Andrea Bocelli talks pilgrimage, the pope: 'We have a responsibility to make this world more beautiful'

You know  Andrea Bocelli as the world-class tenor with over 90 million albums sold. But did you know he's a gifted horseback rider, too?

Audiences learn many things about the star while watching Bocelli’s new three-part film, “The Journey,” in select theaters April 2-4 and April 6. In the film, Bocelli travels on horseback with family, friends and musicians along Italy’s Via Franciagena, an ancient road, from Rome to his hometown of Lajatico. Throughout the trip, the group performs at various venues along the Italian countryside and hear from locals.

Bocelli, who became completely blind at 12, has been riding horses since he was 7.

“The horse was a sort of friend for me, but also a means of transportation. So it’s very familiar to me since I’ve been doing it forever,” Bocelli, 64, said to USA TODAY while promoting the film with his wife in New York City.

Bocelli, who spoke in Italian, recalled his first horse was purchased by his father Alessandro, at the urging of his grandfather.

“(My grandfather) was ill, and he said, ‘I’d like to give my grandson a horse,’ " Bocelli remembered. “When he died, my father ran to buy me a horse.”

Bocelli’s wife, Veronica Berti Bocelli, wasn’t exactly racing to the idea of making this pilgrimage on horseback.

“It was not easy,” she admitted. “Andrea knows how to speak with (the horses). They can speak to each other in the same language.

“Sometimes my language (with the horses) is a little bit different.”

The couple’s two children, Matteo and Virginia, also join “The Journey” at different junctures. However, neither rode a horse as both are allergic.

Other guests who appear with the Bocelli in the film are Grammy winner Tori Kelly and Andrea’s childhood friend, Christiano Quaratessi. At one point, Bocelli’s lifelong friend recalls a story about the two taking Bocelli’s father’s car out for a spin. While Christiano drove, it was Bocelli who attempted to park it and ultimately scratched it.

“I taught Christiano to drive, and a bit to others,” the tenor revealed. “So, there were many episodes where my father’s car took a hit.”|

While Bocelli and his friend joke with each other about their childhood, the two also offer one of the film’s most poignant exchanges: Christiano believes that “music can unite all.” Bocelli quickly responds that he believes God is who unites.

“Every talent is a gift from the heavens, which serves to make the world a more beautiful place,” Bocelli noted. “And if it’s true what Dostoyevsky said once, that ‘Beauty will save the world,’ we artists who are the recipients of these gifts from the heavens, we have a responsibility to make this world more beautiful.”

Bocelli’s “The Journey” leans heavily on his faith; the trip begins with a blessing from Pope Francis. And it’s the tenor’s faith that got him through the COVID-19 lockdown and back on the road. Bocelli will perform for U.S. audiences again with a seven-date trek that kicks off May 9 in Los Angeles and wraps May 21 in Minneapolis.

“It was a wonderful experience which has given me so much joy,” Bocelli said of returning to the road. “During the lockdown we all lived a terrible sadness, unknown to us ever. We need to put this behind us, and I feel I’m at a good place with that effort.”

The Journey With Andrea Bocelli. Streaming Exclusively on Paramount + From Tuesday, 14 March.

The world’s most beloved tenor, Andrea Bocelli is set to release a very special series,  The Journey With Andrea Bocelli , which will premiere from Tuesday, 14 March on Paramount+. Across three episodes and a 90-minute special, the series follows Bocelli as he travels Italy’s Via Francigena on horseback to rediscover some of life’s greatest joys.

Throughout Bocelli’s spiritual pilgrimage along the ancient trail, historical waypoints immerse viewers in the series’ key themes: peace, purpose, facing fear, hope, restoration, and relationships. Each episode features a different Italian backdrop, taking Bocelli from St Peter’s Basilica through Tuscany’s rolling hills, towards the medieval fortress of Monteriggioni and on to his hometown of Lajatico.

Along the way, Bocelli reflects on life’s biggest questions with friends and family, and performs with talented artists, including: 2Cellos, 40 Fingers, Beatrice Venezi, Clara Barbier Serrano (Andrea Bocelli Foundation Scholarship Winner), Katherine Jenkins, Matteo Bocelli, Michael W. Smith, Ramin Bahrami, Tauren Wells, TAYA, and Tori Kelly.

The 90-minute special combines every performance from the series with highlights from Bocelli and his musical companions’ travels along the Via Francigena.

The Journey With Andrea Bocelli is co-produced by TBN, Impact Productions, and Cineroma. The series is executive-produced by Matt and Laurie Crouch and Andrea and Veronica Bocelli, with Gaetano Morbiolo and Paolo Sodi serving as co-directors.

Journey with Andrea Bocelli in thrilling music special this Holy Week

A new documentary that follows Andrea Bocelli and his wife Veronica as they travel the Via Francigena on horseback, meeting a star-studded lineup of faith-based singers along the way, is coming to theaters in time for Holy Week.

Titled THE JOURNEY: A Music Special from Andrea Bocelli , this 90-minute feature film combines breathtaking Italian landscapes, world-class musical performances, and musings on the virtues of religious music, silence, and family to present the must-see faith film of the season . 

This film is an incredibly personal project for Bocelli, who opens himself up to audiences for rare glimpses into his life and family, which are revealed through conversations with his wife, Veronica, and the many guest artists who join him for stints of the trip. In the beginning of the film, for example, Bocelli reveals that his first horse was a gift from his late father just prior to his death , which immediately sets an intimate tone for THE JOURNEY.

As the couple ride through the quiet countryside, Bocelli remarks on the value of silence, in regards to both music and faith development. Here, Bocelli becomes a full fledged philosopher, likening the silence between notes of a song to the silences between moments in our lives. It is in these moments that the music and its rhythm take form, and similarly it is the time in which we can bring form to our own faith through such prayerful interaction with the Almighty.

As the Bocellis proceed through the Via Francigena, the famed Italian pilgrimage route that extends more than 1,000 miles and is Europe’s oldest pilgrimage route, they are joined by many high profile Christian singers. The first guest of the film is Tori Kelly, who seems like a natural horse rider. We don’t want to spoil the set list, but we will note that Kelly sings two songs, one supported by a phenomenal Gospel choir and the other a duet with Bocelli, accompanied by the renowned guitar quartet, 40 Fingers . 

The next guest to join Bocelli is Grammy Award winning pianist Michael W. Smith, who performs several songs and even shows off his skills on the organ in a quiet Italian church. He and Bocelli sit down for a conversation on the pride they take in performing music of faith, likening their craft to a vocation. Smith’s candle-lit performance in an ancient Roman ruin was among the most memorable visuals of the film.

While we’re talking about visuals, it’s hard to overstate the beauty of THE JOURNEY’s cinematography. Wherever they go, be it on a dirt road on Italy’s rolling hills, at the Vatican, inside various storied churches, or at Bocelli’s villa, this film is a veritable feast for the eyes . This too speaks to the personal nature of the film, as we see a blind man continuing to deepen his faith, even as he cannot see the awe inspiring sites designed to spur devotion within the faithful. 

As the film progresses, singer Tauren Wells joins the group, during which he reveals that he had never been on a horse before the filming . Be that as it may, he rides well and the two share a conversation on the transformative power of music, before Wells gives a thrilling performance of one of his best songs, accompanying himself on piano. 

Soon after, Bocelli meets up with Taya, of Hillsong UNITED, who sings one of her most famous songs while accompanied by Bocelli on piano. Here Bocelli shows off his multi-instrumental talent, all the while adding rich harmonies to support Taya. 

Our favorite moment of the film was when Andrea met up with his daughter, Virginia, at the Basilica of Santa Christina. Here, Bocelli remarks upon the virtue of fatherhood and the pride he takes in passing his faith down to his children . The shots of Bocelli taking his daughter around to share various aspects of Catholicism are simply heartwarming. Bocelli also shares a similar moment with his son Matteo, who reads his father a touching letter he wrote himself.

All of these elements and guest singers come together for a final song that cements THE JOURNEY as a monumental and thrilling musical extravaganza. It’s hard to call it the best song of the show, as THE JOURNEY is just brimming with some of the most high quality religious songs of both the classical and contemporary songbooks , but the scope of the performance is practically dizzying as the camera bounces around to the various beautiful settings of the film. 

We could go on and on about the immense beauty which THE JOURNEY packs into just an hour and a half, but words are insufficient to convey such tremendously touching audio and visuals . Instead, we’ll highly recommend that all lovers of music, art, and the Catholic faith see this excellent documentary on the big screen, where it will be running in theaters across the US from April 2-6.

Universal Music Publishing Group has announced that legendary tenor Andrea Bocelli has been signed to an exclusive, global publishing agreement through UMPG's Classics & Screen department.

One of the most successful and influential classical singers in modern history, Bocelli this year celebrates his 30th anniversary in music. Through the new agreement, UMPG will represent Bocelli's future works, as well as his latest album, “A Family Christmas.”

Having set countless sales records, Andrea Bocelli has sold over 90 million albums to-date and generated more than 16 billion streams. The celebrated tenor has become a longstanding ambassador for Italian culture around the world and drew worldwide attention in 2020 with his record-breaking ‘Music for Hope' event which became one of the biggest musical live stream performances of all time. Across his illustrious career, Bocelli has received six GRAMMY Award nominations, six Latin Grammy Award nominations, a Golden Globe, seven Classical BRITs, seven World Music Awards, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

One of the world's most recognisable voices, Bocelli has performed for four Presidents of the United States of America, three Popes, the British Royal Family, and many Prime Ministers. He has sung at high-profile ceremonies including the Olympics, the World Cup, the UEFA Euro 2020 Opening Ceremony, the Premier League final, the Ballon d'Or, the Universal Expo in Shanghai in 2010 and in Milan in 2015. The new publishing agreement builds upon Bocelli's historic relationship with Universal Music Group (UMG), the world's leading music-based entertainment company, having distributed his albums for over a quarter of a century through its longstanding relationship with Sugar Music. In 2021, Bocelli signed directly to UMG for the first time after more than 25 years of collaboration (in particular with Decca Records), in a global, multifaceted recording agreement. All of his previous recordings will remain under Sugar Music, in an exclusive license agreement with UMG.

Across his meteoric career, Bocelli's works have become hallmarks of cultural significance. From his early career singing with Luciano Pavarotti, to major international success with “Con te partirò (Time To Say Goodbye)” with Sarah Brightman, “The Prayer” with Celine Dion, and “Vivo per lei”, among many others. Musically gifted from birth, Andrea Bocelli is one of the most celebrated singers in modern history. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Opera Singing from the “G. Puccini” Music Conservatory in La Spezia and a Bachelor's degree in Law from the University of Pisa, Italy. He was honored by the Italian Republic with a Grande Ufficiale Italian Order of Merit (Grand Officer of the Italian Republic) and he was bestowed the title of Ambassador of the Italian Republic of San Marino. During the Opening Ceremony of the World Economic Forum 2015 in Davos (Switzerland), he was given the prestigious Crystal Award, in recognition of his work an artist and philanthropist. Abad's early career was marked by her role in the youth show 'Ang TV.' She gained popularity starring in teen-oriented films and TV series, often alongside John Lloyd Cruz. Their pairing is fondly remembered in the series 'Tabing Ilog,' which aired from 1999 to 2003.

In 2006, Abad took on the role of Cynthia in 'Super Inggo,' a prequel fantasy, and continued with its sequel 'Super Inggo 1.5: Ang Bagong Bangis' in 2007.
