The Heretic [ ]

  • Thel 'Vadamee: "Noble Hierarchs , surely you understand that once the parasite attacked--"
  • (The Council members mutter angrily. 'Vadamee looks around at them.)
  • Prophet of Mercy : "There will be order in this Council!"
  • (The Prophet of Truth comes forward and raises his hand. The room falls into complete silence.)
  • Prophet of Truth: "You were right to focus your attention on the Flood. But this Demon, this ' Master Chief '..."
  • Thel 'Vadamee: "By the time I learned the Demon's intent, there was nothing I could do."
  • Prophet of Regret: (whispering to Truth) "Noble Prophet of Truth, this has gone on long enough. Make an example of this bungler, the Council demands it."
  • (Truth holds up a hand, silencing Regret.)
  • Prophet of Truth: "You are one of our most treasured instruments. Long have you led your fleet with honor and distinction. But your inability to safeguard Halo ... was a colossal failure."
  • Prophet of Objection : "Nay, it was heresy!"
  • (The Councilors yell. 'Vadamee looks back and forth between them.)
  • Thel 'Vadamee: "I will continue my campaign against the humans!"
  • Prophet of Truth: "No! You will not."
  • (as two Brutes escort Thel 'Vadamee out of the room)
  • Prophet of Truth: "Soon the Great Journey shall begin. But when it does, the weight of your heresy will stay your feet. And you shall be left behind."

The Arbiter [ ]

  • Prophet of Truth: "The Council decided to have you hung by your entrails and your corpse paraded through the city. But, ultimately, the terms of your execution are up to me."
  • Thel 'Vadamee: "I am already dead."
  • Prophet of Truth: "Indeed. Do you know where we are?"
  • Thel 'Vadamee: "The Mausoleum of the Arbiter ."
  • Prophet of Truth: "Quite so. Here rests the vanguard of the Great Journey. Every Arbiter , from first to last. Each one created and consumed in times of extraordinary crisis."
  • Prophet of Mercy: "The Taming of the Hunters , the Grunt Rebellion ... Were it not for the Arbiters, the Covenant would have broken long ago!"
  • Thel 'Vadamee: "Even on my knees I do not belong in their presence."
  • Prophet of Truth: "Halo's destruction was your error and you rightly bear the blame. But the Council was... overzealous. We know you are no heretic. This is the true face of heresy, one who would subvert our faith and incite rebellion against the High Council."
  • (Truth presses a button on his chair, and a miniature hologram of an Elite in different armor appears.)
  • Sesa 'Refumee : (hologram) "Our Prophets are false! Open your eyes, my brothers! They would use the faith of our forefathers to bring ruin to us all! The Great Journey is--"
  • (Truth cuts off the hologram.)
  • Prophet of Truth: "This heretic, and those who follow him , must be silenced."
  • Prophet of Mercy: "Their slander offends all who walk the Path."
  • Thel 'Vadamee: "What use am I? I can no longer command ships, lead troops into battle--"
  • Prophet of Truth: "Not as you are, no. But... become the Arbiter ... And you shall be set loose against this heresy with our blessing."
  • "Your haste has jeopardized the fulfillment of our Covenant and threatened our grand design. That you shall be spared a public display of our contempt is thanks only to Mercy and his wise counsel."

Sacred Icon [ ]

  • Rtas 'Vadumee: "This is unprecedented... Unacceptable."
  • Prophet of Truth: "A Hierarch is dead, Commander."
  • Rtas 'Vadumee: "His murderer was within our grasp. If you had not withdrawn our Phantoms ..."
  • Prophet of Truth: (slightly indignantly) "Are you questioning my decision?"
  • Rtas 'Vadumee: "No, holy one! I only wish to express my concern that the Brutes..."
  • Prophet of Truth: (holding up a hand for silence) " Re-commissioning the guard was a radical step, but recent events have made it abundantly clear that the Elites can no longer guarantee our safety."
  • Rtas 'Vadumee: "I shall relay... your decision... to the Council."
  • (Rtas 'Vadumee and his Elites leave. Rtas 'Vadumee nods to 'Vadamee, who returns the nod. The Prophet of Truth speaks to the Arbiter.)
  • Prophet of Truth: "Politics... (small sigh) How tiresome. Do you know, Arbiter, the Elites have threatened to resign, quit the High Council, because of this... (searching for a correct term) exchange of hats?"
  • Thel 'Vadamee: "We have always been your protectors."
  • Prophet of Truth: "These are trying times... for all of us."
  • Prophet of Mercy: "Even as the humans' annihilation filled us with satisfaction, the loss of one of the Sacred Rings wreaked our hearts with grief."
  • Prophet of Truth: "Putting aside our sorrow, we renewed our faith in the prophecy that other rings would be found. And see how our faith has been rewarded."
  • (they turn to a large view screen of Delta Halo)
  • Prophet of Mercy: " Halo ! Its divine wind will rush through the stars, propelling all who are worthy along the path to salvation."
  • Prophet of Truth: "How to start this process? For ages, we searched for one who might unlock the secrets of the ring. An Oracle. And with your help, we found it."
  • (They turn toward 343 Guilty Spark, who seems to have been suspended in a gravity beam.)
  • Prophet of Mercy: "With appropriate humility, we plied the Oracle with questions. And it, with clarity and grace, has shown us the key."
  • (triggers a hologram of the Index )
  • Prophet of Truth: "You will journey to the surface of the ring, and retrieve this Sacred Icon. With it, we shall fulfill our promise."
  • Prophet of Mercy: "Salvation for all!"
  • Prophet of Truth: "And begin the Great Journey."

Gravemind [ ]

  • Prophet of Truth: "The release of the parasite was unexpected, unfortunate. But, there is no need to panic. In truth, this is a time to rejoice. A moment that all the Covenant should savor." (raises the Index) "For the Sacred Icon has been found. With it, our path is clear, our entry into the Divine Beyond guaranteed! The Great Journey is nigh..." (a Grunt cameraman notices the Master Chief appearing out of thin air behind him) "...and nothing, not even the Flood, can stop it."
  • (The Chief looks down at the shocked Grunt.)
  • Master Chief: "Boo."
  • (The Grunt yelps, throws up his Needler, and runs. The Master Chief catches the Needler and aims it at Truth. Two Brute Honor Guards shield the Prophets with their pikes.)
  • Prophet of Truth: "Kill the Demon!"
  • (The Prophets and some Brutes escape through a gravity lift, leaving two Brutes behind.)
  • Prophet of Truth: "Fear not, my brothers! The Sacred Icon is secure. It was Tartarus and his Brutes who took the Icon from the Flood, and for that they have our thanks."
  • Prophet of Truth: "The Elites have failed to protect the Prophets, and in doing so, have put all our lives at risk. Let no warrior forget his oath , 'Thou, in faith, shall keep us safe, whilst we find the Path."
  • Prophet of Truth: "With my blessing, the Brutes now lead our fleets ! They ask for your allegiance, and you shall give it."
  • Prophet of Truth: "Be glad! A reward for all your toil and all your sacrifices in the year at hand."
  • Prophet of Truth: "At this moment, the Council is gathered on Halo, to see the Icon secured."
  • Prophet of Truth: "There are those who said this day would never come. What have they to say now?"
  • Prophet of Truth: "I have listened to the Oracle, and confirmed our deepest hope. The Great Journey begins with Halo."
  • Prophet of Truth: "Who would doubt the Prophets? What have they foretold that has not come to pass?"
  • Prophet of Truth: "The hopes of all the Covenant rest on your shoulders, Chieftain."
  • (Truth hands Tartarus the Index.)
  • Tartarus: "My faith is strong. I will not fail."
  • (Infection Forms spring up and rush them. The Brutes manage to shoot or crush most of them, but one gets through and lodges itself to Mercy's throat, knocking him off his throne. Mercy screams in agony, and Tartarus moves to remove the Infection Form.)
  • Prophet of Truth: "Let him be."
  • (Tartarus turns to Truth in surprise.)
  • Prophet of Truth: "The Great Journey waits for no one, brother. Not even you."
  • (Truth boards the Phantom and the Honor Guard Brutes follow immediately, but Tartarus hesitates at the dying Prophet of Mercy. He looks at the Index, makes his decision, and turns away from Mercy.)

High Charity [ ]

  • Prophet of Truth: "Shall we let the Flood consume our holy city? Turn High Charity into another of their wretched hives? No enemy has ever withstood our might. The Flood, too, shall fail."
  • Prophet of Truth: "The parasite did not defeat the Forerunners... and it shall not defeat us."
  • Prophet of Truth: "Whosoever is gripped by fear, take heed. I am the Prophet of Truth. ...And I am not afraid. Noble Mercy is here at my side, his wise counsel ever in my ears."
  • Prophet of Truth: "This crisis will not be the end of us. It is but one last hurdle before the journey and salvation!"
  • Prophet of Truth: "Now is the time of our unworlding, in a moment we shall all become... as gods."
  • Prophet of Truth: "If you will falter, know this... one final effort is all that remains."

The majority of the Prophet of Truth's quotes in Halo 3 are spoken through Holo-Pedestals . Only in the seventh level, The Covenant , is he seen in person.

The Prophet of Truth does not appear in any form in Sierra 117 , Floodgate , Cortana , or Halo .

Crow's Nest [ ]

  • Truth: " You are, all of you, vermin. Cowering in the dirt, thinking... what, I wonder? That you might escape the coming fire? No. Your world will burn until its surface is but glass! And not even your Demon will live to creep, blackened , from its hole to mar the reflection of our passage; the culmination of our Journey. For your destruction is the will of the gods! And I...I am their instrument!"
  • (communicating with Brutes in Crow's Nest)
  • Brute : "We have taken their command center"
  • Truth: "Have you discovered how they plan to stop me?"
  • Brute : (nervously) "Not just yet, noble Prophet."
  • Truth: "Find out what I need to know, or your place on the path is forfeit. Tell me you understand!"

Tsavo Highway [ ]

  • Truth: " The gods will not begrudge our excavation. By uncovering this relic , we add homage to their glory. When the dust settles, we will all see what I already know: here lies the Path, the start of our Great Journey ."
  • Truth: "My Dreadnought , the vessel that has so long been the focus of our worship, now rests on it's true pedestal. Even now, its engines spark greater ones below, relics long without power yet ready to fulfill their divine purpose. Stand fast! Keep our enemies at bay! Soon, my brothers, we will all have our reward!"

The Storm [ ]

  • Truth: "With my gentle encouragement, our Lords' holy relic springs to life. It is unfortunate that our enemies also bear witness to its glory. But soon their dull eyes will be closed; seared by the Rings ' unforgiving might."
  • Truth: "Take heart, my brothers! Only our enemies should fear this raging storm."
  • Truth: "Darkened skies and lashing fire are all that remains for them when we, the worthy, have passed to the beyond."
  • Thel 'Vadam: (to the pedestal) "I will not be shamed. Not again! Not by you!"

The Ark [ ]

  • Truth: "My Dreadnought cannot rise. Even now it is engaged; turn death into war for this new world . Do not relent until the heretic ships are smashed!"
  • Truth: "I opened the portal to this hallowed place, this shelter from Halo 's fire, in the hopes that more of our Covenant would join us. Alas, save for a rabble of Heretics and their Demon allies , we are all that remains on this new world. So we must temper joy and sorrow in our hearts, for those who were left behind."
  • Truth: "You must win this fight on your own. Failure will bring a fate worse than death -- abandonment as we speed forward on the journey."

The Covenant [ ]

  • Truth: "My faithful... stand firm..."
  • Truth: "Though our enemies crowd around us, we tread the blessed path! In a moment I will light the rings, and all who believe... shall be saved."
  • Johnson: (to the Brute) "That the best you got?"
  • (as the Brute begins to strangle Johnson)
  • Johnson: "Oh, come on. Impress me!"
  • Truth: "Stop, you imbecile ! He wants you to kill him." (he turns back to The Ark's console, and speaks quietly:) "I'd prefer that you did not."
  • Johnson: "What's the matter, big shot? Can't start your own party?"
  • Truth: (gets up, and walks to Johnson) "I admit, I need your help." (A Pelican appears, rapidly approaching the window behind them. It goes unnoticed.) "But that secret dies with all the rest."
  • (The Pelican crashes through the window and lands, crushing a Brute and sending his Spiker flying. Truth is knocked away from Johnson; he lands near the Spiker. A Brute Captain gets up, but is quickly blasted by Keyes ' Shotgun .)
  • Commander Keyes: "Johnson!" (ejects a shell from the shotgun) "Sound off!"
  • Johnson: "Get out of here!"
  • Keyes: "Not without you!"
  • (As Brutes surround the two, Truth speaks to Keyes:)
  • Truth: "You delay the inevitable. One of you will light the rings."
  • (Keyes draws a pistol, pointing it and the shotgun at her attackers.)
  • Truth: "You cannot hope to kill them all!"
  • (Keyes lowers both weapons, looking at the pistol.)
  • Keyes: "You're right..."
  • (Keyes reluctantly aims the pistol at Johnson.)
  • Johnson: "Do it. Me... then you.."
  • (Keyes hesitates, giving Truth enough time to fire seven Spiker rounds into her back.)
  • Johnson: (running to Keyes' aid, but being restrained by Brutes) "NO!"
  • Truth: (walking on-screen, holding the Spiker) " Your forefathers wisely set aside their compassion..."
  • (Truth looks down at Keyes' corpse, before tossing the Spiker away and walking to Johnson and the Ark's console. He shakes a fist to emphasize his speech.)
  • Truth: "... steeled themselves for what needed to be done."
  • Truth: (as he reaches Johnson) "I see now why they left you behind."
  • (Johnson is brought up to the control panel.)
  • Truth: "You were weak... and gods must be strong."
  • (Truth presses Johnson's hand onto the console, activating it.)
  • Truth: "How could I have known the Parasite would follow?! Undoubtedly this is the Heretics ' doing! A final, bitter curse. Clear evidence of treachery long hidden!"
  • Truth: "So far are we along the path, that I must strain to hear the clumsy patter of their pursuit. Know this, my brothers. They may foul the way with their charred and broken bones, but they will not stop the Journey."
  • Truth: (weakly) "Can you see, Arbiter? The moment of salvation is at hand."
  • Arbiter: (grabbing Truth by the throat) "It will not last!"
  • Truth: " Your kind ... never believed in the promise of the sacred rings."
  • Gravemind: (speaking through Truth, with Flood Spores coming out of the latter's mouth) "Lies for the weak! Beacons for the deluded!"
  • (The Arbiter draws his Energy Sword, and, without activating it, points it at Truth. The Master Chief aims his Assault Rifle at the partially-infected Prophet.)
  • Arbiter: "I will have my revenge -- on a Prophet, not a plague!"
  • Truth: "My feet tread the path. I shall become a god!"
  • Gravemind: (through Truth, as tentacles and boils erupt on the Prophet's skin) "You will be food -- Nothing more."
  • (The Master Chief approaches the panel, ready to deactivate it.)
  • Truth: "NO!"
  • (The Chief deactivates the panel.)
  • Truth: (being held aloft by the Arbiter) "I... am... Truth! The voice of the Covenant! "
  • Arbiter: "And so... you must be silenced!" (kills the Prophet)

Fall of High Charity

From Halopedia, the Halo wiki

The fall of High Charity [2] was a large battle for the control of the Covenant capital world High Charity among the Covenant , the Sangheili and those loyal to them, limited UNSC forces, and later, the Flood . The battle marked several significant events, including the start of the Great Schism , SPARTAN John-117 's pursuit of the Prophet of Truth to Earth , and the Flood invasion and infestation of High Charity.

Background [ edit ]

The fracturing of the covenant [ edit ].

With the Jiralhanae , who directly competed with the Sangheili , slowly gaining the favor of the San'Shyuum Hierarchs , it was only a matter of time before the latter were overthrown and open warfare began between the two parties. Recent failures of the Sangheili leading up to the battle, including the loss of Installation 04 and the assassination of the Prophet of Regret by the UNSC, damaged the reputation of the Sangheili and further empowered and emboldened the Jiralhanae. These events spurred the Changing of the Guard , giving the Jiralhanae the duty of protecting the Prophets - an honor traditionally held by the Sangheili, further damaging their reputation and position within the Covenant. [3]

Battle of Installation 05 [ edit ]

The Prophet of Regret's wayward mission to Earth brought High Charity, John-117 and the UNSC In Amber Clad to Installation 05. The subsequent assassination of Regret by John-117 on November 2, 2552, shocked the entire Covenant ruling structure. The Sangheili-controlled fleet's attempt to kill John-117 from orbit had failed and instead threw him into the clutches of the Gravemind, located deep underneath the Library of Installation 05. [4] With the Gravemind already plotting its way off of the Halo, this would set the tables for the invasion by both the Flood and the "Demon".

It would be Tartarus , however, who put the final pieces of the puzzle into place—some of them inadvertently. After the Arbiter successfully acquired Installation 05's activation index from the Library, Tartarus , on the order of the Hierarchs , attempted to execute him by firing a burst from his Fist of Rukt at the Arbiter and knocking him into the depths of the Library—and into the Gravemind's lair. Tartarus then took the Index and Commander Miranda Keyes and Sergeant Major Avery Johnson as prisoners back to High Charity where the Hierarchs waited. [5]

Encountering the Gravemind [ edit ]

With the index in the hands of the Covenant, and as ignorant as they might be to the true purpose of the Halos, they were fully intent on firing them - an act that would prove fatal to the Gravemind should it occur. As such, the Gravemind knew that it must not be activated, and for that it brought John-117 and the Arbiter together. After persuading the Arbiter of Halo's true power, it sent John-117 to High Charity and the Arbiter to the local installation's Control Room - the two most likely places for the Index to be. It then prepared to bring the other part of its plan into action - the invasion of High Charity . [6]

Battle [ edit ]

Opening skirmish [ edit ].

By the time John-117 arrived at High Charity, the High Charity defense fleet was in chaos. Sangheili and Jiralhanae-controlled ships engaged one another among the vast number of ships protecting the city. Unrest had begun within the city, with numerous Unggoy and Kig-Yar rioters attempting to access the Council Chamber while being held back by Jiralhanae Honor Guardsmen . Within the Council Chamber, Truth, with Mercy next to him, was giving a speech to the Covenant acknowledging the release of the Flood and announcing Tartarus' successful acquisition of the "sacred icon". As Truth's speech drew to a close, John-117 was teleported into the room by the Gravemind, appearing right beside the Unggoy who was filming the speech. He acquired the Unggoy's Needler and aimed it at the Hierarchs, but the Honor Guardsmen protected the Prophets in order for them to escape. [6]

John-117 soon eliminated the Honor Guardsmen in the room. Tartarus publicly announced to the city that the "demon" had infiltrated the Council Chamber, and promptly sealed the exits. Multiple lances of Unggoy and Jiralhanae soon entered in an attempt to kill the intruder but the Spartan prevailed. After clearing out the Covenant in the chamber, John-117 inserted Cortana into High Charity's security systems so she could open the doors to the room. She then opted to remain in the system as she felt it would provide her the greatest opportunity to aid him. With the Index clearly in the possession of the Prophet of Truth, the Spartan chased after the fleeing Prophet. He fought his way out onto the balcony formerly used to torture Thel 'Vadamee , engaging many Covenant troops and defenses including plasma cannons and a Jiralhanae Captain . Cortana used her access to High Charity's systems to reverse a gravity lift on the balcony which allowed the Spartan to travel to a lower level of the tower. As the Master Chief traversed a series of corridors, Cortana informed him that there were Marine transponders somewhere below his position. After clearing out a two-tiered room of a pack of Jiralhanae, Cortana activated another gravity lift. The Spartan was carried downwards into a large prison area. After a prolonged battle that saw the Master Chief defeating waves of Covenant entering from various doors, the Spartan was successful in rescuing five Marines who joined him in his hunt for the Prophet. The Covenant refused to give up the prison without a fight, however; more troops, including Unggoy Heavies with plasma cannons, descended from the gravity lift the Chief used to enter the prison. The UNSC force was successful in repelling the attack, and left the prison. [6]

The Great Schism begins [ edit ]

the journey waits for no one

Soon after the Marines were rescued by the Master Chief, the Prophet of Truth declared that the Jiralhanae were now in charge of all Covenant fleets. The Jiralhanae within High Charity, under the secret order of Truth, instigate a citywide attack on the Sangheili, and the conflict that was already occurring within the defense fleet spread into High Charity itself. The Kig-Yar and Yanme'e remained loyal to the Jiralhanae-led Covenant while the majority of the Mgalekgolo remained loyal to the Sangheili. The Unggoy were present on both sides, as they generally remained loyal to whoever was commanding them. The Jiralhanae focused on attacking Sangheili in the towers of the city, then spread out to the lower levels . Meanwhile, the fighting above and around the city continued, with the Jiralhanae and San'Shyuum Prelates initially winning the battle against the Sangheili. [7]

John-117 and the rescued Marines made their way through corridors full of battling members of different species as the Covenant fragmented around them. Many former Sangheili Honor Guardsmen reacquired the armor that they lost during the Changing of the Guard , fighting against the Covenant and the Prophets that they once protected. Swarms of Yanme'e flitted through the corridors, providing aerial support for the Jiralhanae as they led Kig-Yar against the Sangheili. The human force sometimes opted to watch as the two sides fought rather than becoming directly involved. As the Master Chief and his Marines entered the first Valley of Tears , they witnessed brutal up-close fighting between Jiralhanae and Sangheili soldiers, while a lone Mgalekgolo attempted to fend off surrounding Jiralhanae and Kig-Yar Snipers . Above these combatants, aerial conflict between Sangheili Rangers and Yanme'e raged. Taking advantage of the in-fighting Covenant, the UNSC team was able to traverse through the environment module. As they made their way into one of the city's Hanging Gardens , the crack of a slipspace rupture filled the air as the UNSC In Amber Clad emerged, passing over the humans and crashing into a tower ahead of their position, although it would be a while until the humans knew the truth around the frigate's arrival. [6]

the journey waits for no one

Fighting through dueling Jiralhanae Honor Guardsmen and Special Operations Sangheili in the Hanging Gardens, the Spartan and his Marines entered the Mid Tower , where more fighting between aerial Covenant units was taking place. Even as the Prophet of Truth delivered reassuring announcements through the city's loudspeakers, the Jiralhanae within the city began to make headway against the Sangheili, forcing them out of the second Hanging Garden and back towards the Mausoleum of the Arbiter . John-117 arrived in the garden just in time to see several Jiralhanae slaughtering a group of panicking Unggoy. The Sangheili-led Covenant made a firm stand against the Jiralhanae in the second Valley of Tears , deploying a unit of Special Operations Unggoy and Sangheili into the area. The bridge leading into the Mausoleum saw some of the most intense fighting, as the Sangheili, along with Mgalekgolo and heavy weapon-wielding Unggoy battled to deny the Jiralhanae entrance to the Mausoleum. Despite their efforts, a group of Jiralhanae managed to make it through and fighting spread to the central chamber of the Mausoleum itself. A massive battle between the Jiralhanae, a number of Ultras and another Mgalekgolo pair occurred around the sarcophagus that once housed the armor of the Arbiter . Despite the odds, the Master Chief succeeded in eliminating all Covenant between him and the Prophet of Truth, although all of his accompanying Marines died in the process. [6]

Invasion of the Flood [ edit ]

the journey waits for no one

Even as John-117 closed in on the Prophet of Truth, the truth about the In Amber Clad soon made itself known; the UNSC frigate had become infested by the Flood while over Installation 05 's Quarantine Zone . With the ship having deployed most of its forces onto the surface of the ring to aid in the push through the Quarantine Zone, the Flood easily overwhelmed the under-strength ship and the Gravemind himself used the ship to deliver himself onto High Charity. Swarms of Pod infectors seeped out of rents in the frigate's hull while the ship's remaining Pelicans were used to deploy Flood forms across the city. [8] As the Flood threat became apparent, the ships crewed by San'Shyuum Prelates began to depart from the ongoing naval battle around High Charity to descend to High Charity's lower stalks in order to rescue the San 'Shyuum from the city. [7]

Shortly after the battle in the Mausoleum, Truth made it to his escape Phantom on the Far Tower and handed the Index over to Tartarus to commence the "Great Journey" . Tartarus prepared to take the Index along with 343 Guilty Spark and UNSC prisoners Commander Keyes and Sergeant Major Johnson to Installation 05 to activate the Halo. Before they could leave, however, Pod infectors attacked them. Tartarus and Jiralhanae Honor Guardsmen tried to defend the Prophets of Truth and Mercy , but one of the Pod infectors got through their screen and landed on Mercy. When Tartarus tried to remove the infector, Truth ordered him to let the Prophet die so Truth himself could be the sole Hierarch ruling the Covenant. [6]

Evacuations [ edit ]

the journey waits for no one

John-117 arrived just in time to see the three Phantoms depart from the Far Tower, two of them departing High Charity for Installation 05 while the third, Truth's, headed into the city. It didn't take him long to find the place where the Prophet of Mercy lay, struggling with the Pod infector and nearing death. In his interrogation of the Prophet, he learned that the Prophet of Truth was intending to make his way to Earth. The Chief then killed the Pod infector, killing the frail Prophet in the process. Cortana determined that Truth was heading towards the Forerunner Dreadnought which stood in the middle of the city. Cortana stated that she could detonate In Amber Clad 's reactors if it was needed to destroy the Halo installation. Cortana determined that she could not trust the fail-safe detonation of In Amber Clad to any copy of herself and so she had to remain behind. As the Chief prepared to move, a Flood-controlled Pelican crashed nearby, spilling Flood combat forms onto the Far Tower. As John-117 moved back into the Mausoleum tower, Cortana informed the Spartan that there was a conduit connecting to the Dreadnought nearby. While John-117 fought his way through the city which was by this point rapidly falling to the Flood and was beginning the process of becoming a Flood hive , Cortana was forced to contend with a fragment of the ancient Forerunner Ancilla Mendicant Bias to delay the launch of the Dreadnought. John-117 barely made to the Dreadnought in time through the conduit . Before he left, the Chief promised to come back for Cortana. [8]

As the Anodyne Spirit left, a group of San'Shyuum managed to flee the station thanks to the efforts of Prelate Dhas Bhasvod . An important figure apart of this group, was Jom G'e'qth . [9]

Closing [ edit ]

Since the Forerunner Dreadnought served as the power source to High Charity, most of the lighting shut down as a result of the Dreadnought leaving the city's power grid, worsening the catastrophe. In pitch black darkness, the Flood spread virulently through the High Charity, attacking and infecting the warring Jiralhanae and Sangheili. As Flood forms swarmed the Tower Districts, the Covenant forces led by the Jiralhanae were overrun after the Sangheili were wiped out. [8] After the Tower Districts fell, the Flood moved on to the city's many other levels, quickly overwhelming the remaining populace despite fierce resistance. [7] The large body count from the battle only fueled the Flood's progress and they soon spread all over the city, including the docks where countless ships were trying to evacuate from the doomed city. [7] The air soon became saturated with Flood spores and blisters began to grow throughout the station. Mere hours after the Flood arrived, High Charity had completely fallen. [10] The Vice Minister of Abnegation Alo Sebukah , managed to flee High Charity as the Gravemind began to torture the now trapped Cortana. [11]

It didn't take long for Flood-infested ships to start launching from High Charity, intending to spread the infection to the warring ships in the airspace around the city. At least one Sangheili, Voro 'Mantakree , managed to negotiate a temporary truce between the Jiralhanae and Sangheili ships in order to focus their efforts on preventing the Flood from escaping. [12] This truce was short-lived, as the Jiralhanae began to target Sangheili ships again before all of the Flood had been wiped out. At some point during the battle, the assault carrier Shadow of Intent glassed part of High Charity in an attempt to combat the Flood aboard it. [7]

Eventually the Sangheili ships were successful in defeating the Jiralhanae, many of whom retreated to follow Truth's Dreadnought to Earth. The Sangheili subsequently set up a naval blockade around High Charity and Installation 05, with the aim of preventing the Flood from leaving the Coelest system . Despite their efforts, at least one Flood-infested cruiser managed to escape, and it was pursued by the Fleet of Retribution to Earth . [13]

Aftermath [ edit ]

Tartarus and installation 05 [ edit ].

Tartarus eventually arrived at Installation 05's Control Room with Miranda Keyes and 343 Guilty Spark, and began the firing sequence for Installation 05. However, the Chieftain was confronted by the Arbiter and Sergeant Johnson. The Arbiter attempted to convince Tartarus about the true purpose of the Halo Array but the Jiralhanae refused to listen, forcing Thel, Sergeant Johnson and a group of Sangheili to engage him while the firing sequence initiated. Tartarus was eventually slain and the firing sequence was aborted by Miranda Keyes, putting all remaining Halo installations into standby mode, readying them for a final activation from Installation 00 . [14]

Anodyne Spirit [ edit ]

Five days after departing from High Charity, the Forerunner Dreadnought arrived in the Sol system , [15] along with the remaining Jiralhanae-held ships from the battle around High Charity. As the Dreadnought approached Earth John-117, who had stowed away as it left High Charity, informed Fleet Admiral Terrence Hood of his presence aboard the ship. [14] At some point during the Dreadnought's journey, the Spartan attempted to assassinate Truth, but he was unable to do so [16] and is forced to leave the Forerunner Dreadnought as it entered Earth's atmosphere, landing in the jungles of Tanzania , Africa .

The Flood and High Charity [ edit ]

The Flood gained full control of High Charity and the Gravemind took up residence in the fortress, turning the city into a massive Flood hive . Cortana, who was stranded in High Charity's computer systems, was questioned by the Gravemind who interrogated and tortured her. [17] This drove her to the point of rampancy , but she managed to send a message to Earth and hold onto an important secret . [13] Although the Forerunner Dreadnought decoupled from the city, the Flood managed to transport the High Charity to Installation 00 via slipspace during the Battle of the Citadel by using the city's backup reactors. The city crashed on to the surface, spreading Flood infection and adding chaos to the final battle of the Human-Covenant War. [18] After Truth's death, John-117 returned to the city to rescue Cortana, destroying the city by overloading its reactors, which caused it to go critical and detonate. [19]

Legacy [ edit ]

Many years after the destruction of High Charity, rumors about the fate of the holy city, and the possible survival of the Flood within the wreckage were dismissed by Voridus and other members of the Banished as old Covenant propaganda while making their way towards the ruins of the city to search for salvage to aid in their ongoing conflict against the forces of the UNSC Spirit of Fire on the Ark. Unfortunately for the Banished, the threat soon proved real, with surviving Flood from High Charity's wreckage pouring out after the Banished breached a section of the containment shield with a Scarab . After a brief struggle, Voridus and Pavium were able to destroy a proto-Gravemind moments away from it becoming a Gravemind and the installation's Sentinels soon arrived, once again quarantining any remaining Flood inside High Charity's remains. ROSENDA & THOM

Last week, we released the Noble Intention Event in Halo Infinite as a last surprise on the doorstep of Season 3.

This free in-game event put the two forgotten Spartans of Noble Team, Thom-A293 and Rosenda-A344, front-and-center. Thom sacrificed himself in the live action “Deliver Hope” trailer , while Rosenda existed only in a handful of obscure fictional references.

Alongside the event, we released the Halo: Winter Contention short story ( available on Halo Waypoint and as an audiobook on YouTube ), exploring an earlier configuration of Noble Team, and we saw some amazing fan art and cosplay emerge to honor these two new (old) Spartan-III super-soldiers.

Time Waits for No Man (Origin, Meaning, Examples)

time waits for no man

Time waits for no man. Have you ever woken up late and gotten ready for the office at your own pace, thinking you have enough time left? But after reaching the office, you realize that most of your colleagues have already completed their jobs. The proverb “Time waits for no man” may apply here more than everywhere else.

You start procrastinating on certain tasks thinking that you have enough time to complete them. But the sun will rise and set down in its own time, and you will remain behind in this process.

Let’s look at this phrase’s actual meaning, origin, phrase, statements, and teachings.

Where did the proverb “time and tide wait for no one” come from?

It’s been said for ages that time and tide wait for no one . Though its history goes back beyond the year 1225, when it was originally cited as a Saint Mahler quotation,

Like time, Tide also doesn’t stop even if you try to stop it. Its concept is from a famous story of a king who tried to stop high-rise tides by commanding because he wanted to show his followers that nothing can stop time.

What is meant by the expression’ time waits for no man or woman?

A clock’s hands never cease moving. Time keeps moving, an inevitable process.

We can interpret it in this way in terms of the sun. Every day, the sun will rise and set at the same time. The same is true of numerous natural occurrences, which demonstrates time doesn’t stop for anyone and that it never will.

You only get 24 hours in a day to make or break yourself. It’s upon you to decide how you want to utilize those time. whether in playing Xbox games, watching TV, or preparing for your upcoming exams and your next project.

To continue working, you must move in step with time. The moment you stop, that exact moment, you lose it all.

Time waits for no man

How to use the phrase “time wait for no man” in a sentence

Time has so much importance in our daily life that we keep using it in our sentence in one way or other. There have been many instances where this word fits perfectly to complete a sentence . some examples:

1) You must quit delaying tasks and putting them off, or you will regret wasting this valuable time in the future since time waits for no man.

2)She must complete her pilot certificate course immediately as very soon she will be running out of her age. Time waits for no man.

3) Jordan seems to be munching on a steady diet of pasta, pizza, and ice cream, and is not in the mood to get up, but time waits for no man.

What is the opposite of proverb ‘Time and Tide wait for none’

As with any other proverb, this proverb has its antonym phrase which is equally important and used in daily life in sentences. This phrase is ‘Good things come to those who wait.’

A very famous proverb similar to ‘Time a tide waits for none,’ this proverb has been used to describe the fact that patience is rewarded. A man should keep doing his work consistently while waiting patiently for his results which he will soon be rewarded with.

Although entirely opposite for ‘time and tide waits for none’, it can’t be termed as wholly negative or antonym to ‘time waits for none’ phrase. This is because both have different meanings of their own and are used in completely different contexts.

What is the most important message in the proverb “time waits for none”

Whether a person is rich or miser, they have got only limited 24 hours in their life to make it. It’s upon them how they want to utilize that time.

A very obvious message this phrase gives us is that we should never waste our time or money. This is because we never know when it will all end up in misery. A king can be poor, and a poor man can become a king if they value their time efficiently and stop procrastinating.

Time Waits For No One by The Rolling Stones

the journey waits for no one

  • Yes, star-crossed in pleasure, the stream flows on by Yes, as we're sated in leisure, we watch it fly, yes And time waits for no one, and it won't wait for me And time waits for no one, and it won't wait for me Time can tear down a building or destroy a woman's face Hours are like diamonds, don't let them waste Time waits for no one, no favors has he Time waits for no one, and he won't wait for me Men, they build towers to their passing Yes, to their fame everlasting Here he comes, chopping and reaping Hear him laugh at their cheating And time waits for no man, and it won't wait for me Yes, time waits for no one, and it won't wait for thee Drink in your summer, gather your corn The dreams of the nighttime will vanish by dawn And time waits for no one, and it won't wait for me And time waits for no one, and it won't wait for me No, no, no, not for me, no, not for me Writer/s: Keith Richards, Mick Jagger Publisher: Kobalt Music Publishing Ltd., Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC, Warner Chappell Music, Inc. • Doug Crooks from Almost As Far Northwest As You Can Get Hands down, my favorite Stones song ... So many layers of musical genius.
  • Pat From Wallingford, Pa from Wallingford, Pa It's a Deep Track, so well under the Radar. But it shouldn't be. The flow of this tune is unique for the Stones. A real masterpiece that takes you on a soothing, melodic journey. Mick & Mick, what a combo!
  • Lisa from Sarasota I love this song. Love the melody, the lyrics, all of it. Wonder what direction Mick and Keith would have gone in if MT had stayed.
  • Mahkeh from La This might be one of the finest ever recorded moments for the Stones. Truly a high water mark. Profound introspective lyrics over a great set of chords an equally great groove, and a guitar solo among guitar solos. Much is made of the style MT plays the solo with. Yes, it evokes Carlos Santana. And, so what? ... it certainly serves the song well to play it that way. Transcends the moment. If you really think Carlos Santana played the solo on TWFNO, you may not really understand what it is to be influenced by another player. BTW, someone on this thread says, "show us any time where M.T. sounded ANYTHING LIKE THIS..... NEVER." Wrong! ... simply listen to the middle section/outro of Can't You Hear Me Knocking'" C'mon man, you cannot be serious.
  • Two Wheeler from Usa Time may never tell. All guitarist have DNA. No one can change that. Stevie could never sound like Jimmy...Nor can anyone sound like Carlos Santana. I will NEVER believe M.T. played the guitar in Time. Carlos Santana is the only person who could have played the guitar in that song.. You could NEVER imitate Santana EVER! Also show us any time where M.T. sounded ANYTHING LIKE THIS..... NEVER. GREAT musician's will keep this under their hat..
  • Jeff from Lakewood Ranch Great song. Lyrics. Melody. Instruments. Berry underated just like Moonlight Mile, Waiting on a Friend, Memory Motel, ….and even early ones like Last Time, time is on my side
  • John from On The Road To Nowhere Graduated from high school the year this song was released. Became a personal ballad over the next several years as several personal friends went on in other directions both good and tragically bad. Absolutely loved the song the first time and never understood but now glad it was never a typical Stones hit that is played I to the dirt. Not the emotional type, but one of the few tunes that truly can bring a tear to my eye. Best stones song in my opinion.
  • Pt from Cape Cod This song will be played at my funeral......
  • Rob Nickel from Manitoba Canada Yep one of their best alright. Nobody ever played a finer solo than Mick T does on this song and I’ve always thought it stunk how he wasn’t credited for his contributions to the band. No mystery why he quit.
  • Steve P from Sydney This song? ! Firstly, it is arguably the Stones greatest moment. Secondly, it cannot be replicated Live because the band lost Mick Taylor soon after its release. The lead could be authentically (practiced &) performed by another Likely Lad (apart from Taylor), like say Gary Moore, but he's dead, or perhaps Santana, but as for Ronnie Wood (or Keef) - not bloody likely. One of the other great moments of the Stones: 'Wild Horses'. And again: Thanks to the nuance of MT's guitar following Jagger around (or vice versa)!
  • Steve W from Cambridge, Ma Stargroves was the name of Mick Jagger's country house, not their mobile studio. Of course they used their mobile recording truck to record there. They rented or loaned it to others as well; see the lyrics to Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water".
  • Lorenzo from Houston, Tx My best died when I was 8. I have lived my life differently because of that. Live your life as if it were last day on earth. Tell your loved ones that you love them - you may not have tomorrow. Cherish your life, loved ones and friends.
  • Adrian from London, United Kingdom Time can tear down a building or destroy a woman's face, hours are like diamonds don't let it waste!
  • Ny from Canberra, Australia Aint that the truth, time waits for none of us. 'HOURS ARE LIKE DIAMONDS, DONT LET THEM WASTE..' we all need to be reminded of that from time to time.
  • James from Philadelphia, Pa One of my favorite Stones songs. Mick Taylor!
  • Bg from Brooksville, Fl Something both so sad and so earthy about this song that you never hear on the radio ! I guess I jsut found out why the Stones dont play it now, the magic of the soloist cannot be repeated or they dont want to
  • David from Woburn, Ma Taylor's guitar solo at the end of the song reminds me of Santana's style of play. Absolutely beautiful song by the best band in the world.
  • Norm from Seattle, Wa In a recent Rolling Stone piece on the Stones Keith Richards was quoted as saying if it was up to him Mick Taylor "would still be in the band."
  • Christopher L. from Fort Worth, Tx I saw the stones in 1981 @ the Cotton Bowl in Dallas,Tx it was my first and last time to see them and I remember waiting for them to sing this song but they didn't sing it. I was somewhat disappointed but the show was so damn good you couldn't help but forgive them!!!
  • Sam from Hipsville, Ca I too think that Mick Taylor was a great asset to the Stones[Exile on Main St.]...need i say more?
  • Channing from Washingon, Dc I think at this point this is my favorite Stones song. I agree that it is completely underrated. To me this is a Mick Taylor/Mick Jagger cut and illustrates how both the Stones and Mick Taylor lost out when the Stones lost Taylor, as far as I can tell due to ill-treatment and jealously of Richards. If the Sones want to prove me wrong, they can perform it in concert, which they never have! Jagger and Taylor had real chemistry and synergy, and it was a very long time, perhaps never, before the Stones recaptured this level of quality. Not that I do not love Ron Wood. He certainly is core to the current Stones line-up. Not that I do not love Richards, too.
  • Toe from C Town, Oh The best Stones song nobody ever talks about. Severely underrated.
  • Craig from Melbourne, Australia Amazing song. Extremely well crafted. The Taylor influence is very noticeable on IORR - his last album.
  • Robert from Queens, Ny Contrary to believe, Mick Taylor wrote most of this song and was extremely displeased over this. One of the reasons why he left the band in 1974.
  • Karl Middleton from Melbourne, Australia I was 16 when this song came out on Its Only Rock and Roll. It could transport me to another plane then, and it still does now. The message is clear. Time is precious and is the only thing you can not recover if you spend it. Use it wisely. As Napoleon once said, he know the true value of five minutes. Time waits for no one.
  • Bill from Louiville, Co This song lifts the spirit and brings a tear joy, even now, 33 years later. Another great: Santana, "Song of the wind". circa 1972. Bill, louisville,co.
  • Stacey from Houston, Tx I cannot believe there are so few postings on this song. This song and "Tops" are two absolute favorites of mine....both are very spacy and surreal. Love it!!! -Stacey "Seven" Madding, Houston
  • Mike from Warwick, Ri Mick is now 60 and reminds us everytime he takes the stage that time waits for no one. I suspect they will still be touring and selling out retirement homes in another 20 years.

Time Waits for No One

It’s sad to remember time Looking back won’t stop the hands Standing still won’t silence the rain It won’t stop the war

Holding the sun won’t calm the waves A passing day is just the same A lighted torch won’t scare them all It won’t scare them all

We are resistance We resist all that moves on We’ll fight our battles We’ll fight our battles on

We may lose a battle or two But we won’t lose the war The world depends on us Whether they know it or not

We’re fighting for a cause With little support for foundation The only cause worth fighting for And it’s been lost in the sands of time It’s been buried in the sands of time For so long

Reach out Outside yourself

Though time waits for no one We’ll fight our battles on

Though time waits for no one We’ll fight our battles on Not for personal glory But for the rights of every man

We are seclusion Seeking the calm before the storm We’ll fight our battles We’ll fight our battles on

We are resistance In need of some time before we’re gone

Many can’t wait for the eclipse. Some can’t wait until it’s over.

An angry face emoji as one phase of a total eclipse

Months of planning have gone into the handful of minutes it will take for the moon to pass in front of the sun on Monday. Dozens of towns and cities in the solar eclipse’s path of totality have arranged packed schedules of celebratory events and viewing sites, preparing to welcome legions of enthusiastic visitors like Michael Howard.

The 62-year-old is flying from Baltimore to San Antonio, Texas, and then driving about 65 miles northwest to Kerrville — where he’s all but certain to hit eclipse traffic .

“I wouldn’t say anyone thinks I’m crazy for doing this, but I do know plenty of people who just don’t think it’s worth the trouble,” said Howard.

We’ve been accused of blowing everything out of proportion, overreaching, trying to make a ‘money grab.’

Micah McBay, Community engagement director, Greenville, TX

On the other side of the state, Greenville’s community engagement director, Micah McBay, has been fielding pushback from residents who feel similarly to Howard’s detractors.

“Some people can’t grasp that the eclipse is a huge event and think it’s just a bunch of hullabaloo and nonsense,” he said.

The small city of some 30,000 to the northeast of Dallas is celebrating 4 minutes and 10 seconds of totality with multiple free concerts, watch parties and other festivities. But the efforts have lately drawn a wave of negative commentary on the city’s Facebook page and other social media platforms.

“We’ve been accused of blowing everything out of proportion, overreaching, trying to make a ‘money grab,’ and wasting government dollars,” McBay said.

Some of the criticism is easy to dismiss. “I had one lady call to ask why we scheduled the eclipse on a Monday instead of a Saturday,” he added.

But other concerns are well justified, and authorities around the country are hoping to get through the next few days without incident.

“We’re preparing for the worst and praying for the best,” said Betty Teel-Malone, the mayor of Wolfe City, Texas, 17 miles north of Greenville.

The town of 1,400 has no traffic light, a volunteer fire department and limited public services, “so we’re not planning any eclipse events and not advertising for anyone to come here,” said Teel-Malone. She doesn’t want to outright urge people to steer clear but is warning those who show up that “we can’t accommodate them.”

We’re preparing for the worst and praying for the best.

Wolfe City, Tx, Mayor Betty Teel-Malone

“There are no hotels, no parks, no camping, no RV parks or anything like that in this area,” Teel-Malone said. Perhaps more importantly, she added, “we don’t have the police to keep whoever does come here safe.”

Even officials with robust public safety resources at their command are taking extra precautions.

Last week, Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb signed an executive order warning residents and local leaders about the “massive number of people” heading to the Hoosier State for the eclipse. He urged officials to be “prepared to protect the health, safety and welfare of the public” and be ready to “swiftly and effectively respond to any emergency that may arise.”

In Ohio, where the path of totality extends from Dayton to Cleveland and several major sporting events are also taking place over the weekend, authorities are planning for potential headaches.

“What we’re mostly concerned about is traffic,” said Dan Tierney, the press secretary for Gov. Mike DeWine, who has activated the Ohio Emergency Operations Center to support local communities before, during and after the eclipse.

“We need to make sure our agencies are fully staffed and available to keep people safe, prevent backups and bottlenecking” and be prepared for “any eventuality that might occur,” Tierney said.

In central Texas, aviation authorities are bracing for what could be a grumpy group of travelers testing their operational capacity. Austin-Bergstrom International Airport will have extra staff in the terminal “to provide assistance to passengers and to help keep ticket counter and security screening lines organized,” spokesperson Lesly Ramirez said in a statement Friday.

And that’s all when travelers get there. Major roads and highways throughout central Texas are expected to be congested in the hours surrounding the eclipse, and lines at rental car desks could back up.

Ramirez echoed perhaps the most common warning resounding across the state this week: “Prepare to spend more time sitting in traffic.”

Wait, an Oregon Girl Was Allegedly Gang Raped at School...and No One Called the Police?

Matt Vespa

What is going on with Portland Public Schools? Third graders are being raped, and no one called the police—that’s the gist of the story. It’s a tale that slapped the school system with a $9 million lawsuit, and rightfully so. In 2022, the victim, then aged 9, was the target of multiple sexual assaults and unwanted advances at Scott Elementary School in Northeast Portland.

The school not calling the police was bad enough. What’s worse is that the alleged attackers weren’t expelled, which is the least this district could have done. Instead, they opted for a safety protocol wherein the girl and her alleged rapists would be given different lunch periods. Is this for real?

NEW: Portland family sues Portland Public School district for $9 million after their daughter was allegedly ‘gang r*ped’ in the school bathroom. The girl was allegedly assaulted by two male students in the Schools Uniting Neighborhoods program. It gets worse. The boys only… pic.twitter.com/EJLRDgzTm6 — Collin Rugg (@CollinRugg) April 4, 2024
When the student was in the third grade at Scott Elementary School in Northeast Portland in 2022, she was sexually assaulted several times during school hours and while at a county-led after-school program, the lawsuit states. This included unwanted touching of her genitals over her clothing by a classmate during class while being taught by a district educator.  In a separate incident in the same school year, another student tried to kiss the girl without her permission. According to the lawsuit, she then hit the student in the face, and both were suspended. After the incidents, staff at Scott Elementary School told the girl’s father that they intended to "issue a safety plan" for her.  Then, in a different incident within the same school year, two male classmates kissed the girl without her permission while they were at the after-school program, Schools Uniting Neighborhoods (SUN) Community Schools, jointly operated by the Latino Network on the elementary school grounds. Shortly afterwards, the two male students threatened the girl, instructing her to tell the after-school program staff that she needed to use the bathroom or else "they would find out where she lived," according to the lawsuit.  The students followed her to the bathroom, locked her in the stall, removed her pants and took turns sexually assaulting her as she protested. The girl tried to escape but both of her assaulters took turns blocking the stall door to prevent her from leaving, according to the lawsuit. The father of one of the male students involved learned of the incident from their child and reported it to staff at Scott Elementary School. Instead of notifying police immediately, "PPS undertook their own internal investigation,” the lawsuit claims. PPS staff interviewed the girl without notifying her parents or legal guardians of the sexual assault. (via KGW8 )

The report added that the victim's parents eventually learned of their child’s assault, got her medical attention, and transferred her to a different public school. That process did take about a month, and she and her brother were out of school during that transition period. The girl’s attackers remained and only got a one-day suspension.

These kids should be in juvenile detention and, if warranted, be charged as adults for rape and locked up. What is going on in our education system? Every layer is fraught with corruption, incompetence, and outright illegality.

Dani Vivian celebrates a victory

Dani Vivian: ‘No one is an obstacle. You see that spirit in Basque football, even in the kids’

Athletic defender reflects on the unique nature of playing for the club and the team’s quest to end long wait for a major trophy

D ani Vivian is reading 1984. “Maybe it’s a sign,” the Athletic defender says. He hadn’t thought of it like that, but now that he does there’s a smile. 1984 was the last time his club won a major trophy. Back then, over a million people lined Bilbao, packed on to the banks of the Nervión as the players passed in a barge. Thousands more followed in small boats, anything they could find: dinghies, tugs, canoes. The photos are astonishing and they are everywhere in the city. They are also 40 years old; just the word gabarra (barge) has something mythical about it, instantly understood and loaded with nostalgia.

Longing too. Like the immense majority of his teammates, Vivian grew up supporting Athletic and has heard about the gabarra many times but, born in 1999, he has not been on board or seen anyone else there either. Even the club’s sporting director has never witnessed them lifting a trophy. The barge has not sailed in four decades but permits have been requested to unmoor it, just in case. On Saturday Athletic play Real Mallorca in the Copa del Rey final in Seville, 900km south, where 100,000 Basques are expected. This could be the biggest moment in a generation, like something from another time.

“Athletic is unique,” Vivian says, and it needs saying sometimes, a reminder that what they do is not normal. The centre-back, one of four Athletic players in Spain’s last squad, talks about facing Chivas in a friendly. Fielding only Mexicans, in a global game Chivas is an outlier; in post-Bosman Europe, what Athletic do, playing only with those born or raised in the Basque Country, is something else again. “We do it with a region,” Vivian adds. One that accounts for 4.9% of Spain’s population.

It is a miracle. “I think it’s the work,” Vivian responds. “It is the work of lots of people whose names don’t appear but who are there every day.” It is also a reason to recalibrate success, the defender insists – and in fact, there is something in his analysis that could be applied well beyond Bilbao and beyond trophies too.

“‘Forty years’: sometimes, saying that, it’s as if there hasn’t been any history in the meantime, as if in all these years nothing has been written, and that’s not the case,” he says. “You can’t compare eras either. Generations have been here who have worked very well, lots of people have done good things. It’s not that our fans think: ‘bloody hell, they haven’t made us happy in 40 years.’ No. I don’t think it’s like that.”

Far from it. One of only three clubs to have played their entire history in the first division, that Athletic compete at all is a success, an act of defiance, affirmation. They reached this year’s final defeating Atlético Madrid and Barcelona and this is the fifth year running they reached the semi-final. They have played two of the last four finals, five in 15 years, and a Uefa Cup final too. And although there is a warning in the fact that they didn’t win any, there was celebration, achievement and enjoyment. They did win the Super Cup, twice.

Athletic celebrate winning the Spanish Super Cup in 2015

Besides, there is something beyond the pitch, a connection that makes them different – and helps them compete. A community, an identity arguably deeper than any club on earth. Every child that is born in the province of Vizcaya receives a bib welcoming them to the family; Vivian appears on posters for their own literacy crusade , part of an entire, inclusive cultural programme. He read Kafka’s The Metamorphosis, not that he liked it that much. “It’s not just the recent history, not just sport, but the way the club treats its people, how it reaches them,” he says. “It’s a very special way of being, very few clubs can create that. It’s like you don’t choose to be an Athletic fan; you’re born with it.”

“It’s very deeply rooted, there in the way we work with our academy, in our ideology,” he continues. “There’s an identification we all share in the dressing room, a group with the same values and experiences: that definitely helps us compete. We have a good time together, but that should never be seen as a lack of discipline. No one is an obstacle. Basque clubs have that character. You see that spirit in Basque football, even in the kids. It’s always there.”

after newsletter promotion

Ilusion is the word: hope, excitement, a dream, the feeling something is happening, something good. “There have been seasons, including the last few, when Athletic have been one step away from winning a trophy,” Vivian says. “We created and built that ilusion , our fans have enjoyed it. That matters. We can’t tell ourselves we haven’t done anything for years, or feel that as a pressure.”

It is inevitable, the weight of the past and the expectation of the present. In none of the six finals over the last 15 years were Athletic favourites but this time they are, not that you will catch them saying so. Mallorca are to be respected even if they are not Barcelona, Atlético or Real Sociedad, their opponents then. But Ernesto Valverde’s team are flying, playing what Ander Herrera calls “rock and roll football, exhausting for opponents”: relentless and fun to watch too . They blew Atlético and Barcelona away, scoring seven times across the quarters and semis at San Mamés. At the end of each game, Vivian admits, he is exhausted, as much mentally as physically. But it is the way he likes it; it is also worth it.

“In previous years we did good things but maybe didn’t take that final step. Now we are where we are and we don’t want to come down from there,” he says. “I see a spark, a togetherness. There’s an energy and strength that is contagious.” Athletic are fighting for a Champions League place and have a place in the final. A place in history awaits, so too the barge. It is not that they have done nothing, no, but this would be everything. Growing up here hearing the stories from another time they never saw for themselves, Vivian and his team mates know that. A moment so big, a story so deep someone should write a book about it.

No Eclipse Plans? Try These Last-Minute Strategies.

On April 8, parts of 13 U.S. states, Mexico and Canada will plunge into midday darkness. Miss this spectacle and you’ll have to wait till 2044 for the next one so close to home.

A giant pair of blue eclipse glasses is mounted on four supports in a grassy park. The glasses are decorated with drawings of suns and moons wearing glasses, cowboy boots, stars, trees, rockets and other whimsical drawings. The nose piece of the glasses reads, “Total Solar Eclipse: 4.08.24.”

By Derek M. Norman

This article is part of The Times’s coverage of the April 8 eclipse , the last time a total solar eclipse will be visible in most of North America for 20 years.

On April 8, a total solar eclipse will blot out the sun for roughly 4,200 miles stretching from Mexico to Canada — a cosmic show that so much of North America won’t see again for about 20 years. Many made their plans to view it well in advance.

And then there are the procrastinators, who just realized they’re about to miss out. If that’s you, you’ve still got options, but not as many.

“At this point, your goal is just to get to the path of totality and see the eclipse for the longest possible time,” said Melanie Fish, the head of global public relations for Expedia Group Brands . “You’re not trying to find the best party. You’re not trying to make it into your dream vacation. You just want to get to the path of totality.”

So first, get your hands on some eclipse glasses so you can safely watch . Then find a way to get yourself into the path of totality, the strip running across 13 states where the moon will fully eclipse the sun. You’ll be competing with people who have already spiked the demand for flights and accommodations, so be ready to pay more.

And take off the next day, too, if you can. Otherwise, you may spend hours caught in traffic, as many discovered after the 2017 eclipse .

Here are four strategies for a last-minute foray into the total-eclipse zone.

The Path of the Eclipse

On April 8, a total solar eclipse will cross North America from Mazatlán, Mexico, to the Newfoundland coast near Gander, Canada. Viewers outside the path of the total eclipse will see a partial eclipse, if the sky is clear .

Drive toward the darkness

If you have access to wheels and live within a few hours of the path of the total eclipse, you can always jump in the car. You might even find relatively inexpensive accommodations just outside the zone, and then drive in from there.

But if you’re hoping to rent a car, you might have some trouble.

The rental car company Hertz reported a 3,000 percent increase in advanced bookings for car rentals in cities along the eclipse path compared with the previous year. The highest demand so far has come in places like Dallas and Austin, Texas, as well as Cleveland and Indianapolis.

If you want to try anyway, book your car as soon as possible and focus your search for rental agencies outside of high-volume areas like airports, advised Isabella Sawyer, a Hertz spokeswoman. Neighborhood locations, she said, may have better availability.

Whether you rent or own your ride, be prepared for gridlock. “People arrive at different times, but everybody leaves at the same time — and that’s the problem,” said Aixa Diaz, an AAA spokeswoman. “Let’s say you have about five million people looking at an eclipse, and everybody leaves at the same time . That’s like the equivalent of 71 sold-out football games all getting out at the same time.”

Taking off the extra day could help you avoid traffic. Data from the 2017 total eclipse, which also took place on a Monday, showed about 41 percent less traffic leaving destinations on Tuesday, compared with Monday, Ms. Diaz said.

Fly into the zone

You could also book a last-minute flight to a city in the path of the total eclipse, preferably one where you won’t need a car. Searches for flights along the eclipse path have quadrupled compared with the same time last year, said Katy Nastro, a spokeswoman at Going.com .

“What is unique about this event is that people are not bound to fly to just one place to be able to experience the eclipse,” she said, “which means they can look at multiple cities in the path, or even cities near the path,” and then, provided you can find a rental car in your destination, drive into the path.

“For example, you could fly into and stay in Toronto, then drive to the border to view the eclipse from the Canadian side of Niagara Falls, just a two-and-a-half-hour drive away,” Ms. Nastro said. (As of Wednesday, Toronto’s main airport still had rental cars available, starting at about $40 a day.)

Go where the hotels are

The path of totality crosses not only small towns but also plenty of hotel-rich urban areas stretching from Texas through the Midwest and upstate New York — places like Dallas-Fort Worth, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Buffalo and Rochester, N.Y., and Montreal.

But even in cities with more available rooms, you’ll still most likely have to pay a premium.

“I saw a two-star apartment hotel in Nashville going for $900 all in,” Ms. Fish said of one of the accommodations she found (Nashville is a couple of hours’ drive outside the total-eclipse path), “and a Super 8 in Indianapolis going for $500 the night of the eclipse. So if you’re booking last minute to go see the eclipse, yeah, you are going to pay more.”

Packaging a flight and accommodations on a travel booking app could help save money, as well as headaches, Ms. Fish said. But don’t forget that you may need some sort of ground transportation, so look for packages that include it.

If you’re set on traveling to an area where there are fewer hotels, consider a short-term property rental. As of March 20, Airbnb, which has experienced a 1,000 percent surge in searches along the path of the total eclipse , still had about 40 percent of its inventory available in that zone, according to Haven Thorn, an Airbnb spokesman.

Keep an eye on the weather and stay flexible

Clouds are the eclipse chaser’s nemesis. You can pick a place with the highest likelihood of clear skies and check the forecast obsessively, but the weather is fickle. If you’re driving, be prepared to take a detour at the last minute. And when the big moment nears, pull over safely in a park or a parking lot — not on the side of the road — turn off your car and prepare to be dazzled.

Even if you decide not to go anywhere at all, you may still be able to break out those glasses and feel some of the accompanying environmental changes. Many major cities will still see a partial eclipse: 94 percent in Chicago, 90 percent in New York, 82 percent in Atlanta and 49 percent in Los Angeles.

As Ms. Fish of Expedia said, “The party’s in the sky, so all you’ve got to do is look up.”

Our Coverage of the Total Solar Eclipse

Dress for the Occasion:  What should you wear for the eclipse? Our fashion critic weighs the options , including an unexpected suggestion from scientists.

Free to View:  Six inmates in upstate New York prisons who sued the state won their lawsuit to view the eclipse , arguing it “is a religious event.” But a statewide prison lockdown during the eclipse will remain in place.

Hearing the Eclipse:  A device called LightSound is being distributed to help the blind and visually impaired experience what they can’t see .

Sky-High Hotel Prices: One Super 8 hotel in the eclipse’s path is charging $949 a night . Its normal rate is $95.

Animal Reactions : Researchers will watch if animals at zoos, homes and farms act strangely  when day quickly turns to night.

A Rare Return:  A total solar eclipse happens twice in the same place every 366 years on average. But people in certain areas will encounter April 8’s eclipse  about seven years after they were near the middle of the path of the “Great American Eclipse.”

No Power Outages:  When the sky darkens during the eclipse, electricity production in some parts of the country will drop so sharply that it could theoretically leave tens of millions of homes in the dark. In practice, hardly anyone will notice  a sudden loss of energy.

Andriy Lunin's rise from Oviedo loan to Real Madrid No. 1

the journey waits for no one

"To give you an idea of what he's like: he lived in a tiny flat, maybe 45 square meters [484 square feet], and when the pandemic hit, every day he took all the furniture out of the living room, laid down a roll of astroturf he had bought and started to train right there," Sergio Segura says. Real Oviedo's then-goalkeeping coach had just been asked about Andriy Lunin , who came to work with him as a 20-year-old Real Madrid loanee in January 2020, and now he's smiling. And not just because, four years on, the quiet kid they became so fond of is flying at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Picture the scene and it's easy to do the same, after all: to imagine a 6-foot-3 Ukrainian throwing himself around a little living room. It can't have been much fun for the neighbors above and below, but in tiny Lugo de Llanera they liked him a lot. Not least because in a simple, unremarkable town of 3,000 people 6 miles outside Oviedo -- the kind of place where everyone knows everyone and not, quite honestly, the kind of place you expect to find a footballer, not even from the second division -- he never acted like a Real Madrid player.

Not off the pitch, anyway.

- Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga, more (U.S.)

On the pitch was a different matter. On the pitch or in his living room. "20 square meters, if that," Segura says. "He bought himself a training vest, weights, a huge bin to fill with ice. He was 100% all in, all the time. Work, work, work, work. He was so methodical, so determined, absolutely dedicated. Effort, sacrifice, focus. When he came, he only asked one thing of us: to be able to train every day, without fail."

That, and a chance to play. Lunin signed for Madrid in 2018, and had been sent out on loan at Leganes and Valladolid . There, his attitude had been the same -- he had been known to sneak into the Leganes training ground to work when the place was shut -- but despite the initial optimism, actual minutes were few. He played just seven games for Leganes and two for Valladolid. When Oviedo told him it would be different if he joined them, naturally he was unconvinced. He and his father drove north to meet the sporting director in a restaurant virtually next door to the club shop and hear it for themselves.

Oviedo were as good as their word. Twenty league games were left that season; Lunin started all of them, both before and after the lockdown that paralyzed the country and left him trapped inside his own tiny flat-turned-training ground.

"That was a big step for him: to start getting lots of minutes," teammate Borja Sanchez recalls. "For a goalkeeper, getting that is even harder [than] for an outfield player, and so his time here was vital for him to develop. When he came he still didn't speak very much, he was shy, but he was great in the dressing room. I tried to help, speaking to him in English. And he helped us too: that year, he made some really incredible saves."

Oviedo were in trouble near the relegation zone in the second division. Lunin would end up being key to their salvation. And yet it hadn't started well. He had played just two cup games all season, and in his first league match, against Almeria , the very next day after his signing was announced, there was a mistake that led to a goal and another defeat.

"But what most impressed me was his 'cold blood,' the ability he had to remain calm," Segura insists. "He was very young, there's a silly goal, a gift, a mix-up between him and [defender] Alejandro Arribas , and yet he didn't let it matter. Or at least he gives the impression that it doesn't matter: maybe inside he's not as calm. He takes the pressure so well.

"Then there's just the level he has. He's big, good in the air -- although that was harder at first because he hadn't played for a while -- and he gave us so much. Quite honestly, we haven't had a goalkeeper like him. I asked him what he wanted, fed off him. He trained me as much as I trained him, or more. And he was so focused. He was also honest, very clear in what he wanted. He wanted to come, train, play and go back to Madrid."

BUT LUNIN DIDN'T JUST GO . Six months wasn't long, but it shaped him, and it would shape others too. When Oviedo won the derby against Sporting Gijon, the neighbours in his block of flats in Lugo de Llanera were waiting for him, a handful of them down in the garage with fireworks and flags. His wife Anastasiia says Oviedo is the city she would like to live in when he retires. Last week, taking advantage of the international break, she was back in the city to visit with their small son -- kitted out wearing an Oviedo tracksuit -- making a trip to the club shop. As Sanchez says: "Andriy really liked it here, the club, the city, he was very happy. We're still in contact. He takes a big interest in us. He'll arrange tickets for us. He still has feet on the floor despite taking such a big step and playing for Madrid."

Segura adds: "He's not laugh-a-minute, but he's polite, a nice, normal lad. We talked a lot, and he wanted to talk football all the time. His experiences hadn't all been that good. He was happy living in Leganes, but he hadn't played and that was what he wanted. This was the first place he really played. We were not in a great situation in the table and then the pandemic came which made it even harder. There was a limit to what we could do. But I speak to him and he's happy to have been here. He gave us so much too, and I think that left a mark on him."

As for Lunin, he left a legacy. Quite literally, as it turned out.

When Russia invaded Ukraine, Oviedo's charitable foundation, still in contact with and then in consultation with Lunin, committed to helping refugees. There were aid packages taken to Ukraine, and the first families arrived in Oviedo in March 2022. The club's head of international development, Ivan Palacios, and the foundation director, former defender Cesar Martin, drove to the Polish border in a van. The kids were put up in Fudoma, a former orphanage for miners' children built in 1929 and now a residency for the academy. The club found housing for their parents too.

Among the new residents was 14-year-old Krill Romanchenko. A promising young goalkeeper at Metallist, where Lunin had started out, he lived in Kharkiv, just 18 miles from the Russian border and had made his own way to the Asturias region. Having initially taken shelter in the basement, trying to escape the air attacks, he, his mother and his grandmother packed up the car and fled. Their destination was Spain, the plan originally to head for Valencia . Instead, Romanchenko recalls: "Andriy Lunin's dad called me. They had spoken to Oviedo and they told me I could come here to train."

They travelled over 2,500 miles, taking four days to even cross Ukraine, and left everything behind -- although Romanchenko says that fortunately many of his friends escaped to Poland. They talk often, mostly about football, and at Christmas he was even able to visit some of them. As for Romanchenko, two years on, he is still in Oviedo, playing for their Juvenil .

Among those there with him is Segura, who is now working with the youth teams. "Krill's very good, very technical. It's not a case of him still being around just because. His level is good, he's worth his place here, and there is the hope that he might make it," Segura says.

At first Romanchenko did not understand a word, but now his Spanish is improving. "It was 10 days in the car. Very, very long," he says. "Some nights we found places to stay, some we slept in the car, my mum driving the whole way, all day every day. At first I went to Fudoma, now I live in a flat with my family. They told us we could come here to practice here in Oviedo. Then [when they saw me], they said they were very happy with me. And now I'm here. The best thing is finding a home. I hope I can be here for the next few years because I like the people here, they support me every day, the coaches are very good, the staff, the other goalkeepers. I'm very happy.

"I speak to Andriy's dad often. I sometimes speak to Andriy too, although not every day because he's the goalkeeper at Real Madrid. He tells me to keep working, to follow this path."

KEEP WORKING . After six months in Oviedo, Lunin returned to Madrid. He played just one game for Madrid the following season, three years after joining the club: a 1-0 defeat to third-tier Alcoyano in the cup. The following season, he played four times: twice in the league, twice in the cup. Now, he is Real Madrid's No. 1. With first-choice keeper Thibaut Courtois suffering a setback in his recovery from a knee ligament injury, Lunin will be playing until the end of the season at least. Courtois' injury is a problem, but not the crisis it had appeared to be. Real Madrid are in safe hands -- hands which held tight to the opportunity.

"And no," Segura insists, "no one has gifted him anything. It's not easy to play when you have the best in the world ahead of you. It's not easy to be there at all. And it's not easy to not play. Courtois got injured, sure, but then they signed Kepa [Arrizabalaga] and Andriy had to wait. People say, 'Sub goalkeeper, that's easy' but you're only there because they see how good you are. They have to want to keep you. This is Real Madrid we're talking about, not just any team. If you're not getting minutes it's hard, but he has been strong and the decision [to go back and stay] has been the right one. In the few minutes he got, he showed them what he can do."

"He's in a good moment now, one where he knows he will play the next game, where he's not got the knife up against his throat every time," Segura added. "He's back with the national team too and is going to the Euros -- the other night in the playoff, he made another brilliant save. It's incredible for him, a huge leap, and it happened because he knew how to work and wait. I watch him now and madre mia, madre mia [my mother]. He's playing so well. I would love to think I could go and support him in a Champions League final. He has fought for that, he deserves it, he's been patient, which few are capable of. Andriy was in the shadows but he has proven he is ready because he has everything."

At Requexón, the training ground 10 minutes south of Lugo de Llanera, through green fields and along winding roads, they would love to see Lunin succeed long-term at Madrid. And if not, well, he could always come back. "What he has done there surprises me because it's Real Madrid, it's huge, but we have known for a long time that Lunin has a very high level, so in that sense it doesn't surprise me at all, and I'm really happy for him," Sanchez says.

There's a smile. "But if we go up to the first division, and Courtois comes back, and Andriy wants to, we'll be waiting here for him. That would be nice."

This Deeply Disturbing Found Footage Horror Movie Drags You Into the Killer's POV

This is the traumatizing watch that should prepare you for the upcoming 'In A Violent Nature.'

The Big Picture

  • The Poughkeepsie Tapes dives deep into the mind of a serial killer, showing his disturbing atrocities in graphic detail.
  • Unlike other horror films, it portrays the killer as a real, multi-dimensional human, making his actions even more terrifying.
  • Through found footage, The Poughkeepsie Tapes puts viewers in the shoes of the victims, showcasing the realistic and horrifying nature of the killer.

While horror is filled with astounding stories of survivors fighting back and triumphing over their villains, every once in a while, audiences like seeing things from a different point of view. That's why fans are excited for Chris Nash 's In A Violent Nature , an upcoming film promising to offer a startlingly deep view into the actions and mind of your typical horror slasher . But viewers don't need to wait for that film to come out to see such a terrifyingly introspective plot — they can watch The Poughkeepsie Tapes , directed by John Erick Dowdle. This deeply disturbing horror movie goes where no other found footage has before, giving an intimate view into the crimes of its central serial killer and grounding itself in his sickening actions. But even within a genre that's famous for its saturation of petrifying monsters, this film stands out by showing just how easily its murderer commits his crimes and the utter joy he takes in the destruction they leave behind. It creates a too-real depiction of one of horror's most sickening minds — and brings audiences along every step of the way.

The Poughkeepsie Tapes

In an abandoned house in Poughkeepsie, New York murder investigators uncover hundreds of tapes showing decades of a serial killer's work.

‘The Poughkeepsie Tapes’ Is Relentless in Its Depiction of a Serial Killer’s Acts

While The Poughkeepsie Tapes broke barriers for its shocking plot, it definitely wasn't the first film to make its "protagonist" a detestable figure who would be any other movie's big bad. One of the earliest mainstream attempts at this concept was Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer , directed by John McNaughton, a disturbingly nuanced investigation into the mind of someone who has dedicated his life to killing others and getting away with it. Audiences found this subversion alluring, being rightfully disgusted by the titular Henry ( Michael Rooker ) but intrigued by the complexity this movie gave what would typically be a one-dimensional villain . It was this layered presentation that made the movie even scarier because by painting horror killers like Henry as real, multi-faceted people, the plot grants his actions a level of reality sure to haunt viewers . By making these monsters appear as realistic beings, the films draw on the inherent fear that the actions onscreen could somehow be replicated in real life — making this kind of story perfect for found footage.

No One Could See This Found Footage Horror Movie for Seven Years

Found footage is a saturated but endlessly enjoyable subgenre that uses its particular view to make each movie more feasible, often delving into unnatural phenomena like the famous Paranormal Activity franchise but using the camera to create a sense of connection with the audience. Many found-footage movies have tried to use that depth to show their horror from the killer's literal POV, with some of the most famous examples being Spree , Man Bites Dog , and Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon. While each of these films presents genuinely disgusting examples of people who thrill in terrorizing others, for some reason these specific intersections of theme and medium are always tinged with some sense of comedy, alleviating the terror onscreen with dark humor that varies in success. Whatever the intention of this comedy, it often detracts from the film's actual horror — which is why The Poughkeepsie Tapes is so hauntingly effective. Rather than ease some of its audience's discomfort, it actively works to make everyone's viewing experience an excruciating one , creating some of the genre's most disgusting moments with no reprieve anywhere to be found. It is a horrifying, utterly hopeless film, and it's because of this that it accomplishes what almost all found footage movies set out to do: putting its audience in the shoes of those suffering.

'The Poughkeepsie Tapes' Is Too Real

The Poughkeepsie Tapes follows the actions and fallout of Edward Carver ( Ben Messmer ), a brutal serial killer who has eluded the police for years while committing despicable acts of murder and torture throughout the U.S. — and made sure to film every single one. In a recent raid on what's believed to be his home, authorities discover not only one of his victims, Cheryl Dempsey ( Stacy Chbosky ), just about alive, but also over 800 videotapes of the man committing senseless acts of carnage and depravity.

The content of these tapes is scary on its own, these stomach-churning scenes showing him stalking and slaying hundreds of people and even, in one truly jaw-dropping moment, sewing one person's head into another person's torso. But even with all of that visceral gore , one of the film's scariest aspects is showing the effects of these actions on an entire nation. Law enforcement can't find a trace of him, investigators are baffled, and the families of his victims are utterly broken, knowing not only that they've lost a loved one but also the potential of what he's done to them in the process. The movie showcases the man's disturbing actions and their heartbreaking results, but its real terror comes from seeing just how easy it is for Edward to carry out these despicable acts.

One of the film's most harrowing aspects is Edwards's treatment of Cheryl, starting with her abduction. This is an excruciatingly long process that sees the man break into her house and hide while the teenager and her boyfriend enjoy an evening together before finally appearing, gruesomely killing the man and beating Cheryl before kidnapping her. His tapes document the many years he spends mentally degrading the young woman, the entire time evading the police, and even at one point going to her mother's house to gloat about what he's done to her daughter.

Along with this, there are several moments of Edward being shockingly public about his crimes, leaving the authorities hints about his victims through CCTV footage and, in one heartbreaking scene, snatching a young girl feet away from her front door while she's playing in her yard. What makes The Poughkeepsie Tapes such a horrifically effective tale is how it makes it clear that Edward Carver is not some mythical monster or immortal slasher like in other horror movies. It clarifies that he is just a person with a twisted, intelligent mind, and the methods he uses to capture victims and escape justice are startlingly simple ones that play on the basics of human interaction that everyone watching is familiar with. By using the connection found footage entails, The Poughkeepsie Tapes puts viewers directly into the man and his victim's minds, granting not only a painful view of his atrocities but also a haunting wonder of whether there are people this evil — and this efficient — in their real world.

'The Poughkeepsie Tapes' Uses Found Footage in the Scariest Way Possible

The Poughkeepsie Tapes relishes in its audience's discomfort, though the movie's tendency to sensationalize its gore often endangers the complexities its plot is attempting to communicate. However, the plot utilizes this violence and the devastation that comes with it to not only reveal how horrible its central killer is but to offer a close view of the tremendous repercussions this kind of monster can cause. It isn't the first found footage horror movie to attempt to put watchers into a malicious perspective but it's the one that makes the biggest commitment to unflinchingly show how someone can easily commit such atrocities. It doesn't shy away from the graphic violence or try to lessen the disastrous impact. Instead, it heightens this horror at every level , playing with the viewer's own sense of safety by constantly reminding the audience that such acts are possible in real life. In a Violent Nature is promising to be an innovation for the genre and has fans excited for its inventive storytelling. While we wait for May 31, check out The Poughkeepsie Tapes to really get into the mind of a horror movie killer — if you can stomach it.

The Poughkeepsie Tapes is available to stream on Tubi in the U.S.
