The iconic YEMA Traveller with integrated bracelet returns in a dressy collection featuring a honeycomb dial in soft summer colours and refined steel applied markers and hands. Equipped with our In-house Caliber YEMA2000, this new Urban Traveller collection has been designed as a comfortable and elegant everyday sports watch.

the urban traveller

STYLISH HONEYCOMB DIAL

The Urban Traveller dial features a charming honeycomb surface finish with polished applied markers, in perfect harmony with the hour and minute steel hands. The sporty design language of the sweeping second hand reinforces the luxury sports watch positioning of this collection.

HISTORIC CASE-BACK

The great level of detail and finishes overall is also found on the steel case-back. Satin-polished and circular brushed finishes elegantly surround YEMA’s historic crest, which is carefully forged into the case-back with a hydraulic press, ensuring a qualitative and refined finishing.

the urban traveller

STUNNING QUALITY OF EXECUTION

The steel case takes the form of an asymmetrical octagon. We have used the complex case geometry to our advantage by executing every single angle with the same set of alternating brushed-polished finishes, that captures the eye and gives great elegance and singularity to the case while preserving the marked sporting spirit. The bezel is inspired by a YEMA Sous-Marine model from the 1980’s and is made from a single piece of stainless steel, yet it has three distinct finishes, with the top and bottom bevels featuring an elegant vertical brushing and an entirely polished transition where the bezel’s horizontal and vertical surfaces meet.

These Are My All-time Favorite White Linen Pants for Hot, Humid Destinations — Plus, 13 More Options From $27

They’re airy, not see-through, and easily the best thing I packed for Southeast Asia.

We independently evaluate all recommended products and services. If you click on links we provide, we may receive compensation. Learn more .

Travel + Leisure / Madison Woiten

I’m a frequent traveler who’s typically pretty chill about packing — I might start an hour before I plan to head to the airport and figure if I forget anything, I can just buy what I need at my destination. But last summer, when I was tasked with picking out what I’d wear for a whirlwind press trip to Southeast Asia (spending four nights in Phuket, Thailand, one night in Bangkok, and two nights near Ubud in Bali, Indonesia), I definitely felt more pressure to really get it right. There were seemingly endless plane rides ahead, some fancy dinners, and much exploring to be done, with little down time to pick up new outfits. Also, it was June and 90 degrees Fahrenheit in Thailand. Truly breathable clothing was essential, to say the least.

All of this leads me to the summer travel wardrobe staple that has saved me whenever I’m faced with these more crucial packing moments: the Angie Crop Wide Leg Pant from Splendid. These high-waisted, comfy drawstring white linen pants (which you can get at Nordstrom) come with me on all of my warm-weather trips, and they were especially clutch during my travels across Southeast Asia. They’re incredibly light and airy, and somehow didn’t hold onto any sweat smells even after being worn at least five times throughout my trip. Made from 73 percent lyocell and 27 percent linen, they withstand creasing more than purely linen pants (always a plus while traveling).

Splendid Angie Crop Wide Leg Pant

During my trip, my group stayed at Banyan Tree Veya in Phuket, Banyan Tree Bangkok , and Buahan, a Banyan Tree Escape in Bali. These resorts — and the people working and staying there — are some of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen, so I wanted to look nice enough to fit in. In other words, this was a once-in-a-lifetime trip, where I planned to take about 3 million photos, so selecting solid, workhorse pieces that were easy to mix and match, dress up or down, and could keep me cool, was key. I’m also a staunch carry-on-only gal, so I have a high standard for what makes it in my small suitcase. These pants fit the bill. They’re classic and stylish, which meant I could use them on tourist outings in Phuket spent walking through steamy markets and sight-seeing on tuk-tuks, and to upscale lagoon-boat-ride dinners. For daytime, I’d style them with sandals, a one-shoulder tank, and a scarf (for coverage at temples), and at night, I’d pair them with chunky wedges, a colorful halter top, a woven belt, and a matching linen button-down. The slightly cropped length is great for shorter people like me (I’m 5’4”), who often deal with dragging hems.

Linen basics certainly aren’t anything new, but as any tropical traveler knows, finding the perfect pair of “Big Pants,” aka flowy but flattering, wrinkle-resistant, and not see-through bottoms you can wear with anything, is no small task. After sweating my way around Thailand and Bali in the heat and humidity, trying to look hot without feeling it, I’m confident that these are the ones you buy to end your search for good.

Travel + Leisure / Kristin Canning

Everything I have from Splendid, which was founded with the goal of creating the ultimate comfy T-shirt (something I can definitely get behind!), has really impressed me when it comes to quality, has lasted through years of regular wear, and is totally worth the investment. They have a plethora of versatile and durable basics that make them a great brand to peruse for solid travel items — I have these pants in white and black, and I want to get even more.

Better than all the benefits of the fabric blend, style, and construction of these pants was the way they made me feel. Big Pants are a lifestyle. When you have them on, you just feel free, like you should be dancing near a palm tree, drinking out of a coconut, or swaying in a hammock. Buahan, the adults-only Banyan Tree resort in Bali that’s made up of 16 private villas tucked into a jungle hillside (there are no walls separating you from nature, only curtains), is frankly the most stunning destination I’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting, but it’s not a place you really dress up. It’s sexy and relaxed, and in these pants, paired with a patterned scarf tied up as a top, I felt comfortable with and appreciative of my body, and I melted right into the sensual vibe. Certain clothes can get you into vacation mode mentally, help you transition into the laid-back version of yourself more easily. For me, these pants have that power. Whether I was trekking to the Tjampuhan Waterfall, exploring rice paddies filled with fireflies, or touring Taro, one of the oldest villages in Bali, and enjoying some jamu and laklak, this pant was my trusted companion.

If you’re feeling inspired to stock up on some breezy linen pants for your upcoming summer trips, the ones below are other gorgeous options I’ve been eyeing, in all kinds of styles and colors, and at various price points. May you be kicking back in Big Pants soon!

Abercrombie Women’s Linen-Blend Pull-On Pant

Abercrombie & Fitch

These minimalist, linen-viscose blend pants are totally effortless. They’re lined and have a hidden drawcord for more adjustability. Reviewers love ’em and say they’re “not see-through at all” — a major feat for any white pants.

Athleta Women’s Retreat Wide Leg Linen Pant

Athleta makes some of my all-time favorite workout leggings and bras, so I trust that these 100 percent linen pants have a comfortable and flattering fit. This pair stands out thanks to its split hem and zippered front pockets.

Quince Women’s 100% European Linen Pants

These mid-rise, ankle-cropped pants also feature sustainable linen sourced from Europe for a great price (which Quince is known for). If you’re dipping your toe (er, leg) into the 100 percent linen pants world for the first time, these laid-back, affordable capris are a great place to start.

Madewell Women’s Harlow Wide-Leg Pant in 100% Linen

I’m obsessed with the blue and white striped pattern on these Madewell trousers (the distant surplus color is equally as gorgeous). They’re a more tailored option, with belt loops, subtle pleats, and buttoned back pockets, but the wide leg and light fabric keeps them breezy. Wear them with the matching Scoop Neck Crop Tank and you have yourself the ultimate flattering vacation dinner outfit.

Everlane Women’s Linen Easy Pant

These 100 percent linen trousers, with their pull-on waistband and sleek, straight-leg fit, are the definition of casual chic — perfect for dressing up or down. They’re full length without pooling on the ground, and I love that they can be paired with the Linen High-Neck Tank to make a matching set, so you can devote exactly zero energy to putting a cute, breathable outfit together when you’re on vacation. Also cool: The fabric is made from flax fibers that are cultivated according to the European Confederation of Flax and Hemp, which means they’re sourced from Belgium, France, and the Netherlands via a more sustainable, environmentally friendly operation.

Utcoco Women’s Cotton Linen Drawstring High Waisted Pants

These wide-leg, drawstring pants — made from an 80/20 linen-cotton blend — are the perfect loose-fitting, lightweight bottoms for tourist-ing around coastal towns and hanging out at the beach (particularly in this soothing sage green color). I’d pair them with a white tied-up T-shirt or a bikini top and a breezy, open button-down.

Anrabess Women’s Linen Pants

These super high-waisted, slightly cropped, flowy drawstring pants (made from 30 percent linen and 70 percent rayon), look like the pants you need when you’re planning to eat a bunch of delicious, new-to-you foods at three different restaurants in one day and may end up just a wee bit bloated. They look extremely comfortable, flattering, and easy; the ruffled waist is a cute detail, too.

Athleta Women’s Retreat Linen Jogger

Made with 100 percent linen, these jogger-style pants (with the same zippered front pockets as the wide-leg pair from Athleta) would look cute with tennis shoes, chunky sandals, or even wedges. If you love sweats with cuffed ankles, these are an elevated (and airier) swap that will still feel comfortable on vacay.

Anrabess Women’s Linen Palazzo Pants

Seemingly designed specifically for lounging on a pool chaise in the tropics, these 70 percent rayon, 30 percent linen pants are begging to be packed for your next trip. The thick, smocked waistband looks extremely stretchy and comfortable, and I love the extensive range of colors. The only downside: The care instructions recommend dry cleaning only.

Iximo Women’s Tapered Pants

If you’re looking for a tapered pant that leans more trouser than jogger, this is it. The 100 percent linen bottoms have a slim fit, and a unique waistband with a drawstring in front and elastic scrunch in the back. One note: Care instructions call for hand washing only.

Madewell Women’s Pull-On Straight Crop Pant

Something about this sky baby blue pant and button-down combo screams breezy, sun-soaked getaway. The pants are made from a linen-viscose blend (using a viscose that takes less resources to produce), and the crop and pin tucks help strike that balance between tailored and relaxed.

J.Crew Women’s Soleil Pant in Linen

This is just a perfect, classic pair of 100 percent linen drawstring pants that could honestly become a wardrobe staple outside of travel. I appreciate the bright, vacation-worthy color options, and the wide size and height ranges.

BDG Urban Outfitters Women’s Cocoon Cotton & Linen Cargo Pants

Sneakers or sandals would look great with these cool cargo pants made of 65 percent cotton and 35 percent linen. The baggy, low-rise style would be cute with a fun crop top, too, and the denim-all-day girlies can get a similar vibe with these when it’s simply too hot and muggy for jeans.

Ahead of the paris olympics, france looks to a green future.

As the Olympic Games return to the French capital, a host of eco-forward companies and projects are revolutionizing the region’s economy

He cannot promise that President Macron will make a James Bond-like entrance, landing on a floating pad on the River Seine. But Lionel Grotto, CEO of Choose Paris Region—a support agency for foreign start-ups—is confident that when the 2024 Paris Olympics gets underway in the French capital, the world’s first electric flying taxi service will make a global splash.

According to Grotto, the fleet of air taxis is the perfect symbol for France’s soaring aspirations. “Making a commitment to this new era of urban air mobility is good for the economy and the environment, but it also sends a message to overseas companies that this is a country that backs innovation,” he says. “Plus, the aircraft look pretty cool, too.”

Some 16 million people are expected to visit Paris this summer for what will be the first Olympic Games to be held there in a century. Naturally, the French are planning quite a show.

The longest-ever opening ceremony will include a four-mile parade on the Seine, while every Parisian landmark will make a glittering cameo during the tournament. The Eiffel Tower will serve as a backdrop for triathlon events. The Place de la Concorde will become a skateboard arena. The Grand Palais will stage the tae kwon do. If all this isn’t fancy enough, the equestrian events will be held at Château de Versailles.

Host countries usually view the Olympics as a way of growing visitor numbers, boosting local businesses and promoting exports. France, though, has far larger ambitions, seeing the event as a springboard to generating $16 billion in economic benefits and creating more than 250,000 jobs in the Paris region. Moreover, hosting the games is part of a bigger strategy to make France a leader in sustainable tourism and turn the City of Light into Europe’s greenest metropolis by 2030. Headline-grabbing projects designed to help combat global warming, boost biodiversity and improve air quality in Paris include the $270 million transformation of the mile-long Champs-Élysées into an “extraordinary garden” and the creation of four “urban forests” next to major landmarks such as the Hôtel de Ville and the Opéra Garnier.

But many other climate-related initiatives have been implemented with less fanfare. In an effort to reduce nonessential air travel, France banned all short-haul domestic flights between cities that are linked by a train journey of less than two and a half hours. The procedure for awarding stars to hotels now involves 27 criteria related to sustainability. And in an effort to reduce waste, single-use tableware has been banned from every fast-food restaurant.

Although the prospect of millions of extra visitors may seem at odds with this green fervor, Corinne Menegaux, director-general of Paris’ tourist and convention bureau, insists that the games—awarded by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2017—have been a catalyst for several major projects designed to help achieve a carbon-neutral future. “The summer 2024 deadline has definitely accelerated many big urban renewal programs, and it has driven innovation and investment in all sorts of areas, particularly mobility, waste management and energy consumption,” says Menegaux. “This has also laid the foundation for a more sustainable tourism industry, which can benefit the entire country for many years.” In the meantime, she says, the widespread dispersal of the Olympic events means the whole Île-de-France region—which includes the city of Paris and its surrounding areas—benefits from the tournament. Paris may be the world’s top destination—welcoming more than 40 million visitors in a typical year—but a fair number of those attending the Olympic Games (July 26 to August 11) and Paralympic Games (August 28 to September 8) will be venturing out of the gilded 8th Arrondissement for the first time. According to Menegaux, many artisanal businesses also stand to gain, thanks to the Fabriqué à Paris label, introduced in 2017 to endorse and raise the visibility of sustainably made local goods. “So far, more than 2,000 products, from food to fashion, have been awarded this label,” she says. “As well as guaranteeing high quality and authenticity for Parisians and tourists, Fabriqué à Paris promotes companies that have a positive impact on the environment and society.”

Significantly, the 128-acre Olympic Village is part of a colossal regeneration scheme in Seine-Saint-Denis, a deprived suburb five miles north of the city center. It will be linked to Paris by the $38.5 billion Grand Paris Express rail network—Europe’s largest transport infrastructure—which will eventually loop the whole city, connecting 68 new underground stations, and almost double the size of the Métro system. It is envisaged that up to 400,000 residences will proliferate around these new stations. Indeed, according to the Société du Grand Paris, the public body tasked with delivering the Grand Paris Express, once the whole network is operational it will generate an additional $110 billion in GDP and more than 115,000 jobs on top of those created by the region’s natural growth.

Paris is certainly enchanting foreign investors. A recent Choose Paris Region report reveals that 2022 was a record year, with overseas companies backing a total of 431 projects—up seven percent on 2021—and creating 30,000 jobs. Moreover, Île- de-France topped fDi Intelligence ’s 2023 rankings of Large European Regions of the Future.

Grotto notes that the majority of the new jobs are in innovative or “high-value” sectors. “We have seen that since 2017 many international businesses have used the Olympics as a spur to invest in infrastructure projects, which encompass hospitality, transport, energy, IT and data sectors,” he says. “At the same time, a lot of the foreign companies setting up start-ups in the Paris region are transitioning to emerging green technologies and recognize the big opportunities here.”

Toyota Motor Corporation, for instance, partnered with three French companies to create HysetCo, which aims to accelerate the rollout of zero-emission hydrogen mobility. HysetCo recently opened Europe’s largest hydrogen refueling station for light vehicles in Paris, where the Japanese company is already an investor in Hype, the world’s first fleet of hydrogen-powered taxis.

Yet, according to Grotto, it is American companies making the biggest inroads. “Of all the new jobs created in the Paris region in 2022, 42 percent came from U.S. firms, compared to an average of 34 percent over the last four years,” he says. “Going forward, this figure is likely to be higher.”

This is largely due to Paris’ concerted efforts to replace London as the leading finance capital of Europe, following the U.K’s vote to leave the European Union. Required to find a new European base post-Brexit for regulatory reasons, most U.S. multinationals initially decamped to Frankfurt (home of the European Central Bank), Amsterdam, Luxembourg and Dublin. However, a flurry of fiscal and market reforms has made the French capital a sexier option. Consulting firm EY says that of the 7,139 jobs the Paris region had gained by January as a direct result of Brexit, 5,507 are in financial services such as banking, insurance and assets management.

The U.S.’ largest bank, JPMorgan Chase & Co., now has 860 employees in the French capital, following the transfer of nearly 500 London jobs. Bank of America and Goldman Sachs, which both employed just 70 people in Paris before Brexit, have workforces exceeding 650 and 400, respectively.

Grotto believes the Paris region will further benefit as the finance sector continues to evolve. For instance, JPMorgan has launched a Paris-based division focused on artificial intelligence and is on a hiring spree following the announcement of its new ChatGPT-like bot, IndexGPT.

To capitalize on this surge in transatlantic businesses, Air France has embarked on a major strategic program to bolster its North American routes. The flag carrier has increased capacity, operating up to 212 weekly flights to 21 cities in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. One eye-catching new destination is Raleigh, capital of North Carolina and part of the Research Triangle, one of the U.S.’ leading high-tech R&D hubs and second only to Silicon Valley for advanced industries.

The airline has also launched its much lauded Business-class seats on its Paris to New York-JFK route. These are also available on direct flights from Paris to LAX—a timely development for the IOC bigwigs already working on the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

the urban traveller

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

the urban traveller

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

the urban traveller

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

the urban traveller

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

the urban traveller

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

the urban traveller

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

the urban traveller

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

the urban traveller

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

the urban traveller

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

the urban traveller

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

the urban traveller

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

the urban traveller

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

the urban traveller

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

the urban traveller

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

the urban traveller

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

the urban traveller

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

the urban traveller

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!

DHS Announces $1.8 Billion in Preparedness Grants

WASHINGTON— Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas today announced more than $1.8 billion in funding for eight Fiscal Year 2024 preparedness grant programs. These grant programs provide critical funding to help state, local, tribal, and territorial officials prepare for, prevent, protect against, and respond to acts of terrorism and disasters.

“As threats continue to evolve, the Department of Homeland Security is committed to providing state, local, tribal and territorial governments, as well as transportation authorities and nonprofit organizations, with vital resources to help them strengthen our nation’s security and preparedness,” said Secretary Mayorkas. “This funding is essential for frontline personnel, including emergency managers, firefighters, emergency medical services, law enforcement and other first responders. The grants will play a critical role in ensuring local communities across the country have the resources and capabilities to prevent threats to the homeland.”

After extensive consultation with grantees leading up to this announcement, DHS is focused on the need to invest in high priority areas, build capacity in other communities, and give jurisdictions the flexibility to make prioritization decisions based on their own assessment of their needs. For Fiscal Year (FY) 2024, Congress cut each of the preparedness grants by 10%, which resulted in commensurate cuts to each jurisdiction.

The law requires that at least 25% of the combined funds for the State Homeland Security Program (SHSP) and the Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) be dedicated to Law Enforcement Terrorism Prevention Activities (LETPA). This year, we are maintaining the LETPA minimum requirement of 35%. The Department’s law enforcement subject matter experts engaged with FEMA experts to review and clarify policy and program decisions to ensure that law enforcement and terrorism-focused grant funds are appropriately used for terrorism prevention activities, thereby strengthening our national preparedness posture.

This year, we will provide $274.5 Million in Nonprofit Security Grant Program funds to houses of worship, schools, and other nonprofits to support target hardening and other physical security enhancements for nonprofit organizations that are at high risk of a terrorist attack. The program will continue to help integrate nonprofit preparedness activities with broader state and local preparedness efforts. It will also promote collaboration in emergency preparedness activities among public and private community representatives, as well as state and local government agencies.

The FY 2024 grant guidance will continue to focus on the nation’s highest risk areas, including urban areas that face the most significant threats. The Urban Area Security Initiative enhances regional preparedness by helping build and sustain capabilities responsive to the evolving threat environment. This year, the Urban Area Security Initiative will fund 41 high-threat, high-density urban areas, including an urban area that has not previously received funding.

DHS continues to emphasize six national priority areas in the FY 2024 grant cycle: cybersecurity; soft targets and crowded places; intelligence and information sharing; domestic violent extremism; community preparedness and resilience; and election security. Grant recipients under the State Homeland Security Program and Urban Area Security Initiative will be required to dedicate a minimum of 30% of their awards across these six priority areas. Of the 30%, there is a 3% minimum spend on election security, with flexibility on how to spend the remaining 27% across the six priority areas.

As with previous years, new capabilities that are built using homeland security grant funding must be deployable if needed to support regional and national efforts. All capabilities being built or sustained must have a clear linkage to the core capabilities articulated in the National Preparedness Goal .

FY 2024 Preparedness Grant Summary

Preparedness grant program allocations for fiscal year 2024, the following grants are non-competitive and awarded to recipients based on several factors: .

Homeland Security Grant Program (HSGP): State Homeland Security Program —provides $373.5 million to support the implementation of risk-driven, capabilities-based state homeland security strategies to address capability targets. Awards are based on statutory minimums and relative risk as determined by DHS/FEMA’s risk methodology.

HSGP: Urban Area Security Initiative —provides $553.5 million to enhance regional preparedness and capabilities in 41 high-threat, high-density areas. Awards are based on relative risk as determined by DHS/FEMA’s risk methodology.

For both the state homeland and urban area grants, 30% of the awards must address the six priority areas of cybersecurity; soft target and crowded places; information and intelligence sharing; domestic violent extremism; community preparedness and resilience; and election security. Additionally, 35% of these grants must be dedicated to law enforcement terrorism prevention activities, and 80% of these grants must be obligated from the state to local or tribal governments within 45 calendar days of receipt.

Intercity Passenger Rail —provides $9 million to Amtrak to protect critical surface transportation infrastructure and the traveling public from acts of terrorism and increase the resilience of the Amtrak rail system. Award made per congressional direction.

Emergency Management Performance Grant (EMPG) Program –provides $319.55 million to assist state, local, tribal and territorial emergency management agencies in obtaining the resources required to support the National Preparedness Goal’s associated mission areas and core capabilities to build a culture of preparedness. Awards are based on statutory minimums and population.

The following grants are competitive, and exact awards will be announced later this year:

HSGP: Operation Stonegarden —provides $81 million to enhance cooperation and coordination among state, local, tribal, territorial, and federal law enforcement agencies to jointly enhance security along the United States land and water borders.

Tribal Homeland Security Grant Program —provides $13.5 million to eligible tribal nations to implement preparedness initiatives to help strengthen the nation against risk associated with potential terrorist attacks and other hazards.

Nonprofit Security Grant Program —provides $274.5 million to support target hardening and other physical security enhancements for nonprofit organizations that are at high risk of a terrorist attack. This year, $137.25 million is provided to nonprofits in UASI-designated urban areas, and $137.25 million is provided to nonprofits outside of UASI-designated urban areas located in any state or territory.

Port Security Grant Program —provides $90 million to help protect critical port infrastructure from terrorism, enhance maritime domain awareness, improve port-wide maritime security risk management, and maintain or re-establish maritime security mitigation protocols that support port recovery and resiliency capabilities.

Transit Security Grant Program —provides $83.7 million to owners and operators of public transit systems to protect critical surface transportation and the traveling public from acts of terrorism and to increase the resilience of transit infrastructure.

Intercity Bus Security Grant Program —provides $1.8 million to owners and operators of intercity bus systems to protect surface transportation infrastructure and the traveling public from acts of terrorism and to increase the resilience of transit infrastructure.

Before determining modifications and final allocations to the grant programs, DHS coordinated extensive engagements with local and state partners, and worked with a wide range of stakeholders.

All preparedness funding notices can be found at www.grants.gov . Final submissions must be made through the FEMA Grants Outcomes (FEMA GO) system .

Further information on DHS’s preparedness grant programs is available on DHS.gov  and FEMA.gov .

This house is well-stocked: the kitchen provides all the tools needed to throw together dreamy dinners on the deck, and paddleboards allow for exploration in your own aquatic backyard. Just be sure to pick up groceries, as the location isn’t proximal to restaurants. The rental is a doable drive to Volcano National Park and the island’s famous black- and green-sand beaches, though. Amagansett may be the chiller chunk of the Hamptons, but the Jersey Shore takes the cake for the most fun swath of beach towns in the tri-state area. This cottage sits a couple blocks away from the boardwalk, waterpark, and beach, and is near a state park, too. With Netflix, soft and sumptuous furniture and pillows in every room, and a walk-in shower, this is the kind of place where you really kick back after clocking so many hours baking in the sun, it would make your dermatologist gasp.

Featured on HGTV, this Hilton Head villa sure is good looking. Bundeena, Australia

Bed & bath:  3 bedrooms, 2 baths Top amenities:  Private beach, historic property, lush gardens

“In September, I took a solo trip to recharge at this enchanting sandstone cottage on the outskirts of Sydney ,” Australian travel writer and editor Rachel Lees told Traveler . Bordered by the Royal National Park , the village of Bundeena showcases a different side of the city she calls home—one with quiet beaches and nature walks dotted with Indigenous rock carvings. Built by early settlers in the mid-1800s, the three-bedroom Airbnb has been carefully restored and styled with antiques and handmade linens. “The scent of dried eucalyptus leaves suffused every room,” says Lees, who awoke each day to native birdsong and sunshine streaming through the curtains. The historic house, which is nestled amid manicured gardens that blend into the surrounding bushland, has a firepit and a wooden table on a cliff overlooking the bay. While it was “the ultimate refuge for a career-mom in need of a break,” Lees says she is already plotting her return with family and friends, “so we can enjoy those outdoor entertaining areas together.”

Federal agencies, communities to map heat inequities in 14 U.S. cities

This summer NOAA, in partnership with the U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Housing and Urban Development (HUD), as well as community scientists, will map the hottest neighborhoods in 14 U.S. communities and four international cities. Identifying these areas, called urban heat islands , helps communities take action to reduce the health impacts of extreme heat and provides cooling relief for those living in the hottest areas.

“HUD is pleased to join our federal partners in support of this campaign to map communities throughout the country most impacted by extreme heat,” said HUD Acting Secretary Adrianne Todman. “This mapping campaign is an important step to understand how extreme heat affects the health, safety and quality of life of our communities. At HUD, this information is critical as we develop programs to support our core mission of creating strong, sustainable, inclusive communities.”

“From manufacturing to clean energy initiatives, President Biden’s Investing in America agenda is about transforming our country for the better,” said U.S. Deputy Secretary of Commerce Don Graves. “As climate change accelerates, so does our need to understand where and who is most impacted. By working together with our partners in government, science and academia, this new initiative will help us paint a clearer picture of what cities across the globe are at the greatest risk — and how our resources to mitigate that risk can be most efficiently and effectively mustered.”

“As extreme heat affects people’s health more and more across the United States and around the world, programs like NOAA’s Urban Heat Island mapping campaign provide essential information to guide relief and risk mitigation efforts, and to make sure resources get to the neighborhoods at greatest risk,” noted HHS Assistant Secretary for Health ADM Rachel Levine, who oversees the HHS Office of Climate Change and Health Equity partnering on this project.

Now in its eighth year, the NOAA Urban Heat Island mapping campaign addresses extreme heat , the number one weather-related cause of death in the U.S. for the last three decades. Summer 2023 was Earth’s hottest on record, and communities across the globe felt this heat, impacting health, infrastructure, agriculture and more.

Urban heat islands, areas with few trees and more pavement that absorbs heat, can be up to 20 degrees Fahrenheit hotter than nearby neighborhoods. To map these areas and collect the data necessary to protect disproportionately affected communities, the NOAA Climate Program Office (CPO) , the interagency National Integrated Heat Health Information System (NIHHIS) , HHS, HUD and CAPA Strategies, LLC offsite link will work with each of the participating communities.

"It's exciting to see how communities have used their urban heat maps to strategize placement of trees and shade structures, determine areas in need of more outreach and inform overall city resilience plans," said NOAA Administrator Richard Spinrad, Ph.D. "This year, partnering with HUD and HHS will allow the program to expand and provide even more resources to communities."

Map showing NOAA, federal and local partners will work with community scientists to map urban heat islands in 14 U.S. communities this summer and in four international cities. Since 2017, NOAA and its science partner, CAPA Strategies, have worked with more than 70 communities to create heat island maps that can be used to inform cooling strategies.

Communities chosen for the 2024 program are: Bloomington, Indiana; Calexico, California; Charlotte, North Carolina; Flint, Michigan; Fort Wayne, Indiana; Grand Junction, Colorado; Hennepin and Ramsey Counties, Minnesota; Laredo, Texas; Pierce County, Washington; Reno and Sparks, Nevada; Santa Fe, New Mexico; and Unincorporated Norcross, Georgia. The international campaigns will take place in Mexicali, Mexico; Dhaka, Bangladesh; Nairobi, Kenya; and Salvador, Brazil. International campaigns were previously completed in Freetown, Sierra Leone, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Santiago, Chile.

Local campaigns in the U.S. and abroad do not receive direct funding from NOAA. Instead, over the past seven years, NOAA has funded CAPA Strategies, a U.S. company, to provide science support, including sensors, planning assistance and map creation based on data collected by community volunteers. CAPA Strategies has supported more than 70 community-led urban heat island mapping campaigns in the U.S. and international communities by recruiting volunteers to conduct heat data. Communities also bring their own financial and in-kind support from partners that include nonprofit organizations, city government agencies, schools, science museums and international foundations.

While the emphasis of the program is on urban heat island mapping in U.S. cities, a smaller number of international campaigns benefit U.S. communities because they broaden the scope of lessons that can be learned from how other countries tackle extreme heat. They also enable the U.S. to share best practices more broadly.

Using heat sensors mounted on their own cars, volunteer community scientists, led by a team of local partners in each city, traverse their neighborhoods in the morning, afternoon and evening on one of the hottest days of the year. The sensors record temperature, humidity, time and the volunteers’ location every second. CAPA's end-to-end program, including sensor technology, community engagement, analysis and modeling allows communities to develop hyper-local descriptions of where the hottest parts of their community are and strategize mitigation options specific to each region of the country.

The cities and counties selected this year have a range of experiences with extreme heat, but each is looking for equitable ways to implement cooling solutions in their communities. For example, Pierce County, Washington, was one of the many counties in the Pacific Northwest that faced an unprecedented heat wave in June 2021. Hundreds of lives were lost in the region, including 159 deaths in Washington offsite link and 29 deaths in Pierce County . Throughout the state, high temperatures buckled roadways, melted train power lines and damaged other infrastructure, while also scorching forests that were not adapted to the extreme conditions.

During the 2023 urban heat island campaigns, 942 community scientists took more than one million measurements in 19 U.S. communities. The data and maps from the campaigns are open access and available on HEAT.gov .

Previous and current communities participating in the UHI campaigns are part of a community of practice where they are able to share best practices and network with other cities addressing extreme heat. Many of the communities have implemented cooling solutions based on the heat maps, including securing federal funding for tree planting initiatives, establishing cooling centers, developing heat action plans, educating the public on heat and more.

NOAA’s heat island mapping program is part of the Biden Administration’s Justice40 initiative , a whole-of-government effort to ensure that federal agencies work with states and local communities to make good on President Biden’s promise to deliver 40% of benefits from federal investment in climate and clean energy to disadvantaged communities. When evaluating applications for the 2024 heat island mapping campaigns, the NIHHIS team gave significant weight to applications emphasizing their commitment to addressing environmental justice.

To keep up with the summer 2024 campaigns, subscribe to the Heat Beat Newsletter offsite link , check out the NIHHIS website and follow #UrbanHeatMaps2024 on social media.

Climate, weather, and water affect all life on our ocean planet.  NOAA’s mission  is to understand and predict our changing environment, from the deep sea to outer space, and to manage and conserve America’s coastal and marine resources.
