Famous for being the real Last Kingdom Bamburgh Castle is launching new tours for fans of the cult Saxon saga along with a Viking School for budding Uhtreds.

Once home to the saint kings and queens of Northumbria and the inspiration for the hit historical TV series based on Bernard Cornwell’s The Saxon Stories, Bamburgh Castle is to host a series of exclusive new Last Kingdom tours.

Award-winning Viking expert and tour guide Robert Lundgren-Jones – known as Ragnar the Viking – will bring history to life and show how Uhtred climbed the ladder of power at Bamburgh to become allies with the Vikings and the King of England.

As well as comparing the fantasy of the famous Last Kingdom Netflix Series to the truth and finding out about battle scenes filmed nearby, to crown it all, tour-goers will get the chance to become Queen or King of the North on a warrior throne inside the castle grounds.

A must for fans of the series as well as anyone wanting to discover more about Bamburgh’s extraordinary Saxon history, Last Kingdom Tours take place at 11:00 and 13:30 on Wednesday 17th August, Sunday 28th August, Wednesday 31st August. Tours last two hours are priced £29.95 for adults and £14.95 for children. Tickets include full admission into the castle staterooms and grounds.

Meanwhile budding young Vikings can find out if they have what it takes to become a warrior at the castle’s Bebbanburg Viking School.

Join the Bebbanburg tribe with Ragnar, a young Viking Warrior, on the very spot where real Vikings once stood. Children will be able to name and yield their own sword, find out who has the loudest battle cry and take part in warrior tasks to be crowned Queen or King of the Bebbanburg Tribe.

Bebbanburg Viking School takes place at 11:00, 12 noon, 13:00 and 14:00 on Wednesday 10th August and Wednesday 24th August.

Enrolment for warriors-in-waiting aged five and over is £3 per child in addition to Bamburgh Castle general admission. Place numbers are limited and allocated on a first-come basis.

Francis Watson-Armstrong, owner of Bamburgh Castle said: “Bamburgh has an absolutely phenomenal history and is famous for being the real Bebbanburg and inspiration for the Last Kingdom series.

“We are delighted to have teamed up with Northumberland’s finest Viking Ragnar – the alias of historian and tour guide Robert Lundgren Jones – so people can follow in the footsteps of Uhtred the Bold on the very site where his story unfolded.

“We hope younger children with enjoy learning more about the castle’s amazing history and have fun being put through their warrior paces with Ragnar on the very spot where real Vikings once stood with our new Viking School. I’ll have to look out, for who knows, they may be crowned king or queen of Bamburgh Castle itself!”

The Lost Kingdom is absolutely fantastic. Lots to see and do for dinosaur lovers. The queues for most rides our boys could do were 5-10 mins. The triceratops rollercoaster was a firm favourite!!

The Lost Kingdom was great for our little dino fan with a variety of rides for all ages. The Dinosaur encounter was brilliant.

We loved the Lost Kingdom with the DINO Chase ride toddlers can go on. I would highly recommend visiting the park for a great time.

Triceratops.

A firm Lost Kingdom favourite! This herbivore known for its large skull with three horns on its forehead is the inspiration for our Dino Chase ride, and you might just spot a few more as you make your way around the park.

Brachiosaurus

This gentle giant is part of the sauropod family, known for their long necks and tails. Standing at over 12 metres tall, they may seem scary, but don’t worry - these chaps are more interested in munching plants than munching YOU!

Pterodactyl

These flying reptiles terrorised the skies millions of years ago and have landed here in the Lost Kingdom dinosaur adventure park! But now, YOU can actually take to the skies with these beasts on the Flight of the Pterosaur suspended roller coaster!

Small they may be, but if you’ve seen the Jurassic Park film franchise, you’ll know these carnivorous dinosaurs with their sickle-shaped claws would most definitely NOT have made a suitable family pet! Feel the speed of these ‘running lizards’ on our Velociraptor roller coaster - if you dare!

Tyrannosaurus Rex

The star of the show! No visit to the Lost Kingdom theme park would be complete without an encounter with this fearsome legend. Come and meet a T-Rex for real (sort of!) at the ALIVE! Dinosaur Encounter. Visit the dinosaur enclosure to check the daily show times for this exciting and nerve-wracking encounter.

Tour Introduction

Travelling and walking through some of the finest English landscapes, we will try to understand how Anglo-Saxon kingship worked during this crucial period in English history as the most famous son of Wessex, Alfred the Great, fought for survival against his Viking enemies. Examining the remains of ancient fortifications and taking the high ground as we search for likely battlefields, the tour allows us to explore the reality behind Bernard Cornwell’s popular novels, The Last Kingdom and The Pale Horseman, as Alfred moved from near total defeat to crucial victory. Situated in the heart of historic Wessex, we will enjoy stunning scenery, a series of short walks and one or two country pub sandwich lunches. Our expert historian will be Professor Ryan Lavelle, author of a range of publications on the lands and politics of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, including Alfred’s Wars(2010). He was also historical adviser on the BBC TV adaptation The Last Kingdom

Alfred of Wessex (871–99) is renowned as one of the great kings of medieval English history and is the only English king to be remembered as ‘the Great’. A major part of this reputation is built on his military leadership of the West Saxon kingdom, the last of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms to survive the Viking onslaught of the ninth century. The youngest of five brothers to rule Wessex in turbulent times, Alfred’s accession to the throne of Wessex in 871 took place in a ‘year of battles’, the most important of which was the Battle of Ashdown, when the young prince proved his mettle against his enemies. A series of treaties with the Vikings bought time for the West Saxons but, after a surprise attack in the winter of 878, the king took refuge and finally rallied his forces to victory at the Battle of Ethandun. The peace treaty which resulted allowed the king to build a series of fortifications throughout his kingdom, which provided the heartland of the West Saxon kingdom with the strength it needed to withstand future Viking attacks.

Day 1 – Winchester We meet at midday to enjoy a sandwich lunch at our hotel in Winchester, the city most often associated with the memory of Alfred the Great and our home for the first two nights. Spend the afternoon on a walking tour of the city centre where we explore the layout of the old Roman city as it was converted to the master plan of a West Saxon burh. We also visit the magnificent Cathedral with its excellent Kings and Scribes exhibition. Here we learn about the origins of the Cathedral in Anglo Saxon times and its special importance as a key ecclesiastical centre. A relaxing evening starts with welcome drinks followed by a well-earned dinner and introductory talk.

Day 2 - Wantage to Wallingford We start the day at Wantage, now in Oxfordshire, Alfred’s birthplace, on the northern edge of the West Saxon kingdom. A short drive to the Ridgeway, one of the most important routes across northern Wessex, helps us to understand how the king’s childhood home became threatened by Viking forces. We take a gentle walk along this ancient route (4 kms) to examine locations associated with the battle of Ashdown (871) and enjoy a sweeping panorama of the Anglo-Saxon landscape fought over between West Saxons and Danes. Thence to Wallingford, to examine a second Alfredian burh site before visiting a second, and perhaps, more convincing site for the battle of Ashdown overlooking the Thames Valley.

Day 3 – Winchester and Salisbury We spend the morning enjoying Winchester’s superb museums where we get close to Alfred’s burgh and its legacy. First we visit the fantastic AD 878 Immersive Experience where we step back in time to Anglo-Saxon England before perusing the rich collection at Winchester City and Westgate Museums. After lunch we drive the short distance to the lovely town of Salisbury to tour the ancient stronghold of Old Sarum; with over 2,000 years of history this was the site of Salisbury’s first cathedral. The site was used during the disastrous reign of Alfred’s great- great-grandson, Æthelred ‘the Unready’ (978–1016). Standing atop its ramparts will help us to understand the tragic epilogue to Alfred’s story as the attacks on southern England took their toll during the ‘Second Viking Age’ and the English kingdom finally fell to a Danish King, Cnut, in 1016. We then visit Salisbury Museum where we view some superb Anglo-Saxon artefacts including the rare Warminster Jewel, dating from the time of Alfred. We proceed to our Hotel in Shaftesbury – 2 nights.

Day 4 - Athelney, Alfred’s Tower, Ethandun The drama of Alfred’s story really comes alive when we travel to the area overlooking Selwood, where the three shires of Somerset, Wiltshire and Dorset meet and ‘Ecgberht’s Stone’ was once used to assemble the forces of Wessex. We ascend the eighteenth-century ‘Alfred’s Tower’, overlooking this ancient landscape, and then continue to the ancient Bratton Camp with its White Horse and stunning views, near the small Wiltshire village of Edington, to discuss the most likely site of the bloody battle of Ethandun, which saw Alfred’s 878 victory. We continue west to where Alfred was forced into exile into the Somerset Levels. A visit to the refuge upon raised ground at Athelney, ‘the Princes’ Isle’, helps us to understand how, surrounded by marshes, the king was able to hold this last western toe-hold of his embattled kingdom. Return to Shaftesbury.

Day 5 – Wareham, Shaftesbury Abbey, Badbury Rings This morning we explore the remains of Shaftesbury Abbey, built by Alfred around 888, with its fine modern statue, and visit the museum with its Saxon exhibits. We will have time to enjoy stunning views over the Blackmore Vale before driving to the Dorset town of Wareham, where Vikings used subterfuge to escape the West Saxons in 876. Thence to the Iron Age fort at Badbury Rings occupied by Alfred’s son, Edward the Elder, in 899 as he opposed the revolt of Aethelwold following his father’s death. Return to Winchester mid afternoon.

Two New AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM TV Spots Tease Black Manta's Vengeance Tour

Two New AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM TV Spots Tease Black Manta's Vengeance Tour

Aquaman and Black Manta are headed for an all-out showdown, and two new TV spots tease what audiences should expect to see this December.

As we draw closer to the December release of  Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom , the final entry in the polarizing DCEU, two new TV spots have surfaced that originally aired during the NBA season kickoff. Check them out below.

While the film was plagued by rumors of behind-the-scenes turmoil, director James Wan (The Conjuring, Furious 7) recently went on record to refute those claims,  calling them "noise" generated to elicit clicks.

He also went on to add that he'd be game to return for a third entry, but that's looking increasingly unlikely as the most prevalent rumor surrounding the film's lead star, Jason Momoa (Dune, Fast X), is that he's signed on to portray Lobo in James Gunn and Peter Safran's revamp of the DC cinematic universe.

However, if the Aquaman sequel proves successful at the box office, don't rule out WB singing up Wan to helm one of the previously announced titles that comprise Chapter 1 of Gunn's Gods and Monsters reboot. Given Wan's horror roots, he'd likely feel right at home taking on the planned Swamp Thing film.

The film is directed by Wan and written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (The Conjuring 2, Aquaman). Momoa stars as Aquaman, Patrick Wilson (Watchmen, Insidious: The Red Door) portrays Orm Marius, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Candyman, The Matrix Revolutions) plays the menacing Black Manta, and Nicole Kidman (The Hours, Big Little Lies) returns as Aquaman's mother, Atlanna.

The film also stars Amber Heard (The Stand, The Danish Girl) as Mera,  Dolph Lundgren (Expend4bles) as Nereus, Temuera Morrison (The Book of Boba Fett) as Tom Curry, and Randall Park (WandaVision) as Dr. Stephen Shin. Additionally,  Pilou Asbæk (Ghost in the Shell, Uncharted) has an undisclosed role in the film.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom hits North American theaters on December 20, 2023.

Having failed to defeat Aquaman the first time, Black Manta, still driven by the need to avenge his father’s death, will stop at nothing to take Aquaman down once and for all. This time Black Manta is more formidable than ever before, wielding the power of the mythic Black Trident, which unleashes an ancient and malevolent force. To defeat him, Aquaman will turn to his imprisoned brother Orm, the former King of Atlantis, to forge an unlikely alliance. Together, they must set aside their differences in order to protect their kingdom and save Aquaman’s family, and the world, from irreversible destruction.

Neil Young to Perform Lost ‘Cortez The Killer’ Verses on Summer Tour With Crazy Horse

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

When Neil Young hits the road this summer with Crazy Horse, he’s planning on performing “Cortez The Killer” with verses that have been missing from the song for 50 years. “Just a couple of days ago, I found the other verses,” Young told fans Monday afternoon during a Zoom with paid subscribers to the Neil Young Archives . “Just the lyrics…We may have those lost lyrics in the show, which will be fun for me.”

When the band cut the song originally in a California house near Zuma Beach, the power to the recording console died in the middle of the take, though the band was completely oblivious. They felt it was a prefect performance. “Don’t shoot yourselves,” producer David Briggs told them when they came out of the studio. “But the power went off, and we missed one verse.” Briggs told them which verse they had lost. “I never liked that one anyway,” Young replied.

In a 2012 interview with Rolling Stone , Crazy Horse guitarist Frank “Poncho” Sampedro recalled cutting “Cortez The Killer” shortly after he joined the band. “It was a sunny day at Zuma Beach, and this guy came by, and I smoked angel dust with him,” he said. “And then Neil came up and said, ‘Let’s try this song,’ We never played it, and I was like, ‘Oh, shit.’ If you listen to the first recording, I thought the second chord was the first chord. Neil was emphasizing the first one, I was emphasizing the second one. [Laughs]. But you know, it goes around in a circle, so it doesn’t really matter too much.”

After Covid hit in 2019, Young took a break from the road for three years. When he emerged last summer for a solo tour, he played only outdoor venues. He’s playing 24 shows with Crazy Horse over the next few months, and they’re all outdoors as well. “We gotta be careful,” Young said on the fan Zoom. “I don’t know the stats on it, but I imagine if you look at a regular group of 15,000 or 20,000 people, just randomly from around the world, and then look at 15,000 or 20,000 people that all went to a show, and how many of them got Covid, I think you’d found people that went to a show inside have a lot more of a chance of getting sick. I don’t really need to do that. Willie Nelson told me he’s only playing outside now. I felt that was a good idea, so that’s what I’m doing.”

Young largely dodged questions about what songs he plans on playing this summer with Crazy Horse, though he noted that he enjoyed playing Tonight’s The Night, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere , and Ragged Glory at intimate club gigs late last year. “The songs that the Horse plays are so simple you can go almost anywhere with them,” he said. “A lot of them only have two or three chords in them, and they just repeat. There’s another song that has four chords in it. We’re going to try that. The Horse has [rarely] played ‘I’m The Ocean’ before. I think we’re going do that one. But we should be able to jam for a long time on all that stuff. I’m looking forward to that.”

O.j. simpson executor says ron goldman's family will get 'zero, nothing' from estate, trump reportedly nods off while attending first day of criminal trial, drake responds to rick ross' nose-job claim, warns rapper after diss, 'don't worry we'll handle it'.

Young also gave an update on the upcoming Archives III box set. “It’s different from the other two,” he said. “It has a different approach. There’s more audio vérité in it. We have real-time things happening that people haven’t heard. There’s one scene is myself and Nicolette [Larson], Linda [Ronstadt], and [David] Briggs. We’re sitting around a table, and I’m singing all the songs that are on the next record to them for the first time. And then they start singing along. It’s just a live thing of people sitting around a table. I think it’s very interesting to hear them…There’s really a really cool film in there called Across The Water that is a great Crazy Horse film. It’s really big. It’s bigger than the other volumes.”

According to current plans, Volume III will cover a 30-year time span. Volume IV will do the same. “Rather than keep putting out volumes that are smaller,” he said. “We’re going to put out IV and that’ll be it. We’re starting on the last one. It’s a monumental task.”

Lost kingdom of the Kalaga-Putuan Crescent

For over 13 centuries, a sophisticated maritime kingdom flourished in the southeastern Philippine archipelago. Centered in Butuan (Caraga region), this kingdom, the “Kalaga-Putuan Crescent” (KPC), formed a vital maritime trade triangle with the Srivijaya in Palembang (now Indonesia) and Vijaya in Champa (now Vietnam).

This remarkable history is revealed by Baldomero M. Olivera et al. (2024) in their study, “Reconstructing Philippine history before 1521: the Kalaga Putuan Crescent and the Austronesian maritime trade network” (SciEnggJ, Vol. 17:01, pp. 71-85). Their research draws upon various forms of evidence: Chinese ceramics dating back to the Six Dynasties period, historical textual records, genetic evidence, and cultural artifacts that demonstrate KPC’s advanced maritime expertise, enabling sustained trade and cultural exchange across the South China Sea and into the Indian Ocean.

Traces of a vanished culture. Most Filipinos first encounter this lost kingdom through the writings of Antonio Pigafetta, who chronicled Ferdinand Magellan’s explorations. Pigafetta’s diaries describe a lavish feast hosted by the King of Mazaua, served on precious porcelain. He also recounts his encounter with the “King of Butuan and Caraga,” a figure of impressive wealth and refinement. Pigafetta’s detailed observations provide vivid evidence of a once-thriving, cosmopolitan culture.

One intriguing point is that Magellan’s slave, Enrique, could converse with the King of Mazaua. This suggests a shared Austronesian trade language used across maritime centers of the time.

The Kalaga-Putuan Crescent: A trade hub. The KPC takes its name from its crescent shape encompassing key locations in Bicol, Eastern Visayas, Northern and Southern Mindanao. The main points being what is now Gubat, Catarman, Oras, Abuyog, San Francisco/Placer, Tandag, Butuan/Nasipit, Hinatuan, Loreto, Tagaloan, and Baroy.

Within this area, significant archeological finds point to KPC’s importance. Sites such as the Balangay and Ivory Seal Sites, the Esperanza Vajralasa Site, and the Magroyong Gold Site have yielded a vast collection of gold objects and Chinese ceramics dating from the third to eighth centuries. This assemblage of early Chinese ceramics is remarkably richer than similar discoveries outside of China.

Interestingly, Tang Dynasty ceramics found in Balabac, Palawan, suggest the island may have served as a key waypoint in the maritime trade route connecting the KPC, Champa, and Srivijaya.

Networks of exchange. Olivera et al. argue that the KPC played a pivotal role within an extensive Austronesian trade network that ultimately stretched to the Mediterranean and Europe. Goods like spices (cloves, nutmeg), gold, ceramics, exotic shells, pearls, and other marine products flowed along these routes, reaching China, India, the Middle East, and beyond.

The thriving KPC maritime trade was enabled by advanced sailing technology developed a millennia earlier in the Philippine archipelago. The discovery of balangay boats in the Butuan area, dating back to before 1140 CE, offers tangible proof of this maritime prowess. Historical records, including the official Song Documents, further confirm a formal trade link between the Chinese Empire and the Kingdom of Putuan in 1011. Chinese sources indicate that large ships carrying hundreds of passengers and vast quantities of cargo plied these routes. This reflects the scale of trade at the time.

DNA evidence from Guam, located 2,000 kilometers away across the open ocean, confirms the remarkable seafaring capabilities of early Philippine archipelago inhabitants. This migration underscores the expertise necessary to sustain long-distance trade networks like the one centered around the KPC.

Hindu-Buddhist influences. The connections between the KPC, Champa, and Srivijaya are further supported by shared interactions with the Chinese court and by treasures discovered within the crescent. The Surigao Gold Treasure and other artifacts showcase Hindu-Buddhist influences prevalent across the three kingdoms.

A window into the past and a hunger for significance. The lost kingdom of the Kalaga-Putuan Crescent offers a captivating glimpse into the Philippines’ rich prehistory, a story that extends back at least 40,000 years. Olivera et al. remind us that the KPC’s flourishing trade networks existed within a broader context of human migration and cultural exchange across Southeast Asia. It’s important to acknowledge, however, that the Philippine academic community continues to engage in vigorous debates about the sources, nature, and timing of these migrations, with various theories vying to explain the archipelago’s prehistory.

This hunger for understanding our past isn’t merely academic. By piecing together the rise and fall of past empires and political entities like the KPC, we may glean valuable insights for navigating similar challenges in our own time. The very seas that once facilitated trade and cultural exchange, like the South China Sea, are now potential flashpoints for future conflicts. Understanding the interconnectedness of the past can inform our approach to fostering cooperation and ensuring a more peaceful future in this vital region.
