RIDGEBACK TECHNOLOGY

What is it?

Ridgeback is a power producer. TE engineers created a titanium spine running from the center of the face through the crown and wrapping around the head to connect with the titanium sole plate.

What does it do?

This titanium spine within the carbon crown acts as a brace to produce more power on center hits.  Bracing the center of the face also allows design of greater face flex in the heel and toe areas meaning off-center hits achieve greater power.

Ridgeback also creates superior feel at impact.  The extra rigidity created by the brace through the crown produces a much stronger feel at impact when compared to a full carbon crown and results in a crisper and brighter feel at impact.

DUAL CARBON WINGS

What are they?

TE engineers replaced titanium from the crown and sole by creating wrap-around Carbon Wings.

What do they do?

The use of Dual Carbon wings saves considerable weight.

This weight savings is then moved to the ideal location to help with creating optimal CG location.  The C721 driver has a low-rearward CG position that produces an extremely high M.O.I. to increase stability at impact.

The C721 Driver employs 19% more Carbon Fiber than any previous Exotics driver and the CG was lowered by 13% to improve launch characteristics.

DIAMOND FACE 2.0

Diamond Face 2.0 is made up of diamond shapes of variable face thickness behind the face. There are 43 total diamond shapes featured on Diamond Face 2.0, comprising seven different thicknesses in an interweaving pattern. This compares to the three different thicknesses used on the initial Diamond Face design. Face thickness of Diamond Face 2.0 at the extreme perimeters of the face is also reduced by 20%.

The mini trampolines that make-up Diamond Face 2.0  create faster ball speeds and an expanded sweet spot.

The increase in Diamond Face 2.0 coverage to the extreme heel and toe and of the driver dramatically increases ball speed and forgiveness on off-center hits.

ADJUSTABLE REAR BACKWEIGHT

A 10-gram adjustable back weight is located at the extreme rear of the clubhead.

The position of the backweight helps deliver an optimally located CG, maximizing M.O.I. and aiding extreme stability and resistance to twisting at impact.

Installation of different weights also allows dialing in of required swingweight at custom driver lengths.

Additional weights available in 5 grams, 15 grams and 18 grams.

SOUND DIFFUSION PANELS

Sound Diffusion Panels are strategically-placed panels located inside the club.

These Panels vastly improve the acoustic properties of the driver by directing and diffusing sound waves within the club head on impact.  This enhances the richness of the sound produced.

Working in concert with the Sound Diffusion Panels, inherent design aspects of Ridgeback and the wrap around Carbon Wings all work together to orchestrate the 721 driver’s industry-leading sound and feel.

ADJUSTABLE HOSEL

The adjustable hosel allows golfers to adjust the loft +/- 2 degrees and lie angle through a range of 3 degrees.

With three lofts being offered (9.5°, 10.5°, and 12°) the 721 delivers a loft range of 7.5° to 14°, while various alternate settings afford lie angles from 59 degrees to 62 degrees.

The shaft make-up in the 721 Series is unique to the industry. We tested an extensive range of market-leading shafts with our Tour Edge Development robot to find the the best-performing custom shafts for every swing speed.

TOUR EDGE DRIVER REVIEWS

Tour edge hot launch c522.

We tested: 9.5°, 10.5°, 12°

Our take: The no-frills design of the Hot Launch C522 is a welcoming one. It’s almost as though this driver becomes easier to trust, since there’s no fiddling with adjustable weight or adjustable hosels here. You simply grab hold and swing away, and in our experience, the results live up to the hype. This driver produced bombs that flew high and straight with moderate spin, with a dose of added shotmaking capabilities.

The details: The springy Diamond Face 2.0 cupface design improves ballspeed and a deep rear sole weight boosts MOI for added stability, especially on off-center strikes. Additionally, the A.R.C. Acoustic Engineering helps deliver a solid feel and sound.

Tour Edge Hot Launch E522

We tested: 10.5°, 12°, HL

Our take: We’re refreshed to see a driver that bills itself as being the “easiest driver you will ever hit.” And in our trials, we agree, the E522 makes it a cinch to get the ball airborne and comes with built-in slice control to help keep the banana balls at bay. Like the C522, its no-frills design makes it easier to focus on hitting good shots without worrying about whether your clubhead is calibrated in a way that best fits you.

The details: The Houdini Sole features an area towards the rear section that has added mass to push the CG deeper and lower in the clubhead for a higher launch and added stability on off-center strikes. It also comes with a flexy Diamond Face 2.0 clubface and, most notably, an offset hosel design and internal heel weighting to fight slices and hit more fairways. Comes with a shorter-than-average shaft as well for added control and consistency off the tee.

Tour Edge Exotics C722

We tested: 9.5°, 10.5°

Our take: The slightly smaller (445cc) look and feel of the C722 exudes what it means to be a driver made for better players. It’s both forgiving and playable, making it ideal for players who want added distance without sacrificing shotmaking control. The adjustability is great too, meaning you can fine-tune your settings and either set it and forget it or make minor tweaks to ballflight based on when and where you play. Either way, we suspect another big win for Tour Edge with this one. It’s also one of the best sounding drivers we tried this year.

The details: The Ridgeback and Carbon Wrap tech combine to add power behind the golf ball and helps move weight closer to the clubface for greater flex in the heel and toe areas resulting in more forgiveness across more of the clubface. A Front/Back weighting system allows for adjustments in MOI and CG for either added forgiveness or greater shotmaking maneuverability. Sound Diffusion Ribbing makes of an incredible sound at impact and, finally, the Diamond Face VFT (variable face thickness) tech makes the entire clubface hotter for more distance on center and off-center strikes.

Tour Edge Exotics E722

Our take: Some players want a driver they can rely on to hit more fairways—and in doing so, fly as far as possible. The E722 is hellbent on providing maximum forgiveness and distance thanks to a variety of technologies that combine to a 5500 g/cm2 MOI rating, which in layman’s terms is as high as weve seen. This means minimal twisting on off-center hits and straighter, longer tee shots.

Tour Edge Exotics E722 driver

The details: Comes with Ridgeback and Diamond Face VFT Technology for added power, better feel and greater forgiveness across more points on the clubface. Also comes with a 30-gram weight placed at the trailing sole edge of the clubhead, pushing the CG extremely low and very deep in the clubhead for more stability and a tighter shot dispersion. The Carbon Wrap tech on the crown further reduced unwanted weight to optimize the CG location and produce greater power. Lastly, an internal sound diffusion ribbing in multiple locations helps create a super-satisfying sound at impact.

Tour Edge Exotics Pro 721

Our take: The “Pro” in Pro 721 ought to be taken seriously as this driver is designed for better players who want low-spin performance off the tee, but don’t want to give up on custom tuning capabilities. Our testers said it “checks all the boxes for better players who want shotmaking maneuverability” and it “looks and feels like a better player’s driver should look and feel.”

Tour Edge Exotics Pro 721 driver

The details: There are two interchangeable weights located on the heel and toe region of the sole for flight tuning, a Ridgeback crown design with Carbon Wings in the heel and toe areas for a lower/forward CG for lower spin and more strength and, lastly, Tour Edge’s Diamond Face VFT tech and an adjustable hosel allow for even more ballflight/loft configurations.

Why We Like It

The larger footprint of the two models exudes off-center-hit forgiveness, which is enhanced by a 20-gram sliding weight in the rear perimeter. That positioning pushes the center of gravity deeper for off-center-hit stability, the highest in company history. Still, letting that rear weight slide to draw or fade positions can soften those kinds of mis-hits by as much as 10 yards, per the company. The face-thickness pattern, which features rows of interwoven diamond shapes, gets thinner on the E723 for extra forgiveness where the target player often makes contact.

Performance

Look / sound / feel, hot list players feedback.

Ratings are based on players’ assessments in three key performance areas.

Ball Flight

Playability.

Has an incredibly large sweet spot. No matter where I make contact on the face, I get a consistent medium-flighted draw. Supreme reliability.

A pretty club with a subtle two-tone head and a nice alignment aid. Easy to hit a high cut that doesn't slide too much with minimal spin. Jumps off the face and gets good distance.

I get a higher than normal ball flight and more carry. The T-square crown design helps me square the face at address.

Max-out Your Speed and Carry Distance with The Driver

Whether you want more distance or a consistent shot shape, you need one skill above all others: the ability to make flush contact with the ball. It’s the No. 1 fundamental in golf, and without it, this game can be an eternal mystery. Here, Sean Hogan, one of Golf Digest’s Best Teachers in Florida, helps you improve your impact with the driver.

Tour Edge Hot Launch E523 Driver

Description.

Custom is no longer available for this product

The Extreme Game Improvement Hot Launch E523 Driver is designed to be the easiest driver to hit in the market for slower to medium swing speeds.

Every aspect of the E523 is focused on improving launch and accuracy.

The 460cc Titanium driver is incredibly stable at impact thanks to its extreme Moment of Inertia (MOI) properties. The technology built into the E523 Driver is all about easy launch, consistent playability, and maximum forgiveness across the entire face.

Houdini Sole Technology - The Houdini Sole includes an area of mass concentrated on the trailing edge of the sole of the clubhead, as well as a curved leading edge under the face. This unique and patented design allows engineers to precisely position weight in the head for an ultra-low and deep CG, optimizing launch conditions and greatly improving stability.

High Moment of Inertia – An extremely high MOI makes this driver an extremely stable and powerful weapon off the tee. This increased MOI will improve ball speed on miss-hits and will keep shots straighter, while the back and low CG positioning creates high-flying, powerful tee shots.

Ridgeback Technology – TE engineers have brought the Ridgeback Tech concept from Exotics to Hot Launch on the E523 Driver with a Ridgeback rail on the crown. The Ridgeback rail provides increased structural properties that help produce more power on across the entire face, including the extreme perimeters. The Ridgeback activation also is utilized as a unique alignment aid at address.

Power Channel – The Power Channel on the sole of the club behind the face is new to the E523 Driver and provides a myriad of performance benefits. The Power Channel distributes weight to promote increased face flexing, amplified ball speed and less spin, as well as added forgiveness on shots struck lower on the face.

Diamond Face VFT - Diamond Face Variable Face Thickness technology is a breakthrough in face technology that features 39 different thick and thin diamond shapes or “mini-trampolines” behind the face. Diamond Face VFT produces a hotter face with faster ball speeds and better performance on off-center hits, as well as reduced spin.

Heel Weighted Slice-Fighting Offset Design - Offset designs are combined with a heel sole weight to provide the ultimate in slice fighting technology. The offset design of the E523 Driver added with a heel sole weight   allows the face to square up at impact for straighter ball flight.

The E523 driver features a redesigned Houdinia sole that moves low and deep for extremely high moi and the easiest launch possible.

Judd Trump reveals approach from rival tour and why he snubbed it

author image

Cazoo World Snooker Championship 2024 - Day Eight

Judd Trump says he was approached about joining a rival snooker tour but dismissed the suggestion out of hand, happy where he is and focussed on more success.

Rumours of a breakaway tour have grown louder in recent weeks, with Mark Williams hinting he could be playing snooker away from the WST circuit and Barry Hearn directly addressing the speculation, but dismissing it as a threat.

Ronnie O’Sullivan will not be on any rival tour, but backed any players who feel their best opportunities are elsewhere.

Trump, who would certainly be a star attraction of any rival tour, is not interested, more than happy with the playing and earning opportunities he has at the moment.

‘I tried to keep myself away from that. I think a few people have tried to contact me and I just couldn’t be bothered,’ Trump said. ‘I’m very happy where I am, with the tournaments I play in. I need something with history, heritage and those kind of venues. I need something to play for. I don’t think I would really get out of bed for an exhibition series.

‘I want the biggest challenges and I look forward to hopefully playing in more different places. I’m just trying to win every single tournament and trying to get back to [world] number one.’

On where the approach came from, Trump said: ‘To be honest, I don’t know. I don’t even get that far. If anyone tries to contact me or my brother I just tell them to go away. I’m not interested one bit at this moment. I feel like now I’m in my prime…if I was at the end of my career maybe it would be different, but I don’t want to be wasting my prime away on exhibition games.

Cazoo World Snooker Championship 2024 - Day Eight

‘[The approach was] a few months ago, but they came to my brother, he asked if I wanted to listen and I said no, just go away. Everyone’s different but with my season I just want to win everything. I feel like with new tournaments being announced, more prize money, I’m happy travelling the circuit.’

The attraction of a rival tour is the reported guaranteed fee of around £300,000, regardless of any matches being won or not.

The 34-year-old has won over £700,000 in ranking events alone this season, but regardless of the amounts involved he says he would rather win money than be handed it.

‘For me it’s about the titles. At the end of the day everyone wants more money but this isn’t the right time for me,’ he said. ‘I’d be a lot happier winning my money rather than getting gifted it.

‘At this moment, with where I am in my career and how I’m playing and the success I’ve had over the last five or six years I feel I can really earn that money and feel a sense of achievement. I think that’s something my mum and dad would want as well. So I think my mum and dad would be more proud if I did it that way.

‘I don’t want to lose and feel nothing. I hate losing. I couldn’t imagine walking off and getting paid the same win or lose. It’s not the same for me. I’d love for World Snooker to big up the prize money and play for more in the future but I want to do it with something on the line.’

Clearly it is good news for World Snooker Tour that Trump and O’Sullivan are staying put and the Ace feels that the idea of a split in the sport is not too much of a concern.

‘I don’t think there’s any real worry, I don’t think there’s enough players or enough names that could do damage,’ he said. ‘I think Ronnie is the only one if he left, but to be honest I don’t think people are that bothered by anyone else.

‘I feel like what I’ve established in the game alongside Ronnie, if I’m staying here then the tour will be a strong place.’

Cazoo World Snooker Championship 2024 - Day Five

Williams has been the player most openly flirting in public with a move away from the main tour, and while Trump cannot put himself in the 49-year-old’s position, he says he may live to regret the move and could not make the switch at all.

‘I think a lot of the things said have come from the older players. They’ve seen it, done it, it’s hard for me to judge, I’m not in their position, I haven’t won what they’ve won,’ said Trump.

‘Maybe from Mark Williams ’ comments and the passion he showed in winning the Tour Championship. You could see how much it means to him and how much competing still means to him and just being able to beat Ronnie in that kind of competition means the world to him. You can see it now more than ever.

‘I think they certainly will [regret it]. But I’m not sure they will [leave]. A lot of people say stuff in the heat of the moment a lot of times, I’m not sure when they think about it at the end of the season, with new tournaments being announced, more prize money, I think it’s heat of the moment.’

2024 Cazoo World Snooker Championship - Day 7

Trump beat Tom Ford 13-7 in the second round of the World Championship on Saturday, booking a quarter-final meeting with either Si Jiahui or Jak Jones.

World number 14 Ford was also asked if he has been approached by any rival tour but he says he has heard nothing and will be on the main tour next season.

‘I’ve not really heard anything about it,’ he said. ‘I must be the only top 16 player that doesn’t know anything about it. I’ll still be here.’

Tour Edge C522 Driver Review

Tour Edge doesn't get the credit it deserves for its R&D efforts and the highly functional, highly affordable C522 driver is another great product from the underappreciated company. From a performance standpoint, the C522 is long, forgiving, and consistent, and it's one of the best values in golf in any category at its price point.

Impressive forgiveness on off-center strikes

Extremely consistent in terms of flight and distance

Classic shaping, premium look

Incredible value at its price

No adjustability

Limited shaft options to choose from

Why you can trust Golf Monthly Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test .

Chris Wallace

So I’ll just come right out and say it. I like Tour Edge. I like the company’s equipment from a technology and performance standpoint, and I appreciate their consistent, unwavering approach to carving out a spot in the marketplace. There have been times, however, where keeping up with all of the various products that the company offered was a difficult task, and navigating their website in years past posed challenges.

But Tour Edge has rectified that issue as well by simplifying their product offerings into two categories, the Exotics category, which are their premium products, and the Hot Launch category, which are their more entry level, budget-friendly offerings. For 2022, Exotics products have been labeled as the 722 series and Hot Launch products as the 522 series. It’s a better system and one that I’m sure has been effective with Tour Edge's growing consumer base.

I recently had the chance to test the C522 driver from Tour Edge , which checks in at a retail price of just $249, which is about as low as you’re going to see for a new driver from an established golf manufacturer. And to be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect. After all, with other top drivers checking in at prices ranging from roughly $450 to $600, including the Tour Edge C722 and E722 , could the C522 driver really be competitive from a performance standpoint? That answer is a resounding yes.

Tour Edge C522 Driver

The Tour Edge C522 driver has a large, confidence-inspiring profile but a traditional rounded shape.

I did all of my testing of the C522 driver at Atlanta National Golf Club. I spent one day hitting only drivers on the course with the C522, a 2017 Callaway Epic Sub Zero, which is my current gamer, and the Mizuno ST-Z 220 , which I have been experimenting with in recent weeks, to see how they compared in terms of sound, feel, distance, and forgiveness. All three drivers were tested at 10.5 degrees of loft and at a length of 45 inches. I then played two full rounds with the 522 to see how it would fare in scoring situations. The result of those sessions was an incredible showing from the C522, as it earned just the third 5-star rating that I’ve handed out since joining Golf Monthly.

I’ll start with the look of the C522. The overall profile is on the larger side, inspiring confidence at address, but the shaping is more traditional, best described as a rounded, pear shape, which appealed to my eye. The most distinguishing feature was probably the topline of the driver, which was very straight. As a comparison, the closest I can come up with from recent years would be the Titleist TS2 in that regard. The C522 also doesn’t look like a budget driver. From an aesthetics standpoint, it has a simple yet premium appearance.

From a sound and feel standpoint, the C522 is quite a bit louder than the two drivers I tested it against, which wasn’t a surprise. The Epic and the ST-Z 220 both have carbon crowns and deliver a more muted impact sound, which is what I prefer. The C522, on the other hand, is all titanium. And while it was louder, it wasn’t Nike Sasquatch loud, rather more in line with what you might expect from many Ping drivers.

Tour Edge C522 driver face

The C522 delivered the forgiveness that was expected but exceeded expectations in terms of distance.

In terms of performance, I fully expected the C522 to provide a high level of forgiveness. Tour Edge went to great lengths to position weight low and deep in the clubhead to increase MOI, including a fixed weight at the rear of the sole. That technology delivered, as the C522 was extremely playable on mis-hits, ranking easily as one of the most forgiving drivers I’ve tested in 2022. It also performed especially well in terms of distance and direction on shots that were hit low on the face, which is my most common miss.

Where the C522 exceeded all expectations was in terms of distance. I expected a high, spinny ball flight that would find fairways but not measure up in terms of yardage. It didn’t take long, however, to find out that such an assessment would be off base. When I was comparing drivers on the course, I started on No. 5 at my club. Using Titleist Pro V1x golf balls , I hit three shots with each driver, and the C522 produced the longest shot of the nine I hit off that tee. As the day progressed and I continued that pattern, the C522 wasn’t always the longest, but it was at times and it was always competitive.

The C522 impressed as well from a distance standpoint during the rounds I played, as I typically found myself in spots on the course where I most usually end up off the tee. I also found that the ball flight the C522 produced was very consistent, on the higher side with just a slight draw. That said, I was able to flight the ball down if I wanted to and work it the other direction if needed. And as mentioned earlier, finding fairways was never a concern.

Tour Edge C522 Driver

The C522 driver is one of the best values in golf regardless of category.

While it scored high marks for me, there are a few things that should be noted about the C522 driver. It does not have an adjustable hosel and the lone stock shaft offering is the lightweight Mitsubishi Fubuki HL, which ranges in weight from 45 to 55 grams degrees depending on flex. I swing the driver at about 100 mph and don’t put a lot of stress on the shaft so I can play a lighter shaft without many issues, but for high-speed players the Fubuki HL shaft probably won't be a great fit. I do believe, however, that this driver will fit the vast majority of golfers just fine.

In summary, I couldn’t have been more impressed with the C522 driver. That Tour Edge can deliver this kind of performance at $249 is a testament to the company, and this is a great option for players who might be new to the game or experienced golfers who are looking for exceptional performance in what is essentially a budget driver . I’m certainly not saying that the C522 is the best driver on the market right now, but at its price point if there’s anything even close I’d have to see it to believe it.

In his role at Golf Monthly, Chris reviews a broad spectrum of golf equipment, ranging from the latest in golf clubs to what’s new in the world of golf technology. His vast experience in the game allows him to look beyond the marketing hype to judge the merits of the latest equipment for golfers of all ability levels. As for the trend in golf equipment that Chris has been most impressed with in recent years, the Players Distance Iron category would earn that distinction, as golfers now have far better options for irons that provide the assistance that so many need in terms of distance and forgiveness without forcing them to sacrifice look and feel.

On a personal level, Chris played college golf and was a three-year letterwinner and two-year captain at Lynchburg College in Virginia and later spent two years as the assistant golf coach at the University of Virginia. The vast majority of his professional career, however, has been spent as a sports writer and editor. In the early phases of his career, he covered college football, college basketball, and golf for different newspapers and websites before turning his attention solely to golf in 2011. Over the course of the past decade, Chris managed the Instruction Blog for GolfChannel.com and more recently created equipment-related content for TGW.com and 2ndSwing.com.

An avid player, Chris currently maintains a handicap index of 2.4 and has a career-low round of 66, which he has shot on three occasions. He lives about 20 miles north of Atlanta in Roswell, Georgia, with his wife, Stacey, and is a member at Atlanta National Golf Club.
