Flashback: Tim McGraw, Faith Hill Ignite CMA Stage With First Duet

By Stephen L. Betts

Stephen L. Betts

It was 48 years ago today (May 1st) that Tim McGraw was born in Delhi, Louisiana. While his father, baseball All-Star Tug McGraw, traveled the country as a relief pitcher for the New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies, McGraw spent his childhood in the small Louisiana farm town of Start, where he was raised by his mother, Betty, and stepfather, Horace Smith.

Meanwhile, Faith Hill — McGraw’s future wife and fellow country superstar — was raised 110 miles away, in the similarly-named town of Star, Mississippi. The two chart-toppers hit the road together in 1996 for the aptly titled Spontaneous Combustion Tour, with sparks immediately flying. Hill called off her engagement to her former producer, and she and Tim were married on October 6th of that year.

As the first single from his 1997 LP, Everywhere, McGraw released the sweeping and romantic duet with his now-wife, “It’s Your Love.” The song’s impact on both singers’ careers was immediate. “It’s Your Love” took a mere five weeks to reach Number One on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. The tune was a Top Ten pop single, too, becoming the first major crossover hit for McGraw and paving the way for Hill’s international smash, “This Kiss,” one year later.

More than its chart success, “It’s Your Love” was a multiple award winner, taking home four ACM awards for Single, Song, Video and Vocal Event of the Year. The latter award was duplicated later in the year as both McGraw and Hill’s first-ever victories at the CMA ceremony in 1998, where the pair performed the song live. “It’s Your Love” was also the Number One country song of 1997, a distinction McGraw would revisit the following year with “Just to See You Smile.”

In addition to this duet, McGraw and Hill — who’ve since become one of country music’s most awarded power couples, joining the ranks of Johnny and June (and, more recently, Miranda and Blake) — have had hits with “Just to Hear You Say That You Love Me,” “Let’s Make Love” and “Meanwhile, Back at Mama’s,” among others. But Mrs. McGraw has shared her hubby with other artists as well, including Jo Dee Messina, Nelly, Def Leppard and Kenny Chesney.

The ultimate tribute to Tim McGraw came, arguably, from young fan Taylor Swift, who named a song from her 2006 debut album after him.

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill's Relationship Timeline

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill wed in 1996 and share three daughters

Contributor, PEOPLE

Country music superstars Tim McGraw and Faith Hill have music to thank for their decades-long love story.

The "Don't Take the Girl" singer and Hill met for the first time in 1994 at a gig in Nashville. At the time, they were both seeing other people but as fate would have it, McGraw and Hill's paths crossed again two years later and the rest is history.

Hill served as McGraw's opening act on his 1996 Spontaneous Combustion tour and the pair wed later that year. The country artists now share three daughters.

Here's a look at Tim McGraw and Faith Hill's relationship, from their first meeting to starting a family.

1994: Tim McGraw and Faith Hill meet for the first time

McGraw and Hill first crossed paths in Nashville at a Country Radio Seminar showcase for new talent. At the time, the "Highway Don't Care" crooner was in a relationship with Kristine Donahue, and Hill was engaged to Scott Hendricks.

1996: Tim McGraw and Faith Hill go on tour together

The couple really connected during McGraw's Spontaneous Combustion tour in 1996.

"We were young and silly and goo-goo-eyed in love," McGraw later told PEOPLE of their initial spark. The pair started dating after they each ended their relationships with their respective partners.

Hill later defended how she and McGraw got their start , telling PEOPLE, "If someone is going to judge my character because I was engaged to somebody and then I left him for somebody else — 'Oh, OK, now she's a slut and a bad person' — I can't control that. But I wasn't about to let Tim slip through my hands."

June 26, 1996: Tim McGraw proposes to Faith Hill on stage

The musician popped the question while on tour. He shared the romantic details of the proposal years later in an October 2015 video.

"We were in the dressing room, here, June 26, 1996, and it was raining and stuff and we'd been on tour for a while together, and I joked around with her about getting married. And so I looked at her, grabbed her by the hands, and dropped forward [on my knees] onstage," he recalled. "She said, 'We're at a country music festival in a trailer house, and you're asking me to marry you?' And I said, 'Yeah.' Speaking with Esquire about his decision to get sober in 2008, McGraw revealed that he was "getting out of [bed] and going to the liquor cabinet and taking a big shot at 8:00 in the morning and thinking, 'I have to wake the kids up.' "

He called that his last straw, saying that he immediately went to Hill and told her what was happening.

"I went straight to my wife and said, 'This is where I'm at.' I was scared," he remembered. "She just grabbed me and hugged me and changed my life."

He credited her with helping him stay strong and sober.

"My wife always says, 'You're not scared of anything.' I say, 'Ehhh, one thing. I'm looking at it right now,' " he said. "I didn't know love could feel so good. Was it an emotion? Was it a lifestyle? Was it an imaginary thing? But love is all of those things."

McGraw went on, "Love is being angry. Love is not talking for a day. Love is getting in each other's face. Love is accepting that I'm wrong. Love is a 360-degree thing. It's not linear. They always say you're not supposed to fight in front of your kids. Everybody fights in front of their kids. That's part of the deal."

October 6, 2021: Tim McGraw and Faith Hill celebrate 25 years of marriage

In honor of 25 years of marriage to Hill, McGraw reflected on his proposal and the wedding that followed. He called it "the best day of my life." He also shared some new details, that fans may not have known before.

"25 years later and it's still the best day of my life. Thanks for going on this journey with me. Love you Faith ❤️," he wrote, adding that it took him a "few times" to convince her to accept his proposal.

McGraw continued, "We had dated for a while. I actually asked her to marry me quite a few times and she kept saying no. She said, 'I'm not going to get involved with another country singer, it's just not going to work out.' "

He said he finally decided to get down on a knee during a country music festival, hopeful that Hill would accept.

"They had these trailer houses set up. I'm getting ready to go onstage, and I had this sort of case that had this big mirror in it. She's standing there, and we're talking, and I said, 'Look, let's get married," he remembered. "And she says, 'You're asking me to marry you at a country music festival in a trailer house?' And I said, 'Well, it's pretty apropos if you think about it.' She goes, 'Are you serious?' And I said, 'Well, yeah, I'm serious.' "

He returned to the dressing room to find a message on the mirror from his future wife accepting his proposal.

"And we still have that mirror. And it was the best day of my life, that's for sure," McGraw said.

November 2021: Tim McGraw and Faith Hill make their silver screen debut

While both McGraw and Hill had appeared on-screen before, they next acted alongside each other, until 2021. The couple appeared in 1883 , a prequel to Yellowstone that tells the origin story of the Dutton family. McGraw and Hill play James and Margaret Dutton.

"To see my beautiful wife on horseback, firing guns, and having dirt all over her face, I just sit in awe. She's a strong woman, anyway," McGraw told Entertainment Weekly . "[Creator] Taylor [Sheridan] said early on to me, 'Man, you'll just get on that horse. You're not scared of anything.' I said, 'I'm scared of one thing. She's right over there.' "

December 10, 2021: Tim McGraw and Faith Hill talk about becoming empty nesters

Things changed in a big way for McGraw and Hill after their youngest daughter, Audrey, graduated in 2020. The pair were officially empty nesters and they opened up about the transition to PEOPLE in December 2021.

"You're used to getting up in the morning, taking kids to school, going to softball practices and basketball practices and cheerleader practices and all of a sudden all that's gone when your last one leaves," he told PEOPLE.

He noted that since their daughters left home, their house in Nashville has quieted down significantly. He looked back fondly on their lives together as a family of five.

"I miss the afternoons because Faith would always make sure something was cooking when they would come home from school," he said. "I miss them coming in and smelling what mom's cooking and being excited about having dinner. I miss the energy around. There were times when we had about 15 teenage girls in our house talking about boys and life and everything going on. We're still a really close family; we talk all the time. But it's difficult when your kids leave. All of a sudden they don't need you as much anymore. And I think it's probably more difficult for Mom."

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill's Relationship Timeline

"The Rest of Our Life," indeed.

It's safe to say that Tim McGraw and Faith Hill are always giving us major #marriagegoals . Just take a look at the lyrics to their 2017 hit, "The Rest of Our Life":

"Sitting with you in a dark room, warmed by a fireplace. You know there's just something about you. You brighten my day. I got something to run past you, I just hope I say it right. So I take your hand and ask you, Have you made plans for the rest of your life?"

So naturally, it's time to go down memory lane of country music's favorite married couple and their sweet October 6, 1996 wedding.

The Proposal

The couple fell for each other on tour in early 1996, and by October they were married. On their 19th wedding anniversary, McGraw told his audience in Colorado the adorable story of how he got Hill to marry him. "We were in the dressing room, here, June 26, 1996, and it was raining and stuff and we'd been on tour for a while together, and I joked around with her about getting married. And so I said... I looked at her, grabbed her by the hand, and dropped forward [on my knees] onstage. She had already done her show. And I said, 'I'm really serious. I want you to marry me.'" The songstress laughed in response. "She said, 'We're at a country music festival in a trailer house, and you're asking me to marry you? And I said, 'Yeah.' So I went onstage."

During his performance, McGraw's future wife gave him an answer to his question. "I had in my dressing room... this foldout case that had a mirror in it that was my dressing armoire," McGraw said. "I still have it to this day. When I came back offstage, [I saw] a Sharpie with lipstick kisses all over it, saying, 'Yes! I'm gonna be your wife.' It had, 'I love you' with big lipstick kisses. And this is the place right here."

The Wedding

Hill and McGraw might have been one of the first celebrity couples to pull off a surprise wedding . The duo invited friends for what guests thought would be a softball game and concert in the groom's hometown of Rayville, Louisiana, and surprised everyone as they stood under an oak tree with a minister, ready to say "I do."

Wearing a simple slinky white wedding dress , the bride—who was three months pregnant at the time—went barefoot and sported some seriously '90s gloves and a simple string of pearls. The groom wore jeans topped with a black coat.

We'll continue to awww at Hill and McGraw's sweet relationship, not to mention their adorable Instagram moments. From stage reunions to family vacations, these two sure know how to make marriage look easy. There's certainly no shortage of swoon-worthy moments.

Here's to 24 more years for these two!

Tim McGraw + Faith Hill: A Timeline of their Decades-Spanning Love Story

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill remain madly in love after 27 years of marriage.

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill are one of the most iconic couples in country music as well as Hollywood. The country superstars fell in love quickly while on tour and went on to form a bond that has captivated audiences and drawn fans into their shared lives as they raised three daughters and furthered each other's careers. Over the years, they have collaborated musically, starred onscreen together in Yellowstone prequel series 1883 , and passed on their knack for singing to not one, but all three of their children.

Hill and McGraw's inspiring love story has been easy for fans to root for over the years, especially in the early years when they first got together. But fans might be surprised to know that Tim McGraw wasn't Hill's first love once she arrived in Nashville. In fact, he wasn't even her first husband.

When Hill first moved to Nashville, she fell in love with music executive Daniel Hill. The pair met when Faith was just 19 years old. The couple married and stayed together for five years, but after Faith met her birth mother and started thinking critically about her life, she realized she needed to move on. Though she kept her new last name, Hill, she pushed forward into her unknown future in the music business, leaving behind the comfort of the domestic life she had settled into.

Life Leading Up to Love

A year later, Hill released her first album as a country singer,  Take Me As I Am , and started her reign as a chart-topper with "Wild One." Upon her second album's release, she joined the  Spontaneous Combustion Tour in 1996, opening for none other than McGraw.

Like Hill, McGraw questioned his identity at a young age after finding out that his dad wasn't his biological father. Though his biological father's fame ( Frank Edwin "Tug" McGraw Jr. was a major league baseball player) gave him a slight edge when getting his first single released, the Louisiana native's star rose by his own volition with the release of Not A Moment Too Soon , which reached Top Country Album status in 1994.

At the start of the  Spontaneous Combustion Tour , Hill was engaged to record producer Scott Hendricks, and some sources say that McGraw was planning to marry his long-term girlfriend. But the bond between the two musicians was so strong it led them both to reevaluate their current status and come to the conclusion that they couldn't live without one another.

"We were playing at a country music festival, and we had a trailer that was our dressing room," McGraw told  The Boot . "I had a big mirror that was in there, and right before I went onstage, I wrote 'Will you be my wife?'... I mean, 'Will you marry me?' and I went onstage, and when I came offstage, she had written, 'I am going to be your wife, yes.' And so, we still have that mirror."

The pair wed on Oct.6, 1996, in Louisiana at McGraw's aunt Barbara's house. They started a family with the birth of their first daughter, Gracie, in 1997. They welcomed Maggie Elizabeth, their second daughter, in 1998. Their third was soon on her way in 2001, but due to medical complications, Audrey Caroline was born early via C-section, weighing only 3 pounds and 11 ounces. Her birth was a trying time for the country duo, who had to pull together even closer to endure the difficult hand they were dealt until Audrey grew healthier.

McGraw and Hill cite keeping family first as a means to maintain their healthy relationship and mutual respect for one another. "I think Tim and Faith came to the party as equals," Nashville star Gary Morris told Good Housekeeping . "It's apparent to me that they love each other more than they love their work."

During a 2023 interview with Apple Music 1's Zane Lowe, McGraw opened up about his family, covering everything from coping with all three of his daughters moving away from home to Hill's role in saving his now 30-year mainstream country run— if not his life— as he battled personal demons.

"I guarantee you, had I not gotten married to Faith at 29 years old A, I probably would've ran my career into the ground, and B, I would've died already with my career into the ground, one or the other, and it wouldn't have ever been where it's at now," McGraw said.

McGraw conquered alcoholism and has been sober since 2008.

"Well, I don't know if the maturity's occurred yet, but she put up with it for a while because I was pretty sneaky about it for a while," he explained. "But it was just overdoing stuff, and then I think when the kids got old enough that they could notice things is when she finally said, 'You've got to figure this out.'"

Making Music and Touring Together

Faith Hill & Tim McGraw

The pair released several duets in the '90s: "It's Your Love," "Just to Hear You Say That You Love Me" and "Let's Make Love," which even earned them a Grammy. In 2000, the unstoppable duo hit the road together again on the  Soul2Soul Tour . The vast majority of the 65-date tour sold out, and each artist performed their own full sets focusing on their latest albums, which were McGraw's A Place In The Sun  and Hill's  Breathe .

Reprising the success of their first duet tour, they led another  Soul2Soul Tour in 2007. For a while, the couple focused on their own music. But in 2017, McGraw and Hill came out with a duet album, The Rest of Our Life , as their first release with Sony Music Entertainment.

To coincide with their first-ever album together, they took to the road again with a third incarnation of the  Soul2Soul World Tour . This time, the pair traveled the world with over 100 dates.

On a creative level, McGraw lauds Hill for always providing unfiltered advice about his music, including new album Standing Room Only .

"I'm always playing her the songs that I want to record and playing the mixes as I'll go along, and there's times we don't agree," he shared. "There's times where she goes, 'I don't like the way that sounds.' 'Well, I do, and that's way it's going to stay.' And the same thing when she's making a record. It's like, 'I think this should be your single.' She goes, 'No, I don't like that song. This is going to be the single.' I go, 'All right.' She's right about her stuff and I'm usually right about my stuff, but most of the time we agree."

On Oct. 6, 2023, the couple celebrated its 27th wedding anniversary. As he's wont to do, McGraw commemorated the occasion with a social media post . This time, he shared the first photo the couple ever took together.

"This is the very first picture ever taken of us, the very first time we ever met back in spring of 1994," McGraw wrote in the caption. "This was backstage of the 'New Faces' show at the Country Radio Seminar... I fell for you in an instant!

"Today is our 27th wedding anniversary and I fall for you every day, every time you walk into the room, every time I see you in our 3 beautiful daughters' smiles," he continued. "I just keep falling and always will. Happy anniversary my love!"

Years later, their bond remains strong. In 2017, McGraw told the Today Show , "In the car, I drive. In the relationship, she drives. We make decisions about things in different ways, but we always talk about it before we do it."

"And so I looked at her, grabbed her by the hands, and dropped forward [on my knees] onstage. She said, 'We're at a country music festival in a trailer house, and you're asking me to marry you?' Off the heels of their 25th wedding anniversary, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill had another thrilling project in the works. Tim reflected on the exciting experience with Entertainment Weekly , saying, "To see my beautiful wife on horseback, firing guns, and having dirt all over her face, I just sit in awe. She's a strong woman…[creator] Taylor [Sheridan] said early on to me, 'Man, you'll just get on that horse. You're not scared of anything.' I said, 'I'm scared of one thing. She's right over there.'"

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill pulled off the *ultimate* surprise wedding in 1996—by disguising it as a sporting event! The fiancés invited a select group of loved ones to Tim's aunt's house in Louisiana for a charity softball match.
