The Best Flores Indonesia Itinerary: A Guide to Backpacking Flores

Flores, Indonesia: Famously known for its incredible dive sites and off-the-beaten-path attractions, Flores is an island that screams adventure!

I spent 2 weeks backpacking Flores where I ventured east of the island in search of new discoveries and new connections. Those who follow suit will be rewarded with culturally rich experiences, beautiful rolling hills, volcano hikes, and incredible scenery.

Here’s the Flores travel guide I wish I had before my trip. It includes the best things to do and how to plan the perfect Flores Indonesia itinerary. If you have any other questions, drop me a message in the comments section at the end of the post, and I’ll be happy to help!

The Best Flores Indonesia Itinerary A Guide to Backpacking Flores

Quick Navigation

How to get to Flores Island, Indonesia

Flores Island is in the East Nusa Tenggara province of Indonesia. It’s a stone’s throw away from Bali and can easily be added to your Bali itinerary.

There are 3 ways to get to Flores Island from Bali.

By air: Bali to Flores

Depending on where you start your Flores overland tour, you can either take a direct flight from Bali to Labuan Bajo which is located on the west side of Flores.

Alternatively, you can fly from Bali to Ende/Maumere on the east side.

This 50-minute flight between Bali and Flores costs around $45, and there are several flights daily.

By Boat: Ferry or liveaboard

If you’re making an Indonesia overland trip from Bali to Flores (which will include Lombok and Sumbawa) , you can easily get to Flores Island via a ferry from Bima in Sumbawa.

This is the cheapest (albeit slowest) way to travel between the islands. The ferry from Labuan Bajo in Flores to Bima in Sumbawa takes 5-7 hours and costs 60 000 IDR ($4).

Backpacking option: liveaboard boat from Lombok to Labuan Bajo

Taking a 4-day boat trip from Lombok to Labuan Baujo is another popular backpacking option to get to Flores, Indonesia.

But it’s not luxurious!

It’s great for adventurous travelers looking to island-hop from Lombok to Sumbawa and then all the way to Komodo National Park, whilst meeting like-minded travelers and sleeping under the stars.

Flores backpacking bucket list

There are so many things to do on Flores Island, and it can be difficult to choose the best activities if you have limited time.

The island is home to some of the most famous places in Indonesia , so I can guarantee that you won’t be disappointed!

Below are my Flores highlights and things that you should not miss when planning your trip.

  • Scuba diving and snorkeling with Manta Rays in the Komodo National Park
  • Seeing Komodo Dragons on Rinca Island
  • Hiking Mount Inerie in Bajawa
  • Drinking Bintangs in the Malanage Hot Springs in Bajawa
  • Island hopping in 17 Island National Park, Riung
  • Witnessing the Kelimutu Crater Lakes in Moni

This itinerary for Flores Island includes all of these (and more)!

Diving the Komodo Islands in Indonesia

How many days in Flores, Indonesia

Flores is not an island you want to explore in a rush.

Each attraction is a far distance from the other. It’s often a case of the journey to get there being better than the actual destination.

I spent 2 weeks backpacking Flores and this is the optimal time needed to explore the island. This allowed me to travel slowly and have “chill” days in between all the adventuring.

If you don’t have as much time, I recommend spending at least 1 week in Flores. But 10 days is ideal!

How to travel Flores Island (Map)

You can either start your overland Flores itinerary from the west side of the island (Labuan Bajo) and make your way to the east (Ende or Maumere) or do it in the opposite direction.

Along this route are numerous places to visit, including Ruteng, Bajawa, Riung, Moni, and Ende.

So here it is, my perfect Flores Indonesia itinerary which includes all the best stops to make on your overland tour.

Flores Indonesia Map

Flores itinerary: 1 week

  • Labuan Bajo: 3 nights
  • Bajawa: 2 nights
  • Moni: 2 nights

Flores itinerary: 10-days

  • Riung: 2 nights

Day 1-3: Komodo Islands (Labuan Bajo)

Time needed : 3 nights

Labuan Bajo is the gateway to the Komodo National Park in Flores, Indonesia.

These islands have put Flores on the map, and no trip to Indonesia is complete without experiencing the natural beauty surrounding Komodo.

From pristine beaches, bright-colored coral, manta rays, Komodo Dragons, and gorgeous viewpoints, the Komodo Islands are a must-see on your Flores itinerary.

tour flores indonesia

Things to do in Labuan Bajo

The port town of Labuan Bajo has very little to offer, so my advice is to head straight to Komodo National Park after your arrival. There are both day tours and multi-day liveaboard options available, depending on your time and budget.

The main road of Labuan Bajo is lined with scores of travel agencies, tour operators, grocery stores, and restaurants. It’s best to shop around until you find a boat tour that suits your preferred itinerary and try to negotiate a good deal.

Below are the main attractions in Komodo National Park.

  • Scuba dive with sharks at Batu Bolong dive site
  • Snorkel with manta rays at Manta Point
  • Visit Rinca Island to see Komodo Dragons
  • Soak up the sun on Pink Beach
  • Catch the sunrise and take a photo on Padar Island

Komodo Islands in Flores Indonesia

Snorkeling day trips or liveaboards

The most popular thing to do in the Komodo Islands is to join a 2D/1N liveaboard. Here, you’ll experience a good mix of snorkeling, beaching, and island hopping.

These liveaboards range from budget and basic to luxurious. Experiencing the beauty of the Komodo Islands is possible for any traveler on any budget.

If you’re backpacking Flores, Indonesia, don’t pay more than 900 000 IDR ($65) for a 2D/1N snorkeling liveaboard, which will include your snorkeling gear and all meals onboard.

There is an additional Komodo National Park entrance fee, which is required and costs 150 000 IDR ($10).

best things to do in Flores Indonesia

Scuba dive the Komodo Islands

If you have your scuba diving certification, diving the Komodo islands will blow your mind away – seriously!

I recommend that you include at least 2 days of diving on your Flores itinerary. Or better yet, join a scuba diving liveaboard as I did.

For budget scuba diving liveaboards, expect to pay around $175 per day for 3 or 4 days. This includes a minimum of 3 dives per day, scuba diving equipment, and all meals.

Where to stay in Labuan Bajo

Seaesta Komodo Hostel & Hotel: Seaesta Komodo Hotel is the perfect place to spend your first night in Labuan Bajo. Not only is it situated in a prime location, but the views from the rooftop pool are also pretty epic! With shared dorm rooms and private ensuite alternatives, it’s a great option for all travelers.

Villa Domanik : If you’re looking for something more private (and luxurious), you’ll love Villa Domanik. Set on a hillside with panoramic views over the Labuan Bajo port, it’s the perfect base for couples or those looking to escape the hustle and bustle.

How to get to Flores Indonesia

Day 4 Flores itinerary: Ruteng

Time needed: 1 night

As you drive 4 hours east of Labuan Bajo, you’ll come across Ruteng, a small village hidden amongst the hills of Flores Island.

Although Ruteng wasn’t on my own Flores backpacking itinerary, I’ve included it here. This is because many people choose to spend the night in Ruteng to break up their trip between Labuan Bajo and Bajawa, which is further east.

So, why didn’t I include Ruteng in my Flores overland itinerary?

Based on feedback from other travelers I’d met, I gathered that the attractions in Ruteng weren’t nearly as bucket-list-worthy as those elsewhere on the island.

If you’re traveling by motorbike or private vehicle, you can easily stop at the sights in Ruteng, take a photo, and continue with your journey. But this isn’t possible with public transport.

Should you include Ruteng on your Flores itinerary

If you have limited time and you’re planning to see the traditional villages in Bajawa, rather give Ruteng a miss and head straight from Labuan Bajo to Bajawa.

Yes, the ride is long (270km) and may take over 8 hours, but at least you’ll get to tick everything off your Flores bucket list.

Flores backpacking itinerary and budget

Things to do in Ruteng

Ruteng is best explored by bike, so after you arrive in the village, organize a motorbike and check out the attractions below.

  • Trek to Wae Rebo traditional village and spend the night with a local family
  • Explore the “hobbit’s cove” where skeletal remains of hobbit humans have been found
  • Check out the spider web rice fields

Where to stay in Ruteng

Sun Rice Homestay: Sun Rice Homestay offers a gorgeous setting nestled amongst the rice fields. The overall experience is hard to beat, especially given the affordable price.

Best places to visit in Flores Indonesia

Day 5-7 Flores itinerary: Bajawa

Time needed: 3 nights (if you don’t climb Mount Inerie, only 2 nights are required)

Of all the places on my Flores Indonesia itinerary, Bajawa was my favorite.

Why? Because I had no expectations!

Known for its cooler climate and incredible scenery, Bajawa’s biggest attraction is Mount Inerie – the highest volcano on the island of Flores.

If you’re coming from Ruteng to Bajawa, the trip shouldn’t take more than 4 hours. But, if you decide to skip Ruteng and go straight to Bajawa from Labuan Bajo, expect a long, 8-10-hour journey.

As with all the destinations in your Flores Indonesia itinerary, it’s best to rent a scooter and explore the nearby attractions on a bike.

what is there to do in Flores Island Indonesia

Best things to do in Bajawa

  • Hike Mount Inerie: You’ll need at least 6 hours for this incredible yet challenging hike, but it really is one of the best things to do in Flores. Read about it here .
  • Swim in the Malanage Hot Springs: This impressive natural hot spring is made of a boiling hot stream that flows into a freezing cold one. I spent hours here with very few other people in sight.
  • Visit Bena Traditional Village: These traditional villages are unique to Flores Island, and visiting them allows you to take a step back in time and see what minimalist living is really about.
  • Check out the Wolobobo viewpoint: This viewpoint offers the best views of Mount Inerie.

Where to stay in Bajawa

Cinnamon Guest House: Cinnamon Guest House boasts a great location in the heart of Bajawa. The large, comfortable rooms are well-priced, and the wonderful owner will go out of his way to ensure you’re happy.

Hiking mount inerie in Bajawa, Flores Island

Day 8-9 Flores itinerary: Riung

Time needed: 2 nights

Riung is a small fishing village north of Flores Island. It’s the gateway to 17 Islands Marine Park , and despite its natural beauty, it’s not included in many travel itineraries for Flores Island.

My initial plan was to head straight from Bajawa to Moni to check out the tri-colored Kelimutu Lakes. But a group of fellow backpackers managed to convince me to add Riung to my Flores travel route.

Riung isn’t for everyone. But if you’re keen to go off the beaten track, make sure you check it out.

Note: Reality time! I’m going to be straight with you: getting from Bajawa to Riung is a bitch. The drive should take 2 hours, but it took us over 4 with public transport. It’s bumpy, slow, and it’s crowded.

Is Flores Indonesia worth visiting

Things to do in Riung

  • Go island hopping in 17 Islands Marine Park: Spend your day on a small boat making your way between several islands just off the coast of Riung. What makes this extra special is that the waters are free from tourist boats which is quite a contrast from island hopping in Komodo National Park.
  • Whilst island hopping is the only thing to do in Riung, the village is so quint and has a unique charm to it. Spend a few hours walking around and watching as the locals go about their daily lives

Where to stay in Riung

Riung Guesthouse : There’s not much choice when it comes to accommodation in Riung. The best place to stay is Riung Guesthouse, which is just a short walk from the port. The price includes a simple breakfast, and the kind owner will assist with booking island hopping tours.

Flores overland tour route and backpacking itinerary

Day 10-11 Flores itinerary: Moni

Moni is home to the famous Mount Kelimutu, a dormant volcano more commonly known for its tri-colored lakes. And yes, they are just as fascinating as the pictures, if not better!

These tri-colored lakes change color drastically due to chemical reactions beneath the surface.

Most people spend one night in Moni, and leave after seeing the Kelimutu Lakes for sunrise. But it’s best to spend an extra night here to explore the village.

To get to Moni, you’ll first take a bus to Ende, which is two hours away. From here, you need to hop on another bus or bemo and head to Moni. When you arrive, rent a scooter and go exploring!

Flores island backpacking bucketlist

Ende or Moni?

Ende is one of the bigger cities you’ll pass on your Flores road trip. It’s the closest big city to Kelimutu Lakes and has an airport that offers daily flights to Bali.

There’s not much to do or see in Ende, so if you’re considering spending the night here or in Moni (which is a small village at the base of Kelimutu National Park), pick Moni instead!

Things to do in Moni

  • Hike to the summit of Mount Kelimutu: Allow for 2 hours to explore Kelimutu National Park. Most people choose to hike to the summit for sunrise, but optimal conditions are not guaranteed!
  • Relax in the Moni hot springs: Unfortunately, these are nothing compared to the Bajawa hot springs, but they are worth a visit if you have time.

Where to stay in Moni

The Geckos Homestay: The Geckos Homestay is a short drive from Kelimutu National Park. The newly built bungalows offer beautiful garden views, and a hearty breakfast is included in the price.

tour flores indonesia

Day 12 Flores itinerary: Maumere

Maumere is the city furthest east of the island and is most likely to be the first or last stop on your Flores Indonesia itinerary.

Most travelers only spend a night here, where they meet up with their private driver and then continue to their next destination.

Maumere was not a stop on my Flores Island tour. Instead, I went back to Ende after visiting the Kelimutu Lakes, and flew out of Flores Island from there.

There is also an airport in Maumere, so you can book a flight from either here or Ende.

Why Maumere wasn’t part of my Flores itinerary

As with Ruteng, I’d heard that Maumere doesn’t have any remarkable attractions that make it a must-see. On top of this, I’d already included Riung in my Flores itinerary, so my days were limited.

There are traditional villages to explore in Maumere, or you can go island hopping nearby. I’d already done both of these activities in the previous days so I was happy to give Maumere a skip.

The only thing I wanted to see in Maumere was Koka Beach, but it’s actually a 90-minute drive from Maumere, and because I was using public transportation, it seemed to be quite the mission to reach.

Tips to plan your Flores itinerary

How to plan your Flores overland itinerary

Flores in Indonesia, is a much bigger island than you may expect. Spanning over 13 000 km square, traveling overland is not as quick and easy as you may hope it to be.

There are various ways that you can plan your Flores overland tour depending on your travel preferences, budget, and time.

READ MORE: THE ULTIMATE 3 WEEK INDONESIA ITINERARY

Hire a private driver

A popular way of traveling around the island of Flores is to hire a private vehicle and driver for the duration of your overland tour. This allows you to create your own itinerary and customize it as you see fit.

This is also the best option if you have limited time or travel in a group (or with children).

A private vehicle and driver costs 700 000 IDR-900 000 IDR ($50-$65) per day which includes fuel and the drivers’ accommodation and meals.

Rent a motorbike and do a Flores overland tour

Scooter missions are the best way to travel Flores. But, whilst this is the fun, more adventurous option, there is one downside: You’ll need to get your bike back to your original starting point.

So, if you begin your Flores itinerary in Labuan Bajo and go overland by motorbike to Ende or Maumere, you’ll need to go back the same route to return the bike to Labuan Bajo.

This will also add an extra 2 days of travel to your itinerary for Flores, which is not ideal!

How to travel Flores Indonesia

Use public transport

There is a great public transportation network on Flores Island, and buses leave at 08:00 daily to all destinations on the island.

Your homestay owner will give you more details of the schedules and locations of where to find the bus, and if you’re lucky, they may even arrange a pickup from your guesthouse.

Another easy way to get around is to catch a bemo, which is a small minibus taxi.

Public buses and bemos cost between 40 000 IDR and 100 000 IDR ($3-$7), depending on the length of the journey.

tour flores indonesia

Negatives of public transport

On the downside, public transport is the slowest way to travel across Flores. This is because these buses only leave when they’re full, and the drivers often make detours to drop locals off in the nearby villages.

This means of transportation is also not for the faint-hearted! Expect no aircon, countless stops, chickens and other animals on the bus, and passengers who smoke like chimneys. Not to mention the kids hanging out of doors and sitting on the roof, the actual river crossings, and the countless mechanical issues.

But with a bit of patience, you’ll get through it, and these moments will hold some of your fondest memories of your Flores itinerary!

Once you’ve reached your destination, you can easily rent a bike to explore the area before you head off to your next stop. Expect to pay 60 000 IDR – 80 000 IDR ($4-$6) to rent a bike for the day.

You can also hire a motorbike and driver for the day if you’re not comfortable going on your own. This will set you back around 150 000 IDR ($10).

Backpacking Flores Island using public transport only

Things to know before backpacking Flores

  • You need to pack lightly when backpacking Flores. But you must also bring trainers or hiking boots and a warm top. Be sure to follow this guide when packing for Indonesia.
  • Don’t pre-book accommodation unless you are traveling in high season. Your Flores backpacking schedule may change depending on the people you meet.
  • Budget advice: If you’re backpacking Flores, using public transport, staying in local homestays, and eating local food, you need between $20-$30 per day to travel the island.
  • Internet and cell reception are widely available throughout Flores Island, but it’s best to get a local sim (Telkomsel) as most homestays do not have WiFi.
  • Unfortunately, you cannot surf in Flores, Indonesia, as there is no swell. Head to Sumba or Lakey Peak in Sumbawa after your Flores trip if you’re looking for great surf.

Best time to visit Flores Indonesia

When planning your Flores overland tour, your trip should coincide with the dry season (May to September). The weather is cool and dry during this time, and you’ll be able to explore without worrying about the rain.

Flores Indonesia itinerary

Is Flores Indonesia worth visiting

Yes! Visiting Flores was one of the highlights of my Indonesia backpacking trip.

There’s just enough tourist infrastructure in place to make it easy to travel overland, yet the island is also remote enough not to be overcrowded and touristy.

This is awesome! I just got back from Labuan Bajo yesterday and now I’m wishing I stayed longer to explore more of Flores. That settles it, I must go back!

Ah no! At least you got to explore the Komodo Islands and you can visit the rest of the island on your next trip. Happy travels!

Wow! What a comprehensive guide on Flores. I’d love to visit Indonesia and will absolutely want time include Flores in my itinerary. I’d love to go snorkeling there 😊

Thanks Jyoti! The snorkeling off the coast of Flores is world class.

I’m considering a trip to Indonesia next summer and I had never heard of Flores! I love learning about parts outside of big tourist locations. Thank you!

Definitely include Flores on your Indonesia itinerary. It’s my favorite island and if you love adventure, you’ll love Flores!

The Kelimutu lakes… wow! This is a great itinerary, nice to see lots to do and so many different places to see. I’m a big public transport fan when I travel too. If it takes a little longer that’s usually ok unless I have a time crunch for something I might have booked

Hi Emma! Aren’t they gorgeous. Flores is a backpacker’s paradise!

Two years I did this trip as well and got a one-way motorbike rental from Divers Paradise Komodo. Don’t know if they still do it, but that is a great way to see the island, especially because of the great roads.

Hi Steven, thanks for this. It would be amazing if there was a company that allowed for one-way rentals. I’ll look into your recommendation and update the post if it’s an option.

Hello Carryn.

I was wondering if you know how do i go about renting a car with a driver in Flores. I know you did backpacking but also mentioned a car hire. I figured you might have information. Thanks

Hi Irina, there are many drivers who advertise their services on the internet but I prefer getting personal recommendations from other travelers. You can find these on TripAdvisor or Facebook groups as people often share their feedback in those communities.

If you find a driver you recommend, please let me know so I can include it in the post for future readers.

Have a great time in Flores! Carryn

HI! May I know what time you took the flight out of Ende? From what I understand you didn’t spend the night in Ende, but you immediately took the outbound flight once you arrived from Moni, right? Thanks in advance.

Hey Sandro,

Yes, that’s correct. You don’t need to spend the night in Ende. I flew out of Ende at 14:40 with Garuda Indonesia but arrived at the airport around 10 am – it was a long wait! But there may be delays in getting from Moni to Ende so I recommend erring on the side of caution and flying out late morning/afternoon rather than early morning.

Have fun! Carryn

Before you plan a tour, you need to know how to get to Flores Island, Indonesia. It is important to know where you better start your trips on Flores island Indonesia. Of course, Flores has many things to offer and it is a world away from the bustle of Bali. And also, it takes just 70 minutes flight from Bali to get to Labuan Bajo and it’s for people looking for a different sort of holiday.  There, you will find deserted white-sand beaches though, as well as curious locals, surreal volcanic lakes and beautiful sunsets.

How to get to Flores Island

The best hub to get to flores is From Denpasar Bali, Surabaya and Jakarta. And the flight from Denpasar to Labuan Bajo, West Flores takes about 1 hour. Certainly, Labuan Bajo is a launching point to explore the island’s interior and visit the giant dragons on Komodo and Rinca Island. In recent years, Labuan Bajo gradually turned into a busy spot because of the divers and the increased number of Komodo visitors. Today, this town offers a wide range of tourist facilities.

There is also another Flight from Bali to Ende or Maumere, where you can land and start exploring the Island from the eastern part of Flores. Maumere offers the unique culture and this district is famous with its Weaving. There we can also go on snorkeling to see the beauty of underwater in Teluk Maumere. Normally the tour continue to Moni to see Kelimutu lake before heading to the west part of the island.

The most attractive sites during Flores Island tours

kelimutu lake flores indonesia

Kelimutu , roughly in the center of Flores, is a popular spot for tourists (well, popular for Flores that is). The three colorful crater lakes (blue, green and black) of this mystical volcano are best seen at sunrise or sunset. Certainly, it is practically empty here compared to the crowds on top of Mount Batur, Bali. Actualy Moni, the small tourist town below the volcano, is a relaxing place to hang out and meet other travelers. There are also some short hikes in the nearby countryside and a chance to see the waterfall.

Seventeen Islands Marine Park in Riung

The Seventeen Islands Marine Park in Riung are uninhabited islands and they are beautiful. The mangrove isle of Pulau Ontoloe hosts a massive colony of flying foxes and a few Komodo dragons. while,  Pulau Rutong and Pulau Temba boast picture-perfect white sand and turquoise waters. There’s great snorkeling near Pulau Tiga, Pulau Laingjawa and Pulau Bakau. But wherever you visit, you won’t be disappointed.

Bena Village Bajawa Flores Indonesia

bena village flores island

Bena village , in the megalithic Ngada, Flores Indonesia, precisely in the Village Tiwuriwu, District Aimere. And you can reach Bena village by using rental vehicles from Bajawa with the distance of about 19 km to the south Bajawa. From Labuan Bajo, Bajawa is about 7-8 hours by land transportation.

Location of Bena village is on a hilltop with a backdrop of Mount Inerie. It makes the atmosphere of the village more beautiful and exotic. Its presence at the bottom of the mountain is a hallmark of the old society who believe and revere the mountain as a place of the gods. And the people believe that the existence of god Bena Yeta that have place on Mount Inerie will protect their village.

Ruteng Flores Indonesia

ruteng flores island indonesia

Ruteng , a cool city in the highlands of Flores, is the capital of Manggarai district. This small town is attached to the gentle slopes of the northern side of the green mountain range of Mandusawu, at an altitude of 1,200 masl. The temperature in this city of 90,000 inhabitants ranges from 13 ° C – 25 ° C with humidity levels reaching 90%. Apart from the very cold temperatures, Ruteng is a city of rain with a fairly high intensity of 3,340 mm / year.

And Ruteng itself is surrounded by various tourist destinations that must be visited. One of which is the ancient cave of Liang Bua, where fossils of Homo floresiensis or better known as Hobbits from Flores were found. Liang Bua is 30 km from the town of Ruteng and takes 30 minutes.

Wae Rebo Village Flores Indonesia

wae rebo village flores indonesia

Wae Rebo is a beautiful and amazing village. And it is covered by a thin mist throughout the township makes Wae Rebo deserves the epithet ‘village above the clouds’. Geographically, the village is situated above an altitude of 1,200 meters above sea level (m asl).

Wae Rebo is part of the Village Satar Lenda, District Satarmese, West Manggarai regency, Flores. And it is about 2.5 hour driving from Labuan Bajo to the trekking point. The Walking will start from the premises Denge ± 9 km distance which normally takes 2-4 hours, highly dependent on physical condition of each visitor.

Labuan Bajo, Flores Indonesia

Labuan Bajo is a busy, rough tourist town that looks like it belongs in Bali. And it is on the western tip of Flores Island Indonesia. You will pass through it on the way to Komodo National Park, which is an absolute must-see, even if you aren’t planning on exploring the rest of Flores. Divers flock there for the top-class underwater action but there’s plenty around to keep non-divers happy. You can go on a one-night boat tour around Komodo National Park and see lots of Komodo dragons on Rinca Island but make sure not to get too close. The guides tell you to keep your distance but not everyone listens.

Then, you can go to the “pink beach”, a popular snorkeling spot. The reef, located just off the beach (which is actually pink), is home to hundreds of colorful fish of all shapes and sizes. As the day drew to a close, you can see dolphins jumping from the ocean as the sun going down.

A Flores Komodo Tour to the Unspoilt Heaven

"Flores" means "flower" in Portuguese, a name given by its 16th-century colonists as they found flowering Flame Tree on the island. Well, the name suits very well with the blooming beauty of Flores we have known today.

Komodo Island tours from Bali are very easy to organise, only 1 hour and a half flight from the airport of Denpasar and you will arrive in  Labuan Bajo , a small port town and launching point to  Rinca Island ,  Komodo Island  and other nearby islands. Almost every trade and commerce take place here, including a range of accommodations, shops, and western restaurants, leaving the rest of the island living harmoniously with nature. No traffic jam and rush hours to hold you stuck in the streets, not many shoulders to bump in the beach, and it almost feels like the whole island is yours. You can also enjoy the area with a Labuan Bajo trip to discover the hidden canyons and waterfalls near by. A perfect first day is paradise!

Flores Island redefines the means of isolation. With a neatly-arranged  Komodo tour package , it’s easy to dwell in an illusion of wandering in a lost paradise under the dome of the clear blue sky, between the vast hills, and among the quiet pristine beaches bordering the Flores Ocean in an impressive gradient of blue.

Raw & Wonderful Flores

The rawness nature and centuries-old cultural heritage are what awaits you in Flores. As soon as our Komodo trip package  hits the road, you will be surrounded by dramatic green mountains, the sun unveils its lush jungle, it almost feels unreal. A while after crossing flowing green, you will feel like being transported into Africa with vast savannah around. Sometimes, you may ask yourself, “am I still in Indonesia?”

In the center of the island, the cloud-ringed  Kelimutu Mountain  loomed from afar, its top hold the striking three-colored lake. As if it’s not magical enough, the colors of the lakes are known to change almost whimsically, ranging from shades of green, blue, white, to red, black, and brown. Crystal clear water runs from the mountain into every rivers, waterfalls, and cave lake to end in the ocean without losing its clarity.

The raw beauty of Flores doesn’t stop here; it extends into small neighbor islands and Komodo tour package will take you sailing from island to island to discover them all.  Kelor Island  will take your breath away with its two soft sandy beaches and panoramic view to Flores, Rinca and other islands around. The Pirate Bay or  Gili Lawa Darat  island offers a breathtaking view and incredible water activities with a chance to see a humpback or blue whale. And wait until you get into  Padar Island , where three bays of curved beaches pushed from both sides of green bumpy hills. At your left, blushed pink beach and black beach sits stunningly side by side. On your left is pristine white beach, and all are calling you to climb down to the coast. A visual feast by nature, feels so surreal it’s almost like waking up in Neverland.

Komodo Island Trip: Meet the Komodo Dragons

The dragon lives beyond the legend. They might not have a pair of broad wings to roam in the vast sky or breathe fire. Instead, they creep on the crisp land with their massive, scaly body, and armored with razor sharp teeth and venomous saliva. They are famous by the name “Ora”, means “land crocodile”, among the locals. And yes, though they can’t fly, these giant beast are gifted with swimming prowess.

Growing to 8 - 10 feet (3 meters) in length, seeing this giant lizard is truly one kind of experience. Seeing them sitting lazily under the sun is enough to make your heart beat ten times faster, but if you are lucky, you might see them feed on deer or piglet in the morning. Living in Komodo island, Rinca, and Padar, this terrifying dragon offers a breathtaking trip which requires well-grounded guide from rangers to keep you safe. A Komodo island tour can take up into the trek, as the Komodo National Park itself consists of the main island of Komodo, Rinca, and Padar. Komodo island tour price itself can vary depending on the itineraries you take, but each offers gratifying experience.

Being one of the New Seven Wonder of Nature and Indonesia’s national animal, Komodo dragon is what make Flores gain its initial popularity. They even say that you’ve never really landed on Flores until you see these endangered species by your own eyes, so a trip to Komodo Island really is a must for every traveler’s bucket list. Take a Komodo Island trip to the only place in the world where you can see Komodo dragons in the wild

Even if the island of Flores is predominantly Catholic, there are well-preserved traditional villages, especially in the interior of the island, where megalithic cultures are still alive today. These villages are isolated nestled between two volcanoes Gunung Inerie and Gunung Deru. They have a particular form of vernacular architecture with shrines for male and female ancestors (Ngadhu and Bhaga) in the center of these villages. Animistic rituals and ancestor worship characterize daily life to this day.

The villages of Bena and Luba are easily visited with an overnight stay in Bajawa. Visiting other more isolated Ngada villages like Desa Gurusina, Desa Belaraghi, Desa Tololela involves trekking from/to Bajawa.

Flores, the island given a pretty but incongruous Portuguese name by its 16th-century colonists, has become Indonesia’s Next Big Thing. The serpentine, 670km Trans-Flores Hwy runs the length of the island, skirting knife-edge ridges, brushing by paddy-fringed villages and opening up dozens of areas few tourists explore.

Labuan Bajo in Flores, Indonesia

Flores Travel Guide: Exploring the Home of the Dragon

' src=

Flores is one of my favorite travel destinations in Indonesia. The first time I flew into Labuan Bajo I was struck by the beautiful landscape. The hills surrounding the town are a rich emerald green and the ocean a cool turquoise. It was the start of my love affair with the island (and I keep coming back).

You can find dozens of articles about Flores on Discover Your Indonesia. To organize my thoughts and help you plan your trip to Flores Indonesia we created this guide to Flores. It covers all the important things you need to know for your trip.

We’ve broken the guide down into different sections. You can use the shortcuts below to jump to the bit you need.

Introduction to Flores

Flying to flores, boat to flores, exploring flores, transport in flores, accommodation in flores.

Most books on Flores start with the arrival of the Portuguese. Of course you could start a lot earlier, but… In 1511 Antonio de Abreu passed Flores while on an expedition to the Sunda Islands. He called the island ‘flowers’ … I hope he put more thought into naming his children.

Regardless of how the island got its name, there are plenty of reasons to visit . Top of the list are the Komodo Islands, which offer amazing diving opportunities, beautiful viewpoints and the Komodo Dragons (though I wish Indonesia had a more friendly national mascot, like a Panda for example). Other highlights of the island include the three coloured lakes of Kelimutu and the enchanting village of Wae Rebo (you’ll probably need a guide to visit the village ).

It used to be that getting to Flores was a real pain. Despite the fact that the island had three main airports (Labuan Bajo, Ende and Maumere), there weren’t many flights going to the island, but you could expect a lot of delays. That’s changing…

Labuan Bajo has a new shiny international airport with a runway big enough to cater for mid sized aircraft like the Boeing 727. The airport can now handle international routes (it’s starting with Kuala Lumpur and Singapore) as well as more domestic routes (Garuda International operates schedule flights from Jakarta). Yay! You can fly into Flores on low cost carriers Sriwijaya Airways, Wings Air and Lion Air. Most of these flights go from Bali, but there are also services from Timor.

If you don’t want to fly you can always take a boat. There are ferry services linking Flores with Sepe in Sumbawa and Tambolaka in Sumba. Pelni, the Indonesian National Ferry Company , manages the service. I’d only recommend this option if you are planning a massive overland trip across Indonesia.

The more popular route with tourists is the Lombok to Flores cruise . These cruises take between 2-3 days. You can stop off at tourist sites along the way, do some diving, watch the beaches pass by and generally relax onboard the ships. It’s an interesting way to travel and I’d recommend it if you have the time.

Flores is a difficult island to travel around. As soon as you leave the coast you enter the highlands. There are endless hills, deep valleys and rocky cliff faces. It’s a beautiful landscape, but difficult to navigate. We’ll come back to the interior in a second, because most people are interested in the coast…

Tourism in Flores is focused around the coastal towns of Labuan Bajo, Ende and Maumere. Of the three towns Labuan Bajo is the most popular. There are lots of nice restaurants, good hotels and the Komodo National Park is just a short boat ride away. If you’re a tourist you’ll probably visit Ende after Labuan Bajo. The city is 50 km away from Kelimutu where you can see the three colored lakes. There’s a chance you’ll visit Maumere though as it’s the bigger city and there are more flights to the airport.

After the three principle cities in Flores come the towns of Riung, Ruteng, Bajawa and Moni. These are all on the interior and are linked together by the Trans Flores Highway that crosses the island. You can find more information about each of the towns and what you can do around them below (it’s a work in progress).

Labuan Bajo

Things to Do in Labuan Bajo : Guide to the best things to do around Labuan Bajo.

Where to Stay in Labuan Bajo : Our guide to the best hotels to stay in Labuan Bajo for every budget.

Getting around Flores is quite difficult. The distances are large (getting between Ruteng to Bajawa for instance can be a one day drive) and there is limited public transport. If you do want to explore Flores by road I’d recommend arranging an overland tour for 4-5 days. This is enough time to go from Ende to Labuan Bajo and hit the main tourist spots.

It is possible to travel between towns in the interior by public transport, but unless you are on a really tight budget I wouldn’t bother. Instead stick around Labuan Bajo and maybe hit Wae Rebo, or fly to Ende to visit Kelimutu and then leave Flores. If you do choose to go overland then avoid travelling long distances at night if at all possible.

Hotel accommodation in Flores is really variable. The coastal town of Labuan Bajo is the most developed with hotels to fit every budget. In Maumere and Ende hotel options are more limited, but you can still find some really nice places to stay.

Following the Trans-Flores Highway you pass the towns of Riung , Ruteng, Bajawa and Moni, the main tourism spots for overland tours. Accommodation is really focused on backpackers and budget travellers. You won’t find real mid-range or any luxury accommodation.

Final Thoughts

Most people who visit Flores will come to visit the Komodo National Park and then leave. I’ve tried to go beyond Labuan Bajo in the is guide and cover some of the essential things you need to know if you’re planning to really explore Flores, Indonesia. I know with the speed of development things will be changing quickly and I plan to keep this article updated. If you have any comments or feedback about the article or want some more information leave your comments below and I’ll do my best to answer them.

The Flores Itinerary on a Map & Where is Flores Indonesia?

Flores Island is located in the volcanic belt that stretches from Sumatra to Java, and Bali until the Banda sea. It is part of what is known as East Nusa Tenggara.  Flores is easy to reach from Bali or Java in Indonesia by plane. See the map below to view exactly where is Flores Indonesia.

Our itinerary for Flores in Indonesia on the map. You can continue all the way to Maumere to make the itinerary slow-paced or longer if you wish.

Flores Itinerary

Day 1 – Day 3 Labuan Bajo & Komodo National Park

Explore Komodo National Park and Spot the Legendary Komodo Dragons

One of the top draws to the island of Flores is a visit to Komodo National Park. Home to some of the world’s most unique wildlife, including Komodo dragons, you can view these enormous creatures in their natural habitat whilst taking in the stunning tropical surroundings.

The view of Padar Island in Komodo National Park

Your Komodo Island tour can be organised from Labuan Bajo or pre-book your trip online.

We recommend spending the 2 days in the park on an overnight boat trip. This will allow you to see the best of the park.

Island Flores in Indonesia Itinerary for Flores Komodo Island

Essentially, you will stay 1 night in Labuan Bajo, then do an overnight trip to Komodo (1 night) and 1 night back in Labuan Bajo after it.

If you choose to go with the one-day tour to Komodo Island instead of the overnight trip , you can move on to Ruteng earlier and use the extra night in Kalimutu.

We stayed at Danke Lo dge, located outside of the main town, but the staff was super helpful and happy to drive us and pick us up at any time (complimentary service). We booked our overnight trip to Komodo and returned to sleep here before heading off to Ruteng the following morning.

Labuan Bajo is a nice little town with a few great places for coffee and food.

We booked our bus with Gunung Mas Bus Company, which operates modern medium-sized buses with air-conditioning. They also pick you up at your hotel in Labuan Bajo, so it’s very convenient.

We booked the 8 a.m. bus to Ruteng; the cost was 120,000 IDR (8 USD) per person, and the journey time was 4 hours. They dropped us at our guesthouse.

Of course, there are cheaper ways to travel via public transport in Flores, such as bemo (a little minibus, quite squashy when they fill up) or shared cars. We highly recommend paying that little bit extra to travel with Gunung Mas; it was very comfortable, not to mention reliable vehicles, too.

Island Flores in Indonesia Itinerary for Flores Labuan Baja

Day 4 Ruteng

Visit Ruteng, the Heart of Flores’ Ancient Culture in its Traditional Villages and Spider Web Rice Fields

Visit the small mountain town of Ruteng, located in the central part of Flores. If you wish to visit one of the most famous traditional villages, Wae Rebo, you can do so from here on your free day or pre-book it from Labuan Bajo as an overnight tour.

Wae Rebo can be visited for a day; there is a fee for lunch or an overnight stay, which costs 325,000 IDR per person for sleep and meals. Please note you will sleep in one big hut with very basic facilities: no electricity or internet.

If you go to Wae Rebo and stay overnight, you must add the extra night to this itinerary. Getting here independently on public transport is complex, and it would essentially take 3 days, so it is best to arrange transport from Labuan Bajo and then get a drop-off at Bajawa (it should cost around 2,500,000 IDR from Labuan Bajo)

Island Flores in Indonesia Itinerary for Flores Wae Rebo

You can visit other traditional villages near Ruteng; the closest one in Ruteng is Ruteng Puu Traditional Village (65,000 IDR pp entry fee as of Feb 2023). It’s an easy ride on a motorbike to reach Ruteng Puu Traditional Village.

We visited the local market; seeing the Spider Web Rice Fields was highlighted. We rented a motorbike (100,000 IDR) for the day from our guesthouse.

It takes about 30 minutes to get to the Spider Web Rice Fields, and you can either stop at the viewpoint, the location is here on Google Maps, and you pay a small fee. Or, like us, you could ride a little further and stop at this little cafe overlooking the rice paddies for coffee or Bakso soup for lunch.

Lunch at Spider Web Rice Fields Island Flores in Indonesia

A great place to eat in Ruteng is the Chacha guesthouse next to the bus station. We came to book our bus to Bajawa at the Gunung Mas bus station/ticket office and had a delicious lunch at Chacha.

The other great travellers’ meeting point is Kopi Mane in town. Great coffee and good food.

Day 5 – 6 Bajawa

Discover the stunning beauty of Bajawa from traditional villages, hot springs, and views of nearby volcanoes

No other attraction will give you a better insight into the traditional culture of Bajawa than the Bena Traditional Village. Walk around this ancient village and admire the traditional houses built with thatched roofs, stone foundations, and ancient burials.

Bena Traditional Village Flores in Indonesia

You can hire a motorcycle or a driver with a car to get here. It will take about 30 minutes to get here, with amazing views of the nearby volcanoes. The roads to Bena Village are in great condition, and we found the motorcycle ride here relatively easy.

The entrance was 25,000 IDR per person, and we asked one of the young boys to show us around the village as he spoke English.

Stunning views of the volcano near Bajawa

We then continued to the Manulalu Lookout, where you can enjoy coffee or lunch. The restaurant here provides panoramic views of the natural beauty below, from lush tropical forests to the smell of nearby volcanic hot springs.

You can then visit the Malanage hot springs. The thermal water flow bubbles up from the ground at 43°C and is naturally stimulating – it’s also believed to have numerous health benefits.

Another great place to stop is the Wolobobo Viewpoint.

This viewpoint offers 360-degree views of the hills, mountains, and valleys that make up Bajawa’s beautiful scenery. On clear days, you can even catch a glimpse of Inerie Mountain!

We stayed at Cinnamon Guesthouse in Bajawa and enjoyed the food at Maibeth Restaurant, conveniently located just across the road to the left. The owner of the guesthouse, Johannes, helped us book the early bus to Moni the following morning at 6.30 a.m.

It was not the Gunung Mas bus but a standard small bus, so there was no AC, and it stopped along the way a lot, but it got us to Moni in 6.5 hours. The price for this journey was 120,000 IDR per person.

Day 7 Moni & Kelimutu

Travel to Kelimutu and See its Three Coloured Lakes

Also known as the ‘Three Colors Lakes of Mt. Kelimutu’, these three lakes are situated at the summit of this majestic mountain.

The view is beyond beautiful, and you’ll be awe-struck by the dramatic landscape before you, especially when the first morning rays hit the blue, turquoise, and brown lakes!

To get to Kelimutu Lakes, you will need to first get to the town of Moni. The town caters to tourists and has a few guesthouses/hotels.

We stayed at Joseph Lodge , which was lovely but about a 10-15 minute walk into town. Mahoni Lodge or the Moon Cafe are the best places to eat.

We enjoyed a fantastic tofu curry with rice at Moon Cafe for 35,000 IDR. The portion was very generous, and it was one of the best meals we ate whilst travelling in Flores.

Our place in Mini - Joseph Lodge

How to get to the Kalimutu Lakes:

Most visitors tend to do the sunrise at Kalimutu Lakes, which means getting up at 4-4.30 am to drive up to the top (about 30 30-minute drive). You will have to pay the entrance fee (150,000 IDR pp) and walk another 20-30 minutes. Here you wait for sunrise.

Of course, you may want to opt out to get there a little bit later, just after 7-8 am to still enjoy the views before the day’s heat.

Kelimutu Lakes in Flores

How much does it cost to get to Kelimutu:

You can hire a motorcycle for 100,000 IDR or a motorcycle with a driver for 125,000 IDR. Or if it is 2 or 3 of you, a driver with a car for about 300,000 – 350,000 IDR roundtrip per car.

Then, it is time to return to Ende for your flight out. We recommend flagging down a shared car, bus, or minivan passing by that is heading toward Ende. A seat in a shared car from Moni is approx 50,000 IDR per person, and the journey time is roughly 1.5 – 2 hours.

Be prepared for a stunning drive to Ende, with towering waterfalls and lush green rainforests everywhere!

The town Ende in Flores

Alternatively, if you have an extra 3 days, we recommend staying an extra night in Moni to enjoy the beautiful surroundings and continue onto Maumere for a day on the beach. The journey time is 3.5 hours to Maumere from Moni.

We became aware of Flores Active Tours through a recommendation, which in hindsight was one of the best decisions we ever made.

Frankie went to extraordinary lengths even before the trip and organised a lot for us. Whether it was the transfers and boat tickets to Gili and back, transfers to our hotels or guided tours with him directly. Thanks to Frankie, we got to know some of the most beautiful sides of Bali and fell in love straight away.

Whether it was funny moments with durian fruits tied under the car, lots of information about history and culture – we always felt that we were in good hands thanks to his very friendly manner.

We will definitely be back and are really looking forward to it. 🙂

Kind regards Louisa & Flo

Introduction

Welcome to Flores Island, a hidden gem in Indonesia that offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and thrilling adventures. Located in the East Nusa Tenggara province, Flores Island is a destination that will leave you enchanted with its picturesque landscapes, pristine beaches, lush forests, and vibrant local culture.

Despite being lesser-known compared to its famous neighbor Bali, Flores Island is a paradise waiting to be explored. Whether you are an adventure seeker, a nature lover, or a culture enthusiast, this island has something for everyone.

One of the main highlights of Flores Island is its unique geological landscape, shaped by volcanic activity over millions of years. Getting to Flores Island

Although Flores Island may seem remote, it is easily accessible through various transportation options. The most convenient and popular way to reach Flores is by air. Labuan Bajo, the main town in Flores, has an airport with domestic connections to major Indonesian cities like Bali, Jakarta, and Surabaya.

Several airlines operate regular flights to Labuan Bajo, and the journey offers breathtaking aerial views of the island. Once you arrive at Labuan Bajo Airport, you can easily hire a taxi or take a local minibus to reach your desired destination.

If you prefer a more adventurous and scenic route, you can also choose to travel to Flores by sea. Pelni, the national shipping company, operates regular ferry services that connect Flores to other Indonesian islands like Bali, Lombok, and Sulawesi. The ferry journey takes longer compared to air travel but provides a unique experience and the opportunity to enjoy the stunning coastal views.

For those who are already in Bali, there is an alternative option of taking a boat or a speedboat from Bali to Labuan Bajo. This option is popular among backpackers and adventure-seekers who want to explore Flores Island from a different perspective.

Once you have arrived in Labuan Bajo, you can choose to explore Flores Island by road. There are rental car services available in Labuan Bajo, and you can either drive yourself or hire a driver to take you around the island. Public transportation in Flores is limited, so renting a car or motorbike gives you more flexibility to visit various attractions at your own pace.

Alternatively, you can also join organized tours or hire local guides to explore Flores Island. This is particularly recommended if you plan to visit more remote areas or embark on activities like hiking or diving, as the local guides can provide valuable insights and ensure your safety.

Before visiting Flores, make sure to check for any visa requirements and ensure that you have a valid passport. Most nationalities can enter Indonesia with a visa-free entry for a limited period, but it’s always best to verify the latest visa regulations before your trip.

Getting to Flores Island may require some planning, but the journey is part of the adventure. Whether you choose to reach the island by air or sea, you will be rewarded with stunning natural beauty and unique cultural experiences that make Flores a truly special destination.

Best Time to Visit

Flores Island experiences a tropical climate, characterized by two distinct seasons – the dry season and the wet season. The best time to visit Flores and make the most of your trip depends on your preferences and the activities you plan to engage in.

The dry season in Flores runs from May to September, offering sunny days, lower humidity, and calm seas. This period is ideal for diving, snorkeling, and outdoor activities, as the water visibility is excellent, and the weather is generally pleasant. The dry season is also the peak tourist season, so do expect larger crowds and higher prices during this time.

Another great time to visit Flores is during the shoulder seasons, which fall between October and November, as well as February and April. These periods offer a good balance between favorable weather, fewer tourists, and more affordable prices. You can still enjoy the water activities and explore the stunning landscapes while avoiding the peak season crowds.

The wet season in Flores occurs from December to January, with occasional rainfall and higher humidity. While the wet season may deter some travelers, it has its own unique charm. The landscapes come alive with lush greenery, and the waterfalls are at their most spectacular. This season is perfect for nature enthusiasts and those looking for a more tranquil experience away from the crowds.

It’s important to note that weather patterns can vary, and unexpected rain showers can occur even during the dry season. It’s always a good idea to pack a lightweight rain jacket and be prepared for sudden changes in weather.

One key factor to consider when planning your visit to Flores is the timing of special events and local festivals. Flores is known for its vibrant cultural celebrations, such as the Reba Festival in Manggarai, which showcases traditional dances and horse racing. Attending these festivals provides a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture and witness age-old traditions.

Ultimately, the best time to visit Flores Island depends on your personal preferences and the activities you wish to engage in. Labuan Bajo

Labuan Bajo, Indonesia

There, you’ll find most of the best things to do in Flores Indonesia.

If you want to treat yourself, book a stay on a private island nearby . The all-inclusive Angel Island Eco Resort , located on Bidadari Island, is one of the top-rated resorts in Flores and will make an incredible getaway.

  • Spending some time at the beach on Pantai Segang

Sano Nggoang Lake

View this post on Instagram A post shared by NM Bondan (@nm_bondan)

Sano Nggoang Lake is a stunning volcanic lake known for its scenic beauty, walking trails, and hot springs. It’s the largest one in the region and probably the deepest one in the world.

There you can stroll around the lake, hiking to viewpoints through the forest, trying to spot birds. There are areas where you swim as well.

You could take a day trip to Sano Nggoang Lake from Labuan Bajo, but if you have more time you could spend a night nearby . You can arrange for a homestay at one of the villages that border the lake.

Wae Rebo Village

Wae Rebo village, Flores

Reachable through a 10-km hike through a lush forest, Wae Rebo is a traditional and ancestral village of the Manggarai people. The village features traditional 5-tiered, cone-shaped thatched huts.

The hike in itself is a must-do. You’ll pass by waterfalls you can swim in, sweeping views, and might spot a couple of rare birds.

Once you reach the village, you’ll be welcome by a traditional welcome ceremony and witness the inhabitant’s daily life. Spend the night there and wake up early to admire the beautiful landscape at sunrise.

The easiest way to organize a visit to Wae Rebo would be to book a tour from Labuan Bajo . Some people do it without going through an agency but it’s far from being easy. You’ll need to get to Denge and hire a local guide there.

Note, that the hike there is not an easy one, you need to be fit or be prepared to suffer. Also know that if you decide to spend the night, it’s not going to be as comfortable as a hotel stay. As you can expect, everything is very basic, you won’t get a hot shower and a comfy mattress, not even a private room.

Recommended experience : Private tour to Waerebo Village with local guide from Labuan Bajo

The Cancar fields are an Instagram hot spot of sorts. These incredible paddy fields are designed in a spider web shape . It’s worth checking out if you happen to pass near them.

Each family in the village owns a part of the “spider web”, their share depending on their wealth.

Note that depending on the time of the year you visit, it might look completely different. Right before harvest, when the fields are green, is the best time to see them.

Liang Bua or Hobbit Cave

Hobbit Cave, Flores

In 2003, 18,000-year-old skeletons of small humanoids were found inside a cave near Rutang , uncovering the Homo Floresiensis, believed to have been around 3.2 ft high.

You can now visit the cave and see the remains inside the small museum that has been built next to the cave.

Ngada Village, bajawa, Flores, Indonesia

Bajawa is a must-see while in Flores. The area is known for the many Ngada traditional villages scattered around the district. Discovering this unique way of life and culture is an incredible experience. People there still lead really traditional life and it will feel like stepping into another world of time.

Many villages are easily accessible, you can just drive to them and stroll around the village. Some will require a guide and some hiking.

The most popular villages to visit are Bena, Luba, and Toto Lela. You can ask your hotel to provide a map of the villages or hire a local guide for the day.

You can also visit one of the hot springs like the Malanage Hot Springs and hike to Oji Waterfall.

Most accommodation options in Bajawa are guest houses. The Cinnamon Guest House is the best-rated one in town, everything is brand new, it’s well located, and they serve a good breakfast. If you want to splurge, check out  Manulalu Jungle .

Mount Inerie

Gunung Inerie, volcano, bajawa, flores, indonesia

If you’re in Bajawa, climbing mount Inerie can be a rewarding experience. The hike can be done in a day, but you’ll need to leave at dawn and hire a guide. You’ll also need a good fitness level.

The climb might be arduous but the views from the top are breathtaking. You can also start at 2 AM if you want to watch the sunrise from the summit.

17 Islands National Park

Riung 17 Islands National Park, Flores

For an off-the-beaten-path experience, plan an island hopping trip to the 17 Islands National Park . Most of the islands are uninhabited and few tourists make the trip there.

The marine park is ideal for snorkeling or diving , some islands offer incredible hiking and wildlife watching opportunities , while others feature pristine beaches.

The starting point to vising the park is in the small town of Riung, from which you can hire a boat to take you for a fun day on the water.

While in town, you can stay at the Riung Guesthouse and experience the warm Indonesian hospitality.

Kelimutu National Park

Kelimutu National Park - Flores - Indonesia

Kelimutu National Park , near Ende, is known for its three amazing color-changing volcanic lakes. The color of the lakes is just surreal, called the tricolored lakes, they are all made of different colors, and they change according to the season and to the minerals inside the water. They usually are different shades of turquoise and olive green, sometimes, one of them is red. The colors are so intense that the water looks super dense, more like paint than water.

Locals believe the lakes are sacred and magical , here the souls of the dead come. Young people’s souls go to the turquoise lake, old people to the brown/reddish one, and the souls of the wicked go to the darker lake.

The spectacular colors are due to the dissolving minerals , explaining why they can change colors. The rain also has an impact, it accelerates the process of dissolution. The craters around the lake look a bit like the moon, and the sunlight and clouds will create an amazing atmosphere.

The best time to visit the park is at dawn . Watching the misty sunrise coming over the volcano, slowly revealing the beauty of the lakes, is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The nearest town to stay in is Moni. Most people arrange for a driver around 4 AM to be at the top of Mount Kelimutu for sunrise . It takes around 20 minutes to hike from the parking lot to the top . You can then hike your way back through villages and paddy fields (ask your hotel for a map or download Maps.Me, the path is not on Google Maps).

Recommended accommodation : Joseph Guest House featuring river views, rooms with a private bathroom, and a nice restaurant.

woman weaving ikat, moni, flores, indonesia

Another incredible thing to do in Moni is to take a dip at night at the Kolorongo hot springs and gaze at the stars (don’t go alone),

If you are there on a Monday check out the local market and have some Moni Cake , a potato pie topped with cheese.

Coca-Beach-Flores-Indonesia

There are some amazing beaches around Paga. To the north, you’ll see impressive and  deserted black sand beaches . To the south, you can go to  the popular Koka beach  (or Coca). You’ll find some bungalows if you want to stay the night there and some beach huts where they sell drinks and simple food. The landscape is beautiful with cliffs and big rocks. The entrance fee is 20k.

Close to Koka beach is  Naga Beach , really nice for swimming, the sand is white, and it’s quieter.

Nuabari Village

Nuabari Village, Flores, Indonesia, megaliths 3

Nuabari Village  is home to some impressive  megalithic tombstones , it’s definitively off most tourists’ radar, and they’re missing something. The stones are scattered around the small village, located on a hill, bonus: you’ll get a splendid view from up there. The way up the village is also amazing; you can hike but also drive there. The village is not on any maps so you’ll have to ask the locals, once you’re on the right road it gets easier.

People there are trying to  preserve their traditions , and you’ll be able to see fresh graves among the old ones and also traditional houses. You’ll have to make a donation, the village’s chief will guide you around, bring a translator because he doesn’t speak English. At the end of the tour, you’ll be offered a cup of tea.

Sika and Lela villages

Portuguese Church, Sikka, Flores, Indonesia

Sika and Lela are charming  traditional villages , with nice scenery on the way there Take a look around and watch the amazing beaches and cute traditional houses. People are really welcoming, during the day, they are usually working so you won’t see a lot of villagers, especially in Lela.

In Sikka, there’s an impressive  old Portuguese church  you can visit; you’ll have to find someone to open it for you. At the entrance, many women will be waiting for you to sell their ikat, it’s pretty annoying. They will also offer to show you their weaving technique, decline unless you’re willing to pay for it, you will have other opportunities to see it in Flores and for free.

How to get to Flores Island

Airports and flights.

Maumere, Labuan Bajo, and Ende all have an airport with flights to most major destinations in Indonesia.

Ferries / Boats

Many people take a 4-day cruise from Lombok, island hopping along the way.

From Labuan Bajo, you can book a ferry/bus/ferry trip to Lombok, it will take you a full day.

You’ll also find ferries to Ende or Maumere from neighboring islands but most don’t run daily so check the schedule ahead.

Flores Itinerary

Planning your itinerary in Flores is pretty easy as the island is long and thin and there’s one main road going from west to east. Most of the top sights are either along it or not too far away.

Keep in mind the island is quite big and some places can be far apart.

The easiest itinerary would be to start in Maumere and end in Labuan Bajo or the other way around.

If you’re short on time visit Kelimutu Lake, Bajawa, and Komodo Island. If you have more time, visit some of the other places listed above, depending on what you want to see.

The Finest Flores, Indonesia Itinerary – From Labuan Bajo to Ende in 12 Days

Epic. Ultimate. Mammoth. These are just a few attempts to describe our Flores, Indonesia itinerary. Our comprehensive guide covers everything, from transport and accommodation to sights and practical tips

Saying Flores is magical is quite the understatement. This long, mountainous island has dragons on one side and crater lakes that change colours on the other. And between them, you’ll find some of the best snorkelling and diving on earth, age-old traditional villages, hot springs, volcanoes and some of the best coffee you’ll ever have. Our Flores, Indonesia itinerary shows you all the highlights (and a few secret spots) for your backpacking trip across the island.

Last July, we travelled across Flores, our seventh trip to Indonesia.

Yes, we love Indonesia.

Flores completely blew us away! It’s like the best of the entire country condensed into one island. We loved the adventure, and with some of the most incredible sights in Indonesia, it’s one epic travel experience we will never forget.

The usual backpacking route is the Trans-Flores Highway, between Labuan Bajo in the west and Maumere in the east. While Labuan Bajo is roughly 250 km from Maumere as the crow flies, the distance by road is just over 500 km. The Trans-Flores Highway is in good condition; however, going is slow due to the mountainous terrain – you’ll rarely see a stretch of road that’s straight or flat for more than 100 metres.

So don’t rush yourself. Ten days is the bare minimum you should plan for your Flores itinerary. Don’t believe anyone saying you can have a good time backpacking Flores in a week. We spent 12 days in Flores, travelling between Labuan Bajo and Ende (which is not even the end of the Trans Flores).

*Scuse us for annoyingly having to say Flores Indonesia itinerary, but there is also a Flores in Guatemala. If you’re dreaming of Mayan ruins, tortillas or learning Spanish, you’re in the wrong place 😝

Places Visited on our Flores, Indonesia Itinerary

Most stick to the popular Labuan Bajo-Ruteng-Bajawa-Kelimutu-Maumere route. For our Flores trip, we took a wonderful detour to Riung and the 17 Islands Marine Park and flew out from Ende as flights were much cheaper from there compared to Maumere. In hindsight, we should’ve added a few days and included Maumere.

Once we reached Moni, we felt a definite shift as Indonesia faded into Melanesia. It felt like we’d crossed a frontier to another time and place. With an extra few days, we’d include Maumere, Larantuka and Lewoleba to see unique cultures and landscapes of eastern Flores. This is definitely a reason to return to Flores – we have unfinished business.

Below is a brief overview of our Flores trip.

  • Labuan Bajo – Komodo dragons, island hopping, pink beaches, snorkelling and diving. It’s a bucket list destination for a reason!
  • Ruteng – More than just a stopover. The spider web rice fields and Hobbit Cave are worth checking out.
  • Bajawa – Hot springs, Ngada and Luba villages, and fantastic coffee.
  • Riung – Island hopping in the 17 Islands Marine Park.
  • Moni – The tri-coloured Kelimutu lakes

When is the Best Time to Travel Across Flores?

“ So when is the best time to backpack Flores?” you ask. Let me take out my crystal ball 😂

Backpacking and overland travel in Flores is possible year-round. The people living in Flores go about their lives happily just as they have for thousands of years, come rain or shine. However, be aware of the seasons and how they might affect your Flores trip.

Flores experiences a rainy season from November to March and a dry season from April to September. This weather pattern becomes more apparent as you move towards the east, with the rainy season being wetter and the dry season drier. The sea temperature remains warm throughout the year, making it perfect for swimming.

I have been to Alor, at the very eastern tip of Flores, in February and Labuan Bajo on another occasion, also in February. For this itinerary, we travelled across Flores at the end of July, so we can compare apples to apples here.

Rainy Season (November to March)

An island in Komodo National Park during the rainy season (February)

December to February is statistically the wettest, with rain expected every day. I remember Alor in the east for intense rainfall every day, less so in Labuan. Rain tends to come down in sudden downpours that last an hour or two before clearing up. It’s unusual to have rain lasting the entire day.

It is also the hottest time of the year, and dealing with the humidity can be difficult. It’s a bit of a sweat-fest to be honest.

Rain and wind often cause boats and ferry services to be cancelled or delayed, and many Komodo liveaboards don’t operate during the rainy season. While visibility is not as good for diving and snorkelling, we still had a fantastic time island-hopping Komodo in February.

The Komodo Islands were an emerald green in February and yellow during our last visit in July. We also think that the sunsets in Labuan Bajo were much prettier in February.

Dry Season (April-October)

Three men swimming in shallow , clear water with wooden tourist boat deeper in the water. Seen at Kelor Island near Labuan Bajo in July (dry season)

The dry season, which lasts from mid-April to mid-October, is widely considered to be the best time to travel to Flores. During our July visit, it was perfect. Labuan Bajo days were warm and pleasant, and we barely broke a sweat even when walking around. However, the mornings and evenings became chilly as we headed to Ruteng, Bajawa, and Moni in the highlands. Riung was nice and warm, much like Labuan Bajo.

Pack something warm for the mountains; you will need it. We did not, and the first thing we did in Ruteng was to go shopping for sweaters. Also book accommodation with hot water – you can thank us later.

Snorkelling in Komodo and the 17 Islands Marine Park was excellent, with excellent visibility.

Given a choice, we’ll join the internet choir and chime in: April to October is the best time to backpack Flores. But hey, sometimes you only have holiday in December or February – so come when you can. You won’t be disappointed.  If you’re travelling to Indonesia in December, January or February, the Banda Islands or North Sumatra will have much better weather than Flores.

Trans Flores Transportation Options

You have choices when it comes to how to travel Flores overland. Ask your guesthouse when you arrive to book onward transportation for you.

Gunung Mas : This is a comfortable, shared minibus service running the Trans Flores, with a maximum of six to eight individual seats. They offer door-to-door service, so it’s a convenient option. We took Gunung Mas from Labuan Bajo to Ruteng, and from Ruteng to Bajawa.

A photo of myself sitting comfortably in my seat on a Gunung Mas transport service. This photo was taken between Labuan Najo and Ruteng while backpacking across the Flores island in Indonesia

Shared car: A shared vehicle (typically a Toyota Avanza) is another comfortable way to travel in Flores. You pay for an individual seat in the car and also get the door-to-door service. We took a shared car from Bajawa to Riung and from Riung to Ende.

Private car with driver: This is an excellent option for families. We’ve seen several European families (mom, dad and children) travelling with a car and driver. You get to tailor your trip exactly how you want, and you can stop where and whenever you want.

This is also the most expensive, as you need to pay for the car, fuel, driver and the driver’s food and lodging.

We met a cool guy called Theo in Bajawa. He turned out to be a driver waiting for his family. He seemed like good guy, and if I were to be driven across a rugged island with dragons, volcanoes and tribals (Dramatic? Me?), I want it to be Theo from Flores Paradise Adventure. His WhatsApp is: (+62) 813 3742 6425

Public Bus or Bemo: Those who say there’s a blurred line between pleasure and pain will be over the moon when they see the public buses in Flores. The buses might be a bit better, but the bemos (shared minibuses with wooden benches facing inwards running set routes) are cool for the first 5 minutes only. Bemos blast anything from techno to Boyz2Men at a billion decibels and stop every hundred metres to pick up passengers – and there’s always space for more.

Seriously, the few dollars you’ll save are not worth it. You’ll spend double in therapy once the PTSD kicks in after your trip.

We took a bus from Ende to Moni, which was ok.

Scooter/Motorbike: Want something to tell the grandkids? Travelling across Flores by motorbike must be one EPIC adventure. This company offers one-way scooter rentals between Labuan Bajo and Maumere—book well in advance.

Get a real motorbike license and medical insurance if you’re serious about this. Also, this is best done in the dry season.

Backpacking Flores: A Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary

Okay, now that you know when and how to travel across Flores, it’s time to get this show on the road.

I kept it short and to the point but included links to in-depth guides with more information and photos for each destination. If not, this post would end up being longer the Trans-Flores Highway itself 😂

Day 0: Arrive Labuan Bajo

Jin having waffles and fruit for breakfast while enjoying a panoramic view over Labuan Bajo harbour and Komodo national Park

Most visitors arrive at Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo. Despite being a small airport, it is modern and well-maintained. You won’t find any taxis outside the terminal, but there is a pre-paid taxi booth inside the building.

It’s a good idea to arrange an airport pickup with your hotel in advance. This is what we did, and we were met by La Cecile upon arrival. Once you have checked in, we recommend you rent a scooter to get around Labuan Bajo. You can ask your accommodation about rentals.

However, if you are visiting in July or August, it is best to reserve a bike a few days before your arrival. Our hotel was all out of scooters during our stay, and so were at least the other three places we contacted. After several attempts, we got lucky at Made Perama (WhatsApp +62 821 4444 5150).

We paid 75K IDR per day and a one-time fee of 30K IDR for delivery and pick-up of the scooter at our hotel. Once you have your own transportation, you can relax by the pool or go explore Labuan Bajo.

Even if you’re not staying at La Cecile, come for a sunset drink. The restaurant with live music has the best sunset view in Labuan Bajo.

Where to Stay: The lovely La Cecile sits on the highest point in Labuan Bajo, with incredible views, good food and a swimming pool. This was our second time staying at La Lecile, and I suspect it has something to do with why we love Labuan Bajo so much.

Tell me more: The Labuan Bajo Lowdown

Day 1: Full Day in Labuan Bajo

The first thing on today’s agenda is to organize your trip to Komodo for tomorrow or the coming days. You can choose from various trips that suit your taste, budget and duration, including multi-day liveaboards, speed boat day trips and slow wooden boats. Most tour agencies are located on Jalan Sakoerna Hatta (the street running past the Starbucks along the waterfront), making it the best place to shop for a Komodo trip.

While most agencies may ask for the same price for the same type of tour, there is some room for haggling. Before making a decision, ensure you know what’s included, the number of passengers, and your destination.

If you are looking for a private boat for an overnight trip (like us) and don’t have enough money for a liveaboard (like us), you may want to opt for a slow wooden boat. That’s what we did, and it was the best decision we made. Prices vary wildly, so make sure to shop around and HAGGLE HAGGLE HAGGLE.

Sunset over Labuan Bajo, seen from La Cecile hotel

After booking your Komodo trip, grab lunch at Happy Banana , which offers beautiful poke bowls, sushi, vegan and healthy food, or Santeria , a trendy little warung.

Labuan Bajo has incredible sunsets, so celebrate it at a place with a good view and a cold drink in your hand. Paradise Bar , La Cecile, or Green Cherry are great places to do just that.

For dinner, head to the night market , where you can select your fish, lobster, crab, squid, or shells, and they will grill them for you.

Day 2: Komodo National Park

We left Labuan Bajo harbour around 9 am on our little boat and soon settled into life on the water. Our boat had a captain and his helper, and while they steered and prepared tea, coffee or food, we lived our best lives on deck.

During our Komodo trip we basically did nothing and jumped into the water to snorkel when the captain dropped the anchor. It was just great!

A phot of myself floating in clear blue water in front of the white sandbar called Taka Makassar in Komodo National Park

Our first stop for the day was Kanawa Island , where we snorkelled, swam and relaxed on the beach. After that, we moved to Manta Point , followed by another unbelievable snorkel session at Taka Makassar.

Taka Makassar is an idyllic, white sandbar facing Komodo Island, and the reef surrounding the little speck of sand is as good as good as snorkelling gets. Expansive coral gardens, both hard and soft, suddenly drop off into the cobalt-blue depths. I saw thousands of small reef fish, larger schooling fish and a black-tip shark.

We spent the night between Taka Makassar and Komodo Island, with magical luminous jellyfish lighting up the water around the boat.

Day 3: Komodo National Park to Labuan Bajo

Our second day in Komodo was just wow. The engines started  put-put-putting  as the sun was rising. We stumbled out of the cabin, and freshly brewed coffee and fantastic scenery greeted us as we cruised through the strong currents Komodo is known for.

Jin standing on top Padar Island, Komodo National Park, Flores, Indonesia

Our first stop brought us to Padar Island , perhaps Komodo’s most famous and beautiful spot. A short but steep hike to the summit rewards you with a surreal view of the rugged island and its multi-coloured beaches. You’ll see a white, grey and pink beach (THE Pink Beach) almost touching but separated by the mountains on Padar.

Next up is Pink Beach . We hit up a secret pink beach (yes, there is more than one pink beach in Komodo). While most boats visit the famous pink beach on Padar Island, our captain took us to a secluded pink beach on Rinca Island, which we had to ourselves.

Swimming at Pink beach, Komodo

Pink sand and excellent snorkelling kept us happy for quite some time before we continued for the main event – the Komodo dragons.

You can see Komodo dragons on either Komodo or Rinca Islands. We visited Rinca Island and saw a few huge reptiles. You can choose between a short, medium or long hike on Rinca, escorted by a park ranger. We suggest a short hike, as it can get hot, and the rangers know where the dragons are. They usually hang around the ranger post.

Flores Indonesia Itinerary

Heading back to Labuan Bajo, you can stop at the stunning Kelor Island for some last swimming (but disappointing snorkelling) before arriving back in town.

Back in civilization, check in at your hotel, shower the salt and sunscreen off, and treat yourself to a nice massage at Wae Molas Spa . After eating boat food for two days, you’ll agree that Fellas has the best pizza in Labuan Bajo.

Where to stay: Golo Hilltop

Day 4: Labuan Bajo to Ruteng

Transportation: Gunung Mas Cost: 160k IDR Duration: 4.5 hours

We expected Ruteng to be a necessary stop between Labuan Bajo and Bajawa, but this unassuming town was a pleasant surprise. It’s definitely worth stopping here to see the beautiful countryside.

Ruteng has two main attractions, the spider web rice fields and Liang Bua Cave, located in opposite directions and both around 20km from the town. It’s possible to visit both in the afternoon, but it could feel a bit rushed.

Two Gunung Mas services leave from Ruteng to Bajawa, one in the morning and another in the afternoon. We opted for the afternoon service.

A landscape of rice paddies and forested mountains, seen during our Flores Indonesia trip

We faffed around a bit after arriving in Ruteng, having coffee and snacks with our hosts at the guesthouse. They recommended places to visit, and we rented a scooter from them for 70K IDR per day.

We then rode into town in search of something warm to wear. We didn’t anticipate how chilly it would be in the highlands of Flores, so we advise you to pack accordingly.

Liang Bua Cave is where the remains of the Flores Hobbit , an early human species, were discovered in 2003. The Hobbit was just over one metre tall, and it was fascinating to visit the cave and the nearby Liang Bua Museum.

Even if you don’t have a fetish for early humans or palaeontology, the ride out is gorgeous, with expansive rice terraces and beautiful views.

The sun was setting already when we arrived back in Ruteng, so we were glad we decided to take the afternoon Gunung Mas the next day.

For dinner, we found the cosy Agape Cafe , which is popular with guides and drivers bringing their guests. If you crave something hot or sweet after dinner, Pasketa Coffee has damn fine coffee, hot chocolate and baked goodies. Give the  klappertaart  (coconut pie) a try.

Day 5: Ruteng to Bajawa

Transportation: Gunung Mas Cost: 120K IDR Duration: 5 hours

The spider web rice fields near Ruteng is a popular stop on most Flores Indonesia Itineraries

In the morning, we drove out to the town of Cancar, home to Ruteng’s most famous sight. If there was one thing I was not too excited about seeing it was the spider web ricefields . But once again, Ruteng proved me wrong.

Reaching Cancar, you climb up a ridge overlooking the rice fields. The view from the top is stunning, and the size is quite spectacular. And it’s not just one rice field, but 11 of them covering the landscape below, like spider webs. Don’t skip the rice fields.

Back in Ruteng, you can check out the Ruteng Cathedral , grab lunch and catch your Gunung Mas to Bajawa.

If you thought the road was winding, twisting and turning up and down to Ruteng, you have seen nothing yet. The road between Ruteng and Bajawa is like the tango for vehicles.

It was the longest and most tiring leg of our Flores trip, with non-stop ups and downs, twists and turns. We reached Bajawa in the dark.

Note that all the tourist accommodations in Bajawa are in a little enclave outside the town. Gunung Mas will not drop you off at your guesthouse but at a junction about 2 km away. Make a run for the one or two informal taxis waiting, or contact your accommodation ahead of time to arrange for pickup.

Days 6 & 7: Full Days in Bajawa

Jin bathing in a natural hot spring waterfall in Bajawa, Flores

Bajawa in the central highlands of Flores, at an altitude of over 1000 metres above sea level, is pure magic. Nestled on the forested slopes of the Innerie volcano, you’ll find some of the finest traditional villages in Indonesia, fantastic natural hot springs and some of the most sought-after coffee.

We spent two full days (three nights) in Bajawa and could easily have spent another day or two here. The area has so much beauty and interesting sights to explore, so make sure you have enough time to appreciate it. If you’re planning on summiting Mount Innerie in addition to sightseeing, you’ll definitely need at least three days in Bajawa.

The Bajawa attractions are all outside town, so you will need wheels. Ask your guesthouse to arrange a driver or an ojek (motorbike taxi), or rent a scooter and explore independently. We rented a scooter from Cinnamon Guesthouse, and Google Maps brought us (and got us lost) to all the sights we planned (and didn’t plan) on seeing.

Oggie waterfal near Bajawa

On the first day, we rode north of Bajawa to  Oggi Waterfall  and  Mangeruda Hot Springs . The hot springs were fantastic, and we spent a few good hours wallowing in the soothing hot water. The highlight of Mangeruda is the hot natural waterfall – you’ll see what we mean when you get there.

The next day, we headed south to the traditional villages of the Ngada and Lubu people. Numerous villages are hidden on the volcano’s slopes, with  Bena Village  being the most impressive. Luba village is less impressive but also less touristy. These villages offer a unique glimpse into the indigenous life and culture of Flores, where Christianity and animism coexist. You can also purchase some fine ikat in these villages.

Jin bathing in a natural hot spring near Bajawa, Flores

Malanage Natural Hot Springs , located near Bena, is another highlight to visit in Bajawa. The hot spring is more like a hot river, with a cold and hot river converging at the swimming spot. We found Mangeruda more relaxing, with several swimming spots and pools, but Malanage is much more scenic. Visit both and decide which one you prefer.

For one of the best views in Bajawa, go to Heaven’s Door , a Mexican-inspired restaurant and bar that offers amazing views of Innerie Volcano and the surrounding countryside. They serve delicious food and strong drinks, making it the perfect spot for a sundowner.

Day 8: Bajawa to Riung

Transportation: Shared car Cost: 100K IDR Duration: 2.5 hours

Old and outdated travel blogs will tell you about the horrendous road between Bajawa and Riung. That’s no longer the case. The road is now in excellent condition, just like the main Trans-Flores Highway. There is still a short stretch (5 km or so) that’s still badly potholed, but that’s it.

Cinnamon Guesthouse reserved two seats for us to Riung the day before, and the car picked us up around 11 am. We stopped to pick up one more passenger and were off to Riung.

From Bajawa, the road heads uphill, reaches that potholed stretch and then twists and winds down until you reach Riung on the northern shore of Flores.

Water buffaloes grazing in a coconut grove in Riung, Indonesia

We checked in at Nirvana Bungalows, a nice little place with nine freestanding bungalows under the trees and a lovely garden. We asked them to do our laundry and discussed our plans to visit the 17 Islands Marine Park.

It’s best to arrange a boat trip to the islands with your guesthouse, as they usually have their own boat or can contact their friends for availability. The average cost for a full-day trip, including lunch, was 1.5 million IDR (just under $100). Your guesthouse can help you find others to share the boat with to reduce the cost.

For dinner, we had delicious grilled fish and cold Bintangs at Nirvana, but there are also a few other local restaurants in Riung.

Where we stayed: Nirvana Bungalows. They are not on any online booking platform, so contact them on WhatsApp: (+62) 813 3710 6007 a few days in advance to make a reservation.

Day 9: 17 Islands Marine Park

Flying foxes flying in the morning, 17 Islands marine park near Riung

It’s not often you come across hidden gems like the 17 Islands Marine Park. This charming archipelago near Riung has uninhabited islands, white sandy beaches leading to coral reefs just a few meters from the shore, and a large flying fox colony. Despite being peak season in Flores, fewer than 20 people were in the park during our visit in July.

Our first stop was the flying fox colony, and man, are they incredible! The immense size of the creatures and their sheer number blew us away. And best, you’ll get to see them active during daylight.

Flores Indonesia Itinerary

There is some excellent snorkelling (although not as good as in Komodo) to be had before anchoring on a deserted island for some serious Robinson Crusoe time. We spent a few hours on Tiga Island, where we swam and snorkelled while our crew grilled up a mean fish BBQ on the beach.

Our next stop on our island hopping trip was Nunsa Rutong, where we climbed a steep hill for a sweeping view of the 17 Islands, followed by, you guessed it – more fantastic snorkelling.

Back in Riung, check out Pato Resto for good food and vibes, with live music for a nice little buzz in paradise.

Day 10: Riung to Moni

  • Transportation:
  • Riung to Roworeka Bus Terminal in Ende – shared car, 120K IDR, 4 hours
  • Roworeka Bus Terminal to Moni – bus, 50K IDR, 1 hour

A shared car and a good road brought us to Ende in about four hours, and our driver dropped us at Roworeke Bus Terminal.  Bus Terminal  is a very ambitious name, as it’s just a spot by the side of the road in front of a shop.

A well-known Flores scam unfolded as soon as we arrived.

Within minutes, a guy (bemo driver) approached us and said there were no buses to Moni, and we’d have to charter his bemo to Moni for IDR 300K. When we asked other people standing around if there was a bus to Moni, Bemo Guy made big eyes at them, so they kept quiet and avoided our question. One kind soul gestured to us to wait, and that was all we needed. The bus arrived after 15 minutes or so.

the bus that we took from Ende to Moni on our Flores Indonesia Itinerary

So, don’t fall for the scammers’ lies that there are no buses to Moni or that the last bus for the day has left already.

The bus ride to Moni takes approximately an hour on a good road and is quite comfortable for a public bus in Indonesia.

Arriving in Moni, we checked in at Santiago Bed & Breakfast and rented a scooter at Rainbow Cafe for 150K IDR per day. Moni is tiny, and you can easily get around on foot, but you’ll need wheels to get to Kelimutu.

There is now also an ATM in Moni, contrary to outdated blogs that advise you to bring cash with you. The ATM is located between Santiago and Mopi’s Place.

Mopi’s Place is a delightful spot to spend time with beautiful, healthy food, good, strong coffee and live music at night. Also check out the Murundao Waterfall, a five-minute walk from Rainbow Cafe.

Where to stay: Santiago Bed & Breakfast

Day 11: Kelimutu & Moni

Our Flores itinerary wows until the very end. We realised that as we looked over the three surreal Kelimutu Lakes . It’s one of the most incredible natural Indonesian landmarks – something you must see for yourself.

These cater lakes are known to change colour due to volcanic vents that release gas and steam. The most recent colour-combo is a teal, a pale jade-green and a black lake. The brilliant teal-coloured lake used to be a reddish-brown until it changed colour overnight.

The local Lio people believe the lakes are the home of departed souls. Evil souls go to the teal lake, while good and young souls go to the pale green lake next door for the afterlife. Old souls are destined to the black lake for eternity.

Kelimutu Lakes

After oohing and aahing at Kelimutu and enjoying some light hiking, you can ride your scooter down the Moni-Ende road to see the stunning rice terraces at Detusoko or for a soak in the Ae Oka hot spring . You can also visit the pretty village at Wollogai .

For dinner, we recommend trying Good Moni . It has a lovely deck overlooking the forest, and their soto ayam or croquettes are perfect for chilly nights.

Stay at: Santiago Bed & Breakfast

Day 12: Moni to Ende Airport

A Wings Air airplane seen at Ende airport in Flores. We took this plane from Ende to Kupang in West Timor

All good things must come to an end, right? (Who decided that???) Anyhoo. Like all good things, our Flores Indonesia itinerary has to end, too.

We arranged a private transfer with Santiago Bed and Breakfast to the airport in Ende, as we didn’t want to miss our flight.

H. Hasan Aroeboesman Airport in Ende (or just Ende Airport) has a brand-new terminal building which is modern and easy to navigate. There is only one little cafe in the departure area selling instant noodles, water, juice, and chips. If you want a proper meal, you can walk to the warungs across the street from the airport.

Ende Airport offers daily flights to Labuan Bajo and Kupang on Wings Air, which uses ATR 72 turboprop planes. Most people will just stay in Kupang long enough to catch their connecting flight to Bali, but we suggest you stay in Kupang for a day or two.

We found Kupang very laid back, with some of the friendliest people in Indonesia. It definitely is one of the country’s off-the-radar cities/regions to explore, so you might as well while you’re here.

You can also use Kupang as a starting point for an epic trip to explore the tribal villages of West Timor or travel overland to Timor Leste .

Read on to find out how to travel in Flores, Indonesia when you have only one week or less to travel the island after the Komodo Island boat trip.

Flores, Indonesia is the final stop of the Komodo boat trip  (this is the company I recommend), although most struggle with what to do after the cruise. They’re unsure what to do in Flores upon arrival, and unsure if they have enough time to travel in Flores.

Many people go on this boat trip to swim with whale sharks, experience sleeping on the deck, making friends from all over and, of course, see Komodo dragons. But what travelers don’t realize is that the island they land on is so worth exploring, even if you don’t have time to see it all.

In this travel guide to Flores, Indonesia, I’ll be sharing what to do on the island if you only have a short period of time. I’ll be giving you info I wish I had, like how to travel in Flores and outlining a one-week itinerary.

[This post contains affiliate links.]

Table of Contents

How to Get to Flores, Indonesia

The fastest and easiest way to get to Flores is to fly. The island actually has several airports, but Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo has the most connections and cheapest flights.

This post is aimed for those that arrived to Flores on the Komodo Island boat trip coming from Lombok . (Although, of course anyone can make use of my one-week itinerary in Flores.) While the journey is much more important than the destination for most travelers choosing this trip, the destination is pretty impressive too.

If you are arriving in Flores on the Komodo boat trip, you’ll arrive in the harbor at Labuan Bajo.

How to Travel in Flores, Indonesia

Travel in Indonesia isn’t always easy, and traveling in Flores is especially difficult. Coming from other Indonesian islands like Java, Bali and Lombok, I was surprised to find how hard it is to travel in Flores.

It’s more difficult to find a scooter or motorbike rental in Flores. There’s only one, windy main road that’s not always in the best condition. And much of the island is remote and undeveloped.

It’s not impossible to travel here, however. It just requires a bit of planning.

Traveling Flores, Indonesia by Motorbike

If you’re going to rent a motorbike in Flores, I’d recommend getting one in Labuan Bajo. It’s pricey, but it’s actually the cheapest price I found in Flores.

At my hostel in Labuan Bajo, they arranged a scooter for 80k per day. Having rented bikes for 50k in Bali and Lombok, I thought I could get cheaper elsewhere. But my hostel in Ruteng quoted 100k, and my homestay in Bajawa quoted 150k!

So if you’re planning to travel in Flores by motorbike, rent one in Labuan Bajo.

Make sure that you give yourself more time than expected to get from one place to another, as you’ll likely have to go slow on the winding roads. I saw a few accidents on the road (including my bus causing a motorist to fall), so make sure you’re being extra safe, especially when going around tight corners.

That being said, renting a motorbike and driving across Flores is the highlight of most people’s trips, so don’t be dissuaded! If you have good weather and are a confident rider, go for it! It will be much easier and cheaper to access remote areas, and you’ll save time on trying to find transport (which occupied much of my time in Flores).

Traveling Flores, Indonesia by Bus

Because I arrived in Flores at the beginning of rainy season and the weather wasn’t great, I opted for the bus. I’m glad I did, as the windy roads with bits of rocks and trees would be so much worse in the pouring rain and the resulting flooded streets.

But getting a bus wasn’t as cheap as I expected (about 120K to get from one city to another), and it was quite difficult to find info on it. I couldn’t find much online, so here’s what you need to know.

Gunung Mas is the bus company I went with, as it was the one recommended by all the accommodation that I stayed in.

Gunung Mas bus in Flores

They have an office in Labuan Bajo, so it’s easy to get your ticket. However, the office is located far from the center so it would be easiest just to give them a message or call (you can Whatsapp them at +62 852 3932 2000).

They also have an office in Ruteng and it’s in the center of town (right next door to my accommodation, ChaCha Dormitory) so it’s easiest to just head there for a ticket.

They do not have an office in Bajawa, so the only way to get picked up there is to get the driver’s phone number (I got it from the office in Ruteng) and call to see if there’s space on the bus. If there is, you’ll get picked up on the side of the road. This is how I got back to Ruteng from Bajawa. It was quite stressful, since I had to wait for almost 2 hours, unsure if the bus would actually come.

Traveling Flores, Indonesia by Shared Taxi

Another way to travel throughout Flores is to go by a shared taxi. It’s a cheap alternative to traveling in a private car, and you’ll share a car with others traveling in the same direction as you. It was only slightly more expensive than the bus.

Or, you might get lucky and get the car to yourself if no one else is interested in a ride. This happened to me, but I would have much preferred the bus, to be honest. The driver was going super slow in populated places as he was trying to get more customers, so it took an extra few hours to get from Ruteng to Bajawa.

Traveling Flores, Indonesia on a Tour

The easiest (but also most expensive) way to travel in Flores is to take a tour . Especially if you’re low on time in Flores, it might be worth not needing to deal with the difficult modes of transportation on the island and also have the logistics sorted out for you.

But because Flores is a bit off the beaten path and not as developed as other islands in Indonesia, there aren’t too many options. This highly-rated tour is the only one departing from Labuan Bajo that I found online.

Flores rice terrace scenery

What to do after the Komodo boat trip

Most people on my boat just spent a few days in Labuan Bajo and flew onwards. It’s not because they didn’t want to travel Flores, but because they didn’t think that they had time.

Flores is a big island without much infrastructure for easy travel (pretty much just one road cutting across the mountainous island), so time is necessary if you want to see all of Flores.

But if you do have a bit of time, after the Komodo boat trip you should explore the island that the cruise ends on. If you only have a few days or one week to spare, read on for the itinerary I created for my own travels in Flores.

How Many Days Do You Need to Travel in Flores, Indonesia

If you want to travel the entirety of Flores, Indonesia, you have to dedicate about two weeks , especially if you want to return back to Labuan Bajo to catch an international flight off the island.

And many people who do the Komodo Island boat trip want to return to Lombok or other Indonesian islands. Since Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo has the cheapest flights, many want to end their trip in Flores in the same city where they stared. In this case, a roundtrip journey to anywhere else in Flores is necessary.

In my opinion, the only way you can travel across Flores in just one week is if you take an organized tour and if you travel the island one way (i.e. fly out from a different airport on the other side of the island).

I traveled in Flores for about one week , but I only made it about halfway through Flores before heading back to Labuan Bajo. Although I didn’t get to see the whole island, I’m happy I got to see and experience at least some of this welcoming and beautiful island.

It is definitely worth it to travel outside of Labuan Bajo. You just need a bit of time and the energy and adventurous spirit for it!

So, if you have some time to spare after the Komodo boat trip, I think it’s definitely worth staying in Flores a few days longer and trying to see at least some of it.

Here’s what my itinerary to travel in Flores looked like, which allowed me to see some of Flores, Indonesia points of interest in just one week .

P.S. I highly recommend reading Flores: A Glimpse of the People and Culture to enhance your visit to Flores. You’ll learn a lot about the places you’ll visit on this itinerary.

One-Week Itinerary for Travel in Flores, Indonesia

Labuan Bajo

Day 1: Arrive in Labuan Bajo

You’ll reach Labuan Bajo in the afternoon, just after your last stop of the trip and a final lunch. Go check into your accommodation first. The most popular options on my boat were the two hostels: Seaesta (pretty expensive, but quite fancy) and La Boheme (my choice—not only cheaper, but really nice staff, colorful and welcoming space, and more of backpacker feel).

Then, spend the rest of your day resting from the boat trip and exploring Labuan Bajo. The marina and Puncak Waringin are both nice places to watch sunset.

And finally, enjoy some Western food for dinner, since you’re probably missing it after a few days on the boat.

You’ll also want to get your transport to Ruteng for the next day sorted out (see my tips in the transportation section above). Unless you want to travel Flores by scooter. In that case, organize a scooter or motorbike for the following day so that you don’t waste time.

Ruteng Old Church

Day 2: Travel to Ruteng

After breakfast, either get on your scooter or bus and drive up to Ruteng.

Drive from Labuan Bajo to Ruteng: 127 kms (roughly 4 hours, but probably more depending on stops, traffic and road conditions)

The drive is mostly through the mountains, and you’ll have tons of stunning views. If you’re on a scooter, you’ll likely be stopping a lot for pictures. If you’re traveling by bus, get a window seat and have your camera ready.

Also, a popular stop between the two cities is Wae Rebo Village. If you have a scooter and stop here, add an extra day onto your itinerary. You have to hike to the village, and your entry into it includes accommodation.

I almost did this, but I’m glad I didn’t. It’s not cheap, and from what I heard, it’s no longer the experience it once was before it got commercialized. And, as you’ll see in this one-week itinerary through Flores, you’ll have other chances to visit a traditional village in Flores.

When you arrive in Ruteng, I recommend staying at Chacha . In fact, it’s worth visiting Ruteng just to stay at Chacha!

Cha Cha dormitory in Ruteng

Chacha is a hostel in the home of the kindest family ever. The couple running it does so much to make you feel welcomed, and I’ve never felt so at home at any other hostel.

They have a restaurant out front, and the food is honestly the best I’ve had in not just Flores, but all of Indonesia. The breakfast was so filling and delicious—the chicken porridge was my favorite.

After the Komodo boat trip and the bus ride over to Ruteng, this is the perfect place to relax for the day. You’ll have either fellow travelers or the family members and their friends to chat to.

Day 3: Ruteng Day Trip

Today you’ll explore the area around Ruteng. You can get a tour arranged from Chacha (they’ll be more than happy to help you out with whatever else you might need).

Or, if you have a motorbike, or want to rent one, here’s what to visit yourself:

First stop: Todo Village

Todo Village

This traditional village is a cheaper and easier one to visit than Wae Rebo.

You are given traditional clothes worn by the village’s royal family to enter the village. Then, you attend a ceremony conducted by the village elder. It’s meant to welcome you to the village and asking the ancestors for your protection.

It feels a bit touristy, with women selling their woven wares, and the buildings are actually replicas, since they had deteriorated and were knocked down decades ago. But it’s still a village worth visiting.

Todo Village has a lot of history, and it was the most important village in Manggarai, so it’s interesting to visit this site.

Second stop: Spiderweb rice fields

Spiderweb rice fields in Cancar, Flores

The rice fields, located in Cancar, look like spiderwebs. This is because of how they were split up to separate each family’s portion of the land. You can go up to a viewpoint to see them from above, and it looks so cool!

There is a small fee to access this viewpoint, and it’s totally worth it.

Third stop: Air Terjun Tengkulese

It’s not easy getting to this one. A car can only go so far through the village, so you’ll have to walk quite a bit.

But it is admittedly a very impressive waterfall. It’s absolutely giant and two-tiered, and the walk to it is very beautiful. You’ll pass a rural village and impressive rice fields, with stunning, lush scenery all around.

tour flores indonesia

Be prepared to climb an unstable ladder to get close to the powerful waterfall, and to pay a small fee to your local guides (mostly children).

Fourth stop: Hobbit Cave

While there isn’t a whole lot to see, this is such a fascinating place to visit, and one of the best reasons to visit Ruteng.

In 2004, archeologists discovered a yet undiscovered species of humans: Homo floresiensis . The bones found were 60,000 to 100,000 years old, and these small humans were only around 106 cm (around 3 feet) tall.

You’ll find a small museum detailing the discovery and facts about these little humans, and you can go inside the cave.

Unless you’re there during an excavation (they were halted for a few years due to Covid, but usually occur annually), all you’ll see is a (at first glance, unimpressive) cave. But it’s a place where an important scientific discovery occurred, and so it’s worth going just to soak that in!

At the end of your day trip around Ruteng, head back to Chacha for some socializing or relaxing—it’s great for both!

Day 4: Travel to Bajawa

Today is another travel day, and it’s not an easy one. The road to get from Ruteng to Bajawa is tough. If you’re low on time or prefer to relax, you can go back to Luang Prabang today. You’ll have to skip Bajawa, but at least you got to explore the area around Ruteng (and experience a warm welcome at Chacha!).

But if you’re up for more adventure, head onwards to Bajawa.

Drive from Ruteng to Bajawa: 136 kms (roughly 4 hours, but probably more depending on stops, traffic and road conditions—it took my driver 6 hours because he was going super slow to look for more customers)

A bus leaves from Ruteng to Bajawa at 7am and 1 pm. You can buy a ticket from the Gunung Mas bus office (next door to Chacha).

If you have a motorbike or scooter, be careful on the sharp and numerous turns of the road, and enjoy the freedom.

Otherwise, you can get a taxi or shared taxi to Bajwa.

I personally enjoyed Ruteng more than Bajawa, which I didn’t find too appealing of a city. But don’t worry; there is plenty to do around Bajwa.

On your first day, I’d recommend going to Wolobobo Viewpoint . From here, you can watch sunset with a view of the volcano, Mount Inerie.

Mount Inerie and Bena Village

Day 5: Bajawa and return to Ruteng

If you’re up for it, hike up Mount Inerie for sunrise. I personally didn’t do it due to a storm, but a fellow traveler highly recommended it. You’ll need a guide to hike up (no paths), but you can arrange one at your homestay.

What you shouldn’t miss while in Bajawa is Bena Village and Malanage Hot Springs .

Bena Village was my favorite traditional village in Flores. It was different from the villages in neighboring Manggarai (Bena is part of Ngada) and was fascinating to learn about. And it helps that the village is surrounded by stunning scenery (including a view of Mount Inerie).

Malanage Hot Springs is one of the most interesting hot springs I’ve ever visited, and I’ve been spoiled by Iceland . It’s a small natural pool under which two rivers meet: one hot and one cold. Because of this, one side of the pool has cold water while the other has hot water. Sitting in the middle feels so weird!

Getting back to Ruteng is tricky if you want to take the bus. There’s no Gunung Mas bus station in this city, and I was lucky to have caught it. I got the driver’s number from the office in Ruteng and had someone call him. This was the only way to see if he could take me, as Bajawa is not an official stop. I had to wait on the side of the road for almost two hours, unsure if he’d even come.

It was really stressful, so I’d recommend trying a different transportation method.

If you have a scooter, plan to have enough daylight to get back to Ruteng. And if you’re taking shared taxi,  ask your accommodation ( Cinnamon Guesthouse or Kristian Homestay  are the most popular backpacker options) for help.

Alternative Onwards Journey

Alternatively, if you have the time, you can keep going onwards and travel the whole island. From Bajwa, it’s 3 hours up to Riung (17 Islands Park) or 5-6 hours to Ende and Moni (Kelimutu, the beautiful three colored lakes volcano), and then from there, another 3-4 hours to Maumere : the end of Flores. You can fly back to Labuan Bajo from Maumere, or fly to another Indonesia island (although tickets were cheaper from Labuan Bajo).

Day 6: Ruteng to Labuan Bajo

But it was really nice waking up in Chacha again. Because of how welcoming the hostel is, it truly felt like returning home. I was genuinely sad to leave.

I spent this morning going to a local school to speak English to the students, having gotten invited by a schoolteacher who I met at Cha Cha (he said he tries to recruit tourists staying at this hostel often). And after, I got a tour of the local market and visited this vibrant city’s many churches and cathedral.

I caught a bus back to Ruteng in the early afternoon, and then spent the evening enjoying Western food and playing pool at La Boheme.

Alternatively, you can catch a morning bus from Ruteng and fly out of Flores on Day 6.

La Boheme Bajo

Day 7: Travel Onwards

On your final day in Flores, you may have time to explore more of this surprisingly nice city. But even if you have an early morning flight, know that you have visited a lot in just one week in Flores.

Hopefully, despite this super busy one-week itinerary traveling through Flores, you’ll get a chance to meet and befriend some of the lovely people who call this island home and learn about their culture. If nothing else, you’ll definitely be seeing the beautiful scenery Flores offers.

So while it’s not the easiest island in Indonesia to travel, it certainly is possible to travel Flores in just one week following this itinerary. There’s much more to see on Flores, but this will offer you a little taste of this island.

Some might find this one-week Flores itinerary too fast, and admittedly it did feel a bit rushed. But I don’t regret attempting it. This one week was among the highlights of my time in Indonesia, and I look forward to returning to this welcoming island one day.

Consider exploring Flores using this itinerary if you have a week to spare after arriving in Labuan Bajo after the Komodo boat trip!

The Wonders of Indonesia's Biodiversity

Indonesia's biodiversity is unparalleled. The most iconic being the Komodo dragon , the world's largest lizard. These majestic creatures can only be found in the Komodo National Park, making it a must-visit for wildlife enthusiasts.

Exploring the Cultural Tapestry

  • Festivals: Time your visit with local festivals like Nyepi or Galungan to get a real taste of Indonesian culture.
  • Island Hopping: With thousands of islands, consider chartering a boat or taking local ferries to explore the lesser-known ones.

Indonesia Beyond the Tourist Trail

While destinations like Bali and Jakarta are well-trodden by tourists, Indonesia has a plethora of hidden treasures waiting to be discovered. Venturing off the beaten path can lead to some of the most unforgettable travel experiences.

Sulawesi: A Diver's Paradise

For those passionate about marine life, Sulawesi is a dream come true . The Togian Islands, nestled in the Gulf of Tomini, are home to vibrant coral reefs, diverse marine species, and the unique Bajau sea nomads. Dive into crystal-clear waters and be mesmerized by the underwater spectacle.

Flores: The Land of Dragons and Volcanoes

While Komodo dragons are the main attraction, Flores offers more than just these prehistoric lizards. The Kelimutu volcano, with its three colored lakes that change hues unpredictably, is a sight to behold. The traditional villages of Bena and Wae Rebo provide a glimpse into the island's rich cultural heritage.

Raja Ampat: The Crown Jewel of Biodiversity

Located off the northwest tip of Papua, Raja Ampat is an archipelago comprising over 1,500 small islands. It's considered the global epicenter of marine biodiversity. With over 75% of the world's coral species and a myriad of fish species, it's a diver's and snorkeler's haven.

Embracing Local Traditions

One of the joys of traveling to Indonesia is immersing oneself in its diverse cultures. Attend a traditional Toraja funeral ceremony in Sulawesi, where death is celebrated as a significant life event. Or witness the age-old tradition of Ikat weaving in Sumba, where intricate patterns tell tales of ancestors and legends.

Indonesia, with its rich cultural tapestry, diverse landscapes, and warm hospitality, promises an experience like no other. Whether you're a history buff, a beach lover, or an adventure seeker, Indonesia awaits with open arms and countless stories.

Clever Journey | Travel Gear Reviews, Packing Tips, Travel Advice

I've traveled to 9 out of 10 countries in Southeast Asia. Here are the 5 biggest mistakes I made along the way.

  • I've traveled solo to nine countries in Southeast Asia.
  • I've made many mistakes, from traveling during monsoon season to forgetting to bring enough cash.
  • Travelers should make sure they plan ahead and research each country's culture.

Insider Today

Over the last two years, my journey as a travel enthusiast and Business Insider's travel reporter in Singapore has brought me to almost every country in Southeast Asia.

In total, there are 10 countries in Southeast Asia , and I've traveled to nine of them — Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, and Brunei. Myanmar remains the only country in the region I have not visited, and while I am keen to explore it, I have held off on visiting because of the country's ongoing civil war.

I've watched the sun rise in Angkor Wat in Cambodia and cared for elephants in Chiang Mai, Thailand. I've explored the Bornean jungle in Brunei and crawled the Cu Chi Tunnels in southern Vietnam.

But it hasn't always been easy. I've made several mistakes traveling across the region , especially as a solo traveler. Here are five mistakes I made and how to avoid them.

1. Going during monsoon season and not planning for the weather.

tour flores indonesia

In July, I traveled to Thailand on a reporting trip to cover the budding cannabis industry . There, I was met with heavy rain nearly every day. In Bangkok, I was staying in a hostel in Chakkrawat , a district with narrow, meandering streets, which made it difficult to walk anywhere in the pouring rain.

I didn't plan for the weather, so I didn't have an umbrella or poncho with me and had to rush to get one at the last minute. I also had a packed itinerary with a lot of travel between meetings, which was a hassle in the constant downpour.

Before traveling to Southeast Asia, make sure to avoid two seasons — the monsoon season, which often comes with strong typhoons in countries like the Philippines, and the burning season, where farmers burn land for fertile soil. This is a common occurrence in countries like Laos, Thailand, and the island of Borneo, which is shared between Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

When I traveled to Laos in April last year during the burning season , most of my plans — including a hot air balloon ride — were canceled because of the thick smog. I also didn't have an N95 mask with me, and I ended up with a sore throat.

If you do plan to come during these seasons, make sure to pack accordingly and plan a flexible schedule.

2. Traveling during Ramadan and expecting the same practices everywhere.

tour flores indonesia

Having grown up in Singapore, I'm familiar with the practices during Ramadan , the holy month for Muslims, where they fast for most of the day. I studied Malay for seven years, and in school, I often fasted with my Muslim classmates and ate only in private.

Still, in many cities in Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia , non-Muslims are free to dine in public, so long as they do so respectfully. But on my trip to Brunei in April — at the height of the burning season and in the middle of Ramadan — there were more practices I needed to observe.

Most restaurants were closed, and diners weren't allowed to eat there even if they were open — only take-out was allowed. Eating in public was a major faux pas even for non-Muslims, and if you want to drink some water, you can only do so when nobody is around.

It wasn't easy, especially as Brunei was sweltering at 100 degrees Fahrenheit on some days. I made do by returning to the hotel for lunch and grabbing a big dinner with the locals at the night market after they had broken their fast.

3. Not packing enough modest outfits when visiting temples and mosques.

tour flores indonesia

Southeast Asia is pretty liberal, and you can wear whatever you want in many places. In popular destinations like Phuket, Thailand, and Bali, Indonesia, lots of tourists walk around in bikini tops and shorts, and locals mostly tolerate it.

But there are certain places you do need to cover up, like places of worship, which include temples and mosques. When I visited Angkor Wat — the famed temple complex in Cambodia — in February last year, I found some tourists being told off by the local tour guides for wearing shorts and tank tops — "Tomb Raider" style.

I've learned to err on the right side of caution and bring a sarong wherever I go. It's an easy way to cover up and make an outfit more modest when you need to.

4. Forgetting to pack medication, especially when I plan to eat street food.

tour flores indonesia

Southeast Asia has some of the world's most flavorful food. In every country, you can find food that is cheap and delicious, and that includes Singapore , the world's most expensive city. In countries like Malaysia and Vietnam, street food dishes can cost as little as a dollar.

I eat mostly street food when I travel in Southeast Asia, so medicine for tummy-related illnesses is a must. I've only gotten sick twice from eating street food — and it was the same dish both times— and unfortunately, those were the few times I didn't have medicine with me.

I'm a pretty adventurous eater. I've eaten everything from pufferfish stew to frog porridge and dishes made with intestines off the street. I've learned to wash the utensils provided before digging in and make sure the food is cooked to order and heated up before being served.

5. Relying on my card and not bringing enough cash with me.

tour flores indonesia

In Singapore, I don't really use cash and often use Apple Pay, mobile payments, and cards. But I've found that many stores in other countries in Southeast Asia only accept cash.

For example, on my third trip to Vietnam, I spent an hour trying to make payment via bank transfer after the staff at a luxury perfume shop — which was selling items priced upwards of $200 — informed me at the last minute that they didn't accept card or contactless payment.

I've also found the majority of street vendors in the region only accept mobile payment — which is limited to local banks — or cash. I've learned to change a considerable amount of money before leaving the airport and keep whatever I didn't use for my next trip.

Muslims worldwide celebrate Eid al-Fitr in the shadow of Gaza’s misery

Muslims around the world celebrated the Eid al-Fitr holiday Wednesday, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan. But events were overshadowed by the worsening crisis in Gaza and Israel’s expected military offensive in Rafah city after six months of war.

“We should not forget our brothers and sisters in Palestine,” one imam, Abdulrahman Musa, said in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi. “They have been subjected to unjustified aggression and a lot of violence (as) the world is watching in silence.”

In a holiday message, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan sent support to Gaza, which he called a “bleeding wound on the conscience of humanity.”

In Istanbul, some of the thousands of worshipers at the Aya Sofya Mosque carried Palestinian flags and chanted slogans in support of residents of Gaza, where the United Nations warns that more than a million people are at threat of imminent famine and little aid is allowed in.

Inside Gaza, there was little joy. Palestinians in the refugee camp of Jabaliya near Gaza City mourned loved ones among the over 33,000 killed in Israel’s offensive in response to Hamas’s deadly Oct. 7 attack in Israel.

Om Nidal Abu Omeira sat alone among bombed-out buildings and wept on the grave of her mother, son-in-law, and grandson. All were killed in Israel’s offensive.

“They (the children) keep saying, ‘I miss my father, where is he?’ I tell them that he’s in heaven,” she told The Associated Press. “They start crying, and then I start crying with them.”

Elsewhere, people were grateful for the plenty they had after a month of fasting and reflection. Before the holiday, markets around the world teemed with shoppers. Residents poured out of cities to return to villages to celebrate with loved ones.

In Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim nation, nearly three-quarters of the population were traveling for the annual homecoming known locally as “mudik.”

“This is a right moment to reconnect, like recharging energy that has been drained almost a year away from home,” said civil servant Ridho Alfian.

Jakarta’s Istiqlal Grand Mosque, the largest in Southeast Asia, was flooded with devotees. Preachers in their sermons called on people to pray for Muslims in Gaza.

“This is the time for Muslims and non-Muslims to show humanitarian solidarity, because the conflict in Gaza is not a religious war, but a humanitarian problem,” said Jimly Asshiddiqie, who chairs the advisory board of the Indonesian Mosque Council.

In Berlin, worshipers reflected the world, coming from Benin, Ghana, Syria, Afghanistan and Turkey.

“It’s a day where we feel grateful for everything we have here, and think and give to those who are poor, facing war and have to go hungry,” said Azhra Ahmad, a 45-year-old mother of five.

In Pakistan , authorities deployed more than 100,000 police and paramilitary forces to maintain security at mosques and marketplaces.

In Malaysia, ethnic Malay Muslims performed morning prayers at mosques nationwide just weeks after socks printed with the word “Allah” at a convenience store chain sparked a furor. Many found it offensive.

Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim called for unity and reconciliation, saying no groups should be sidelined based on religion or any other reason.

In Russia, worshipers gathered as their leaders vowed loyalty to fellow citizens amid tensions following last month’s attack by an extremist group on a music hall outside Moscow in which 130 people were killed. The Islamic State group’s Afghanistan affiliate claimed responsibility.

“As our country’s president, Vladimir Putin, said, terrorism has neither a nationality nor a religion, the chairman of the Council of Muftis in Russia said. “We call to unite against the threat, against those dark forces.”

Karmini contributed from Jakarta along with Associated Press journalists around the world.
