel, Jane Maggs, and Matt Okumura. “I had a tremendously brilliant writing staff. They worked really hard under difficult time constraints and a lot of pressure. And they shined through it all.”

Will team Matalas continue to tell stories set in the 25th Century era of Star Trek? The showrunner reveals that when one fan told him that this felt like the “beginning of the Terry Matalas era of Star Trek,” at first, he “winced.” At first.

“But, then, after I thought about it, I understood what they meant,” he says. “There is a different kind of tone here that blends a lot of different kinds of storytelling. I just hope people respond to it.”

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 debuts on Paramount+ on February 16, 2023. It will consist of 10 episodes.

Stewart was joined on-stage by series stars Jeri Ryan and Michelle Hurd.

In Star Trek: Picard, Stewart reprises his iconic role as Jean-Luc Picard, which he played for seven seasons on Star Trek: The Next Generation, and follows the character into the next chapter of his life. Along with Stewart, Ryan and Hurd, LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis and Brent Spiner also star.

The series is produced by CBS Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. For season three, Alex Kurtzman, Akiva Goldsman, Terry Matalas, Patrick Stewart, Heather Kadin, Aaron Baiers, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Doug Aarniokoski and Dylan Massin serve as executive producers. Terry Matalas serves as showrunner for season three.

Following the series premiere on February 16, new episodes of the 10-episode final season will be available to stream weekly on Thursdays. Seasons 1 and 2 are currently streaming on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Picard —Everything You Need to Know to Prepare

By Joanna Robinson

Image may contain Human Person Sitting Bar Counter Pub Wood and Restaurant

In the age of near-constant reboots, remakes, and legacy sequels, here comes another one in the form of Star Trek: Picard , which premieres January 23 on CBS All Access. The show follows Patrick Stewart’s enormously popular Starfleet captain turned admiral turned winemaker Jean-Luc Picard who originally starred in the TV series Star Trek: The Next Generation from 1987 to 1994 and was last seen in the 2002 film Star Trek: Nemesis . Stewart’s Picard will return for 10 new episodes, followed by an already announced second season.

Unlike some properties, Star Trek: Picard isn’t hamstrung by leaning too hard on the past. The all-new ragtag crew—including salty former intelligence officer Raffi ( Michelle Hurd ), rakish pilot Cristobal “Chris” Rios ( Santiago Cabrera ), anxious yet brilliant scientist Agnes Jurati ( Alison Pill ), and skilled Romulan fighter Elnor ( Evan Evagora )—allow newcomers to the franchise a fresh start and easy-access to new adventures. The pilot episode also features some very handy exposition and recapping of previous events. Still, this is a show that hopes to please old, loyal fans as well, so a quick recap of some of the elements that crop up in Picard shouldn’t hurt, should it?

Here are the basic who, what, where, when, and why to expect from Star Trek: Picard .

France: The series opens with Jean-Luc Picard deep into his retirement from Starfleet and holed up on the family vineyard in France. Fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation will recall that after a harrowing encounter with the Borg (more on that in a bit), Picard returned home in the season four episode titled “Family.” It’s not the only episode featuring the vineyard, but it focuses on Picard connecting with his older brother and, more importantly, his own humanity. Not to put too fine a point on it, but the vineyard is a way for Picard to feel his earthly roots. So it should come as no surprise that this is where he would find himself after leaving his career behind.

San Francisco: The premise of Star Trek sees our heroes boldly going to the furthest reaches of the galaxy, but the fictional Starfleet has its roots in the U.S. Navy and so the show’s creator, Gene Roddenberry, chose a real naval town, San Francisco, as the home of Starfleet Command. (In actuality, Command appears to be positioned in Marin County—across the bay from San Francisco—but let’s not split hairs.) More recent Star Trek properties like 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness have spent plenty of time in fictional futuristic buildings in and around the very real Golden Gate Bridge, so don’t be surprised when you see it pop up in Picard .

Whose Timeline Is It Anyway?: In order to unshackle itself from the continuity of other Star Trek properties, the recent film franchise launched by J.J. Abrams in 2009 saw Captain James T. Kirk and friends thrown into an alternative timeline from the original series. The 2017 CBS All Access series Star Trek: Discovery has also played with alternative timelines. But Star Trek: Picard is very much set in the universe fans have come to know and love and follows directly from the events of the final filmed Picard story, Star Trek: Nemesis , which saw Brent Spiner ’s android character Data sacrifice himself to save Picard. (More on Data in a bit.) But—and here’s where it gets mildly complicated— Star Trek: Picard also draws from the Abrams films.

You may or may not remember that in 2009’s Star Trek , Leonard Nimoy’s Mr. Spock traveled back in time from a future where a supernova destroyed the planet of Romulus. That time travel is what helps start the fractured Abrams timeline, but that initial supernova and the destruction of Romulus? Still very much a thing in Star Trek: Picard and a huge aspect of the show’s premise.

The Romulans: Okay, let’s talk about the Romulans, shall we? They are the main antagonists of Star Trek: Picard and, here’s a very tricky thing to remember, virtually indistinguishable from the angle-eyebrowed, pointy-eared Vulcans. According to Trek lore, the logical Vulcans and the violent Romulans were originally the same race. Once upon a time, Star Trek used to distinguish the two by giving Romulans some bumpy bits on their brows and easily identifiable big-shouldered uniforms. Those days, alas, are over—as are the signature bowl cuts that marked both Vulcans and Romulans.

The good news, however, is that if you see someone with angled eyebrows and pointy ears in Star Trek: Picard , like Harry Treadaway’s Narek, they are almost certainly Romulan. Spock’s cool, detached Vulcan brethren are barely around. In the wake of the destruction of their home planet, there are some Romulans who are clearly grateful to Earth for some manner of refuge and want to live, peaceably, among the humans. But, for the most part, Romulans are very anti-human and anti-Earth. Same as it ever was. So be on the lookout for those ears and eyebrows, know they may be friend or foe. Above all else, pay close attention to who identifies as Romulan and who identifies as Vulcan.

The Borg: Though the Romulans have been popular antagonists throughout the whole of Star Trek , probably the most famous race of threatening aliens in Picard’s The Next Generation adventures were the pasty, black-armored Borg. These are cybernetic creatures, not unlike the Cybermen of Doctor Who , who want nothing more than to conquer and assimilate every culture they encounter. Their captives become part of the Borg “Hive” called “the Collective,” which thinks and acts as one. You may be familiar with their favorite slogan: “Resistance is Futile.” Their spaceships are famously cube-shaped.

In the Next Generation season three and four two-parter, “The Best of Both Worlds,” the Borg captured Picard and turned him into one of their own: a creature known as Locutus of Borg. This was an incredibly traumatic experience for poor Jean-Luc and briefly turned the famously open-minded man into an anti-Borg bigot. Not that we blame him. But Next Generation —and, more directly, Star Trek: Voyager after it—spent time examining what would happen to members freed from the Borg collective. How does one reclaim his or her individuality? Both Next Generation ’s Hugh ( Jonathan Del Arco ) from the season five episode “I, Borg” and Voyager’s former Borg Seven of Nine ( Jerri Ryan ) have roles to play in Star Trek: Picard .

Data, Androids, and “The Measure of a Man”: Just as Next Generation’s use of the Borg sparked debates about humanity, individuality, and which creatures deserve their own dignity and our respect, the show’s treatment of Spiner’s Data provides the backbone for the show. Data and his evil twin brother, Lore (Spiner), were created by Doctor Noonien Soong (also Spiner) and were synthetic creatures with highly advanced artificial intelligence. It was Data’s ongoing quest in Next Generation to become human and Picard’s sympathetic treatment of that desire that make up what many consider to be the show’s first great episode: season two’s “The Measure of a Man.” In that episode, Picard must defend Data’s right to his own autonomy against an eager cybernetic scientist Bruce Maddox ( Brian Brophy ) from the Daystrom Institute, who wanted to take Data apart and figure out what made him tick. Though Maddox lost the case, he and Data remained in touch and become friendly. Maddox, Daystrom, twins, and the rights of androids. Got all that? Good.

Data’s pursuit of humanity and this idea of androids with emotions was the strongest thread that stretched across all of Picard and crew’s adventures. It’s a very popular notion in sci-fi, generally, with Battlestar Galactica , Blade Runner , and more all toying with the same questions. If you have limitless time, there are a number of Data episodes worth revisiting including “Datalore,” “The Offspring,” “Brothers,” and “The Descent” part one and two. In the Nemesis film, Data discovers a more primitive version of himself called, imaginatively, B-4, and copies some of his core memories into that body before he dies.

Why?: So why is CBS All Access making this particular Star Trek show now? The easy answer is nostalgia. In addition to Stewart, Spiner, and Ryan, a number of other beloved members of the Star Trek family will have a chance to appear in Picard , including Jonathan Frakes as William Riker, Marina Sirtis as his wife, Deanna Troi, and, joining in season two , Whoopi Goldberg as Guinan.

But there has to be more than just familiar IP driving the show, and what’s clear from the first three episodes is that Star Trek: Picard is invested in not only bringing us the comforting familiarity of Stewart’s kind, wise, brave, intellectual Jean-Luc Picard, but using Star Trek the way it’s always been meant to be used: as a sometimes thinly veiled metaphor for our current questions about race, gender, authoritarian governments, and the triumphs of compassion. In other words, it’s an enormously comforting and aspirational story. In Picard we find the kind of steady leadership we could all use right now.

Michael dorn wanted armin shimerman to play the ferengi worf kills in star trek: picard [updated].

Worf killed Sneed the Ferengi in Star Trek: Picard season 3, but Armin Shimerman says Michael Dorn suggested he play the Ferengi Worf slays.

TrekMovie.com verified with Armin Shimerman and Kitty Swink that Michael Dorn wanted Armin to play the Ferengi Worf kills in Star Trek: Picard season 3, not have Worf kill Quark specifically . TrekMovie 's article is here . Screen Rant 's original article erroneously interpreting Worf kills Quark is below.

  • Michael Dorn wanted to kill Quark, not Sneed, in Star Trek: Picard season 3, but Armin Shimerman shut down the idea.
  • Michael and Armin are friends in real life, making the request to kill Quark surprising to him.
  • Listen to TrekMovie's All Access Star Trek podcast to hear more from Shimerman, Kitty Swink, and Jonathan Frakes about this funny Trek tidbit.

Captain Worf (Michael Dorn) killed the Ferengi named Sneed (Aaron Stanford) in Star Trek: Picard season 3, but Armin Shimerman says it was Quark who Dorn wanted to kill instead. Dorn and Shimerman starred together in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine seasons 4-7. Although the Klingon warrior never liked the Ferengi bartender, in real life, Michael is good friends with Armin and his wife, Kitty Swink - which is why Dorn's request for Worf to murder Quark caught Shimerman off guard.

Appearing on TrekMovie 's All Access Star Trek podcast to promote Trek Against Pancreatic Cancer 's fundraising and walk at PanCAN PurpleStride, Armin Shimerman, Kitty Swink, and Jonathan Frakes (joined by Juan Carlos Coto), Kitty asked Armin to recount the story of Michael Dorn requesting Worf kill Quark in Star Trek: Picard season 3. Read their quotes and listen to the clip on TrekMovie 's X post below:

Armin Shimerman: Dorn called me up and said, ‘I’m doing an episode of Picard where I kill off a Ferengi. Wouldn’t it be great if it were you?’ I said no, it would not be great. I told him just to forget about that idea altogether. Kitty Swink: I gotta say, for all the times I’ve baked bread for Michael Dorn, that was really a sh****y thing for him to say. (laughs) Jonathan Frakes: I’m not sure he knew he was gonna cut his head off. Armin Shimerman: He knew that, he knew that. Because that’s what he said to me. Jonathan Frakes: But that Ferengi was based on on your Ferengi, and the tightrope you walked, all levity aside, to represent what Roddenberry thought was this despicable capitalist pig with huge ears, and yet be humorous, smart, charming, clever… all the qualities that Quark had and still be essentially a villain, and do it through rubber… It takes a special actor, which you are.

Exploring a Unique Dynamic: Jennifer Hetrick’s Vash in a Potential Love Triangle with Q and Picard on Star Trek TNG

T here was an intriguing concept once floated around the offices of “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” which involved a potential love triangle. The show’s producer, Michael Piller, reminisces about the rerun days when TV Guide, a primary source for television programming, regularly featured the show’s episodes in their Close-Ups highlight section. One episode that consistently caught the eye of TV Guide was “Qpid,” often flagged for rerun viewership.

“Every time it’s in TV Guide this episode gets a Close-Up. […] I’m not sure why. I just think we came up with the idea of a love triangle between Q, Picard, and Vash, and to bring her and Q together, which I thought was a great premise. But we couldn’t lick it. It came together in a meeting with Ira Behr, who had created Vash […]”

The concept for this love triangle was a brainteaser for the creators. Ira Stephen Behr, a producer and writer on TNG, was instrumental in developing this story. Though his contributions to TNG were significant, Behr left “Next Generation” after feeling constrained creatively. Despite this, he maintained a positive relationship with the franchise, later becoming the head showrunner for “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” where he continued his prolific contributions with 53 episode scripts.

While “Qpid” featured both Vash (played by Jennifer Hetrick) and Q, the love triangle did not fully manifest. As Piller recounts, it was Brannon Braga, a staff writer, who suggested the Sherwood Forest scenario that made it into the final script.

FAQ – Potential Love Triangle in Star Trek TNG

Which characters were supposed to be involved in the love triangle on star trek tng.

The intended love triangle was to involve Q, Captain Jean-Luc Picard, and the character Vash, who was portrayed by actress Jennifer Hetrick.

Why didn’t the love triangle between Q, Picard, and Vash fully develop on the show?

According to Michael Piller, although they liked the idea of a love triangle, the creative team wasn’t able to “lick it,” meaning they couldn’t quite figure out how to make the concept work effectively within an episode.

Who came up with the concept for the Sherwood Forest scenario in the episode “Qpid”?

Staff writer Brannon Braga was the one who suggested the Robin Hood-themed Sherwood Forest angle for the episode “Qpid.”

Did Ira Behr continue to work on Star Trek after leaving the Next Generation?

Yes, Ira Behr transitioned to become the head showrunner of “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” following his departure from “Next Generation.”

What was the TV Guide’s Close-Up section?

TV Guide’s Close-Up section highlighted notable TV episodes for the week and often mentioned TNG reruns, specifically the episode “Qpid.”

The notion of featuring Jennifer Hetrick’s Vash within a complicated dynamic involving Q and Captain Picard is an intriguing one that never fully came to fruition on “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” These behind-the-scenes insights into vast creativity and collaboration highlight the complexities involved in producing a beloved series like TNG. While some ideas may not reach the screens, their stories resonate with fans, keeping the Star Trek universe ever-expanding and fascinating. The episode “Qpid,” although lacking the envisioned love triangle, remains a testament to the collective imagination and storytelling prowess of the show’s writers and producers.

Lower decks' cancelation: is star trek is afraid to bodly go to new frontiers.

star trek picard staff

With the rise of adult animation, such as Rick and Morty , on streaming services, it may surprise many Star Trek fans that their adult animated show has been canceled by Paramount +.

However, there is some good news about the show.

Season 5 will still be released, the show's final season.

Hero Image Star Trek Lower Decks - Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4 Episode 9

Many fans of the show and Star Trek fans do not understand why Paramount + has decided to cancel the show as the Star Trek universe seems to be on the rise.

We'll explore why.

Star Trek: Lower Decks Red Shirts Season 4 Episode 7

What is Star Treks: Lower Decks Animated Show?

Before we examine why the Star Trek: Lower Decks animated show was canceled, let's talk about what it is about and how it fits into the whole Star Trek lore.

Star Trek: Lower Decks takes place in the year 2380, around ten years after the Next Generation series ended in the Star Trek universe.

It's named after one of the episodes from Star Trek: The Next Generation and focuses on one of Starfleet's least essential starships, the USS Cerritos.

The USS Cerritos was a 24th-century Federation starship that was a second contact and support ship. Captain Carol Freeman (Daenn Lewis) was the ship's captain.

Giving The Side Eye - Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4 Episode 10

Star Trek: Lower Decks focuses on the support crew of the USS Cerritos.

There is Ensign Marniner (Tawny Newsome), Ensign Brad Boilmer ( Jack Quaid ), and Engisn Tendi (Noel Wells).

The show follows the crew as they deal with anomalies and situations but with more adult humor.

It also has well-known Star Trek actors such as George Takei, Wil Wheaton, Marina Sirtis, and Jonathan Frakes .

Star Trek: Lower Decks Briefing Scene Season 4 Episode 7

There are also other quite famous guest stars and recurring voice actors who join the list of characters on the deck of the USS Cerritos throughout the show.

Why Was 'Star Trek: Lower Decks' Canceled?

Even with the star-studded list of voice actors and guest stars lending their voices to the show, Paramount+ will cancel it after the next season.

This cancelation from Paramount+ may follow the trend of networks and streaming services canceling adult-themed cartoons for various reasons.

Fighting off the Tremble Lizards in Star Trek Lower Decks - Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4 Episode 9

Adult animations or adult-themed cartoons used to be edgy with witty and adult-geared humor that distanced themselves from kid cartoons .

These shows presented more opportunities for more imagination with fewer budget restrictions.

For example, an entire armada space battle is far easier to animate than produce with live-action.

So, why was it canceled?

Hanging out with Genesis Device - Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4 Episode 10

If you look closely at the animation style of these shows, such as Lower Decks, Inside Job, Solar Opposites, and Hoops, they all copy or are influenced by Adult Swim's Rick and Morty Show.

This may be because studios know fans are familiar with the art style, and clearly, it's a popular option.

You can also see this trend in other successful adult cartoons that copy the Simpsons, like Family Guy and American Dad.

The reason for cancelation for the cancellation also encompasses these other tender points.

Firstly, Star Trek: Lower Decks is a departure from other Trek shows of the past, which were monologue-heavy and had serious tones, like Deep Space Nine.

This animated show is more slapstick, like Rick and Morty.

Secondly, much of the fan base is older. With Star Trek being a legacy brand, its fan base is primarily adults who had difficulty connecting with the show's ADHD-esque presentation.

The animated series didn't grab critics attention like other shows, even though the reviews it did receive were good. It has a 92% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

However, lackluster viewing times and a fan base who were not ready for this new Star Trek show surely helped along its cancellation.

Nova Fleet Lower Decks - Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4 Episode 10

Star Treks: Lower Decks was a big step forward for the franchise to tread some new ground -- a step that Paramount+ and Star Trek fans didn't want to take.

Star Trek's Future in Animation

It is not all doom and gloom regarding Paramount+ and animated shows.

The studio may be afraid to continue its adult-style animated show, but it has a second animated Star Trek show on Netflix.

Sisterly Aggression on Lower Decks - Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4 Episode 10

The show is called Star Trek: Prodigy and is meant for kids. This may be great for some older fans, but it can feel slightly weird watching children-themed shows as the storylines are very basic and very much for kids.

Even Star Trek: Prodigy, which started on Nickelodeon, had a tough time finding its footing before its move to Netflix.

You can not fault Paramount+ for taking the risk of making an adult-themed Star Trek show.

But it is safe to say the Star Trek universe is in safe hands with the current set of heavy-hitting albeit live-action shows such as the now-completed Picard series, Strange New Worlds, and the upcoming Starfleet Academy show.

Star Trek: Lower Decks Drinking Scene Season 4 Episode 8

But it would be nice to get a new, more mature, animated Star Trek show to enjoy. It doesn't need to be a show about vulgar topics; it just needs to have a bit more mature and adult comedy in it.

So whether you are upset or not about the cancelation of Star Trek: Lower Decks animated series, it can also allow other new Star Trek shows to come out.

Plus, who knows if Paramount+ may bring back the show if it sees a demand.

What do you think? Was the streamer right to cancel Lower Decks?

Coffee Table Book On The ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Makeup Artistry Of Glenn Hetrick Coming In September

It’s amazing how many LGBT people are on Star Trek now. Love it.

Yeah, but unfortunately, the cover is missing the very first one: Jadzia Dax.

The cover is “missing” a character that doesn’t seem to be appearing in the comic? I don’t think it’s a problem NOT to falsely advertise her appearance. I’m hopeful they’ll do more of these in the future and include her.

Great art all around! Looking forward to it.

I know I shouldn’t be objectifying shirtless cartoon Sulu, but holy.

Yeah, they made him look ripped.

George looked like that in the original ep ‘naked time’

One can appreciate without objectification. We know he’s a upstanding officer and husband, he can be fit as well ;)

Happy birthday to O G ‘hikaru sulu’

So excited for this I preordered the regular cover and the variant with Mariner and Jennifer ! I hope they do this again next year. I love the DC Pride collection that comes out every year and the Star Wars Pride covers… Love to see Trek continue to expand this kind of anthology and include more characters as well (like Jadzia Dax.)

Remembering John G. Trimble

StarTrek.com honors the luminary whose contributions saved the Star Trek universe.

John Trimble attends the Star Trek: Discovery Season 1 red carpet premiere and flashes the Vulcan salute

Mark Davis/StarTrek.com

StarTrek.com is saddened to report the passing of John G. Trimble, who passed away the morning of April 19, 2024, as confirmed by his daughter Lora Boem in a post .

Star Trek and fandom as we know it all stems from the efforts and passion of John and his wife Bjo Trimble , the couple who launched a grassroots letter writing campaign to Save Star Trek following NBC’s cancellation of the Original Series, resulting in a third season. With enough episodes then, Star Trek was able to enter syndication, propelling it into a phenomenon that warranted an animated series in 1973 and big-budget feature in 1979.

John and Bjo Trimble, in 2016, were brought on stage at Star Trek Las Vegas in celebration of the 50th anniversary, and the Star Trek franchise team surprised and honored them with a painted portrait of them by artist JK Woodward.

For the 50th anniversary celebration at Star Trek Last Vegas, John Van Citters invites Bjo and John Trimble to recognize their efforts and present them with a painted portrait from artist JK Woodward

StarTrek.com

Recalling their efforts after a visit to the Original Series set , following the 50th anniversary honor, John Trimble told StarTrek.com, "When we saw the change in the cast and crew during the filming of 'The Deadly Years' from what it had been before, we knew something was going on. It had been a very up cast and crew, and now it was very down, the mood. We found out by going to craft services, the underground gossip source, that they were probably going to cancel the show after the second season. We had to leave and go back to Oakland, where we lived at the time, and on the way, we were talking about what a change it had been in the cast. I turned to Bjo and I said, 'There ought to be something we can do about that,' knowing full well that that was throwing down the challenge."

The couple immediately sprang into action. John Trimble added, "We spent the rest of the trip going up the Central Valley, before Interstate 5, back to Oakland, discussing how to do it and putting together the Save Star Trek campaign."

Bjo Trimble credited John for building out the framework of their grassroots campaign, "We knew, of course, we were going to have to both mail letters. John went down to the post office, learned all about mail rules, and brand new was the zip code system. They told us, flat out, that if material wasn't zip coded it wouldn't go out as bulk mail, that it would just sit in the post office. John got all the books in those days, and it was stacks of them, and learned about the zip code rules. And we came home and put those into effect when we mailed out letters. John was downstairs with a hand-cranked mimeograph machine, turning out the letters, which we still have a copy or two. We folded them, labeled them and stamped them, and put them in bulk mail. He was doing a whole bunch of the physical work, the grunt work. I was more getting people over to help us. It was actually wonderful. We would work the volunteers hard all weekend. John was everywhere; he was the one who ran the errands. He's the one who lifted, toted, and basically it simply was not possible for me to do it alone. This is why we're a pair."

The decades following their legendary writing campaign, John and Bjo Trimble remained ambassadors for science fiction, the space program, and the Society of Creative Anachronism. The pair continued to attend Star Trek premiere and events, meeting fellow fans and sharing their enthusiasm for each new iteration of Star Trek and generation of fandom, including last year’s Star Trek: Picard Season 3 red carpet premiere in Hollywood, CA.

The entire Star Trek family sends their condolences to Trimble’s family, friends, and loved ones around the world.
