Kayaking on Lake Powell

Lake Powell is one of the largest artificial lakes in the United States, with over 2,000 miles of shoreline to explore. Our kayak rental Lake Powell and the tour will take you to some of the most scenic spots on the lake, including hidden coves, towering rock formations, and sandy beaches. You'll have plenty of time to relax, swim, and soak up the sun. In 1963, the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam created Lake Powell, located on the Colorado River. The dam is one of the most significant concrete structures in the world, standing at 710 feet tall. Lake Powell is also one of the largest man-made lakes in the United States, with a surface area of 162,700 acres and a maximum depth of 560 feet. The lake receives water from the Colorado River and several other smaller tributaries, and people use it for irrigation, drinking water, and hydroelectric power.

Glen Canyon Dam

The Glen Canyon Dam is an engineering marvel providing power to millions across the Southwest. The dam is open for tours; visitors can learn about its history and construction. You can also take a guided tour of the power plant and see how the dam generates electricity.

Lake Powell Water Temperature

During the summer, Lake Powell's water temperature can reach 80 degrees Fahrenheit, making it the perfect place to cool off on a hot day. However, taking precautions and wearing appropriate clothing and sun protection is essential, as the sun can be intense in the desert climate. Water temperature fluctuates throughout the year, so ask your guide or contact us directly with questions.

Lake Powell Water Level

Lake Powell Water Level Report

The water level of Lake Powell is presently at a historic low. However, in 2023, we expect a considerable summer runoff from the Rockies, but in the meantime, let us enjoy the currently exposed, long-forgotten, and previously hidden body of water that is temporarily available for us to enjoy. This unprecedented low water level has resulted in longer slot canyons for hiking and taller canyon walls, making Lake Powell an even more remarkable experience for paddle-boarders and kayakers. Despite the altered launch areas, Lake Powell remains incredibly accessible for kayaks, paddle boards, and boats. Additionally, due to the closure of boat ramps, there is less motorboat traffic on the lake, making it an even better paddle experience. We offer hassle-free rentals, including setup, delivery, and pickup for you and your friends. So why wait? Make your way to Lake Powell today!

Isla Espiritu Santo Kayak Sojourn

English

Sea Kayak Espiritu Santo Island

Isla Espiritu Santo, off the coast of La Paz in Baja, features some of the most beautiful beaches in the world coupled with unique wildlife experiences. A snorkeling-friendly colony of sea lions and a nearby population of plankton-eating whale sharks make Espiritu Santo an extraordinary destination for kayakers and wildlife enthusiasts alike. Join us on this spectacular island, and fall in love with Baja's startling beauty.

Sea Kayak Adventures classic Baja kayaking trip blends fun-filled days of sea kayaking in the tranquil waters surrounding Isla Espirito Santo, a National Park and UNESCO Biosphere located just north of La Paz, Baja. The island features numerous deep coves with beautiful white sand beaches hidden between sienna-hued headlands jutting out of turquoise waves. The island hosts spectacular beaches that were voted by the Travel Magazine as some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Espiritu Santo (Holy Spirit) Island is uninhabited unless you count pelicans, parrot fish and dolphins.

One of the trip highlights is snorkeling with friendly sea lions at Los Islotes, volcanic islets where playful sea lion pups dive off the rocks and pirouette below you. Other activities include hiking up colorful arroyos studded with tall cactus, snorkeling amongst hundreds of tropical fish, paddling below fantastic rock formations, and enjoying margaritas on the beach as the sun sets. Our motorized support boat carries all camping gear and the makings for fabulous meals prepared by your guides with a Mexican flair. Your kayaks are light and easy to paddle between camps while the accompanying motorboat provides an additional level of safety.

ADD A DAY TO SNORKEL WITH WHALE SHARKS: Don't miss out on the opportunity to snorkel with these gentle giants during your trip to La Paz. This day tour is specifically designed to add on to either end of your kayaking trip and is the perfect complement to your vacation experience.  La Paz is one of the few places in the World where you will have the opportunity to observe, interact and learn about these docile fish. A local whale shark guide accompanies you on your swim. Their knowledge and passion for whale sharks are obvious as they work to make your time swimming in La Paz educative, meaningful, and memorable.

You'll board a boat for our shuttle to Espiritu Santo island. Upon arrival to the beach, your guides will teach you the basics of paddling and thoroughly review safety procedures. You won't leave shore until all participants feel comfortable in the boats, and then you will kayak to the first night's campsite. Our motorized support boat carries all the heavy gear, food and water so your kayaks are light and easy to paddle.

ACCOMMODATION : beach camping

MEALS INCLUDED : Lunch, Dinner

Sea Kayak, Snorkel, Hike, Wildlife Watch and Beach Camping

Awake to freshly brewed coffee and tea as the sunrise spills golden light onto this serene desert island. After a warm breakfast prepared by your guides, you'll pack your belongings into the kayaks for the morning paddle. Expect to kayak about 4 hours per day, including floating rest stops, moving along the coast to a new campsite each night. You'll enjoy a long lunch break between the morning and afternoon paddle, and occasional floating rest stops while kayaking. During lunch and before happy hour, you'll have plenty of opportunity for snorkeling with Baja's plentiful reef fish, hiking the island's arroyo trails, or just relaxing on the sandy beaches. Enjoy stunning landscapes, unique geology, and watch as the subtle nuances of the Baja desert landscape unfolds into a natural masterpiece through interpretive hikes and talks by your highly-educated guides. At night, the lack of light pollution reveals constellations you've never seen! Enjoy the stars through the comfort of your dome-tent, or sleep underneath them on the sand. When the moon hides behind the canyon peaks, you can even see brightly-glowing blue bioluminescence in the water.

MEALS INCLUDED : Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Snorkel with Sea Lions at Los Islotes, Return to LaPaz

After a final breakfast, you'll take a short motorboat ride to visit the friendly sea lions at Los Islotes. This colony is accustomed to people snorkeling among them, and curious pups are often eager to interact with people. After getting your fill of whiskers and flippers, the panga will drive you back to La Paz and the hotel (ah, showers!). Please note: Most of our tours on Isla Espiritu Santo include a trip on the first or last day of the kayak tour to snorkel with these playful animals. The timing of this day will be determined by your guides and the weather forecast. Due to the length of the boat ride to and from Los Islotes, you likely will not kayak on this day.

You're invited this evening to join your group and guides for a farewell dinner at a delicious local restaurant (not included in the trip cost). Recount your tales and toast your new friends before relaxing into a real bed.

MEALS INCLUDED : Breakfast, Lunch

OPTIONAL:   ADD A DAY TO SNORKEL WITH WHALE SHARKS

Note : If you are not extending your stay to snorkel with whale sharks, day 6 will be your departure day.

Extend your stay in La Paz a day before or after your kayak tour for a chance to snorkel with whale sharks. These plankton-eaters are the world's largest fish, and can reach lengths of up to 42' (13 m)! Whale sharks migrate into the bay of La Paz from October through April, where the shallow water of the bay harbors the favorite treats of these filter-feeding animals. Meet your guides bright and early to get a head start on the water in search of these peaceful creatures. The tour is approximately four hours, depending on the number of whale sharks present, so you'll have time to spend the afternoon exploring La Paz's beautiful Malecon.

MEALS INCLUDED : Lunch

Return Home

Visit the hotel cafe or a local restaurant for breakfast before your departure. Depending on your flight arrangements, you may have time for a morning promenade on the malecon of La Paz bay to say your farewells to Baja. If you're flying via San Jose del Cabo, ensure that you have adequate time in your itinerary to shuttle from La Paz to Cabo.

WEATHER-CAUSED TRIP ALTERATIONS

Strong winds and/or rough water conditions sometimes prevent our trips from going as scheduled. We are at the mercy of nature, as well as the local Port Captains who determine if ports are open or closed.  In particular, on our La Paz-based trips, winds may prevent us from crossing from the Port to Espiritu Santo Island which may also be reason for the Port Captain to close the port or prohibit crossing.  In these cases there are different solutions.  Sometimes we have to delay the crossing by a day or two, or have to leave Espiritu Santo Island a day or two early.  In these cases we provide a substitute activity for the day(s) we cannot kayak.  If the weather forecast predicts a series of days with strong winds, we also reserve the right to transfer the trip to Magdalena Bay on the Pacific Coast, which is almost always in calm, protected waters.  We recognize this isn't ideal, however we have no control over nature.  Most people prefer to still have a trip going, versus no kayak trip at all.  Decisions to alter trips are not made until the last minute*, since we are basing our decisions on wind and weather forecasts that can change.  Your guides will inform you at the evening orientation meeting if the trip location has changed or the itinerary has been altered. We use apps like Windy or Windfinder Pro to monitor winds and forecasts.  The safety and security of our trips is the primary focus of our decisions.

If you purchase Trip Insurance and wish to cancel on the day of the trip, the "Trip Interruption" coverage may apply if Mexican authorities have closed the Port.  If you have questions about your coverage, call the toll-free number on your Travel Insurance policy to ask.  Neither our guides nor our office staff can determine if coverage will apply. Sea Kayak Adventures does reserve the right to modify and alter trip itineraries and in these circumstances will not provide any refund of trip monies paid.

*Last-minute means no sooner than noon the day prior.  Final information will be provided at the evening orientation meeting.

ALL PRICES IN US DOLLARS.  We will do our best to adhere to the itineraries and trip descriptions listed on our website. However, tour itineraries or sub contractors (such as taxi, cruise boats or hotels) may change slightly due to reasons beyond our control including but not limited to Acts of God, wind, waves, inclement weather or other. We always welcome you to call us to clarify any item - often this is the best way to fully clarify expectations - call us collect or on our toll-free number. You will be sent pre-trip email with latest details within a month of your tour - it is your responsibility to check in with us prior to your trip to see if you have all the information you need. We will always do our best to provide you with the best possible tour and to fully meet your expectations to the best of our ability.

Amazing trip

We had an amazing trip to Espiritu Santo with Sea Kayak adventures. We stayed on beautiful beaches each night, the food was amazing, and we got to do a variety of great activities (e.g., hiking, snorkeling, kayaking) each day. The guides (Amarata, Tico, Mario, Nathan, Piro) were fantastic. They shared great knowledge about the area, always ensured we were safe, answered tons of questions, and were always warm and welcoming. Two people in our party needed a gluten free diet and another guest was vegetarian. They made amazing meals with options for everyone. The administrative and booking side was also great and the customer service overall was excellent. I’d highly recommend this company and this trip.

Our guides were fantastic

Great kayaking, snorkeling, hiking trip with Sea Kayak Adventures on Isla Espiritu Santo. Our guides were fantastic and made great effort to share their knowledge and love of the place. This is a very special place, totally worth exploring!

A great second half of our trip

Espritu Santo kayak trip was the second part of our "wildlife safari". It was amazing! Started with Mariana taking to see whale sharks. She was a very good snorkel and safety coach. Her enthusiasm, knowledge and ability was outstanding. Tico was running the panga - super boat handling skills that I became even more impressed with later in the trip. The next day we headed to Espritu Santo with Tico and Mario. Mario's background in marine biology made the trip extremely interesting. As a bonus he was well read and it made for interesting conversations. He he was very competent in a sea kayak and very safety conscious. Tico's cooking was amazing. His local knowledge of culture also added to the experience. Took us on a great snorkel "hike" on day four. Overall worth every peso! Saw humpback whales breeching, endemic ringtail cats, sea lions, amazing reef fish, many new and familiar birds. Just a superb way to experience the ecology of Baja. Lastly, both Tico and Mario exemplified great conservation ethic and outstanding Leave-no-Trace practices.

Not Included: Airfare, transportation to and from airport, hotel nights before and after activities, gratuities, $25 National Parks & Biosphere Reserves access fees required by itinerary, and items of a personal nature.

Are your kayak trips motorboat supported?

Yes, if at any time a guest does not want to paddle they are welcome to ride in the panga instead.

What are the physical requirements for this trip?

When stopping at shore, you should be able to climb in and out of the kayaks on your own. They will be floating in calf-deep water. Your guides are happy to assist, but balance and limberness are required. When you get to your evening campsite, all group members must to be able to help carry the kayaks above the high tide line, in teams of 6-8, before the group disperses. You will change camp sites almost every night, but may have a layover day. Camp sites are assigned by the National Park Service immediately prior to the tour.

What’s camp like? Are there toilets and showers at camp?

When you get to your evening campsite all group members must be able to help carry the kayaks above the high tide line. You will change campsites almost every night, but may have a layover day. Campsites are assigned by the National Park Service immediately prior to the tour. We endeavor to secure the very best campsites for the natural beauty and amenities of the area. Your guides will give a demonstration of how to set up and take down your provided dome tent. We also will provide you with a sleeping bag, liner sheet, pillow and an inflatable thermarest sleeping pad. There will be a kitchen/dining area and shade tarps where you can sit back and relax.

While kayaking, we can only carry enough fresh water for drinking and cooking. There are no fresh water sources on most of the coastline and islands we visit. You can clean up with saltwater and soap off above the high tide line, or bring disposable shower wipes. A porta potty will fit into a hatch of the kayak or on the panga support boat, and will be transported to each campsite and set into a sheltered area for solid waste. Liquid waste can be expelled below the high tide line, or in a separate porta-potty bucket.

When is the best time to go?

Spring and fall are the most ideal times for yoga on the beaches of the Sea of Cortez, as the seasons are characterized by warm days, glassy calm waters for paddling, and endless sunshine. Fall trips enjoy the chance for a desert in bloom and warm water snorkeling, while during spring, many cetaceans migrate into the Sea of Cortez and sightings may include blue, fin, and humpback whales.

What happens if it’s too windy to paddle?

If it’s too windy to paddle your guides will have alternative activities for guests to enjoy. There are opportunities to snorkel, hike or just relax on the beach with a margarita. We plan our itineraries to minimize risks posed by weather, but there is always an element of unpredictability in nature. The risk capsizing is reduced by our stable boats, but exists. All of our kayak guides are certified in kayak rescue.

What are the highlights of this tour?

La Paz offers some unusual highlights, such as swimming with playful sea lion pups and the chance to see Whale Sharks (harmless plankton eaters, and the largest fish on the planet!). Espiritu Santo is stunningly beautiful, with deep coves of turquoise water surrounded by white sand beaches and burnt sienna colored volcanic cliffs. Additionally, because La Paz is only a couple hours from Los Cabos (via a shuttle service from the airport), the city is easily accessible by air. You can also fly directly to La Paz.

Can I fish?

In general, fishing in allowed in La Paz. You would need to obtain a fishing license either before arriving or upon arrival. Our guides will not allow fishing if you are unable to produce a valid license. You will also need to bring all of your own fishing equipment. Along our kayaking routes there are areas where fishing is allowed, the guides will let you know where fishing is prohibited. Also, fishing is only allowed at the guide's discretion, as we have an itinerary, schedule and other group members that we have to take into consideration.

What’s the difference between Loreto & La Paz?

If you are having trouble deciding between the two destinations we suggest reading this Blog detailing the differences between Loreto and LaPaz.

What gear do I need?

Sea Kayak Adventures will provide you with a detailed packing list prior to your trip. We provide all of the necessary camping, paddling and snorkeling equipment, which you will need to fully enjoy your adventure. If you are interested in more specific information, check out our general Baja packing list here! If you have any questions, or need help deciding what to bring, you can call or e-mail one of our friendly Adventure Consultants at any time for some extra advice!

What kind of food will I eat? Do you accommodate dietary restrictions?

Our renowned wilderness meals are prepared daily by our guides using local, fresh, healthy ingredients. In Baja you can expect an authentic dining experience, with savory dishes like chiles rellenos, tostadas, ceviche, and chicken mole. We even serve delicious desserts like brownies and pineapple upside-down cake! Each morning, we serve up freshly brewed coffee or tea. Throughout the day we provide an abundance of local fruits, vegetables, and other snacks. Wine and mixed drinks are served with hors d’oeuvres each evening for happy hour.

We do our best to accommodate special dietary requests, working within the parameters of the destinations in which we operate. If you have a very strict diet, we recommend packing extra snacks that you know you can eat.

What’s the weather like in Baja?

Please check out this great website Weather Underground for temperature averages in Baja.

Where can I store my luggage while I’m on your tour?

You can leave your luggage at your hotel while you are on tour. We recommend getting a luggage lock if you are leaving any electronics in the bags. We’ve never had any issues with guests leaving their bags at the hotel but it’s always better to be safe just in case. Please ensure any details with your hotel upon check in.

Is there any extensions I can add to the beginning or end of my trip?

If you will be extending your stay in lovely LaPaz before or after your tour, consider joining us for a day to snorkel with Whale Sharks . La Paz is home to a unique and prolific Whale Shark population.  Don't miss the adrenaline rush of snorkeling with these gentle giants, while simultaneously learning about this unique species. Please inquire with the office if you would like to add on a Whale Shark tour to your reservation.

Took my wife and 4 kids on the kayak and snorkel tour. Our two tour guides were great to work with. They were helpful and made sure everyone was safe and enjoyed their trip. We had an 11, 14, 16, and 18 year old with us.

You are given kayaking instruction so that you’re comfortable being out on the water. It was my first time kayaking but I felt safe, confident, and just really excited to be out in the ocean. They want you to feel safe and they want you to have fun!

This was an incredible experience! The staff aids you getting in, out and through the water and they were so helpful, nice and attentive…I got to see some sea lions and seals up close…which was absolutely amazing!

La Jolla Kayak has been my favorite place for kayak tours and rentals since they opened about 20 years ago. We have taken probably dozens of family and friends, and everyone always loves it.

Experience Thrilling Adventures with these 8 La Jolla Kayak Tours

E veryone that visits San Diego should do one of the La Jolla Kayak tours at least once. There’s nothing more peaceful than going to spot gorgeous coves and intriguing caves in the calm ocean while the sun is shining.

Undoubtedly, La Jolla is one of the best places in San Diego for a kayaking adventure. There are numerous kayak tour opportunities from hillside towns. These tours allow visitors to hit the Pacific Ocean and see unique forms of nature and wildlife.

Greg and I love kayaking in La Jolla and it is always a fun outing. It is pretty beginner friendly too, so even if you have never been in a kayak before, this is totally doable. The only tricky part is getting through the waves on the shore, but the kayaking tour guides will help you through. You will get wet though, so I recommend leaving your valuables in the provided lockers or bringing a little floating dry bag to keep your things safe. Definitely wear sunscreen and I recommend a hat and, unless you wear only swimwear, some quick-drying clothes (or bring some to change into later).

Here’s our list of the top kayak tours in La Jolla, you must check these out during your visit!

The Best La Jolla Kayak Tours

La jolla sea caves kayak tour.

This hour and a half sea cave kayak tour will take you inside the area’s caves with the help of expert tour guides. Soak up some gorgeous scenery while catching glimpses of marine life, including sea birds, sea lions, seals, even occasionally dolphins or a sea turtle.

Grab the chance to paddle through stunning kelp beds surrounding the La Jolla Ecological Reserve & Underwater Park . Bring your GoPro because you want to ensure you get some snaps of this.

The tour provides all equipment, including a life jacket, kayaks and paddles, and a wet suit if you prefer to wear one.

Morning or afternoon departure times are available, and your guide will meet you at Avenida de la Playa in La Jolla. Before you head out to the water, full training and safety procedures will be provided.

As soon as everyone is good to go, drag your boat to the sea for a great time!

La Jolla Sea Cave Kayak Tour for Two

If you’re looking for more of a private La Jolla kayak cave tour, this hour and a half excursion for two might be up your alley.

Follow your guide, who knows the La Jolla sea caves more than anyone else, as they bring you through many diverse ecological habitats.

See the likes of the wonderful Emerald Cove, the only north-facing cove in the whole state of California. Snap up the chance to get close to sea life, such as harbor seals, otters, and sea lions.

No prior experience is required on this tour. Your group of two will be shown all you need to know before heading out into sea. Use of the company’s gear and equipment is included in the price, e.g., life jackets, kayaks, etc. If you’d like to rent a wetsuit or locker, you can do so for an added fee.

Each participant must arrive at the departure location 30 minutes before to get organized. The staff members will get you ready and outfitted so it doesn’t cut into your kayaking time.

2 Hour Whale Watching Kayak Tour for Two

Now, for something a little different. This two hour sea kayaking La Jolla tour brings you to see grey whales.

Yes, you read that right. Enjoy an intimate experience for two people as you paddle your way off the coast of La Jolla in the hope of seeing grey whales. Learn about the creature’s behavior and how they live their lives while seeing La Jolla from a whole other perspective.

The tour’s meeting point will be 2261 Avenida De La Playa, La Jolla, Ca, 92037. Get there 30 minutes before to get geared up. From there you’ll head down to the beach for your safety briefing and tutorial with a certified guide. Depart from the shores and head 2 miles out to try to spot some whales.

There will be plenty of breaks along the way for you to rehydrate and explanations about the marine life. One great thing about this activity is that the company donates a percentage of every booking to Greenwave & Urban Surf 4 Kids, so your money goes toward a good cause.

Kayak Tour of the 7 Caves

Seeing the seven impressive caves of La Jolla on your own without a guide can be a difficult and dangerous task. Join this two hour La Jolla cove kayaking tour to discover the popular seven caves, including Arch Cave, Clams’ Cave, and Jim’s Cave.

Float through the water seeing places you wouldn’t be able to alone. Admire awe-inspiring sandstone formations while learning how they were created. Get up close to leopard sharks, sea lions, dolphins, and more.

Anyone who hasn’t kayaked before will get full training upon arrival. By the time you get back to shore, you’ll be a professional. All equipment needed is included: helmets, life jackets, and of course, your La Jolla kayak rental.

Leave all valuables behind before heading out to sea. You’re promised to get wet, at least from the waist down, on this tour.

Like most tours on this list, get to the meeting point 30 minutes early. Your guide will meet you at 2158 Avenida De La Playa.

La Jolla Kayak and Snorkel Tour

Why just kayak when you can snorkel as well? This two and a half hour La Jolla kayak snorkel tour is set in the Ecological Reserve, and wow, it’s an experience you don’t want to miss out on.

Kayak your way from the La Jolla shores through jaw-dropping caves before heading out to open water for snorkeling. Wave at the leopard sharks as they swim around you — don’t be frightened, they won’t harm you. Other forms of sea life can be seen, too, like rays, shovelnose guitarfish, rockfish, sea lions, and spiny lobster. You’ll feel like one of them for a couple of hours.

The sea cave kayak and snorkeling tour includes essential gear like masks, fins, paddles, etc. If you do happen to have your own snorkeling equipment, you’re allowed to bring it along and use it. Just let the company know before.

An experienced guide will be in a nearby kayak at all times in case there’s trouble with gear or you need anything.

Kayak Rental For Two People From La Jolla Shores

Escape the hustle and bustle of the San Diego lifestyle and spend time with your significant other, best friend, or child on this hour and a half double kayak tour of the La Jolla caves.

Row yourselves around the La Jolla Ecological Reserve at a pace that suits both of you. There’s no guide with you, so you can check out whatever you want.

A safety briefing will be provided before, as well as a list of locations you can and can’t visit. Arrive at the meeting point (Everyday California’s Office) 30 minutes early, your kayak and paddles will be waiting.

Depending on the time of year, kayakers may see different species of fish, seals, sea lions, dolphins, and whales. Don’t panic if you do! They’re enjoying the water as much as you are and won’t harm you.

Anyone who takes part in this La Jolla shores kayaking excursion must be a competent swimmer in case the kayak topples over when you’re out at sea alone. Unfortunately, you cannot bring the kayak inside any of the 7 caves. If you want to look inside, consider one of the other tours on this list instead.

90 Minute Kayak Rental In La Jolla

Take part in a 90 minute guided kayak tour of La Jolla. Grasp the basics of Kayaking, from steering to paddling, and see a whole new side to La Jolla you never even knew existed. Follow your guide past the breathtaking caves, charming kelp forests, and underwater canyons while listening to interesting stories and facts.

With some luck, you might see different types of dolphins that are known to congregate around certain areas. These include bottlenose dolphins, white-sided dolphins, and common dolphins.

On average, each tour covers about six miles round trip. So, you’ll be kayaking for the majority of the time. Experience isn’t necessary. If you need help, your guide will be by your side every second. When you return to shore, a scorching hot beverage will be waiting for you to warm you up.

Every participant should bring shoes which can get wet, a bathing suit or swimming shorts, sunscreen, and a strap to hold their sunglasses in case they fall into the sea. You can leave a change of clothes and valuables behind in one of the lockers provided.

There’s a minimum booking requirement of two people. The maximum number of people that can go on this tour is nine, so reserve your spot to avoid disappointment.

La Jolla kayak tours are a great way to see areas you wouldn’t be able to on a larger boat. Once you have a guide by your side, it opens up many opportunities. Plus, you know you will be completely safe wherever you go.

Which La Jolla kayak tour will you sign up for?!

  • Mask (will get wet – we recommend cloth or bringing an extra)
  • Cell phone (in the event that we need to contact you or you need to contact us prior to the excursion)
  • Comfortable clothes that can get wet (we recommend a bathing suit or active wear)
  • Shoes that can get wet (flip flops are fine)
  • Towel and change of clothes for after the excursion

MINIMUM PARTICIPATION

This excursion requires a minimum of at least six guests in order to provide the tour. In the event this minimum is not met, we will call you before the excursion to go over alternative options (i.e. reschedule for a different date or time that has the minimum requirement, payment options for a private excursion, or cancel without penalty).

DISCLOSURES

  • Bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon that is unpredictable and subject to change. Therefore, it is impossible to ensure its brightness levels.
  • Depending on the season, it is possible to find large amounts of sargassum (floating algae) during the tour; this is also a natural phenomenon, but it can become uncomfortable.
  • At times, we experience strong winds and currents in the bay, which increases the effort of paddling and physical activity. However, you’ll be paddling out to a lagoon, so you won’t have to worry about waves in open water.
  • Participants must be comfortable with dark environments. Not recommended for guests who may be prone to anxiety while on crowded and reduced spaces.

Kayaking Lesson

First time kayaking no problem.

Check out this video for a couple of tips before joining us on your Bio Bay Kayak Tour.

Photography & Video

Be careful with your camera.

Bioluminescence is almost impossible to capture with regular cameras. Plus, everything in your kayak will get wet. We strongly recommend you be careful with your camera.

If you still want to bring a camera, make sure that it is waterproof. We also recommend that you use a leash to attach it to your life vest. Do not expose expensive and SRL cameras to futile risks. The place will be completely dark. Diving in the lagoon is prohibited. If anything falls in the water, it will be impossible to recover.

Best Touring Kayaks of 2023

If you've started planning full day-long trips, weekend trips, or multi-day trips on flat, open water, you're in the market for a touring kayak. Also known as sea kayaks or ocean kayaks, a touring kayak is typically a sit-inside kayak that has a longer, narrow design that makes it track straight and fast.

Best Touring Kayak Brands

The difficulty in selecting a touring kayak in 2023 is narrowing it down to just one . You need to be careful in selecting a touring kayak that suits your size, planned distances, water types, and experience. You can easily find yourself looking at boats 12'-18', but the right touring boat for you will be different if you are looking for a multi-hour day trip versus a week-long sea kayaking expedition. Fortunately, there are some remarkable touring kayak brands. So if you're not ready to compare model to model, you should get familiar with the best touring kayak brands like:

  • Eddyline Kayaks
  • Delta Kayaks
  • Stellar Kayaks and Surfskis
  • Current Designs
  • ...and several more that you can find in the Touring Kayaks Gear Guide

tour en kayak

Excelling in rough seas, surf and wind, the elegant Delta 16 offers a balanced combination of maneuverability and tracking. This nimble sea kayak stays the course in challenging conditions, holds a lively pace with ease and has plenty of storage capacity for multi-day exploration.

You might also look at the Delta 14 or Delta 15s . The Delta 14 is a versatile touring kayak ideal for multi-day adventures and day trips alike, whereas the Delta 15s is an ideal choice for small- and medium-sized paddlers seeking a performance kayak with great cruising speed, exceptional tracking and superior edging

With substantial rocker and a moderately concave sidewall, the Delta 16 edges with satisfying bite, and turns on a dime. At 16 feet, its performance envelope is best explored by a medium-sized paddler. Features include a low-profile front day hatch, Press-Lock hatches, our Contour II Seat System, and optional rudder or spring-loaded skeg.

The Equinox melds the comfort of recreational kayaks and the performance of a true sea kayak. The efficient hull and hard chines provide stability and glide, while tracking well and turning with ease. An ample cockpit is equipped with thigh braces for excellent control and hip pads and thigh pads for comfort. An adjustable Infinity Seat helps the Equinox fit a wide range of paddlers.

Another seaworthy kayak from Eddyline is the Sitka LT . At a 13'9" length, the Sitka ST (previously the "Samba") is a lightweight, high performing day touring kayak designed to fit the small- to medium-frame paddler.

With its slender bow and slim deck profile, the rudder-equipped Edge 14.5 is where elegance and efficiency cross paths it has just the right amount of chine and keel to make it track well, yet has a swift and versatile character. And to top it all off, it has most of the features serious sea kayaks call their own.

Enjoy days on the water with this comfort-driven kayak. Straight-tracking touring length ideal for hours out on the water. Cloud-soft ACS2 seat delivers comfort and support on long excursions. Bow and stern hatches stash essentials for all-day outings. Removable slide-track storage allows room to mount accessories. Deck bungees hold even more items: dry bags, PFDs, and more. Foot and thigh braces for extra comfort and control. Rudder-ready design boosts turning and tracking management (rudder sold separately)

tour en kayak

Similar to the S16, the Stellar 18 (S18) Touring Kayak was designed for speed and stability on long distance tours. With additional length and reduced beam, this boat glides through the water. Moderate concavity along the keel of the bow and stern helps with tracking in rough conditions. For windy days and following seas, a drop-down rudder off the stern will help keep your course. Higher decks allow for a dryer paddle in rough conditions and a large stern and medium bow compartment provide ample storage for your longer tours.

The Baffin is built for the rigors of rough seas. Its unique hull design provides paddlers with a lively yet stable boat compared to other Greenland style kayaks. The three models in the series are well suited for a wide range of paddlers who demand immediate control and predictability. The generous sized opening of the hatch allows paddlers to load up adequate amounts of gear for up to two weeks, while the day hatch keeps your essentials handy while on the water. The Baffin comes with a full complement of deck rigging and a comfortably outed cockpit.

The NC17 series (pictured) or the NC19 series are extremely fast and efficient touring kayaks.

The NC17 has excellent Rough Water handling characteristics, great tracking and virtually no weathercocking. In Flat Water conditions, they are incredibly smooth and fast! It's designed for large bodies of water including Open Ocean. While still maneuverable enough for great fun on the lake. The NC17 series truly shines in Open Water.

The NC19 series is an incredibly fast touring kayak made for the paddler who wants a larger volume kayak or needs more capacity for extended trips.

  • The NC17 series best fits paddlers measuring 5'0"- 6'2" weighing between 100-240 lbs. with up to a size 13½ shoe.
  • The NC19 best fits paddlers measuring 5'6"- 6'8" weighing between 160-280 lbs. with up to a size 15½" shoe.

The AdvancedFrame® Expedition Elite is the natural evolution of inflatable kayaks. A hybrid of a folding frame kayak and an inflatable kayak, the Expedition incorporates our proven aluminum rib-frame technology in the bow and stern, and Drop-stitch technology in the floor, to provide paddling performance that rivals that of a hard-shell kayak. Working together to deliver optimal paddling performance, the aluminum ribs form a shape that cuts through the water while the Drop-stitch floor provides unparalleled rigidity in an inflatable and creates hull chine. At 13’ long, with plenty of storage space, the Expedition Elite is the perfect kayak for any adventure
