Visitors can experience the edible landscape southeast of the city via the self-guided, and family-friendly, Circle Farm Tour through four communities in the Fraser Valley. About British Columbia

In Canada’s westernmost province, fresh local bounty, talented chefs, and a melting pot of cultures combine to make British Columbia a top culinary destination. It’s a rich tapestry supported by farmers, growers, and producers whose ingredients shape menus in communities along the Pacific Ocean, in the Rocky Mountains, and everywhere in between.

Here, Indigenous cultures who have been nurturing the land for millennia showcase traditional offerings with a modern twist. Other multicultural influences inspire chefs and artisan food producers to blend local ingredients with global flavours. Dishes also vary widely, depending on place, creating distinctive regional dining scenes—from wild salmon sushi in Tofino to down-home guest ranch cooking in the Cariboo to delicate dim sum in Richmond.  Victoria, the province’s capital, boasts more restaurants per capita than almost anywhere else in Canada, while Vancouver, BC’s most populous city, was recently recognized with several MICHELIN Stars, further elevating the city’s reputation as an international dining destination. Wine touring, spirits, and local beer are hugely popular here, too, in the Fraser Valley near Vancouver, on Vancouver Island, and especially along the Okanagan Valley lakeside, where seasonal pours provide the perfect finish to a day of hiking, biking, and swimming.

What is a Circle Farm Tour?

If you’re looking for a comprehensive resource to the abundant agriculture of the Fraser Valley region of British Columbia, Canada, a Circle Farm Tour is the perfect choice. These self-guided tours take you on a journey through the countryside. Here you’ll discover a wide range of agri-tourism destinations, farm-gate vendors, open-air markets, and eateries.

History of Circle Farm Tours

The Circle Farm Tour concept was first developed in 2003 by the British Columbia Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries. The goal was to create a series of self-guided tours that would showcase the region’s agricultural heritage and promote local food producers. Today, there are several Circle Farm Tours throughout the province, each with its own unique itinerary.

Concept and Experience

The Circle Farm Tour experience is all about immersing yourself in the local culture and getting to know the people who produce the food you eat. Each tour is designed to highlight the best of the region’s agricultural offerings, from fresh produce and artisanal cheeses to wine and craft beer.

When you take a Circle Farm Tour, you’ll receive a brochure and map for the participating community. This will guide you to a variety of specialty farm-gate vendors, open-air markets, charming eateries, heritage sites, fairs, and other special events. You’ll travel in your own car, at your own pace, and stop wherever and whenever you like.

One of the best things about a Circle Farm Tour is that it’s a great way to support local farmers and food producers. By buying directly from the source, you’ll get the freshest, highest-quality products while also supporting the local economy.

Overall, a Circle Farm Tour is a fun and delicious way to explore the Fraser Valley region. Whether you’re a foodie, a history buff, or just looking for a unique adventure, there’s something for everyone on these self-guided tours.

Planning Your Circle Farm Tour

When planning your Circle Farm Tour, it’s important to consider your interests and preferences. With so many destinations to choose from, it can be overwhelming to decide where to go and what to do. In this section, we’ll provide some tips to help you plan your perfect tour.

Selecting Your Destinations

The Circle Farm Tour features a variety of destinations, including farms, wineries, breweries, markets, and heritage sites. To help you choose your destinations, we recommend visiting the official Circle Farm Tour website and exploring the different communities and attractions. Each community has its own brochure and map, which you can download and print or pick up at a local visitor center.

When selecting your destinations, consider your interests and preferences. Do you enjoy wine tasting? Are you interested in learning about farming practices? Do you want to try local cuisine? By answering these questions, you can narrow down your options and create an itinerary that suits your needs.

Creating a Culinary Itinerary

One of the best ways to experience the Circle Farm Tour is by creating a culinary itinerary. This type of itinerary focuses on food and drink, and can include visits to wineries, breweries, and local restaurants. To create a culinary itinerary, we recommend following these steps:

  • Research local restaurants and cafes that use ingredients from Circle Farm Tour partners. You can find a list of partners on the official Circle Farm Tour website.
  • Choose a few wineries and breweries to visit. Consider selecting ones that offer food pairings or have a restaurant on site.
  • Plan your meals and snacks around your visits to these destinations. For example, you could have breakfast at a local cafe, visit a winery for a mid-morning tasting, have lunch at a restaurant that uses local ingredients, and finish the day with a brewery tour and tasting.

By creating a culinary itinerary, you can experience the best of the Circle Farm Tour while satisfying your taste buds. Don’t forget to bring a cooler and some reusable bags to take home some of the delicious local products.

Nosh and Nibble: Food and Drink Blog

A blog that details the food, the travel, and the lifestyle that go into a terrific (or terrible) experience. Based in Vancouver, Canada

Touring #justuptheroad - a 2-day circle farm tour expedition [overview].

As a born-and-bred Vancouverite, I like to think I'm well-versed of the destinations in the 604. The most recent local experience I enjoyed was a 2-day adventure through the Fraser Valley's Circle Farm Tour , a designation of Metro Vancouver backyard businesses that support local endeavours and tourism. Over these 2 days, I learned a lot about what makes these businesses special and am sharing the goods with you today.

Disclosure: Everything in this overview was experienced complimentary and all opinions are my own.

Circle Farm Tour

Circle Farm Tour:

On this tour, we visited the following towns and businesses:

Pitt Meadows

Hopcott premium meats, harrison mills, kilby historic site, the farm house natural cheeses, harrison hot springs.

  • Morgan's Bistro
  • Harrison Beach Hotel
  • Muddy Waters Cafe
  • Duft and Co Brickhouse
  • Oldhand Coffee
  • Campbell's Gold Honey Farm and Meadery
  • Gojoy Berries

Hopcott Premium Meats was our first stop on this epic tour. Here we checked out the in-house bistro and got a behind-the-scenes look at their giant freezer. The cattle are all BC-born, grass-fed, and butchered on-site to reduce transportation and carbon costs.

circle-farm-tour-hopcott-meats-dry-aging

Another key benefit is the traceability of each animal which lends to a more confident statement of quality and adherence to a process that includes dry-aging for a few weeks prior to sale.

hopcott-meats-bbq-cheeseburger

On our way through Highway 7 into Harrison Hot Springs, we stopped by Kilby Historic Site . Here visitors can immerse themselves into an experience of olde rural BC lifestyle. There is also the main gift store if you opt out of the experience.

circle-farm-tour-kilby-historic-site

Agassiz is the gatekeeper to Harrison Hot Springs so we decided to pop by Farm House Natural Cheeses . Inside was a cool selection of cheese products crafted on-premises and outside were the source – goats!

circle-farm-tour-farm-house-natural-cheeses

This was no petting zoo, but some of the goats were genuinely curious about the humans coming to visit. The cheese here was about as local as it gets.

circle-farm-tour-farm-house-goats

Making our way into Harrison Hot Springs, we first checked into the Harrison Beach Hotel . This was a family-style hotel located along the beachfront and featured a full kitchen in addition to the usual amenities of a hotel. The mattress here was quite firm but not rock hard so it was a suitable sleep for my average back.

circle-farm-tour-harrison-beach-hotel-bed

If you plan to spend any significant time in the hotel room, getting a waterfront view is a must as the balcony has all the al fresco feeling you can want at Harrison Hot Springs.

circle-farm-tour-harrison-beach-hotel-balcony

For dinner, we stopped by Morgan's Bistro , a unique family-owned restaurant featuring the recipes of grandma and the management of her generation. For the full overview, check out my earlier post (and exclamation of love for the Fraser Valley duck) here .

morgans-bistro-duo-fraser-valley-duck

Breakfast the next morning was at the iconic Muddy Waters Cafe . Family-run and at one point staffed by five sisters, this is another beachfront eatery and a great place to spend a morning in Harrison Hot Springs if you love natural light streaming in through rooftop windows while you sip your coffee or tea. Full overview here .

muddy-waters-cafe-toasted-english-muffin

Harrison Hot Springs is a calm and tranquil community. If you're looking for some R&R close to Vancouver, this is a very day-trippable destination. Staying overnight is a bonus if you plan to disconnect without being too far away.

circle-farm-tour-harrison-hot-springs

Leaving Harrison Hot Springs, we opted for the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) for our trip back to Vancouver. We stopped in Abbotsford's historic downtown district to hit up Duft and Co. Brickhouse , a recent expansion of the ever-popular Duft and Co. Bakehouse. This casual pizza shop evolved from a finer dining establishment to fill an important niche in Abbotsford – homey pizza baked fresh to order. To characterize this pizza, it's a mix of New York and Italian styles so the bread-like pizza dough had lots of chewiness and gluten lovers like me should find this pizza a good meal.

circle-farm-tour-duft-and-co-brickhouse-food

After pizza, we stopped for coffee at Oldhand Coffee Co. Latte art was A+ on my mug. Oldhand was a quaint coffee shop with a heritage schoolhouse vibe to it with all the old photos on the wall and wide-planked wood flooring. For beans, these folks source Bows x Arrows. Way to support a local Vancouver business!

circle-farm-tour-oldhand-coffee

Afterward, we checked out a few independent boutiques in the small downtown neighbourhood. I loved the old school heritage look of the shops. Also this dog!

circle-farm-tour-abbotsford-doggo

Our last stop in Abbotsford proper was Campbell's Gold Honey Farm and Meadery . This is a unique business that educates the public on proper bee practices, sells honey products from their backyard farm, and hosts mead tasting sessions which help customers get a taste of the wide variety of meads on display. For wine lovers, this is a unique experience as most wineries are about the grapes and not honey. Even for non-wine lovers, I'd recommend the mead tasting session if you're into sweet drinks. Mead can be a great gateway into wine education.

circle-farm-tour-campbells-gold-honey-mead

The folks at Campbell's also from time-to-time host mead and honey-making workshops. A class can be a great way to gain some skills if you can't make it out to this Abbotsford farm often enough.

circle-farm-tour-campbells-gold-honey-farm-meadery

If you're concerned about the crystallization seen in some of the honey jars, rest assured that crystallization is a natural process of keeping honey fresh for longer.

The final stop of our Circle Farm Tour was at Aldergrove's Topgro Greenhouses, home of North America's only goji berry farm . Recently revealed as a superfood, goji berries are often found packaged as dried fruits in grocery stores. Gojoy berries are instead fresh and frozen, meaning you can still extract some juiciness from these unique berries.

circle-farm-tour-goji-berry-vine

Another unique feature of the farm is that during goji berry season, you can call the farm and arrange a pick-your-own session where you can fill up a bag of goji berries. Visiting the farm affords guests to learn about the history of growing an Asian-favourite berry in Canada and learning of the various nutritional benefits of including goji berries in one's diet.

circle-farm-tour-goji-berries

Final Thoughts:

As a self-guided tour, the Circle Farm Tour is an excellent way to learn about unique businesses in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. As you can see from my itinerary above, there were a ton of different stops to be had and many different eats to enjoy. I'd recommend this tour for anyone with access to a car and an eagerness in local businesses. Many of these farm owners make appearances at farmers markets but the best experience is definitely the one you get on-premises. As for me, I made sure to load up on goji berries because there is literally nowhere else you can find fresh goji berries . These are a treasure to have in the 604.

Meet the Animals Along the Circle Farm Tour in Langley, BC

the circle farm tour

Images by Michele Mateus Words by Alexis Baran

The heart of local food that brings all the greens, grains, produce, cheese and meats to our plate isn’t often in our urban centres – it’s mainly found in the people and animals who work the fields and farms. There are several places within Metro Vancouver where you can bring the kids to meet the producers and see farm animals, and a scenic place to start is Langley along the Circle Farm Tour .

At Milner Valley , a fifth-generation heritage farm, they specialize in a variety of artisan goat cheese.

There is a whole crew of adorable goats to visit on Milner Valley’s farm, who are milked to create the cheese you can buy in their shop.

All of the ogling, petting, and taking photos of the goats can get exhausting, so cool yourself with hand-made goats milk gelato, served up in the warmer months. For those sensitive to dairy, goats’ milk (and cheese) is generally easier to digest than cows’ milk, since the composition is slightly more similar to human milk. If you have a slight sensitivity with the dairy of cows, it might be worth it to give goats’ milk gelato a try.

At Kensington Prairie Farm , the alpacas roam, and if they’re close to the fence you can reach through and give them some pets right on their floofy hairdos.

Although their focus is mainly alpacas, Kensington Prairie farm also raises chickens for farm-fresh eggs, as well as cows.

All that Alpaca wool gets made into socks scarves, sweaters, and other cozy clothing. Alpaca wool is super soft, and great for retaining heat – think of all those people in the Andes who’ve relied on alpaca to keep warm for centuries. They certainly know what they’re doing.

There’s also plenty of yarn for your own knit projects.

Also on a Circle Farm Tour, Taves Family Farms has plenty of animals for the whole family to encounter, including seasonal pony rides.

Have a look at the Langley Circle Farm Tour for more stops!

Circle Farm Tour: Hazelnuts and Honeybees in the Fraser Valley

You’re joining me in-progress on the Circle Farm Tour , a self-guided agricultural odyssey in BC’s Fraser Valley.  Click here to read about the first part of my day.

Canadian Hazelnuts

The orchard was established in 1981 by a local man named Henry Wigand with an eye to establish hazelnuts in the region. He and his son fashioned much of the specialized equipment needed for processing, but he passed away just before completing his vision. Another local family, the Hanninens, bought the farm and saw it to completion. They’ve expanded it and now run the thriving farm together.

nut house sign

Even better, all the hazelnuts grown here are 100% certified organic. The Hanninen’s also share a wealth of health info about hazelnuts with their visitors. High in protein and low in saturated fats, they are showing others the myriad ways you can work the wonderful hazelnut into your diet.

bee smoker

Pulling out a honeycomb covered in slow-moving smoked out bees, Richard explained that each colony has one queen bee, about 4,000 worker bees and 2,000 drones. The worker bees are females and the drones, all males, are there just for reproducing. The queen stays in the colony all of her life, which can be about 5 – 7 years.

Richard, who got his masters degree in beekeeping at Simon Fraser, says he got started in the craft late in life but has found something he truly enjoys. This was evident when he described days spent out in the berry patches and flower fields that he brings the colonies too so that they can produce varied flavors of honey. They also “rent out” the bees to local farmers for pollination; a visit by one of his colonies can double the local blueberry harvest. He encourages me to hold one of the honeycomb frames to feel its weight (surprisingly heavy) and then to sink my finger in the soft wax and taste the oozing fresh honey. It’s like drinking water from the source – slightly warm, golden sweet, unforgettable.

finger in the honeycomb

An upper shelf lines the store filled with vintage honey tins, and Richard points out a particularly banged-up one to me. He explains that The Amazing Race came through, and this unassuming tin held the clue that teams had to find in the store. It doesn’t look like much, but it’s the only one made for honey confections, he says with a devilish grin.

He and Shirley are still grinning as they wave goodbye to us from driveway and we continue down the road. It feels like we’ve been chatting with neighbors on a Sunday afternoon.
