Pompeii was a booming port city in the ancient Roman Empire. But all that changed on August 24th, A.D. 79 when the Mt. Vesuvius volcano erupted. Those who were not killed by the missiles of pumice raining down or the lava were wiped out by the toxic gases.

Pompeii Opening Hours and Tickets

Pompeii is open to visitors every day of the week (with seasonal visiting hours) except on December 25, May 1, and January 1 when it is closed—unless otherwise communicated on the website.

Visiting Hours: 

• From April 1 to October 31: Open daily from 9 am to 7 pm, last entrance at 5:30 pm.
• From November 1 to March 31: Open daily from 9 am to 5 pm, last entrance at 3:30 pm.

Certain villas are closed to the public on Tuesdays.

You can buy your tickets for the Pompeii Archaeological Park directly at the entrance. There are three entrances: Porta Marina, Piazza Anfiteatro, and Piazza Esedra.

You’ll most likely be entering through the Porta Marina, which is the entrance next to the train station and main parking area. It’s also the main ticket desk, so you can buy your ticket here and begin your adventure.

How To Get To Pompeii 

Most people who visit Pompeii come by train from Naples. The good thing is that the train station where you need to get off is right in front of the entrance to the archeological park. It’s a quick walk to the entrance and you can’t miss it.

See the details below to get to Pompeii by train from Rome and the Amalfi Coast and directions for those who have rented a car.

The high-speed train from Rome to Naples runs every 20 minutes. You can take the train from Roma Termini station to Napoli Centrale in just over an hour. Book on Trenitalia or through Italo. They are two competing train companies. I prefer Italo.

From Napoli Centrale, you can switch to the local train to Pompeii. The local train, called the Circumvesuviana, is located down the corridor in what is technically Napoli Garibaldi Station.

Take the train towards Sorrento and you’ll arrive at the Pompei Scavi – Villa Dei Misteri station after about 20 minutes. The station is a matter of feet from the entrance to the archaeological area.

If you’ve rented a car, it’s quite easy. Get on the Grande Raccordo Anulare (GRA) and head onto the A1 highway to Naples. Once you get close to Naples you change to the Motorway A3 Napoli-Salerno (exit Pompeii ovest). Or just add the destination to your GPS.

From the Amalfi Coast

Sorrento is the only town close to Pompeii with a train station. If you’re not in Sorrento, you’ll need to make your way there, jump on the train headed in the direction of Napoli Centrale, and get off at Pompei Scavi – Villa Dei Misteri.

For the adventurous souls who rent a car, get to the Motorway A3 Napoli-Salerno (exit Pompeii ovest). Or use your GPS navigation.

Bar Sgambati : €€ | Quick Snack —This is the Bar/ Restaurant/ Pizzeria right next to the train station where you get off to visit Pompeii. The food and prices are average, but this is your best bet to get something to eat in the area before or after your trip to the archeological site.

Pompeii Tickets or Tour?

Depending on whether you’re an independent tourist or not, you’ll have to choose between a guided tour or a simple entry ticket to the archaeological site of Pompeii.

Entry and skip-the-line tickets are great if you’ve already visited Pompeii in the past or if you aren’t too interested in the history of Pompeii. You should note that there aren’t many informational signs among the ruins, and you might miss out on a lot this way.

• Single-timed entrance to the Pompeii Archaeological Park. 

If you want to experience more, it’s recommended that you book a guided tour through an official third-party ticket site. Make sure to double-check the details of your preferred tour. It may stipulate the time of your Pompeii entrance and the time you can spend in the ancient city. 

Certain ticket options may even include audio guides, skip-the-line entry, and a visit to nearby Mount Vesuv ius . There are a variety of available ticket packages to explore Pompeii and other sites that were destroyed by Vesuvius in 79AD including Herculaneum.

Buy Tickets on the Official Pompeii Site

The official website of the Pompeii Archaeological Park is called Pompeiisites.org . However, all ticket purchases are made through TicketOne, the official ticket site . TicketOne is an Italian company that sells tickets to events and historical locations across Italy. 

Unfortunately, this website is not easy to use and is sometimes confusing as ticket information is translated from Italian to English. Plus, their refund policy is not ideal. 

• Pros of booking on TicketOne – TicketOne is the official page, tickets are cheaper than third-party partners, and there is only one ticket option, so the choice is not overwhelming.
• Cons of booking on TicketOne – The system is difficult to navigate, there is little to no information about the ticket and what is included, and it currently only shows the 09:00 entry time.

Pompeii Tickets via an Official Partner

Whether you prefer buying a physical ticket or would rather book tickets online, there are many places you can buy tickets to visit Pompeii. Official ticket partners include GetYourGuide , Liv Tours , Walks of Italy , and Tiqets .

Below are the answers to some frequently asked questions about visiting Pompeii.

Do You Need to Buy Pompeii Tickets in Advance?

Yes, buying tickets in advance is advised. Tickets can be purchased on the ground, but availability is not always guaranteed. Furthermore, the ticket line can be very long. You’re looking at up to two hours of waiting time in summer, which isn’t ideal if you’re a tourist. 

Make sure to purchase your tickets well in advance to leave room for changes and to make sure you find availability on your preferred dates.

When Do Pompeii Tickets Go on Sale?

Unlike many of the major sites in Italy, tickets for Pompeii are not released to a set schedule. You can save some money by booking in advance. 

Can You Buy Pompeii Tickets on the Day?

Yes, tickets can be bought at certain gates of the Pompeii ruins. Porta Marina, Piazza Esedra, and Piazza Anfiteatro are the entrances where you can purchase tickets. The Pompeii entrance fee is about €19 per person.

What Are the Opening Hours for Pompeii?

From April to October, the archaeological park is open from 09:00 to 19:00, and from November to March, the Pompeii opening hours are 09:00 to 17:00.

What Is the Best Time to Visit Pompeii?

The best time to visit Pompeii is in the afternoon after all the cruise ship passengers have left the park. To really appreciate the ruins, it is best to go when it’s quiet, for that reason, it’s recommended that you don’t visit on the first Sunday of each month as they are very busy.

Are There Any Discounts or Free Entry for Pompeii?

If you visit on the first Sunday of the month, you can get a free entry ticket to Pompeii at the physical ticket office. But do be warned, there will be a lot of people, and availability is limited to prevent overcrowding. 

EU citizens between the ages of 18-25 qualify for a reduced fee of €2.00, and children under the age of 18 are granted free access. An identity document needs to be presented in these cases. 

Do I Need to Print My Pompeii Tickets?

No. While having a copy of your ticket is never a bad idea, you can show the PDF version of your ticket from your smartphone to enter the Pompeii Ruins.

The Archaeological park of Pompeii is located in Italy and 2 kilometers from the center of Naples . The site is located at the foot of the Vesuvius volcano. The city was founded around the 8th century BC by the people of the Osken. The volcano Vesuvius destroys Pompeii

Earthquakes were common during this period and not many people were surprised by them. In 62 AD, a major earthquake struck, causing chaos and severe damage to the city. Some of the inhabitants of Pompeii fled, but some stayed in the city to rebuild it. Not knowing that this earthquake was the prelude to a much greater disaster. Pompeii was located at the base of the volcano of Mount Vesuvius and was completely covered in a layer of ash from the volcano in 79 AD. During the eruption, around 20,000 people lived in the area and it was also a much-visited holiday destination for the Romans. Although a large part managed to flee the city, the remaining remnant of the population was attacked just in the following night by the suddenly descending ash cloud. 1000 human remains were found in the Pompeii ruins alone.

Centuries later, Pompeii is rediscovered

The volcanic eruption pushed cities like Pompeii and Herculaneum into oblivion. The city of Pompeii was completely covered with a meter high layer of ash. Finally, in the year 1599, the city was found during the digging of a canal. Later in the 18th century, efforts were made to remove the two cities from the ash layer. • Casa e Thermopolium di Vetutius Placidus was a small fast food restaurant. Here you can clearly see the counter and the various old pots in which food was kept.
• The Anfiteatro (amphitheatre) was used for gladiatorial games. This site is still fairly intact and shows the place where 20,000 visitors could enjoy the fighting of gladiators.
• Next to the Anfiteatro you will find Palestra Grande , an old gymnasium. It is believed that young people were playing sports during the eruption of Vesuvius, because bodies have been found at the exit of boys who were probably trying to escape.

How to go from Rome to Pompeii

Pompeii ruins are in Campania, Italy, 14 miles (23 km) southeast of Naples.

Pompeii’s location is at the southeastern base of Mount Vesuvius, which didn’t go in its favor when the volcano erupted.

There are three ways to get to Pompeii – take a train or a bus or book a tour, including transportation.

Distance between Rome and Pompeii

Pompeii is 250 km (155 miles) from Rome by road.

If you travel by road, you can cover this distance in about two and a half hours.

The railway distance is only 212 km (132 Miles), but because you have to change trains in Naples, the train journey also takes two and a half hours.

Pompeii by bus

A bus is a recommended option only if you are already in Naples.

SITA local buses leave Nuova Marina port in Naples to Pompeii every half hour.

The bus ticket, which costs a little less than €3 one way, can be bought from the SITA office at Nuova Marina port.

The journey time is approximately 35 minutes.

Train from Rome to Pompeii

Pompeii day trip by train is the best option if you are holidaying in the Italian capital.

This trip to Pompeii has two legs:

Rome to Naples by train

Every day, there are 16 trains which leave Roma Termini station in Rome for Naples Central station.

If you buy a Rome to Naples ticket on a high-speed train (Frecciarossa or Frecciabianca), you can save travel time.

Your train from Rome will arrive at the  Naples Centrale station , which is meant for inter-city trains.

Important: Book Rome to Naples high-speed train tickets at least a week to ten days in advance for cheap rates. If you book a day or two before your Pompeii visit, the return tickets can cost you 60+ Euros per person. In such a case, it is much wiser to book a Rome to Pompeii day trip , which includes transportation.

Naples to Pompeii by train

Once you reach Naples, you must get onto a Circumvesuviana train towards Pompeii.

From the Naples station for inter-city trains, you must get to the adjacent station from where Circumvesuviana trains depart.

The frequency of Circumvesuviana trains is one every half hour.

You must get off the Circumvesuviana train at Pompei Scavi station , located 50 meters (164 ft) from the entrance to Pompeii.

The journey from Naples central to Pompei Scavi (also known as Pompeii train station) is approximately 45 minutes.

Important: Some tourists don’t want the hassle of finding Rome to Pompeii train times, booking tickets, etc. So, they opt for either Pompeii day trips from Rome or Pompeii coach tours from Naples .

On weekdays, Pompeii ruins open at 9 am, and on weekends, they open at 8.30 am.

In the peak months of April to October, Pompeii closes at 7 pm, and the attraction closes early at 5 pm from November to March. 

The last entry is 90 minutes before closing time.

Note:  Since tourists combine nearby archaeological sites such as Herculaneum, Oplontis, Boscoreale, and Stabia, they visit Pompeii ruins. Their timing is similar.

Pompeii’s archaeological area is closed on three days – 1 January, 1 May, and Christmas on 25 December.

Pompeii is 44 square hectares and will take more than two days to explore. 

However, if you were to focus only on the highlights of Pompeii, you need three hours.

If you are traveling with kids and seniors, a similar highlights-only tour will last four hours.

Note:  Many tourists want to know if it is possible to  combine the Pompeii visit with Herculaneum  ruins. Yes, it is possible.

The best time to visit Pompeii is before 10 am.

Coaches start bringing in large tour groups by 10.30 am and crowd the ticketing counters, the lines to enter the ruins, and its famous attractions.

The next best time to visit Pompeii ruins is 3 pm because, after lunchtime, the massive crowd has started to leave or has already left.

During the peak season, the ruins are open till 7 pm, so even if you start at 3 pm, you get four hours to explore. 

During the non-peak months, the ruins close at 5 pm.

Note: If you stay in Rome or Naples, it is almost impossible to reach Pompeii by 10 am. This is all the more reason for you to book your  Pompeii tickets in advance  so that you can enter the ruins the moment you arrive.

How to avoid the crowd

There are two places where you may want to avoid the crowd:

At the ticketing lines

According to the management at Pompeii ruins, during the peak months, one may end up waiting in the ticket counter lines for a minimum of 30 minutes to an hour (pic above).

The only way to avoid the long lines at the ticketing counters of Pompeii is by buying Pompeii tickets online , in advance.

Inside the ruins

Pompeii is crowded from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm and it is best to avoid star attractions of Pompeii ruins during this period.

Use the Pompeii map , and avoid the crowd-pullers.

Tourists visiting as part of group tours get back to their coaches by 12.30 pm to 1 pm.

Once they all leave, you can get back to exploring the must-sees in Pompeii.

Visiting the Ruins of Pompeii

The archaeological ruins of Pompeii cover around 440,000 square meters, a vast area that would take at least three full days to explore completely. Remember that Pompeii is an entire buried city with squares, temples, baths, public buildings, private villas, and shops...just a visit to the city's forum takes about an hour.

That said, you can easily follow a shorter itinerary that includes some of the buried city's most famous sites , giving you an idea of what daily life was like in this Roman city. Here we suggest a few sites that you should include during your visit to the ruins, marking them with the same names as included on the free map provided at the ticket office and info point at the entrance to the ruins.

A Brief History of Pompeii

Pompeii was probably founded by the Oscans around the 8th century BC. This ancient Italic people settled on the southern slopes of Mount Vesuvius along the banks of the Sarno River, which was navigable at the time. Pompeii became an important commercial center early on, catching the interest of the invading Greeks and Etruscans. The Etruscans were conquered on the waters off Cuma, and the city came under domination by the Samnites in the 5th century BC. As a Samnite city, Pompeii entered into the Nucerine League and the tufo stone city walls were both expanded and fortified, allowing the city itself to grow. Pompeii became known as an important exporter of olive oil and wine, benefiting from the Mediterranean free market under Roman protection. After the end of the Samnite Wars in 80 BC, the city came under Roman dominance and in 89 BC Publius Cornelius Silla took up residency there along with a group of veterans, renaming the city Colonia Venerea Pompeianorum Sillana. During its Roman period, the city reached its architectural and economic peak, transforming into one of the most popular recreational and resort towns of the Roman aristocracy . During the Imperial Age, many wealthy Roman families moved to Pompeii, and buildings like the Temple of Fortuna Augusta and the Building of Eumachia are testimony to this influx. Under the Emperor Nero, the city was seriously damaged due to a strong earthquake in 62 AD, and rebuilding immediately began. Work was interrupted on 24 August of 79 AD by the disastrous eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

A cloud, from which mountain was uncertain, at this distance (but it was found afterwards to come from Mount Vesuvius), was ascending, the appearance of which I cannot give you a more exact description of than by likening it to that of a pine tree, for it shot up to a great height in the form of a very tall trunk, which spread itself out at the top into a sort of branches; occasioned, I imagine, either by a sudden gust of air that impelled it, the force of which decreased as it advanced upwards, or the cloud itself being pressed back again by its own weight, expanded in the manner I have mentioned; it appeared sometimes bright and sometimes dark and spotted, according as it was either more or less impregnated with earth and cinders." (Pliny the Younger)

Excavation of Pompeii began in 1748 under King of Naples Charles III of Bourbon , who was interested in the project's prestige for the royal house and did not undertake the dig with particular scientific or systematic vigor. During the French occupation at the beginning of the 19th century, work at the excavation increased, though was halted almost completely with the return of the Bourbon kings. During this period, the discovery of the House of the Faun , with its excellent mosaic depicting the Battle of Alexander at Issus created such a stir that archaeological work began again at the site, this time using scientific methodology, careful record keeping, and plaster casting. From 1924 to 1961, work was overseen by Italian archaeologist Amedeo Maiuri and included important discoveries. Over recent years, excavations of new areas in the site have been halted and work is concentrated on restoring and maintaining buildings already unearthed.

Visiting Pompeii ruins with Kids

It isn't easy to get around Pompeii ruins with a stroller or pushchair, as the ancient Roman roads that cross the city are not navigable on wheels. Wheelchair users can follow a special marked route with the free map provided at the entrance, and the same itinerary can be followed with a stroller. Regardless, the best way to visit with infants and young children is by using a carrier or backpack. There are a number of Baby Points inside the archaeological park, which are small bungalows marked on the map. You can request keys at the park entrance and use these spaces to change and feed your infant in complete privacy.

Where to Eat

If you have decided to dedicate a full day to Pompeii ruins, the best option for lunch is packing a picnic to eat inside the park . On the park map available at the entrance, you will find a number of picnic areas marked around the ruins. Large bags are not allowed inside, so you will have to pack your food and beverages in small bags or backpacks. Purchase your supplies in Naples or Sorrento, as the snack bars inside the park are expensive. In Sorrento , the Salumeria Aprea (located on Via Tasso in the historic center and at the beginning of Via del Mare) makes excellent Caprese sandwiches and often has “casatiello”, a soft savory bread baked with diced ham, traditionally made at Easter. In Naples , pick up a sandwich at a cafè or take-away near the Stazione Centrale, or stop in Eccellenze della Costiera to choose some traditional sweet treats from the Amalfi Coast .

1. large theater and odeon (viii - 10).

Pompeii's two theaters are located in the same area of the ancient city. The Teatro Grande (Large Theater) is an open-air amphitheater where Greek-Roman plays were performed; the smaller Odeon was used for poetry and musical performances, which required a smaller and covered space for the best acoustics. Tip: stand at the middle of the Odeon's stage and speak in a normal voice. You will hear your own voice amplified as if you have spoken into a microphone.

2. Garden of the Fugitives (I- 16)

The Orto dei Fuggiaschi (Garden of the Fugitives) was an old quarter of the city that has been converted to vineyards as Pompeii grew. The name is an homage to the bodies of 13 victims of the eruption in 79 AD who were trying to escape through Porta Nocera before succumbing to the ashes and stone. Their remains where discovered during excavations in 1961-62 and 1973-74, using plaster casting methods.

3. Amphitheater (II – 5)

Built around 70 BC, Pompeii's ancient amphitheater is one of the best preserved in the world. Used for sporting events and gladiator battles, the space could seat 20,000 spectators in three sections of seating: the first rows were for prominent citizens, the middle rows were for the middle classes, and the summa, or the highest rows, were for the rest of the population.

4. Praedia of Giulia Felice (II – 3)

The Praedia di Giulia Felice is a large complex dating from the 1st century BC and was one of the first homes unearthed during excavations. This patrician villa has a large gardens surrounding a series of residential buildings and thermal baths. The name Giulia Felice was taken from an inscription painted on the facade after the earthquake of 62 AD (today displayed in Naples' National Archaeological Museum) in which the owner advertises that part of the property is for rent. The lavish decorations in the residential and thermal areas are particularly beautiful.

5. Lupanar (VII - 18)

The lupanare (lupanar) is one of the most memorable sites within the ruins of Pompeii. The city's brothel was on two levels, with five small cells on the ground floor and five upstairs. Each cell had a stone bed that was topped with a mat or cushion, and above the door of each cell was an erotic fresco that probably depicted the specialization of the prostitute that worked in each individual cell. Though the brothel is located between two side streets, it was and still is easy to find by following the phallic symbols on the flagstones and facades of nearby buildings.

6. House of the Faun (VI – 1)

The Casa del Fauno (House of the Faun) is one of the most spectacular and largest houses in Pompeii, covering around 3,000 square meters with areas dedicated to the villa's owners and other areas for the servants. The name comes from a bronze satyr statue in the impluvium (a small pool for gathering rain water), and the villa has a number of statues, frescoes, and mosaics. Among the most famous is the mosaic that depicts Alexander the Great battling Darius and the Persians at Issus, now displayed at the National Archaeological Museum in Naples.

7. Villa of the Mysteries (VI – 19)

Discovered between 1909 and 1910, the Villa dei Misteri (Villa of the Mysteries) is one of the most captivating and mysterious in the entire ruins, and probably belonged to the Istacidii family, one of the most powerful in Pompeii during the reign of Augustus. The building dates from the first century BC and was built in the western residential area outside the city walls overlooking the sea. It had been renovated a number of times before the eruption in 79 AD, and is named for the Hall of Mysteries, a triclinium (dining hall) decorated with an extraordinary and enigmatic cycle of paintings,17 meters by 3 meters. The scene seems to depict a Dionysian ritual and the initiation into the cult, with the gods Dionysus and Aphrodite (or Ariadne) in the center of the rear wall.

8. Forum (VII – 6a)

Pompeii's Foro (Forum) is one of the most striking spots in the ancient city: a large square with triumphal arches, public buildings, the basilica, the market, the mensa ponderaria (weights and measures), and temples and buildings dedicated to Apollo, to Jupiter (the head of the former statue, dating from around 80 BC, still sits here), to Vespasian, to the Public Lares, and the Eumachia building. The city's main civic, religious, and commercial activities were carried out in the forum, and, as in all Imperial cities, the space was pedestrian only and closed to wheeled vehicles.

9. Basilica (VIII – 2)

Don't be fooled by the name: in Roman times, a basilica was the most important public building in the city, used as a type of courtroom where the judge sat on a raised dais above the sides and was also where commercial contracts were drawn up. The space, dating from the second century BC, resembled a covered forum with columns and could be used for the same civic, religious, and commercial functions in case of inclement weather.

10. Sanctuary of Venus (VIII – 1)

This important sacred site dedicated to Venus, protectress of the city and of navigation, was established in the second half of the second century BC on the plain of Pompeii facing the Sarno Valley and the sea. In the first half of the first century AD, the building reached its height of splendor with a series of expansions, renovations, and marble decorations. The temple housed a large gold lamp, probably donated by Nero and his wife, Poppea, to the cult, now displayed in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples .

Derived from Latin word “Lupa”, which means “prostitute” in English, the Lupanar is located to the east of the Forum of Pompeii and used to be the most famous brothel in the city during its hay days. The prostitutes comprised Greek and Oriental slaves who were paid some money for their services.

Its also the free day so potentially very crowded, Although I am looking forward to it , I think 7 hours might be a bit much. Is my ticket still valid if I decide to go back earlier - either from going from pompei fs and changing at naples, or taking the private train , having a few hours in Naples and then taking the train from there that I would have been on had i stayed the full day

My ticket is super economy base and implies that it can be changed. Do I need to go to the desk and change it - or can I just use it on any train ?

How busy is the free day likely to be, I have a few days free, so am wondering if cancelling this ticket and going on another day is maybe more sensible

You cannot just use the ticket on another train, it is seat-assigned. You'd need to change the ticket at the station and pay whatever fee is associated with the change.

If the weather is nice it will be very crowded on the free Sundays throughout the summer.

Trenitalia Super Economy tickets are NON-CHANGEABLE and NON-REFUNDABLE.

If you did not purchase the PARTIAL REFUND OPTION, you're out of luck.

P.S.: there is no such thing as a "super economy base" ticket. It is either a "Base" fare ticket or a "Super Economy" ticket, or perhaps some other fare category.

I brought through the train line website and it definitely says super economy base, but clicking though its super economy for the rome to Pompei and base for the bus journey from pompei to the park,So it's a bit confusing, but I understand now

Train line is a reseller, they can make up any terms they want.

If you are holding a ticket on a specific train with an assigned seat in your name, you should be able to board it (whether you use the bus ticket that goes with it or not). You could go to the service counter at the station to confirm that.

If so, this train does stop at Napoli Centrale so you would also be able to board there and take your assigned seat.

Thanks, I expect a lot of tourists on the train down so hopefully I can ask there, at worst I'll end up paying for one of the slower cheaper trains back. Do the stations have automated gates for entry to platforms

Yes that's the one. 7 hours in pompei sounds like a long time so I probably won't be the first to leave a bit early
